Welcome to the Spring 2024 issue of the I Am Unbreakable™ Magazine. This is a one-of-a-kind publication crafted by rockstar contributors who are some of the most influential leaders, founders and entrepreneurs who wrote a playbook for today's women in business. They demonstrate resilience and exemplary leadership while remaining true to their vision and themselves. I am honoured to share this issue with you.

I

believe that being unbreakable is synonymous with being limitless. I believe that being a woman is an asset. I believe that being the first female coach in the NFL was a platform to step into my purpose and power so that I could pour into the next generation of girls.

So that every little girl growing up understands not only are they unbreakable—they are undefined, limitless, and powerful beyond their wildest dreams. I’m fortunate to make history more than once in my life. First, as the first woman to play running back in a men’s professional football league, during my time with the Texas Revolution. Secondly, as the first female coach in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals.

Etching your name in history is a beautiful feeling. But nothing compares to the sound of shattering glass ceilings in a maledominated industry and paving the way for barrier-breaking for little girls across the world.

However, with great responsibility

also comes great struggle. My journey was far from easy. It never made sense to me that if Football was the epitome of America’s game—why was it only that way for men?

“Why” has driven and pushed me forward, even in my hardest moments.

The following strategies have helped me develop a tough and scrappy mentality, even in one of the toughest, male-dominated industries in the world. Whatever you are facing or going through, apply the following concepts and watch your energy shift.

I accepted the challenge and I encourage you to accept whatever challenge is being presented to you in this moment.

Whatever you are facing, know that your commitment and your acceptance of the challenge are enough to propel you forward. In the process, you may just break a glass ceiling or shatter a pervasive stereotype.

#1. TAKE THE CHALLENGE

You might just make history.

Football has often been referred to as the “Final Frontier” for women in sports. As we sought to create greater gender inclusivity in the professional sports realm, football felt the furthest from reach.

The sport has infused American Culture, including being played on Thanksgiving.

#2. UNTIL YOU HAVE A FIRST… YOU CAN’T HAVE A SECOND

Football was the first instance in my life where I was explicitly told Boys can do that… Girl’s Can’t.

At that moment, I remember pondering why, and from that moment forward the question

However, I have always been keyed in on the concept that until we have a first-person, there can be no subsequent people. Over time, I accepted my mission was to be the first so that I could pave the way for hundreds of women to come.

something that has never been created before, know that your contributions are paving the way for other women to achieve.

In my darkest and most frustrating moments, I held onto the hope that some little girl would have the opportunity to find and pursue her passion because of my example.

So many people were averse to the concept of change when I came onto the scene. Holding onto the old ways of being. So often, I was judged by people who didn’t know me—a champion to some a villain to others solely based on my gender. Those experiences propelled me to continue the fight and hold onto the legacy of every woman who would come after me.

#3. PAVING YOUR OWN ROADMAP In my career, I’ve often had as many questions as I’ve had answers. There was no blueprint or roadmap for the situations I’ve encountered in my career. No one to mentor me; or to answer the questions that were burning on my heart.

I never dreamed that coaching in the NFL was possible because I could never look to the sideline and say that I wanted to be like her. There was no woman before me, and being selected as the first was a daunting process.

During a time of inner turmoil, the best advice I received was to be 100% authentic from Terry Glenn when I was coaching with the Texas Revolution.

I strongly believe that part of my responsibility as the first is to ensure that I am not the last, but one in a long string that is yet to come.

At every point I struggled to make the right decision or create my roadmap, I returned to that advice and listened to my heart as I made decisions in and out of the locker room. To this day, I hold the advice near and dear to my heart whether I am creating curriculum for my camps or drafting a keynote speech. #4. GIVE BACK As I mentioned above, I believe I have been given a unique position and opportunity to share my love of sports with girls. My Program, Grrrridiron Girls, was born out of During my time with the Cardinals, so many young girls reached out to me to Thank Me for letting them know they were not alone. That it was not wrong to love Football. That it was okay to be themselves. Those messages started a stirring in my heart for something much bigger.

Over time, I started to realize how important for girls to see me and see my love for football demonstrated.

Girls are socialized differently than boys—even something as simple as going outside and throwing a football in the yard is more common for boys than for girls.

Before the launch of my camps, I noticed an issue within co-ed camps.

When a brave girl, or possibly two, would attend a fundamentals camp, they were fundamentally behind through no fault of their own. The concept of “catching like a girl” or “throwing like a girl” is completely inaccurate. You have either been taught to catch, or you have not, but so often, for these girls, no one had shown them the basics and fundamentals in the same way boys were awarded.

So, I decided to create a place and space for girls.

That is why my camp has a strong emphasis on confidence.

Through my camps, I want to give girls not only a strong and thorough understanding of fundamentals but also a thorough understanding of the attitude and mentality that led me to where I am today.

To this day, I could not be prouder of the girls who have come through the program. Not only for their athletic prowess but their mentality to prove ground and move the needle in the national conversation on women in sports.

Changing a culture doesn’t happen overnight, although I would like it to. Changing culture by cultivating intentional spaces where girls can explore their passions. Changing culture happens when we have open and honest conversations about the progress of women in sports, particularly football. Changing culture does not happen with one person.

It is an intentional series of steps in the right direction. So, my question to you is: What step will you take in the right direction today to change the culture in your world?

y first start-up came from humble beginnings at my dining room table.

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect my brand to exceed $100 million in Revenues in just 36 months and smash so many Canadian long standing records. I just wanted to make enough to pay my mortgage and enjoy my first foray into entrepreneurship after a long career in marketing in secure multinational companies.

At 51, as a single mother, I saw a need for a good-fat grab-and-go bar for fitness enthusiasts such as myself. An eleven-time Ironman competitor and yoga practitioner, I spent years adhering to a lowfat diet only for my health to hit a wall in my mid-40s. After reading Nina Teicholz’s best seller, Big Fat Surprise, I immediately shifted to a high-fat, low-carb diet, and started to feel better within a few months. While I loved the benefits of my new lifestyle, I found it challenging to find convenient, good-fat snacks.

Seeing a gap in the marketplace and a huge opportunity to help others through food, I borrowed money from my daughter’s university fund and within 12 months developed and launched Love Good Fats, a company that produces low-sugar foods loaded with good fats.

Starting in 2017, I led the launch and expansion of Love Good Fats to exceed $100million in Gross Revenues in a little over 3 years with sales in the largest retailers across Canada and the US. Love Good Fats quickly became one of the fastest-growing bar brands in North America. As a 25-year veteran of the CPG industry, I have worked at brand building companies such as Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Kraft, Heinz and Weight Watchers. A

s someone who has navigated the oftenchallenging waters of the corporate, private company and not for profit work, I am frequently reminded of the beauty and importance of relationships. From boardrooms, to meeting rooms, to kitchen tables, forging genuine and meaningful connections has been the cornerstone of my success and happiness. As I look at the leadership and entrepreneur landscape, there are many women shattering glass ceilings, achieving remarkable things and changing old ways of thinking while prioritizing the power of connection.

Why are relationships so important? Simple, we are wired for connection. As humans, we thrive on collaboration, communication, and mutual support. In a world that can often feel isolating and competitive, connections and their perspectives become even more essential.

CREATE MEANINGFUL CONNECTION Thriving relationships create meaningful connection. It’s way more than a transaction. Maya Angelou said it well “they may forget what you said - but they will never forget how you made them feel."

When I think of meaningful connection I think of my friend Pierre, who recently passed away.

