why it has been a long time coming.

But, finally we are here and ready to

show you everything we have been wor-

king on! And we are very excited to do

came like cinnamon, so sweet”, and while the arrival of summer is very sweet indeed, it also entails a few events that can seem rather bittersweet. The 3rd years, and of course the 2 year masters, have finished their theses and are now moving on to new adventures, perhaps at the IBP-ma-

The 2nd years Bsc’s as well as the 1st year Msc’s are getting ready for their exchanges or interships and a new bunch of 1st years are ready to begin after summer. In this sense, the release of the magazine could not have come at a better time. The main point of the magazine is to further strengthen the IBP ”spirit”, as well as to provide for a platform in which the IBP alumni can be celebrated and as a way to look back and reminisce. We hope that, going forward, the magazine can provide for exactly these points. Thanks have to be

BIO: Gustav Plantin is a Bsc. IBP student at 2nd year. He is originally from the city of Särslöv (good luck trying to pronouce that) close to Malmö, but currently recides in Frederiksberg with his girlfriend.

Gustav has previously received awards for his dedication to Staffanstorp United as well as his leadership skills, and attended Lund University before joining IBP. Gustav is 22 years old.

Do you wish to continue with similar things in the future?

It’s definitely something I consider and I’m actually starting the Swedish Football Association’s leadership academy this October. Football is a great platform for affecting and contributing to the society. It is the world’s largest sport – but with great power comes great (social) responsibility. That’s what I have tried to accentuate in my own organization. I think that on a global level, there is a lot more to be done in terms of social justice, integration and not least gender equality. It’s always flattering to be recognized by others, no matter if it’s by a classmate or the King, but the recognition itself isn’t the inducement – that’s our activities. Seeing how, for example, the football team for children with special needs, that my girlfriend runs, has grown from 4 to 30 children in less than a year is truly motivating. I love telling the story from last year, when the team was newly started and all five children had received brand new match kits. After a while it turned out that all of them – independent of each other – also had worn these clothes when

they attended their schools’ end of term ceremony! That story tells a lot; football is often more than just a game.

You were part of kitchen team last intro. What is your best advice for the new freshies?

I think the cabin trip was one of the highlights last year. You get a chance to get to know your classmates in a new way at the same time as you’re being served first-class gourmet food.

The most important thing is to stay open-minded, social and not criticizing the chefs.

What is the best thing about IBP? And why did you choose the study to begin with?

It may sound corny, but definitely the social aspects of the programme. There are so many socially talented people, and it makes the studying a lot easier. Moreover, I really like the interdisciplinary features of the programme.

Creative thinking and a comprehensive understanding of political and economic forces is necessary in order to meet the challenges of the future.

Lastly, if you could give one good advice for people considering applying for IBP, what would it be?

Do it! Then pass the exams and avoid sexual transmitted diseases.

Wonder what’s really going on in the IBP Union?

This section will provide you with an overview of the ideas and projects that are in the pipeline – written by the leading figures themselves.

Cirkeline Nielsen President of IBP Union Life in the IBP Union has been pretty (sort of) smooth sailing since we, the new Board, took over following the General Assembly. After the torch was passed, IBP Union has been very busy with a variety of events and discussions of different issues. Some of our main focuses for this first period have been updating the IBP Union website and streamlining our social media by creating one single channel for all IBP related information.

In addition to this we have been working towards more transparency from the Board so that hopefully the IBP students have some insight into what the Board actually does, other than drinking coffee and having 'meetings'. //Cirkeline Nielsen, President of IBP Union

Morten Lund Jensen Head of Academic I am currently coordinating events for the fall semester with the other members of academic, so that we have events ready as soon as we get back from the summer break. We have events with Deloitte, Qvartz and Prokura in the pipeline, so we're really excited for the fall semester. Carl Rørbye Head of Social With a bunch of recent successful events ranging from Spring diner and Friday bar to the yearly IBP Gala, the members of the IBP Social committee have once again shown their great abilities of organizing events of high quality to the people of our engaged and social study programme. In the future of IBP Social, we will put hard work into continuously improving our already existing social events by, for instance, outlining organized budgets prior to our events, improving the internal team communication through communication channels and allocating more people on larger events that require substantial planning. We will aim to facilitate and exercise our core values such as inclusiveness and collaboration by engaging all members in the discussion forums and further ensure that each member will have a say in the decision-making processes regarding upcoming events. It can certainly be said that I am extremely excited about the future of our events as well as our committee in general, and I remain confident that we, the members of the committee, will continue to deliver diverse social events to satisfy the social needs of our people here at IBP. // Carl Rørbye, Head of IBP Social

