Dear new student, Welcome to International Business and Politics (IBP) and CBS. I very much hope that you will have three challenging but rewarding years. By the end of your studies, you should have an advanced knowledge and understanding of business, politics, economics and the methodologies to which they are tied. You will have multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary skills. You will be in a very strong position when it comes to an MSc degree or the labour market. Having said that, much will depend upon your input. You will need to what sub-fields within politics call “navigational skills”. CBS systems can at times seem complex or even impenetrable. Make sure that you are familiar with the different web platforms and use the Student Hub. (But – please – don’t ask the academic staff about administrative queries. There is a division of labour in higher education). Even more importantly, try to get engaged. IBP is not a programme where you can just roll along. Ask questions in class. Don’t leave discussions to the 10-15 people who are always the most vocal. If you are unsure about something or want feedback then ask, (although not by email .. that isn’t a good medium for academic discussions). Take full advantage of the office hours provided by full-time members of the teaching staff. Find out about course requirements at an early stage. And contribute to our governance system by volunteering as a course representative or putting yourself forward as a candidate in the annual Study Board elections. Policymaking involves hard choices. Make those choices with us. I will be teaching the first part of the Political Science course and I look forward to meeting each and every one of you. If we pass each other in a corridor or between buildings please say hello (even if I look bewildered).

Which tricks and advice would you give to IBPers who would like to apply for dorm-living? Do not focus your application on how you can benefit from living in a dorm. Yet, focus on your personal significances and why you find living in a dorm appealing. When you’re not bended over books or out with friends, you’re known to be found at Torvehallerne practising the craft of coffee-making for some of Copenhagen’s most quality-demanding and coffee-loving clientele. Where can you (unbiasedly) get the best coffee in Copenhagen? I would definitely check out Prolog Coffee at the meatpacking district. They are famously known for their “set”. That is, a single shot of espresso and a small cappuccino. Which three jazz songs should be on every barista's playlist? Depends on the mood or if it is busy. So, here goes three jazz songs for different times of the day. In the morning I would listen to ‘It Is Always You’ by Chet Baker. ‘Cantaloupe Island’ by Herbie Hancock is a great tune for the busier hours in the afternoon. At last, ‘So What’ by Miles Davis is more fitting for the cosier hours in the evening.

Besides being an IBP Tutor, you’re also a part of CBS Students. What CBS functions and experiences do you recommend new students to take advantage of or engage in, outside of the IBP programme? I would definitely recommend being a part of a student society or a student union. You can attend events hosted by multiple student organisations and find your perfect fit. There, you do not only gain distinguishing skills and experiences, but also meet many people from different study lines with different interests and perspectives.

In this same vein, without going into the many apocryphal legends about who was first to use the term, DJs, bandleaders, and musicians started yelling "Salsa" as they were introducing a particularly energetic musical act or to spur the dancers and musicians on to more frenetic activity. The word "Salsa" was invoked to spice up the music and dancing. The tempo is fast, and the musical energy is exuberant - and this intro group is full of this heat and confidence!

What are you best tips for balancing a demanding study-schedule with leisure activities and private life? You will never be able to do everything! So, it is about recognizing that and then try to prioritize. I’m personally a planner so I like to plan ahead to make sure I have time to what is important to me. What’s your favourite spot(s) in Copenhagen? Copenhagen has something for every mood and season, and the places and things I do really change accordingly. In the summer, the lakes are amazing and the beach at Amager strand is definitely worth going to. In the winter, going to galleries such as GL strand or bringing your laptop to a good cafe suits the weather better. With that said, I often find myself returning to Glyptoteket, Værnedamsven and Kødbyn regardless of time of the year. There is a large variety amongst CBS societies - which smaller societies have you been a part of and would recommend to new students whose interest go beyond business and social endeavours? I would recommend everyone to prioritize their own hobbies and interests, even though the studies can be time consuming. Making time for what you find meaning in truly enriches your everyday life, and I am convinced it will ultimately help you with learning. For those interested in art, I encourage you to join me and the rest of the team of CBS Art Initiative, it's the best! Fellow Swedes ABBA were some of the pioneers of the Disco scene. What will you do to embrace the Disco spirit for Intro? To get in spirit - it's all about letting yourself go to the fun grooviness of disco. My advice is, be open minded and have a positive approach to the games and activities that is prepared. They are created with the motive of getting people to know each other and bringing everyone closer as a first priority, and you never know what good friends you can make during intro!

