Engaging Our Nextgen in the Meeting Industry By aligning global organisers with the expectations of digital-native professionals, Dubai demonstrates how NextGen-focused design can transform engagement into a catalyst for innovation.

Engaging the first digital-native generation has always been important, but in today’s meeting industry, it has evolved into far more than refreshing formats. This new cohort of professionals brings expectations shaped by seamless connectivity, personalisation and valuesdriven choices. They look for authenticity, interaction and opportunities to co-create, transforming events into multi-layered environments for collaboration and rapid knowledge exchange.

Rather than functioning within traditional topdown structures, engaging NextGen delegates now demands an ecosystem that mirrors how young professionals learn, communicate and connect. PCOs, venues, technology partners, DMCs, universities, subject matter experts and associations all contribute distinct priorities and expertise. Success today lies not in adding technology for its own sake, but in aligning shared objectives to design experiences rooted in genuineness, digital fluency and meaningful participation.

Dubai is naturally aligned with this evolution. With a young, globally diverse population and a government that that has embedded digital transformation and AI across public services, the city has become a destination where forward-looking formats can be implemented at scale. Its long-standing commitment to innovation – from the establishment of Dubai Internet City as a major technology hub, to early blockchain strategies and one of the world’s first digitisation departments – has created a strong digital infrastructure. Emphasis on AI, STEM learning and future-skills development across schools and universities has cultivated a technologically confident and globally aware workforce. Combined with thriving sectors such as Industry 4.0, gaming, advanced manufacturing and the broader digital economy, Dubai offers real-world relevance for emerging professionals. Flagship events across these fields, supported by world-class audiovisual capabilities and increasingly AI-enabled production environments, reinforce its appeal to this new generation.

Greetings, colleagues and partners across the meetings world, As we approach the close of the year, I would like to extend my warmest seasonal wishes to you and your loved ones – a time to reflect, reconnect and look ahead with renewed purpose. This message reaches you at the end of a highly productive and inspiring season for IAPCO, filled with travel, activity and meaningful opportunities to deliver our mission and continue unlocking Impact, Education, Advocacy and Community Engagement.

By 2030, it is estimated that more than 70% of the global workforce will be made up of Millennials and Gen Z – gosh, do I feel old – and already over 55% of new entrants into the business events sector identify professional growth and purpose-driven work as their top priorities. This shift is reshaping not only how we design our business events, but what services we offer to our members, what material we provide to them and how we nurture the talent that will lead our industry forward.

From taking the stage at partner events such as PCMA, ICCA and the World Tourism Forum in Brussels, to holding our Council Meeting and Advisory Forum in the stunning city of Istanbul and participating in a vibrant IBTM World in Barcelona, the past weeks have been rich in dialogue, collaboration and shared ambition.

What becomes clear in reading the stories in this edition, is that today’s emerging professionals are seeking more than roles – they are seeking authentic experiences that allow them to connect with destinations, engage with communities and contribute meaningfully to the future of our industry.

As always, we have engaged with diverse audiences across the globe – yet one in particular is increasingly coming into focus as we move forward. As we look toward 2026, we have chosen a forward-thinking theme for this final issue of the year: Gen Z – a generation driven by creativity, authenticity, independence and a strong digital mindset. A highly connected, value-driven, human-centric and entrepreneurial community that will play a defining role in shaping the future of our industry.

IAPCO is proud to continue to invest in this cohort of professionals. Through the IAPCO NextGen Committee, IAPCO ensures we have a NextGen ‘voice’ on every other committee and working group across our Council leadership.

Our EDGE Seminars address meeting architecture that speaks to their needs and our online content is presented by faculty spanning many generations, ensuring diversity and inclusion.

This generation deserves our attention, just as senior leaders deserve theirs – reinforcing the unique role of our industry as a bridge and platform for cross-generational communication, collaboration and impact. IAPCO’s strategy and vision meaningfully integrate Gen Z and emerging leaders across every pillar of our work, and I am truly excited for us to further explore this at the forthcoming IAPCO Annual Meeting & General Assembly in Athens.

With our Future Leaders Programmes in APAC, and another to come soon, our current Hero Award – soon to be renamed, watch this space – and our collaborative NextGen workshops at industry events, we are creating platforms that put our emerging professionals at the heart of innovation and our growth.

