1ThesecondbookoftheprophetEsdras,thesonof Saraias,thesonofAzarias,thesonofHelchias,thesonof Sadamias,thesonofSadoc,thesonofAchitob, 2ThesonofAchias,thesonofPhinees,thesonofHeli, thesonofAmarias,thesonofAziei,thesonofMarimoth, thesonofArna,thesonofOzias,thesonofBorith,theson ofAbisei,thesonofPhinees,thesonofEleazar, 3ThesonofAaron,ofthetribeofLevi;whichwascaptive inthelandoftheMedes,inthereignofArtexerxeskingof thePersians.

4AndthewordoftheLordcameuntome,saying, 5Gothyway,andshewmypeopletheirsinfuldeeds,and theirchildrentheirwickednesswhichtheyhavedone againstme;thattheymaytelltheirchildren'schildren: 6Becausethesinsoftheirfathersareincreasedinthem: fortheyhaveforgottenme,andhaveoffereduntostrange gods

7AmnotIevenhethatbroughtthemoutofthelandof Egypt,fromthehouseofbondage?buttheyhaveprovoked meuntowrath,anddespisedmycounsels

8Pullthouoffthenthehairofthyhead,andcastallevil uponthem,fortheyhavenotbeenobedientuntomylaw, butitisarebelliouspeople

9HowlongshallIforbearthem,intowhomIhavedoneso muchgood?

10ManykingshaveIdestroyedfortheirsakes;Pharaoh withhisservantsandallhispowerhaveIsmittendown

11AllthenationshaveIdestroyedbeforethem,andinthe eastIhavescatteredthepeopleoftwoprovinces,evenof TyrusandSidon,andhaveslainalltheirenemies.

12Speakthouthereforeuntothem,saying,Thussaiththe Lord,

13Iledyouthroughtheseaandinthebeginninggaveyou alargeandsafepassage;IgaveyouMosesforaleader, andAaronforapriest

14Igaveyoulightinapillaroffire,andgreatwonders haveIdoneamongyou;yethaveyeforgottenme,saiththe Lord

15ThussaiththeAlmightyLord,Thequailswereasa tokentoyou;Igaveyoutentsforyoursafeguard: neverthelessyemurmuredthere,

16Andtriumphednotinmynameforthedestructionof yourenemies,butevertothisdaydoyeyetmurmur

17WherearethebenefitsthatIhavedoneforyou?when yewerehungryandthirstyinthewilderness,didyenotcry untome,

18Saying,Whyhastthoubroughtusintothiswilderness tokillus?ithadbeenbetterforustohaveservedthe Egyptians,thantodieinthiswilderness

19ThenhadIpityuponyourmournings,andgaveyou mannatoeat;soyedideatangels'bread.

20Whenyewerethirsty,didInotcleavetherock,and watersflowedouttoyourfill?fortheheatIcoveredyou withtheleavesofthetrees.

21Idividedamongyouafruitfulland,Icastoutthe Canaanites,thePherezites,andthePhilistines,beforeyou: whatshallIyetdomoreforyou?saiththeLord.

22ThussaiththeAlmightyLord,Whenyewereinthe wilderness,intheriveroftheAmorites,beingathirst,and blasphemingmyname,

23Igaveyounotfireforyourblasphemies,butcastatree inthewater,andmadetheriversweet

24WhatshallIdountothee,OJacob?thou,Juda, wouldestnotobeyme:Iwillturnmetoothernations,and untothosewillIgivemyname,thattheymaykeepmy statutes.

25Seeingyehaveforsakenme,Iwillforsakeyoualso; whenyedesiremetobegraciousuntoyou,Ishallhaveno mercyuponyou.

26Whensoeveryeshallcalluponme,Iwillnothearyou: foryehavedefiledyourhandswithblood,andyourfeet areswifttocommitmanslaughter.

27Yehavenotasitwereforsakenme,butyourownselves, saiththeLord

28ThussaiththeAlmightyLord,HaveInotprayedyouas afatherhissons,asamotherherdaughters,andanurseher youngbabes,

29Thatyewouldbemypeople,andIshouldbeyourGod; thatyewouldbemychildren,andIshouldbeyourfather? 30Igatheredyoutogether,asahengatherethherchickens underherwings:butnow,whatshallIdountoyou?Iwill castyououtfrommyface

31Whenyeofferuntome,Iwillturnmyfacefromyou: foryoursolemnfeastdays,yournewmoons,andyour circumcisions,haveIforsaken

32Isentuntoyoumyservantstheprophets,whomyehave takenandslain,andtorntheirbodiesinpieces,whose bloodIwillrequireofyourhands,saiththeLord

33ThussaiththeAlmightyLord,Yourhouseisdesolate,I willcastyououtasthewinddothstubble

34Andyourchildrenshallnotbefruitful;fortheyhave despisedmycommandment,anddonethethingthatisan evilbeforeme

35YourhouseswillIgivetoapeoplethatshallcome; whichnothavingheardofmeyetshallbelieveme;to whomIhaveshewednosigns,yettheyshalldothatIhave commandedthem

36Theyhaveseennoprophets,yettheyshallcalltheirsins toremembrance,andacknowledgethem

37Itaketowitnessthegraceofthepeopletocome,whose littleonesrejoiceingladness:andthoughtheyhavenot seenmewithbodilyeyes,yetinspirittheybelievethe thingthatIsay

38Andnow,brother,beholdwhatglory;andseethe peoplethatcomefromtheeast:

39UntowhomIwillgiveforleaders,Abraham,Isaac,and Jacob,Oseas,Amos,andMicheas,Joel,Abdias,andJonas, 40Nahum,andAbacuc,Sophonias,Aggeus,Zachary,and Malachy,whichiscalledalsoanangeloftheLord

CHAPTER2

1ThussaiththeLord,Ibroughtthispeopleoutofbondage, andIgavethemmycommandmentsbymenservantsthe prophets;whomtheywouldnothear,butdespisedmy counsels.

