Leader’s Note

I joined Crestron Asia 18 years ago. During this time, the company has grown from one office in Hong Kong with 12 employees to more than 20 offices and 300 employees all around Asia. A big challenge for our management team has been adapting to changes in company structure. Our duties have shifted from hands-on operation to delegation and then to supervision and management. In order to meet new requirements in managerial skills, the company has organized several training sessions and workshops to ensure our supervision and managerial skills keep up with our expansion. For example, delegation, motivation, coaching, meeting, employee appraisal, time management, objectives management and human resources management skills are implemented in different ways when applied to a larger scale.

Aside from enhancing personal skills, many of our regional offices have also needed expand to keep up with our growth. Our Hong Kong office expanded from 3,000 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft; our Beijing office from 2,800 sq ft to 9,000 sq ft; our Guangzhou office from 2,800 sq ft to 7,800 sq ft; our Shanghai office from 2,500 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft; our Singapore office from 1,700 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft. For our Bangalore office, we even built from scratch a 4-storey building with a rooftop cafeteria. The office expansions were not only to accommodate our growing workforce, but also to better demonstrate the power of Crestron systems—we built our first experience center in the Guangzhou office and our first show room in the Beijing office. Today, all of our offices are fully equipped with a demo room, a sizable training room and numerous meeting rooms to support our business operations.

We will continue to grow and expand, and our experience over the years has equipped us with the capacity to overcome any challenge we may face during the continuous development of Crestron Asia.

EDITOR’S MESSAGE

area photo area

Being a reporter with Crestron Asia Inspire Vol. 5 was an interesting experience. As a new member to our team, I was excited to participate in this project, especially because it was a fantastic opportunity for me to learn more about our company. I would like to thank my supervisor and colleagues for their kind assistance, without which I would not have had so much fun working on it. We had an amazing time putting together our fifth issue, and I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it.

It was a pleasure to write for the fifth issue of Crestron Asia Inspire. They say third time's a charm – I can definitely relate to that, as it was the third time I worked on this publication.

It has come a long way since I first worked on it during the first and second issues. Thanks to feedback from our readers, our quarterly newsletter has continued to improve, bringing you more relevant and interesting content. I'm positive that you will find our latest issue the most enjoyable one yet.

Listening Experience with Crestron HD-XSPA

Background

“The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils.” - William Shakespeare

If you are fascinated by any kind of the music, you probably yearn for crisp, clean sounds that enhance your audio experience. With all the recent advancements in technology, there has never been a better time to be an audiophile.

Crestron’s new 7.1 surround sound processor, HD-XSPA, brings professional-grade surround sound to conference rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, or any other space that demands uncompromised sound quality. The Crestron HD-XSPA also makes it easy to put great surround sound in any room of a home as part of a complete home automation and entertainment system.

Basic Features

Engineered with integration in mind, the HD-XSPA delivers clear sounds and powerful performance. It also includes advanced features, such as the ability to stream audio to different rooms and numerous ways to have complete control over the experience, including touchscreens, handheld remotes and mobile devices. In a single, compact 2U rack-mountable unit, the HD-XSPA packs a professional-grade 7.1 surround sound processor, high-efficiency eight-channel power amplifier, 4K Ultra HD video switcher, DigitalMedia™ receiver, and the innovative Crestron control interface.

The HD-XSPA supports all types of digital and analog sources, including Blu-ray Disc ® players, HDTV receivers, game consoles, computers, media servers and mobile devices. In addition, a DigitalMedia™ input port and a stereo downmix output port are included to facilitate integration with a whole-house AV system.

The HD-XSPA Advantage

With the HD-XSPA, you get cutting edge advantages that will rejuvenate your entire listening experience.

1. High-Definition Professional Surround Sound Processor

Great surround sound starts with a great processor. The HD-XSPA employs professional-grade decoding and signal processing to support the latest 7.1 digital formats, including Dolby® TrueHD, Dolby Digital® Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio™. The onboard DSP provides the sonic tools needed to maximize sound quality for each speaker within a room, including a choice of 9-band graphic or parametric EQ, plus trim, delay and crossover adjustments. Additional controls are provided for main volume, bass, treble, loudness, compression, and LFE. Advanced HDCP management ensures trouble-free handling of DRM-protected digital HD content.

2. High-Powered 7.1 Surround Sound Amplifier

The HD-XSPA delivers a generous amount of power from its onboard multichannel power amplifier. Each amp channel is capable of producing a gratifying 140 Watts at 8 Ohms, and 240 Watts at 4 Ohms.

The HD-XSPA also minimizes both rack space and floor space requirements by featuring eight full channels of robust amplification—powerful enough to drive a complete 7.1 speaker system and a passive in-wall subwoofer.

Top 6 Fallacies for Marathon Runners

Top 6 Fallacies for Marathon Runners

In recent years, running has become a popular choice of exercise all around the world, thanks to the mass promotions by sportswear companies and celebrities. In addition, more runners now wish to train and participate in long-distance running events like marathons. The Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon has become increasingly popular among runners; this year, it attracted more than 60,000 runners worldwide. However, many runners did not practice sufficiently before the competition, leading to varying degrees of injuries. Runners should understand the following top fallacies for runners to avoid physical discomfort.

1

The hard texture of basketball shoes is not suitable for running. Running requires shoes made with flexible materials. It is also important to choose shoes that suit a runner’s own style of running.

WEAR BASKETBALL SHOES FOR RUNNING WEAR MORE TO KEEP WARM

THINGS

2

It is not necessary to wear too much clothing. Some runners will wear a coat during cool weather, but it is better to wear a disposable raincoat or even a garbage bag to block the wind - it can also be disposed of at any time.

5

Adjust the warm-up and stretching time according to weather changes. DO EXCESSIVE WARM-UP

EXERCISES

http://www.mingpaohealth.com

Power Gel has different levels of concentration. While it generally provides the nutrients runners need, high concentrations will result in physical discomfort.

4

Many professional runners are accustomed to having rice for breakfast, but it is not the case for all runners. Wheat bread is another good choice for breakfast because it provides sufficient carbohydrates.

3

EAT LOTS OF RICE BEFORE A COMPETITION

Running primarily uses the lower limb, so a lot of runners’ stretching exercises only focus on legs, but the upper part of the body also needs warming-up. Otherwise, it will affect the entire upper-stretch running motion, resulting in poor movement rhythm and wasted energy.

6

TAKE HIGH-CONCENTRATIONS OF POWER GEL
JUST DO STRETCHING FOR THE LOWER LIMB

3D Printer

3D printing is quickly becoming the hottest printing technology in the world. While the revolutionary technology was invented in 1984, it was not until 2013 that it saw innovative products and services bring 3D printing to the mainstream. Mass production has significantly lowered the cost for 3D printers, for as little as US$2,000, you can easily create a physical object from almost any digital 3D model.

Safety Concerns

The popularity of 3D printing has, unfortunately, also lead to significant safety concerns. The concept and design for a functional, 3D-printed gun was released on the Internet in November 2013. This sparked debates among the public, questioning the safety issues brought by 3D printing and its potential to unleash wide availability of weapons and other dangerous objects that could be used for malicious intent.

Future Development

While plastics and metals are the most common materials used for 3D printing today, the technology has many more applications. NASA funded a US engineer with the goal to design and manufacture a 3D printer that could print food. If this research bears fruit, not only does it put tastier and more nutritious food on the plates of astronauts in space, it also makes long-term space travel, or even space colonization, more viable. More importantly, being able to print meat or vegetables could be the answer to solving some problems brought by unsustainable agriculture, a dysfunctional food system, and a rapidly growing population.
