EDITORIAL he two islands of Ibiza and Formentera are surrounded by the sea, a sea that is in danger. With beautiful bays, fantastic beaches and crystal clear water, they are among the most popular destinations worldwide. In campaigns promoting tourism, they are even advertised as the last paradise in the Mediterranean. However, this paradise is threatened by an invisible disease: microplastics. Anyone swimming in the seemingly pristine waters of the Pitiusas probably does not suspect that they are swimming in plastic. Per square meter, there are 1000 minute plastic particles in the water, which are barely visible to the naked eye.

We are so proud of the particularly tasty locally caught fish, crabs, crawfish and mussels here; but their bodies all contain plastic already. This sad fact is practically irreversible.

We should thus ensure that this condition does not get any worse.

The international non-profit organization, Oceanic Global Foundation http://oceanic.global/ made it its goal to draw attention to this situation and raise awareness of this problem. To that end, Ibiza Town was chosen as the event venue. It was to be a big festival attracting many visitors with cultural events, great art installations and music and talks by marine biologists. Nonetheless, the Town Hall rejected it on the spurious grounds that such an event was just a pretext for a mega party. In the end, the festival took place on a smaller scale in Atzaró.

We should do better than these politicians do and act instead of just talking. Avoid plastic wherever possible, starting off when you go shopping. Let us all conserve our paradise!

as dos islas de Ibiza y Formentera están rodeadas por el mar, un mar que está en peligro. Sus bellas bahías, fantásticas playas y aguas cristalinas hacen que estén entre los destinos más populares del mundo. En las campañas de promoción del turismo, se anuncian como el último paraíso del Mediterráneo. Sin embargo, este paraíso está amenazado por una enfermedad invisible: los microplásticos. Cualquiera que nade en las aguas, aparentemente prístinas, de las Pitiusas probablemente no sospeche que está nadando en plástico, y es que por metro cuadrado hay 1000 minúsculas partículas plásticas en el agua que apenas son visibles a simple vista.

Estamos muy orgullosos de los sabrosos pescados, cangrejos, langostas y mejillones capturados localmente; pero todos sus cuerpos contienen plástico. Este triste hecho es prácticamente irreversible, deberíamos asegurarnos de que esta condición no empeore.

La organización internacional sin ánimo de lucro Oceanic Global Foundation, http://oceanic.global/, tuvo como objetivo llamar la atención sobre esta situación y aumentar la conciencia sobre este problema. Para ello, la ciudad de Ibiza fue elegida como sede del evento.

Sería un gran festival que atraería a muchos visitantes con eventos culturales, grandes instalaciones de arte y música, y charlas de biólogos marinos. Sin embargo, el Ayuntamiento lo rechazó por los falsos argumentos de que tal evento era sólo un pretexto para una mega fiesta. Al final, el festival tuvo lugar, en menor escala, en Atzaró.

Debemos hacerlo mejor que estos políticos y actuar en lugar de simplemente hablar. Hay que evitar el plástico siempre que sea posible, comenzando con las bolsas a la hora de ir a comprar. ¡Conservemos nuestro paraíso!

ie beiden Inseln Ibiza und Formentera sind vom Meer umgeben, einem Meer, das in Gefahr ist. Mit wunderschönen Buchten, traumhaften Stränden und kristallklarem Wasser zählen sie zu den beliebtesten Reisezielen weltweit.

In der Tourismuswerbung gar als letztes Paradies im Mittelmeer angepriesen. Aber dieses Paradies ist bedroht von einer unsichtbaren Krankheit: Mikroplastik. Wer in den scheinbar so traumhaften Fluten der Pityusen badet, ahnt wahrscheinlich nicht, dass er in Plastik schwimmt. Pro Quadratmeter treiben dort 1000 winzig kleine Plastikteilchen im Wasser die mit bloßem Auge kaum zu erkennen sind.

Wir sind so stolz auf die hier vor Ort gefangenen besonders schmackhaften Fische, Krebse, Langusten und Muscheln – aber alle haben sie bereits Plastik im Körper. Diese traurige Tatsache ist zwar praktisch nicht mehr rückgängig zu machen. Aber wir sollten dafür Sorge tragen, dass sich dieser Zustand nicht noch verschlimmert.

Die internationale Non-Profit Organisation Oceanic Global Foundation http://oceanic.global/ hatte es sich zum Ziel gesetzt auf diesen Zustand aufmerksam zu machen und das Bewusstsein für dieses Problem zu schärfen.

Dazu wurde Ibiza Stadt als Veranstaltungsort auserwählt. Es sollte ein großes Festival werden das viele Besucher anzieht mit kulturellen Veranstaltungen, großen Kunst-Installationen, Musik und Vorträgen von Meeresbiologen.

Doch das Rathaus lehnte dies ab mit der fadenscheinigen Begründung, so ein Event sei nur ein Vorwand für eine Mega-Party. Letztendlich fand das Festival dann in kleinerem Rahmen im Atzaró statt.

Wir sollten es besser machen als diese Politiker und handeln statt nur zu reden. Vermeiden sie wo immer möglich Plastik, das fängt bereits beim Einkauf an. Lassen Sie uns alle unser Paradies erhalten!

RACHEL PARSONS Combining motherhood with curating creativity at Atzaró, Rachel reminisces on her Ibiza journey.

017 is something of a milestone for Rachel Parsons, as she celebrates her 20th year of living, loving and working on the island. And, she tells me, it’s been an incredible journey, full of highs and lows.

Having never even visited the island before, she was inspired to make the move after a chance conversation with Sean Pertwee in London, who told her about the Morna Valley school, and his own experience of growing up on this carefree, bohemian island.

Searching for a fresh start after the sudden death of her best friend, she came to Ibiza seeking a better life for her two daughters, and the daughter of her friend, whom she adopted after she lost her mother. She recalls arriving, three daughters in tow, in the dark, and waking up the next morning in this blissful house on the top of the mountain, thinking she had found heaven.

Originally from Bristol, growing up listening to the Wild Bunch in the legendary Dug Out from the age of 13 , Rachel found herself immersed in the world of fashion from an early age, working in London alongside some of the industry’s most iconic and inspirational designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Bella Freud and Michael Kopelman of Gimme 5.

Ironically, she thought that when she decamped to this little island, she was leaving the fashion world behind her. She recalls that in her early years on the island, it was something of a struggle to make money, but determined to ensure her children were able to enjoy the carefree campo life and have a good education, she worked tirelessly in various roles.

However, the turning point for her career was meeting Victor Guasch, the owner of Atzaró, which at the time was enjoying its second year

Nunca antes había visitado la isla, pero sintió que debía mudarse tras una conversación por casualidad con Sean Pertwee en Londres, que le habló acerca del colegio Morna Valley, y su propia experiencia de crecer en esta despreocupada isla bohemia.

En búsqueda de un nuevo comienzo tras la repentina muerte de su mejor amiga, vino a Ibiza en busca de una vida mejor para sus dos hijas y la hija de su amiga, a la que adoptó después del fallecimiento. Recuerda su llegada, tres hijas a cuestas, oscuridad, y luego despertar a la mañana siguiente en esta casa maravillosa en la cima de la montaña, pensando que había encontrado el cielo.

Rachel, originalmente de Bristol, creció escuchando el Wild Bunch en el legendario Dug Out a partir de los 13 años, y se encontró inmersa en el mundo de la moda desde temprana edad, trabajando en Londres junto a algunos de los diseñadores más icónicos e inspiradores de la industria como Vivienne Westwood, Bella Freud y Michael Kopelman de Gimme 5.

Recuerda la lucha que pasó que en sus primeros años en la isla para ganar dinero, pero estaba decidida a que sus hijos disfrutaran de la vida campestre despreocupada y de tener una buena educación, a pesar de trabajar incansablemente en varios puestos.

Sin embargo, el punto de inflexión en su carrera fue conocer a Víctor Guasch, dueño de Atzaró, que en ese momento estaba disfrutando de su segundo año de éxito. Le dio la

Niemals hatte Rachel Ibiza besucht, bevor sie den Entschluss fasste, auf die Insel zu ziehen, es war die Konsequenz aus einem inspirierenden Gespräch mit Sean Pertwee in London, der ihr von seiner unbeschwerten Jugend an der Morna Valley School auf Ibiza erzählte.

Ein Neuanfang war genau das, was Rachel damals brauchte. Ihre beste Freundin war verstorben und es war eine Zeit voller Schmerz.

Mit ihren drei Töchtern (eine ist die adoptierte Tochter ihrer verstorbenen Freundin) brach sie nach Ibiza auf. Sie erinnert sich noch ganz genau daran, wie sie am ersten Morgen die Sonne über den Hügeln aufgehen sah und sich fühlte, als sei sie endlich im Paradies angekommen.

Ursprünglich stammt Rachel aus Bristol, sie wuchs mit der Musik des Kollektivs Wild Bunch auf und zog bereits mit 13 durch den legendären Dug Out Club. Neben der Musik war es die Mode, die sie inspirierte und so zog es sie früh nach London. Hier arbeitete sie für bekannte Designer wie Vivienne Westwood, Bella Freud und Michael Kopelmann von Gimme 5.

Ironie des Schicksals: Rachel glaubte fest daran, dass mit dem Umzug nach Ibiza auch ihre Karriere in der Modewelt enden würde.

Die ersten Jahre auf der Insel waren hart, sie hielt sich mit zahlreichen Jobs über Wasser, um so sicherzustellen, dass ihre Kinder das sorglose Leben auf dem Campo genießen konnten und eine gute Ausbildung erhielten.

Für einen Wendepunkt in ihrem Leben sorgte das Zusammentreffen mit Victor Guasch, dem Inhaber vom Atzaró, das zu diesem Zeitpunkt

of success. He gave her the opportunity of working with the English community on the island to create PR for Atzaró, and from here, a dream partnership was born.

Victor’s passion for culture and art, and his open minded attitude to combining the rustic tradition of the beautiful hotel with cutting edge fashion, art and music is what has allowed her to transform Atzaró into the hub of culture that we all recognise today.

A chance remark from Rachel to Victor that the gardens of Atzaró would be the perfect place to hold a fashion show led to his instant approval, handing Rachel full creative control, and so it became that she was once again drawn back into the heady world of fashion.

Her innate talent for bringing together and recognising the talents of both local and international designers has led to Atzaró being true pioneers of fashion in Ibiza, and enjoying 8 years of spectacular fashion shows.

A dedicated Nichrien Diashonin Buddhist, Rachel explains that chanting is an integral part of her life, and has helped her through the most difficult of times, including beating breast cancer with the care of Can Misses hospital, the daily ritual of chanting Nam-myoho-rengekyo allows her to be the very best person she can be. She chants to release any negative energy before stepping into the world each day, chanting to create value in Atzaró, for the staff’s happiness, taking responsibility for her own life.

So, as she enters her second decade on the island, what does the future hold for Rachel Parsons? She tells me that she is delighted that her three daughters are all flourishing in their lives, her joy at becoming a grandmother this year, and her anticipation and excitement at beginning the next chapter of her life, with great hopes and dreams for both herself and Atzaró. We are sure that Rachel’s future will be nothing but bright as her star continues to shine. n

La pasión de Victor por la cultura y el arte, y su actitud de mente abierta para combinar la tradición rústica del bello hotel con la moda, el arte y la música de vanguardia, es lo que le ha permitido transformar Atzaró en el centro de la cultura que todos conocemos hoy.