Dear IBPers I should start with some congratulations. I am not sure entirely who has been involved in the production of the IBP Magazine and I haven’t seen the finished product but I am sure that you’ve done a grand job. Magazines, like events, involve a lot of effort. I hope that the magazine will add to all the other initiatives now being undertaken that are giving IBP an identity and visibility above and beyond the things that happen in the classroom.

My brief is to contribute something from my side of the academic aisle. And there’s a lot happening at the moment. From September the restructured MSc programme starts operations. Changing the character of a programme is inevitably rather risky. As the saying goes “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.

And the IBP MSc certainly isn’t broke. It attracts a lot of strong applicants and incorporates many popular courses. Nonetheless, we have a responsibility to ensure that IBP is directly relevant to the job market and we have therefore updated the programme to include, amongst other things, more of an emphasis on economics and policymaking processes.

That’s just the start of it. There is much else going on. We are looking at ways of introducing continuous assessment so that there are more bite-sized tests and less depends upon the exam at the end of each course. That also offers an opportunity for greater ‘feedback’ and dialogue between staff and students about the strengths and weaknesses of a particular assignment. We are also considering the phased introduction of blended learning so that there is a mix between online provision and more traditional forms of teaching.

One other thing, There seems to have been an uptick in student activities .. societies .. debates .. study trips … initiatives of one kind or another.

This can only be welcomed. A university consists of more than lectures and exercise classes. Certainly, from my time at university, I have rather more vivid memories of student union activities and societies than I do of classes and lectures. My own opinion is that we need more civil society at CBS. Robert Putnam moaned to anyone who would listen (actually quite a few listened including both Bill Clinton and Tony Blair) that social ties and bonds had frayed. Like any claim it is subject to argument but nonetheless there are things we can do to facilitate closer associations. From September, thanks to a proposal from student reps in the Study Board, almost all IBP exercise classes will consist of the same people across courses. We were lucky to attract volunteers this time around and there should be a proper MSc Intro. And we plan a ‘townhall’ meeting in October.

There are of course limits to what we can do. Time and resources are in very short supply. And, to be honest, the very last thing you want is for me or my colleagues to try and organize student activities. It would be, I promise, a disaster area. So .. IBPers .. over to you, Eddie.

Hi everyone My name is Line, and I am a 2nd year BSc student and the vice-chair of our IBP study board. If “study board” has an unfamiliar ring to it, I am here to clarify a few things The study board is IBP’s link between the students and the rest of the CBS institution. This is not always an easy task, so we have a pack of people working for the programme to run smoothly. For example Helle and Charlotte, our administrative wizards that take care of all of our questions, requests, dispensations, scheduling hazards, etc. Additionally, we have Eddie, the programme director and approximately 5 students and 5 professors in charge of credit transfers, approval of exchange courses and dispensations.

Being the link between CBS and IBP students, we in general work to make the best possible version of the programme, socially as well as academically. We discuss how to best implement the ambitions from the Dean’s Office into the individual courses, and furthermore the ideas from the students, alumni, professors and course coordinators through the evaluations, meetings and dialogues. Jyske Bank x IBP Academic Stock Exchange Games Throughout the year IBP students have been invited to Jyske Bank to learn about stock exchange. Every group created their own portfolio and could trade on a weekly basis.

At each event we gained insight into a new aspect of stock exchange followed by a group-working session and (great!!) sandwiches. The games cumulated at the IBP Gala where we all had to realize that the group delivering a 212 % interest on their portfolio from the start of the games were unbeatable. Stefan, Markus, Rasmus and Kasper (2nd year) can now look forward to spending a day at Jyske Bank's head offices in Silkeborg.

We have been very happy with these continuous events and our collaboration with Jyske Bank this year, and are looking forward to a new round of the Stock Exchange Games next semester.