2Themotherthatbarethemsaithuntothem,Goyourway, yechildren;forIamawidowandforsaken

3Ibroughtyouupwithgladness;butwithsorrowand heavinesshaveIlostyou:foryehavesinnedbeforethe LordyourGod,anddonethatthingthatisevilbeforehim

4ButwhatshallInowdountoyou?Iamawidowand forsaken:goyourway,Omychildren,andaskmercyof theLord.

5Asforme,Ofather,Icallupontheeforawitnessover themotherofthesechildren,whichwouldnotkeepmy covenant, 6Thatthoubringthemtoconfusion,andtheirmothertoa spoil,thattheremaybenooffspringofthem

7Letthembescatteredabroadamongtheheathen,lettheir namesbeputoutoftheearth:fortheyhavedespisedmy covenant

8Woebeuntothee,Assur,thouthathidesttheunrighteous inthee!Othouwickedpeople,rememberwhatIdidunto SodomandGomorrha;

9Whoselandliethinclodsofpitchandheapsofashes: evensoalsowillIdountothemthathearmenot,saiththe AlmightyLord

10ThussaiththeLorduntoEsdras,TellmypeoplethatI willgivethemthekingdomofJerusalem,whichIwould havegivenuntoIsrael

11TheirgloryalsowillItakeuntome,andgivethesethe everlastingtabernacles,whichIhadpreparedforthem

12Theyshallhavethetreeoflifeforanointmentofsweet savour;theyshallneitherlabour,norbeweary.

13Go,andyeshallreceive:prayforfewdaysuntoyou, thattheymaybeshortened:thekingdomisalready preparedforyou:watch.

14Takeheavenandearthtowitness;forIhavebrokenthe evilinpieces,andcreatedthegood:forIlive,saiththe Lord

15Mother,embracethychildren,andbringthemupwith gladness,maketheirfeetasfastasapillar:forIhave chosenthee,saiththeLord

16AndthosethatbedeadwillIraiseupagainfromtheir places,andbringthemoutofthegraves:forIhaveknown mynameinIsrael.

17Fearnot,thoumotherofthechildren:forIhavechosen thee,saiththeLord.

18ForthyhelpwillIsendmyservantsEsayandJeremy, afterwhosecounselIhavesanctifiedandpreparedforthee twelvetreesladenwithdiversfruits, 19Andasmanyfountainsflowingwithmilkandhoney, andsevenmightymountains,whereupontheregrowroses andlilies,wherebyIwillfillthychildrenwithjoy.

20Dorighttothewidow,judgeforthefatherless,giveto thepoor,defendtheorphan,clothethenaked, 21Healthebrokenandtheweak,laughnotalamemanto scorn,defendthemaimed,andlettheblindmancomeinto thesightofmyclearness

22Keeptheoldandyoungwithinthywalls.

23Wheresoeverthoufindestthedead,takethemandbury them,andIwillgivetheethefirstplaceinmyresurrection

24Abidestill,Omypeople,andtakethyrest,forthy quietnessstillcome

25Nourishthychildren,Othougoodnurse;stablishtheir feet.

26AsfortheservantswhomIhavegiventhee,thereshall notoneofthemperish;forIwillrequirethemfromamong thynumber.

27Benotweary:forwhenthedayoftroubleandheaviness cometh,othersshallweepandbesorrowful,butthoushalt bemerryandhaveabundance.

28Theheathenshallenvythee,buttheyshallbeabletodo nothingagainstthee,saiththeLord

29Myhandsshallcoverthee,sothatthychildrenshallnot seehell 30Bejoyful,Othoumother,withthychildren;forIwill deliverthee,saiththeLord.

31Rememberthychildrenthatsleep,forIshallbringthem outofthesidesoftheearth,andshewmercyuntothem:for Iammerciful,saiththeLordAlmighty.

32EmbracethychildrenuntilIcomeandshewmercyunto them:formywellsrunover,andmygraceshallnotfail 33IEsdrasreceivedachargeoftheLorduponthemount Oreb,thatIshouldgountoIsrael;butwhenIcameunto them,theysetmeatnought,anddespisedthe commandmentoftheLord.

34AndthereforeIsayuntoyou,Oyeheathen,thathear andunderstand,lookforyourShepherd,heshallgiveyou everlastingrest;forheisnighathand,thatshallcomein theendoftheworld

35Bereadytotherewardofthekingdom,forthe everlastinglightshallshineuponyouforevermore.

36Fleetheshadowofthisworld,receivethejoyfulnessof yourglory:ItestifymySaviouropenly.

37Oreceivethegiftthatisgivenyou,andbeglad,giving thanksuntohimthathathledyoutotheheavenlykingdom 38Ariseupandstand,beholdthenumberofthosethatbe sealedinthefeastoftheLord;

39Whicharedepartedfromtheshadowoftheworld,and havereceivedgloriousgarmentsoftheLord

40Takethynumber,OSion,andshutupthoseofthine thatareclothedinwhite,whichhavefulfilledthelawof theLord.

41Thenumberofthychildren,whomthoulongedstfor,is fulfilled:beseechthepoweroftheLord,thatthypeople, whichhavebeencalledfromthebeginning,maybe hallowed.

42IEsdrassawuponthemountSionagreatpeople,whom Icouldnotnumber,andtheyallpraisedtheLordwith songs

43Andinthemidstofthemtherewasayoungmanofa highstature,tallerthanalltherest,anduponeveryoneof theirheadshesetcrowns,andwasmoreexalted;whichI marvelledatgreatly

44SoIaskedtheangel,andsaid,Sir,whatarethese?

45Heansweredandsaiduntome,Thesebetheythathave putoffthemortalclothing,andputontheimmortal,and haveconfessedthenameofGod:nowaretheycrowned, andreceivepalms

46ThensaidIuntotheangel,Whatyoungpersonisitthat crowneththem,andgiveththempalmsintheirhands?

