RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE
MANANSALA, IAN KARL V. UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS - COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AR. ANDREA AMADOR
I am Ian Karl V. Manansala, a first-year College of Architecture student at the University of Santo Tomas.
Studying Architecture was a natural choice for me, stemming from its unique blend of artistic expression and tangible impact on society. The ability to design spaces that not only serves a practical purpose but also a vision to the human eye resonates deeply with my desire to contribute to the built environment.
Within these pages are the evolution of my Architectural journey; from my earliest sketches to my most recent designs in Architectural Design 02
Plate1: AMiniDreamHouse
ACompetitionPlate
The first plate in Architectural Design 02 was one of the hardest plate I have experienced during my freshmen year It was our first competition plate with the theme “Heavenly Bodies” and was accomplishedbypair.
Together with my partner, we decided to conceptualize based on the Parting of the Red Sea that even though parting might be conceived as a negative aspect, in the end a good thing always awaits which is a perfect representation of the family who always endsupatthecomfortoftheirhouses.
We immediately knew that two separate masses or structure would be a great way to convey the ‘parting’ of the Red Sea. However, we had a hard time in figuring out how the roof of the house would look like. Initially, in our first draft model, the roof felt flat and did not really symbolized a wave Thus, back on the drawing board and after a handful of consultations with Ar. Amador, wefiguredoutabetterwaytoconstructtheroof.
Overall this plate was both tedious and fun especially in the creative aspect and learned a lot in terms of on how can we translate an inspiration into an actual design without it being too literalandobvious.

Plate2: AThemedBungalow
Thebriefofthisplatewasthatweneedtodesignabungalowthat is inspired by a specific style that is randomly drawn to everyone. I was lucky enough to have English Cottage as the theme of my bungalow.
At first I was nervous because the theme that I chose was not up my alley and have not yet explored enough of it However, with proper research and making my own mood and peg board, I somehow got the momentum going. The house features steeply pitched roof, bay windows, and stone and timber as materials whichareprominentinthestylesofEnglishCottages
During consultation, I learned the proper way to accommodate the car when the parking lot is at the rear end of the house. It will needtoturnwithaminimumradiusof35meters
Overall, this plate was one of the most fun plate to do because it allows you to be both constrained in a single style but also creativeonhowcanyouconveythatstylewithyourownflareand spin.
Plate3: AMulti-Generational Townhouse
The last plate of Architectural Design 02 for me was the hardest because this is my first time to have this much required outputs in one plate as a freshmen. At first it was overwhelming while reading the brief because there are so much things to consider which includes the three generations of family that needs to be cateredinthedesignandplanningofthetownhouse
During the first consultation, I had a hard time in zoning out the spaces and how can they be strategically placed within the house. However, with the comments, I figured out a way to divide them horizontally instead of vertically. I also learned all things about stairs which includes the correct dimensions, numbers and landings, andevensuperstitions
The design of the townhouse stems from my interest in incorporating greeneries and gardens in the house to offer relaxation, aesthetics, and comfort During the final presentation, a comment was raised by Ar. Amador that changed my perspective in designing which is that we need to modify the shapeandnotputdecorationsonit.Thismademerealizeandwill helpmeinthefuturedesignplatesthatwewillbedoing.
Reflection
Architectural Design 02 was a great experience in understanding the suitable and practical way in designing and planning houses for residential occupants. This semester taught me the importance of proper zoning of the different spaces in a houseandtheutilizationoftherequiredspaceoftheclient
Reflecting on the challenges I faced, I must admit that cramming was a major obstacle for me. Balancing multiple projects and deadlines often led to last-minute rushes, which impacted the quality of my work However, I recognize that this challenge was largely self-imposed and could have been mitigated with better time management strategies. Moving forward, I'm committed to improving my approach tomanagingmyworkload.Additionally,I'llseeksupportfrominstructors, collaborate withclassmates, andutilizeresourcestoenhancemyproductivityandefficiency.
I would 100% say that I improved a lot compared to AD1 especially in the layout and zoning of spaces of a structure and how can I place them strategically to reduce unnecessary and awkward spaces in a house. Looking back at the previous semester, I would just laugh at myself who often have a “dance floor” in some part of the house because of improper way of zoning out spaces. On the other hand, an area I want and will improve on is my presentation and rendering skills. I would say that I improved compared to the last semester but I think I haven’t reached my full potentialinthisaspect
Overall, Architectural Design 02 was a lively course and so much fun to experience. Notonlybecausethecoursewasinsightfulandfulloflearnings, theclusterwasalso interactiveandhasshownconnectionwitheachother
I would like to thank Ar. Amador for making this semester a worthwhile journey and aproductivetime.Untothenextchapter.