Un comentario casual de Rachel a Víctor de que los jardines de Atzaró serían el lugar perfecto para llevar a cabo un desfile de moda llevó a su aprobación instantánea, entregando a Rachel el control creativo completo, y así fue como volvió de nuevo al embriagador mundo de la moda. Su talento innato para reunir y reconocer el talento tanto de diseñadores locales como internacionales ha llevado a Atzaró a ser un verdadero pionero de la moda en Ibiza y a disfrutar de 8 años de espectaculares desfiles de moda.

Rachel schlug Victor damals vor, die Gärten als perfekte Kulisse für eine Modenschau zu nutzen und der Hotelchef gab ihr nicht nur sofort grünes Licht, sondern auch die volle kreative Verantwortung. Damit kehrte Rachel zurück in die Welt der Mode. Ihr angeborenes Talent, lokale und auch internationale Designer für ihr Projekt zu begeistern, machte das Atzaró zum Mode-Pionier auf Ibiza – seit 8 Jahren finden hier die wichtigsten Modenschauen der Insel statt.

Als engagierte Nichrien Daishonin Buddhistin ist das Singen integraler Bestandteil ihres Lebens und hat ihr durch schwierige Zeiten geholfen, so auch während ihres Kampfes gegen den Brustkrebs und der Zeit im Krankenhaus Can Misses. Das tägliche Ritual des Chantens von Nam-myoho-renge-kyo macht sie zu der besten Person die sie sein kann, so Rachel. So singt sie auch jeden Morgen ehe sie ins Atzaró fährt, um jegliche negative Energie vom Hotel fernzuhalten und für das Glück der Mitarbeiter, um ihnen zu helfen, die Verantwortung für ihre Leben zu übernehmen.

Nun, da sie ihre zweite Dekade auf Ibiza vollendet, was hält die Zukunft bereit für Rachel Parsons? Sie erzählt mir, dass sie sich in erster Linie darauf freut, ihre drei Töchter in ihrer Lebensblüte zu sehen, dieses Jahr das erste Mal Großmutter zu werden und dass sie voller Freude jedes neue Kapitel ihres Lebens begrüßt.

Für sich und das Atzaró gehen ihr die Träume und hoffnungsvollen Pläne nicht aus und wir sind uns sicher, dass der hellglänzende Stern Rachels weiter strahlen wird. n

SIMEON FRIEND After all he managed to find time in his manic midsummer schedule to meet up with Ibiza Style and share his thoughts on Ibiza past and present.

aving first come here on a lad’s holiday in 1989, it was work that brought him back to the island at the end of the 90s. At that time, he was travelling the world putting on music events featuring artists like Underground and Prodigy for different international brands including Kahlua and Ballantine’s. Meanwhile, when he was back home in south London, with its fractious soul scene, he used to deejay. The effect of fin-de-siècle Ibiza’s heady vibes was instant and life-changing: “I remember going to Amnesia and seeing everybody hugging each other and crying, with Hill Street Blues playing at the end of the night. And I thought, I don‘t know what‘s going on here but I need to find out.”

Once the bug had bitten him, it was a question of applying his experience as an events organiser to making a living on the island. He realised very quickly that there were no global events in Ibiza. With the exception of MTV.The very year he was scouting around for work as a promoter its licence was revoked, sending out

Se dio cuenta rápidamente de que no había eventos globales en Ibiza, con la excepción de MTV. El mismo año que estaba buscando para poder trabajar como promotor, la licencia fue revocada, lo que creó una muy mala señal en

Zur gleichen Zeit versuchte seine Soulseele sich in seiner Heimat Südlondon als Deejay auszuleben. Ein Jahrtausend ging zu Ende und Simeon war geradezu berauscht von den Vibes auf Ibiza. „Ich weiß noch genau, wie ich im Amnesia stand und Menschen sah, die sich umarmten, weinten und dazu lief die Musik von Hill Street Blues. Ich verstand nicht, was da passierte, aber musste es unbedingt herausfinden“.

Einmal vom Ibiza Flair verzaubert, war es nur noch eine Frage der Zeit, bis er nicht nur beruflich auf Ibiza die ersten Schritte unternahm, sondern auch seinen Wohnsitz hierhin verlegte. Er erkannte schnell, dass es keine globalen Events auf Ibiza gab (mit Ausnahme von

a very bad signal to all the international companies wanting to stage an event here. So it was no surprise then that it took quite a few years and a lot of convincing before he got his first decent client, Red Bull, to venture back onto the white island. After that, its doors slowly opened.

17 years later, going to work on the Tube is history. Simeon admits his good fortune in that his job enables him to work with the same clients and the same crazy parties anywhere on the planet. Nonetheless, it is a long season and he isn’t able to truly relax until November, which is after the company holds its last event, Halloween. Focusing on his children, who go to school here, and short snowboarding trips, city breaks and stints in Asia fill out his downtime over the winter. In his mind, there is no doubt that Ibiza is now his home. There’s just too much that’s right about the island’s lifestyle for him to imagine returning to the big city any time soon. Despite the difficulties, life in Ibiza in 2017 is better in many ways: more professional, more business-like, with many more nice restaurants and better utilities. As Simeon well recalls, “When we first got internet, Telefonica put something like a traffic light on the wall, with three lights, and when it went amber, you had to get ready and you could use it. It was mental!”

So how does a veteran clubber manage to juggle family life and hectic work engagements amid all the insanity of the high season in Ibiza? “I‘m not sure I‘ve ever escaped the madness of the summer to be honest. I love hectic; I live on adrenaline. So actually, the lifestyle suits me perfectly.” n

Simeon admite su buena fortuna pues su trabajo le permite trabajar con los mismos clientes y las mismas fiestas locas en cualquier parte del planeta. Sin embargo, es una temporada larga y no es capaz de relajarse verdaderamente hasta noviembre, después de celebrar el último evento de la empresa, Halloween. Durante el invierno se centra en sus hijos, que van al colegio aquí, y en los viajes cortos de snowboard, las escapadas urbanas y los períodos en Asia. En su mente, no hay duda de que Ibiza es ahora su hogar. Hay demasiadas cosas sobre el estilo de vida de la isla como para imaginarse una vuelta a la gran ciudad en cualquier momento pronto. A pesar de las dificultades, la vida en Ibiza en 2017 es mejor en muchos sentidos: más profesional, más empresarial, con muchos restaurantes más agradables y mejores servicios públicos. Como bien recuerda Simeon, “Cuando tuvimos Internet por primera vez, Telefónica puso algo así como un semáforo en la pared, con tres luces, y cuando se ponía de color ámbar, tenías que prepararte y ya podías usarlo. ¡Era una locura!”

Entonces, ¿cómo un veterano de los clubs consigue hacer malabares entre la vida familiar y los compromisos de trabajo en medio de toda la locura de la temporada alta en Ibiza?

“No estoy seguro de haber escapado de la locura del verano, para ser honesto. Me encanta el caos; vivo con adrenalina. Así que en realidad, me adapto a este estilo de vida perfectamente”. n

Kein Wunder, dass internationale Firmen zunächst zurückhaltend auf Ibiza reagierten. Es sollte Jahre dauern, bis er den Ruf festigen konnte und mit Red Bull sich die erste Größe nach Ibiza wagte.

Danach ging es aufwärts.

17 Jahre später gehören diese Anfangsschwierigkeiten der Vergangenheit an. Simeon geht nach wie vor in seinem turbulenten Job auf: Er liebt seine Kunden und die verrückten Partys, die er auf der ganzen Welt organisiert.

Nichtsdestotrotz: Die Saison ist lang und hart und erst im November kehrt etwas Ruhe ein, Halloween ist immer die letzte große Party, danach heißt es durchschnaufen. Zeit für die Kinder, etwas Snowboard fahren, ein paar Städtetrips und Reisen nach Asien – das ist die Winterzeit für Simeon. Er ist angekommen auf Ibiza, es ist seine Heimat geworden und sein Leben. Trotz mancher Schwierigkeiten ist es für ihn 2017 in vielerlei Hinsicht besser: Die Insel ist professioneller und businessorientierter geworden, es gibt wunderbare Restaurants und viele gute Dienstleister. „Als wir damals Internet bekamen, stellte Telefonica so eine Art Ampel auf mit drei Farben, und nur wenn es Orange leuchtete, konntest du das Internet nutzen und musstest dich beeilen: es war crazy!“ Jetzt haben wir Hochsaison, jede Nacht ist ein Arbeitstag für Simeon. Wie gelingt es dem Club-Veteranen Familie und seinen stressigen Job unter einen Hut zu bekommen? „Ich bin nicht sicher, ob ich überhaupt jemals versucht habe, diesem Wahnsinn zu entkommen. Ich liebe diese Hektik, ich lebe täglich auf Adrenalin. Mein Lebensstil passt perfekt zu mir“ n

From his office, decorated with motivational slogans, works of art and photos of his wife and his three daughters, Marc Rahola Matutes embodies the spirit that inspires his company, with projects based on concepts that have been developed with exquisite meticulousness. “We do things in much more detail while keeping the reasons why in mind much more than people could imagine. We are aware that there is always an idea behind everything that we do”.

It was precisely this different way of regarding tourism, in addition to his desire to prove himself, that made this nephew of Abel Matutes decide to leave a prosperous career in Grupo Palladium to create Ocean Group, a successful holding company that brings together hotels, real estate projects and even an unusual project to produce almonds in Lerida.

Everything started with the acquisition of Ocean Drive hotel in 2009. “When we started out, as tends to happen to all companies, we did not really know what we wanted to do and you begin defining what you do not want to do”. Their first establishment served to give the group its name thanks to the fascinating narrative that lay behind its name. Ocean, “the river that encircled the world”, was the Greek Titan who ruled the seas beyond the Aegean, where Atlantis was located.

Since then, Ocean Group has undertaken various real estate developments in places such as Cala Comte, Can Misses, Playa d’en Bossa, S’Olivera, Palma and Baqueira, several other Ocean Drive hotels in Talamanca, Port Portals (Mallorca) and Barcelona, the agro-tourism hotel Can Jaume in Ibiza, a future project in Saint Tropez, three Ryans hotels (Ibiza) and an

Desde su despacho decorado con frases motivadoras, obras de arte y las fotos de su mujer y sus tres hijas, Marc Rahola Matutes encarna el espíritu que inspira a su empresa, con proyectos basados en conceptos desarrollados con una meticulosidad exquisita: “Trabajamos mucho más al detalle las cosas y teniendo en cuenta los porqués de lo que la gente se puede llegar a imaginar. Nuestra sensibilidad es que todo lo que hacemos tenga siempre una idea detrás”.

Precisamente fue una forma diferente de concebir el turismo, además del afán de probarse a sí mismo, lo que hizo que este sobrino de Abel Matutes decidiera dejar una próspera carrera en el Grupo Palladium y crear Ocean Group, un exitoso holding que aglutina hoteles, promociones inmobiliarias e incluso un curioso proyecto de producción de almendras en Lleida.

Todo empezó con la adquisición en 2009 del hotel Ocean Drive. “Cuando empezamos, como pasa con casi todas las empresas, no sabíamos muy bien lo que queríamos hacer, empiezas definiendo lo que no quieres hacer”. Este primer establecimiento sirvió para designar al grupo por la fascinante narrativa que ocultaba su nombre. Océano, “el río que circunda el mundo”, era el titán griego que dominaba los mares más allá del Egeo, donde se encontraba Atlantis.

