From The Publisher There is a lot going through my mind as I sit down to write this letter. We are just starting our third year of the Cedar City Magazine and we love it! It has had its ups and downs, just like starting any small business, but Kaylene and I truly appreciate your acceptance of the magazine and hope you will continue to support us and our advertising partners as you have in the past.

We were so amazed that it actually grew. I have to admit that it is just as fun to watch my basil, peppers, cucumbers and more begin to grow. I would recommend everyone give it a try.

High School Basketball…WOW, WOW and WOW! It was a great year for our local schools! With SUU hosting the 3A tournament the crowds were terrific and the “Southern Utah” pride was everywhere. It was great to see students and fans alike from opposing schools, band together and support the local teams in their games against teams from out of the area.

Ready for an early season hike? Did you know that the national park system is celebrating its 100th birthday this year? Now is the perfect time to visit Zion National Park. Take your friends, roommates or family go enjoy an easy afternoon hike. There are a number of “easy, family friendly” hikes, and the best thing about a spring hike is that you can beat both the summer heat and crowds. While you are at it, now is a great time to plan a summer trip to some of our state’s great national or state parks. For more information, you can go to www.parks100.com and see up-close all that Southern Utah has to offer.

Cedar High’s Lady Reds had an incredible season finishing with a 20-6 record, and won of 11 of their last 12 games. They showed their grit and determination in the tournament by defeating Juan Diego and Carbon (both #1 seeds from their respective regions) on their way to the championship game with Snow Canyon. The game lived up to all the hype, and was not decided until the final minute. Unfortunately, the Lady Red’s came up just a little short and had to settle for 2nd place, but what a great accomplishment!

With the move to Region 12 this year, the Canyon View boys team proved to everyone in the state just how good they really were. After winning the region championship with a 7-1 record, they came into the state tournament with a 10 game winning streak. With wins over Morgan and Pine View before eventually falling to Region 11’s # 1 seed, Juan Diego in the semi-finals, it was a great year for the Falcons!

Now is the time to starting planning your garden and getting everything ready.

Master Gardener, Chrystal Deshowitz shows us how to grow our own herb garden in this issue. I took her advice and decided to try and see if I had even a part of a green thumb, so I bought a couple of shop lights and started a few vegetables and herbs from my own from seeds. My wife even

Thunder Sounds in Big Sky with Conference Crown

He’d never seen his SUU football team play like this—winning seven consecutive games and topping the Big Sky Conference standings—yet Head Coach Ed Lamb has weathered enough highs and lows in his eight seasons at SUU to provide constructive guidance after a heartbreaking one-point loss to Portland State on November 14.

Knowing a win was essential against Northern Arizona at home the next week, he and his Thunderbirds went to work, and the team that marched onto the field in the final and, arguably, most important game of the season on November 21 was one of determination.

The see-saw battle went down to the final minutes, as quarterback Ammon Olsen threw a 27-yard scoring strike to Ty Rut¬ledge and running back Jarom Healey scampered for a 70-yard touchdown to seal a 49-41 T-Bird win. SUU scored five second-half touchdowns.

Lamb, who turned around SUU’s football fortunes when he arrived in Cedar City in 2008, further expressed that gratitude when his success took him from SUU in December as he accepted the assistant head coach position with new BYU coach Kalani Sitake, a former Cougar teammate.

Prior to that, though, Lamb led his 8-3 T-Birds for the second time in the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs against Sam Houston State. The squad met the same opponent in the same venue, in Huntsville, Texas, as they had in their first playoff experience in 2013.

The T-Birds led for most of the game, but the Bearkats gained the advantage and the 42-39 victory. Despite the loss, the Big Sky Cham¬pions earned the program’s highest rankings ever in both the FCS Coaches Poll and

STATS FCS Poll.

Individual players also scored, with James Cowser (defensive end), Miles Killebrew (strong safety) and Leshaun Sims (cornerback) projected to be drafted by NFL teams between the fourth and seventh rounds, with Cowser rated in the fourth round and 125th overall.

Cowser rewrote the FCS football record book while at SUU, setting a new all-time mark with 43.5 career sacks.

The Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year, along with Sims, accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine Game, while Olsen and Killebrew were also selected to post-season bowl teams.

T-Birds Race to 21st Finish At NCAA Championships Hawks Named All-American Men’s Cross-Country team after winning the Big Sky Championships

In the men’s cross country season finale at the NCAA National Championships, the Thunderbirds finished 21st as a team, and senior Hayden Hawks earned All-America status by finishing 35th individually.

Hawks’ finish was the result of finishing the 10K in 30:22.8, which was the fastest time for the Thunderbirds.

Hawks had told SUU head coach Eric Houle when he was redshirting that he would be an All-American, and he accomplished that goal, which is something Houle is very proud of.

“He put his mind to it and did the work we needed him to do and he’s awarded now with one of the All-American spots,” he said. “That’s something he and the rest of the team will remember for a long time to come.”

The 21st-place finish is one spot higher than the T-Birds finished last season, but Houle said the space between several teams above them was very slim.

“About 71 points separated us from 12th,” he said. “We had a couple of guys run off pace, and everybody else had a drastic improvement over last year and in a race like this 71 points is not a big deal, so we ran really good. We just had a couple guys run off pace, but it was a huge improvement for us over last year.”

Houle said this time around there was a little more recognition for the team, as runners continue to improve over the upcoming years that will as well.

SUU students ride in new indoor arena as part of equestrian class

No Matter the Weather, Ride Together Southern Utah University, it is said, has closer ties with the horse than any institution in the nation.