So, as we close the year and turn the page toward a new chapter, let us dive into this inspiring content created by our community, and discover how we can engage with Gen Z and turn the ‘CODE’ into an impactful opportunity – for today and for the future.

Industry × Philosophy: A New Global Conversation in Kyoto, Operated by Congrès Inc.

On 23–24 September 2025, the First Kyoto Conference 2025: Towards the Realisation of a ‘Multilayered Society of Values’ (organised by the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy) was held at the Kyoto International Conference Centre.

What is the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy?

Founded in July 2023 by NTT Inc. and Yasuo Deguchi, Dean and Professor of Philosophy at Graduate School of Letters, Kyoto University, aims to build an international movement dedicated to realising a ‘multilayered society of values.’ Professor Markus Gabriel of the University of Bonn serves as Senior Global Advisor, and numerous domestic and international corporations participate as supporting members.

Open and dynamic discussions in roundtable-style sessions Over the two-day programme, researchers, industry leaders, religious representatives, national and local governments and private organisations engaged in meaningful discussions on a wide range of topics – including AI, arts, culture, science and technology, governance, democracy and the role of industry – through panel discussions, lunch sessions, roundtable sessions and more.

Regarding conference operations, the organisers expressed their desire to ‘emphasise communication among participants,’ and to, ‘hold roundtable-style sessions with voluntary participation.’

The Kyoto Conference was conceived as a forum where researchers in the humanities – such as philosophers, who normally have little interaction with the business world – and leaders from the economic sector can come together to discuss the challenges faced by science, technology and industry, particularly those symbolised by AI.

The roundtable sessions implemented this time involved dividing the venue into separate rooms, each equipped with multiple round tables. Around ten participants and a facilitator engaged in approximately forty minutes of discussion at each table. To ensure that open and dynamic discussions progressed smoothly, simultaneous interpretation was provided at every table.

In his opening remarks, Jun Sawada, Executive Chair of NTT Inc. and Co-chair of the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy, stated: ‘We hope to create ongoing opportunities for dialogue

unprecedented undertaking even within our extensive operational experience. After thorough internal examination, we proposed venue layouts, equipment specifications and methods for carrying out simultaneous interpretation.

With the cooperation of many individuals – including those coordinating equipment and arranging interpreters – we were able to prepare smoothly and support productive discussions during the event, making the project highly rewarding for our team.

At the dinner on 23 September, guests were served a meal using Kyoto ingredients, along with programming designed to introduce international participants to Japanese culture. Karateka Kiyou Shimizu, silver medalist in the women’s kata at the Tokyo Olympics, performed a karate demonstration, captivating the audience with her tense, dynamic movements and refined technique.

Participants from around the world also enjoyed utai (chanting) from Noh, a traditional performing art, experiencing Japanese and Kyoto culture first-hand and savouring the lingering impression with deep appreciation .

Showcasing the charms of Kyoto At the welcome reception on the 22 September, a ‘Dinner Talk’ – a discussion-based format – was organised to encourage communication among participants. A colourful buffet featuring ingredients from Kyoto and a wide selection of Kyoto sake contributed to a warm atmosphere where natural conversations emerged, deepening interaction among attendees.

From Gamification to Genuine Connection: What the NextGen Taught Us in Groningen From gamified learning to sustainable design, how new expectations are reshaping scientific meetings.

A new generation has entered the meetings industry.

One that expects more than lectures and learning. Digital natives seek purpose, participation and connection.

At the European Polymer Federation Congress 2025 (EPF 2025) in Groningen, this shift came vividly to life.

With over 1,300 participants, 1,200 abstracts and 32 sponsors, EPF 2025 was large in scale; yet its real success lay in its open, playful and connected atmosphere. The congress showed that when people are invited to join in rather than just attend, engagement happens naturally.

Gamification as connection, not distraction At EPF 2025, gamification was used as a simple but effective way to encourage interaction. The congress app moved beyond its traditional role as an information tool.

Even before the event began, delegates were already posting, sharing fun insights and connecting with others they hoped to meet. During the congress, participants could take part in small challenges, scan QR codes at exhibitors and post on the event feed. By doing so, they could earn points.

‘Gamification made the congress feel more accessible,’ the Congress by design team reflected. ‘It lowered barriers, encouraged interaction and helped spark conversations that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.’