We met at “Directors’ College” to pursue governance knowledge.

He was in my simulation group and study group. He was a brilliant man with a wicked sense of humour, making everyone at ease and comfortable. We both were nervous about the exam and helped each other to gain the needed confidence to pass.

We became good friends. Not too long after that, there was an opening on our board of directors at the company I led. I convinced IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

my board that we needed some added expertise and suggested Pierre, as he was a brilliant tax accountant. After interviewing and speaking to the membership, Pierre was voted onto the board.

We went from friends to coach/ boss/mentor/friend to CEO/friend.

I appreciated his caring, kindness, and overall approach to people.

It was unwavering. I left that role about five years ago. We have stayed friends over the ten year and communicated frequently, sharing our lives, the paths we were on and the things we loved or drove us crazy.

You never know how a person you meet may connect with you and add meaning. Stay open. See how they make you feel and how you make them feel. You never know.

VIRTUES OF VULNERABILITY For me, building strong relationships starts with vulnerability. It is about letting go of perfection and embracing our true and less than perfect

self. Sharing our strengths, weaknesses, and experiences with others fosters trust and understanding which creates a foundation for deeper connections.

If you have challenges or don’t know something, ask for help.

Accept your limitations and seek assistance from someone with the strengths you need. Vulnerability is especially important for women.

In a society that often associates female leadership with coldness or rigidity, showing our human side of leadership can be disarming, powerful and long lasting. It allows us to connect with others on a deeper level and build relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.

When I was a CEO of an energy co-operative, I had my parents pass away. One parent passed away within my first year and the other part way through. In both cases, I needed the support of my board and my team of exceptional people to help me navigate this uncharted set of emotions and new experiences. I was fortunate WOMEN WHO ARE ROCKSTARS

For women, relationships are especially important. They can provide us with the support, mentorship, and guidance we need to navigate the challenges and opportunities faced. They can also amplify our voices and make a positive impact in the world.

to have trusted and empowered relationships. The support and empathy were given, no questions asked. Also, I was fortunate to have the caring and support of family, friends, members (owners of the co-operative), associates and community. This was a huge lesson learned in terms of letting go and allowing people in to support me at a time of grief and challenge. Many find it tough to accept caring from others and to embrace caring for others in the professional sphere. It is a necessity and fosters deeper relationships.

CARING CREATES CONNECTION As a someone who works on strategy and change/ transformation I have learned that true change comes with buy-in.

Plans can also be derailed without each person’s buy-in. The power of connection helps drive success and growth. Connection is not about building a large network of contacts, it is about cultivating genuine connections based on mutual respect, trust, and care.

That said, there are transactions where you give and receive based upon a need. Typically, a relationship isn’t created with a transaction.

I enjoy building strong and caring relationships. It is important for us and for the workplace. It is essential for creating a healthy environment where we each person plays a meaningful part. It also enables a more just and equitable society. When we connect with others on a deeper level, we break down barriers, build trust, and foster collaboration. And that, in turn, leads to a more positive and productive world for all.

How can you start building stronger, more caring relationships?

Be genuine and authentic.

People can spot a fake a mile away. Be yourself and let your true self shine.

Listen. Take the time to hear and understand.

•

Be supportive and help when you can. We all need a helping hand sometimes and giving before receiving fosters relationship building.

•

Be respectful even when you have differing opinions.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and have their perspective heard.

Patience is key. Building relationships takes time and effort. Don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t have the time, energy, or desire to have a relationship with you. If it is meant to be, it will happen, if not, why waste precious time on something that will not happen?

MAGIC OF MENTORSHIP Connection is not just about sharing our vulnerabilities. It is also about seeking guidance and support. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have incredible mentors who have challenged me, encouraged me, and helped me navigate the complexities of professional and personal life. These mentors have been instrumental in my growth and success, and I am forever grateful for their impact. I’ve been privileged to have mentors and sponsors throughout all stages of my life. These people took a chance on me, directed me towards goals I never considered, course corrected me and told me the truth despite its consequences or outcomes. Both men and women have played a pivotal role in my mentoring. My parents, family, friends, community, associates and people I have a connection with have been mentors for a reason, a season or longer.

And its not one sided … I have the privilege of mentoring others. Some situationally with knowledge sharing or connection

great at collaboration. We are natural relationship builders and understand the power of working together to achieve common goals. When we leverage this strength, we can create truly remarkable things. Corporate Canada has come a long way since I earned my first corporate board seat over twenty years ago. With women now holding nearly 30% of the board seats at TSX-listed companies, 36% of board seats among the S&P/TSX Composite Index companies, and 38% of board seats among the S&P/ TSX 60 companies, it’s no longer rare to see a board with two or more woman members, or even a woman serving as chair (8% of the chairs of TSX-listed companies are now women).

As someone who has been the only woman in the boardroom more than once in my career, it’s been rewarding to see more of my female peers taking on leadership roles at the country’s top companies.

Still, for women, leading in the boardroom comes with unique challenges. Once they take their seats around the boardroom table, women leaders often face implicit biases, gender stereotypes, and unequal opportunities to contribute and lead.

After two decades as a corporate director, I have learned a thing or two about how to take the lead and make my voice heard in the boardroom. The work doesn’t end when you get appointed to the board; it’s only just begun.

EI is everything One key lesson that I’ve learned?

Quite often, it’s not what you know but how you say it. I’ve discovered the importance of enhancing your sense of emotional intelligence (EI) at the boardroom table, including paying attention to everything from verbal communication to body language, tone of voice, and social skills.

I group these power skills into four categories: courage, confidence, collaboration, and communication. I recommend building up your EI skills in each category to lead in the boardroom.

Others respond well to someone who acts courageously, speaks confidently, collaborates well with everyone in the room, and is a clear and intentional communicator.

those willing to take a backseat approach are usually more passive and distanced. Leaning in means being assertive and moving toward a leadership role rather than a follower’s role.

Fortunately, women tend to excel in these areas. I encourage aspiring women corporate directors to lean into their natural EI skills, leveraging them to stand out.

Many women find it challenging to lean in. How can we change this? I recommend taking on a leadership role on a particular topic, issue, or governance process in which you have specialized expertise. Don’t hesitate to raise your hand for opportunities, especially key roles such as chairing a standing committee or an ad hoc special committee.

How to step into your power Once you understand the skills you need to succeed on a board, you can step into your power.

Power is how you influence change at the board level. It’s your ability to lead, influence decisions, and get things done. In my experience, there are three ways for a woman (or anyone) to step into their power:

Learning up In my experience, continuous learning is the fastest way to enhance and amplify your power in the boardroom. While straightforward, professional development requires building new skills or areas of expertise, pursuing knowledge, practicing in the real world, and repeatedly seeking feedback.

I apply this learning model to ensure I continuously elevate my board effectiveness. For example, when I began serving on corporate boards in the cannabis industry, I soaked up as much knowledge as possible by attending events and conferences, subscribing to industry newsletters, joining industry roundtables, and requesting feedback from my colleagues.

Right now, it’s particularly critical to be pursuing new information and skills in the realm of ESG. When board members ask me how to improve their ESG knowledge, I often recommend Competent Boards, which offers comprehensive peer-to-peer ESG competency education programs for boards and business leaders on sustainable business management, AI and technology, cybersecurity, geopolitics, human capital, and a range of other useful topics.

Think of sponsorship as the next step beyond mentorship. Sponsors don’t simply advise women on their board journeys; they use their network to make introductions.