SUU offers an applied associate degree in Equine Studies, and since the degree’s approval by the Utah Board of Regents in 2008, demand for the program has grown each year. To accommodate the program’s expansion, the University in 2010 began a fund-raising campaign to build an indoor equestrian teaching facility.

With contributions from the Cedar City community and other donors, the Kenneth L. Cannon Equestrian Center was built, opening its doors officially on March 19, 2015, during the SUU Founders’ Celebration. SUU is grateful to the many generous donors to this facility, including: Connie C. Holbrook, Garth & Jerri Frehner, SUU Valley Farm, Energy Solutions, Shannon Family Foundation, and Edward & Shirley Stokes.

“The SUU Equestrian program has continued to grow and flourish,” said associate professor of agriculture Lee Wood. “In fact, all of our classes are full nearly every semester and there is great demand for instruction.”

Wood said he thinks that working with horses gives students a more well-rounded perspective and has helped him be a better father and person. “We have to adjust to the horse; the same applies to our human relationships,” Wood said.

For many prior years, students

and faculty held classes on horsemanship outdoors in inclement weather. The new indoor arena now provides protection and comfort for the students, faculty, and staff.

The new 22,900-square-foot arena holds horsemanship classes for beginners as well as advanced students, in addition to courses in horse production, and the facility hosts a variety of Future Farmers of America events sponsored by the SUU Agriculture Program. The Kenneth L. Cannon Equestrian Center has contributed to many students’ success in Equine Studies at SUU and the new center continues to promote the growth of the program.

Southern Utah University is thankful for Cedar City’s dedication to education. With the help of the community and donors the new center was possible to build and expanded the educational needs of the 600+ students in the program.

Mayoral Roots Begin in SUU’s Classroom Mayors Geoff Chesnut, Enoch Mayor, joins Cedar City Mayor Mailee Wilson with an SUU degree

A pair of 21st century Southern Utah University graduates guide Iron County’s two largest cities, as new Enoch Mayor Geoff Chesnut has joined fellow Thunderbird alum and Cedar City Mayor Maile Wilson as vibrant and forward-thinking leaders well prepared for their respective mantles.

Geoff, who took office last month, graduated from SUU in 2003 with a degree in political science with a strong minor in criminal justice, went on to earn a law degree from Arizona State University, and is a partner in Red Rock Legal Services.

He has a vision of uniting the more than 6,000 residents of the valley community that, he says, has become “fractured.” The 39-year-old father of three says that through a number of civic projects designed to bring people together, that his children and all young families in town can become a more embraced and integral part of the historic town.

The eloquent mayor and his wife Dezaree, who earned a teaching certificate at SUU and is close to

fulfilling requirements for a master’s degree in education, are parents to five-year-old Phoebee and identical twin boys, one-year-olds Greer and Chandler.

A Salt Lake City native and transfer to SUU for his sophomore year, Geoff found the University to be a fulfilling experience, serving on the SUUSA judicial council for three years, and as student director of what is now the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service.

Maile, too, points to her SUU training as a key element in her success both as mayor and as an attorney with the law firm of Jones Waldo in Cedar City and St. George.

She graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, followed by a master’s in public administration, then went on to receive her law degree from Charlotte School of Law, in Charlotte, N.C. The Cedar City native took office in January 2014 as the first female and youngest mayor in the history of the city. Maile gained valuable experience as a member of the University mock

trial team and, as an SUU intern for the Washington City manager, gained insight into public administration. She credits SUU’s program of augmenting in-class instruction with real-world application as giving her a strong foundation.

She followed solid examples of her grandfather Loren Whetten who held the mayoral position from 1966 to 1974, and of her parents, Rich and Linda Wilson, who have long been stalwart civic contributors.

Halfway through her elected term, Maile, 29, led the process to develop Cedar City’s first-ever strategic plan and looks forward to its implementation in the coming months.

“It’s vital that we prepare for our future growth with a strong and wise plan,” she says.

SUU Professor to National Recognition

For both his remarkable musicianship and activities as a promoter of international cultural exchange with his native China, SUU Associate Professor of Music Dr. Xun Sun has been named by MusicalAmerica.com as one of the top professionals of the year. This year the publication focused on “The Influencers” and selected 30 unique individuals for the honor from across the nation.

According to Susan Elliott, editor of MusicalAmerica. com and News and Special Reports, “The Influencers, defined as a people who are making a difference in our business, either by virtue of their positions, their creativity, and/or their dedication.”

Dr. Sun was singled out for this year’s honor for utilizing his contacts on two continents to form cultural partnerships for members of the semi-professional Orchestra of Southern Utah (OSU) and students from Southern Utah University’s Department of Music. In 2011, he took 11 members of the orchestra on a tour of China introducing audiences to works that have been commissioned by OSU. His association with the Hubei Opera and Dance Drama Theatre enabled SUU music and dance students to perform in an original collaborative work, The Dream of Helen, celebrating the legacy of Cedar City native Helen Foster Snow for her humanitarian efforts in China during the 1930s.

Arts and co-director/choreographer of The Dream of Helen, said “Dr. Sun has been the catalyst in advancing SUU’s and Cedar City’s partnership with China. In ways unpredictable and often surprising, his efforts have created educational and cultural opportunities for SUU and members of the Orchestra of Southern Utah with transformational results.”

Dr. Xun Sun serves as Director of Orchestral Activities at Southern Utah University, conducts SUU’s Symphony Orchestra and String Ensemble and teaches Advanced Instrumental Conducting and Applied Instruction of Violin at the music department. Dr. Sun also serves as the Music Director/Conductor of the Orchestra of Southern Utah (OSU).