With many first-time attendees, the number of students tripling compared to previous editions, the app proved especially valuable in helping this new generation connect, participate and feel at home within the wider scientific community. The technology didn’t replace personal contact, it helped create it.

Designing for discovery Beyond the app, every element of EPF 2025 was designed to invite exploration and connection. Interactive e-poster zones, concise scientific sessions and informal meeting points encouraged spontaneous encounters and meaningful exchange. Young researchers could present their work in approachable settings, bridging the gap between established experts and the next generation of innovators.

Hosted in Groningen, EPF 2025 reflected Europe’s collaborative spirit: diverse, open and inclusive. Congress by design worked with local partners to create an event that felt both seamless and welcoming, showing that connection isn’t just built in sessions, but in the way an event itself is shaped. Despite major external events taking place at the same time, including the NATO Summit and the TT Assen races, the congress became a living example of what happens when science connects through gamification.

Lessons for the industry EPF 2025 showed that engaging the NextGen starts with curiosity and translating that into meaningful design choices. The congress proved that interaction doesn’t need to be complex; it needs to be considered. When people are given room to explore, to contribute, and to connect on their own terms, engagement becomes genuine.

Participation today is intentional. The new generation chooses consciously where to spend their time and expects that time to count. That means meetings must offer freedom of choice, flexible formats and opportunities to connect across generations. Before, during and after the event.

Three takeaways for designing with the NextGen in mind: • Make participation effortless. Engagement grows when interaction feels natural – a clear app, a short quiz or a playful challenge can make all the difference.

• Give ownership. Invite young participants to help shape sessions, moderate discussions or share ideas; involvement turns attendance into commitment.

• Design for connection. Create space for conversation and curiosity. The real value of any meeting lies not in the content, but in what happens when people, and science, connects. Connect generations. Pair mentors with students; make learning a two-way conversation.

Thoughts of Trishan Spohr, a young project manager at CPO HANSER SERVICE When people think of Generation Z, familiar cliches arise: work-shy, overly focused on work–life balance, constantly job-hopping, or wandering around as ‘smombies’ – smartphone zombies. Some employers hesitate at the thought of hiring or onboarding NextGen, and to be fair, some of these perceptions are true – Gen Z does spend significantly more time on their phones than other groups, and many change jobs within two years. Then again, many Gen Z individuals take on side hustles, and work longer hours than expected.[1] In fact, for 97% of them, their work is part of their identity. Gen Z will account for around a third of the global workforce by 2030[2] and those who fail to adapt to them now risk losing the generations that follow.

One thing is clear: Gen Z is redefining workplace dynamics and companies must adapt – not only at CPO HANSER SERVICE and in the meetings industry, but across all sectors.

While core values such as family, health and personal freedom remain relatively consistent across generations, other preferences differ significantly. Gen Z places strong value on themes such as appreciation and recognition, open and transparent communication and a desire for change and modern leadership.

Feedback & Communication Traditional feedback structures – annual or quarterly reviews – are largely incompatible with Gen Z’s expectations. They prefer short, direct and informal input, ideally immediately after completing tasks or project sprints. A healthy error culture, the willingness to speak openly about mistakes, and ‘trial-and-error’ approaches are key. Mentoring and clearly communicated career opportunities also matter even more to Gen Z than to previous generations.

Values and Principles While financial incentives matter to Gen Z, factors such as meaningful work, career development opportunities and a healthy work–life balance all rank significantly higher than salary. Most decisive, however, is that 88% want to work for an organisation whose values align with their own. Transparent communication about corporate culture, objectives and social responsibility is therefore crucial.

Leadership & Participation Finally, Gen Z has a strong desire for participatory leadership. Concepts such as reverse-mentoring pairs or ‘Captain of the Day/Process’ models can quickly give young employees a sense of genuine involvement and ownership. At the same time, no generation is as techsavvy, uses AI as naturally or brings as much socialmedia fluency. Listening to their perspectives can inspire new ways of working, increase agility and flexibility and introduce more diverse problem-solving approaches.

Engaging NextGen in Your Workforce

To conclude, Gen Z is far from a homogeneous group.

