IBIZASTYLE – A N N I V E R S A R Y –

EDITORIAL T

he first edition of Ibiza Style magazine came out in August 2006. We have done some research into what was going on at that time.

Ten years ago:

Hace diez años:

…we said farewell to James Brown, Billy Preston and Wilson Pickett. …iTunes registered its one millionth download – it was Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound”. …the TV classic, “Top of the Pops”, aired on British screens for the last time. …the Finnish monster-rockers, Lordi, won the Eurovision Song Contest …over one million ravers danced at a peaceful Love Parade in Berlin. …the Rolling Stones played a free concert in Rio de Janeiro in front of two million spectators. …Germany celebrated the World Cup summer fairytale. …Barça won La Liga as well as the Champions League. …Alonso won the Formula 1 World Championship for the second time in a row. …Prince William and Kate Middleton were spotted together for the first time on a yacht off Ibiza. …Pont Vell in Santa Eulalia was declared to be “a cultural asset of particular interest”. …the Guardia Civil in Ibiza had to protect building workers working on the ‘motorway’ against protesting demonstrators. …competing British drug dealers had a shootout in San Antonio.

…dijimos adiós a James Brown, Billy Preston y Wilson Pickett.

THE NEW YORK CEO AND FOUNDER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS IMPULSIVE GROUP TALKS TO IBIZA STYLE ABOUT HIS PLANS FOR CREATING A NEW AND UNIQUE VENUE HERE ON THE ISLAND. EL CEO Y FUNDADOR DEL PRESTIGIOSO IMPULSIVE GROUP DE HABLA CON IBIZA STYLE SOBRE SUS PLANES PARA LA CREACIÓN DE UN ALGO NUEVO Y ÚNICO AQUÍ EN LA ISLA. ntrepreneur, hotelier, and real estate pioneer Hank Freid has made a career of creating inspirational, unique hotels in areas of New York which were not considered to be desirable, and by doing so, transforming neighbourhoods into more attractive and upcoming destinations within the city. Hank also has enjoyed a life of travelling, spending summers in St Tropez, Sardinia and on the Amalfi Coast and now, more recently, his heart has been captured, like so many before him by the magic of Ibiza.. an island still in its infancy, which he tells us is akin to the vibrant scene 10 or 12 years ago in Miami which made it such a thriving destination. Having spent some time in Santorini and Mykonos earlier in the season, which many people told him are ‘the places to be’, Hank tells us that for him, as beautiful as Greece is, it simply doesn’t compare to the inimitable vibe of the White Island, where he feels more of a connection to the Balearic spirit. He comes here to enjoy the party scene, the beaches and also, in the last year he has also been searching for properties which he can give his own special touch to, to create his own venue here on the island. Basing himself at the Ibiza Gran, where he has stayed for years, one of the very few five star hotels to be found, the distinctly small number of establishments of this quality which exist on an island where more and more people are seeking excellent and luxurious accommodation options is what has inspired

E

Hank’s search for the perfect properties. It all depends on finding that optimum place of real estate, and only he will know when he’s found the right spot, and will be able to begin to realise his dream of creating a venue of such excellence as his renowned, elegant hotel The Sanctuary which is in the very heart of New York City. Searching all over the island, he has looked at places in both Marina Botafoch and San Antonio amongst others, the latter being a strange choice, some may think, however, he says that, alongside a 5 star hotel, he can also envision creating a kind of boutique hostal, a place where young backpackers can stay in affordable shared accommodation with good service, allowing those who cannot afford the high prices of the superclubs and expensive restaurants, to gather together and experience the beauty of Ibiza. To conclude, the reason Hank is so determined to find the perfect properties here on Ibiza is because he feels like he is coming home when he arrives here, and that more and more people are eschewing the crowds and big money glamour of St Tropez to come and discover all that Ibiza has to offer. We wait with high expectations to see what innovative and undoubtedly stylish ventures Hank will bring to our shores in the future. n

CLOSE UP COOKING IN A POP UP RESTAURANT WITH GIN MARE. COCINANDO EN UN RESTAURANTE POP UP CON GIN MARE. IN EINEM POP UP RESTAURANT MIT GIN MARE KOCHEN.

alter El Nagar, a native of Milan, is a culinary nomad and a devotee of politics. He went to Mexico to fall in love and ended up in Los Angeles, where he didn’t become an actor. His latest concept, the Pop Up, is a success throughout Europe. Italy around the world beyond pasta and pizza.

W

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO GO TO LOS ANGELES IN ORDER TO NOT BECOME AN ACTOR?

In 2008. I never believed in the American dream; quite the opposite. However, after a year when it was very cold and it snowed a lot, I got a job offer in Beverly Hills that sounded really appealing. I didn’t like it and after three months I left for Mexico, to a magical town called San Miguel de Allende. That’s where I stayed for quite a time and also where I left my heart. Following that I went back to the USA and I have been living in Venice Beach for the last five years. The only time anyone offered me the chance to be an actor was in a monkeychef series. I turned it down. HOW MUCH ACTING IS GOING INTO YOUR COOKING LATELY?

On one hand, too much while not enough on the other. Let me explain: all the television, magazines and advertising form part of a system of production that uses celebrity chefs to sell a false idea of what the catering business really is. Unfortunately, in the majority of cases, it’s about exploiting individuals, products, entire regions and, ultimately, the customers.

W

W

WANN HAST DU DICH ENTSCHIEDEN NACH L.A.

IS WHAT WE EAT GETTING BETTER AND BETTER OR JUST STRANGER?

In general, the food is better in the restaurants where it’s more unusual because, more and more, we create our menus based on economic terms, brands and marketing. It’s almost as if what we’re doing is no longer cooking. What I do love about today’s cuisine is the mixture of cultures and one section of the public’s ability to know how to interpret it. WHICH CHEFS HAVE INSPIRED YOU AND WHY?

I’m self-taught. I have never had a mentor and I have never worked for any of the big names in cooking. I do, however, know how to read. Herve This is an inquiring mind, and a great author. He is a hero of contemporary cooking; the anti-demagogue, above all others. Davide Scabin is irreverent: it’s the only word you need to describe such a peculiarly Italian personality. And Ferran Adria. The lesson that I learned is that there’s no limit to your creative process. AS A NATIVE OF MILAN, WHAT HAS SILVIO BERLUSCONI CONTRIBUTED TO GASTRONOMY?

An entire generation of chefs wandering around the world. His last spell as Prime Minister was the most destructive one of all for Italian society what with his legislation against labour rights and pensions as well as other atrocities. The response among many young people was simply to reject that kind of society and to go abroad. I did the same thing. IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE HAPPY WITHOUT PASTA AND PIZZA?

Life is better without stereotypes, don’t you think? The truth is that when somebody sets out to discover the world they have to be prepared to sample the tastiest street food dishes in whichever country they find themselves. Obviously, I learnt it by experience: I wasted so much time searching for good pasta and pizzas in Maine but I felt like a fool when I discovered lobster roll, for example. Or Khachapuri in Russia, and many other delicacies.

AFTER TRYING THEIR MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE IN THE USA, DO THEY KNOW HOW TO FIND US ON THE MAP BY NOW?

DESPUÉS DE PROBAR EN USA SU COCINA MEDITERRÁNEA, ¿YA SABEN COLOCARNOS EN EL MAPA?

NACHDEM DIE MEDITERRANE KÜCHE DIE USA BEREITS EROBERTE, WISSEN DIE AMERIKANER AUCH, WO SIE UNS JETZT FINDEN?

It depends. Many of them are intelligent and they are very well-educated. They travel a lot and have no problem recognising flavours and matching them with cultures and countries that they already visited. At other times, unbelievably, what is in fashion in Los Angeles as Italian food are meatballs, pizza with tons of cheese and chicken parmigiana: something that no one’s heard of in Italy.

Depende.

¿TE PONE MÁS CONTENTO COMER CON GIN MARE?