Born in the city of Taiyuan, China, Dr. Xun Sun began his formal music training and violin studies at Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China at age 11 through the government’s scholarship program for exceptional music students. This substantial music training led him to successful graduate studies in the United States. Under the Evelyn Ryan Nelson Concertmaster Fellowship at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Conservatory of Music, he earned master’s degrees in Instrumental Conducting and Violin Performance. He holds a doctorate degree in Education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, New York.

As high school seniors enter their final semester of high school, the time to apply for college rapidly approaches. To help with that heavy decision, Wednesday, December 2, Southern Utah University President Scott L Wyatt joined more than 200 high school seniors at Cedar High School to talk about the advantages of attending college.

Sharing research that explains the benefits of earning a college degree, Wyatt stressed that the decisions students make now determine the life they will lead. “There are a million reasons why you should go to college, but bottom line; You’ll earn more money, live longer, and be a happier, healthier person,” said Wyatt.

According to national studies, people who graduate from college make more money than those with just a high school diploma. On aver-

age, the lifetime income for people with an undergraduate degree is $2.78 million, over a million dollars more than someone with a high school education. Earning a bachelor’s degree is an investment that results in more opportunities and a greater variety in jobs and careers.

Wyatt also explained that a post-secondary experience equips students to navigate their way in life.

He went on to say that more confidence, discipline, communication skills and motivation, which all lead to positivity, less stress and greater self-fulfillment.

“Choosing a college is a big decision and SUU admission counselors are available to help you through the process,” said Jay Sorensen, SUU graduate recruitment coordinator.

“We really want you at SUU. You can still apply and get scholarships.”

Cedar City’s connection to the national parks goes back to the beginning, as the gateway to the Bryce and Zion National Parks and Cedar Breaks National Monument.

On August 25, 2016 the National Park Service turns 100 and beginning in January 2016 the NPS is celebrating national parks by inviting visitors to Find Your Park.™ Cedar City, as a part of the larger PARKS100, is taking that a few steps further.

With the combined effort of over 25 parks and organizations in the Grand Circle area of Arizona, Nevada and Utah, Parks100 is celebrating the National Park Service’s centennial in a new way. What’s So Great About The Great Outdoors?

When it comes to outdoor recreation, Utah is among the top in the nation. You can engage in almost any type of outdoor activity possible, from mountain biking and canyoneering, to bird watching and geo caching. With multiple national forests, monuments, and parks within only a couple of hours drive, we have limited excuses not to get outside throughout the year. The variety of outdoor space and activities means ample recreation opportunities for novices, experts, and everyone in between.

Unfortunately, actually taking the time to get outside is often an exception rather than the norm. Research suggests many of us, especially adolescents and children, are spending less time outside than previous generations. The reasons for this decline are multifaceted and include things like the draw of digital media in its many forms, lack of knowledge of where to go and what to do, living over-scheduled lives, fear of strangers, and even the comfort of airconditioning.

While it may be easier to plop down on the couch and stream the latest episode of whatever we are currently binge watching than it is to drive to a local canyon for a quick hike, or even spend a couple of minutes walking through a local park, the benefits of spending even a small amount of time outside far outweigh the momentary satisfaction of watching even the funniest YouTube #fail videos.

A diverse array of research studies over the last 20 years paint a convincing picture of the benefits gained from getting outside.

Our time is a precious commodity. If we’re not careful, we can end up spending it in ways that, like junk food, provide momentary satisfaction but in the long-term leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled. Luckily, as Utahans, we have many awesome outdoor activities to engage in and amazing places to visit. Take advantage of these great opportunities that surround us in this beautiful place we call home!

Zion’s best short and easy hikes

1. Northgate Peaks | 4.4 miles round-trip | 2 hours This is an easy and scenic trail for sure, but it’s in a remote location of the park (Kolob Canyon). You’ll trek through Navajo sandstone, sage meadows, and pretty pines. And there’s more: lava outcrops and knock-you-socks-off views of Northgate Peaks as well as the North Guardian Angel.

TRAILHEAD: Wildcat Canyon trailhead, located at mile 16 up Kolob Reservoir Road 2. The Watchman | 2 miles round-trip | 1 hour This 3-foot wide trail winds through the foothills with views of Bridge Mountain, The Watchman, the Virgin River and the Towers of the Virgin. Switchbacks reveal views of stratified rock layers and overhanging cliffs.

TRAILHEAD: Park at the Watchman Campground visitor center and simply walk to the trailhead from there.

3. West Bank of the Virgin River | 2.6 miles one way | 1 - 1.5 hours Walk Zion Canyon—the park’s aorta. The trail is wellused and level and straight-up gorgeous. Start at the Court of the Patriarchs up Zion Canyon Road, and end at the Grotto trailhead. This trail also accesses the trailhead for the Emerald Pools trail.

TRAILHEAD: at the Court of the Patriarchs viewpoint up Zion Canyon (take the shuttle between April and October).

4. Lower Emerald Pool | 1.2 Miles Round-trip | 0.5 Hours Easiest of easy. This little hike is paved and wide. You’ll have no problems navigating or getting to your final destination. Zion is probably the most generous of national parks—alway handing out life-changing views to every single visitor.

The Lower Pool trail is stroller/wheelchair friendly, and you could even tote a wagon with a picnic lunch.

Gardening: A Bit Beyond the Basics

By Dianne Farrer, Ph.D. There are more than enough people around the valley willing to offer you advice or classes on gardening.