47Soheansweredandsaiduntome,ItistheSonofGod, whomtheyhaveconfessedintheworldThenbeganI greatlytocommendthemthatstoodsostifflyforthename oftheLord

48Thentheangelsaiduntome,Gothyway,andtellmy peoplewhatmannerofthings,andhowgreatwondersof theLordthyGod,thouhastseen

CHAPTER3

1InthethirtiethyearaftertheruinofthecityIwasin Babylon,andlaytroubleduponmybed,andmythoughts cameupovermyheart:

2ForIsawthedesolationofSion,andthewealthofthem thatdweltatBabylon

3Andmyspiritwassoremoved,sothatIbegantospeak wordsfulloffeartothemostHigh,andsaid, 4OLord,whobearestrule,thouspakestatthebeginning, whenthoudidstplanttheearth,andthatthyselfalone,and commandedstthepeople,

5AndgavestabodyuntoAdamwithoutsoul,whichwas theworkmanshipofthinehands,anddidstbreatheintohim thebreathoflife,andhewasmadelivingbeforethee

6Andthouleadesthimintoparadise,whichthyrighthand hadplanted,beforeevertheearthcameforward.

7Anduntohimthougavestcommandmenttolovethyway: whichhetransgressed,andimmediatelythouappointedst deathinhimandinhisgenerations,ofwhomcamenations, tribes,people,andkindreds,outofnumber 8Andeverypeoplewalkedaftertheirownwill,anddid wonderfulthingsbeforethee,anddespisedthy commandments

9Andagaininprocessoftimethoubroughtesttheflood uponthosethatdweltintheworld,anddestroyedstthem.

10Anditcametopassineveryofthem,thatasdeathwas toAdam,sowasthefloodtothese.

11Neverthelessoneofthemthouleftest,namely,Noah withhishousehold,ofwhomcameallrighteousmen

12Andithappened,thatwhentheythatdweltuponthe earthbegantomultiply,andhadgottenthemmany children,andwereagreatpeople,theybeganagaintobe moreungodlythanthefirst

13Nowwhentheylivedsowickedlybeforethee,thou didstchoosetheeamanfromamongthem,whosename wasAbraham.

14Himthoulovedst,anduntohimonlythoushewedstthy will:

15Andmadestaneverlastingcovenantwithhim, promisinghimthatthouwouldestneverforsakehisseed.

16AnduntohimthougavestIsaac,anduntoIsaacalso thougavestJacobandEsau.AsforJacob,thoudidst choosehimtothee,andputbyEsau:andsoJacobbecame agreatmultitude

17Anditcametopass,thatwhenthouleadesthisseedout ofEgypt,thoubroughtestthemuptothemountSinai

18Andbowingtheheavens,thoudidstsetfasttheearth, movedstthewholeworld,andmadestthedepthstotremble, andtroubledstthemenofthatage

19Andthyglorywentthroughfourgates,offire,andof earthquake,andofwind,andofcold;thatthoumightest givethelawuntotheseedofJacob,anddiligenceuntothe generationofIsrael

20Andyettookestthounotawayfromthemawicked heart,thatthylawmightbringforthfruitinthem

21ForthefirstAdambearingawickedhearttransgressed, andwasovercome;andsobealltheythatarebornofhim.

22Thusinfirmitywasmadepermanent;andthelaw(also) intheheartofthepeoplewiththemalignityoftheroot;so thatthegooddepartedaway,andtheevilabodestill.

23Sothetimespassedaway,andtheyearswerebroughtto anend:thendidstthouraisetheeupaservant,calledDavid: 24Whomthoucommandedsttobuildacityuntothyname, andtoofferincenseandoblationsuntotheetherein 25Whenthiswasdonemanyyears,thentheythat inhabitedthecityforsookthee,

26AndinallthingsdidevenasAdamandallhis generationshaddone:fortheyalsohadawickedheart: 27Andsothougavestthycityoverintothehandsofthine enemies 28AretheirdeedsthenanybetterthatinhabitBabylon, thattheyshouldthereforehavethedominionoverSion?

29ForwhenIcamethither,andhadseenimpietieswithout number,thenmysoulsawmanyevildoersinthisthirtieth year,sothatmyheartfailedme.

30ForIhaveseenhowthousufferestthemsinning,and hastsparedwickeddoers:andhastdestroyedthypeople, andhastpreservedthineenemies,andhastnotsignifiedit. 31Idonotrememberhowthiswaymaybeleft:Arethey thenofBabylonbetterthantheyofSion?

32Oristhereanyotherpeoplethatknoweththeebeside Israel?orwhatgenerationhathsobelievedthycovenants asJacob?

33Andyettheirrewardappearethnot,andtheirlabour hathnofruit:forIhavegonehereandtherethroughthe heathen,andIseethattheyflowinwealth,andthinknot uponthycommandments.

34Weighthouthereforeourwickednessnowinthe balance,andtheir'salsothatdwelltheworld;andsoshall thynamenowherebefoundbutinIsrael.

35Orwhenwasitthattheywhichdwellupontheearth havenotsinnedinthysight?orwhatpeoplehavesokept thycommandments?

36ThoushaltfindthatIsraelbynamehathkeptthy precepts;butnottheheathen

CHAPTER4

1Andtheangelthatwassentuntome,whosenamewas Uriel,gavemeananswer,

2Andsaid,Thyhearthathgonetofarinthisworld,and thinkestthoutocomprehendthewayofthemostHigh?

3ThensaidI,Yea,mylordAndheansweredme,andsaid, Iamsenttoshewtheethreeways,andtosetforththree similitudesbeforethee:

4Whereofifthoucanstdeclaremeone,Iwillshewthee alsothewaythatthoudesiresttosee,andIshallshewthee fromwhencethewickedheartcometh

5AndIsaid,Tellon,mylordThensaidheuntome,Go thyway,weighmetheweightofthefire,ormeasureme theblastofthewind,orcallmeagainthedaythatispast 6ThenansweredIandsaid,Whatmanisabletodothat, thatthoushouldestasksuchthingsofme?