BIST DU GLÜCKLICHER, WENN GIN MARE DEIN ESSEN BEGLEITET?

ARE YOU HAPPIER WHEN YOU EAT WITH GIN MARE?

What I like most is a good negroni, and best of all if it’s with Gin Mare. It’s a company that is very young, serious, exploratory, down-to-earth and innovative. They gave us a lot of support in Barcelona and here in Ibiza. Let’s see if we can keep going in Milan too. And more. HOW DID POP UP COME ABOUT?

¿CÓMO NACE POP UP?

WIE ENTSTAND DAS KONZEPT VON POP UP?

It was born from the needs of a chef to express what they think about their profession, with no limitations. Obviously, it’s very difficult. It is not all as natural as it might seem. It takes a lot of hard work. The logistics are a lot of fun but you rent a closed restaurant and set up an unsuspected concept for a limited time. It is a very dynamic atmosphere. WHAT IS A CULINARY NOMAD? HOW ARE THINGS GOING ON YOUR EUROPEAN TOUR?

¿QUÉ ES UN NÓMADA CULINARIO? ¿CÓMO ESTÁ RESULTANDO SU GIRA EUROPEA?

WAS IST EIN KULINARISCHER NOMADE? WIE FUNKTIONIERT EINE EUROPA-TOUR?

It is someone who wants to discover the way to develop their culinary and cultural ability by looking at a very, very broad horizon. The European tour is going very well: we went to Barcelona where we were the guests of Jorge Vidal’s Fooditeca. We went to Russia and cooked in the middle of a forest without electricity. And now we find ourselves in Ibiza. Very soon we will continue in Milan, my home city. After that, who knows? Very probably in Asia.

FINCAXÚ THE MAGIC OF IBIZA IN YOUR GLASS. LA MAGIA DE IBIZA EN TU COPA. DIE MAGIE IBIZAS IN DEINEM GLAS.

ith one foot in the modern world and the other set in tradition, FincaXú— an exquisite new liquor made up of the purest essences of Ibiza—has emerged. It is a surprising new take on Ibizan hierbas of exceptional strength, complexity and subtlety that is made from sherry flavoured with chamomile, vervain, juniper, mint and citric fruits. “This exquisite distilled drink acquires its personality after spending a minimum of 30 days in a barrel and also contains touches of ginger, ginseng, vanilla, honey and cane syrup, making it a 40º proof drink with a unique, versatile alcohol content, perfect to be enjoyed on its own or as the main ingredient in the most sophisticated cocktails”, Matthew Gilpin, the distiller, explains to us. Its presentation in society was organised by the events company, Ibiza Foodsense, belonging to Lucas Bahr Prats, who offered a pool party, Ibiza-style, where guests were able to enjoy this drink presented in delicious ways such as Xugroni, San Francisco Margarita, Ibiza Mule or, in all its purity, with FincaXú On The Rocks. At the presentation party all kinds of foods could be sampled including a spectacular paella. There was music from DJs such as Felix Da Funk and Javi Viana, vocal performances and farmers’ dances.

Behind FincaXú there lies a story stretching back more than 300 years, the history of the finca, Can Xuxú. It is the home of Alexandre Narakas, who has turned this idyllic place so typical of Ibiza at its most rural into an artisanal distillery and bodega. By using produce from his own finca he has managed to create a liquor with a soft golden colour, with a hint of both sweet and bitter and its label, designed with Phoenician influences and featuring a podenco as its emblem, perfectly reflects this island of contrasts, a haven of peace and home to the wildest parties. It is a drink that is different from any other that you can find in Ibifood, which is the exclusive distributor for it on the island. A tiny portion of the magical, luminous spirit of Ibiza, bottled to enamour the most discerning palates. n

THE LIVING LEGACY OF ERWIN BRONER VISITING A PART OF BRONER’S ARCHITECTURAL WORKS IN IBIZA. RECORREMOS PARTE DEL TRABAJO ARQUITECTÓNICO DE BRONER EN IBIZA. STREIFZUG DURCH EIN ARCHITEKTONISCHES ERBE AUF IBIZA.

ome houses are alive and not just because those living in them bring life and energy to them, but because their architecture speaks, their very structure and shape tell a story and you can feel it no sooner have you entered the door. They are houses that give you a similar kind of feeling to gazing at a beautiful work of art because they are buildings that possess a soul; a soul that was transmitted to them by the person who conceived of them, who drew up the plans for them and who specified what they had to be like: the architect. Ibiza can claim the honour of possessing among its extensive catalogue of charming houses works by the German architect and painter, Erwin Broner, who settled on the island in the mid 1930s, fleeing the horrors of Nazism. Here, in love with the traditional architecture of the island, he knew how to combine the most characteristic values of the farmers’ houses with their straight lines, their solid shapes and their white walls with everything that was avant-garde and modern in the new architecture of the time. Thus emerged Broner’s personal approach to work in Ibiza, one that has left its mark on a number of buildings on the island that it is possible to enjoy nowadays as cultural assets. On one hand, set in the marvellous setting of Dalt Vila, on the cliffs above sa Penya, there is Casa Broner, the house/museum where it is possible to take a stroll around the work of the renowned German architect, revisiting the steps that he and his wife, Gisela, took during the last years of their lives. To wander around its rooms is to relive the most personal moments of this couple who had such an influence on the cultural and artistic life of Ibiza in

With the great respect and responsibility inherent in extending part of the house designed by Broner, a listed building, the architect, Marc Tur Torres, heir to the first wellknown architects who arrived on the island such as Josep Lluis Sert and Broner, has developed a project that was suggested by the son of Rafael Tur, the owner of Ecodisseny, a company devoted to designing bio-climatic houses. By taking advantage of the way the house is oriented, of the walls and the terrain, a new project was created, one that was dedicated, serious and thorough, the heir to Mediterranean architectural tradition but which possesses modern lines and introduces natural materials, placing greater emphasis on those that are biological so that, as far as possible, it is an ecological home. With the pride of carrying on this heartfelt, artistic legacy left by Broner, the Tur Costas, along with their son and the architect, Tur Torres, gave shape to a project where they wanted to manifest their love and respect for quality architecture to bring life to an area of Jesús where there are many houses with gardens and green spaces. It is a notion of housing that seeks to connect with the natural surroundings and merge with Ibiza’s landscape as well as a golden opportunity to acquire firsthand knowledge of the way in which Broner’s legacy stays alive and up-to-date. FOR THE FINAL ISSUE OF IBIZA STYLE 2016 I THOUGHT IT FITTING TO FINISH MY 2016 COLLABORATION IN THE SAME WAY YOU WOULD FINISH A MEAL. COFFEE. PARA EL ÚLTIMO NÚMERO DE IBIZA STYLE 2016 PENSÉ QUE SERÍA APROPIADO TERMINAR MI COLABORACIÓN DE ESTE AÑO DE LA MISMA FORMA QUE LO HARÍA AL TERMINAR UNA COMIDA: CON CAFÉ. DIE LETZTE AUSGABE IBIZA STYLE 2016 UND MEINER DIESJÄHRIGEN ZUSAMMENARBEIT MÖCHTE ICH SO BEENDEN, WIE AUCH EIN GUTES MAHL ENDET: MIT KAFFEE.

biza, like many places, has it’s own take on coffee and it’s called Café Caleta. It also has an established toasting house called Cafés Ibiza. This family business has been running since 1958 when it was situated in the Barrio de la Marina. Here, they started out using a toaster ball with a capacity of only 10kg coffee. Today they proudly serve in a year over 18 million cups of coffee on the island! Ibiza today is a very different place than it was just a generation ago during the 40’s and 50’s. During this time the economic situation of the island was of absolute misery and scarcity and coffee, like many other commodities was restricted and controlled. To solve the problems of insufficient coffee, the former owner and founder of Cafés Ibiza, Vicente Tur had to buy bags of smuggled green coffee beans. When the state supplied coffee had run out, Vicente had to find a boat that carried merchandise and sailed close to the coast of Ibiza. Barges would leave Ibiza at night and sail to the merchant ships where the buying and selling of restricted goods would take place under a starry sky. The smuggled goods would be hidden around Ses Salinas or Playa Es Codolar for retrieval later, often by ladies in traditional costume who would hide the bounty under their dresses. So how did Café Caleta come into existence and did the smuggling of coffee influence or create the recipe? There are many myths and anecdotes of the origins of the recipe for Café Caleta, all believable and unbelievable! Some say that the drink was born from the smugglers, enjoying an alcoholic pick me up late at night whilst waiting to smuggle coffee. Another legend, which I wrote in my book, is that the fishermen of the bay of

