POCHEISM: SEEING UNSEEN Westwood City Monastery and Community High-Rise Building

To reveal the relationship between hidden spaces and approach to the visible and the invisible of poche’, the section drawing would be a way to differentiate the exterior to the interior surfaces. Poche’s given physical meaning forms, rather than simply serves, as the solid area in architectural drawing. As we take Cluny monastery as an example, it makes poche’ evident for perception. The perimeter of Cluny forms the boundary of programmatic functions, creating a physical relationship of forms.

This approach does not represent the historical monastery in today’s city. Instead, it displays the conceptual poche’ as the “unseen” and becomes the perceptual poche’ as the “seen,” achieving mutual shapes of the exterior and the interior. Individual objects, which remain enclosed, keep the distance between each other in order to demonstrate outside of the inside objects and inside of the outside mass as poche’. By applying pixels figuration to each individual objects, the outer boundary of the interior are shaped, creating layers of interiority that each has different characteristics. Then, through architectural excavation, the unseen poche’ between spaces can be perceived.

The project challenge the compositional architectural assumptions and contemporary digital methodologies, which promote smoothing and indiscriminate continuity throughout the whole in order to redefine the current status of the icon. the project focus on the monolithicity of architecture by a series of masses and the apertures hiding in the urban context. By the means of planar projection in orthographic view with the choreographed drawing in material textures. The window create from the planar projection is literally incidental to the form which means that the window shapes will be extruded throughout the mass of the building. There is a relationship between windows and building form. The strategy of massing is to define the sculptural cutting operation simultaneously engaging with planar projection. Thus, the window become incident to the shape and creating the architecture contingency.

The ambivalent painting has ability to produce the new model of faciality through the projection techniques, challenging the perception of envelope between inside and outside. The outside of envelope has multi-directional stripe patterns with related coloration using the technique of planar projection from the three different directions around the site. Moreover, the geometry of the mass is cutted by the three of one point perspective view as well which allows each faรงade relate to each other and allow the pattern from the one face correspond or bleed to the other face.

The composition of interior is to create the two large open spaces which allows the design texture applies onto the inside surface. In order to relate to the illusionistic optical effect, the technique is to use the one point projection from the collagelike but pixelated coloration drawing on the surface.

This project is single family house that next to the Secession building in Vienna. The house, independent and free standing by itself, is an attachment to the secession building. The envelope acts a heavy container that opening to the site and building, opposites to the secession which is seamless and solid. The façade faces to the secession, park and sky to collapse itself creating the apertures and balcony.

The butchery mass alludes the chipped flowers and meat that peels the bones and fat from internal flesh. It could allow a non-distinct interaction between the exterior and interior.The bottom of the mass maintains the minimum area to touch the ground in order to create the environment from the back of park to the house providing the recreation area for pedestrian.

The lower level of house where contains the working studio for the maker, providing all kind of instrument and tool for making. The middle level as a maker’s living space where has a view toward the interior exhibition of secession inspiring the idea from the exhibition theme. The top level is private bathroom for family which have skylights from the top of roof.

The fractal can be used in architecture in both little and large scale such as a single building and an urban growth. Two characteristics of the fractal in little scale is the building’s self-similarity and box-counting dimension. The aim of my project is to present how the fractal geometry is to define a new architectural model and an aesthetic in different ways.

In this temporary urban void infilling project, the advisor guides us to apply a special concept which is called the fractal to deal with the urban issue.

The fractal can be used in architecture in both little and large scale such as a single building and an urban growth. Two characteristics of the fractal in little scale is the building’s self-similarity and box-counting dimension. I tried to figure out how to apply the fractal mechanism on a single building even more in urban issue.

In a city, if the speed of renewal and upgrade of urban architecture cannot follow the variation of times and economy, the city may encounter the fate of weakening and obsolete. In the situation of real estate in current Taiwan, the proportion of collection housing type is [more than other types of building. Moreover, current city has built numerous high-rise housings in order to pursue the benefits of economy. So, they sacrifice a lot of characters from climate conditions of Taiwan and urban context, causing the absence of community and alienation which strengthens the hierarchy. Admittedly, there is a question: why we tend to say nothing when we meet our neighbors? Why the best place for leisure is far away from our home instead of our backyard? Can we have comfortable neighborhood in the city? In my opinion, new models are needed.