Most of my board opportunities have come from my allies and sponsors—many of them men, incidentally—who made introductions that were instrumental in securing a seat in the boardroom. When I joined my last public company board, the opportunity came from a sponsor who put my name forward without knowing much about the opening. Of course, I still had to do my due diligence and come prepared for the board interview. However, my sponsor took a risk by speaking up for me.

I feel immense gratitude for all my mentors, allies, and sponsors; you have guided, elevated, and empowered me on my board journey.

Some additional advice Now that we’ve covered the strategy, allow me to share a few additional thoughts about leading in the boardroom.

Reciprocate: Always remember that networking and making connections is about reciprocity.

Give before you get, give graciously, and receive generously.

Modelling the behaviours and values you wish to see in the boardroom sets the tone at the top and can inspire others to follow suit.

To be successful as a woman leader in the boardroom requires confidence, resilience, a strategic mindset, and a commitment to fostering inclusive, diverse, and collaborative leadership. By leveraging your unique strengths, advocating for gender equality, and continuously developing your board leadership skills, you can significantly impact the boardroom and inspire the next generation of women corporate directors.

s I reflect on my journey, I find the common denominator is the power of relationships. Both the relationship with myself and the relationships I have built with others. From my earliest days of business, building connections have been my guiding light.

Recently, I embarked on a new adventure and way to connect: being a guest on my first podcast.

2. EMBRACE HUMILITY Embrace vulnerability and humility. Don't be afraid to show your vulnerabilities or admit when you don't have all the answers to a particular business trouble. A strong community and strong business relationships will step in to help you figure it all out, without judgement. Being vulnerable fosters empathy and allows other people to connect with you on a truly deep level.

3. PRIORITIZE UNDERSTANDING Prioritizing understanding is crucial in relationship building. We all have lives. Put yourself in others' shoes, seek to understand their perspectives, and empathize with their experiences. By prioritizing understanding and empathy, you lay the groundwork for long-lasting relationships that stand the test of time and yield collaborations for years to come.

As I look towards the future, I anticipate more opportunities for women to cultivate strong relationships with women across the globe.

Ever since I was a little girl, I was determined to be successful. At the age of 12, I started delivering newspapers and I have not stopped working since. By 30, I was teaching financial advisors about products that would grow and protect their client’s wealth, but my real passion was helping them better communicate with women. The industry encourages technical jargon, complicated concepts and solely emphasizes performance.

But for women, there is much more.

I have always been comfortable talking about money and investments, but I quickly realized how many women felt overwhelmed when talking about their finances. These were bright, talented, and determined women but when it came to investments, they felt paralyzed. They simply lacked the internal self-belief and confidence in their abilities to manage money.

There are several studies that link financial confidence vs financial literacy as the key driver of longterm financial success. Why? Because we can have all the knowledge, but if we do not have confidence in our abilities to put that knowledge into action, then the knowledge itself, will not help us achieve success.

Studies suggest that greater financial literacy might improve intentions toward positive financial behavior, but it does not indicate whether or not people follow through with their plans and take action (Borden 2008). That it is our self-assured knowledge that represents one of the most significant factors in determining positive financial behaviors (Courchane 2005).

So why does that matter?

There is a sizable difference between people's self-assessed knowledge their actual knowledge. Women are less likely to consider themselves financially knowledgeable, 31% of women vs 43% of men and women are less likely to state that they know enough about investments to choose the right one that is suitable for their circumstances, 48% of women vs 68% of men Gender differences in the financial knowledge of Canadians. So the gender confidence gap when it comes to money is real.

Building a woman’s confidence involves empowering her with knowledge, skills, and resources to take control of her financial life.

I have spent almost 20 years in the financial services industry, advocating to help close the gender gaps that exist for women when it comes to money. I believe that as women, our focus needs to shift towards building our financial confidence vs solely focusing on financial literacy.

Before I explain why, let’s break these two terms down.

Financial literacy refers to the knowledge and understanding of various financial concepts and skills necessary to make informed and responsible financial decisions.

Financial confidence is the level of self-assurance and belief an individual has in their ability to manage their finances effectively.

When someone is financially confident, they feel secure and in control of their financial situation, which can lead to better decisionmaking and reduce stress related to money matters.

Here are some actionable steps to take to build your financial confidence.

1.

Be Confident in Your Abilities; recognize your worth and believe in your ability to manage your finances. In my almost 20-year career in the financial service industry, in my opinion, the narrative has always centered around telling women what they are lacking, instead of building them up. Embracing a positive mindset and trusting in your ability to make sound financial decisions is one of the most important steps you can take.

Set Clear Financial Goals: Define short-term and long-term financial goals. Whether it's saving for a short-term purchase or planning for 30 years in the future, without a clear goal to work towards, you have no way of measuring your success. Remember, the definition of success is individual. I find too much financial advice in the media is generic, making it hard for people to conceptualize and apply sound principles to their unique financial situation. Don’t compare your financial journey to anyone else’s. We are starting at different places and that is ok. Meet yourself where you are right now but allow yourself to dream big of where you want to go.

3.

Support Networks: Connect with a community of women who are interested in improving their financial knowledge. Join a financial empowerment group or attend workshops and seminars to share experiences and gain insights.

4. Seek Professional Advice: There is a lot of negativities in the press surrounding financial advisors and fees. Like any industry, it is important to ensure the advice you are paying for is credible and aligned with your goals and desires. There can be benefits to a “do it yourself” approach but all the clients I work with, although highly capable, rely on my experience and expertise to take the pressure of managing building, protecting, and passing wealth off their plate. They value the advice I provide, and it extends far beyond investment advice. As a woman, I do not mind paying for services I deem valuable. I pay to get my hair done (and pay a premium to someone I can trust), I pay to get my car serviced, I pay to get my taxes done, and I pay to have someone guide me on my health and fitness journey. There is a “quick fix” do-it-yourself solution for all those services, but I value the piece of mind I get from working with a professional.

Financial advice is no different. There are many studies that support the concept that people who work with a financial advisor retire wealthier, despite what the commercials might tell you.

arly in my career, when I was struggling to navigate the work environment and get promoted, I was advised to find a mentor. I wasn’t quite sure what a mentor was or where to start, but was assured mentorship would make a difference. Fast forward to today, I have several mentors that have changed my life in many ways. I am grateful for their leadership and guidance.

What is Mentorship and Why Does It Matter?

Mentorship is a relationship between a mentor and a mentee, where the mentor provides guidance, advice, feedback, and support to the mentee, who is seeking to learn, grow, or achieve a specific goal. Mentorship can be formal or informal, long-term or short-term, and can occur in various settings, such as work, education, or personal life.

However, not all mentorship relationships are equally effective.

Effective mentorship is more than just finding someone who is willing to help you. It requires a clear understanding of your goals, a strategic approach to finding and reaching out to potential mentors, and a commitment to

building and maintaining the relationship over time.

Mentorship matters because it can help you develop new skills, gain different perspectives, identify strategies to overcome challenges, access opportunities, and advance your career. According to a survey by Korn Ferry, 63% of professionals who had a mentor said it improved their performance and 76% said it boosted their confidence. Finding the right mentor is key to your success.

SIX STEPS TO FINDING THE BEST MENTOR

Identify Your Mentorship Needs Before you start looking for a mentor, you need to identify what kind of mentorship you need and why. A common mistake is to ask for mentorship in a vague or broad way, such as, "I need mentorship in finance". This makes it hard for you to find the right mentor and for the potential mentor to understand how they can best help you.