But what if you knew the science behind all the garden advice/classes, so you could figure out the facts from the fiction, and have the best garden on the block? Well, I don’t have enough space here to give you all the scientific information you would need, but let me share some great points that will get you a step ahead of the rest. We are going to go a bit beyond the basics of gardening.

Here is the “Thick List” of things to know: 1. HAVE A PLAN. This piece of advice really counts for a vegetable garden, but also works for flower gardens. Draw out where you will put what, and keep that plan so next year you have an idea of what was where. Also, take notes. What grew well, what did not, when you watered, disease and insect pressures, was it too sunny or too shady, how was your harvest, etc. The more time you spend on your notes and in your garden, the better you will become at gardening. You will learn from what you have done, and what you should have done.

Rural Life 2. REASONABLE GARDEN SIZE. A study showed that the gardening activity that consumed the most time was harvesting. This study showed that a garden size of about 10 x 10 ft was the ideal size for an average family.

3. SOIL ORGANIC MATTER. The key to a good garden is organic matter as a part of the soil. The soils of this particular area are “immature” geologically speaking, and though they do have many nutrients in them, they don’t have much organic matter. A few good ways to add organic matter to your flowerbeds or vegetable garden area are: manures, mulches, or even grass clippings (though your lawn would benefit from those as well). Just make sure the organic matter is worked/tilled into the soil very well and evenly.

4. WATER WHEN NEEDED. Don’t just rely on a timer or predetermined schedule. Water conservation is the latest buzzword, and to be water-wise is king. You will need less water on your garden in the spring and fall because of cooler temperatures, but summer is when we either over or under water our gardens. There are “indicator plants” that can tell you when to water. When they start to look wilted/dry, the other plants in the garden need water as well. Tomato plants are a good indicator plant. Water early in the morning, and use flood irrigation or drip irrigation instead of sprinklers. Plants will spend all of their energy getting dry if you use sprinklers. Once dry, they direct their energy on production (making yummy tomatoes or melons).

And now, the “Thin List” of things to know: 1. Don’t plant corn or potatoes in your garden, unless you really want to as they are cheaper and easier to pick up at the store than to produce in your garden.

2. Make sure your garden is not in the sun only in the early morning or late afternoon. It’s ideal to get midmorning to mid-afternoon sun; too much shade equals no production.

3. Fertilize in the spring with nitrogen and potassium based fertilizers and forget adding phosphorus to the garden, as there is plenty of native phosphorus in the soil.

By Chef Greg Reith For the previous five Southern Utah winters, my family and I have been participating in a food preservation regimen the National Guard would be proud of. It’s as simple as this: we select our favorite summer and autumn fruits and vegetables that we have researched and learned do well in the freezer, and carefully and manually prepare our crops for portion controlled, freezer-safe bags, bottles, boxes and bins.

Here are a few “secrets” we have learned that can help you: Labeling. Clear and accurate labeling is very important! Knowing what, when, how and why are all vital when storing and preserving food.

Blanching. This makes a profound difference, in storing fruits especially. Salted boiling water can be cross utilized as well. For example, we blanch whole apples for 2-3 minutes, then remove them to rest before slicing About the Author Greg Reith is an Executive and freezing. I recommend the following freezer friendly crops: asparagus, berries, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, chard, Vocational Education. collards, corn, eggplant, green beans, herbs, kale, kohlrabi, okra, peas, peppers, rhubarb, spinach, squash and tomatoes. (For the record, the tomato is my choice for the greatest freezer preserver thanks to the seemingly endless options for sauces, dressing, soup, etc.)

Remember, you will be pulling a delicious and nutritious finished product right out of your freezer! Tomato sauce, creamy tomato basil, and caramelized shallot soup are a few favorites of mine that are waiting for me at home.

According to the National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP, NCHFP.UGA.edu), fruits and vegetables will last from 8-12 months in your freezer. You know what that means… Year-round pies for everyone!

Daily Feeding Chickens: Fill the feeder as needed; generally, just a few times per week.

Dogs: Feed every day, two times each day. Supplement with table scraps when begging occurs.

Winner: Chickens Daily Upkeep Chickens: Let them out of the coop in the morning. Close the coop at night.

Dogs: Put on your coat and go out in the pouring rain or snow to walk your dog. Do this two or three times each day for a minimum of 20 minutes each time. When you get home, use a towel to wipe off your dog’s feet or suffer with muddy paw prints on your floors. In urban and suburban locations, you need to clean up after your pooch, so talk along your pooper scooper and dog bags. Having fun yet?

Winner: Chickens Household Inconveniences Chickens: None. They live in a coop outside, so you have your home to yourself. Clean the coop once per week -- takes about 20 minutes.

Dogs: Dogs generally live with you, so dog hair gathers on your floors and your furniture as well, because dogs sleep on the couch whenever they can get away with it. And of course, there are those little accidents on the floor now and again which you’ll need to clean up. Get out those paper towels.

Dogs: Definitely cute and cuddly. And then there are those sad brown eyes looking at you.

• Grill 3 minutes, turn a 1/4 turn to make grill marks.

Instructions: Preheat oven to 425° F. • In a small bowl combine coconut oil, mustard, pepper, sage and sea salt.

Here comes the sun, and I say it’s all right. ~ Beatles The Beatles said it best, but I echo their sentiment in saying, “bring on the spring!” Those of us who live in Dixie know that spring brings many things.