Desde entonces, Ocean Group ha realizado diversas promociones inmobiliarias en lugares como Cala Comte, Can Misses, Playa d’en Bossa, S’Olivera, Palma o Baqueira, otros tantos hoteles Ocean Drive en Talamanca, Port Portals (Mallorca) y Barcelona, el agroturismo Can Jaume (Ibiza), un futuro proyecto en Saint Tropez, tres

Sein Büro, das mit Kunstwerken, Motivationsslogans und Fotos seiner Familie geschmückt ist, ist nicht nur Ideenwerkstatt, sondern verkörpert auch den Geist von Marc Rahola Matutes, der mit seiner Firma Projekte auf die Beine stellt, die nicht nur ihrer Zeit voraus sind, sondern auch auf Konzepten beruhen, die mit exquisiter Genauigkeit generiert wurden. „Wir entwickeln mit einer Akribie und einer Detailverliebtheit, die sich die meisten gar nicht vorstellen können. Hinter jedem Schritt, den wir tun, steht eine Idee, der wir folgen.“ Es war dieser genaue Blick auf den Tourismus und sein Wunsch nach Selbstverwirklichung, die den Neffen von Abel Matutes dazu bewogen haben, seine gutsituierte Position in der Palladium Gruppe aufzugeben und mit Ocean durchzustarten, einer erfolgreichen Holdinggesellschaft, die Hotels und Immobilien kauft und auch ungewöhnliche Ideen, wie den Mandelanbau in Lerida, fördert.

Alles begann mit der Übernahme des Ocean Drive Hotels 2009. „Als wir mit der Firma starteten, wussten wir noch nicht ganz genau, wohin wir wollten, haben aber als erstes definiert, was wir nicht wollten“. Die erste Amtshandlung war die Namensgebung und die Offenbarung der faszinierenden Geschichte dahinter: Ozean „der Fluss, der die Welt umkreiste“: Ein griechischer Titan, der die Meere jenseits der Ägäis regiert, dort, wo wild der Atlantik brandet.

Seitdem hat die Ocean Group viel bewegt: Immobilienprojekte in Cala Comte, Can Misses, Playa d’en Bossa, S’Olivera, Palma und Baqueira.

OD Miami that will open in 2019. This last hotel is situated in a building that dates back to 1926.

It has an unusual history since it was hit by a hurricane shortly after it opened, and during the crash of ’29, the bank that kept it sold its iron beams, thus lowering it to seven floors.

With this project, OD is now recovering the original 17-storey building and the facade, which has great historical value. What is more, they will conserve one chamber of the bank where it is said that Al Capone kept some of his money. Once again, a project beneath which beats a fascinating narrative which gives it a very special value in a city with a relatively short history.

He speaks to us about the current situation of tourism. “The crisis has brought about enormous changes in the tourism sector; each area has specialised in the things that suit it most.

Nowadays, more people come to Ibiza, but they stay for less time because they want to go to other places.” And he goes further with regard to the much-touted “Airbnb effect”, which he considers to be the ‘Napster’ of tourism: “It is not that I am in favour or against it, but it is a reality that has changed the system. Today, companies either adapt rapidly or they are condemned”. Another of the keys to the philosophy of the OD Group is precisely that horizontality and adaptability that, for Marc Rahola Matutes, are crucial at a moment like now, “We make a set of dynamic products. With globalisation, changes are dizzying and you have to equip teams with ways of working that are very permeable and horizontal”. And he goes still further, “The product is the team. OD’s philosophy is based on having enormous permeability to changes so that our team has the ability to absorb them, the talent to interpret them and the capacity to rewrite them. We are constantly

Este último hotel se ubica en un edificio de 1926 con una peculiar historia, ya que sufrió un huracán poco después de su inauguración, y durante la crisis del 29 el banco que se lo quedó vendió sus vigas de hierro bajándolo a siete plantas. Ahora con este proyecto OD recupera el edificio original de 17 plantas y la fachada, de gran valor histórico. Además, conservarán una cámara del banco en la que se cuenta que Al Capone tenía parte de su dinero.

De nuevo, un proyecto bajo el que late una narración llena de interés y que le confiere un valor muy especial en una ciudad con una historia relativamente corta.

Nos habla sobre la situación actual del turismo. “La crisis ha provocado enormes cambios en el sector turístico, cada zona se ha especializado en las cosas que le son más propias. Hoy día viene más gente a Ibiza pero se queda menos tiempo, porque quiere ir a más sitios.” Y ahonda respecto al tan cacareado “efecto Airbnb” que considera el ‘Napster’ del turismo: “No es que esté a favor ni en contra, pero es una realidad que ha cambiado el sistema. Hoy día, o las empresas se adaptan rápido o están condenadas”. Otra de las claves en la filosofía de OD Group es precisamente esa horizontalidad y adaptabilidad que para Marc Rahola Matutes son cruciales en un momento como el actual: “Nosotros hacemos un set de productos dinámicos, con la globalización los cambios son vertiginosos y hay que dotar a los equipos de formas de trabajo muy permeables y horizontales”. Y afina aún más: “El producto es el equipo. La filosofía de OD se basa en tener una permeabilidad enorme en los cambios, que nuestro equipo tenga la capacidad de absorberlos, el talento de interpretarlos y la capacidad de reescribirlos. Constantemente estamos

Es residiert in einem Gebäude von 1926, das kurz nach der Eröffnung von einem Hurrikan getroffen wurde, zudem verkaufte der Eigentümer, eine Bank, in der Finanzkrise von 1929 fast alle Eisenstreben und senkte es damit auf sieben Etagen ab. Für die Eröffnung soll das historische Gebäude, das vormals 17 Stockwerke und eine aufwendige Fassade aufwies, fast vollständig in den Originalzustand zurückversetzt werden. Als besonderes Highlight wird ein Tresorraum, in dem Al Capone einen Großteil seines Geldes aufbewahrt haben soll, in den Mittelpunkt gestellt.

Erneut ein Projekt voller Visionen.

Auch die aktuelle Situation des Tourismus betrachtet Matutes sehr genau: „Die Krise hat zu enormen Veränderungen im Tourismussektor geführt, jeder Bereich hat sich auf seine Stärken verlegt. Es kommen immer mehr Menschen nach Ibiza, aber sie bleiben nicht mehr so lange, da sie auch andere Orte bereisen möchten“. Den viel diskutierten „Airbnb-Effekt“ vergleicht er mit Napster. „Ich bin nicht dafür oder dagegen, es ist einfach ein Fakt, der das System verändert hat. Entweder die Unternehmen passen sich den neuen Trends an oder sie verlieren“. Genau das ist ein Schlüssel des Erfolgs der OD Group: Sie arbeitet zukunftsweisend und ist anpassungsfähig. Für Marc Rahola Matutes kann ein einziger Moment entscheidend sein. „Wir entwickeln eine Reihe dynamischer Projekte. Mit der Globalisierung nehmen Veränderungen schwindelerregende Wendungen und du musst dein Team mit passendem Rüstzeug ausstatten.“ Und er geht noch weiter. „Das Produkt ist das Team. Die Philosophie von OD beruht auf enormer Transparenz und Durchlässigkeit von Ideen. Das Team nutzt sein

evolving, and making errors and failing are part of this process: they are a way of improving”.

Assuming that mistakes will be made as a vital part of the process contrasts with the impression that Rahola Matutes turns everything he touches into gold. That is what happened with one of his most talked about projects, a plan to grow almonds by irrigation system that was suggested to him five years ago. When rain fed, between 80 and 90 kg of shelled almonds can be produced per hectare, whereas using irrigation can produce up to 2,500 kg, with practically no loss of quality or flavour. Spain is the third biggest almond-producing country in the world and it’s a product of great interest since all of it can be used with a very wide range of applications. In the time since they began with 18 hectares to the present day, when they possess 1000 and are closing in on another 500, they are about to become one of the main producers in Spain and thus in the whole of Europe.

And that’s with a project he embraced in an almost purely romantic way…

Unlike the Ocean Drive hotels, the Ryans chain, which has three establishments in Ibiza, is based on an idea of tourism that is inclusive and accessible to anyone, taking its inspiration in the notion of the Irish pub as social centre or meeting point, a bit like a tavern in the Far West. Following this model, at Ryans La Marina hotel, for example, the pub’s bar itself is the reception, creating an interesting mix between guests and people who can simply go in to have a drink. The pubs, what is more, have spread to every corner of the world, and they have also matched two other absolutely global concepts: beer and sports. In order to be able to develop the idea from scratch, Marc openedalong with two Irish expats-a chain of pubs in

adaptándonos, y el error y el fracaso son parte de este proceso, son un medio de mejora”.

Esta asunción del error como parte crucial del proceso contrasta con la impresión de que Rahola Matutes convierte en oro todo lo que toca. Así ocurrió con uno de sus proyectos más comentados, un plan para cultivar almendra con sistema de regadío que le propusieron hace 5 años. En secano se producen entre 80 y 90 kg de almendra pelada por hectárea, mientras que con regadío se alcanzan los 2.500 kg, prácticamente sin pérdida de calidad ni sabor.

España es el tercer país productor del mundo de almendra, un producto muy interesante por cuanto se aprovecha todo y tiene aplicaciones muy diversas. Desde que empezaron con 18 hectáreas hasta ahora que cuentan con 1000 y están cerrando otras 500, están a punto de convertirse en los principales productores de España y por tanto de toda Europa. Y esto con un proyecto que abrazó de manera casi puramente romántica…

A diferencia de los hoteles Ocean Drive, la cadena Ryans, que cuenta con tres establecimientos en Ibiza, se basa en una idea de turismo inclusivo y accesible a cualquiera, inspirándose en el concepto de pub irlandés como centro social o punto de encuentro, un poco al estilo de la posada del Far West. Siguiendo ese modelo, en el hotel Ryans La Marina, por ejemplo, la propia barra del bar es la recepción, lo que crea una interesante mezcla entre huéspedes y personas que simplemente puedan entrar a tomar algo. Los pubs están además extendidos por cada rincón del mundo, y llevan aparejados otros dos conceptos absolutamente globales: la cerveza y los deportes. Nehmen wir sein meistdiskutiertes Projekt: Die Mandelproduktion, angeschlossen an ein Bewässerungssystem. Bereits seit 5 Jahren forciert er dieses Unterfangen und es überzeugt mit harten Fakten. Nur über den Regen bewässert, werden bis zu 80 oder 90 kg geschälte Mandeln pro Hektar produziert, während die Bewässerung für bis zu 2500 kg Mandeln pro Hektar sorgt, praktisch ohne Qualitäts- und Geschmacksverlust. Spanien gehört zu dem drittgrößten Produzenten von Mandeln weltweit und es ist ein Produkt, das auf großes Interesse stößt, da es so vielfältig eingesetzt und verarbeitet werden kann. Mit 18 Hektar gestartet, umfasst der Anbau heute 1000 Hektar (weitere 500 Hektar sind in Planung), gehört damit zu den größten Produzenten in Spanien und damit weltweit. Und wir sprechen hier von einem Projekt, das zunächst nur ein romantischer Gedanke Matutes war.

Anders als die Ocean Drive Hotels spricht die Ryans Kette, die inzwischen 3 Häuser auf Ibiza hat, ein Konzept an, das integrativ und für jedermann zugänglich ist. Als Inspirationsquelle diente hier die irische Kneipe als Mittelpunkt des sozialen Miteinanders oder auch die Taverne im Wilden Westen. Dieser Idee folgend ist die Rezeption des Ryans La Marina gleichzeitig die Bar des Hotels – ein kommunikativer Ort, an dem Hotelgäste auf Barbesucher treffen und sich locker unterhalten können. Die Idee des Pubs ist deshalb interessant, da sie zwei sehr populäre Dinge vereint: Bier und Sport –

Barcelona: “When I felt that we had already gained enough experience, I got out of the bars in Barcelona, I kept the brand and created the first Ryans hotels.”