The development of Taichung Gateway park and City will complete the north-west city park of Taichung City, allowing with more active networks and integrity in the region and emphasizing on the coexistence of nartural and human spirit. Functional buildings with comfortable open spaces in the park will become the model to be followed by major cities in Taiwan.

See the site as a huge chunk of dired wood, the idea of Taichung Gateway Park is trying to put the new branchs on the old bark. The aim is to find the energy to revitalize and turn it into platform for city activities and divelopment.

We open up the front and back roooms becoming study, kitchen, dining and living in an one axis, and also open the space to the other axis becoming more specious living room. we try to create a movable elements such as walls and TV furniture in the space in order to allowing the flexible use.

This is a single family house in a community. In this project, the initial plan is solid and lack of light on its circulation. The aim is to creating as much as natural light and allowing natural elements shch wind and sun into the whole area. We break down the solid stairs from underground living room to the top of private bedroom, and also open the room between each stair becoming a light one allowing the natural light coming into the dark and deep area.

The Design Documents seminar tried to find a new way to develope the project we have from previous project at the detail design phase through the 10 foot by 10 foot megadrawing that presenting different scales of architectural components. the pealing and chopping away of outer skins is a new techniques were used in order to represent each component between inner and outer of the building, and finding a better connection between joints with each components. In terms of the characteristics of our project building, we involved macro and micro chunks of different scales into our magadrawing to convey the relationship of the connection.

The envelope is a conspicuous characteristic of the project so we tried the various ways by using multiple techniques to represent the idea of the 3D printed panels of the envelope and giving the coloration to each panes based on the ides of texture map, finally, becoming 3D printable and buildable.

The average temperature of Santa Monica is highter than other city because the latitude of Santa Monica is 34.02 degree north. And the distance from ocean also reflects the temperature. Santa Monica is closed to pacific ocean which make the temperature of this area more cooler.

The mimium of thte humidity in Santa Monica is lower than other city, expecially on January. And the average of the humidity in Santa Monica is more dry.

The cloud cover reflects the heat of the temperature. The average of the cloud in Santa Monica is less than other city. Moreover, there doesn’t have the maximum of the cloud cover in Santa Monica, but the minium of the cloud cover occurs on April and November.

The chart shows that the solar angle on december 21 in the winter during the spring, also showing that there is east 55 degree bearing angle and 9 degree altitude angle in Santa Monica.

This project developed techniques which conflated the production complex scripted machines with explicitly modeled and analysed figures to enforce the notion of the autonomous machine as an extension and amplifier of the designers mind.

The project try to codify “incidental� geometric and color relationships in precedent paintings into multi-agent simulation behaviors. These systems were evaluated towards the effectiveness in the production of 2D graphic compositions which exposed eccentric stylistic traits while engaging issues of emergent composition.

The final project extended the systems into three dimensional form generators which engaged simultaneously developed explicit figures whose geometries derived from an understanding of the relationship between interior and exterior envelopes in baroque chapels. We attempted to use these systems to destabilize the thickness of the poche in their explicit figures and imply envelope and spatial organization through an accumulation of ornamental density, while blurring proto-architectural hierarchies through non-indexical reapplications of their 2D graphic generating systems.

Using collection of curves as a base, the robot created various felt pen graphics, this technique allows us to develop images created in multiple ways and styles in a computational manner.

Inverse kinematics refers to the use of the kinematics equations of a robot to determine the joint parameters that provide a desired position of the end-effector. Specification of the movement of a robot so that its end-effector achieves a desired task is known as motion planning.

The robot manipulator consists of a robot arm, wrist, and gripper. The task of the robot manipulator is to draw the specified curves by moving the pen attached through an end arm tool. In this way also the industrial robot needs to have six degrees of freedom. The segments of the robot arm are relatively long. The task of the robot arm is to provide the desired position of the robot end point. The segments of the robot wrist are rather short.The task of the robot wrist is to enable the required orientation of the pen grasped by the attached end arm tool.

In the digital world, computational operations are full with small glitches that produce unexpected behaviors, In Video games specifically, this glitches that occur due to the lack of information or processing power deform and distort the created environment producing funny or even creepy results. This same behavior can be observed in living organism as they experience muscle spasm or twitches. The goal of this exercise is to analyze the possibilities of the glitch and twitch as a generative tool for new mass qualities, and to introduce them in further stages of architecture.

This practice examines the potential of advanced modeling, animation, and robotic techniques to produce and represent complex geometries.

Taking advantage of a single platform, students would be introduced to the techniques to help them postulate, analyze, develop and present their design ideas.