7Andhesaiduntome,IfIshouldasktheehowgreat dwellingsareinthemidstofthesea,orhowmanysprings areinthebeginningofthedeep,orhowmanyspringsare abovethefirmament,orwhicharetheoutgoingsof paradise:

8Peradventurethouwouldestsayuntome,Ineverwent downintothedeep,norasyetintohell,neitherdidIever climbupintoheaven

9NeverthelessnowhaveIaskedtheebutonlyofthefire andwind,andofthedaywherethroughthouhastpassed, andofthingsfromwhichthoucanstnotbeseparated,and yetcanstthougivemenoanswerofthem.

10Hesaidmoreoveruntome,Thineownthings,andsuch asaregrownupwiththee,canstthounotknow;

11Howshouldthyvesselthenbeabletocomprehendthe wayoftheHighest,and,theworldbeingnowoutwardly

corruptedtounderstandthecorruptionthatisevidentinmy sight?

12ThensaidIuntohim,Itwerebetterthatwewerenotat all,thanthatweshouldlivestillinwickedness,andto suffer,andnottoknowwherefore

13Heansweredme,andsaid,Iwentintoaforestintoa plain,andthetreestookcounsel,

14Andsaid,Come,letusgoandmakewaragainstthesea thatitmaydepartawaybeforeus,andthatwemaymake usmorewoods

15Thefloodsoftheseaalsoinlikemannertookcounsel, andsaid,Come,letusgoupandsubduethewoodsofthe plain,thattherealsowemaymakeusanothercountry

16Thethoughtofthewoodwasinvain,forthefirecame andconsumedit.

17Thethoughtofthefloodsoftheseacamelikewiseto nought,forthesandstoodupandstoppedthem

18Ifthouwertjudgenowbetwixtthesetwo,whom wouldestthoubegintojustify?orwhomwouldestthou condemn?

19Iansweredandsaid,Verilyitisafoolishthoughtthat theybothhavedevised,forthegroundisgivenuntothe wood,andtheseaalsohathhisplacetobearhisfloods.

20Thenansweredheme,andsaid,Thouhastgivenaright judgment,butwhyjudgestthounotthyselfalso?

21Forlikeasthegroundisgivenuntothewood,andthe seatohisfloods:evensotheythatdwellupontheearth mayunderstandnothingbutthatwhichisupontheearth: andhethatdwellethabovetheheavensmayonly understandthethingsthatareabovetheheightofthe heavens

22ThenansweredIandsaid,Ibeseechthee,OLord,let mehaveunderstanding:

23Foritwasnotmymindtobecuriousofthehighthings, butofsuchaspassbyusdaily,namely,whereforeIsraelis givenupasareproachtotheheathen,andforwhatcause thepeoplewhomthouhastlovedisgivenoverunto ungodlynations,andwhythelawofourforefathersis broughttonought,andthewrittencovenantscometonone effect,

24Andwepassawayoutoftheworldasgrasshoppers,and ourlifeisastonishmentandfear,andwearenotworthyto obtainmercy

25Whatwillhethendountohisnamewherebyweare called?ofthesethingshaveIasked

26Thenansweredheme,andsaid,Themorethou searchest,themorethoushaltmarvel;fortheworldhasteth fasttopassaway,

27Andcannotcomprehendthethingsthatarepromisedto therighteousintimetocome:forthisworldisfullof unrighteousnessandinfirmities

28Butasconcerningthethingswhereofthouaskestme,I willtellthee;fortheevilissown,butthedestruction thereofisnotyetcome

29Ifthereforethatwhichissownbenotturnedupside down,andiftheplacewheretheevilissownpassnot away,thencannotitcomethatissownwithgood

30Forthegrainofevilseedhathbeensownintheheartof Adamfromthebeginning,andhowmuchungodlinesshath itbroughtupuntothistime?andhowmuchshallityet bringforthuntilthetimeofthreshingcome?

31Pondernowbythyself,howgreatfruitofwickedness thegrainofevilseedhathbroughtforth

32Andwhentheearsshallbecutdown,whicharewithout number,howgreatafloorshalltheyfill?

33ThenIansweredandsaid,How,andwhenshallthese thingscometopass?whereforeareouryearsfewandevil?

34Andheansweredme,saying,Donotthouhastenabove themostHighest:forthyhasteisinvaintobeabovehim, forthouhastmuchexceeded

35Didnotthesoulsalsooftherighteousaskquestionof thesethingsintheirchambers,saying,HowlongshallI hopeonthisfashion?whencomeththefruitofthefloorof ourreward?

36AnduntothesethingsUrielthearchangelgavethem answer,andsaid,Evenwhenthenumberofseedsisfilled inyou:forhehathweighedtheworldinthebalance

37Bymeasurehathhemeasuredthetimes;andbynumber hathhenumberedthetimes;andhedothnotmovenorstir them,untilthesaidmeasurebefulfilled

38ThenansweredIandsaid,OLordthatbearestrule, evenweallarefullofimpiety

39Andforoursakesperadventureitisthatthefloorsof therighteousarenotfilled,becauseofthesinsofthemthat dwellupontheearth

40Soheansweredme,andsaid,Gothywaytoawoman withchild,andaskofherwhenshehathfulfilledhernine months,ifherwombmaykeepthebirthanylongerwithin her

41ThensaidI,No,Lord,thatcanshenot.Andhesaid untome,Inthegravethechambersofsoulsarelikethe wombofawoman:

42Forlikeasawomanthattravailethmakethhasteto escapethenecessityofthetravail:evensodotheseplaces hastetodeliverthosethingsthatarecommitteduntothem.