Instead, be more specific and focused on your mentorship needs. For example, you can ask yourself these questions: - What aspect of finance do I need mentorship in? Is it how to save money, where to invest, or how to use financial software?

- What is my goal or desired outcome from the mentorship?

Is it to improve my financial literacy, to make better financial decisions, or to advance my career in finance?

- What are the skills, knowledge, or experience that I need to achieve my goal? Is it budgeting, investing, or accounting?

By answering these questions, you can narrow down your mentorship needs and create a more specific and compelling request for mentorship. So instead of saying, "I need mentorship in finance", you can say, "I need mentorship in how to use QuickBooks to manage my small business finances". This will help you attract mentors who have the relevant expertise and interest in helping you.

2. Find a Potential Mentor Once you have your goals in mind, you can start researching your options for potential mentors.

Begin by identifying the best people in your field that you admire and are willing to learn from. Leverage your network by looking to co-workers, managers, or alumni that you respect.

Ask friends or colleagues for recommendations. You can also use online platforms, such as LinkedIn, X, Instagram, or industry forums, to find thought leaders, influencers, or experts in your niche area. Don’t overthink finding a mentor. Sometimes you can meet your mentor by accident.

Be open to how you meet your mentor. Once you have generated a list of possible mentors, narrow them down by ranking them based on your requirements, the learning opportunities you desire, and the experience that they possess.

3. Connect with Value The next step is to reach out to your potential mentors and initiate a conversation. You want to stand out and make a lasting impression. Don't just send a generic message asking them to be your mentor. Instead, take the time to review their profile.

Depending on your needs, you can also look for different types of mentors, such as career, peer, life, or reverse mentors. Also, don’t limit your options to only mentors that look like you. A mentor that is a different gender, ability or ethnicity can offer a variety of perspectives.

In conclusion, having mentors can be a valuable asset for your personal and professional growth. “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself”, according to Oprah Winfrey and inspires you to achieve your potential.

They can also provide you with feedback, advice, support, and opportunities that can enhance your skills, knowledge, and boost your confidence. Choose your mentors wisely. Remember that while you may be learning from your mentor, your mentor is also learning from you. Therefore, seek to find and nurture mentorship relationships that are mutually beneficial, while also enriching your and experiences.

veryone has a super skill and my super skill is connecting.

Being someone who is extroverted and loves to talk to people, it makes it easy to make that initial connection.

I have no problem walking into a room and spotting individuals who I want to know better and walking directly up to them to say “hey, let's chat.” I was at a conference once when a very dear friend of mine, (now) who I didn't know at the time, walked right up to me while I was standing in a group of people and said to me “you don't know me and I don't know you but I can feel your vibe from the other side of the room and I need to know you.” I am so glad in that moment she was so genuine and made that connection because we have worked together several times since and it has been fantastic for both of us.

Now, taking that next step is important! This is where most people stop; this is where people, women especially, think “well I can't just reach out,” WHY NOT? Why can't we just reach out and say hello to someone; why can't we just walk up to someone in a room full of people and introduce ourselves? You know what? We can and we should!

Make that first impression count!

In that moment, that individual is probably going to decide what they think about your vibe,

they're probably going to decide how much maintenance your relationship is going to be worth to them. You need to make sure that you present well, you show up, you are ‘first date ready!’ What does this look like? Let's break it down.

When you are going to an event with the intention of networking for professional purposes you need to make sure you're showing up; make sure you're dressed for success. The way you present yourself on the outside is not the only important piece; it is important that you are emotionally ready to show up as well. As a side note, I never think

We can't just have a quick chat and then try and leverage that relationship one or two years later with nothing in between.

I believe in the law of attraction; what you put out in the world is what you will get back and so if you put out into the world positivity, curiosity and understanding you will get that back. Meaning, you will find people who have the vibe you are looking for. I am all about the vibe. I love seeing an individual in a room full of people and thinking to myself ‘Yep, that's who I'm gonna know before the end of today; that's who I wanna know IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

there's a difference between professional and personal when it comes to networking. I'm going to show up every time to everything because you never know where an opportunity might lie; to me, business is personal.

Now look at me; I don't look like a banker but that doesn't mean that I don't show up as my best! I show up as my best professional self not just that but I also show up uniquely. I don't want to look like everyone else in the room; I want people to remember me. I do always show up with a big smile and an open mind. I do always try and make everyone in the room feel equally valuable. Always be prepared to have that short initial conversation, that first impression conversation with a short pitch about yourself. Some people call this their elevator pitch. I call it my highlight reel; this is me! I'm going to show you in one minute why you are going to want to maintain this relationship with me and in doing so you're going to get excited about knowing more.

If you do a good job presenting your highlight reel individuals will want to know more about you and they will want to take the time to work with you in the future and maintain this relationship.

Be genuine in these moments.

In every initial conversation it is my goal to allow the individual space; don't spend the whole time talking about yourself. I am a firm believer that lions don't have to tell everyone they are a lion. Let your reputation speak for itself.

Make sure you're listeningACTIVELY listening. Find common ground, this will often help inspire ways you can work together successfully in the future. Always be on the hunt for those nuggets.

Those little tidbits of information that you can tuck away in your back pocket so that in the future when someone says “hey, do you know someone who does this…” you've got that little nugget in your back pocket so you can share and make that connection.

Once you've won that relationship and you're moving on to maintaining that relationship make sure, again, you're doing it with genuine interest and care.

Ensure that you are taking the time to reach out to that individual not just when you are asking for something but when you have something to give. Make sure that there are times where you are connecting with them just to tell them that you brought their name into a conversation and suggested that whatever they do is valuable to that person. Bring them business, bring them connections that could be valuable to them.

Don't always be reaching out your hand to your network; you need to foster it. You need to give back to it for it to grow successfully.

My network is filled with amazing women entrepreneurs and what I do to foster that network is continuing to support them with everything that I have. You can support small businesses without purchasing from them.

Now, don't get me wrong, most of my favorite purchases are from my small business connections.

However, there are times where I am simply supporting them by saying their names in rooms where they're not. By sharing their content, by sharing why I enjoy their products, by talking about their successes every chance I get, this allows me to support them as an entrepreneur and it allows me to foster the relationship I have with them.

I do believe that relationships are made to come at certain times, certain seasons of your life and of your career and I do believe that I have been blessed with many relationships that I didn't even know I needed at the time but soon was shown what I needed them for or what they needed me for. Be aware that when you're building those relationships that sometimes it's not you needing the relationship; sometimes, you're the one that's needed. Be willing to give to those relationships, be

Not everyone has great taste, you won’t be everyone’s favourite person. Sometimes the relationships you are trying the hardest to build are the ones that are the most difficult or least likely to thrive organically. My advice is remaining true to yourself and your values. Keep shining and be open, however, know that some relationships are not meant for you or not meant for this season of your life.

A professional network is important; a personal network is important. Building a network, a community, and having connections is valuable not only to your success but it paints your life with color and increases your joy in the experience.

ince childhood, I embarked on an unwavering entrepreneurial journey. At the age of 5, I chose to sell my drawings on the street to purchase a gift for my mother. By 8, I was a professional dancer, making my debut on a TV show.

I was that child who loved the company of friends but also needed them to eventually leave because I had grand plans. I hosted a "pretend" arts and crafts TV show in the basement every weekend morning.

I choreographed my brother in the pool, played businesswoman on school days off, relishing visits to my dad's office to engage in fake phone calls and make countless photocopies, just to appear busy.

