Effortless Flow: Modern Elegance Bendell Design transforms a dark, inefficient kitchen into a bright, spacious hub for entertaining

C

reating an efficient, modern kitchen with ample storage and quality appliances was the task set for Bendell Design in this St. George’s renovation. “The original kitchen was dark, with poor workflow and outdated cabinetry,” says Sue Bendell, Design Director.

To open up the space, Bendell removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room, while closing off a bedroom door to increase storage. Removing the thick, two-layer wall, composed of Bermuda stone and concrete, was the project’s biggest challenge, requiring two steel beams for structural support.

The result is a bright, spacious kitchen

with views over St. George’s Harbour.

White shaker cabinets, custom-built by Carvalho Custom Carpentry, stainless steel appliances, and Calacatta Gold Quartz countertops create a clean, modern aesthetic. Brass pendant lights over the island and dimmable lighting in glass display cabinets add warmth and versatility.

A 48” Sub-Zero fridge and Wolf gas range top enhance functionality, with the range and hood now serving as the kitchen’s focal point. “The Elica hood,

with its elegant design and decorative banding, complements the quartz backsplash beautifully,” notes Bendell.

With the kitchen now seamlessly flowing into the dining area, which seats eight, this space has transformed into a perfect spot for cooking and gathering.

“The client knew what they wanted, making decisions quickly,” says Bendell.

“The kitchen is now a stylish and efficient area for group entertaining.”

eye4design renovates a dated galley kitchen into a vibrant, open-plan living space

once narrow, outdated galley kitchen in this Southampton home has been transformed into an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area with modern touches and personality. eye4design’s Janice Burke oversaw the full renovation, which included knocking down walls, removing a large stone fireplace, and leveling floors before tackling design elements.

The young, professional owners wanted a contemporary, spacious layout without upper cabinets. Matte-black cabinet, are paired with a white acrylic countertop, a dark moss green backsplash tile from Pembroke Tile and Stone, gold hardware, and light vinyl plank flooring.

A custom maple dining table by Atlantic Millwork & Maintenance integrates seamlessly, with matching wooden slats on the kitchen island that “break up the black” and connect the space visually. The black front door and bronze kitchen faucet echo the cabinetry 12

hidden base lighting around the island, add a stylish ambiance. Push-open cabinets on the dining side of the island enhance the sleek design.

Burke also repurposed several midcentury pieces, including a sideboard and French-style dining room doors, refreshed with dark oil or paint. Her personal “dump shopping” finds, like an ottoman and vintage trays, bring charm and uniqueness to the revamped space.

Burke’s skillful blend of modern design and creative reuse has turned this kitchen into a chic, functional hub for the family. hardware, unifying the design.

the start that she wanted “some really funky tile.”

Enter the black and white B&W Fragment Natural tile, recommended

by Zachary Simmons at Pembroke Tile & Stone. This striking 24x46-inch tile covers the bathroom floor, shower, and portions of the walls, creating a bold, cohesive look.

The bathroom’s footprint stayed the same, but the shower was extended, and a raised jet tub was replaced with a sleek, floor-level soaking tub nestled into bay windows overlooking the water.

A stand-alone faucet and a potted plant complete the spa-like ambiance.

In areas without tile, Burke opted for a warm neutral “white sapling” paint and chose a warm wood finish for the double vanity, accented with black hardware. Black-framed mirrors, custom-made at Frameworks, and prominent lighting fixtures above the tub and vanities add cohesive touches.

The adjoining walk-in closet, accessible from both the bathroom and bedroom, is equally impressive, featuring see-through cabinets for shoes and bags, dedicated storage for hats, and extensive shelving.

Soft carpeting in the closet provides comfort underfoot, and Burke took special care with the transition between rooms, curving the tile edge to match the door opening.

Reflecting on the project, Burke says the bold tile is her favorite element: “It’s wild and crazy. It’s clean, it’s fun, it’s funky.”

Greek Oasis A Year-Round Sanctuary of Style and Serenity

H

igh on a hilltop with views of Harrington Sound, a little Aegean-style paradise has come to life, thanks to architect Mollie Bigley and project manager Ana Abend of Mollie Bigley Design & Architecture.

The owners, a young professional couple, wanted to transform a dated plunge pool area into a beautiful, usable space. “We said to Mollie and her team, go nuts,” laughs the owner. They did just that, creating an exquisite, Greek Isle-inspired oasis that’s perfect for both relaxation and entertaining.