What I have found especially important is a good Tahini. I am lucky to live next to many small middle eastern food stores in Vesterbro, and I recommend going to one similar. Here they have the kind which is light and smooth, and not dark and sticky as the one in the regular food stores. You should be able to find it in your local one - aim for the stores that have vegetables outside and that are not part of a big chain!

To begin your hummus making you open up your canned chickpeas,

and pour out a third of the chickpea water - keep the rest! This is crucial, as this water will make the hummus fluffy (look up aquafaba meringue if you don't know about the properties of chickpea water - it's amazing).

Put it in the blender together with the tahini, garlic, lemon, cumin, salt

and pepper. Blend for a long time, as you want to get rid of any lumps and have the chickpea water start doing its thing.

This is the step when you add the oil, and potentially more water or

tahini to perfect the consistency of your hummus. Taste as you go to make sure that the spice balance is right!

for a long time in the fridge. Usually it is a good idea to make a large batch, and more. Serve it with a yogurt topping called Raita, Naan bread, and a small decorating amount of fresh coriander - perfection!

Take your red lentils in a strainer and run cold water on them. They

should be washed thoroughly, and be wet while you prepare the rest of the Dahl.

Cut up the union, ginger and garlic. Put it in a pan with oil on medium

heat to make it soft. This is where you put in the spices as well. As there is a lot of spices it might become slightly dry, not to worry!

Cut up your carrots in small pieces, in any style of own liking and put

them in - letting them cook for a short while with the spices and onions.

Then put in the tomatoes, the vegetable stock, and last the lentils.

Let the dahl cook for about 30-40 mins. If the liquid disappears too

fast, add water. You know that it’s done when the lentils are soft but slightly chewy and it’s not too watery. Remember to regularly stir the dish, as

For the raita: measure the amount of yogurt that you need. Grate the

cucumber into a quite small size and then press out excess liquid. Add the grated and pressed cucumber, garlic, and cumin to the yoghurt. Finish of with pepper and salt and serve!

the one with tomatoes, squash, and leeks Quiche prep time 50 min 1 leek 3 big tomatoes 1 squash 1 premade pie crust (this can also be made from scratch if your energy level is greater than mine) 3 eggs 1,5 dl milk or heavy cream 250 g grams ricotta cheese (other types of cheese can also be used) 0.5-1 dl flour depending on whether milk or heavy cream is used Spices Salt Pepper 1 tsp nutmeg (optional) 1 tsp basil (optional) Topping Feta cheese (optional)

Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

Prebake the pie crust for 15 minutes. Do not forget to butter your pie

pan and prick holes in the dough with a fork to allow it to breathe.

While the pie crust is in the oven, prepare the vegetables. Cut the

tomatoes and the squash in thin slices. Cut a line in the leek from top to bottom and rinse it thoroughly under rinsing water (make sure all dirt is removed). Cut the leek up and sauté it on a hot pan with some oil for five minutes.

Pour eggs, milk/heavy cream, and ricotta cheese into a bowl and stir it.

Add the flour and stir again.

Add salt, pepper, nutmeg, and basil (other herbs can be used).

Take the prebaked pie crust out of the oven. Put the slices of tomatoes

and squash on the bottom, add the leeks, and pour our egg-cheese mix over the vegetables.

Add cut up feta cheese on top (optional).

Bake for 35 minutes until the pie crust is golden brown and the quiche

is firm all the way through (check with a fork).

Let it sit for five to ten minutes before eating.

RUSSIAN STYLE

What else was on the program? The study trip team had arranged several visits for us. On our first day we visited Velux and the lady presenting gave a good impression of how the many business regulations in Russia pose a challenge, and how the Crimea annexation has impacted the business, and in general she was very honest about the political situation. Also, she added that when Velux first opened up a Russian branch, the only thing the Russian people knew of Denmark was Copenhagen and H. C. Andersen. The day after, we were at the Danish Embassy followed by a visit to Danish Industry, and again both gave us insight in how it is to navigate around Russia’s political and business environment.

Cultural highlight: we were fortunate to be in Moscow on Victory Day, which is an annual celebration of the German surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945 and where the soldiers are honored. We have realized that the Russians are a bit sparse with information which made it quite difficult to find the perfect time and spot to watch the parade, also the jets never came due to bad weather, but some managed to join a parade. It was truly an experience seeing the streets and parks full of Russian families celebrating and remembering as well as the fireworks later and some street dancing (Russian style).