43Fromthebeginning,look,whatthoudesiresttosee,it shallbeshewedthee

44ThenansweredIandsaid,IfIhavefoundfavourinthy sight,andifitbepossible,andifIbemeettherefore, 45Shewmethenwhethertherebemoretocomethanis past,ormorepastthanistocome.

46WhatispastIknow,butwhatisfortocomeIknownot 47Andhesaiduntome,Standupupontherightside,andI shallexpoundthesimilitudeuntothee.

48SoIstood,andsaw,and,behold,anhotburningoven passedbybeforeme:andithappenedthatwhentheflame wasgonebyIlooked,and,behold,thesmokeremained still

49Afterthistherepassedbybeforemeawaterycloud,and sentdownmuchrainwithastorm;andwhenthestormy rainwaspast,thedropsremainedstill

50Thensaidheuntome,Considerwiththyself;astherain ismorethanthedrops,andasthefireisgreaterthanthe smoke;butthedropsandthesmokeremainbehind:sothe quantitywhichispastdidmoreexceed

51ThenIprayed,andsaid,MayIlive,thinkestthou,until thattime?orwhatshallhappeninthosedays?

52Heansweredme,andsaid,Asforthetokenswhereof thouaskestme,Imaytelltheeoftheminpart:butas touchingthylife,Iamnotsenttoshewthee;forIdonot knowit

CHAPTER5

1Neverthelessascomingthetokens,behold,thedaysshall come,thattheywhichdwelluponearthshallbetakenina

greatnumber,andthewayoftruthshallbehidden,andthe landshallbebarrenoffaith

2Butiniquityshallbeincreasedabovethatwhichnow thouseest,orthatthouhastheardlongago

3Andtheland,thatthouseestnowtohaveroot,shaltthou seewastedsuddenly.

4ButifthemostHighgranttheetolive,thoushaltsee afterthethirdtrumpetthatthesunshallsuddenlyshine againinthenight,andthemoonthriceintheday:

5Andbloodshalldropoutofwood,andthestoneshall givehisvoice,andthepeopleshallbetroubled:

6EvensothetimesalsooftheHighesthaveplain beginningsinwonderandpowerfulworks,andendingsin effectsandsigns.

7Andeveryonethatshallbesaved,andshallbeableto escapebyhisworks,andbyfaith,wherebyyehave believed,

8Shallbepreservedfromthesaidperils,andshallseemy salvationinmyland,andwithinmyborders:forIhave sanctifiedthemformefromthebeginning.

9Thenshalltheybeinpitifulcase,whichnowhaveabused myways:andtheythathavecastthemawaydespitefully shalldwellintorments.

10Forsuchasintheirlifehavereceivedbenefits,andhave notknownme;

11Andtheythathaveloathedmylaw,whiletheyhadyet liberty,and,whenasyetplaceofrepentancewasopenunto them,understoodnot,butdespisedit;

12Thesamemustknowitafterdeathbypain.

CHAPTER12

1Anditcametopass,whilesthelionspakethesewords untotheeagle,Isaw, 2And,behold,theheadthatremainedandthefourwings appearednomore,andthetwowentuntoitandset themselvesuptoreign,andtheirkingdomwassmall,and fillofuproar.

3AndIsaw,and,behold,theyappearednomore,andthe wholebodyoftheeaglewasburntsothattheearthwasin greatfear:thenawakedIoutofthetroubleandtranceof mymind,andfromgreatfear,andsaiduntomyspirit, 4Lo,thishastthoudoneuntome,inthatthousearchestout thewaysoftheHighest.

5Lo,yetamIwearyinmymind,andveryweakinmy spirit;andlittlestrengthisthereinme,forthegreatfear wherewithIwasafflictedthisnight.

6ThereforewillInowbeseechtheHighest,thathewill comfortmeuntotheend

7AndIsaid,Lordthatbearestrule,ifIhavefoundgrace beforethysight,andifIamjustifiedwiththeebeforemany others,andifmyprayerindeedbecomeupbeforethyface; 8Comfortmethen,andshewmethyservantthe interpretationandplaindifferenceofthisfearfulvision, thatthoumayestperfectlycomfortmysoul.

9Forthouhastjudgedmeworthytoshewmethelasttimes 10Andhesaiduntome,Thisistheinterpretationofthe vision:

11Theeagle,whomthousawestcomeupfromthesea,is thekingdomwhichwasseeninthevisionofthybrother Daniel.

12Butitwasnotexpoundeduntohim,thereforenowI declareituntothee

13Behold,thedayswillcome,thatthereshallriseupa kingdomuponearth,anditshallbefearedaboveallthe kingdomsthatwerebeforeit

14Inthesameshalltwelvekingsreign,oneafteranother:

15Whereofthesecondshallbegintoreign,andshallhave moretimethananyofthetwelve

16Andthisdothetwelvewingssignify,whichthousawest.

17Asforthevoicewhichthouheardestspeak,andthat thousawestnottogooutfromtheheadsbutfromthemidst ofthebodythereof,thisistheinterpretation:

18Thatafterthetimeofthatkingdomthereshallarise greatstrivings,anditshallstandinperiloffailing: neverthelessitshallnotthenfall,butshallberestored againtohisbeginning

19Andwhereasthousawesttheeightsmallunderfeathers stickingtoherwings,thisistheinterpretation:

20Thatinhimthereshallariseeightkings,whosetimes shallbebutsmall,andtheiryearsswift

21Andtwoofthemshallperish,themiddletime approaching:fourshallbekeptuntiltheirendbeginto approach:buttwoshallbekeptuntotheend

22Andwhereasthousawestthreeheadsresting,thisisthe interpretation:

23InhislastdaysshallthemostHighraiseupthree kingdoms,andrenewmanythingstherein,andtheyshall havethedominionoftheearth, 24Andofthosethatdwelltherein,withmuchoppression, aboveallthosethatwerebeforethem:thereforearethey calledtheheadsoftheeagle.