They do not all share the same values, expectations or levels of confidence. While many seek active participation, others prefer less direct interaction. Each member of Gen Z brings their own individuality. Recognising these differences, listening closely and adapting organisational approaches accordingly will be essential for successfully integrating Gen Z into the workforce. Changing processes in communicating feedback, rethinking leadership and clearly communicating values is the inevitable change to bring the NextGens into your workforce.

At CPO HANSER SERVICE, many of the points above have evolved quite naturally. From ROI to ROE: Engaging the Next Generation of Event Participants

Connecting with digital natives is an intriguing challenge for today’s meeting professionals. In a world that moves at a fast pace, driven by research, innovation, entertainment and originality, the agenda demands one thing above all: flexibility.

Working daily to promote international congresses for European scientific societies, I am witnessing firsthand how the new generation, the very audience these events aim to attract, is redefining the paradigm. Until recently, most participants were content to simply attend congresses; now, this new generation of professionals wants to co-create them, to be active contributors rather than passive observers.

In this new landscape, a single Instagram post can often generate more engagement than an entire email campaign, because the digital world we belong to is a natural extension of our reality. This sense of community, of belonging and interaction, is something to be carefully considered when designing a congress: whether digital or physical, it is an aspect that must be intentionally nurtured.

Throughout my career, I have learned how increasingly strategic it is to engage participants, foster digital communities and create space for user-generated content, making attendees active actors in shaping the event experience.

We had the opportunity to put this approach into practice at a recent congress we coordinated, building an interactive wall where each participant could leave a message. The result was remarkable: participants began taking photos and videos while interacting with the wall, sharing more than 300 Instagram stories in just three days, reaching over 300,000 views! This spontaneous cross-channel engagement demonstrated how offline experiences can spark online buzz and how social media plays a crucial role in NextGen engagement.

Live interaction is also key: for the biennial congress of a European scientific society, we created a dedicated area 14

for live interviews with key speakers and sponsors. The sessions, focused on trending topics, were streamed in real time, allowing delegates to participate both in person and remotely, broadening reach and inclusivity.

Yet, technology alone is not enough. At the heart of engagement remains something profoundly human.

We need to shift our focus from ROI to ROE – Return on Experience – and promote emotional and relational impact as much as numbers. While AI will continue to grow in event planning, execution and analysis, the true challenge lies in preserving authentic human connection within an increasingly digital landscape.

With different generations now active in the workplace, creating meaningful connections requires diverse communication styles, flexible spaces and new modes of interaction. Capturing the attention of NextGen doesn’t mean shouting louder; it means speaking more directly.

The visual language has become the new grammar of engagement, and if we don’t learn to use it, we risk being left out of the conversation.

Ultimately, the ‘phygital’ offers the flexibility that the NextGen craves. They want to feel part of something bigger, and at the same time, they want to share it. Creating experiences that connect these two dimensions is what truly keeps them engaged and coming back.

Today’s early-career professionals grew up digital. They learn by doing, move quickly and expect clear outcomes.

The classic congress still works. It is built on standardised needs and has proven its value for decades. But if we want deeper engagement with the digital-native gen, the task isn’t to rip and replace, it’s to include and enhance more practice-led formats, tighter pacing and a year-round community that peaks on site.

Why this mix? In short, we keep the basics of the model and upgrade how participants interact with it, turning attendees into contributors and aligning with their unique traits.

So here are three quick, field-tested plays we’ve used that consistently lift engagement.

Resident bootcamp – practice first With the Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery (HSIOIRS) in Volos, we ran the Cataract Training Days: three days of intensive wet labs paired with short, focused theory, built entirely for residents and led by senior trainers from across Greece. Demand spoke for itself, where of the 220 resident doctors registered for the national congress, all 150 wet-lab seats filled within two weeks!

Result: resident registrations rose by 39.6% versus the previous edition (alongside other contributing factors).

The mix of social proof, light stakes and fun turns passive attendees into active participants and produces instantly shareable moments for the community.

Cracking the Code: Engaging the Digital-Native gen

Community first – Congress as the peak The Hellenic Society of Dermatology and Venereology (EDAE) has run weekly online lessons with distinguished clinicians for two years, deliberately nurturing residents between congresses. That consistent touchpoint builds belonging and momentum. The annual congress keeps setting new attendance records. The message is simple: the community doesn’t start at badge pick-up; the event is the crescendo of year-round learning, of an already vivid community!