Taking care of the fine details in what he does is something that is equally reflected in the group’s real estate developments, which have a concierge service that enables them to solve the problems or bureaucratic steps that clients may encounter without them even having to journey to the island.

When it comes to what drives his restless, persevering, painstaking personality, he points out the enormous influence of his father, an architect and professor, and his mother, a decorator. Marc Rahola Matutes is convinced that life is lived once and that you have to take advantage of it, making mistakes as many times as is necessary, and understanding that, “When you have taken a decision, it is your mistake and what counts is your ability to get up again. You cannot draw up a draft of your life”. That determination is probably the secret of his great success as an entrepreneur: “I prefer to feel sorry for having done something than for not having done it. I like getting out of my comfort zone; it’s the need to express myself”. n

Sobre los motivos de su personalidad inquieta, perseverante y meticulosa señala la enorme influencia de su padre, arquitecto y profesor, y su madre, decoradora. Ambos han colaborado en muchos proyectos de Ocean Group desde sus respectivas especialidades, así como su hermana artista, que estudió arquitectura y ahora cursa una beca de dos años en una de las mejores universidades del mundo.

Marc Rahola Matutes está convencido de que la vida se vive una vez y hay que aprovecharla, equivocándose las veces que haga falta, y entendiendo que “cuando has tomado una decisión es tu error y tu capacidad de levantarte lo que cuenta. No puedes escribir un borrador de tu vida”. Probablemente esa determinación sea el secreto de su gran éxito como empresario: “Prefiero arrepentirme de haber hecho algo que de no haberlo hecho. Yo soy de salir de mi zona de confort, es una necesidad de expresión”. n

Wenn Matutes auf seine ruhelose, beharrliche und unermüdliche Persönlichkeit angesprochen wird, dann verweist er gerne auf den Einfluss seines Vaters, der als Architekt und Professor erfolgreich ist und auf seine Mutter, eine erfolgreiche Dekorateurin. Beide waren an zahlreichen Projekten der Ocean Group beteiligt und haben ihre Fähigkeiten eingebracht, genauso wie seine Schwester, einer Künstlerin, die Architektur studiert und derzeit einem zweijähriges Stipendium an einer der besten Universitäten der Welt folgt.

Matutes ist überzeugt davon, dass das Leben gelebt werden will und dass man ruhig Fehler machen kann, so lange, bis man sie versteht. „Wenn du eine Entscheidung getroffen hast, musst du damit leben, auch wenn es ein Fehler ist. Was zählt, ist deine Fähigkeit, wieder aufzustehen. Du kannst keinem festen Lebensplan folgen“. Es ist diese Entschlossenheit, die ihn zu so einem erfolgreichen Unternehmer macht. „Ich mache lieber etwas Falsches, als dass ich gar nichts getan habe. Ich mag es, aus meiner Komfortzone herauszukommen, es gehört zu meiner Persönlichkeit, mich auf diese Art auszudrücken.“ n

biza Style recently enjoyed collaboration in the idyllic setting of the rooftop of the ME Ibiza Hotel where we were seduced and enthralled by a bespoke menu of carefully curated culinary offerings from the Anonymous Chef.

Speaking to the man himself at a later date, we discover more about the driving force behind his pioneering attitude to organic, vegetarian food, using natural, pure ingredients and his mission to educate others to make this an accessible, integral part of daily life.

He has spent much time questioning the effect of what we eat has on our bodies, saying that he looks at food as a medicine, exploring the way it can enhance the serotonin levels in our mind, those which make us happy, using the dopamine which is synthesized in plants.

He emphatically believes that eating organically is a way of life to be embraced for the benefit of your body and mind.

After enjoying a career, which took him all over the world, he came to Ibiza to spend time with a close friend, and, having previously enjoyed the island’s party scene, he arrived this time with a different outlook. After experiencing some difficult personal battles, he felt the energy of the island lift his spirits in a different way to before, meeting creative, likeminded people, and finding a sense of peace in the anonymity of living on this island, far away from the celebrity of his previous lifestyle.

Tras hablar con él, descubrimos más sobre la fuerza motriz detrás de su actitud pionera en la comida orgánica y vegetariana, donde utiliza ingredientes naturales y puros, y su misión de educar a otros para hacer de esto una parte accesible e integral de la vida cotidiana.

Ha pasado mucho tiempo cuestionando el efecto que tiene lo que comemos en nuestros cuerpos, mirando a la comida como una medicina, explorando la forma en que pueden mejorar los niveles de serotonina en nuestra mente, lo que nos hace felices, y utilizando la dopamina, que se sintetiza en plantas. Verdaderamente cree que comer orgánicamente es una forma de vida que hay que abrazar para el beneficio de nuestro cuerpo y mente.

Después de disfrutar de una carrera que lo llevó por todo el mundo, llegó a Ibiza para pasar tiempo con un amigo cercano, y, después de haber disfrutado de las fiestas de la isla, volvió con una perspectiva diferente. Zu späterer Gelegenheit sprechen wir mit dem „Mann hinter der Maske“ und lernen einen Chefkoch kennen mit bahnbrechender Attitüde zu biologischer und vegetarischer Küche, einer der auf natürliche Ingredienzien setzt.

Er hat viel Zeit damit verbracht zu untersuchen, welche Auswirkung Nahrung auf unseren Körper hat. In seinen Augen ist Essen eine natürliche Medizin, so kann z.B. der Serotoninspiegel über natürliches Dopamin aus Pflanzen beeinflusst werden. Der Starkoch glaubt fest daran, dass eine natürliche, biologische Ernährung Körper und Geist in Einklang bringt.

Seine Karriere führte ihn in die besten Restaurants und um die halbe Welt. Während dieser Zeit verbrachte er auch einige Zeit mit einem engen Freund auf Ibiza und genoss das wilde Partyleben. Doch dann entdeckte er die ganz andere Seite der Insel. In einer persönlich sehr schwierigen Lebensphase spürte er auf einmal die besondere Energie Ibizas, kreative und positive Menschen traten in sein Leben und in der Anonymität der Insel fand er einen inspirierenden Frieden, weit weg von seinem bisherigen prominenten Lebensstil.

Water, as well as food is, he says, is an often overlooked yet essential factor in our wellbeing, our bodies need a sufficient amount of water, along with natural, pure food in order to be at our physical peak.

The moniker, ‘The Anonymous Chef’ is his way of avoiding the status which comes with an internationally recognised name, allowing him the freedom to focus on his food, real food, from which people experience true emotions, so much more than simply looking and tasting good, this is food which comes directly from his heart, nothing to do with a name, an ego, an image.

meals for some of the world’s most recognisable names from the world of music, movies and business, he himself steers well away from the celebrity, VIP lifestyle, and indeed we meet a venue of his choice, Soulgood, a relatively unknown yet charming chiringuito just outside of Santa Eulalia, where the owner and staff share his attitude to creating excellent, innovative food and drink, served in a welcoming, unpretentious manner.

Having made the island his permanent home, he talks of his plans for the future here, including introducing an affordable, accessible culinary school during the winter months, offering people from the island the chance to learn and immerse themselves in changing their way of eating, the way they look at food, and helping them understand that it can be possible to eat cleanly and healthily, in an affordable way.

He is also keen to forge relationships with local organic farmers, and encourage the growth of the organic culture here, he feels that with so many creative, innovatory people on the island, people who think outside of the box, connecting these people, can make everything fall into place. His opinion is that big changes can happen with the right attitude and support from the government to bring people together, forging a community from which many people can benefit.

His aim is to make positive changes to convince people how food is truly a medicine, a source of life. The Anonymous Chef emanates power, energy, positivity and passion, fire and we have little doubt that this driving force will achieve anything he sets his mind to. n

Des Weiteren forciert er die Beziehungen zu den lokalen Biobauern und möchte damit die hiesige organische Kultur stärken und weiter ausbauen. Er spürt, dass immer mehr Menschen seine Ideen teilen, aber auch eigene kreative und innovative Projekte haben, die er miteinander verknüpfen möchte. Seiner Meinung nach kann diese großartige Gemeinschaft mit Unterstützung der Regierung eine positive Wandlung mit sich bringen, von der alle profitieren.

No doubt you have passed in front of it lots of times but perhaps, if someone “in the know” has not taken you, you have not stopped to eat there because La Taverna is not an establishment that draws particular attention owing to its location right on the San José Road. Nonetheless, the powerful duo made up of Dolly and Tommy-its owners-have managed to create-in spite of the venue’s limitations-a restaurant that is full of charm with all the flavour of traditional Italian trattorias where it is possible to enjoy the highest quality Italian-based Mediterranean gastronomy with international touches at absolutely unmatchable prices. Tommy and Dolly are a couple and, ever since they opened La Taverna four seasons ago, each one of them takes care of one aspect of the restaurant in a masterful way. He does not follow recipes but rather always changes something about his dishes, which is why many customers come every day to savour the incredible homemade menus for just €11: “I have many customers who are already friends; they spend half their pay check here”, says Dolly, laughing.

A restless autodidact, it is hard to believe that Tommy, even though he has plenty of experience working in the galleys of well-known restaurants such as Pacha, Sacca or la Trattoria del Mar, has not studied at any cooking school.

When asked whether, in light of their success, they have considered changing to another, bigger place or somewhere better, they reply that they prefer to continue as they have done up till now, operating on a word of mouth basis and managing this little establishment without all the complications of personnel and the expenses that a larger venue could entail. As it happens, they stopped making pizzas and homemade bread because of the difficulty of finding somebody who could manage it at the level of quality they demand in everything they do.

If you drop in to enjoy the pleasant experience of eating at La Taverna, do not miss the chance to sample dishes such as their incredible ceviche, made in a very special way with tiny dried Sicilian tomatoes prepared by Tommy’s mother, a Parmigiana that Dolly says delights even those who are not fans of aubergines, traditional Sicilian arancini, or the dishes created with fresh truffles brought from Italy, Tommy’s culinary passion which he presents in exquisite preparations including tortellini, fettuccini and scrambled eggs.

Eine Vergrößerung wünschen sie nicht, die Kosten für Personal und Miete würden steigen und niemals, oder nur selten, fände man Mitarbeiter, die genauso viel Herzblut in Küche und Service stecken, wie die beiden es tun. So ist es auch bei Pizzen und Brot, ein komplizierter Vorgang, schwer jemanden zu finden, der das gleiche Niveau abliefert.

Wenn Sie La Taverna besuchen, dann sollten Sie auf jeden Fall das unglaubliche Ceviche probieren, das mit getrockneten sizilianischen Tomaten von Tommys Großmutter verfeinert wird. Dolly empfiehlt auch die Parmigiana und schwört, damit auch Gäste zu verführen, die sonst keine Auberginen mögen, und die würzigen Arancini aus Sizilien. Tommys Trüffelgerichte sind bereits legendär, kombiniert mit hausgemachter Pasta wie Tortellini oder Fettuccini und über seinen cremigen Rühreiern sind die schwarzen und weißen Knollen aus Italien sein besonderer Favorit.