Sa Caleta would invite the monks from the nearby monastery at Es Cubells to come and join them as they cooked their catch of the day. Wine was consumed with the meal by the fishermen, but not by the monks. So the fishermen devised a way of introducing the monks to alcohol without them knowing, and café Caleta was born! Whatever the origins of this delicious after dinner drink, it is well worth the effort to make it, and there really is no other way than to make it than with Café’s Ibiza coffee. Still being toasted on the island as it has been for decades. You can also find it theatrically served at the table in some restaurants on the island. The result is delicious, entertaining and very easy to make.

Was auch immer der Ursprung dieser köstlichen Kaffeespezialität war, man kann ihn nur mit dem Kaffee von Cafés Ibiza zubereiten, wie er schon seit Jahrzehnten auf der Insel geröstet wird. ut it were the words that came from my mouth when I was told the recipe I had to make a wine pairing to for this issue was Café Caleta. In the previous editions of Ibiza Style it wasn’t difficult to find a wine suiting to the recipes of Sid Shanti and write a nice piece about it. But because Sid has chosen the recipe of the fishermans coffee (the ibicenco vesion of the Irish coffee) I find myself in an impossible situation: Café Caleta is delicious but without wine! Unfortunately I must consider a detour and point you out a recipe for a typical Ibicenco dessert: the Greixonera! A kind of flan that comes amazingly paired with a delicious glass of sweet wine (look up the recipe online for the Greixonera). I have chosen a wine from over the border but we do stay on the Iberian Peninsula. We go to Portugal and I’m going to talk to you about the Adega Aneto from the Douro region. Adega Aneto started producing wine in 2001 by the inspiring hand of Francisco de Montenegro. The white wines of this winery are of absolute top quality. The aromas of aniseed are rather predominant in this wine, hence why the flower of this plant is depicted on the label.

I’m can go on and on about this wine, it’s that exciting, but I wanted to dedicate this piece to their dessert wine, the. I don’t usually like sweet, I hardly ever eat dessert and if I do, it’s because of the wine pairing. You can always get me excited for a good Sauterne; I will of course not say no to a little glass of Chateau Yquem, generally too expensive for any of us commoners. This wine from Portugal isn’t! An amazing top quality alternative for the Yquem lovers who don’t want to spend Yquem money. The Late Harvest 2010 Semillon is of a deep golden colour, it’s beautiful to look at (but not for too long of course). Aromas of honey and wild flowers hit our senses and with the first sip, your mouth is filled with dried fruits, apricots and a little nutty aftertaste. What a pleasure, delicious! Now that we’ve had the pleasure to enjoy dessert and this fantastic wine it’s time to get to the Café Caleta of Sid. If you still have to drive, don’t! Call a taxi. n

Köstlich! ooks and gin does not mean "cook in gin" or "gin in the chef" but rather, it is the new trend; a menu that, instead of being served with the appropriate wines, is served with gin creations. This requires the kind of communication between chef and bartender that usually takes place in a good restaurant between the chef and the sommelier. Particularly for bartenders, this is a new challenge. While they usually only adjust the way they mix cocktails to the taste of their clientele at the bar, now they have to prepare drinks that are a perfect match for the dishes created in the kitchen. This is the challenge bartenders set themselves at the series of events known as Gastromixology Nights, with which Gin Mare hopes to bring Mediterranean flair to rooftop bars in London, Madrid, Lisbon, Milan and New York. These events took place twice in August and September in an authentic Mediterranean setting that is hard to beat: on the Rooftop of ME Ibiza. In August Walter el Nagar set up his Barbershop restaurant for one night here (see also Close Up article page xxx). To go with his sixcourse menu head barman, Alvaro Martín, conjured up some new mixed drinks that were an outstandingly delicious complement to Walter's creations. El Quim de la Boqueria from Barcelona (see also our edition no.4 from July 2016) and Aitor Olabegoya, the Basque head chef from Beijing, (nominated Chef of the Year for four consecutive years in China) did the honours with an extravagant menu. We will do an extensive report at the end of September in the events section of our website (www.ibiza-style.com/en/category/events-en) about what was an undoubtedly even more exciting dinner and cocktail experiment. Gin Mare's ground-breaking concept was well received by all those who participated. The aim was to capture the purest essence of the Mediterranean in one of the first premium Spanish gins. And they managed do so, in the setting of an ancient 18th century hermitage close to the sea, where the distillery is located. That’s where Gin Mare was born. Gin Mare opens the way to a new category of gins with an innovative pan-Mediterranean concept that brings together the different cultures surrounding the sea as represented by their star botanicals such as: Arbequina olives, thyme, basil and rosemary. One of the sector’s leading brands, it is at the forefront of a worldwide revolution in being sold in more than 60 countries. On the island it is already inspiring chefs, who do not hesitate to use the brand when marinating their dishes. n

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 16 // HEART IBIZA

BOOGIE IN WONDERLAND CLOSING It has been a spectacular debut season for new concept Boogie In Wonderland, which brings a different party experience to HEART Ibiza every Friday, and September 16th sees it come to a conclusion with another exciting gathering. BIW promised a party that infused music and fashion with art and style inspired by the iconic New York parties of the 1970s, such as Studio 5 and Paradise Garage. It delivered that and a whole lot more, with performances from world famous bands of that era, DJs who pushed musical parameters for decades as well as some hot new and local talent on the decks. The final party will feature a very special, as yet unnamed guest alongside singing sensation Recardo Patrick and Polley Fey, who will both perform live, while DJs Aaron Mellor and Graham Sahara are offering their support for the international guests.

ground edge when they take to the DJ booth, dropping some of the finest house and disco beats to an eager capacity crowd on Friday night. September 16th is a night championing famous DJ double acts, as Heller & Farley also make a welcome appearance. The two DJs have been hugely influential both in their own right and as a duo, delivering numerous seminal tracks that have defined the early dance years. It’s a huge line up once again for Glitterbox and disco legend John Morales completes the Terrace team, while local resident Andy Baxter offers an alternative in El Salon. TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 20 // AMNESIA

TOGETHER CLOSING Tuesday night in Amnesia has seen Together build up an army of loyal fans from all over the world. With a bassheavy soundtrack giving clubbers in Ibiza a slightly different option musically, the concept created a niche for itself on the island’s highly competitive weekly schedule and resulted in numerous roadblocks throughout the summer. September 20th sees the season come to a fitting climax as the Main Room features a Chase & Status DJ Set, Andy C, Wilkinson and Novelist, while the Terrace sees the return of Hannah Wants alongside DJ EZ, Hector Couto and very special guest Disciples. TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 20 // PACHA

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 16 // SPACE

GLITTERBOX Glitterbox welcomes back Basement Jaxx to the Space terrace for yet another Ibiza 2016 performance. The duo, which has enjoyed remarkable commercial crossover success during its career, always manages to maintain that under-

MOSAIC Hands up if you were surprised by the announcement early in the season that Maceo Plex would be taking on Tuesday night in Pacha Ibiza? If you’ve witnessed any of the parties so far, you’ll know that the talented artist has taken to his new home like the proverbial duck to

water. Maceo Plex’s Mosaic has been a welcome addition not only to the Pacha schedule but also to the island, the chance to catch him play on a weekly basis has not been lost on the discerning clubbers that flock to or live in Ibiza. His recent ten-gig around the island marathon was a huge success, culminating in a roadblock at the club later that evening, and the weekly line-up of talent is consistently strong. On Tuesday, September 20th, the man himself is joined by Adam Beyer, Odd Parents and Alex Kennon in the main room, while in Prism there’s an Ellum Showcase featuring Danny Daze, Shall Ocin and Stephan Barnem.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 21 // DC10

PARADISE It seems ridiculous to conceive now, but there was a time when people believed that the earth was flat and that DC10 could only hold one party per week! Jamie Jones and his Paradise concept have changed this myth by consistently filing the famous underground venue every Wednesday. The front man is reason enough for Ibiza’s club kids to flock towards the old aircraft hanger on the edge of the runway, but the depth of guest talent every week would not look out of place at a two-day festival!