You are a part of the CBS Climate Club, as well as working with the Copenhagen Fashion Summit as a student job - which tips do you have for managing multiple hobbies and responsibilities beyond your student-life? Try to find extracurriculars or work that you enjoy and find interesting - it makes it less tedious and can instead be a way to learn more or recharge. Understand what you want to prioritise so you can channel your energy on what you find most important and get the best results there instead of fair results all around. Dolly Parton infamously sang “Working 9 to 5” - but lectures, studying and working does rarely fit into one specific time-frame. How do you go about time-managing all your activities? I like combining actives when possible watching video lectures while cooking dinner during first semester definitely saved my micro exam. I also use my calendar way more than before, plotting in specific timeslots for reading the next chapter, for working or for seeing friends. What are your favourite spots for sustainable fashion shopping? Secondhand shopping is both climate and SU-friendly - Veras Marked at Bispebuen every Sunday during summer is my go-to place for pre-loved clothes. If you are into the sleek business look, Filippa K in Illum is a good but more pricey option. With a background in Musical Performance and other cool career experiences, what attracted you to enter the IBP programme? What I like about IBP is that it’s a very broad programme that opens up for many different opportunities and makes your profile more international in case you’re considering a career outside of Denmark. What are the biggest Folk and Country Anthems, you wish to play during intro? For the modern country “Old Town Road” and “Shallows”, but if we’re going in a more classic direction, then Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5”, Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” and even Shania Twain’s “I’m gonna getcha good” are big players. What have you considered to be the most challenging, when adapting to being a student again? Definently adapting to going from having a fulltime paycheck to being on SU again! That, and also the fact that you have to set the boundaries for when you’re “off work” as you can always read more at home.

Rock has been feared by legislators and celebrated by the rebellious youth. This intro group can't be controlled and will take on the powerful and intense style of Rock and Heavy Metal. Grunge is the look and there will be a lot of headbanging to music turned up to the absolutely highest volume.

Besides tutoring, you are also one of the three mentors for IBP. What has been your motivation for engaging in the IBP student community? First of all, I believe that the IBP student community is working as good as it does now because of all the people participating and engaging in it. In addition, the engagement is both a good experience, while it is also brings with it a lot of enjoyable activities with it. My own mentors and tutors did a super good job in fulfilling these roles, and they have definitely also sparked my own motivation. As a mentor, you have a nice grasp on how to manage different study techniques and approaches to uni-life - what has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned throughout your first year of studying? One of the most important ones that comes to my mind regarding study techniques is to be open to new ways of studying. Life at university is very different from gymnasium / high school, and it can be smart not to let yourself be stuck in habits too fast, but rather testing things out in a dynamic manner. This is due to all the courses and teachers being very different – in my eyes, taking notes in political science and microeceonomics in an effective manner should be done differently. Nominated by your peers for “Best Dressed Male 2019”,- what and who will be your biggest inspiration for preparing your heavy metal/rock outfits for intro? In my early days, I played a reprehensible amount of Guitar Hero 2 – an incredible game, if you would ask my 9-year old self. I will go on a nostalgic journey and dig back into this great period of my life, hopefully finding some style inspiration from my old music icons.

If you want to stay within the CBS area, Destemino is the best when it comes to both taste and prices. What is your best tip to tackle getting a perhaps disappointing exam result? Remember to focus on the learning curve and a personal tip is to remind yourself what you’ve learned in spite of a disappointing grade; an exam is a very concentrated product of what you’ve been learning for weeks, and multiple factors could have come into play when deciding upon your grade. The most important part about learning from the courses is to be able to apply them beyond campus! As per wanting to improve for the next exam, perhaps re-strategize your learning methods for the next course if you feel your grade was due to you not getting the right grasp around the curriculum during the course or exam-prep. During your gap years you moved to Australia on your own - what are your best tips for adapting freshies to learn a new place and perhaps also cope with a bit of homesickness? * What helped me with homesickness was to find a nice balance between talking to my family and friends from back home, whilst still spending a lot of time to get to know my new area and the friends I made there. It is nice knowing that most likely other freshies are experiencing the same thing as you. As per adapting to Copenhagen as a city, I encourage you to seek out the different activities; there is a little bit for everyone! A long unplanned trip on the bike is also a great way to get to know Copenhagen like a true local!