Sports and outdoor recreation, festivals and fun events, and of course everyone’s favorite… the traditional “spring cleaning” that happens in almost every home. Even in my own house, it’s time to clean cabinets and fridges. Out with the old, and in with the new!

Spring is also the perfect time to clean up your diet. A great start is to remove processed foods. You know, those packaged items that have ingredient lists you can’t even pronounce. Throw them out! If they’re not in your cabinets, you can’t eat them. As a general rule, it’s a good idea to avoid eating things that you can’t pronounce. Unless it quinoa. Quinoa is on our good list.

Second step, with the weather getting hotter we need to increase our water intake. The average person should be drinking half their body weight in ounces of water. With increased physical exercise, you should up the amounts even more.

Next? Throw out those artificial sweeteners!

As bad as sugar is for the body, artificial sweeteners are even worse. More and more health problems are linked to artificial sweeteners.

With daylight savings time changing, the days stay lighter longer. This often leads to eating later into the evening.

Focus on not eating much after 7pm. It also makes sense for dinner to be the lightest meal of the day. Start with a big, healthy breakfast.

Most people have a tendency to skip breakfast, but most of these people who skip breakfast are not slim. Your metabolism doesn’t really kick in until you feed it. Your body is like a vehicle; it needs fuel! Feed your body like you feed your car. (Not literally… refined petroleum does little to improve one’s health.) Lunch should be your second biggest meal, and dinner should be your smallest, lowest carbohydrate meal of the day. You really don’t need to fuel your machine just to go to sleep.

Smoothies are a great drink during the spring and summer seasons, especially as a dinner replacer. If you are making them yourself, watch the calories that you are putting in them. Read the

Santa Clara Swiss flower wrapped eggs are one of the local charms I look forward to every year.When I arrived in Santa Clara in the spring of 1990, I was soon introduced to the concept of wrapping flowers around eggs and cooking them in yellow onion skins and red roots to imprint the flowers directly onto the eggs. Genius! My new Santa Clara native stepmother, Mary, walked us all through each step, from picking the flowers to digging the local red roots from the Santa Clara river to wrapping and cooking. Gather some spring flowers and try it for yourself!

STEP 1 Gather flowers & grasses, as well as plenty of yellow onion skins or red roots for boiling eggs.

STEP 2 Dip egg in water and place flowers & leaves face down on egg. Secure with plenty of sewing thread.

STEP 3 Place wrapped eggs in a large pot of cool onion skins or red roots. Heat to a boil & cook for 20 - 30 minutes.

Cool.

STEP 4 Remove eggs; carefully unwrap while still warm. Use an old cloth to polish unwrapped eggs with butter.

Emergency Room or InstaCare:

Where should you go when medical needs arise?

You just sat down to watch your favorite, Saturday-afternoon television show when you hear the six-foot ladder and accompanying spouse go crashing to the floor in the other room. As you rush to help, you wonder whether this mishap will require treatment at the hospital emergency room (ER) or a visit to Intermountain InstaCare.

Selecting the right setting for care not only influences medical outcomes, but can also impact time and money. For many of us, knowing whether to select the ER or the InstaCare can be a mystery, but a few, basic guidelines can help make that decision easier.

When should you visit the emergency room? Robert Neubauer, MD, a family medicine physician at InstaCare who also has ER experience, says the first clue that signals the emergency room is appropriate is in the name: “If it’s an emergency, go to the ER.” More specifically, Dr. Neubauer says the ER is appropriate if someone is unconscious, bleeding excessively, not breathing or experiencing seizures — the type of thing that would warrant a 911 call and an ambulance trip to the hospital. Other symptoms that merit an ER visit include chest pain and severe shortness of breath.

Appropriate ER treatment is especially important for patients with heart attack or stroke symptoms. Crucial, time-sensitive treatments can help minimize the negative, long-term impact of heart attack and stroke. However that treatment is administered at the emergency room, not the InstaCare.

“These conditions require that certain procedures are done within minutes,” said Dr. Neubauer. “People may not fully understand the risks involved or the significance of the problem. Coming to the InstaCare first and then being sent to the ER can waste a lot of valuable time. It’s better to go directly to the ER.” Dr. Neubauer recommends another way to distinguish whether a symptom or condition needs emergency room treatment: “If you think it’s going to require eminent surgery, you should go to the ER. For example, if someone’s belly pain may be appendicitis, they should go to the ER.” When it comes to broken bones, Dr. Neubauer says that exposed bones or deformed limbs should be treated at the ER. “Something 32 www.cedarcitymag.com

that’s going to require an orthopedic specialist falls into the realm of the ER.” When InstaCare is the right alternative. Going to the ER for emergency symptoms or conditions is the right choice. At the same time, ER visits for minor issues (such as cuts that need a few stiches or lowgrade fevers) could end up costing more and taking more time than a visit to an urgent care facility like InstaCare.

Dr. Neubauer suggests InstaCare is the perfect choice for urgent, non-life threatening conditions that could be treated in a doctor’s office — sore throats, minor accidents, broken bones, ear infections, etc. As suggested, if a broken bone is exposed or a limb is deformed, that should go to the ER. If you’re not sure whether you’re dealing with a broken bone or just a bad sprain, InstaCare is the appropriate option.

InstaCare visits are often shorter than an ER trip, plus InstaCare clinics now offer a call-ahead option that lets patients save a place in line before they get to the clinic. That quick call from home can help to reduce the wait time once a patient gets to the clinic.

Both the emergency room and InstaCare clinics have advantages that can help when unexpected medical needs arise. Selecting the right setting for your care will help ensure you get the best treatment for your condition in a timely, cost-effective way.

