Washington Mall’s Stylish New Businesses

Several new businesses have brought a touch of panache to one of the busiest shopping areas in Hamilton.

Hair care businesses Certified Crowned Experience and Major League Barbershop, clothing, and goods store Holidae, as well as commercial furniture company iWork, have played their part in a retail resurgence at Washington Mall over the past few months.

Holidae

On the ground floor of the Mall, is this new business specialising in high-quality clothing, home goods and accessories.

Owners Shannon and Lindsey Philpott, who had enjoyed success through pop-up shops and wholesale with their BermuniTees brand, aimed for an American look but maintained the island touch with Bermuda-themed products.

In an eight-month design and construction project, they installed luxury vinyl plank flooring and accent lighting.

“We wanted to have a clean and minimal look that was also elevated and bright,” Shannon Philpott says.

“We wanted a space where our products could shine, and our customers would feel welcome and happy to be there.”

A natural colour palette, with neutral flooring, white walls and black steel accents combine with white solid surface fixtures and white oak finishes.

A steel frame wall was built to create storage space and an office for design work.

Features include a “man bench”: a comfortable seat by the window for the guy whose girlfriend is shopping.

The store opened in November 2023. “Business so far has been great,” Philpott says. “We have been pleasantly surprised with how consistent sales have been. We are happy to be a part of the retail resurgence in the mall with other new businesses opening up.”

Certified Crowned Experience

This the latest venture of entrepreneur and beautician Samaela CannonierDarrell, who previously operated out of a small shop in St George’s.

Cannonier-Darrell has created a minimalistic yet luxurious vibe in her new location.

“We wanted to make sure that people are comfortable and feel special getting our unlimited attention while they are getting beautified,” she says.

The colour code is “black and gold everything, with pops of ivory”. That rich, plush atmosphere is rounded out by leather chairs with gold accents, velvet furniture and intricate mirrors and lights. There are light colours for the walls to complement the furniture and dark floor, while plants help keep the place fresh.

The new space, on the outside balcony of the Mall, is 800 square foot – almost twice as big as the previous home in the East End, which has allowed CannonierDarrell to add a spa room and staff room.

Converting an empty shell into a salon

Holidae

was a five-month project involving major plumbing work and woodwork.

“Our clients love it,” she says. “They come and hang out here and eat their lunch even when they don’t have appointments!”

The location has proved popular. “We wanted to be more central and accessible to our clients,” Cannonier-Darrell says. “Our St George’s location was always busy, but lunch-break drop-ins were not as possible as almost all of our clients work or live towards and past town.”

Major League Barbershop

Located on the opposite side of the balcony this barbershop provides the yang to Crowned’s yin. Owner Kelvin Vargas, from the Dominican Republic, is a huge fan of baseball – an inescapable fact the moment you walk through the door.

Dominant dark red and navy blue

colours reflect the Major League Baseball logo, while clients can enjoy sports on TV as they get a trim.

Sharp lighting and minimalistic paintwork add up to a no-nonsense vibe, but the pale wooden flooring panels help keep things light.

Black comfortable chairs, silver lines and classic wood surfaces add up to a clean and fresh ambience.

“We didn’t want it to be too heavy,” Vargas says. “When you come here, we want you to focus on the barber and what we do.”

Vargas did much of the renovation work himself to keep costs down and it took about six months to complete. “It broke my back but it’s all right!” he jokes.

Wife Chantel insisted on combining the baseball theme with an island vibe, which explains why orange and grey –the colours of Vargas’s beloved Houston

Astros – were overlooked in favour of dark red.

Vargas worked for a barbershop and salon since arriving in Bermuda about eight years ago but decided to go it alone for this project.

“There was a lot of fear before we started,” he says. “People were saying don’t do it, don’t do it – but we did it anyway and I’m so glad we did!”

Washington Mall’s foot traffic has been a big asset. “It’s been a good location for us – a lot of people just walk in,” Vargas says.

Glamour Meets Function: Bacardi’s Mezzanine Makeover

The Mezzanine expansion at Hamilton’s iconic Bacardi Building is every bit as spectacular and stylish as you might imagine.

Workspaces and the general work environment were upgraded and sprinkled with glamour in the major renovation project at the beverage giant’s global headquarters on Pitts Bay Road.

Spread over two floors, the 10,000-square feet development effectively serves as an extension of the luxurious 1862 Bar area, and it saw a host of improvements to private offices and the creation of free seating areas, meeting space and a dazzling new boardroom.

Bacardi undertook the project with the aim of improving morale and productivity by increasing interaction among its employees, or “primos” – the Spanish word for cousin – as they are known at the company.