You have been preparing the Intro Period for months, crunching numbers in Excel and encouraging all the other tutors - what are you most looking forward to for Intro?The people! Kezia and I had our first talks about intro in early February and with the input of the whole tutor team, we have been working hard to create an exciting study start for our new fellow students, who I’m super curious to meet. Both you and your co-tutor grew up in the ‘00s, the ultimate pop-culture era.

You live in the beautiful coastal city Hellerup just a few kilometres North of Copenhagen - If you need a break from Copenhagen, which spots would you recommend for a day-trip? One of the spots in Denmark I love to visit for a day trip is Hornbæk, which is located approximately one and a half hour north from Copenhagen and offers a broad range of nice beaches, nice cafes and small local stores. Furthermore, it has an iconic harbor with great seafood restaurants that are worth a visit. It is definitely a good place to be during the summer months and the vibe is always good. Another favorite day-trip spots of mine is Helsingør, which is a city located in the Northern part of Sealand. It is well-known for its beautiful “Kronborg Castle” in which one of the famous Danish legends “Holger Danske” rests in the basement. Not only is the castle a UNESCO world heritage site, it also appears to have inspired William Shakespeare who included Kronborg (not by its real name though) in his famous play “Hamlet”. Apart from the castle, the city also has some great museums and architectural beauties that I personally like a lot. Lastly, I can recommend a day trip to Odense, which is the third largest city of Denmark. The city has some amazing art galleries, a big zoo and numerous museums dedicated to the greatest Danish literary figure, H.C. Andersen.
What are your best pop-related memories? If somebody walked into my childhood room in the ‘00s, they would find the walls covered in posters of pop stars and movie icons. I especially idolized female artists, such as Britney and a Finnish pop duo Nylon Beat, and even adopted a similar You’re infamously sharp and quick in music quizzes nasal tone for a while when singing which three Pop songs do you consider to be the most (mainly to annoy my dad). DOM What are your best tips to survive the danish eternally-feeling winter? We can all agree that winter is god awful in Denmark, however I do have some tips to fight the cold. Embrace thermal underwear as soon as the cold comes! I know that it’s super unsexy but that and a lot of homemade hygge dinners with your friends will have you feeling warm and cozy. Besides an intense and at times almost dangerously busy bike traffic, what has been some challenges you have experienced in Copenhagen, and what advice do you have for IBPs who are new to Copenhagen? The greatest shock for me coming from South Africa to Copenhagen would definitely have to be how expensive everything is here. I’d seriously recommend making some kind of budget in the beginning, bike when possible and get creative with your home cooking skills. The Schlagger genre is quite the opposite of your love for techno and Die Antwoord - which elements of Schlagger are you most excited to embrace? To be honest, I still have no idea what Schlagger is, but let’s just say I’m super excited to pretend to be Heidi and wear plaits and a dirndl!
•Besides studying, you’re also working for Borsch. What are the upsides and potential downsides to having a student job? What advice would you give future IBPs who are interested in getting a student job, or are worried about time-management? The most notable upsides to student jobs are the income and experience gained through them. However, often overlooked downsides can be the toll it takes on one's social and academic student life, as time spent on your job is time not spent elsewhere. Having a student job, and how one manages the time associated with it, is different for each person - and for each job. Personally, as long as money isn't an issue, I'd advice new students not to worry too much about getting a job within the first year of your study - and if you end up getting one, keeping a schedule or writing down reminders really can do wonders.
With a German-Austrian heritage, you’re quite the candidate for this year’s Schlager theme - in which ways will you encourage your fellow tutor and freshies to get into the Schlager spirit? It truly might be hard to get in the mood for Schlager in a flat country like Denmark. Especially when Schlager nowadays is mostly played in après-ski bars or Majorcan mass discos, and there is no particular ritual to resort to, as with the infamous pills and EDM combo. But close your eyes, imagine yourself in the alps surrounded by mountains, donned in a traditional dress, beer in your hand, feather hat on your head and the best music you’ve ever heard in your ears. That sets the stage for the Schlager. Maybe you hear a bit of Austrian Hansi in the distance, or some Swedish ABBA - it doesn't matter, the Schlager has chosen you.

Too many people think they can just roll up and claim techno as theirs because of the lifestyle around techno – going out, clubs, drugs – when they don't even know what BPM is. It's an intellectually competitive genre to be a fan of, and you might be called out by this intro group for not knowing the technicalities behind the music. However, these guys know how to rave and will completely put a spell on the dancefloor!