The feedback? 96.59% rated the event 4 or 5/5, 98.85% asked for a repeat and 100% would recommend it to another resident. The format builds confidence through doing, with the theory in service of practice. Give attendees concrete skills they can point to immediately.

Residents quiz – Competition as a learning experience At the Panhellenic Congress of Blood Transfusion, teams from from fourteen hospitals competed in a live, highenergy quiz for a team trip to the next ISBT congress. Each team submitted a short intro video and a playful name (such as Bloody Stories) then battled on stage!

Conclusion NextGen professionals aren’t disengaged. They’re selective. When we design for practice-led learning, invite friendly competition that spotlights new voices and treat the congress as the summit of an active community, they show up, lean in and bring peers. The aim isn’t to overhaul the congress; it’s to enrich it. No less depth, just delivery that clicks with the digital-native gen.

Why Personal Brands and Digital-First Storytelling Are the Missing Link Between Gen Z and the Meetings Industry Gen Z is not discovering careers or conferences through brochures, advertisements or industry associations.

They are discovering them through people. Real people who show what they do online in ways that feel human, unfiltered and meaningful.

And yet, for an industry built entirely on people, connection and experiences, the meetings sector has been surprisingly slow to embrace personal branding and digital-first storytelling. In contrast, some of the world’s long established or more traditional industries, such as airlines, banks, law firms and even government departments, are thriving on TikTok and Instagram by spotlighting the personalities and culture behind their brand. They attract talent, build trust and expand their audiences through the faces who represent them rather than the logos that sit behind them.

For the global meetings industry, this is an untapped opportunity. Personal brands and digital storytelling are the bridge that connects future generations to our workforce and to enhance our delegates’ experience.

As a Business Development Manager at Arinex, a Gen Z myself, and an active member of the Australian Business Events Association Emerging Leaders community, I see this shift every day. Young professionals want careers that feel purposeful and people-led. Early career and student delegates are seeking conference content that feels relatable, authentic and worth sharing. And both groups discover these experiences in the same place: their ‘for you’ feed.

This article explores the two sides of the opportunity: attracting Gen Z talent into the meetings industry as a viable and exciting career path, and engaging them as delegates once they arrive, using the platforms and storytelling styles that already shape their world.

You cannot be what you cannot see Most people do not grow up understanding what a PCO is. Many of us entered this field sideways, migrating from tourism, hospitality, higher education or creative industries.

Gen Z are not going to choose a career they cannot visualise.

When our project coordinators, event strategists, and producers share what they do online, they build the visibility that our industry has lacked for decades. A short video showing an exhibition bump-in, a photo gallery from a sustainable venue site visit or a short reflection after delivering a conference gives students and early career professionals an honest window into what this career looks and feels like.

Supported well, your internal workforce can: • Showcase culture in a way a brochure never can • Highlight progression, travel, flexibility and meaningful work • Break down the myths about events being limited to weddings or parties • Position the meetings industry as a purpose-driven sector with global impact These stories humanise us. They cut through the noise.

They show Gen Z that a PCO career can be strategic, creative, fast paced and deeply rewarding.

Turning our people into our strongest recruitment campaign Personal branding is not about ego. It is about relevance, transparency and trust. Across the global meetings industry, there is enormous potential in empowering our people to share their professional journeys online as part of a modern, human-centred approach to talent attraction.

Imagine a project manager sharing how they secured a major sponsor or redesigned a programme to improve engagement, highlighting the strategic depth of their role.

A marketing strategist celebrating a registration launch that surpasses early targets provides a glimpse into the momentum, data and campaign strategy behind a successful meeting. A project coordinator posting a short video from onsite after delivering a record number of delegates for their congress communicates the scale and energy of our work in a way no brochure ever could. A first-time student attendee filming their reaction to how transformative the conference was for their confidence and career aspirations tells a story no marketing asset can replicate.

From followers to delegates: how speakers and ambassadors shape attendance Gen Z will often attend an event because they follow a speaker they admire, a creator they trust or an ambassador whose values mirror their own. Their decision is influenced more by the person on stage than the marketing campaign behind them.

