A word from our CEO

Amendments to the emerging artist funding program

Last year, the Board of The Ian Potter Cultural Trust initiated a detailed evaluation of the Trust's activities to assess how the Trust might improve the impact of its support of Australian artists. Having considered the findings, the Board has approved two fundamental changes to the nature and value of grants to emerging or early-career artists to enable them to undertake professional development opportunities.

Firstly, the maximum value of the emerging artist development grants has been

increased from $10,000 to $15,000, effective from Funding Round 1, 2023. This round is Subscribe Past Issues Translate currently open for applications.

Secondly, applicants may now seek funding to undertake a professional development project in Australia. In the circumstance that an opportunity within Australia is of high quality and can offer exceptional benefit to an individual's professional practice.

The Cultural Trust will continue to prioritise the funding of international professional development opportunities. You can read more about these amendments to the emerging artist funding program on the Cultural Trust website.

The evaluation of The Ian Potter Cultural Trust also proposed a variety of further grantmaking opportunities, which the Trustees continue to consider. The Trust's Board thanks all those who shared their experiences via participating in the evaluation's online surveys and interviews last year.

Lastly, I have recently announced my decision to resign from my position as Chief Executive Officer of The Ian Potter Cultural Trust and The Ian Potter Foundation. My tenure will cease around 31 January 2023, depending on the timing of the incoming CEO's appointment.

I want to express my gratitude to the Cultural Trust's Board, our team of dedicated staff, and the community of artists and arts professionals. It has been a privilege to witness the drive, passion, and resilience of Australian artists throughout my seven years as CEO of The Ian Potter Cultural Trust.

I am leaving this wonderful role knowing that the Cultural Trust's management is in the capable hands of Louise Joel, Program Manager, ably supported by Paula Cruz Manrique, Programs Officer, and Nina Beer, Communications and Engagement Coordinator.

Congratulations to the emerging artists who have been awarded Cultural Trust grants for the second Funding Round of 2022.

In the latest round, 13 emerging artists were awarded a total of $105,344 in grants. Our newest grantees will travel to eight countries undertaking professional development in their various disciplines, including theatre performance, poetry, and opera.

Nicole is being supported by a Cultural Trust grant to undertake a low-residency Masters of Fine Arts in Poetry at Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, USA. The low-residency program is the oldest and most prestigious in the United States and is widely known for its highly rigorous creative and analytical program.

Angela has been nominated for Feature Film Score of the Year in the 2022 APRAAGSC Screen Music Awards, and Best Original Score in Film in the 2022 Australian Academy of Cinema Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.