The Revolutionary Shift Cognitive Wellness through Brain Stimulation

By Kelli Charlton The way we think about our brains is going through a revolutionary shift. As humans live longer, the awareness that changes the way we take care of ourselves is gaining momentum. It has been years in the making, but the dawn of a new day, and a new way of thinking, is absolutely upon us.

As we work to improve cognitive wellness, we must ask ourselves what we hope to gain as we do this. Do we want to simply live longer, or do we actually want to live the fullest, richest lives possible until our last breath? I believe it is the latter.

In my training practice, I see individuals ranging in age from 55 to 95 and they tell me their deepest secrets. Individually, they each think they are alone, but collectively, when we meet in groups of six, eight, ten or more during my lectures, I will ask a question and 90% of the hands go up in congruence. They are forgetting more and they don’t remember as well as they once did. They don’t see so well. They can’t hear. Some tell me that they can no longer smell or taste things as they once could. Their bodies creak, and they groan when rising from the chair. On the other hand, they crack jokes and make me laugh with their great senses of humor and wonderful insight into the world. The wisdom they impart gives me hope for my own future. More than anything, they want to regain what they have lost, and retain what is still there.

There are dozens of peer reviewed scientific papers showing the value of “brain training.” In fact, there are five specific criteria used by the Institute of Medicine when determining the efficacy of a brain training program.

This type of IMPACT study is critical in understanding the value of transfer; how we take the brain stimulation from technology and transfer it to real-life experience.

An example of this is an exercise used in my practice called “Double Decision” found in the BrainHQ platform. Studies through the Mayo Clinic have shown a direct correlation with improved driving safety and a reduction in the number of car crashes. The exercise was designed to train processing speed, not driving, but it 34 www.cedarcitymag.com

affected the skill of driving because processing speed is important when you’re behind the wheel.

One of the largest and most respected studies ever conducted in adults is known as the ACTIVE study. Funded by the National Institutes of Health and led by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the National Institute on Aging, the Indiana University School of Medicine, Penn State University, and others, the ACTIVE study shows that healthy older adults can make significant cognitive improvements with appropriate cognitive training and practice. Among other things, individual studies have shown that with specific brain stimulation challenges, an individual may experience the following: • An average increase in auditory processing speed of 135% • A doubling, on average, in visual processing speed, with some benefit of training still evident at 5 and 10-year follow-ups • A partial reversal of age-related neural slowing and an improvement

in temporal precision, as measured through brain imaging.

Not everyone believes in the power of brain training. They want proof before they put in the effort; and making change does take effort.

Cedar Orthopaedic Surgery Specialty Clinic Announces New Partner Cedar Orthopaedic Surgery Specialty Clinic welcomed Dr. Ben C. Robinson as a partner in the practice beginning Sept. 24. Dr. Robinson has joined Dr. Randy Delcore after serving in the United States Air force for more than 15 years.

Dr. Robinson is a generalist in the field of orthopaedic surgery with an emphasis in arthroscopic sports surgery, total joint replacement and trauma care, having spent six months serving as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon in Afghanistan.

He is a native of Southern Utah, having grown up in Beaver where his father was a rural family doctor. His wife, JaCoy Robinson, is also a Southern Utah native. She grew up in Cedar City. The Robinsons have five children.

After graduating from Beaver High School in 1990, Dr. Robinson attended the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, earning a degree in biology in 1996. He attended medical school at the University of Utah until 2002 and worked as an Air Force flight surgeon from 2003-2005. His time in residency was spent in a combined military and civilian facility in San Antonio, Texas, which he completed in 2010.

Varicose Veins More than Just a Cosmetic Issue

By Kristy Ann Pike At the end of the day, do you experience tired, swollen, heavy, aching, restless legs?

If so, you are not alone. There are over tens of millions of people who suffer from these symptoms due to varicose veins. While many people have heard about varicose veins, very few truly understand their underlying cause, and the potential they have to develop into serious medical issues. The problems are more than just cosmetic.

Aside from the bulging and unsightly discoloration that can be a result of varicose veins, they can cause leg pain, swelling, and throbbing. If left untreated, varicose veins can progress to more serious complications such as inflammation (phlebitis), blood clots (DVT), skin ulcers, and/or bleeding.

In the past, treatment for varicose veins was almost as painful as (if not worse than) the condition itself. Fortunately, there are new treatments that can eliminate varicose veins and the symptoms associated with venous disease. With new medical technology available here in St. George, those unsightly and potentially dangerous varicosities can be fixed without major surgery, general anesthesia, or the scarring associated with the old fashioned method of “stripping” the veins.

This new state-of-the-art technology is

referred to as radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

This minimally invasive procedure offers the latest advancement in the treatment of varicose veins, and is performed in an outpatient setting.

One of the most important components of RFA is the use of ultrasound to find where the leaky valves are located. Once the doctor has mapped out the veins through ultrasound, local anesthetic is applied and a small catheter is inserted through a tiny entry point. Radio frequency energy is then delivered to seal the faulty vein closed. This procedure, performed in an outpatient setting, takes less than an hour and the patient is encouraged to walk often and resume their normal activities the next day.

RFA is only one of several non-invasive treatments available to treat varicose veins.

Others include: sclerotherapy (medication delivered into the vein to shut it down), phlebectomy (a procedure where a vein is removed through a tiny incision) and spider vein therapy.

These treatments offer options for anyone suffering from varicose veins, not just those with severe, debilitating symptoms. This is a relief for many people, including Jennifer Yates, a mammography technician and

mother of four. “The daily aching and pain of the veins was worse than the pain of my recovery,” says Yates, who developed varicose veins when she was pregnant with her twins.