As such, designers at Planning Factory Bermuda were tasked with creating a harmonic and cohesive working environment and underlining the building’s status as a “great place to work”.

They appear to have done this in spades.

Workstations and offices have been modernised; each is designed to be functional with a sit-to-stand desk allowing for modern-day work style, while breakout areas and informal areas have also been created.

Colours are warm and bright: a continuation of the 1862 Bar area but suitable for a workspace; neutrals remain the foundation but accents of eucalyptus and gold inlay bring a gentle touch of extravagance.

Lindsay Barnett, the creative director at Planning Factory Bermuda, says: “In all of our designs, Planning Factory adds a residential element, that gives even the most corporate atmospheres a feeling of warmth and place.

“We like to create spaces that people want to be in. This area was intended to be an extension of our award-winning

1862 Bar area design, a functional workspace but also one that is inviting, collaborative, welcoming and stylish.

“It is important to us to maintain the historical relevance of the building, along with displaying Bacardi’s extensive art collection.”

The new Boardroom takes its name from the flagship brand Grey Goose.

“We were able to customise this space to reflect Grey Goose’s emphasis of being naturally tasteful,” Barnett explains.

Nods to Grey Goose include indigo wavy wooden floors, crystal martini glasses, Grey Goose bottle display and the ceiling treatment.

Barnett adds: “The brand’s personality of being effortlessly stylish, joyfully luxurious, seriously playful, timeless and emotionally warm shows up in real life

in this on-brand boardroom.”

There’s also a pergola meeting area which is custom-designed and planned for multi-functionality. The pergola has rotating slats that close for privacy and with two pockets doors, allowing it to serve as a semi-private space for informal, small meetings.

A giant mural, a Bacardi family treasure which has adorned the Bermuda HQ for more than 50 years, is the centrepiece to the Mezzanine.

Felix Ramos’s artwork – which serves as an ode to Bacardi’s Cuban homeland – was put in storage while the 1862 Cocktail Bar was constructed three years ago. Measuring 37 feet long and 15 feet high, it took 20 people to lift it back on to display.

The column surrounds in front of the

mural have become a focal point for the new design, with stylish object d’art, books and Bacardi archives showcased in the area.

Energy efficiency has been improved throughout the building with a modern HVAC system, lighting and work equipment.

Fortitude Re’s chic expansion on the waterfront

In early 2020, Fortitude Re, a rapidly growing reinsurance firm based in Bermuda, embarked on a modernisation project at an elite Hamilton waterfront property, Chesney House.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic putting the makeover on hold, the company continued to expand, eventually doubling its office space to occupy the entire top floor of the building. This allowed it to accommodate its growing staff and continue its growth trajectory.

Chesney House, with its glamorous views of the water and prime location in the heart of Bermuda’s reinsurance hub is the perfect place for Fortitude Re’s expansion.

Founded in 2017, Fortitude Re is a leading provider of reinsurance solutions with $102 billion in general and separate account insurance reserves, administering more than 4 million insurance policies.

Fortitude Re wanted its island office to align with the style of its offices in Jersey

City and Nashville.

The Commercial Interiors Group incorporated a Bermuda element into the standards from their other offices, lightening up the dark finishes to better fit the local aesthetic and culture.

This was done by using fully petrified Scandinavian green moss and natural light oak finishes, as well as oak storage towers around the white workstations. Sky blue tones in the café and banquettes add to the island feel.

A slightly dramatic element is introduced through dark charcoal accents and darker wood finishes. The 9,000 square feet top floor boasts sloping ceilings which are as high as 13 feet in some areas – a luxury by Bermuda’s standards, which helps ensure the workers don’t feel closed in.

They’ve also turned the roof’s dormers into break-out spaces for two- or threeperson huddle rooms where staff can meet away from the open plan office.

As with any open plan office, the break-out spaces help provide privacy and a suitable environment for Zoom calls.

The Hamilton waterfront area, with its proximity to upmarket stores and restaurants such as Miles Market, Harry’s at the Waterfront and The Cloud at the Waterfront, has proven very popular with leading reinsurance firms.

Construction on the remodel began in late 2022 and finished in the first half of 2023, despite pandemic-related hurdles with procurement and supply chains.

Latte’s: Bermuda’s newest coffee retreat

Anyone looking for a break from the westbound traffic at the end of a long day might find a new oasis at Latte’s Coffee & Pastries.

The latest addition to Bermuda’s café scene is designed for guests to relax, have fun or work remotely while enjoying refreshments – and boasts an outdoor

area to make the most of the Bermuda sunshine.

It’s the creation of Lynn and Martin Hassell, owners of the construction firm Hasco, which has a home improvement store next-door.

“My husband and I love visiting coffee shops in our travels,” Lynn Hassell says.