Green and white ceramic tiles give the pool an infinity look, but without the running costs. Porcelain outdoor tiles, white concrete benches, and planters with bright flowers and greenery enhance the Greek feel. All woodwork is Spanish cedar, blending style and HouseGardenKitchen&Bath 2025

functionality: a wooden bench opens for storage, planters house up-lighting, and the bar area includes a fridge and cabinets.

A Starfire Designs firepit doubles as a coffee table, allowing the space to be enjoyed year-round. Hurricane readiness was also key; concrete benches and ample storage mean minimal setup and cleanup.

At night, the area transforms with

ambient lighting: Prisma lights along the walls, LED step lights, and colorchanging pool lights. “Now, it’s almost another room,” says the owner. “It’s very Santorini; bright and inviting by day, and cozy at night.”

Bold Style for Growing Sons L&S Design Ltd. renovates two ensuite bathrooms with color and sophistication

L

&S Design Ltd. transformed two ensuite bathrooms for a family’s sons, aiming for a bold yet mature look. “The client wanted bathrooms that better suit the young men their sons are becoming,” says Shelley Ray, Senior Interior Designer at L&S Design. The renovation included new flooring, wall paneling, vanities, wardrobes, plumbing fixtures, and lighting.

“The homeowner enjoys color and patterns, which we incorporated while maintaining a mature style,” adds designer Casey Clements. Each bathroom features a tub, shower, and custom wardrobe, balancing

individuality and harmony. Full timber wall paneling complements bespoke shaker-style vanities with natural stone

counters and vintage nickel hardware.

The first bathroom’s palette includes blues, whites, and blacks, while the second combines blues, greens, greys, and browns, each reflecting a transitional style. Decorative cement floor tiles with unique patterns enhance the sophisticated feel, while dramatic stone slabs serve as counters and shower walls.

Both bathrooms receive natural light, complemented by decorative vanity lighting. The second bathroom also includes a custom closet with ample hanging space, shelving, and drawers, painted to match the bathroom’s aesthetic.

“The design came together beautifully during installation,” says Ms. Ray. “We’re thrilled with how the painted millwork complements the stone and tiles.” The homeowners were equally pleased, excited to present these stylish spaces to their sons.

ringing Bermuda’s traditional architecture into the modern age takes innovation, and Hasco Home delivered with this apartment renovation on Harbour Road.

“The client wanted to modernise the space while retaining its charm, creating an industrial yet earthy, warm feel,” says Lynn Hassell, owner of Hasco Home.

Natural tones shine through in elements like cabinets from CNC, floating shelves, and concrete-colored floor tiles. Gold and brass fixtures add warmth, while a palette of whites and greys brightens the space, especially in the back rooms.

As an older apartment, the space came with structural challenges, including low

y transforming three separate rooms into a single, open-plan layout, Hasco Home created a bright, welcoming space for a young family in Warwick. The project’s main goal was to bring light into the previously enclosed kitchen by removing walls and installing steel beams between the kitchen, dining room, and sitting room.

“The layout stayed the same, but with

everything open, the family can now entertain, do homework, or simply spend time together while cooking,” says Lynn Hassell, owner of Hasco Home. The new peninsula visually and socially connects the spaces, creating a friendly, open environment.

The bright, clean aesthetic flows through large white porcelain tiles, Cambria Quartz Port Rush countertops, and a subtle blue vein complemented by

navy and grey furnishings. Stainless steel KitchenAid appliances add a modern, chic appeal, while CNC cabinetry with glimmering low-profile pulls brings understated elegance.

The true “wow” factor is the Silver Lumiere Glass backsplash, chosen by the owner. “At first, I thought, ‘Oh my gosh’, “says Ms. Hassell, “but it turned out really nicely and complements the beauty of the countertop.” which adds a striking yet harmonious contrast with its metallic sheen.

rriving at this newly built Southampton home feels like stepping into California.

Architect Geoff Parker, alongside project manager Kris Hedges, crafted this flat-roofed, industrial-style home with a “California modernist” aesthetic at the owners’ request. Having previously lived in a traditional Bermuda home, the couple wanted a contemporary, industrial feel, with polished concrete floors, exposed concrete ceilings, and a monochrome color 20

Built on a steep plot with panoramic South Shore views, this two-bedroom, two-bathroom home uses extensive glass, especially in the main bedroom and living area, to maximise natural light and vistas.