Gray and Mandy, the team enjoyed, on top of the dishes already mentioned, a flavoursome provolone, a fresh salad made with exquisite Italian burrata, a dish of fregola (typical pasta from Sardinia) with seafood and some original gnocchi with apple and speck, culminating in the chance to sample the restaurant’s incredible homemade desserts, some of them prepared by Tommy’s mother such as the indispensable Sicilian cannolo with ricotta or the chocolate salami. A magical night came to an end with some fabulous premium gin and tonics.

think we all know what a flashback is: a device in literature or film that brings up a scene from the past that breaks with the sequence of time. Nonetheless, we do not understand very well what time itself is: that unknown concept with which we are condemned to struggle throughout life in an absurd race about which the only thing we know is that we are going to lose. Time is subjective and not remotely linear: there are stages in life when time stops and stands still and just goes on without anything happening. On the other hand, there are periods in our lives when it seems that we are experiencing an entire lifetime. Those intense years when it seems impossible to get over the highs and lows, years in which it’s hope that gets you up each morning and not the alarm clock (almost always), the years you store up in your memory as the important ones, the ones that make it seem that life is worth it because, when you look back relishing every one of the memories, the moments and the battles, taking great pleasure in each flashback, then, YOU KNOW YOU’RE HAPPY. Because there’s nothing better than looking back and feeling love for the road taken.

reo que todos sabemos lo que es un flashback, esa herramienta literaria o cinematográfica que trae una escena del pasado rompiendo la secuencia temporal, pero in embargo no entendemos muy bien lo que es el tiempo en sí mismo; ese concepto desconocido con el que estamos condenados a pelear durante toda la vida, en una carrera absurda de la que lo único que sabemos es que la vamos a perder. El tiempo es subjetivo, y nada lineal: hay etapas en la vida en las que el tiempo se para y se estanca y pasa sin más, sin que pase nada. En cambio hay épocas en la vida en las que parece que estemos viviendo una vida entera. Son esos años intensos, en los que los altos y bajos parecen imposibles de cruzar, años en los que cada mañana te levanta la ilusión, y no el despertador (casi siempre), los años que atesoras en la memoria como importantes, esos los que hacen que una vida valga la pena, porque cuando miras atrás saboreando cada uno de los recuerdos, de los momentos, de las batallas, con total regodeo en cada flashback, entonces TE SABES feliz. Porque no hay nada mejor que mirar atrás y sentir amor por el camino andado.

hree years ago we started to import sake here at Vino&Co, since the ones that already were on the island were of debatable quality, to be served hot (nice in the summer heat), easily comparable to gluhwein. Sake is more complex than wine; you can use over 400 descriptions to describe sensations whereas in wine you use about half.

In recent years, a Japanese breeze was overtaking the island and sushi restaurants were popping up like shiitake. This Japanese breeze hasn’t faded; to the contrary, it’s actually taken on strength to form a proper storm, code red!

The level of the Japanese and Nikkei restaurants is rising fast on the island, which encouraged us to expand our collection, since products such as ginger, wasabi and soy overtake the palate and thus kill the wine. Tea and water are great pairings, but they’re often skipped quickly for the simple reason of not containing any alcohol.

Our friends from restaurant Nagai introduced us to a delegation of craft sake brewers, a meeting that would change my life.

Fast forward to the next winter, and my father Jeroen and I, with whom I run the company, found ourselves on a plane to Japan to visit the breweries and acquire more knowledge about sake and the production process from rice grain to premium product. On day 3, after a day of travelling through mountains of

ace tres años empezamos a importar sake aquí en Vino&Co, ya que los que ya había en la isla eran de calidad discutible, para servirse calientes (agradable en el calor del verano), y fácilmente comparables a Glühwein. El sake es más complejo que el vino, pueden usarse unas 400 descripciones para describir sus sensaciones mientras que en el vino se usan alrededor de la mitad.

En los últimos años ha ido llegando una brisa japonesa a la isla y han empezado a aparecer restaurantes de sushi tan rápido como los shiitake. Esta brisa japonesa no se ha desvanecido, al contrario, están tomando fuerza para formar una buena tormenta: ¡código rojo! El nivel de los restaurantes japoneses y los nikkei está aumentando rápidamente en la isla, lo que nos animó a ampliar nuestra colección, ya que los productos como el jengibre, el wasabi y la soja tienen un sabor fuerte y por lo tanto matan el vino. El té y el agua son unas grandes parejas en la comida, pero a menudo se pasan por alto rápidamente por la sencilla razón de no contener alcohol.

Nuestros amigos del restaurante Nagai nos presentaron a una delegación de fabricantes de cerveza sake artesanal, una reunión que cambiaría mi vida.

or drei Jahren haben wir begonnen, hier bei Vino & Co Sake zu importieren, da die Klasse der verfügbaren Reisweine auf Ibiza, nun, sagen wir einmal, von umstrittener Qualität waren (ähnlich wie beim Glühwein aus dem Tetrapack). Sake ist jedoch viel komplexer als Wein, über 400 Nuancen können beschrieben werden, bei Wein sind es nur die Hälfte.

Vor wenigen Jahren wurde Ibiza von einer japanischen Brise geküsst, Sushi Restaurants poppten wie Shiitakepilze aus dem Boden und der kleine Windhauch hat sich bis heute zu einem ausgewachsenen Sturm entwickelt: Code Red! Die japanische und die Nikkei Küche boomt und das hat uns ermutigt, auch unsere Sake Kollektion zu erweitern, denn starke Aromen wie Wasabi, Ingwer oder Sojasoße sind weniger kompatibel mit Wein. Schöne Begleiter sind Tee oder Wasser, doch da mag der eine oder andere den Alkohol vermissen (wir auch!).

Freunde vom Restaurant Nagai brachten mich mit einer Delegation von Sake Brauern zusammen: Ein Treffen, das mein Leben komplett verändern sollte.

Schon im darauffolgenden Winter fand ich mich mit meinem Vater Jeroen, mit dem ich unser Geschäft betreibe, in einem Flugzeug nach Japan wieder. Wir besuchten zahlreiche Brauereien, lernten sehr viel über Sake und den Produktionsprozess, vom Reiskorn bis zum Premiumprodukt. Am dritten Tag unserer Reise,

snow (during that time of the year the temperature drops in Hokkaido to a “pleasant” -20°C) and professionally tasting through numerous sakes, we found ourselves in a beautiful Michelin starred restaurant and at the table we were welcomed by Mr Sato, the president of Takasago Shuzo in Asahikawa, Hokkaido (the northern most island of Japan). After being well marinated by his most popular sake, the Kokoshimuzo or “Distinguished Person”, a dry and meaty sake, Mr Sato claimed he had a surprise for us, and my first thought was ‘oh god, not karaoke now’!

He rushed us into the waiting taxis and took us to his brewery, the eldest of the region. By this time the temperature had dropped to -29°C and Mr Sato made us go into the courtyard, where we were greeted by one of his employees handing out plastic gloves.

Después de estar bien marinado por su sake más popular, el Kokoshimuzo o “Persona Distinguida”, un sake seco y carnoso, el Sr. Sato afirmó que tenía una sorpresa para nosotros, y mi primer pensamiento fue “¡por favor, que no sea el karaoke ahora!”

Nos apresuró a coger los taxis que estaban esperando y nos llevó a su cervecería, la más antigua de la región. En ese momento la tempe-

Nachdem er uns mit nicht wenigen Tassen seines besten Sake, einem trockenen und fleischigen Kokoshimuzo bewirtet hatte, verkündete er strahlend, dass er eine Überraschung für uns hätte und ich dachte verschreckt: „Oh nein, nun doch noch Karaoke“!

Er stürzte mit uns ins Taxi und brachte uns zur ältesten Brauerei der Region. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wärmte uns bereits der Sake, die Temperatur außen jedoch war auf -29 Grad gefallen, wenig Freude hatten wir daher an den Plastikhandschuhen, die uns verpasst wurden.

In dieser besonderen Brauerei wird der Sake in einer Art Eisdom (oder Iglo) gefiltert, in dem

like, where the temperature stabilises at around -2°C and creates an atmosphere where nasty bacteria can’t survive in, creating a clean and pure sake. The dome is built at night and we were asked to participate. Thankfully we had lots of sake running through our veins as a sort of antifreeze.

After this trip of a life time, I decided to expand my knowledge and since have obtained my sake sommelier certification, knowledge I now share by training the staff at the top venues in Ibiza, who share my passion for sake and drinks alike. We can proudly say we hold the largest collection of premium craft sake on the island, which can be found at numerous top restaurants.

Mr Sato now comes and visits us once a year, which I prefer, as having lived all my life in Ibiza, I’m not made for such extreme temperatures. n

Esta cervecería en particular es famosa por filtrar su sake en una cúpula de hielo, o iglú, donde la temperatura se estabiliza en torno a -2ºC y crea una atmósfera donde las molestas bacterias no pueden sobrevivir, creando un ambiente limpio y un sake puro. La cúpula se construye por la noche, así que nos animaron a participar. Afortunadamente hubo un montón de sake corriendo por nuestras venas, como una especie de anticongelante.

Después de este viaje irrepetible, decidí ampliar mis conocimientos y desde entonces he obtenido mi certificación como sommelier de sake, un conocimiento que ahora comparto formando al personal de los mejores lugares de Ibiza, donde comparten mi pasión por el sake y las bebidas por igual. Podemos decir con orgullo que tenemos la colección más grande de sake premium artesanal en la isla, y que se puede encontrar en numerosos restaurantes de calidad.

El Sr. Sato ahora nos visita una vez al año, y yo lo prefiero, pues tras haber vivido toda mi vida en Ibiza, no estoy hecho para esas temperaturas extremas. n

Nach dieser bewusstseinserweiternden Reise wandelte ich mein Wissen in Expertise um und legte die Zertifizierung zum Sake Sommelier ab. Seither schule ich die Mitarbeiter der Top Locations von Ibiza, die meine Leidenschaft zu Sake teilen. n the studio and in the booth, striking esoteric melodies and twisted, hypnotic vocals are Francesca Lombardo’s calling card. Listening to her elegant dancefloor productions it comes as no surprise then that Francesca, who originates from Lake Garda, the biggest lake in northern Italy, is a classically trained musician.

“When I was young my father sang a lot,” Francesca explains. “We would make harmonies together from scratch. When I went to school at the Conservatorium of music, I played piano, guitar and practiced singing.

When I started making electronic music I was able to apply the things I learnt there directly into my productions.”

Francesca is finally set to release her much anticipated debut artist album later this year.

In 2015, the project was on the brink of release, but Francesca changed her mind at the last moment. “I held the album back because of the way it sounds,” Francesca continues. “It’s very different to my DJ/production sound. This is not a dancefloor techno album. It’s still electronic, but more cinematic. There are so many live elements and I’m singing on all the tracks.

I felt like I needed to establish myself as a club DJ before releasing it. I wanted to make sure people didn’t get confused. I wanted to make sure I had one foot in the DJ world before I stepped over to the other side!”

If the natural beauty of Lake Garda nurtured Francesca’s sense of melody, England’s illegal rave scene fostered her love for tough, uncompromising underground sounds. “I moved to

“Cuando era joven, mi padre cantaba mucho”, explica Francesca. “Podíamos crear armonías vocales juntos desde cero… Más adelante, cuando fui al Conservatorio de música, aprendí a tocar el piano, la guitarra y practicaba el canto. Cuando empecé a hacer música electrónica, pude aplicar las cosas que aprendí allí en mis producciones”.

Francesca lanzará su esperado álbum de debut a finales de este año. En 2015, el proyecto iba a ser editado, pero Francesca cambió de idea en el último momento. “Retuve el álbum por cómo suena”, continúa Francesca. “Es muy diferente al sonido que me identifica como DJ. No es un disco de techno para las pistas de baile. Es electrónica, pero más cinematográfica.

Hay instrumentos en vivo y canto en todas las pistas. Sentí que necesitaba establecerme primero como DJ de club antes de lanzarlo. Quería asegurarme de que la gente no se confundiera. ¡Quería asegurarme de tener un pie en el mundo de los DJs antes de pasar al otro lado!”.