25Forthesearetheythatshallaccomplishhiswickedness, andthatshallfinishhislastend

26Andwhereasthousawestthatthegreatheadappeared nomore,itsignifieththatoneofthemshalldieuponhis bed,andyetwithpain

27Forthetwothatremainshallbeslainwiththesword.

28Fortheswordoftheoneshalldevourtheother:butat thelastshallhefallthroughtheswordhimself

3AndIbeheld,and,lo,thatmanwaxedstrongwiththe thousandsofheaven:andwhenheturnedhiscountenance tolook,allthethingstrembledthatwereseenunderhim.

4Andwhensoeverthevoicewentoutofhismouth,allthey burnedthatheardhisvoice,likeastheearthfailethwhenit feeleththefire.

5AndafterthisIbeheld,and,lo,therewasgathered togetheramultitudeofmen,outofnumber,fromthefour windsoftheheaven,tosubduethemanthatcameoutof thesea

6ButIbeheld,and,lo,hehadgravedhimselfagreat mountain,andflewupuponit

7ButIwouldhaveseentheregionorplacewhereoutthe hillwasgraven,andIcouldnot.

8AndafterthisIbeheld,and,lo,alltheywhichwere gatheredtogethertosubduehimweresoreafraid,andyet durstfight.

9And,lo,ashesawtheviolenceofthemultitudethat came,heneitherlifteduphishand,norheldsword,norany instrumentofwar:

10ButonlyIsawthathesentoutofhismouthasithad beenablastoffire,andoutofhislipsaflamingbreath,and outofhistonguehecastoutsparksandtempests.

11Andtheywereallmixedtogether;theblastoffire,the flamingbreath,andthegreattempest;andfellwith violenceuponthemultitudewhichwaspreparedtofight, andburnedthemupeveryone,sothatuponasuddenofan innumerablemultitudenothingwastobeperceived,but onlydustandsmellofsmoke:whenIsawthisIwasafraid.

12AfterwardsawIthesamemancomedownfromthe mountain,andcalluntohimanotherpeaceableMultitude 13Andtherecamemuchpeopleuntohim,whereofsome wereglad,someweresorry,andsomeofthemwerebound, andothersomebroughtofthemthatwereoffered:then wasIsickthroughgreatfear,andIawaked,andsaid, 14Thouhastshewedthyservantthesewondersfromthe beginning,andhastcountedmeworthythatthoushouldest receivemyprayer:

15Shewmenowyettheinterpretationofthisdream 16ForasIconceiveinmineunderstanding,woeuntothem thatshallbeleftinthosedaysandmuchmorewoeunto themthatarenotleftbehind!

18NowunderstandIthethingsthatarelaidupinthelatter days,whichshallhappenuntothem,andtothosethatare leftbehind.

20Yetisiteasierforhimthatisindangertocomeinto thesethings,thantopassawayasacloudoutoftheworld, andnottoseethethingsthathappeninthelastdaysAnd heanswereduntome,andsaid, 21TheinterpretationofthevisionshallIshewthee,andI willopenuntotheethethingthatthouhastrequired 22Whereasthouhastspokenofthemthatareleftbehind, thisistheinterpretation:

23Hethatshallenduretheperilinthattimehathkept himself:theythatbefallenintodangeraresuchashave works,andfaithtowardtheAlmighty 24Knowthistherefore,thattheywhichbeleftbehindare moreblessedthantheythatbedead.

25Thisisthemeaningofthevision:Whereasthousawest amancomingupfromthemidstofthesea:

26ThesameishewhomGodtheHighesthathkeptagreat season,whichbyhisownselfshalldeliverhiscreature: andheshallorderthemthatareleftbehind.

27Andwhereasthousawest,thatoutofhismouththere cameasablastofwind,andfire,andstorm;

28Andthatheheldneithersword,noranyinstrumentof war,butthattherushinginofhimdestroyedthewhole multitudethatcametosubduehim;thisistheinterpretation: 29Behold,thedayscome,whenthemostHighwillbegin todeliverthemthatareupontheearth

30Andheshallcometotheastonishmentofthemthat dwellontheearth.

31Andoneshallundertaketofightagainstanother,one cityagainstanother,oneplaceagainstanother,onepeople againstanother,andonerealmagainstanother.

32Andthetimeshallbewhenthesethingsshallcometo pass,andthesignsshallhappenwhichIshewedthee before,andthenshallmySonbedeclared,whomthou sawestasamanascending

33Andwhenallthepeoplehearhisvoice,everymanshall intheirownlandleavethebattletheyhaveoneagainst another

34Andaninnumerablemultitudeshallbegathered together,asthousawestthem,willingtocome,andto overcomehimbyfighting

41Buttheytookthiscounselamongthemselves,thatthey wouldleavethemultitudeoftheheathen,andgoforthinto afurthercountry,wherenevermankinddwelt, 42Thattheymighttherekeeptheirstatutes,whichthey neverkeptintheirownland

43AndtheyenteredintoEuphratesbythenarrowplacesof theriver

44ForthemostHighthenshewedsignsforthem,andheld stilltheflood,tilltheywerepassedover.

45Forthroughthatcountrytherewasagreatwaytogo, namely,ofayearandahalf:andthesameregioniscalled Arsareth.

3Fearnottheimaginationsagainstthee,letnotthe incredulityofthemtroublethee,thatspeakagainstthee.

4Foralltheunfaithfulshalldieintheirunfaithfulness

5Behold,saiththeLord,Iwillbringplaguesuponthe world;thesword,famine,death,anddestruction.

6Forwickednesshathexceedinglypollutedthewhole earth,andtheirhurtfulworksarefulfilled

7ThereforesaiththeLord,

8Iwillholdmytonguenomoreastouchingtheir wickedness,whichtheyprofanelycommit,neitherwillI suffertheminthosethings,inwhichtheywickedly exercisethemselves:behold,theinnocentandrighteous bloodcriethuntome,andthesoulsofthejustcomplain continually.