Wednesday, September 21st, is the latest incarnation of a party that has well and truly won the hearts of the Ibiza faithful and sees Jamie Jones B2B Joseph Capriati, John Digweed, Matador (Live), Daniel Bell, Detlef, Lauren Lane, Patrick Topping and Mark Jenkyns come together for what promises to another massive gathering. WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 21 // USHUAIA

SOLOMUN + LIVE Solomun + Live is a concept that was born from the successful Sunday night event, evolving to incorporate the island’s love for an outdoor party and some of the best locations on the island. The latest offering sees the talented artist head to Playa d’en Bossa and the poolside theatre that is Ushuaia Beach Hotel on Wednesday, September 21st, when Solomun will be joined on stage by Stephan Bodzin (live) and long time cohort H.O.S.H. The hugely popular performer has an ability to make even the largest open-air gig feel like an intimate club party, his recent Ibiza Town port takeover still fresh in the minds of everyone that had the chance to enjoy it. September might signal the start of the wind-down towards the end of the summer but with events like this one to look forward to, there’s no chance of taking the foot off the gas just yet! SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24 // BENIMUSSA PARK

ZOO PROJECT CLOSING PARTY Heading to San Antonio, dressing in the colours of your favourite animal and joining several hundreds of likeminded party people in the grounds of the old zoo has become something of a rite of passage for anyone heading to Ibiza for the first time, not to mention an annual

celebration of fantastic underground tunes in a unique party destination for those that have experienced it before. Ibiza 2016 has seen another big season for the Zoo Project, which offers a real festival vibe on a weekly basis and where its line-ups are very rarely shouted about; preferring to surprise clubbers with some of the finest local and international talent that never ceases to rock Benimussa. It’s time to release your inner beast once again before retiring it for the summer as Zoo Project gets set for its grand finale on Saturday, September 24th.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24 // OCEAN BEACH IBIZA

SOUL HEAVEN CLOSING PARTY, One of the surprise packages of recent summer seasons has been the Soul Heaven party in Ocean Beach Ibiza, although why we should be surprised – when one is a world famous label and the other a stunning poolside venue – is beyond us. There’s nothing like partying around a giant pool when some of the finest house music artists of the last two decades drop in and play some dope beats all afternoon. The house soundtrack is perfect for that daytime vibe and there are few places on the planet that enjoy the atmosphere that Ocean Beach Ibiza generates. Saturday, September 24,

sees the final edition of the pool party, welcoming back Grant Nelson as the final guest. The larger than life DJ/ producer has enjoyed a special relationship with the Ocean Beach Soul Heaven crowd, his ability to deliver a pulsating musical journey is the stuff of legend and he promises to give the popular party the send off it deserves. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24 // USHUAÏA

ANTS CLOSING PARTY As it’s our last party round-up for the summer, there are inevitably many finales to be highlighted; Saturday, September 24th sees Ushuaïa’s in-house underground party Ants say a final farewell to its colony. The men in black have delivered another fantastic summer run, filled with outstanding performances taking you from day to night as the party kicks off at one end of the outdoor arena before switching to the main stage. It’s a concept that has played a big part in the success of the event, encouraging fans to get in early and see their favourites up close and personal before they are elevated to the imposing main stage with its spectacular production. The final colony meeting sees resident favourites Andrea Oliva and UNER joined by Francisco Allendes, Kölsch DJ Set, Joris Voorn and Maya Jane Coles. It promises to be a fitting finale before the colony gets set for its winter tours. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25 // SPACA

SUNDAYS AT SPACE CLOSING PARTY After a slightly insensitive Sunday announcement at the start of the season that saw Space quickly, and rightly, change the name of its iconic party to Sundays At Space, it has been a fantastic

CARL COX THE FINAL CHAPTER CLOSING PARTY Normally reserved for lesser known events but we couldn’t help ourselves… All good things have to come to an end as they say, and while we don’t have to be happy about it, we do have to make sure we squeeze every last second of enjoyment from it. The much publicised end of the Carl Cox Music Is Revolution Space Ibiza residency is finally upon us, and what a monumental final chapter it has in store. As expected, Carl Cox will take care of la Discoteca all night long, an arena he has dominated for years, where he has delivered countless roof-raising performances and offered countless clubbers from all over the world a night they will never forget. There is one last chance to catch him before the venue and the DJ go their separate ways. The Terrace sees DJ Sneak, Nic Fanciulli and tINI offer an exciting alternative, while the Sunset Terrace features Popof b2b Julian Jeweil, DJ Callum (After Midnight), Andy Baxter and Ken Fan, while the Premier Etage features Clara Da Costa and Alex Arnaut. Eoin Smyth & Friends take over El Salon to complete a strong final offering for fans of the Tuesday night phenomenon.

final season. Traditionally, Sunday was one of THE days to be partying at the famous Ibiza club, the festival-like line up offered countless musical options across numerous rooms and Ibiza 2016 has seen that philosophy maintained. The last ever season of the famous club has witnessed some monumental musical battles and there promises to be another for the finale. In the Discoteca you will find Josh Wink, Steve Bug, Derrick Carter and Tensnake, while Do Not Sleep continues its domination of the Terrace with resident Darius Syrossian joined by two talented ladies – Ida Engberg and Anja Schneider. The sunset terrace sees Space fabvourites Derrick Carter and CJ Mackintosh hold court and there is a Jason Bye b2b Paul Reynolds to keep the locals happy. MONDAY SEPTEMBER 26 // AMNESIA

COCOON It’s not often that Sven Väth takes a night off from his beloved Cocoon residency in Amnesia so when he does, the team makes sure that the legions of fans that flock to the iconic Ibiza venue at the start of the week have plenty to keep them entertained. Monday, September 26th, sees Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano reunited in the Terrace for what promises to be a magical night where anything can and probably will happen! The duo has enjoyed some crazy parties previously and after what has been one

OPENLAB CLOSING OpenLab is no stranger to the music loving Ibiza public, having offered a fantastic musical option over the last few years on Ibiza and Formentera. More recently, it started hosting its own parties with great success, combining music with visuals for an immersive atmosphere. 2016 saw the party take up residency at HEART Ibiza on Thursday nights, one of the most forward-thinking and technologically advanced venues in the clubbing capital, where its ability to combine live performance with talented DJs and visual artists has proven hugely popular. Thursday, September 29th, sees the debut summer come to a fitting climax with a special guest (TBA) alongside residents Robert Miles and Andy Baxter. SUPERMARTXE CLOSING PARTY There’s nothing quite like the glamour and showmanship of Supermartxe, the Spanish-born party brand has made its name through lavish production and an unadulterated appetite for fun. Ibiza 2016 has seen the party take up residency on Saturday night in Privilege, where all of the usual antics and more returned, not to mention some very high profile DJ performances. Saturday, October 1st, brings its summer reign to a climax, but not without one last big bang. And who better to oversee the main room madness than firm favourite Chuckie, who returns to the booth joined by Yves V, Abelthekid, Alex Guerrero and Salva Di Nobles, while the Vista/ Superman features Manuel De Diego, Hugo