Wenn man sich so ihre eleganten Dancefloor Produktionen anhört, dann verwundert es kaum, dass Francesca, die aus der Gegend um den Gardasee, stammt, eine klassisch ausgebildete Musikerin ist. „Als ich klein war, sang mein Vater sehr oft“, erklärt Francesca. „Wir erfanden spontan Harmonien. Als ich aufs Musik-Konservatorium ging, spielte ich Klavier, Gitarre und studierte Gesang. Mit Beginn meiner elektronischen Produktionen konnte ich all das einbringen.“ In diesem Jahr veröffentlicht Francesca endlich ihr langerwartetes Debütalbum. Bereits 2015 stand das Projekt kurz vor dem Release, im letzten Moment entschied sich die Künstlerin aber dagegen. „Ich hielt das Album zurück wegen des Sounds“, so Francesca weiter. „Es unterscheidet sich sehr von meinem DJ/Produktionssound. Dies ist kein Dancefloor Techno Album. Es ist schon elektronisch, aber dabei bildhafter. Es gibt viele Live-Elemente, zudem singe ich auf jedem Track. Ich hatte das Gefühl, ich muss mich als Club DJ noch mehr durchsetzen, bevor ich es veröffentliche. Ich wollte vermeiden, dass es die Leute durcheinander bringt, und sicher sein, einen Fuß in der DJ-Welt zu haben, bevor ich zur anderen Seite wechsle!“ War es die Naturschönheit des Gardasees, die Francescas Sinn für Melodien befeuerte, so bestärkte Großbritanniens illegale Rave-Szene

London in 1999,” Francesca recalls. “I ended up engaging the illegal rave scene. I started meeting all these DJs who had studios and I got into it even more. I ventured as far north as Newcastle, following those rave soundsystems around the country. Later I started DJing, but at first it was just for fun. I didn’t realise DJing could become a job, so I didn’t really push it. At the time, my main objective was to find a band so I could sing.”

Later, Francesca would study music production and sound engineering in London. She started building her own studio and even started DJing at a few of the illegal raves that dominated the era. “By 2003, I was also DJing in Spain,” Francesca continues. “I had a friend who got me a few gigs. They would pay your flights and maybe £100 a party. Back then DJs didn’t even have managers. None of that existed. Even then it was all just for fun. Then after a while, music sort of became my job.”

Now firmly established as one of the leading techno DJs on the international circuit, Francesca’s decision to finally showcase the singer, songwriter side of her repertoire seems perfectly timed. “Sometimes it doesn’t pay to rush things,” she smiles. “With my new album project I knew I had to consider every detail, every element. I needed to get the music right, the graphics right, but most importantly the timing had to be right.” n

“Un amigo me consiguió varios bolos. Me pagaban el vuelo y poco más de 100€ por la sesión.

Por entonces los DJs ni siquiera teníamos managers. Nada de eso existía. Incluso entonces todo lo hacía por diversión. Después de un tiempo, la música se convirtió en mi trabajo”.

Ahora Francesa ya está establecida como una de las principales DJs techno en el circuito internacional. Y la decisión de mostrar su faceta como cantante y compositora aparece justo a tiempo. “A veces no vale la pena apresurar las cosas”, sonríe. “Con este disco sabía que tenía que meditar cada detalle. Necesitaba cuidar todos los elementos, editar la música correcta… y lo más importante: hacerlo en el momento oportuno”. n

Sie begann, sich ein eigenes Studio aufzubauen und DJte sogar bei jenen illegalen Raves. „2003 legte ich auch in Spanien auf“, fährt Francesca fort. „Ein Freund besorgte mir ein paar Gigs. Sie bezahlten die Flüge, dazu so um die £100 pro Party.

Damals hatten DJs nicht einmal einen Manager, all das gab es nicht. Es ging damals nur um den Spaß. Dann wurde es nach einer Weile zu meinem Job.“ Inzwischen hat sich Francesca als eine der führenden Techno DJs im internationale Circuit etabliert, und ihre Entscheidung, endlich auch ihr Repertoire als Sängerin und Songwriterin zu präsentieren, ist bestens getimed. „Manchmal zahlt es sich aus, nichts zu überstürzen“, lächelt sie. „Bei meinem neuen Albumprojekt musste ich auf jedes Detail achten. Die Musik muss stimmen, die Grafiken, aber am wichtigsten ist das richtige Timing.“ n

rish techno headliner Gavin Lynch, better known to the world as Matador, was born to entertain large crowds. If he wasn’t touring the world with his dark, trippy underground sound, you would almost certainly find him plying his trade in the boxing ring.

“I played a lot of football when I was younger,” Gavin explains. “But to be honest I wasn't that good. That’s why I went into boxing. In the boxing ring you are totally responsible for everything that happens on the night. I guess it’s a bit like DJing; you can’t blame your teammates if things go wrong!”

In his teenage years, Gavin was very much on his own personal crusade inside the ring.

He boxed at an amateur level, had plenty of fights, most of which he won. “Performing in front of a crowd became something I learnt to deal with,” the Rukus label boss continues.

“You’re on your own in the ring, just you and your nerves. It’s a feeling that translates pretty closely to standing out in front of a big club or festival crowd, where it’s all eyes on you. In those situations the pressure is on. You walk into a nightclub before your set, you want to meet people and hear what everyone has to say, but you’re also thinking about your performance. There’s a lot of stuff going on in your head. Even today, I still get the same butterflies in my stomach before each gig. But you know what? I think it’s a really good sign. I remember

“Jugaba mucho al fútbol cuando era joven”, explica Gavin. “Pero para ser honesto, no era muy bueno. Por eso me metí en el boxeo. En el ring eres responsable de todo lo que sucede.

Supongo que se parece a pinchar. ¡No puedes culpar a tus compañeros de equipo si las cosas van mal!”.

En su adolescencia, Gavin vivió su cruzada personal dentro del ring. Boxeó a nivel amateur y disputó muchas peleas, la mayoría de las cuales ganó. “Actuar delante de una multitud se convirtió en algo con lo que aprendí a lidiar”, continúa el jefe del sello Rukus. “Estás solo en el ring: tú y tus nervios. Es una sensación muy parecida a la de enfrentarse al público de un gran club o festival, donde eres el foco de todas las miradas. En esas situaciones la presión está por las nubes. Caminas por el club antes de tu actuación, quieres conocer el lugar, hablar con la gente, pero también estás pensando en tu actuación. Hay un montón de cosas pasando en tu cabeza. Wenn er nicht mit seinem dunklen, trippigen Underground Sound um die Welt reisen würde, man könnte sicher davon ausgehen, ihn in einem Boxring umhertänzeln zu sehen. „Als ich noch jünger war, habe ich viel Fußball gespielt“, erklärt Gavin. „Aber um ehrlich zu sein, war ich nicht besonders gut. Darum habe ich mit dem Boxen angefangen. Im Boxring bist du ganz auf dich allein gestellt. Es ist ein bisschen wie beim DJing: Du kannst deine Teamkameraden nicht dafür verantwortlich machen, wenn etwas schief geht!“ Als Teenager war Gavin auf seinem ganz persönlichen Kreuzzug durch den Boxring. Er kämpfte im Amateurstatus, absolvierte viele Fights, von denen er die meisten gewann. „Ich habe gelernt mit dem Kampf vor Publikum klarzukommen“, erzählt der Rukus-Labelboss weiter. „Du bist im Ring ganz allein. Nur du und deine Nerven. Es kommt dem Gefühl sehr nahe, in einem großen Club oder vor einer Festival-Crowd zu stehen, wenn alle Augen auf dich gerichtet sind. In diesen Situationen entsteht der Druck. Du kommst vor deinem Set in den Club, willst dich mit Leuten treffen und hören, was sie zu sagen haben. Gleichzeitig hast du deine Performance im Hinterkopf, da passiert eine Menge in dir. Noch heute habe

reading an interview with Dave Clarke years ago. He said, ‘If you're not getting those butterflies, there's something wrong. It means you just don't care.’”

According to Gavin, it takes approximately three minutes for the butterflies to stop fluttering. After that, a different kind of adrenaline takes over. “When you’re DJing, especially DJing live, it's all about getting off the mark.

You want to make sure that all of your systems are stable, that everything is running sweetly and sounding good. Then, once you're up and running, it's pretty much smooth sailing. The butterflies disappear and I find myself entering what I refer to as the autopilot stage. That’s when the music really starts flowing.”

The ability to manage his emotions in supercharged situations is something Gavin picked up in the ring. “One of the first things we were taught when we were boxing was how to compartmentalise our emotions,” says Gavin. “You have to box off your feelings and hold them there without letting them take over. Imagine standing back stage at a big festival. You know there are 10,000 people out there, everyone jumping around and screaming. The energy is wild. But when I get on stage I know it’s my job to stay nice and calm. That sort of mindfulness is something I still practice today – and it’s something I took from boxing.” n

Una vez que todo está en funcionamiento, las mariposas desaparecen y entro en la fase de piloto automático. Ahí es cuando la música realmente empieza a fluir”.

La capacidad de manejar sus emociones en situaciones límite es algo que Gavin aprendió en el ring. “Una de las primeras cosas que nos enseñaron cuando estábamos en el boxeo fue cómo dejar a un lado nuestras emociones”, dice Gavin. “Tienes que controlar tus sentimientos y no dejarlos tomar el control. Imagina estar en el escenario de un gran festival.

Tienes a 10.000 personas frente a ti, todo el mundo saltando y gritando. La energía es salvaje. Pero cuando subo al escenario, sé que mi trabajo es estar tranquilo. Esa clase de ejercicio mental es algo que todavía practico hoy… Y es algo que aprendí del boxeo”. n

Aber weißt du was? Das ist ein gutes Zeichen.

Ich erinnere mich an ein Interview mit Dave Clarke, das ich gelesen habe. Er sagte ‚Wenn du diese Schmetterlinge nicht fühlst, stimmt etwas nicht. Dann ist es dir egal.“ Geht es nach Gavin, dann dauert es etwa drei Minuten, bis die Schmetterlinge aufhören zu flattern. Danach übernimmt eine andere Art Adrenalin das Kommando. „Wenn du DJst, vor allem live, geht alles um den Start. Deine Systeme müssen stabil sein, damit alles rund läuft und bestens klingt. Wenn das hinhaut, läuft es fast wie von selbst. Die Schmetterlinge verschwinden und du wechselst, wie ich es nenne, auf Autopilot. Das ist der Moment, wenn die Musik richtig zu fließen beginnt.“ Die Fähigkeit, in absoluten Ausnahmesituationen mit seinen Gefühlen klarzukommen, hat Gavin im Ring erworben. „Eines der ersten Dinge, die man uns beigebracht hat, war, wie man seine Emotionen in Schach hält“, sagt Gavin. „Du musst deine Gefühle wegpacken und sie dort lassen. Stell’ dir vor, du bist backstage bei einem großen Festival. Du weißt, da sind 10.000 Leute, alle springen herum und schreien. Die Energie ist irre. Wenn ich dann auf die Bühne gehe, ist es mein Job, ruhig und entspannt zu bleiben. Diese Art der Besonnenheit ist etwas, das ich immer noch trainiere – und ich habe es beim Boxen gelernt.“ n

hen it comes to spooky, groove-laden house and techno music, consider Swedish DJ/producer La Fleur an authority. Her distinctive sound conquered Berlin’s immeasurably educated underground scene in record time. Now she’s making serious waves here in Ibiza.