43AndtheyshallgostedfastlyuntoBabylon,andmake herafraid

44Theyshallcometoher,andbesiegeher,thestarandall wrathshalltheypouroutuponher:thenshallthedustand smokegoupuntotheheaven,andalltheythatbeabouther shallbewailher.

45Andtheythatremainunderhershalldoserviceunto themthathaveputherinfear

46Andthou,Asia,thatartpartakerofthehopeofBabylon, andartthegloryofherperson:

47Woebeuntothee,thouwretch,becausethouhastmade thyselflikeuntoher;andhastdeckedthydaughtersin whoredom,thattheymightpleaseandgloryinthylovers, whichhavealwaysdesiredtocommitwhoredomwiththee 48Thouhastfollowedherthatishatedinallherworksand inventions:thereforesaithGod,

49Iwillsendplaguesuponthee;widowhood,poverty, famine,sword,andpestilence,towastethyhouseswith destructionanddeath

50AndthegloryofthyPowershallbedriedupasaflower, theheatshallarisethatissentoverthee.

51Thoushaltbeweakenedasapoorwomanwithstripes, andasonechastisedwithwounds,sothatthemightyand loversshallnotbeabletoreceivethee.

52WouldIwithjealousyhavesoproceededagainstthee, saiththeLord,

53Ifthouhadstnotalwaysslainmychosen,exaltingthe strokeofthinehands,andsayingovertheirdead,when thouwastdrunken,

54Setforththebeautyofthycountenance?

55Therewardofthywhoredomshallbeinthybosom, thereforeshaltthoureceiverecompence

56Likeasthouhastdoneuntomychosen,saiththeLord, evensoshallGoddountothee,andshalldelivertheeinto mischief

57Thychildrenshalldieofhunger,andthoushaltfall throughthesword:thycitiesshallbebrokendown,andall thineshallperishwiththeswordinthefield.

58Theythatbeinthemountainsshalldieofhunger,and eattheirownflesh,anddrinktheirownblood,forvery hungerofbread,andthirstofwater.

59Thouasunhappyshaltcomethroughthesea,and receiveplaguesagain

60Andinthepassagetheyshallrushontheidlecity,and shalldestroysomeportionofthyland,andconsumepartof thyglory,andshallreturntoBabylonthatwasdestroyed

61Andthoushaltbecastdownbythemasstubble,and theyshallbeuntotheeasfire;

62Andshallconsumethee,andthycities,thyland,andthy mountains;allthywoodsandthyfruitfultreesshallthey burnupwithfire

2Girdupyourselveswithclothsofsackandhair,bewail yourchildren,andbesorry;foryourdestructionisathand 3Aswordissentuponyou,andwhomayturnitback?

4Afireissentamongyou,andwhomayquenchit?

5Plaguesaresentuntoyou,andwhatishethatmaydrive themaway?

6Mayanymandriveawayanhungrylioninthewood?or mayanyonequenchthefireinstubble,whenithathbegun toburn?

7Mayoneturnagainthearrowthatisshotofastrong archer?

8ThemightyLordsendeththeplaguesandwhoishethat candrivethemaway?

9Afireshallgoforthfromhiswrath,andwhoishethat mayquenchit?

10Heshallcastlightnings,andwhoshallnotfear?heshall thunder,andwhoshallnotbeafraid?

11TheLordshallthreaten,andwhoshallnotbeutterly beatentopowderathispresence?

12Theearthquaketh,andthefoundationsthereof;thesea arisethupwithwavesfromthedeep,andthewavesofit aretroubled,andthefishesthereofalso,beforetheLord, andbeforethegloryofhispower:

13Forstrongishisrighthandthatbendeththebow,his arrowsthatheshootetharesharp,andshallnotmiss,when theybegintobeshotintotheendsoftheworld.

14Behold,theplaguesaresent,andshallnotreturnagain, untiltheycomeupontheearth

15Thefireiskindled,andshallnotbeputout,tillit consumethefoundationoftheearth

16Likeasanarrowwhichisshotofamightyarcher returnethnotbackward:evensotheplaguesthatshallbe sentuponearthshallnotreturnagain

17Woeisme!woeisme!whowilldelivermeinthose days?

18Thebeginningofsorrowsandgreatmournings;the beginningoffamineandgreatdeath;thebeginningofwars, andthepowersshallstandinfear;thebeginningofevils! whatshallIdowhentheseevilsshallcome?

19Behold,famineandplague,tribulationandanguish,are sentasscourgesforamendment.

20Butforallthesethingstheyshallnotturnfromtheir wickedness,norbealwaysmindfulofthescourges 21Behold,victualsshallbesogoodcheapuponearth,that theyshallthinkthemselvestobeingoodcase,andeven thenshallevilsgrowuponearth,sword,famine,andgreat confusion.

22Formanyofthemthatdwelluponearthshallperishof famine;andtheother,thatescapethehunger,shallthe sworddestroy.

23Andthedeadshallbecastoutasdung,andthereshall benomantocomfortthem:fortheearthshallbewasted, andthecitiesshallbecastdown.

24Thereshallbenomanlefttotilltheearth,andtosowit 25Thetreesshallgivefruit,andwhoshallgatherthem? 26Thegrapesshallripen,andwhoshalltreadthem?forall placesshallbedesolateofmen:

27Sothatonemanshalldesiretoseeanother,andtohear hisvoice.

28Forofacitythereshallbetenleft,andtwoofthefield, whichshallhidethemselvesinthethickgroves,andinthe cleftsoftherocks.