What has been your favourite memory from your own intro? So many great things come to mind and I really can´t pick one! Cabin trip, so many fun activities during the days and tons of great nights out... What are you favourite activities to do in Copenhagen? During the summer I love going to the beach at Amager Strandpark or one of the Harbour Baths for a swim and some sun. When I need a break from city life I go to Frederiksberg Have for the greenery and of course to look at the elephants. Why did you choose to study IBP? I choose to study IBP because I really wanted to find a program that allows you to balance both politics and business and find the interconnections between the two. In addition it has a great reputation for a course with lots of involvement and social life outside of the classroom. Finally, it also offered me a great opportunity to study abroad in a fantastic and lively city for my bachelor.

HOTSPOTS IN COPENHAGEN The lakes and Dronning Louises Bro Go for a stroll and try to catch the beautiful views of the sunset. The lakes make a perfect setting for a date due to its surroundings and nearby coffee shops. Dronning Louises Bro is known as the place to be during the summer if you want to enjoy a couple of beers and suck in the summer vibe of Copenhagen. Glyptoteket If you are into art, Glyptoteket is the place to go visit. They have different exhibitions all year long but hurry up if you want to see their Pierre Bonnard exhibition, which is recommended by our own Carolina and Adam, who are the heads of CBS Art. Kødbyen Try mother for a great pizza or NOHO for some drinks. If you are into coffee, go see Prolog Coffee whose owner is the Danish barista champion. Botanical Garden The Botanical Garden is hard to notice if not knowing it, but please do yourself a favor and go visit! The glasshouse is a must for a plant lover, and their butterfly garden is packed with beautiful butterflies. Refshaleøen Even though having high prices, Refshaleøen has some pretty good street food. The famous beer brand, Mikkeller, has a large variety of speciality beers which go along nicely with all the delicious food. Torvehallerne Torvehallerne is a Spanish inspired food market at which you can enjoy everything from sushi to olives. When you have found your cravings, go to Israels Plads, which is right next to the food courts, and enjoy your food in the sun. Jægersborggade Jægersborggade was once a place for human- and drug-trafficking, but has now turned into a place for entrepreneurs and startups with crazy and innovative ideas. You should definitely check out ISTID and Plantepølsen.

Taking off from the tutors, the mentors will arrange 4 meetings throughout the first semester - covering important topics such as study techniques, the subjects of the first semester and exams. The mentor sessions are a chance for all IBP students to meet in smaller groups and raise any questions or discussions important at the moment.

SURVIVAL GUIDE Best bathrooms CBS has many fantastic buildings and facilities, but we are going to be very honest - the bathrooms in the corridor Solbjerg Plads does not qualify as a top-experience. Since we are spending a lot of time in this building, here are some good alternatives. * Bathrooms by the big auditoriums in the very end of SP * Bathrooms on the first and second floor on the balcony of SP, just go up the stairs - no one uses these! * In the cellar underneath the cantine in SP Food at a discount Every day, when the cantine is open, there will be a discount of the buffet food after the major lunch and dinner service. You go there, grab a box and only pay 15 DKK to fill it! It begins at 2 PM and a little while onwards, but make sure to be there around 15 minutes before. Usually there is a big line. Also there is another one at 7pm if there is any food left. Second-hand books Connect with the groups from CBS students on Facebook, for example @Copenhagen Business School Connect Here students often sell their books for courses they have already completed, or you can make a post saying what you are searching for. You can come across some really good deals! Be careful with the books that you need some kind of online pass with though, as it is usually unique for every year. Note that you can book books in the library as well! How to book a study room / study seat If you have a study group, or want to have a place to discuss a project in your own room - there is the opportunity to book study rooms in many of CBS's buildings. For example, Kilen has some amazing ones! Through this booking platform, you can also book a single study seat in the libraries, which is crucial during exam periods, when they are filled with people studying and it can be really hard to find a place to sit. You can find the link on my.cbs.dk or just google "book study seat cbs" and you will find the system where you make your booking. Several libraries During exam periods, the library at SP can be completely filled and this might not create the best environment for studying. But not to worry! There are several libraries on CBS campuses. The one at Dalgas Have is quiet and full of light, so it's a really good alternative to SP. Another gem that is almost unknown is the Graduate House. It's slightly farther away, but definitely worth trying out!