Instead of relying solely on headshots and session descriptions, we can: • Co-create short videos where speakers explain their session and why it matters • Encourage ambassadors to film ‘come with me; content in the lead-up to the event • Host pre-event Instagram Lives or TikTok Q&As targeted at students and early career delegates • Share User-Generated Content (UGC) from volunteers and Emerging Leaders that showcases the event through their lens Authentic content carries a different weight with digital natives. It builds trust and drives attendance more effectively than polished promotional assets.

Designing events that are TikTok ready If we want delegates to create and share content, we need to design conferences that support it. TikTok ready events are not about encouraging constant filming. They are about intentionally building moments that are visually interesting, emotionally resonant and worth sharing.

This can look like: • Short, high impact sessions that translate well into clips • Interactive spaces or media corners designed for quick content creation • Live polls, breakout challenges and collaborative problem solving • Reverse mentoring sessions where Emerging Leaders interview senior executives • QR code prompts that encourage UGC in low pressure ways When delegates feel invited to co-create content, their posts extend the life, relevance and reach of the event.

In summary: the dos and do nots For talent attraction Do: • Encourage staff to show their real work online • Highlight purpose, wellbeing, growth and flexibility • Share behind-the-scenes moments that feel human • Partner with universities and training providers to amplify these stories Do not: • Over-polish or over-control every piece of content • Rely solely on job ads and formal position descriptions • Keep brilliant early career staff invisible online

These are the stories Gen Z seeks out. They want to understand the real milestones, challenges and wins that shape our sector. They want to know who they will be learning from, collaborating with and growing beside.

For delegate engagement Do: • Treat speakers and ambassadors as co-marketers • Provide visual, interactive and shareable experiences • Give young delegates platforms to speak and participate • Design content moments intentionally Do not: • Limit communication to email and static webpages • Ignore TikTok, Instagram Reels and UGC opportunities • Assume formal formats will hold the attention of digital natives

The way forward The next generation of meeting professionals is already watching, learning and forming impressions online. If we want to attract them into our workforce and engage them as delegates, we need to meet them where they are.

We already design meaningful experiences. Now we must extend that creativity to how we tell our own story.

Personal brands and digital-first storytelling are not trends.

They are the missing link between Gen Z and the global meetings industry.

Once we embrace this shift, we stop waiting for the next generation to discover us and start actively welcoming them into the future we are building together.

Congress by design The European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS)

The collaboration between Congress by design and the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) demonstrates how shared vision and strategic partnership can elevate a scientific meeting into a truly global and future-focused platform. Seeking to expand its annual meeting and modernise its long-term strategy, ESVS turned to Congress by design not only for operational expertise but for a partner capable of challenging convention and co-creating growth.

Working as one team, the partners introduced a collaborative planning model that strengthened programme development, enhanced sustainability practices and improved sponsor and delegate engagement. Joint meeting-design sessions inspired new formats, while practical sustainability measures

– carbon footprint reporting, reduced printing, reusable branding and greener registration – aligned the meeting with ESVS’s core values.

This unified approach delivered record delegate numbers, broader geographical reach, increased sponsorship income and significantly stronger satisfaction across all key areas.

Vienna Joins IAPCO’s Global Network of Destination Partners

Strengthening collaboration between cities and PCOs for the next chapter of global meetings Earlier this month, IAPCO announced a new two-year Destination Partnership with Meeting Destination Vienna, represented by the Vienna Convention Bureau, commencing on 1 January 2026.

This partnership welcomes Vienna into the IAPCO Destination Partner community, further strengthening a global network of leading convention bureaux that work strategically with IAPCO and its accredited PCOs. The agreement reflects IAPCO’s core tenet that partnerships between destinations and professional conference organisations are a vital part of the successful delivery of professional meetings and events. Effective collaboration between PCOs and convention bureaux allows for aligned, city-wide approaches that result in stronger outcomes for clients, local communities and international delegates.

As a Destination Partner, Vienna will work closely with IAPCO’s global community and contribute to several key initiatives.

This includes joining the judging panel for the IAPCO Partner’s Emerging Leader Award, which recognises emerging industry talent. Vienna will also host an upcoming IAPCO Advisory Board Meeting – an opportunity to deepen engagement with local leaders and showcase the city’s world-class capabilities.