Sanchez and Joseph Leon. Expect the usual party antics of this mischievous night, a spectacular production in the world’s biggest club and an end of season atmosphere that is unforgettable as Supermartxe puts yet another successful Ibiza season to bed. SUNDAY OCTOBER 02 // SPACE

SPACE CLOSING PARTY It has been the bookend of the Ibiza summer season for 27 years, but in 2016, Space Ibiza as it was is set to close its doors for the very last time. It’s too easy to get nostalgic and misty eyed about it, there is no doubt that millions have cut their clubbing teeth in the iconic institution, but, as one famous tune that has been blasted over the huge system on countless occasions suggests, ‘time marches on never ending… ’It has been a big final season for the world famous club, with numerous sold out parties and DJs making the very most of the chance to play to that crowd one last time. For the big finale on Sunday, October 2nd, Space has invited many of its protagonists from its almost three decades; Carl Cox, Tale Of Us, Darius Syrossian, Steve Bug, Alex P and Brandon Block, David Morales, Roger Sanchez and Josh Wink, to name only a few of those giving it the send-off it deserves. Tickets are selling fast for this one so don’t hang about! WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 05 // PACHA

MY HOUSE CLOSING My House has been the focus for houseloving party people in Ibiza yet again this summer as Martin Solveig continued his

love affair with Pacha and Ibiza. The talented artist has been at the centre of countless iconic Pacha Ibiza parties over the years, and his solo residency has been a huge success. Having enjoyed a great deal of commercial crossover success throughout his career, he is one of the most popular international DJs and has a following around the world; a fact that is reinforced by the cosmopolitan crowd that flocks to the club every Wednesday to catch him and his guests. For the closing of the concept he will be joined by Shadow Child, Billy Kenny, Coco Cole and Danny Wade, while in the Funky Room you can find Angel Linde and Graham Sahara. SUNDAY OCTOBER 9 // PACHA

SOLOMUN + 1 CLOSING The last of the Pacha parties to close, Solomun + 1 delivers its final hurrah with the headliner taking over the booth all night long. It has become an annual finale for the popular party and gives Solomun the chance to show a wide range of musical muscles. Having spent the full season adapting his style to suit whichever guest appears alongside him, he takes the Pacha crowd on his own musical journey. Ibiza 2016 has seen numerous roadblocks on Sunday night as Solomun hosted a series of the hottest international artists in the repositioned DJ booth, creating some of the most talked about atmospheres of the summer. The close proximity between the DJ and the clubbers on the dance floor allows maximum interaction, resulting in a shared musical experience for all. October 9th is the last chance to

enjoy this unique party as the shutters finally come down.

MONDAY OCTOBER 10 // DC10

CIRCO LOCO CLOSING Details of this particular line-up are still under wraps at the time of writing, but if there is one thing that recent years have taught us about the Circo Loco closing party, it is to expect a football team full of talent across the three spaces in DC10. The fun inevitably kicks off in the garden, building steadily throughout the afternoon until it is packed front-to-back. The Terrace and the Club both offer fantastic alternatives, depending on how you prefer your party experience. This infamous bash has the ability to entice people back to the island for one last run at it before the season finally closes and clubbers all over the world plan their summer activity to ensure they can drop in celebrate one more time at the bastion of underground music. Keep your eyes peeled for the line-up, but be assured it will be a talent-packed assembly more than capable of sending Circo Loco off in style for another summer.

FEEL IBIZA n August 13 a new edition of Feel Ibiza was held at Pacha Barcelona featuring DJ Anna Tur as the main act. This monthly party, which features partners such as Ibiza Global Radio, Hierbas Familia Mari Mayans and Ibiza Style, has already become quite a reference point ever since Pacha Barcelona opened its doors a couple of years ago. What’s more, it continues to be a success with 2,500 people filling the club to experience those sensations so unique to the White Island. “Feel Ibiza represents the spirit of nightlife in Ibiza”, says Rubén Miró, the event’s promoter. “Our parties have got Ibiza-style decoration, seductive performances and gogo dancers in costumes covered in feathers and precious stones…In addition, the sound is pure Ibiza house music, very vocal and melodic, with a few touches of tech house. It’s a cocktail that works really well and it appeals to all sorts of people”. After the summer, Feel Ibiza is going on a tour that will visit the main Spanish cities (Madrid, Mallorca, Valencia, San Sebastian, Seville, Zaragoza…), and they have already been asked to take the party to a number of different international locations such as Rome, Naples, London and Croatia. There’s no doubt about it: Ibiza seduces both on and off the island. n

TOM CRANE AN ECLECTIC JOURNEY FROM PIRATE RADIO TO IBIZA GLOBAL. UN ECLÉCTICO VIAJE DESDE LA RADIO PIRATA HASTA IBIZA GLOBAL. EINE EKLEKTIZISTISCHE REISE VON PIRATE RADIO BIS IBIZA GLOBAL.

TOM IS A RESIDENT AT OCEAN BEACH AND BLUE MARLIN, AND IS BOOKED TO PLAY THE PIKES CLOSING PARTY IN OCTOBER.

n 2010, Tom travelled to Ibiza with 25 of his closest friends for what was supposed to be a week-long holiday. “My manager booked me to play at Blue Marlin,” Tom recalls. “I was really excited, but the owner of Blue Marlin – who is a good friend of mine now – said he knew nothing about the booking. I called my manager and eventually they let me play. After an hour the owner came back and said, right, I want you to be one of my residents.” Rather than flying back to London, Tom decided to remain on the island for the duration of the summer. The weekly slot at Blue Marlin was a start, but the money wasn’t enough to live on. “I’d just won the Best DJ in London Award twice,” Tom explains. “I had some good connections and luckily people gave me a shot. Jason Bull and Nick Reid from Hotel Es Vive helped me out. And Jürgen Bushe from Ibiza Style Magazine agreed to interview me when I was trying to make a name for myself. After the interview, Jürgen gave me the chance to play on Ibiza Global Radio. We got some good feedback and I’ve been doing the show ever since.” When Ocean Beach opened in 2012, Tom found yet another outlet for his diverse dancefloor sound. “These days, I’m working six days a week at Ocean Beach as their Musical Director,” Tom continues. “It’s not necessarily all house music there. Last Thursday, for instance, I didn’t play a single house track. I played reggae, garage and hip-hop, whereas I might play minimal techno for five hours at Blue Marlin.” This summer, Tom is also directing the musical output at STK, the chic new steakhouse located within the walls of the Corso Hotel & Spa in Marina Botafoch. “I book the DJs and play there twice a week.” Tom says. “The idea is to get people dancing on the tables. The other night I started playing Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye. When it got a bit busier I dropped Unlimited Touch and Earth, Wind & Fire. It’s really eclectic, very cool and very different.” One of reasons why Tom has such a diverse taste in music is his father, who worked in the music industry for 35 years. “My dad was a soul boy, a reggae boy,” Tom explains. “He’s sadly passed away now, but he worked at Warner Bros., Universal, and he also had his own label. He was one of the best A&R men around. He discovered UB40. The best advice he ever gave me was never to play a record unless it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I’m also very lucky because my dad left me all his vinyl when he passed away. I’m still playing his dub reggae 7-inches now!” n

I

¡Él descubrió a UB40!

STEVE MASSA THE COURTROOM BY DAY, IBIZA BY NIGHT. EL JUZGADO DE DÍA, IBIZA DE NOCHE. BEI TAG IM GERICHT – IBIZA IN DER NACHT.

t the age of forty, Italian lawyer Steve Massa started making regular weekend visits to Ibiza. “I was forty-years-old and starting to get tired,” Steve laughs. “Then I found my second youth! From July 15th to the end of August the courts in Italy are closed, so I can be with my family in Ibiza. The first two or three years, I was basically listening to the music, studying the situation, learning about the true soul of Ibiza. Trying to understand how to live on the island, but not like a tourist.” Five years ago, Steve started ibizabynight.net. Now a comprehensive online party guide, back then the site was almost like a personal blog chronicling his adventures. “That first year we had 10,000 visits,” Steve recalls. “This year we’ve had around 300,000 visitors in eight months. I have a fantastic team of friends who help me with the project and it’s increasing in popularity every year.” Steve’s love of music, as well as his passion for the island are the main driving forces behind the site. “It’s a website made by people that love Ibiza,” Steve concludes. “It’s not a commercial website. We don’t have sponsors or accept advertising. Of course, there are lots of wonderful websites in Ibiza, but only a few update their content throughout the year. We update everyday, even in the wintertime. I think this is why people are following us. And they also understand that we love the island and that for us Ibiza is not a commercial opportunity; it’s a love for life.” n

“Había cumplido cuarenta y comenzaba a sentirme cansado… No tenemos sponsors o anuncios.