“I think my love for music comes from dancing,” La Fleur explains. “Ballet three times a week, salsa. I also played the piano, the flute and I’ve always loved painting. But as soon as I was old enough to go clubbing, I knew I’d found my calling.”

La Fleur flittered around the edges of the dance scene, but it never occurred to her that she could actually pursue a career in the music industry. Instead, she concentrated on her studies, taking a masters degree in Pharmaceutical Science. Having qualified, she started working for a pharmaceutical company, but ultimately the job left her creatively unfulfilled.

“I came to the point where I had to choose between working days as a pharmacist or nights as a DJ,” La Fleur recalls. “In 2007, I asked my boss if I could go to Berlin for three months. I knew I needed to get away to cultivate a little inspiration. Three months later, I called him back and said, ‘Can I get another six months?’ I knew deep down that I needed to stay in Berlin for at least another year. So I said to myself, well, I can always be a pharmacist when I’m 50 years-old!”

In comparison to the thousands of young aspirants who flock to Europe’s countercultural capital every year, La Fleur was in a strong position. She was already a recognised DJ in Sweden and if her international music ambitions went unrealised then at least she had her pharmaceutical career to fall back on. Musically, she felt no pressure to compromise. She could simply be herself.

“I didn’t know anyone in Berlin when I

“Creo que mi amor por la música proviene del baile”, explica La Fleur. “Hacía ballet tres veces a la semana, y también bailaba salsa.

Además tocaba el piano, la flauta y siempre me ha encantado pintar. Pero en cuanto tuve edad suficiente para ir a la discoteca, supe que había encontrado mi vocación”.

La Fleur flirteó con la escena de la danza, pero nunca se le ocurrió que podía forjarse una carrera en la industria de la música. Por eso se concentró en sus estudios, y obtuvo un máster en Farmacia. Después de licenciarse, comenzó a trabajar para una empresa farmacéutica, pero más adelante dejó el trabajo porque no se sentía satisfecha a nivel creativo.

“Llegué a un punto en el que tuve que elegir entre días laborables como farmacéutica o noches como DJ”, recuerda La Fleur. “En 2007, le pregunté a mi jefe si podía mudarme a Berlín tres meses. Sabía que necesitaba alejarme para cultivar un poco de inspiración. Tres meses más tarde, le llamé y le dije: ‘¿Puedo tener otros seis meses más?’ Sabía en el fondo que tenía que quedarme en Berlín por lo menos un año más. Así que me dije… ¡Bueno, siempre puedo ser farmacéutica cuando tenga 50 años!”

En comparación con los miles de jóvenes aspirantes que acuden cada año a la capital contra cultural de Europa, La Fleur se encontraba en una posición privilegiada. Ella ya era un DJ reconocida en Suecia y si sus ambiciones internacionales en la música no se cumplían, siempre le quedaría su carrera como farmacéutica.

Musicalmente, no sentía ninguna presión. Simplemente podía ser ella misma.

Ihr unverwechselbarer Sound hat die Underground Szene Berlins in Rekordzeit erobert. Jetzt sorgt sie auch hier in Ibiza für Aufsehen. „Meine Liebe zur Musik kommt vom Tanzen“, erklärt La Fleur. „Ballett dreimal die Woche, Salsa. Ich spielte auch Klavier, Flöte, ich habe schon immer gemalt. Als ich jedoch alt genug fürs Clubbing war, wusste ich, wofür mein Herz schlägt.“ La Fleur war regelmäßig in der Dance Scene unterwegs, aber auf die Idee einer Karriere im Musik Business wäre sie nicht gekommen.

Stattdessen konzentrierte sie sich auf ihr Studium, machte ihren Master Degree in Pharmakologie. Sie arbeitete anschließend eine Pharma-Company, in Sachen Kreativität erfüllten sich ihre Wünsche jedoch nicht. „Ich kam an den Punkt, da ich mich zwischen meinem Tagesjob als Apothekerin und dem Nachtjob als DJ entscheiden musste.“ erinnert sich La Fleur. „2007 fragte ich meinen Chef, ob ich für drei Monate nach Berlin gehen könnte.

Ich wusste, dass ich für ein wenig Inspiration sorgen musste. Nach drei Monaten rief ich ihn an und sagte: ‚Könnte ich noch sechs Monate bleiben?‘ Tief in mir wusste ich, dass ich noch mindestens ein Jahr in Berlin würde bleiben müssen. Also sagte ich mir, hey, Apothekerin kann ich noch mit 50 sein!“ Im Vergleich zu den tausenden jungen Talenten, die sich in Europas Hauptstadt der Gegenkultur versammeln, war La Fleur in einer guten Ausgangsposition. In Schweden hatte sie es bereits zu einigem Erfolg gebracht und sollte es mit der Karriere doch nichts werden, dann hatte sie immer noch den Apothekerjob als Fallback-Option. Es gab für sie keinen Anlass, Kompromisse einzugehen. Sie konnte einfach sie selbst sein.

ARCADE FIRE – „EVERYTHING NOW“

(Columbia)

Thirteen years have now elapsed since Arcade Fire made their remarkable 'exclamation' mark with their début album, “Funeral”. Songs like the fourpart “Neighborhood” or the irresistible “Rebellion (Lies)” set out to rewrite Indie rock in its entirety, no less. Highly melodious, meaningful subjects, great drama – Win Butler and his manyheaded band combined cerebral concepts with catchy pop, and continued to do so on later records such as “Neon Bible” and the exquisite “The Suburbs”. After “Reflektor”, which was released on the market with a lot of artistic fuss, with “Everything Now” the Canadians have now not only regained a steady footing, but also taken a lightfooted step towards the dancefloor. The title track already exudes latent Iberian charm, recalling, not incidentally, the blessed times of Abba. The rest of the album also steams with stylistically selfconscious arrangements. What is still missing for them to climb finally up to the top floor in order to accommodate themselves between U2 and Ed Sheeran? Perhaps that one allencompassing hit. But even in the absence of the hit there is quality, because in the middle of the mainstream the tracks also tends to be too deep sometimes.

Han pasado trece años desde que Arcade Fire publicaran su notable álbum de debut: “Funeral”.

Canciones como “Neighborhood” o la irresistible “Rebellion (Lies)” se propusieron reescribir los códigos del indie rock. Win Butler y los suyos se presentaron como una banda de melodías memorables y temas grandilocuentes y dramáticos. En su debut combinaron conceptos cerebrales con pop pegadizo, y continuaron haciéndolo en discos posteriores como “Neon Bible” y el exquisito “The Suburbs”. Su última entrega es “Reflektor”, un disco que se ha lanzado al mercado con mucho ruido mediático.

Con el primer single, “Everything Now”, los canadienses han dado un paso hacia la pista de baile. El tema titular tiene aires ibéricos y recuerda bastante a los tiempos benditos de Abba. El resto del álbum también ofrece guiños conscientes a otros géneros y artistas reconocibles. Aunque todavía carecen de un hit total que les haga subir otro peldaño, y sean el cruce perfecto entre U2 y Ed Sheeran, Arcade Fire han demostrado con este disco que las propuestas profundas también pueden tener hueco en el mainstream.

Dreizehn Jahre ist es schon, da setzten Arcade FIre mit ihrem Debütalbum „Funeral“ ein beachtliches Ausrufezeichen. Songs wie das vierteilige „Neighborhood“ oder das unwiderstehliche „Rebellion (Lies)“ schickten sich an, nicht weniger als den gesamten Indierock neu zu buchstabieren. Hochmelodiös, tiefschürfende Themen, großes Drama – Win Butler und seine vielköpfige Bande kombinierten verkopfte Konzepte mit eingängigem Pop, und das auch auf den späteren Platten wie „Neon Bible“ und dem exquisiten „The Suburbs“. Nach dem mit viel Kunstbrimborium in den Markt entlassenen „Reflektor“ haben die Kanadier nun via „Everything Now“ nicht nur wieder Bodenhaftung zurückgewonnen, sondern auch einen leichtfüßigen Schritt Richtung Dancefloor getan. Schon der Titeltrack verströmt latent iberischen Charme und gemahnt nicht zufällig an selige Abba-Zeiten, auch der Rest des Albums dampft nur so vor stilistisch selbstbewussten Arrangements. Was ihnen noch fehlt, um endgültig in die oberste Etage aufzusteigen, um es sich zwischen U2 und Ed Sheeran kommod zu machen? Vielleicht der eine allumfassende Hit. Aber auch im Fehlen des Hits liegt eine Qualität, denn mitten im Mainstream wird das Geläuf auch gern einmal etwas zu tief.

GHOSTPOET – „DARK DAYS & CANAPÉS“

Great Britain’s inspired middle class poet, Obaro Ejimive, remains a phenomenon, a stylistic free spirit who accomplishes the feat of hanging between styles while having settled in very nicely there. On the predecessor, “Shedding Skin”, the Nigerianborn resident of London fully expressed his musical formula for the first time: the recipe for success was a jazzbased sound at the interface of indie pop, Ejimive’s melancholic rap singing embedded in triphoppy beats. With Dark Days & Canapés, he has gone deeper into this style, and has once again managed to construct melancholic tracks that, nonetheless, never sound hopeless. The inclusion of Massive Attack member, Daddy G., who guests on the album, is extremely coherent. Tracks such as “Freakshow”, the profound “Helicopter Boogie” or the soberly descriptive “Blind as a Bat” cast a revealing light on life in British cities on the eve of Brexit. Songs that pause, look backwards and lend a perspective.

Ones that, despite all the darkness, also lead you to suspect there might just be light at the end of the tunnel.

El inspirado poeta de la clase media de Gran Bretaña, Obaro Ejimive, sigue siendo un fenómeno, un espíritu libre que se mueve con seguridad y gracia entre géneros. En su anterior trabajo, “Shedding Skin”, el londinense (aunque nigeriano de nacimiento) dio a conocer su fórmula musical, un sonido basado en la fusión del jazz y el indie pop, en el que su emocionante rap se fundía con beats de estilo triphop.

Con “Dark Days & Canapés” ha profundizado en su estilo y ha conseguido crear temas melancólicos que, sin embargo, nunca suenan desesperados. La inclusión del miembro de Massive Attack, Daddy G., invitado en el disco, es muy coherente. Pistas como “Freakshow”, el profundo “Helicopter Boogie” o el sobriamente descriptivo “Blind as a Bat” arrojan luz –de forma reveladora– sobre la vida en las ciudades británicas en la víspera del Brexit. Canciones que hacen una pausa, miran hacia atrás y ofrecen perspectiva. Música para los que a pesar de la oscuridad, saben ver la luz al final del túnel.

Der Geisterpoet aus Großbritannien, bürgerlich Obaro Ejimive, bleibt ein Phänomen, ein stilistischer Freigeist, der das Kusntstück vollbringt, sich zwischen alle Stühle zu sitzen, sich dort aber ein sehr wohnliches Plätzchen eingerichtet zu haben. Auf dem Vorgänger „Shedding Skin“ hatte der gebürtige Nigerianer mit Wohnsitz London seine Soundformel erstmals voll ausgespielt: Jazziges Soundfundament an der Schnittstelle zum Indiepop, Ejimives melancholischer Rapgesang, gebettet auf triphoppigen Beats, das war das Erfolgsrezept. Mit „Dark Days & Canapés“ vertieft er diesen Stil, und schafft es erneut, düstere Tracks zu konstruieren, die dennoch nie hoffnungslos klingen. Äußerst stimmig, dass mit Daddy G. ein Mitglied von Massive Attack auf dem Album gastiert.