My entrepreneurial spirit remained steadfast, but looking ahead to today, I can assert that it has, indeed, diverted my focus from connecting with my authentic self.

We're taught to persist, never give up, face both good and rough times, and simply put in the work. "It's not about the destination; it's about the journey." Hearing this used to make me cringe because, for me, it was and always has been about the destination. It was about ticking that box only to gaze at the next one. I was always in the future, never in the present, as the present became the past.

The relentless masculine energy I embraced to adopt this mindset meant losing touch with the magic within, as a woman. Ironically, despite founding a company at 23 empowering women performers globally, I found myself completely disconnected from my feminine power.

Fifteen years after launching my first company, the impact hit me the hardest. Despite attempting to balance life, I never felt comfortable with the concept. I preferred my extremist "give it all and you will receive" persona. However, I found myself trapped in an extreme identity crisis, primarily linked to my work.

I was defined and judged by it, attracting attention from men because of it. But all of "IT" was not who I was; it was what I did. The raw "me" had taken a backseat at such a young age that I lost complete connection with her.

Experiencing an identity crisis and questioning our life's path after dedicating our entire existence, compromising to a level that disconnects us from ourselves, was something I never anticipated.

Regardless of what it was or wasn't, I faced it head-on and realized I wasn't even calling myself by my real name anymore. "Gen" had been my business name for so long that "Genevieve" felt unfamiliar.

I had become a manufactured product, fully embodying my masculine energy, and it was making IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

me miserable. I also operated like a robot, avoiding closeness with others, fearing that tapping into my feminine energy might jeopardize everything I had built.

The decision to change came when life shook me up, leaving me no other choice. Instead of evading the issue, I took a deep breath and immersed myself in it. It took years of various therapies, mostly rooted in ancestral practices and musical therapy, to facilitate this transformative journey that I'm still navigating.

The ultimate mission of this transformation was to reconnect with my authentic self. True intuition and bringing beauty into the world are impossible when we are miserable. To shine as intended in this life, we must be connected to our core and true self.

The transition was undoubtedly challenging, and it remains a lifelong process. However, the crucial realization I made is that work will bring pure joy and happiness to the world when it originates from a place of self-respect. Life continues to challenge me to realign and stay true to my authentic self with integrity, guided by the heart rather than the brain.

This shift has changed my life in ways I cannot fully explain. Now, the goals I set for myself are firmly placed in a timeline, and instead of solely fixating on them, I can finally derive empowering lessons from and enjoy the journey.

y name, Nkechinyere, holds the essence of my identity within it-- a name that embodies my Nigerian heritage and the strength and resilience passed down from generation to generation. Today, I unapologetically stand proud of my name and proud of what my name stands for – God’s Gift Yet, it was not always this way.

Growing up, my name wasn't always easy for others to pronounce. For me, building relationships had an additional layer of stress. In my soccer days, I was affectionately dubbed "Nke" (pronounced “Ink”) by teammates seeking a shortcut and looking for an easy way to connect with me, without necessarily having to pronounce my name.

My journey into competitive bodybuilding was fueled by a passion for excellence instilled by my Nigerian roots. I've always been passionate about excellence in all areas of my life. Yet, like most things, behind the glitz and glamour of the stage, the mental and physical toll of striving for perfection was incredibly difficult for me. The pressure to conform to unrealistic standards led me down a path of insecurity and crippling self-doubt. Although I was excelling on stage, behind the scenes, I was grappling with self-image and truly loving myself regardless of what I looked like.

In my culture, each tattoo tells a story: of triumphs, of joy, of sorrow, of victory. From the African coat of arms to the lotus flower symbolizing resilience, every piece of ink is a reminder of the strength I carry within me. Tattoos serve as permanent self-affirmations of my identity and the power I hold within myself.

Like my name, they are deeply symbolic.

Today, my focus has shifted from personal success to the collective uplifting and empowerment of women, who like I was, are struggling to claim their identity and find their internal reservior of power and purpose. Through initiatives like "Empowered in My Skin," I strive to inspire others to think in ways that are empowering, embrace their authenticity and reclaim their power. I have a deep desire to lift other women up and create a domino effect of empowerment – empowered people, empower people.

As I help women step into their purpose and power, I have found the following techniques and strategies to be incredibly helpful.

Give them a try and self-affirm yourself to success and power.

1. BE CONVINCED ABOUT WHO YOU ARE: Being convinced about who you are is a MUST. Because when you are not convinced about who you are, you are compromised and will allow the world to ascribe something to your human. As you get to know who you are, and the truth of you unfolds, make sure to unapologetically celebrate your unique identity.

For me, celebrating my cultural heritage and personal values, and becoming truly me, was the first step in me stepping into my power. Embrace who you are, from the smallest to the largest details, of your background and experiences. In your pursuit to embrace authenticity, practice self-awareness and introspection to understand your genuine aspirations and what you truly value in life and community.

By knowing yourself deeply, you will confidently navigate challenges, making decisions that align with your true values. and make decisions aligned with your values.

I experienced firsthand the indescribable highs of success and the lows of defeat. From gruelling workouts to strict diets and the pursuit of aesthetic perfection, my mental health began to suffer.

Knowing that I couldn't continue down the path I was currently on, I leaned into the power of self-affirmation to speak life into myself. Though I was struggling, I refused to let myself be broken.

The practice of self-affirmation became my lifeline through all of the challenges and adversity.

Create a roadmap to achieving your dreams. I always encourage my sphere of infuence to break down their goals into manageable steps and take consistent action, even small action, towards their attainment. Be open to learning and growth, especially about yourself, as you seek opportunities to expand both your skills and your own personal conviction.

Stepping into your power requires continuous self-improvement and a willingness to embrace new challenges, even if they challenge long-held beliefs or require vulnerability on your part.

Today, I continue to navigate the ebbs and flows of life. I am ‘life-ing’ . and each day, I am reminded of the strength that lies within me. ike many individuals starting at university, I was not sure what major to choose or what I was going to do with a degree.

However, I knew that I enjoyed high school mathematics, so I started my undergraduate degree at Miami University of Ohio as an accounting major. That changed quickly, in fact, within a few weeks, after a conversation with the president of the university, who I had interviewed as an assignment in my role as part of the university newspaper’s journalist team. After the interview he asked about me and, in particular, my SAT scores. When I told him what I had scored in math, he not only suggested that I switch my major to Mathematics, but also he personally changed all my classes.

I loved mathematics but I was not sure what I was going to do with a degree in mathematics. At that time the most obvious choice was to teach. While I was completing my undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Spanish and also because I was considering becoming a teacher, I participated in the mandatory classroom observation session.

Immediately after that session, I decided that teaching high school was not for me, but as I was interested in teaching at college or university, one of my mentors suggested that I apply for graduate school. That led me to pursue a Master of Science degree in Mathematics at the University of Tennessee at a time when most students in the program were male. My career in a series of male dominated fields was launched with a job at the National Security Agency (NSA) as one of the very few female cryptologic mathematicians working for the United States government.

My experience at the NSA provided the foundation for a career in information security, as Vice President of Electronic Commerce at MasterCard and C-suite positions with start-ups Cylink, Certicom and TrustPoint Innovation. My work at these start-ups led to successful exits in Silicon Valley and the TorontoWaterloo Tech corridor with two IPOs and two acquisitions.

While serving in executive roles at some of the largest companies in North America, I usually found myself the lone female at the table. For me and my female colleagues, these male-dominated fields often felt like old boys' clubs. After leaving the corporate sector to pursue my entrepreneurial ambitions, I continued to have very few womenidentified peers.