“I actually worked a 12-hour shift on my feet the day after my procedure.”

Many factors can lead to varicose veins, including: Heredity – One of the most important factors. If your parents or grandparents had varicose veins, you are at an increased risk.

Gender – 40% of women and 25% of men develop varicose veins.

Pregnancy – Increased blood volume and pressure when pregnant can cause varicose veins to develop.

Age – The tissues of our vein walls lose elasticity as we age.

Prolonged standing, obesity, hormone levels, and physical trauma can also contribute to venous disease.

If you experience symptoms of varicose veins, you should consult a physician to see which of the treatments discussed above might be right for you. In most cases, insurance will cover treatment of varicose veins at 80 percent, leaving the patient with some out-of-pocket expenses.

Although the walls and roof of a building are important, the focus has to be on the foundation

Just over five years ago, an accidental fire all but devoured the historic tabernacle in Provo. Its outer walls were still standing, but just barely. The interior had been completely gutted. In the subsequent months, this devastating loss raised many questions of what would become of this historic landmark built in 1885. The decision was made not only to rebuild the tabernacle, but transform it into a temple (a holy place of worship within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). Significant time was spent analyzing how this was going to take place. Steps were taken in order to preserve as much of the exterior of the building as possible, but reinforcements were added to strengthen the brick walls. These exterior walls were placed on 40 foot pillars until a new foundation could be built. After multiple years, the finished project stands as a reminder that beauty truly can rise from ashes.

This incredible architectural accomplishment has caused me to reflect symbolically on the many couples who feel their marriages have been destroyed due to various factors. They wonder if there is any hope of salvaging their marriage. While every situation is different, the transformation of this mostly destroyed tabernacle to a stunning temple engenders hope that a devastated marriage can someday be a stronger and more satisfying marriage than either spouse ever could have imagined. But how can couples who feel their marriage is lost make this transformation? I think there are at least four valuable lessons that can be learned from the Provo Tabernacle turned temple process: 1. Couples must take time to analyze and plan how they will rebuild their marriage.

Before the Provo Temple Project was ever undertaken, there was a clear picture of what they expected that building to look like. Couples must also have a clear vision of where they want their marriage to end up. Couples should spend time discussing the future of their marriage and they may even write down their vision of what they want their marriage to become.

2. Work! Work! Work! Once the plan is in place, there is no adequate replacement for hard work. Successful marriages do not occur randomly; they are the result of couples doing specific things to rebuild their marriage. Dr. Bill Doherty from the University of Minnesota calls this principle “The Intentional Family.” The tabernacle didn’t become a temple overnight, it took lots of time. But couples cannot expect that the passage of time alone will drastically change the marriage; it takes a specific plan that is worked on every day!

3. Determine what foundation you want your marriage to be built upon. Your marriage will only be as strong as its foundation, so take the time to decide what’s most important to you both. While some adhere to the belief that “opposites attract,” the research tells us that the most successful and happy couples have their core beliefs and practices in common with each other. Although the walls and roof of a building are important, the focus has to be on the foundation first. So, when rebuilding a marriage, leave the less important differences for later and focus on building a solid foundation. One consideration is to start on rebuilding the friendship, as many researchers have discovered that a great friendship makes a solid foundation.

4. Pay attention to details! Once the plan is developed and you are working to rebuild your foundation, remember the details. I love the simple quote, “The little things are the big things.” In trying to transform a marriage that seems doomed for destruction, this principle is very true. Be thoughtful of one another and reach out in love to your spouse.

In a perfect world, by age 65 we would all be debtfree. Retirement would mean no mortgage payment, no credit card debt, and no car payments.

The problem is, nothing is ever perfect. If you’re like the rest of us, the last ten years have not gone exactly as planned. The housing market coupled with the economy has hit our seniors and retirees hard.

Here is something to think about as you balance

By Brandon Hansen your finances and continue into 2016 with debt: If you have a mortgage, and you have additional credit card payments or other payments on top of the mortgage, you need to consolidate everything.

It’s as simple as it sounds. Let me explain through an example: Let’s say you have a $150,000 mortgage with a $900/month payment, plus $20,000 in additional credit card or auto loan debt with a $400/month payment. Most credit card interest is between 12 – 20%, and most mortgage loans are significantly lower. So, if you consolidate your other debt into the mortgage loan, you are now paying the low interest rate of the mortgage loan on all your debt. The reason mortgage loans typically carry the lowest interest rate in the market is because they are the most secure. So although your mortgage payment will increase by $50-$100 per month, it is offset by the $400 per month you will be saving in interest. Make sense?

In this example, you would be saving $300 or more a month during your fixed income years. That is a big deal to most of my clients.

Simply put, all you have done is moved your high interest to low interest, and reduced your payments over the long-term. And here’s the key: You can still pay the additional debt off in half the time if you want to. Clients often say, “Well I don’t want to extend my auto or credit cards out over 30 years.” So, don’t. Make the same payment you normally would, and you will still pay off the balance in half the amount of time. By Travis Lott Spring is a great season, for many reasons.

Growing up, my family was always excited for the warmer weather because it meant outdoor sports and swim parties at Grandma’s house! For the younger crowd, this is pretty exciting. For others, it can be terrifying. Especially those of us who have avoided exercise and developed unhealthy habits during the winter. When spring rolls around, we feel very selfconscious, and often avoid getting back on track.