“We thought that opening one in Bermuda where we live would be a fun project. We wanted a place where people could hang out, spend time with friends and family and enjoy a refreshment and light snack or dessert.”

With coffee shops increasingly popular in busy hubs across the island

such as Hamilton, Latte’s stands out from the crowd because of its location on Chapel Road, Paget.

Customers can call for a snack and caffeine boost on their way to and from town, or plan for a longer stay – it’s open until 7pm or later Monday to Friday and holds karaoke nights on Wednesdays.

During the day, it’s also proving a handy spot for remote workers to get on with their jobs from the comfort of a wicker egg chair.

The shop has two rooms: a reception area featuring a busy shop counter, and a lounge around the corner where you can relax, perhaps with a vanilla crème

Frappuccino or toasted bagel with cream cheese.

There are several tables outdoors and plenty of space for children and dogs while you keep an eye on the traffic jams heading towards Somerset.

Wood and wicker are prominent throughout, with beach artwork on the walls, to give the feel of an American coffee shop with a sultry island flavour. Pendant lights act as a focal point.

Green and coral – the colours of the Latte’s logo – are incorporated into the design, but the white background provides a clean touch.

If you don’t fancy an egg chair, you can pull up a stool at a round table, sit on a wicker chair by a long bench or unwind on the comfy couch.

Hassell planned the project for about ten years and expect to open in 2020 before COVID-19 threw a spanner into the works.

Construction finally resumed after the

pandemic and finished in November in 2023.

“My husband and I studied what worked and what didn’t work from our travel research,” Hassell says.

“We designed it and had a vision of how we wanted it to look and how it should be organised from a flow perspective.

“We aimed for a relaxing, fun and comfortable vibe.”

The menu is modern, with a vast range of hot drinks including specialty coffees and boba teas. Snacks include sandwiches and cakes.

Latte’s Coffee & Pastries is open from 7am to 8pm from Monday to Thursday, 7am to 7pm on Fridays and 10am to 6pm on Sundays.

Coral Dental’s Spa-Inspired Studio

Coral Dental hopes to put a smile on the face of any patient walking through the door of its sparkling new studio.

The Whitening and Facial Aesthetics Studio has allowed the Queen Street operation to expand beyond traditional dental services and offer people the chance to improve the way they look.

And the Coral Dental team wants the feel-good factor to begin as soon as you arrive at the building.

A bright and light ambience combines with relaxing spa music to help make that trip to the dentist as comfortable as possible.

“People usually have a lot of anxiety with visiting the dentist,” says Dr Carmen Rabain, who designed the new studio with business partner, Dr Frances Betts. “This design and the spa music takes you away from that. We wanted to create a space which feels more like a spa and less like a dental office.”

The project has been a long-held ambition for Rabain, who bought the dental practice seven years ago.

“When I trained as a cosmetics dentist, I always wanted to have the space to

provide something beyond traditional general dentistry – something more than just fillings, extractions and root canals,” Rabain says.

“I always had the dream to do some aesthetics and cosmetics. Dr Betts joined me in 2020 and we had the same dream, so it was an opportunity to work together and make it happen.”

For this project, the pair bought an old music room adjacent to Coral Dental on the fourth floor of the Bermudiana Arcade.

At the time of purchase, it had carpeted floors, low ceilings, yellow and brown walls and was divided into several small rooms.

“We gutted the whole thing,” Rabain says.

“We put in new floors and lifted the ceilings to 10 feet to make it feel bigger, which will help the patients feel more relaxed. We also installed glass doors to open everything up, allowing light to shine through.

“We changed the colour palette to something that’s spa-like and also reminiscent of Bermuda, because we are called Coral Dental after all!”

The studio has three rooms: a digital

smile design and consultation room, an office and a treatment room.

Much of the action will take place in the smile design room where dentists, after ensuring the health of the patient’s teeth, will design the entire smile and display it on a large TV screen.

Rabain and Betts aimed for warm colours that allow light into the room. Some walls are a soft blue with an ocean tone and others are eggshell white, with light toned cabinets pulling from the driftwood textured tiled floor.

Bermuda themed artwork, including turtles, fish and ships, with a coral design mirror, add an island flourish.

“We wanted it to be modern with a

touch of the traditional,” Rabain says.

“It’s bright, clean, somewhat minimalistic and relaxing. As dentists, of course we know that everything here is hygienic, but it’s important that the people who come here can see for themselves that it’s clean.

“It’s something we’ve talked about years ago. It’s awesome that we got to put it into play after it took so long to get started.”

The project took about three months to complete.

ALM carried out demolition work, rebuilt and painted interior walls and ceilings and installed cabinets, door frames, doors and hardware.