As a professional in industries ranging from cryptography to telecommunications to electronic commerce, I understand all too well the incredible barriers that women can face in educational systems and careers. I have made it a priority to challenge the gender inequality faced by women and girls IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

in educational systems and in their careers and to support the advancement of women in STEM in order to make a material difference in the roles women play and the influence they have on the digital economy.

I am proud to have supported a range of strategic initiatives to propel girls and women in science. During my decade-long tenure as a member and later chair of the Emmy Noether Council (ENC) at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, the focus was and continues to be to increase the number of women in physics.

Perimeter and the ENC championed many initiatives and I had the opportunity to share my personal story with young women including those attending Perimeter’s annual Inspiring Future Women in Science forum for 200 high school-aged future young scientists.

As a firm believer that mentorship and sponsorship are fundamental to inspiring and supporting women in their careers, I cofounded the Waterloo Region chapter of Women in Communication and Technology (WCT-WR).

WCT-WR launched the Mentoring Circles, an annual nine-month program designed to enhance selfRESILIENT TRIAL BLAZERS & CHANGE MAKERS

confidence, communication and leadership skills.

The mentorship program is now in its fifth cycle and I’m pleased to report that since the inception in 2019, over 500 participants at all career stages have participated in the program.

In 2018, I founded Profound Impact Corporation, where we have built Research Impact, an AIpowered tool that helps academic and industry researchers find the perfect funding match. In 2023, Profound Impact announced its inaugural Board of Directors, which is all female. In August, the company announced the successful close of a $3.125 million 10/17/23, 3:56 PM pre-seed funding round of nearly all female investors, including many first-time angel investors.

My career has spanned four decades and, for many of those years, it was a path that was less accessible to women. I believe that women will experience greater success by working together and am committed to creating collaborative communities of women who bolster each other and leave the ladder down for others to climb. It is an honour to work with those communities to inspire the next generation of innovators and to empower women through increased resources and opportunities.

Entering a traditionally male-dominated field and pitching venture capitalists for funding is daunting.

Under current fundraising models, women-led ventures receive a small fraction of the available venture capitalist funds. While fundraising for Profound Impact, I found myself facing challenges despite my successful track record of two acquisitions and two IPOs. To address the funding gap faced by women founders, I joined forces with Deborah Rosati, founder and CEO of Women Get On Board and Profound Impact board chair, and Lara Zink, VP of Client Service and Development at Delaney Capital Management, to create Women Funding Women (WFW). This collective, which launched on February 7 in Toronto, will challenge the status quo in the venture capital world and with first time female angel investors by breaking barriers and building bridges for a more inclusive investment community.

Working with an Advisory Council of women leaders and outstanding corporate partners, WFW is activating women investors to support women-led ventures by fostering collaboration and building bridges across borders to connect funders and investors in the US to the Canadian market in order to enable Canadian womenled ventures to access resources and funding beyond the local ecosystem.

I

Midway through my second year of full time work, I announced to my friends and family that I was becoming a recluse.

It was neither planned on my part nor surprising on theirs. A spur of the moment idea brought about by exhaustion from being around too many people at social and work events that I’d been asked, guilted and summoned to attend, in that escalating order.

Once the words left my lips, the idea took a life of its own. Twenty four hours later, I was at my desk, daydreaming about all the things me and my solitude would do.

Other than going to the office, I stayed home; read through my entire book shelf, ate dry cereal when the milk ran out, wrote short stories in longhand, turned off the phone and took long naps.

Three and a half weeks in, I ran out of things to do. A failed recluse, I returned to the world with as little fanfare as I could and under a duress no one understood much less accepted as real. I vowed to limit my interactions with people and I networked as little as possible.

A WORLD NOT DESIGNED FOR ME As a child no one told me I was an introvert. I was anti-social. I was no fun. I was never happy. Those were the labels given to me as I went about my school days navigating a world I knew was designed for other people. When the bell rang at three thirty, I ran home as fast as I could. In the sanctuary of my bedroom with the door safely shut, I knew with all my might I was none of those bad things.

Surrounded by my books, my imagination and my someday plans, I didn’t need any friends. I filled my container from edge to edge, I was so vibrant and big!

energy levels, much less the confidence to decline invitations to networking events. Bound by the rules of engagement, I just kept going and going until I had to take drastic measures because I’d depleted my entire life force.

The business world wasn’t built for people like me, although in recent years, technology, social media and remote work have greatly contributed to our wellbeing by allowing us to show up– alone–when needed. The business world is built on one thing: human connections. Today I’m in a role where I build and nurture relationships and I do this by meeting as many people as I can and by putting myself out there for the world to see. Yes, I’m doing the very things that once sent me into hiding for weeks.

THE IMMEASURABLE BENEFITS OF CHANGING MY WAYS I share this deeply personal story because I regularly meet people who tell me they dislike networking and certainly would not engage online beyond the bare minimum expected to keep one’s job. If you are one of those people, listen up, I’ve been where you are and I’ve also experienced the immeasurable long term benefits of doing it anyway, doing it tired and doing it vulnerably. I can’t pinpoint when

exactly, but maybe four years into my career I realized that my preference for reclusiveness was limiting my advancement and so I returned to networking with a fierce commitment to build connections. As I hope you’ve gleaned from my story it didn’t come naturally. In fact my entire biological makeup was rooting against me. But I showed up every time I said I would. I met people in large groups, in small ones and I met people individually. I went in without expectations other than a genuine curiosity and a desire to exchange ideas and share information that might be useful.

Some connections paid off and others did not, and I got better at deciphering where I should spend my time and with whom. More recently I’ve taken that approach online, where I share tips and resources with business owners and sometimes I share more personal tidbits.

Looking back, I know that diligently building my network and nurturing connections early on was the best investment I ever made and it continues to reward me both professionally and personally in ways I could have never imagined as a once shy introvert. All my jobs, other than the first one, have come from connections. Business opportunities arise from within my network, and friends are made with a “Hey” DM or a “Hi,

Ask Unique Questions: The questions you pose will set you apart. Steering clear of the mundane "so tell me more about you" in favour of inquiries based on your research not only makes you more memorable but can unearth information far richer than the standard chit chat. This approach demonstrates genuine interest and can pave the way for deeper, more meaningful exchanges.

THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT OF SHOWING UP

Be Intriguing: If you’ve ever been trapped in a conversation about the weather, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Don't let that happen to your listeners or followers. Have some interesting opinions or things to share about yourself in person and online. If you're struggling to come up with five things that make you stand

out, it might be a sign to embark on new adventures. Trust me, networking was much harder for a boring introvert than an interesting one.

Follow Up: Encounters at networking events or online can be fleeting, but the connections don't have to be. If you find common ground with someone, take the initiative to extend the conversation. Proposing a video chat or a coffee meeting to explore synergies can be the first step towards a lasting professional relationship.

Keep at It: Growing a personal and professional network is a long game that requires persistence.

You must continually seek out new opportunities to network, nurture the connections you have, and remain engaged in the process. In other words: show up!

The thing about having a large diversified network of connections is that it produces results even when I’m not in the room. My connections mention me. My connections make introductions.

My connections know I will do the same for them. That’s how the business world works: human connections.

If you’re not investing in your network, I urge you to start now and I’d like to share what’s worked for me, both in person and online: Be Visible: This is the most important one. Until it gets beyond a certain size, a network or following will not grow by itself.

You need to show up. You need to put yourself out there.