SENSITIVITY TO INSPIRATIONAL SITUATIONS AND THE CREATION OF INNOVATIVE TECHNO. SENSIBILIDAD E INSPIRACIÓN A CARGO DE UNO DE LOS CREADORES DE TECHNO MÁS INNOVADORES. WENN AUS INSPIRATION INNOVATIVER TECHNO WIRD.

or the past two seasons, Israeli DJ/producer Guy Gerber held his Rumors parties at the Beachouse in Playa d’en Bossa. The event was about as about as underground as you can get here in Ibiza. There was no entrance fee and the line-ups were seldom announced until the last moment. Having grown to epic proportions – by word of mouth alone – the party was eventually closed down by the authorities, with 3,000 ravers spilling out onto the beach. Cue this season’s move to Destino, Pacha’s beautiful cliff top resort in Talamanca, where Rumors holds a new weekly residency. “Musically, it took me a few weeks to get the sound right at Destino,” Guy explains, “to realise the message I wanted to say. But by midJune I was in perfect sync with my surroundings.” Born near Tel Aviv, Guy spends his summers in Talamanca, within walking distance of Destino. “I don’t drive, but I like walking,” Guy continues. “From Talamanca, I can walk to Pacha, walk to the spa at the Gran Hotel, walk to the Fish Shack, walk to Destino. Most of my friends live here. The area has a neighbourhood vibe. I could be in a villa in the mountains, but in Talamanca I feel as though I’m actually living in Ibiza with the people, living a normal life, rather than being detached in some ivory tower. I think when you have a residency in Ibiza it’s essential that you actually live here.

You want to have the right people at your party. Not just random people that come for a week. You want the locals to come. But it’s hard to impress the locals!” Thankfully, making an impression is something Guy is rather good at. His DJ sets are as lush as they are accessible, but it’s his innovative techno productions that really set him apart from the majority of his peers. His Fabric 64 album, for instance, verges on genius. “There’s a lot good music out there,” Guy continues, “but I think people are a little bit too safe with their decisions. They are either trying to stay on top or get recognised. People are following trends. But I’m always thinking: ‘If I listened to this again in ten years time would I hate it?’ At the same time, it’s really important for me not to sound like anybody else. When I go into the studio sometimes I’ll be making stuff that could sound good, but if it reminds me of something else I’ll delete it.” Inspiration comes to artists in many different forms. But where Guy is concerned, being inspired is the easy part. “If something inspires me – some emotional situation – I will be more concentrated on what I’m doing,” he explains. “But after living on this planet for so many years I don’t look for a source of inspiration. Living this sort of lifestyle, there’s enough inspiration around. What really matters is how sensitive you are when listening to the things around you. That’s the most important thing.” n

SIGMA PLANET EARTH’S FOREMOST DRUM ‘N’ BASS DUO. EL DÚO DE DRUM ‘N’ BASS MÁS IMPORTANTE DEL MUNDO. DAS FÜHRENDE DRUM ’N’ BASS-DUO DES PLANETEN ERDE.

e caught up with Cam Edwards and Joe Lenzie, better known as Sigma, in late July, hours before they were due to perform at Amnesia. A lot of doors have opened up for the drum ‘n’ bass duo in the last few years after their singles ‘Nobody To Love’ and ‘Changing’ topped the Official UK Charts back in 2014. Collaborations with Paloma Faith, Rita Ora, and most recently Take That have established Sigma as a genuine household name. Primetime television performances have also become commonplace, with appearances on TFI Friday, The X Factor, and the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year show helping to amplify Sigma’s accessible drum ‘n’ bass message. “Opening the BAFTA TV Awards with Labrinth was probably the most surreal thing we’ve ever done,” Cam smiles. “The audience was packed with business magnates and media personalities like Lord Alan Sugar and Sir David Attenborough. It was a great experience, but also kind of weird seeing people like that watching you while you’re dropping a drum ‘n’ bass tune!” Earlier this summer, Cam and Joe looked as though they were about to register their third Number One single after collaborating with pop group Take That. Surprisingly, however, ‘Cry’ fell short of the top spot. “To launch a big single like that you need a big TV slot on the Graham Norton Show or The X Factor,” Cam continues. “But unfortunately the TV performances we had planned didn’t end up happening. If you don’t have that kind of TV exposure it’s hard to get the initial bump the single needs.” A recent change in the way the UK Charts are compiled may also have hindered the ascent of Sigma’s latest release, as the effectiveness of the music industry’s ‘on air on sale’ policy continues to divide opinion. “The charts have changed massively in the last six

months,” Joe explains. “You used to have a long lead up of presales going into your first week of release to allow marketing buzz to develop, but now as soon as people hear about the record they can buy it. Streaming has also changed things massively and music that wouldn’t necessarily have been as big a couple of years ago is doing really well.” “‘Controller’ by Drake reached number two in the charts,” Cam adds. “It wasn’t even a single. We’re not trying to hate on Drake – we love his tunes – but the charts don’t really reflect sales anymore, it’s all about streaming. If you’re a big artist like Drake, Rihanna or Calvin Harris it’s a good thing, but if you’re an up-and-coming band and you don’t have that massive fan base it makes it a lot more difficult to get that top ten spot.” Interestingly, Sigma’s next assault on the charts may (or may not) feature superstar singer/songwriter Craig David. “Craig is one of the nicest guys in the industry and his outlook is refreshingly positive,” Cam concludes. “We’ve been in the studio with him, but at the moment we’re not sure if those tracks will ever see the light of day. All we can say is that we’re interested in working with as many of the people we respect as possible… and Craig David is definitely one of them.” n

MAYA JANE COLES TECHNO’S MOST ARTISTIC STAR ON CREATING AND PROTECTING HER OWN UNIQUE UNDERGROUND AESTHETIC. LA ESTRELLA MÁS ARTY DEL TECHNO UNDERGROUND NOS HABLA SOBRE CREAR Y PROTEGER SU IMAGEN E IDENTIDAD. DIE GRÖSSTE KÜNSTLERIN DES TECHNO ÜBER IHRE GANZ PERSÖNLICHE UNDERGROUND-ÄSTHETIK

ne of the most eye-catching billboard designs of Ibiza 2016 has to be Maya Jane Coles’ ANTS campaign, which features Maya ordering drinks in an eerie film noir barroom. It’s an image that evokes sci-fi memories of Ridley Scott’s 1982 cult classic, Blade Runner. “Ushuaïa wanted to do something a bit artier this summer,” Maya explains. “I never usually fly abroad for a shoot; it takes so much time out of my schedule. But because the concept was so strong, I thought, okay, I’ll fly to Berlin for this one. The couple that shot it, Chloé Claverie and Nick West, have worked with Kanye West. They’re big time photographers in the commercial world.” The aforementioned ANTS shoot wasn’t Maya’s creative proposition, but more so than ever before she is taking a controlling interest in the way she’s depicted on the page. “The image has to match the music,” Maya continues. “Dark and mysterious, that’s my vibe. That’s why I work with people who are goth-inspired. When I was younger, I’d end up in so many situations where the photographer would do a quick Google search and come to the wrong conclusion about how I wanted to be portrayed. If I do find myself in that situation now I’m quite good. The photographer can always get something, as long as they’re not forcing me to do something ridiculous that I feel uncomfortable with. I remember one fashion shoot where they brought in floral leggings

