BUSINESS MANAGER’ S

REPORT

From Lou Antonellis Business Manager / Financial Secretary IBEW Local 103

Brothers and Sisters, As we settle into the fall season, we do so with a new Mayor of the City of Boston. IBEW Local 103 congratulates Michelle Wu for her solid victory, and looks forward to supporting her and working closely with her administration, and the incoming City Council, to strengthen Boston’s working class. I can’t help but be inspired by our team’s tremendous efforts during the electoral season. We have more work to do and tough fights ahead of us, but we are well prepared and positioned to take them on. We have the best ground game in politics, and our efforts and our outreach are second to none. Some notable wins for Local 103 endorsed candidates include Boston at-large city councilors Michael Flaherty, Ruthzee Louijeune and long-time union member and advocate, Erin Murphy, as well as Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui, new Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and new Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson. We congratulate all our allies, we thank them for their hard work up to this point, and we stand ready to collaborate toward a better Boston! IBEW Local 103 is ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work — today and every day.

veterans reentering the workforce (page 11), all while expanding our operations through a brand new IBEW Local 103 office in Wilmington, MA (page 4). And, after long and fruitful careers, full of adventures building our city’s skyline and laughs with our fellow brothers and sisters, IBEW Local 103 was pleased to honor our newest retirees at a dinner celebration at the union hall. We’re thrilled to know that some of our closest friends are entering the next, exciting chapter of their lives with the security of a strong union pension, and thank them for their many contributions to our union over the years. This is what IBEW Local 103 is all about. Showing up for each other, for our families and for our community is what we do best. Let’s get to work! Fraternally, Lou Antonellis Business Manager/Financial Secretary

We’re building brand new fire stations for firefighters and first responders in Woburn and Mattapan (page 7). We’re launching coalitions to further support our own members, and other building trades workers on their paths to recovery from substance abuse (page 8). We’re raising money to support military

NEW WILMIN GTON OFFICE

IBEW Local 103 is thrilled to announce the opening of our new satellite union office in Wilmington, MA! Located at 21 Concord Street, the office will replace the former office in Woburn, providing much more space and allowing us to expand our regional operations. Union members, elected leadership, friends, and city and state officials joined us earlier this month for the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We’re thrilled to open our new office in the Town of Wilmington, and to work even closer with the community there,” said Business Manager/Financial Secretary, Lou Antonellis. “IBEW Local 103 is committed to providing local families with worldclass training, quality wages, and benefits. This office adds capacity to achieving that vision in a tangible way, and reflects the fortitude of our union even in tough times.”

Thanks to a new partnership with the renowned Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (BFIT), Local 103 members can now apply both field experience and course work toward the completion of an Associate’s Degree of Science. Participants will receive 36 credits towards the BFIT Engineering Technology and Renewable Energy Technology degree, about 50% of the credits required for the degree. This is an incredible opportunity to further your career while receiving credit for the training you’ve already completed. Participants can complete the remaining degree requirements over a two-year period at a 40% discount, taking as little as one course at a time. The majority of courses will be online, and required labs will be fulfilled at the IBEW Local 103 campus in Dorchester. This new partnership will allow IBEW Local 103 members to further hone their craft, to gain a unique and more robust understanding of an increasingly critical facet of our trade (renewable energy), and earn college credentials that will expand career opportunities.

As the US works towards renewable energy and sustainability, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 105% employment growth for solar energy (photovoltaic) installations and 96% growth for wind turbine technicians by 2026. IBEW Local 103 and the Boston JATC are proud to already be leading the way in green technology training, and this partnership will further ensure that our union is ready to meet the workforce needs of the future. HEADERPARTNER PROUD OF THE MASSBTC RECOVERY COALITION On September 30, IBEW Local 103 was proud to join U.S. Secretary of Labor, Martin J. Walsh, Massachusetts Building Trades recovery leaders and allies at the kickoff event for MassBTC’s Recovery Coalition. The Massachusetts Building Trades Council (MassBTC) launched the new coalition for MA construction workers struggling with substance abuse and addiction. It creates a free-of-charge network of support and resources designed to aid in long term recovery. The coalition also aims to break the stigma that surrounds addiction and often bars those who need it from seeking help.