Platforms like LinkedIn are filled with insights into the professional lives and interests of people you might want in your circle. y first taste of business came at age 10.

Running my own neighbourhood events sparked my entrepreneurial spirit. This experience was the first internal signal of a passion for the leadership role.

My choice to follow this signal, regardless of what I heard from peers, guidance counsellors and general messaging about what my true place in the world should be, brought significant obstacles.

At 10, I got my first taste of being an entrepreneur, and I kid you not, I truly knew this was my journey.

At 14, I was told I couldn’t do things because of my #gender.

At 17, My guidance counsellor told me, “You are not smart. You will never amount to anything. Find a man, marry rich, go have a few kids, and you’ll be fine.”

Those hard, hurtful words fuel me to this day because for me: REJECTION TRULY IS REDIRECTION. At 19, I opened my first #business and sold it for five years later for a profit.

At 24, I started a Public Relations Agency and serviced clients such as the Rolling Stones, U2, Samuel Jackson, Collin Farrell and the WWE, to name a few.

At 30-something, I became the first female founder in North IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

America to own a fully licensed Private Investigations and Security Agency.

Today, at 40 or 50 something (lol), I am the founder of I Am Unbreakable™ Global Media, on a mission is to elevate and empower humans to unlock their full superpower potential while inspiring them to be the rockstar they were born to be.

ello everyone, I’m Mara Dorne, and today I want to share with you a perspective that has fundamentally shaped both my personal and professional life: the immeasurable power of relationships. My journey, from the early days of striving to make ends meet to becoming a self-made millionaire and a Senior Regional Sales Leader overseeing hundreds of agents, has taught me that at the heart of success lies the ability to forge and nurture relationships.

THE POWER OF BELIEF One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is the transformative power of belief in the context of relationships. When we believe in someone, often more than they believe in themselves, we unlock a door to their potential that they might never have found the key to on their own. This belief, this unwavering support and faith, can propel people to achieve beyond their wildest dreams.

I’ve witnessed this time and again—individuals who, when given support, guidance, and a little nudge of belief, achieve incredible feats. It’s a testament to the idea that success is not just a measure of one’s individual capabilities but also a reflection of the strength and support of the community around them.

My story is not one of overnight success or of solitary triumph.

It is a tale of community, of connections, and of the collective strength found in the bonds we build with others. I’ve come to understand that relationships are the scaffolding upon which we construct our dreams, the safety net that catches us when we fall, and the ladder that helps us climb to heights we never thought possible.

CREATING CONNECTIONS I started my career in insurance, an industry I never intentionally chose, but one that chose me. This journey began at a time when I was searching for my path, fresh from the realization that my initial dream of becoming a lawyer would not materialize. It was then that I discovered the true essence of my purpose: to positively impact every single person I meet.

In my role, I have had the privilege of leading and mentoring over 1,500 agents, many of whom have gone on to achieve their own remarkable successes. The cornerstone of my leadership and the foundation of my success have been the genuine relationships I've built with each of these individuals. I’ve always believed that to lead effectively, one must lead with heart, showing genuine care and investment in the growth and well-being of others.

e’ve all heard the many phrases extolling the benefits of positive thinking.

‘It’s the thought that counts.’

‘What you focus on expands.’

‘Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.’

We’ve been inundated with selfhelp titles that espouse the power of thinking positive thoughts, from classic titles like Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking and Dale Carnegie’s How To Stop Worrying and Start Living, to The Secret’s positive manifestation instruments, including its vision boards, and numerous more recent titles, all of which expound on the virtues of positive thinking and reinforce the message that it’s our thoughts that counts.

A relatively new term — toxic positivity — has recently entered the modern-day lexicon, and discussions about the downside of positive thinking abound and often confound us. The discourse around toxic positivity explores the folly of glossing over negative events, feelings, worries, and concerns with platitudes that fail to address the depths of pain, fears, and anxieties that impact the lives of people around the world. In short, calling out those who dismiss and negate real feelings and concerns with advice to “look on the bright side,” or chastising people for feeling anxious, isolated, or lost during COVID, exposes the negating effect of insensitivity to others who are in pain.

We need to show kindness and empathy when people we love, and listen to and validate their feelings. We are here to help others carry their burden in times of trouble and self-doubt. And it is here where the quality of our thoughts truly matter.

How our thoughts play out Our thoughts matter, because positive or negative, our thoughts shape our lives. We are designed

to hold just one thought at a time, and when the thought that we hold onto fills us with fear or adds fuel to the flames of selfdoubt rather than courage, we’re in for a rough ride. Self-doubt leads us into low moods, feeling lesser than, and a loss of faith and confidence in our ability to handle what life brings. We then make choices that play out in the world based on our fears rather than what serves our authentic selves.

Drop a pebble in still water, and watch how it impacts the surface of the water as it moves out in expanding concentric circles. Our thoughts, moods, and actions play out this same way.

The past is in the past, and the future is just our imagination. We can pay attention to our thoughts, examine the veracity of our negative thoughts, and move out into the world— and the future — in a positive state of mind, at our authentically highest and best.

Our thoughts have a ripple effect because they lead to our moods and behaviors. And our moods and behaviors, in turn, affect those around us. When we can take control of our thoughts, we also begin to shift and change our moods, behaviors, and the people in our lives.

How to become a more positive thinker CHALLENGE, REWRITE, AND REFRAME!

We have a choice When it comes to our thoughts, we have a choice. We can choose to challenge our negative thoughts and self-limiting beliefs and reframe, rewrite, and replace our negative beliefs with more positive, supportive, and adaptive ones.

For example, say you had a negative online shopping experience, and as a result, you now avoid online shopping. Is that negative thought you hold about online shopping a result of an isolated incident, or a long list of negative transactions?

If you suffer from anticipatory anxiety as an important social event approaches, is your anxiety based on a series of bad experiences that verify your trepidation, or are you imagining and forecasting negative encounters and unpleasant outcomes based on an isolated event?

If you decline to apply for a careerenhancing position out of fear of rejection? Does your self-doubt prevent you from seeking a better job, a new career opportunity, or a healthier relationship? When our negative thoughts lead to choices that diminish us, we have a choice.

We can choose to think about the way we think about our lives and ourselves! We can choose to challenge the truth about our negative thoughts and replace those negative thoughts with positive ones. We can go for that promotion, and take a leap of faith that leads us into a more rewarding career or relationship.

Ourselves, our world, our future To a very large extent, we are what we think, and who we think we are. If we think we can handle whatever comes our way, we move through the world with a sense of confidence, rather than dread and trepidation. When we realize the power of how we think about

e live in an increasingly interconnected world. With the rise of social media, we have the opportunity to connect and build relationships. both business and personal, with people from across the globe. As a teacher at a global business school that travels from country to country, I've had the opportunity to witness business in various international settings and every corner of the globe. I studied the ability to build and sustain non-transactional business relationships. From Malaysia to Grand Cayman, I noticed the nuances of this art, creating nontransactional relationships, and began putting the concepts into practice within my own company and relationships.

Below are some tips I've used to build relationships on a foundation of mutual trust and respect versus simply transaction.

UNDERSTANDING CULTURAL DYNAMICS: Understand the cultural disparities and differences in the approach of your culture versus your global counterparts. It's easy to assume that everyone builds relationships and trust the same way, but having traversed diverse business landscapes, there are profound differences. There is a significant difference in approach between Americans, who often display a readiness to make that first, big sale, and Asian countries, who prioritize longevity more. Many countries have a markedly different approach that emphasizes thinking long-term and valuing the cultivation of a relationship over immediate gains or big sales right out of the gate.

