Thegrantapplicationprocesscanbedaunting,especiallywhenyou’restartingout. Applyingforgrantsisalengthyprocess,witheachapplicationinvolvingdifferentcriteria andrequiringanindividualisedapproach.Nottomentionitcanbehardtoknowwhat opportunitiesareoutthere.Inrecognitionofthis,wehaveincorporatedaresidencyprofile sectioninTheCoronet,tospotlightsomeoftheresidencyprogramsundertakenbyour grantees.ThiseditionwefeaturetheArtelesCreativeResidencyProgram,inwhichfour pastCulturalTrustrecipientshaveparticipated.Infact,oneofthesegrantees,Peter Walsh,enlistedtheadviceofapastgranteeandfellowSydney-basedartistSissyReyesin theapplicationprocess.WeinterviewedPeteronhistimeatArteles,hisexperience applyingforgrants,andhowreachingoutforadvicefromfellowartistsandforming connectionscanbeavaluablewayofimprovingyourgrantapplicationskills.

OnethingwelookforinapplicationstotheCulturalTrustisevidenceofawell-crafted, multifacetedstudytourthatistailoredtothespecificpracticeoftheapplicant.Thiscan meanmentoringopportunitieswithestablishedartistsorexpertsworkingintheirareaof creativeinterest.Engagingaprospectivementorcanseemunrealisticorintimidatingfor some,whichiswhywehavefeaturedtwonewgrantees,CarolQueandMatthewLaing, whoareeachundertakinguniqueandself-initiatedmentorships.Weaskthemhowexactly theseopportunitiescameabout,andhowotheremergingartistscangoaboutcreating professionaldevelopmentopportunitiesforthemselves.

Wehopetheseprofilesandstoriescanserveasresourcesforotheremergingartists,to raiseawarenessoftheinternationalopportunitiesthatareavailable,andtoencourage themtobecreativeandinitiateopportunitieswherenonemightpresentlyexist.

Newgrantees

Thesecondfundingroundfor2018saw17emergingartistsawarded$143,194ingrants. Granteeswilltravelto12countries,includingFinland,China,ArgentinaandCanada, undertakingarangeofprofessionaldevelopmentprogramsinareassuchasvirtualreality technologies,comicart,documentaryfilmmaking,andmusiccomposition.

Thiseditionwehaveprofiledtwonewgranteeswhowillbeembarkingonone-on-one mentorships.CarolQuewillcompleteatwo-monthmentoringprogramwithglobally renownedarttheoristandcuratorCarolYinghuaLuinBeijing,whileMattLaingwillbe mentoredbymusicianandcomposerBrettDeanthroughtheprocessofcomposingtwo scores.

'I first met Carol Yinghua Lu at the University of Melbourne in 2016, when I helped organise and facilitate the first session of Asian Art Dialogue, now consistently programmed at the university As a young academic and creative, it was important for me to hear and learn from her those years ago, so I made the effort to stay in touch until the opportunity arose to collaborate.'

ImogenWaltersreceivedaCulturalTrustgrantlastyeartocompleteaneducational traineeshipattheBolshoiBalletAcademyinMoscow.Shehassinceauditionedandbeen acceptedintotheVaganovaAcademyofRussianBallet,oneofthemostprestigiousballet schoolsintheworld.

2015granteeLourisvandeGeerisoneofsevenwriterstobe awardedacommission throughMelbourneTheatreCompany'sNEXTSTAGEWriters'Program,whichwillallow hertodevelopanexcitingnewworkforthestage.