A ten-year partnership in action: OIC Group powered a record-breaking Global Spine Congress 2025 For 10 years, OIC Group and AO Spine have worked side-by-side to deliver one of the world’s most influential medical congresses – the Global Spine Congress (GSC). First secured through a competitive bidding process in 2015 and continuously renewed, the partnership has grown into a strategic alliance built on trust, shared purpose and a seamless joint-working model.

Autism-Europe Congress 2025 Hosted by Autism-Europe, in partnership with AsIAm, Ireland’s Autism Charity, the 14th International Autism-Europe Congress was held in Dublin in September 2025. The event welcomed over 1,800 participants, including Autistic individuals, families, researchers and advocates from across Europe and beyond.

Ireland has strengthened its reputation as a leading destination for transformative business events, securing two major awards at the ICCA Congress through the ICCA and BestCities Global Alliance Incredible Impacts Programme. Europe’s Meetings and Events Industry: Continues to be a Global Anchor for Innovation and Impact

Europe’s business and professional events industry continues to drive the global industry with PCO and destination stories demonstrating a highly coordinated, knowledge-driven powerhouse. Mature destination strategies, coupled with quality and consistent PCO deliveries have made the region a reliable engine for association congresses and business events – delivering economic value while advancing science, policy and professional communities.

for ‘purpose-driven, hybrid and sustainability-aware’ events, especially relevant for IAPCO’s sustainability, DEI and global-membership aspirations.

It is important to note that Europe’s best events now plan for legacy as well as logistics, embedding education, sustainability and community benefit alongside attendance and revenue.

Why is Europe doing so well?

It is difficult to estimate the exact economic value of professional and business events to the European market as certain research bodies estimate this differently: •

According to a 2025 industry analysis by Mordor Intelligence, the European ‘event management’ industry was estimated at USD 56.81 billion in 2025 – with a projected growth to USD 86.53 billion by 2030, the bulk of which remains inperson events (about 63.5% market share as of 2024).

Another source (projecting total ‘events market’ in Europe) estimates a market size for 2025 at USD 450.85 billion, with growth to USD 882.34 billion by 2035.

What is fair to say is that the events market in Europe continues to expand, buoyed by rebound in in-person gatherings, growing hybrid demand and resurgence in corporate, exhibition and conference activity.

The strong rebound and growth trajectory of the market suggests good demand and willingness to invest in in-person (and hybrid) congresses and conferences.

As an association, IAPCO, along with our members, are leveraging an increase in corporate/SME demand

1. Research density and policy alignment Europe’s competitive advantage remains its intellectual capital. The proximity of universities, hospitals and research institutes – often linked to EU programmes and professional societies– creates a deep bench of local hosts, faculty and ambassadors. Policy frameworks encourage the translation of convening into outcomes: guidelines for open science, public health collaboration, skills and innovation clusters.

2. Infrastructure at scale – air, rail and venues A web of international airports pairs with high-speed rail and efficient public transport, enabling multi-city itineraries and lower-carbon choices. City-centre convention facilities, walkable districts and broad hotel tiers make large programmes feasible while keeping the delegate experience human-scale.

3. Sustainability and accessibility leadership European destinations increasingly treat climate action, circular operations and inclusive design as baseline requirements rather than differentiators.

Venue standards, destination charters and supplier scorecards are moving from pilots to policy – covering energy, waste, water, food systems, accessibility and social procurement. The result is a practical pathway for organisers to decarbonise and widen participation without sacrificing quality.

5. A mature supplier ecosystem From PCOs and venues to AV, tech and creative studios, Europe offers depth of choice and dependable delivery. Standardised service levels and accreditation schemes help clients benchmark partners and scale best practice across portfolios.

Scientific and professional congresses are Europe’s ‘core competence.’ They bring senior decision-makers, longer stays and higher per-capita spend; they also catalyse research partnerships, clinical trials, talent pipelines and inward investment. Just as important, they leave measurable legacies – curricula, policy dialogues, community engagement and capacity building – beyond the event week.

4. Cross-border collaboration by design Schengen travel, multilingual talent and long traditions of association life make cross-border governance workable. Cities and convention bureaux co-create bids, share sector priorities and align legacy goals with clusters like life sciences, energy transition, digital and creative industries.