29AsinanorchardofOlivesuponeverytreethereareleft threeorfourolives;

30Oraswhenavineyardisgathered,thereareleftsome clustersofthemthatdiligentlyseekthroughthevineyard:

31Evensointhosedaysthereshallbethreeorfourleftby themthatsearchtheirhouseswiththesword

32Andtheearthshallbelaidwaste,andthefieldsthereof shallwaxold,andherwaysandallherpathsshallgrow fullofthorns,becausenomanshalltraveltherethrough.

33Thevirginsshallmourn,havingnobridegrooms;the womenshallmourn,havingnohusbands;theirdaughters shallmourn,havingnohelpers

34Inthewarsshalltheirbridegroomsbedestroyed,and theirhusbandsshallperishoffamine.

35Hearnowthesethingsandunderstandthem,yeservants oftheLord

36Behold,thewordoftheLord,receiveit:believenotthe godsofwhomtheLordspake

37Behold,theplaguesdrawnigh,andarenotslack

38Aswhenawomanwithchildintheninthmonth bringethforthherson,withtwoorthreehoursofherbirth greatpainscompassherwomb,whichpains,whenthe childcomethforth,theyslacknotamoment:

39Evensoshallnottheplaguesbeslacktocomeuponthe earth,andtheworldshallmourn,andsorrowsshallcome uponitoneveryside.

40Omypeople,hearmyword:makeyoureadytothy battle,andinthoseevilsbeevenaspilgrimsupontheearth 41Hethatselleth,lethimbeashethatfleethaway:andhe thatbuyeth,asonethatwilllose:

42Hethatoccupiethmerchandise,ashethathathnoprofit byit:andhethatbuildeth,ashethatshallnotdwelltherein:

43Hethatsoweth,asifheshouldnotreap:soalsohethat planteththevineyard,ashethatshallnotgatherthegrapes: 44Theythatmarry,astheythatshallgetnochildren;and theythatmarrynot,asthewidowers

45Andthereforetheythatlabourlabourinvain: 46Forstrangersshallreaptheirfruits,andspoiltheir goods,overthrowtheirhouses,andtaketheirchildren captives,forincaptivityandfamineshalltheygetchildren

47Andtheythatoccupytheirmerchandisewithrobbery, themoretheydecktheircities,theirhouses,their possessions,andtheirownpersons:

48ThemorewillIbeangrywiththemfortheirsin,saith theLord.

49Likeasawhoreenvietharighthonestandvirtuous woman:

50Soshallrighteousnesshateiniquity,whenshedecketh herself,andshallaccusehertoherface,whenhecometh thatshalldefendhimthatdiligentlysearchethouteverysin uponearth.

51Andthereforebeyenotlikethereunto,nortotheworks thereof

52Foryetalittle,andiniquityshallbetakenawayoutof theearth,andrighteousnessshallreignamongyou

53Letnotthesinnersaythathehathnotsinned:forGod shallburncoalsoffireuponhishead,whichsaithbefore theLordGodandhisglory,Ihavenotsinned

54Behold,theLordknowethalltheworksofmen,their imaginations,theirthoughts,andtheirhearts:

55Whichspakebuttheword,Lettheearthbemade;andit wasmade:Lettheheavenbemade;anditwascreated 56Inhiswordwerethestarsmade,andheknoweththe numberofthem

57Hesearcheththedeep,andthetreasuresthereof;hehath measuredthesea,andwhatitcontaineth

58Hehathshuttheseainthemidstofthewaters,andwith hiswordhathhehangedtheearthuponthewaters.

59Hespreadethouttheheavenslikeavault;uponthe watershathhefoundedit

60Inthedeserthathhemadespringsofwater,andpools uponthetopsofthemountains,thatthefloodsmightpour downfromthehighrockstowatertheearth

61Hemademan,andputhisheartinthemidstofthebody, andgavehimbreath,life,andunderstanding 62YeaandtheSpiritofAlmightyGod,whichmadeall things,andsearchethoutallhiddenthingsinthesecretsof theearth,

63Surelyheknowethyourinventions,andwhatyethink inyourhearts,eventhemthatsin,andwouldhidetheirsin.

64ThereforehaththeLordexactlysearchedoutallyour works,andhewillputyoualltoshame

65Andwhenyoursinsarebroughtforth,yeshallbe ashamedbeforemen,andyourownsinsshallbeyour accusersinthatday

66Whatwillyedo?orhowwillyehideyoursinsbefore Godandhisangels?

67Behold,Godhimselfisthejudge,fearhim:leaveoff fromyoursins,andforgetyouriniquities,tomeddleno morewiththemforever:soshallGodleadyouforth,and deliveryoufromalltrouble

68For,behold,theburningwrathofagreatmultitudeis kindledoveryou,andtheyshalltakeawaycertainofyou, andfeedyou,beingidle,withthingsoffereduntoidols

69Andtheythatconsentuntothemshallbehadinderision andinreproach,andtroddenunderfoot

70Forthereshallbeineveryplace,andinthenextcities,a greatinsurrectionuponthosethatfeartheLord.

71Theyshallbelikemadmen,sparingnone,butstill spoilinganddestroyingthosethatfeartheLord

72Fortheyshallwasteandtakeawaytheirgoods,andcast themoutoftheirhouses

73Thenshalltheybeknown,whoaremychosen;andthey shallbetriedasthegoldinthefire.

74Hear,Oyemybeloved,saiththeLord:behold,thedays oftroubleareathand,butIwilldeliveryoufromthesame 75Beyenotafraidneitherdoubt;forGodisyourguide, 76Andtheguideofthemwhokeepmycommandments andprecepts,saiththeLordGod:letnotyoursinsweigh youdown,andletnotyouriniquitiesliftupthemselves.

77Woebeuntothemthatareboundwiththeirsins,and coveredwiththeiriniquitieslikeasafieldiscoveredover withbushes,andthepaththereofcoveredwiththorns,that nomanmaytravelthrough!

78Itisleftundressed,andiscastintothefiretobe consumedtherewith.