Tracks wie „Freakshow“, der tiefgründige „Helicopter Boogie“ oder das nüchtern beschreibende „Blind as a Bat“ werfen ein entlarvendes Licht auf das Leben in den britischen Städten am Vorabend des Brexits. Songs, die innehalten, die dahinter schauen und einen Ausblick geben. Die bei aller Dunkelheit aber auch ahnen lassen, dass es womöglich doch ein Licht am Ende des Tunnels geben könnte.

JEAN CLAUDE ADES – „APPASSIONATA / ORDINARY DAY“

Be Crazy – that is everything with Jean Claude Ades: assertive, exciting, attitude to life and, of course, the slogan itself: Be Crazy. Be crazy.

And creative: Jean Claude Ades refines this year's summer season with two new tracks, which are now out on the Be Crazy label.

“Appassionata” and “Ordinary Day” are the titles and both tracks fit perfectly into the portfolio of one of Ibiza’s most famous DJs and producers, one whose style is as unique as it is imaginative: Deep Tech House of the most inspired kind, perfectly seasoned with percussive elements, irresistible bass lines and surprising, unusual moments. A Mooglike pattern forms the groundwork of “Appassionata”, on top of which there are magical string sequences and keyboard lines, held on the ground by an unmistakably powerful bass drum. “Ordinary Day” is anything other than 'ordinary', as the tongue-in-cheek title suggests. Quite the contrary, the track gives a musical kickstart right onto the high season’s energy level. Flowing percussion, filigree drum loops, synth strings as well as Sterea’s grandiose vocals. The expansive breakdown that rounds the track out at the end is also perfectly timed. The musthear track of the 2017 season.

Be Crazy representa todo lo que es Jean Claude Ades: asertivo, emocionante, positivo y por supuesto, tan loco –y creativo– como reza su eslogan. El DJ y productor francogermano remata la temporada de verano lanzando dos nuevos temas en su sello: “Appassionata” y “Ordinary Day”. Ambos tracks encajan perfectamente en la maleta de uno de los DJs y productores más famosos de Ibiza, cuyo estilo es tan único como imaginativo: Deep Tech House inspirado, perfectamente sazonado con elementos de percusión, líneas de bajo irresistibles y momentos sorprendentes. Un patrón sintético al estilo Moog forma la base de “Appassionata”, combinado con secuencias de cuerdas, líneas de teclado mágicas y un poderoso bombo. “Ordinary Day”, por su parte, no es un tema precisamente ‘ordinario’. Todo lo contrario, es un tema que condensa esa energía propia del inicio de temporada: percusiones fluidas, filigranas rítmicas y arreglos de cuerda… Todo ello alrededor de la poderosa voz de Sterea y con un breakdown final perfectamente sincronizado. Uno de los temas imprescindibles de la temporada 2017.

Be Crazy – das ist bei Jean Claude Ades alles: Imperativ, Anregung, Lebenseinstellung und natürlich das eigene Credo: Be Crazy. Sei verrückt. Und kreativ: Jean Claude Ades veredelt die diesjährige Sommersaison mit gleich zwei neuen Tracks, die jetzt unter der Be-Crazy-Marke erscheinen. „Appassionata“ und „Ordinary Day“ lauten die Titel und beide Tracks fügen sich bestens in das Portfolio von einem der bekanntesten DJs und Produzenten Ibizas, sein Stil so unique wie wie einfallsreich: Deep Tech-House der inspiriertesten Art, fein abgeschmeckt mit perkussiven Elementen, unwiderstehlicher Bassline und überraschenden, ungewöhnlichen Momenten. Ein moogartiges Pattern bildet das Fundament von „Appassionata“, darauf geradezu magische Streicher-Sequenzen und Keyboard-Lines, am Boden gehalten von einer unüberhörbar wuchtigen Bassdrum. „Ordinary Day“ ist dann alles andere als ,gewöhnlich‘, wie der Titel augenzwinkernd behauptet, im Gegenteil, der Track bildet einen klanggewordenen Kickstart direkt auf das Energielevel der Hochsaison. Fließende Percussion, filigrane Drumloops, Synthie-Streicher, dazu Stereas grandiosen Vocals. Perfekt im Timing auch der raumgreifende Breakdown, der den Track schließlich rundmacht. Musthear der Saison 2017.

ZOOT WOMAN – „ABSENCE“

(Snowhite/Rough Trade)

The UK’s Zoot Woman shaped a not inconsiderable part of the noughties’ sound. Having already started out life as an instrumental band in 1995, with “Living in a Magazine” in 2001 the triumphal march of the 80s-infatuated dandies began. Songs like the title track, “It‘s Automatic” or the gigantic “You and I” had the dancefloor impetus of Daft Punk, the elegance of Duran Duran and, ultimately, attracted the attention of superstars like Madonna. As a result, the Queen of Pop entrusted founder member Stuart Price with the production of her tracks time and again. What's more, Zoot Woman's trademark sound is almost unchanged over two decades after the launch; it's just been somewhat modernised in terms of studio technique here and there. The stylistic palette remains unaltered: electronic delicacies, 80s’ quotes, slightly rasping guitars and classic beats from indie disco “Solid Gold” is a wakeup call for the dance floor, “Ordinary Face” sees the foot taken off the accelerator, and, lastly, “Still Feels Like the First Time” a collaboration with Kylie Minogue, is a flawless ballad between disco and drama. According to singer, Johnny Blake, “Our goal was to find a balance between older sounding sounds and modern synthesisers.”

Like this, the record has become more varied.

It”s pointless to disagree: you just wish they might have put a bit more effort into the cover.

Los ingleses Zoot Woman formaron parte del nada despreciable sonido de los 90s. Comenzaron su andadura en 1995 como banda instrumental, pero no fue hasta 2001 cuando cosecharon su primer gran éxito con “Living in a Magazine” gracias a su particular reivindicación de los 80s. Canciones como “It’s Automatic” o el gigantesco “You and I” unieron el ímpetu bailable de Daft Punk con la elegancia de Duran Duran, y llamaron la atención de estrellas como Madonna. Como resultado, la Reina del Pop le confió al miembro fundador Stuart Price la producción de sus canciones. De hecho, el sonido de Zoot Woman casi no ha experimentado cambios dos décadas después de su nacimiento. Se ha modernizado en términos de técnicas de estudio, pero la paleta estilística permanece inalterada: delicadezas electrónicas, citas de los años 80, guitarras ligeramente raspantes y ritmos para las discotecas indies. “Solid Gold” es una llamada de atención para la pista de baile, “Ordinary Face” levanta el pie del acelerador, mientras que “Still Feels Like the First Time”, en colaboración con Kylie Minogue, es una balada perfecta entre el disco y el drama. Según el cantante Johnny Blake, su objetivo era encontrar un equilibrio entre sonidos de sintetizadores antiguos y modernos. De esta manera, el disco se ha vuelto más variado. No tiene sentido estar en desacuerdo, sólo hubiera faltado que invirtieran más esfuerzo en la portada.

Songs wie der Titeltrack, „It‘s Automatic“ oder das gigantische „You and I“ hatten den Dancefloor-Impetus von Daft Punk, die Eleganz von Duran Duran und riefen schließlich Superstars wie Madonna auf den Plan. Die Queen of Pop vertraute in der Folge ein ums andere Mal Gründungsmitglied Stuart Price die Produktion ihrer Tracks an. Der TrademarkSound von Zoot Woman ist auch über zwei Dekaden nach dem Stapellauf beinah unverändert, nur da und dort studiotechnisch etwas modernisiert. Die Stilpalette bleibt unverändert: elektronische Delikatessen, 80s-Zitate, leicht kratzende Gitarren und klassische Beats aus der Indiedisco. „Solid Gold“ ist der Weckruf für den Tanzboden, mit „Ordinary Face“ wird der Fuß vom Gaspedal genommen, „Still Feels Like the First Time“ schließlich, eine Kollaboration mit Kylie Minogue, ist eine lupenreine Ballade zwischen Disco und Drama. “Unser Ziel war es”, so Sänger Johnny Blake, “eine Balance zu finden zwischen älter klingenden Sounds und modernen Synthesizern. Dadurch ist die Platte abwechslungsreicher geworden.” Widerspruch zwecklos, nur mit dem Cover hätte man sich gern etwas mehr Mühe geben dürfen.

PHOENIX – „TI AMO“

(Atlantic)

There’s scarcely a band that could have fitted better at this pointin the immediate vicinity of Zoot Woman’s new workthan Phoenix, of all people. Appearing on the scene at about the same time, the French band also had one foot permanently in disco and the other in indie pop. However, where Zoot Woman flirted with the snobbery of megalomaniac 80s superstars, the heart of Thomas Mars and his rather slackerlooking band mates was beating for French classics along the lines of “La Boum”, the Gainsbourg family or even Michel Polnareff.

Tracks like “Consolation Prizes” or “1901” turned into massive hits and the PR machine discovered the moneyspinning side to their melodies. It’s not entirely easy to keep their heads up as a "simple band" and thus, with “Ti Amo”, Phoenix now seem to push to one side anything that is top heavy and get back to doing what they are best able to: Writing melodies that are highly infectious and yet which always manage to just scrape past alltoo shallow bubblegum pop.

No hay una banda que encaje mejor con el álbum de Zoot Woman que Phoenix. Aparecieron en la escena casi al mismo tiempo, y la banda francesa siempre tuvo un pie en la discoteca y el otro en el indie pop. Sin embargo, cuando Zoot Woman flirteaban con el esnobismo de las súper estrellas megalómanas de los años 80, el corazón de Thomas Mars y sus compañeros de banda latía por los clásicos franceses como la familia Gainsbourg o incluso Michel Polnareff. Pistas como “Consolation Prizes” o “1901” se convirtieron en éxitos masivos y la industria descubrió el potencial de sus melodías. No es fácil mantenerse como una banda accesible, pero ahora Phoenix vuelven a ofrecer en “Ti Amo” lo que mejor saben hacer: escribir melodías pegadizas y flirtear con los códigos del bubblegum pop.

Kaum eine Band hätte an dieser Stelle, in unmittelbarer Nähe zum neuen Werk von Zoot Woman, besser gepasst, als ausgerechnet Phoenix. Ungefähr zeitgleich ins Licht getreten, hatten auch die Franzosen immer ein Standbein in der Disko, das andere im Indiepop. Wo Zoot Woman jedoch mit dem Snobismus der größenwahnsinnigen 80s-Superstars flirteten, schlug das Herz von Thomas Mars und seinen immer etwas schluffig daherkommenden Bandkollegen für frankophone Klassiker zwischen „La Boum“, Familie Gainsbourg oder auch Michel Polnareff. Tracks wie „Consolation Prizes“ oder „1901“ gerieten zu Riesenhits, die Werbemaschinerie entdeckte das verkaufsfördernde Element ihrer Melodien. Nicht ganz einfach, da den Kopf als „einfache Band“ oben zu behalten und so scheinen Phoenix nun mit „Ti Amo“ allzu Kopflastiges beiseite zu schieben und machen wieder das, was sie am besten können: Melodien schreiben, die einerseits hochinfizierend sind, dabei aber immer so eben am allzu seichten Bubblegum-Pop vorbeizuschrammen.

Once their records shaped my sense of humour; today it's my daughter Anni that pulls the classics by the Berlin cabaret legends down from the shelf. The gags may sometimes be trampled by 60s' guff, but it's good, timeless inanity nonetheless.

Sus discos dieron forma a mi sentido del humor. Y hoy es mi hija Anni la que tira de los clásicos de las leyendas del cabaret de Berlín.