Europe’s opportunity is not just to host more events, but to host them differently, with lower carbon, higher inclusion and clearer purpose. Initiatives such as the Net Zero Carbon Events and IAPCO’s newly launched sustainability strategy, ensures that the region can continue to deliver financially but also more sustainably.

However, there are some challenges we should also consider. Inflation and peak-season compression test budgets. Destinations counter with coordinated calendars, shoulder-season incentives, portfolio pricing and stronger forecasting to reduce late booking risk.

Organisers face tighter carbon targets from funders and stakeholders. European partners respond with credible baselines, venue energy data, waste and food and beverage reporting, supplier verification and railoptimised schedules. Privacy, accessibility, health and safety and tax rules vary across jurisdictions. PCOs and venues increasingly offer compliance toolkits and unified data standards to streamline delivery. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard conversations in all sorts of contexts about the NextGen, that generation delivered to the world holding a mobile phone in one hand and a passport to possibility in the other. Over time, we’ve coated this cohort, those born roughly between 1997 and 2012, with a familiar set of assumptions and stereotypes: hyper-technology-obsessed, a little entitled, owners of short attention spans,and ready to job-hop at the slightest nudge. All of this in sharp contrast to our own generation, the generation that ‘stuck through it’ in both good times and bad.

Yet when we flip the coin and take a moment to breathe, a far more generous and accurate picture emerges. I like to focus on the positive, the good, the glass-half-full perspective.

From that viewpoint, this next generation is nothing short of an incredible resource. They are powerful assets to nurture in the workplace (and at home). Our meetings industry, by its very nature, thrives on collaboration. It is never the work of one person alone; it is the work of a team. Projects are cross-functional by design, with senior, mid-career and NextGen professionals overlapping every day. This gives us a marvellous blend of career stages, cultures, personalities, knowledge and experiences. The ideal scenario is to tap into this mix, fully embracing and involving the NextGen.

SIFO 2025 National Congress by AIM Group International The SIFO 2025 National Congress – dedicated to the theme ‘Protagonists of Change’ – brought more than 2,800 hospital pharmacy professionals to Genoa from 6 to 9 November, filling the Porto Antico Congress Centre with four days of scientific exchange, community engagement and crossdisciplinary activities.

The overarching theme of change, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence, guided the entire scientific programme. This year’s congress accepted 1,045 posters and ten oral communications – an extraordinary number that reflects the strong commitment of the community to scientific contribution and continuous knowledge-sharing.

The programme also featured a new edition of L.I.F.E. – the Interactive Laboratory for Expert Pharmacists, accredited for CME. Among the most appreciated elements was the return of the SIFO Village, an open-space arena within the exhibition area designed for short, smart sponsored talks.

November Reflections: Scientific Progress and International Collaboration with the signature of CONVIN This November, Athens successfully hosted two major international events that brought together leading experts from the fields of coaching and paediatric dentistry, highlighting the city’s role as a centre for scientific dialogue and professional advancement.

From 20–23 November 2025, the 15th ICCE Global Coach Conference took place at the Eugenides Foundation, organised by the International Council for Coaching Excellence in partnership with the Hellenic Federation of Sports Coaches and Trainers. With organisational support from CONVIN S.A., the conference focused on the theme ‘The Coach in a fast-advancing technological society – Developing skills for 2030 and beyond.' IAS 2027: Top HIV science meeting comes to global health hub of Geneva IAS 2027, the 14th IAS Conference on HIV Science, will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, and virtually from 11 to 15 July 2027, IAS – the International AIDS Society – announced. Around 5,000 people from more than 130 countries are expected to attend.

'We now have a game-changing toolkit that includes long-acting treatment and prevention options that could end the HIV pandemic,' IAS 2027 International Co-Chair and IAS President-Elect Kenneth Ngure said.

Ngure is an Associate Professor of Global Health and immediate former Dean of the School of Public Health at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya. 'But for many of the people who need them the most, these innovations remain behind a door locked by abiding access issues and shrinking funding.

Sustainability was woven into every aspect: eighty per cent of waste recycled, fifty-five per cent of materials repurposed or donated and one hundred per cent green electricity powering all operations at Messe Frankfurt.

A decade in the making The journey to bring Sibos to Frankfurt began in 2009, culminating in Swift’s 2023 announcement that Frankfurt would host the 2025 edition.