So what should you do? Is it too late to get into decent shape? No way! Anyone can make progress if they put their mind to it. Many of us are procrastinators. How many of us cram in a few days worth of studying before a big test when we know we should’ve put in at least a week? There are many scenarios where we do this: school, church, work, and of course, fitness. Losing a few pounds or putting on some muscle does take effort, but when push comes to shove, I believe most people are capable of getting it done. So let’s do it! Here are three steps to help you “spring” into shape!

Step 1: Get outside, and get moving! Grab your kids, friend, spouse, push the baby in a stroller, or go it alone. Go on a walk, visit the local high school track, or find an empty soccer field where you can play with your kids. If you are completely out of shape, start slowly to prevent injury. Cardiovascular exercise is a great way to burn calories and lose some weight. Most important, you’ll be taking care of your heart.

Step 2: Renew your gym attendance. Wouldn’t it be nice to get what you’re paying for, that is, using the gym that has been charging you even when you don’t go? The key to gym time is strength training. Putting on muscle, whether you’re male or female, is imperative to having a healthy life. You sleep better, have more energy, decreases stress, gain self-confidence, and burn calories during as well as after the workout. Wow! Of course, you don’t have to go the gym to achieve lean muscle. There are plenty of body weight exercises you can do at home that will do the trick. But, if you’re like me, separating my workouts from home life is much more effective.

Step 3: Eat smarter! Toss the treats, candy, and junk food. No time to waste, people! It’s time to stock up on foods that will get you leaner and feeling better.

Remember, half the battle of obtaining these goals starts in the kitchen!

If you take these three simple steps and push forward, a day at a time, you’ll soon find yourself with renewed energy and life. So let go of procrastination and get back on track to become the leaner, healthier version of yourself this spring!

Exercise is Medicine

If losing weight and looking better isn’t enough motivation to inspire you to exercise, how about the fact that the latest research shows that regular physical activity may be the best preventive drug we have for many health problems?

Studies show that exercise reduces the risk of early death, helps control weight, and lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, some types of cancer, anxiety disorders, cognitive decline, and hip fractures. It can even help improve sleep, memory, concentration and mood.

Recent research continues to add benefits to the list. One study found that supervised exercise may help relieve treatment-related pain among some breast cancer patients. Another study showed physical activity may be as effective as medication in preventing early death in people who have had heart attacks or strokes.

Timothy Church, a physician and director of preventive medicine research at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, agrees; “Exercise strengthens the entire human machine – the heart, the brain, the blood vessels, the bones, the muscles. The most important thing you can do for your long-term health is to lead an active life.”

Current studies show that only about 21% of adults in the United States meet the government’s recommendations for aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise. Other research indicates that people are even less active than those statistics suggest. Scientists with the National Cancer Institute found that fewer than 5% of adults in the United States get at least 30 minutes a day of moderate-intensity physical activity in bouts of at least 10 minutes at a time. The government’s physical activity guidelines advise having at least two and a half hours a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, or one hour and fifteen minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as jogging. The guidelines for adults also recommend muscle-strengthening activities such as push-ups, sit-ups and lifting weights.

Everyone has a different reason to be motivated to exercise, but most people need to have a plan or program that they can stick with. Tony Horton, the creator and star of the popular P90X, workout series, agrees. “Often people care too much about the mirror, scale, and tape measure, and when they don’t change at the speed they anticipate, they quit. They expect tremendous results in an unrealistic amount of time. I talk about consistency, purpose, and a plan. If you are consistent with your exercise, you will thrive. If you want to thrive, you have to be consistent and you have to have a plan. Surround yourself with likeminded people. I am someone who exercises with someone else most of the time. There is someone in the room who challenges me, whose company I enjoy.”

If you are resolving to shape up for the new year, exercise is one half of the equation. Diet is the other. Keep food simple and natural. If it occurs in nature, eat it. If it doesn’t expire until 2020, don’t eat it.

There are many health issues you can’t control, but two things you very much can control are what you eat and whether you exercise. These two things alone will change your life.

Celebrate the Role of Law in Our Society

During this time of year, we have the opportunity to celebrate three great Americans. In January, we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and in February, we celebrate the births of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We usually give little thought to these days beyond what activities can be planned with the kids out of school. However, these holidays also give us a chance to consider the contributions of these three men to our free society.

We also rarely give conscious thought to the influence of laws on our lives. Most of us are aware of the practicalities of the law in our daily regimens, such as how fast the law will allow us to drive on our way home from work, or when the law requires us to file our annual tax return. Even as an attorney, I find that my consideration of the law is almost exclusively related to the day-to-day needs of my clients.

Our country is a nation founded and operating upon the rule of law.

The framework of laws provides a foundation upon which our society stands, the principal cornerstone being the Constitution. Ironically, the latticework of law through which our daily lives are threaded allows us the life and liberty to freely pursue happiness, without much thought for the laws that preserve these inalienable rights.

Washington, Lincoln and King understood the importance of laws in both maintaining and advancing American society.

Washington expressed concern about the proper administration of the law when he said that “[i]mpressed with a conviction that the due administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good Government, I have considered the first arrangement of the Judicial department as essential to the happiness of our Country, and to the stability of its political system.” (Letter to first U.S. Attorney General Edmund Randolph, 28 September 1789.)

Lincoln, during an 1838 address in Springfield, Illinois, said, “Let reverence for the laws, be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap - let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primmers, spelling books, and in Almanacs; let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice.”

King, the great advocate of civil disobedience, believed that not all laws deserved our deference. He wrote: “[T]here are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws.

One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws.

Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. . . .