They hadn’t really done their research.” A true artist in every sense of the word, Maya’s unique underground aesthetic is totally self inspired. She paints, she draws and even her tour visuals are her own sketch works, which are then animated by her girlfriend who is a graphic designer. “If I’m killing time on a plane I’ll just draw,” Maya smiles. “I always keep a sketchbook with me when I’m touring. Then when I get home I’ll scan my images and edit them in Photoshop. That’s how all of my release artwork is made. It’s not just about the music for me; I want everything I produce to be personal. I could get someone else to design it, but I like to know I did it all myself.” Three years after the release of her acclaimed debut album Comfort, Maya is now ready to drop a brand new double album, which will hit the digital shelves later this year. As you might expect, the music and the graphic artwork is all her own work. “It’s 24 tracks, plus a few bonuses,” Maya explains. “As much as I love making 125bpm, four to the floor tracks, I get a lot more satisfaction writing music that you can listen to anytime. The kind of music that stays with you for life, like Massive Attack and Portishead. For that reason, Disc One has been designed for home listening; the second is more club stuff. It’s always difficult to describe exactly what it sounds like, but I definitely think it’s more mature than my first album.” n

PATRICK TOPPING THE PARADISE FAVOURITE WHO CREATES TECH-HOUSE BOMBS. UN FAVORITO EN PARADISE Y CREADOR DE AUTÉNTICAS BOMBAS TECH-HOUSE. DER PARADISE-LIEBLING MIT DEN TECH-HOUSE-GRANATEN.

7-year-old Patrick Topping first started partying in Ibiza in 2008. There were times when he felt temped to move to the island permanently, but in the end he chose to remain in Newcastle, England to sharpen the quality of his productions. “I’ve never been an Ibiza worker,” Patrick explains as we convene on the Sun Deck of the Corso Hotel. “I considered it, especially in 2010 when my best mate was living here. But in the end I decided it would be a better use of my time to make music at home rather than partying in Ibiza. In hindsight, I’m so glad I decided to concentrate on my productions. I made so much progress during those three summers, getting my head down and learning how to produce.” Fast forward to 2013, and Patrick’s studiousness was already beginning to pay off. His debut EP ‘Walk On’ was picked up by Hot Trax, who took an educated gamble on the talented unknown. That summer, Patrick also played his first Ibiza gig, performing at DC10 for Jamie Jones. The following year, Patrick was invited back to Paradise, this time as a resident, where he played four times in what is now considered his breakthrough season. “When I came back to Ibiza in 2014, they put me in Ocean Drive,” Patrick laughs. “All I’d experienced up until that point was San Antonio, Playa d’en Bossa and the clubs. I’d never really been anywhere else. When I saw Ocean Drive, I was like, wow, what is this! It was such a novelty seeing all the DJs checking in. Ever since then I’ve fallen in love with the Marina and I’ve been booking hotels here ever since.”

By 2015, Patrick was constantly on the road, festival hopping from Mexico to Detroit to Australia. In the studio he was just as busy, releasing massive tunes on Truesoul and Relief Records, which added to his growing list of Beatport hits. Now one of the most in-demand underground DJs on the international dance circuit, Patrick’s decision to concentrate on his productions when he could have been partying in Ibiza has most definitely paid off. “It’s been a gradual rise,” Patrick explains humbly. “In the beginning Jamie started playing my tracks. Then he signed ‘Any Amounts’ to Hot Creations. After that I scored a gig at Paradise. Then I became a Paradise resident. Now I’m trying to establish myself at places like elrow. In the future I want to step up to the next level, although at the moment I don’t know exactly what that is!” One thing that isn’t open to any doubt is that dance music’s next generation can learn a lot from Patrick’s story. “A lot of my mates are upand-coming producers,” Patrick concludes, “but I always say: ‘Don’t do the summer in Ibiza. Stay at home and concentrate on your music.’ From my experience it’s the right thing to do. The main route to getting gigs now is production, which means coming out here and partying is just counterintuitive.” n

Dann signte er „Any Amounts“ an Hot Creations.

Many of the world’s top DJs end up courting a state of wellness when the lifestyle finally catches up with them. House music starlet Hannah Wants, on the other hand, has always been passionate about health and fitness. “I’ve played football since I was six years old,” Hannah explains. “I used to play for Aston Villa Ladies, Leicester City Ladies, England Under17s, England Under-19s and England Under-23s. I was a striker. When I played for my country I was the quickest female in the whole England set up and so sometimes I’d be placed on the wing to utilise my speed. “I reached a good level, but I actually had to quit professional women’s football to focus on my DJ career. I was getting in from DJ gigs at 6am in the morning, then travelling on the coach to away games around the country. In the end I made the decision to quit football and follow my music dream.” Hannah’s music dream started to become reality in 2010, when she relocated to Ibiza to spend the summer working in San Antonio. “I was in my final year of university,” Hannah continues. “I had a few local gigs back in the UK, but nothing was really happening. So I thought I’d try and get the ball rolling in Ibiza.” That summer proved to be a pivotal point in

Hannah’s career. She won multiple DJ competitions at Viva workers bar and played her first ever superclub gig at Es Paradis. “The event was called GLAS,” Hannah continues. “The headline DJ cancelled and Es Paradis called me up. I was actually in bed, but I quickly grabbed my stuff and ran down to the venue.” After impressing at Es Paradis, Hannah’s career quickly entered a phase of exponential growth, which has seen her skyrocket to the summit of the scene. Five years later and headline gigs at Amnesia and Ibiza Rocks have become the norm. But Hannah hasn’t forgotten about the lessons she learned in her first summer here on the island. “In 2010, I actually put on weight,” she laughs. “When I got home my mum was like, ‘What’s happened to you!?’ I definitely didn’t pay too much attention to my health that year. When I came back to the island in 2011, the first thing I did was join a gym. These days I try to eat as sensibly as possible, which is always difficult when you’re passing through airports. And I have to pick my parties. I’m not going to lie, I do like to party, but I’m certainly not a crazy ass DJ. If I have a day off after a show I know I can party then. As long as you’re organised and sensible it is possible to survive the DJ lifestyle by finding the right balance.” n WWW.HANNAHWANTS.COM...

DINOSAUR JR – „GIVE A GLIMPSE OF WHAT YER NOT“

(Jagjaguwar)

For more than a decade, Dinosaur Jr. have been active again in the here and now in their legendary founding line-up. Not only is the trio thus more consistent over time than in the pioneering days of the late 80s, but with album number four the scales tip in favour of the present in terms of output too. The memory is loud and clear: with their self-titled broadside of a musical début, “You’re living all over me”, and the brilliant stroke of songwriting genius, “Bug”, J. Mascis, Murph and Lou Barlow cemented a monumental indie rock work which ought to influence all subsequent generations. After a long separation, the reunion came about in 2005 and since then the trio has brought out one convincing album after another. So, what makes “Give a Glimpse...” different from its three predecessors? The already high level has climbed a new notch with songs like “Tiny”, the rocking “Goin Down” or the delicately-sad “Be a Part” ranking among the very best that Dinosaur Jr. have ever brought to the people. If only everything in life could be as simple as the loosely reliable smoothness with which Mascis gilds his solos.

Was „Give a Glimpse ...“ von den drei Vorgängern unterscheidet?

BEGINNER – „ADVANCED CHEMISTRY“

(Vertigo)

Beginner are back: One of the biggest, most successful and most influential hip-hop acts made in Germany are back with a new album. Over 20 years ago, when they still went by the name of Absolute Beginner, the guys from Hamburg (or to be more precise from ‘Eimsbush’, as they called their ‘Bronx’ Eimsbüttel) belonged to the spearhead of ultra-trendy rap in this country. Songs such as “Liebes Lied” or “Hammerhart” have become real classics. Following the album “Blast Action Heroes”, the Beginners’ activities as a band slowly tailed off in favour of solo careers, at the forefront of which was, of course, Jan Delay. First came the live comeback in 2011. Then, in June of this year, came “Ahnma”, the acclaimed single. Now there’s “Advanced Chemistry”, a comeback album which takes its name from the legendary hip-hop group from Heidelberg. It offers not only the usual multi-layered tracks, but also lots of guest stars such as Gzuz, Megaloh and Samy Deluxe. And, with Dendemann, also one of the best rappers, whose legendary duo, EinsZwo, (one hears rumours) could be about to stage the next big reunion thing.