Other fun and touristy stuff: The Red Square with St. Basil’s Church and the Moscow Kremlin, a fortified complex including four cathe-

drals, five palaces and hosts the Russian Senate, was of course also on the program.

Besides the planned itinerary, we had time to explore Moscow on our own. Some took advantage of the great art Moscow has to offer, some visited the Gulag Museum. Also, a group went to the Russian Ballet one night, others to a football game, some explored the fine dining opportunities at favorable prices as well as the bar/clubbing scene. Moscow had so much to offer, and beautiful parks, churches and buildings were everywhere, and we definitely reached above the 10.000 steps daily aim, sometimes being a bit lost and always overwhelmed by the huge distances in this 12 million people-city.

Coolest Russian person: The language barrier made it somewhat difficult to have deep conversations with the Russian people, but we did get to talk to some very cool and open people and we had an interesting conversation with a young Moscow guy one night (after a couple of White Russians). He shed light on the fact that Russian young people are aware of the political circumstances and how Russia is viewed in most of the Western democracies. However, it is very difficult for them to change anything because they will simply lose their jobs. Also, the older generation are not aware to the same extent because they do not follow the international news channels and their opinions are very much affected by the national news as well as their memories from the past. Most of my courses have been at the Global Studies Department and classes are in small 30 people format. It is quite a big difference at CBS with lectures of around 150 people. We had to be more active in the class, and attendance is mandatory. Also, we had to do much more homework than at CBS, including presentations, group work, midterm exam, essays etc. But it was all manageable. The teachers are very nice and helpful.

What are the gains of IBP, what differences comes with being a Master compared to being a bachelor and why tears might pressure when soon turning in their thesis and leaving CBS and the IBP environment.

Why did you choose the IBP master over others?

I have bachelor’s degree in economics and felt that I wanted to do something slightly different for my master to get a broader profile. I think part of the attraction with IBP was the interdisciplinary profile you get, which is great for someone who still wants to be flexible when it comes to future employers. Next year the master programme will see some major changes and be even more flexible in terms of how you want to niche your profile, which I think is great!

People are without a doubt more result-oriented, but I was still positively surprised by how open, welcoming and easy-going the atmosphere was in our class from day one.

What weight do you give to your student job/internship vs. your studies and do you feel that future employees place more emphasis on a student relevant job than a high GPA?

What is the biggest difference study-wise/socially between your bachelor and master degree?

Having done mostly calculus-based courses in economics during my bachelor, it took a while to get used to all the readings… My impression is that the overall course work is definitely more extensive on the master’s level, as it should be. There is also a significantly higher requirement on the level of analysis in exams, the effort you need to put into presentations and the time you need to put into your studies to do well.

The whole IBP programme is built around the possibility of working alongside your studies in a way, and the schedule definitely allows it. To juggle studies, an employment and potentially other extracurricular activities at the same time shows an employer that you have both drive and an ability prioritize and plan your time. That being said, some of the big consultancies do indeed still value a high GPA, so I guess it all depends on where you want to end up. My general tip is to focus on activities you enjoy and are enthusiastic about, because that is probably where you will excel and where you engagement will make a difference!

What do you find as the most valuable academic and personal skill attained from the IBP master program?

Apart from improving my knowledge in qualitative methods, I would actually say it’s the ability to see complex issues from different angles. The first year on the IBP master involves so many practical cases to solve that you are forced to twist and turn your arguments and really challenge your reasoning to address challenges. The fact that you fellow classmates have so different academic backgrounds makes discussions in class diverse, and you never quite know where discussions in class might end up – in a positive way!

If I only knew that, haha… I am very much in the process of choosing a subject myself, and since it is going to be the single largest written product most of us will do in our academic career, you want it to be something you are really engaged in. If nothing else, that makes it so much easier to put in that extra effort. I think it is a good idea to already from the start of your studies try to write down short notes or subjects that you find particularly interesting in your courses. Whether it is a short segment or discussion in a lecture or a whole course that you are enthusiastic about doesn’t really matter. If you write down whatever catches your attention every once in a while, you will eventually end up with a good collection of research topics to choose from when it’s time to pick a subject for your thesis.