A Modern Family Retreat Architect Tika Gilbert transforms a traditional Pembroke cottage into an open, family-friendly space

W

hen a young family moved back to Bermuda, they wanted to make the most of island life. Their Pembroke cottage had an ideal location with North Shore water access, but the interior was cramped and outdated. Architect Tika Gilbert of Tika Gilbert Architects was brought in to reimagine the space, creating an open, modern family home with a strong indoor-outdoor connection.

Without expanding the original footprint, Gilbert transformed the cottage by removing walls and opening up views. She enclosed a former porch to create a living room, featuring a 16-foot opening with accordion doors and an electric mosquito screen, allowing the family to enjoy the outdoors comfortably.

The home’s decor is intentionally 24

neutral, focusing on texture for interest.

“If you keep everything very neutral, your accent pieces can add color,” explains Gilbert, which allows the homeowners flexibility in decor updates over time.

Texture-rich materials add visual appeal. The living room’s media wall has a woven rattan effect, created with textured tiles from Pembroke Tile and Stone. In the dining area, the original fireplace was modernized with Italian stone mosaic tiles that provide a 3D effect. Porcelain floor tiles, designed to mimic natural stone, unify the space, complementing the kitchen’s finishes.

For a streamlined appearance, Gilbert incorporated open display shelves in

hard-to-reach areas and placed the microwave low in the island to keep surfaces clear.

Black fixtures, including cabinet

hardware, light fixtures, and door handles, contrast elegantly with the neutral tones. Glass pendant lights with black accents hang over the island, maintaining the spacious, open feel.

The laundry room, located at the back of the kitchen with its own exterior door, features stacked appliances, a sink, and storage space—all in colors that coordinate with the kitchen.

Transforming the old Bermuda stone cottage presented structural challenges.

“It didn’t have any lintels, so we had to ensure everything was structurally sound,” says Gilbert, noting that the project required extensive rebar to reinforce the walls.

In the end, the renovation achieved the clients’ vision of an open, functional home where family and guests can interact easily. “I love the kitchen and the open layout,” says Gilbert. “Now, no matter where anyone’s sitting, they can still connect and communicate.”

A Hilltop Oasis Transformed W hen the owners of this traditional-style Paget home decided to enhance their outdoor space, the goal was modest: convert a small brick patio with a retractable awning into a covered seating area. Nine months later, the result is a stunning transformation — a spacious

Architectural designer Vanessa J. Daniel of HDH was key to bringing this vision to life. “It started as just a covered patio,” she recalls. “Then the plans grew—a larger verandah, a pool, and a pool house. It all

took on a life of its own.”

The revamped outdoor area is now an entertainer’s dream for both adults and children, with overland views of Hamilton.

The pool house features a studio-style kitchenette, dark moss green cabinets, light wooden shelving, and a bar area with fully opening windows. There’s also a cozy living space, a powder room, and an outdoor shower framed by removable, customcrafted dark wood slats.

The verandah accommodates both dining and seating areas, while the 16 x 32-foot pool includes a nine-foot-deep end and a shallow ledge for socialising.

Around the pool, there’s ample space for sunbathing, playing, and relaxing.

In keeping with the home’s traditional style, the railings, gates, and shower panels were crafted from dark Iroko wood. Custom cedar doors leading to the verandah and dark-stained pine beams in the verandah ceiling and pool house maintain the classic aesthetic.

To balance the dark wood elements, light flooring from Pembroke Tile & Stone was chosen. The verandah and pool area feature white-grey porcelain tiles, while the pool house has wood-like grey porcelain tiles. The pool’s turquoise hue comes from hydrazzo, with a clean, understated scum-line tile that blends seamlessly.

Outdoor lighting adds charm, with elegant black carriage lights, sleek cylindrical fixtures, and industrial-style lighting around the bar. Local suppliers played a significant role, from providing pool railings to creating the cabinets, shelving, and countertops.

“It was great to work on this project with a client who valued supporting local businesses,” says Daniel. The result is a sophisticated yet welcoming outdoor retreat, perfectly blending practicality and beauty.

This hilltop oasis is a testament to thoughtful design, skilled craftsmanship, and a vision that exceeded expectations.
