CEO's welcome Welcome to the first edition of Campus for 2018.

It’s a new year, and already we have confirmed two new scholarship programs, along with a new dedicated Coordinator role for The George Alexander Foundation.

Over the last sixteen years The George Alexander Foundation has developed a strong national footprint. With a total of sixteen current scholarship and fellowship programs across Australia, we welcome a significant number of new scholars and fellows annually.

Subscribe Past Issues Translate However, given this growth, the time has arrived for The George Alexander Foundation to be managed by a dedicated staff member. We are delighted to announce that Mairead Phillips, previously our GAF Program Officer, will be stepping up into a new role as Program Coordinator for The George Alexander Foundation. While Program Manager Nicole Bortone will continue to oversee the Foundation’s activities, Mairead will be solely focused on the management and administration of the Foundation’s scholarship and fellowship programs. We wish Mairead all the best in this new and exciting role.

We’re also pleased to announce two new additions to the GAF Scholarship Program. The George Alexander Foundation Residential Scholarship Program at The University of Wollongong and The George Alexander Foundation Scholarship Program at Australian National University (ANU) will both focus on supporting high-achieving and communityminded students, in particular those from regional and rural areas, with the costs associated with moving from home to study at university. We look forward to welcoming our first groups of scholars from University of Wollongong and ANU in 2018.

GAF Trivia Night Last year we had the pleasure of seeing many of you at our alumni event at The State Library of Victoria, and this year we would like to give you the chance to get together again.

We will be hosting a trivia night in Melbourne this July for our scholars, fellows and alumni.

New scholarship programs

ANU, University of Wollongong join GAF We’re excited to announce that two new GAF scholarship programs will commence in 2018 at The University of Wollongong (UoW) and Australian National University (ANU).

The George Alexander Foundation Residential Scholarship Program at The University of Wollongong will provide five merit-based scholarships annually to undergraduate students beginning their first year of study. The program aims to support high achieving students, especially (though not exclusive to) those from regional and rural areas. The University of Wollongong is accepting applications until April 1, and you can visit their website for further details on how to apply.

The George Alexander Foundation Scholarship Program at Australian National University aims to assist students with the costs associated with moving away from home to study at ANU's Canberra campus. Applications for 2018 are now closed, and applications for 2019 will open later this year.

New scholars announced We're delighted to announce our first two groups of scholars for 2018, from Australian Natinonal University and RMIT University. Congratulations to Kay Best, Zachary Tisdale, Kieran Ayres, Anna Lewenhagen-Allvin, Catherine Kilpatrick, Emma Threadgold, Genevieve Batten and Lauren Ricci from RMIT; and Luke Croak, Madeleine Lezon, Eloise McLean, Simone De Nys and Finn Coleman from ANU. There are further announcements to come, so watch this space!

James Hicks ISSI Fellowship Update

Prue Rothwell Prue is passionate about local food movements and the Australian farmers' market industry.

She recently updated us on her fellowship trip to the US, during which she met with industry leaders and immersed herself in the US farmers' market culture.

James Hicks received a GAF scholarship in 2007, when he was studying Engineering and Business at Swinburne University.

Ten years on and the GAF scholarship continues to shape and inform James' career and aspirations. He wrote to us update us on his many achievements since graduating, which include recently being appointed Engineering Manager at Simplot's Echuca manufacturing plant.

GAF alumni Cassie Cohen continues to inspire and impress. Her most recent project Bounding Plains to Share was featured on Triple J's Hack, and it's no wonder why: Cassie and a friend, Jackson Bursill, ran 4000km from Cooktown to Melbourne, sharing the stories of Australians who arrived as a refugee or migrant along the way, all while raising funds for the Asylum Resource Centre. You can check out their website for more info.