LED ZEPPELIN – „THE COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS“

(Atlantic/Swan Song)

Granted - the last few years haven’t been exactly quiet when it comes to Led Zeppelin. The by now rightfully celebrated remastered versions of all their albums – elaborately reworked and supplemented under the aegis of mastermind, Jimmy Page – have become a gigantic, media-accompanied success. But anyone who thought that that really was the last word when it came to all things Zep is fooling themselves. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean there’s a reunion in the offing; that appears more than ever in the distant future. No, this time the focus is on, among others, the longbelieved lost BBC sessions from 1969; ones that have attained an almost mythical status among fans. Among the gems here are the only ever recorded performance of “Sunshine Woman” and versions of “Communication Breakdown” and “What Is And What Should Never Be”. In an interview in Guitar World, Jimmy Page said: “The ‘BBC Sessions’ show in graphic detail just how organic the group was”. “LED ZEPPELIN was a band that would change things around substantially each time it played… We were becoming tighter and tighter, to the point of telepathy.” You can, however, keep secretly dreaming of a reunion.

What Is And What Should Never Be”.

What Is And What Should Never Be".

ROISIN MURPHY – „TAKE HER UP TO MONTO“

(PIAS/Rough Trade)

She is, and remains, the most unconventional, ambitious and fearless dance floor philosopher around nowadays: up until 2002 Roisin Murphy performed her very own version of the thinking man’s dance floor music as part of the brilliant Moloko, setting down in pop history such stone classics as “The time is now” or “Sing it back”. For a long time, the Irish singer has also been acknowledged as a solo artist, garnering as much praise as she did when playing with the band. Her latest release is called “Take her up to Monto” and the title refers to an old Dubliners’ song in which they sang about the city’s red light district. On first hearing she is a long way away from such traditional roots; however, stylistic boundaries are as thoroughly alien to this singer as ever. In “Pretty Gardens” she swirls through green spaces, “Thoughts Wasted” sounds like PJ Harvey on a melancholic evening in 80s disco and “Lip Service” suddenly comes round the corner with a rumba from Señor Coconut’s trunk of 7’’ singles. “Ten Miles High” sounds like a warped version of The Human League from their “Travelogue” era. Anything but boring and conventional: it’s a maxim to which Roisin stays casually true, while never sounding strained or artistically pompous. A super album for disco explorers.

It’s a number that you should let melt in your mouth: 71. In words: seventy one. We’ve now reached that many releases of what is one of, if not THE most legendary dance compilations of all. Every three months, the Kontor label presents the latest tracks, the hottest tips, the best horses in the stable on three CDs. 60 club hits are, of course, once again represented, including some previously unpublished, exclusive tracks. All of it boiled down into one rich DJ mix that has emerged this time at the hands of residents, Markus Gardeweg and Jerome, ably assisted by HouseKaspeR. Together there’s a whopping four hours of dance music including Robin Schulz feat. Akon with the HUGEL remix of “Heatwave”, Swanky Tunes & Going Deeper with “Drownin”, the one and only Scooter with “Mary Got no Lamb” and the dance-floor rousing “Don’t Let Me Down“ by The Chainsmokers feat. Daya. That number again? You’re welcome: 71.

et again in summer, the agro-tourism hotel, Atzaró, became a focal point for the most innovative art. The 8th edition of Urban In Ibiza, the big event of urban culture on the island, enabled us to have a glimpse of works by artists such as Inkie, Ben Allen, Miss Van, Kenor, Okuda, Nick Walker, Mau Mau and Ben Eine over two weeks. Under the banner of Norte & South this year’s edition exhibited two visions face-toface; that of the Montana Colours Gallery in Barcelona, a more ‘veteran’ “south” with artists from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, France and Italy; and that of the Westbank Gallery in London, which featured almost exclusively British artists and some works by Dutch, German and French artists, including the dual sculpture by Schoony that was the event’s emblem. The soundtrack comprised the exquisite deep house and the captivating voice of Evika Blue & The Sound Thieves, before Melon Bomb’s well-known Scott Gray took over with his lively funky house rhythms while the sun was going down over the hills. One of the most memorable moments was a hugely enjoyable interactive live art performance at the hands of the children present who, using water pistols, made Marilyn Munro (in a bathing suit created by Lucas Milá) appear on a white canvas. All in all, it was an inspiring event that turned one of the most charming locations on the island into the epicentre of creativity and the artistic avant-garde. n

Zu den denkwürdigsten Momenten des Abends gehörte die Live Art Performance von Marilyn Monroe (im Badeanzug von Lucas Milá), der Kinder mit farbigen Wasserpistolen eine Leinwand beschießen ließ. hen three of the White Isle’s most renowned and aspirational names join forces to host a joint anniversary party, you know you are in for a treat. So naturally we couldn’t wait to see what surprises the night had in store when we attended Ibiza Style magazine and Casa Colonial’s 1001 Nights themed birthday bash on August 7th. Celebrating 10 and 15 years of success respectively, the effort and attention to detail Jürgen Bushe, Gunter Becker and Wolfgang Lettner had put into creating a magical backdrop for a night of delicious food and drinks, enchanting entertainment and great company was evident from the moment we ascended Casa Colonial’s tree-lined driveway. Rated as one of the most beautiful venues on the island year after year – and topping the wedding wish list of many a bride – the eatery had been transformed into Scheherazade’s playground for the occasion. uando dos de los nombres más reconocidos y ambiciosos de la Isla Blanca unen sus fuerzas para organizar una fiesta de aniversario conjunta, sabes que será algo grande. Die Freunde von LAW Gin präsentierten das Beste ihrer G&T Kreationen. the lush courtyard gardens of the eatery into a truly magical oasis. A snake charmer carrying a huge white python was roaming the space daring brave revelers to hold the magnificent creature, while a belly dancer with golden wings and clad in a glittering beaded costume mesmerized the crowd with her enticing moves. Food stalls invited guests to feast on a selection of vegan dishes and indulgent hot dogs, while our friends from LAW Gin mixed refreshing G&T infusions and treating us to the most delicious ‘pikante’ gin creation made with ginger and fresh black pepper. Bindis and intricate glitter face paint, as well as henna art was on offer to help guests get into the spirit of the night. As hosts of the evening, Jürgen and Wolfgang were busy talking to the many friends and well-known local faces that had turned out for the celebrations, many making the effort to dress up in elaborate costumes inspired by the Arabian short stories of 1001 Nights. However, they kindly took a minute to talk to us over a crisp class of champagne. “We met 15 years

ago when Casa Colonial first opened. I have always loved this place and they have been clients, as well as good friends, of Ibiza Style since the beginning. So I’m very happy that we can celebrate the anniversaries together,” Jürgen told us. Wolfgang added, “To reach 15 years feels great. It doesn’t even seem that long ago, time has gone so quickly. But if you love what you do, time flies. Most of the staff have been with us for around ten years or longer, so we are like a small family – and a very happy family.” Returning to the party, the night had several more surprises in store. An ambient oriental live music band wowed us with covers of rock classics like Pink Floyd’s Brick In The Wall and Papa Was A Rolling Stone by The Temptations, while a gymnast dazzled the audience with incredible physical contortions. The old adage of ‘If you’re going to do something, do it well’ popped into our mind and seemed apt to describe Ibiza Style and Casa Colonial’s anniversary party as well as their successes past, present and future. Congratulations! n

¡Enhorabuena! n