Understand that in some cultures, profits are not the sole focus. It's about building a foundation for sustained collaboration. When you meet a new colleague or connection, ask yourself how you

can create a strong foundation for your relationship moving forward.

CULTURAL ADAPTABILITY: To navigate this cultural diversity successfully, learn a business style that is adaptable across borders.

This does not mean to lean into a style that is inauthentic for you or to dull your magic, but to find a way to build relationships authentically while being culturally adaptable. For example, Americans are known for their energetic approach. In a culture that values quiet intimacy-perhaps you build space and time for one-on-one meetings in a quiet, calm space that helps everyone feel comfortable.

When I speak internationally, I consciously adjust my energy

to align with the local, cultural norms. It's about being genuine and avoiding the perception of artificiality, although initially, it may seem the opposite. When you are adaptable while building relationships, you foster crucial trust and understanding: key ingredients in the recipe for longterm, non-transactional business relationships.

I've always been an expressive person, talking with my hands and raising my voice when I'm passionate. This energetic communication style served me well in my career in the U.S. I could motivate people with my enthusiasm.

But when I began doing business and teaching in Europe and Australia, my excitable approach

cultural communicator over time and found my stride with cultural adaptability.

THINKING BEYOND THE IMMEDIATE GAIN: Consciously shift your mindset from short-term gains to longterm collaboration. It's about looking at what can be done together over time, not just a onetime transaction, and finding truly creative ways to work together.

This perspective requires patience and an understanding that building sustainable relationships may take time but pays off in the form of enduring partnerships that stand the test of time.

Sometimes, leaving something on the table today leads to a larger feast in the future.

CULTIVATING QUIET INTIMACY In the pursuit of non-transactional relationships, the global business community can benefit from adopting a mindset that values quiet intimacy. Much of the world, particularly the East, values and highly prioritizes quiet intimacy.

Conversations felt strained and it dawned on me that my communication style came across as overtly hyped to them.

At first, I took this personally, wondering why they could not meet me where I was. However, over time, I realized that I needed to adapt to be effective. the muted energy and lower volume I perceived as disinterest from them was simply a cultural difference.

So, I made an effort to scale back my animation, speaking calmly and keeping my gestures minimal.

Another effort I made was pausing more to allow other people to interject and be heard; this started to yield an authentic connection.

My less frenzied energy allowed us to have a thoughtful dialogue as equals.

Adjusting my communication style opened doors. Removing perceived hype created space for meaningful relationships built on trust rather than bravado.

People saw me as nuanced rather than one-dimensional and in tampering with my excitement, I learned the value of restraint and the importance of cultural adaptability.

Now, when I teach internationally, I meet each culture on its own terms and modulate my energy to create an environment conducive to collaboration. Finding common ground yields better deals and my expressiveness is still there: just focused through a more universal lens. I've become a better cross-

irst off, let’s get the most important item out of the way. If you want to know how to build great relationships you must first know that the single most important relationship you’ll have is the relationship you have with yourself. Until you truly know who you are, you will rarely have true and lasting relationships. So do the work!

"Find your purpose and relationships will find you". The power of authenticity and living in alignment with one's true passions and values is key. When you are clear about your purpose and pursue it with dedication and enthusiasm, you will naturally attract like-minded individuals and meaningful connections.

I believe that recognizing the power of the relationship with yourself is what forms the foundation upon which all other relationships are built.

We all have the opportunity to create relationships every day and sometimes we don't even realize it. Be mindful of how you

engage with others. Just because you’re not being intentional about creating a relationship doesn’t mean that you aren’t creating one.

I personally am a believer in quality over quantity. True relationships take time and effort.

Be authentic. This is why it is so important to first know who you are and what your purpose is.

You will exude confidence and enthusiasm when you let your authenticity shine through.

A huge component to remember is that your energy is huge. It walks in before you do. It speaks volumes about us before we even open our mouths. How you carry IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

Finally, just when you think you are not good at creating relationships or you don't know how to, remember that we all have something in common.

o talk about relationships, and the power within them, I thought I would give a couple of examples of how relationship building has worked for me with the hopes that it might help you! I thought I would share three different areas that might inspire you to think about the kind of relationshipbuilding you want and what it can look like for you. First my career as an air traffic controller, then my passion as CEO of Elevate Aviation and finally, my passion as a new documentary director, writer, and producer.

Let’s start with air traffic control.

I am an air traffic controller and I work in a specialty called Edmonton Terminal. I have been working with the organization for 24 years now. I still can’t believe it’s been 24 years so far. The time flies by so quickly!

When I think of the power of relationships in this area it’s very professional and so important.

I work sitting at a radar screen plugged into a console by a cord on my headset. There is no leaving that area until my time is up. Often, I am sitting beside a co-worker just a few feet away.

What is interesting to me about this type of relationship that we have built with each other as coworkers is that is heavily reliant on trust. Everyone may not be best friends, but when we are sitting just a few feet away from each other and we are talking to airplanes, we have 100 percent trust in each other which allows us to do our job at a very high level.

The type of relationship building here is based on creating an environment. In this case, it’s building an environment where people can work at a very high level and trust each other that the lives in their hands will stay safe. It is a very professional relationship that is critical to the success of air traffic control.

Now, let me introduce you to a different type of relationship building. To do that I have to first introduce you to Elevate Aviation.

Elevate Aviation is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide a platform for women and underrepresented groups to thrive and succeed through careers in aviation. Our non-profit organization was founded in 2015 in Edmonton, AB, and our vision is to be a primary provider of aviation career support for women, working alongside industry professionals to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. National programs include mentorship, bursaries, consulting, tours, speaking engagements and the Elevate Aviation Learning Centre (EALC).

What does that mean? It means we have a passion to help people grow and succeed.

The organization has grown from what started as a calendar to the national non-profit organization it is today with programs across the country and a learning center with free courses to help people succeed in aviation.

It’s incredible to see where this organization has grown. It is because of several reasons. It’s because our innovation to create programs that have never existed before, it’s because of the strong belief and passion for what we are doing, it’s because of our unique style of having fun while being impactful, and that energy is contagious.

But all of these have something in common. People. People are involved. People are thinking up and running the programs, people are bringing their passion and skills to the table, and people are the heart and soul of this organization.

What this means to me is that people = relationships. The kind of relationships you have with people, and what they have with each other, are what will build or tear down your organization… and even with fabulous people, it’s not always easy! Communication can be very hard. But working at getting it right, and trying your best, can lead you and your team to places you never could have ever imagined.

Spending time on relationships is paramount. Fostering them and trying your best to work with people to understand you care.

Being vulnerable and open and trying to make sure everyone feels they belong and their opinions truly matter is so important and not always easy. Having hard conversations where needed so the people who work hard and do an amazing job respect their workplace and want to stay can be extremely difficult.

Doing all this can help you grow to heights you never thought possible and it’s important that the relationship with yourself is nurtured as well. For some, growing in new areas can create the imposter syndrome. Fear of failure for some is paralyzing.

Negative thoughts allowed to run rapidly with no self-control over them can be the downfall before anything has even started. Learning to master that relationship inside my own head has been one of my biggest life challenges as it affects all my other relationships. Many years ago, I named that negative voice inside my head Pillsbury Dough B.tch. It’s a longer story for another day. But the short version naming that negative voice allows me to start having a relationship with it so I could recognize when it was talking and determine if what I was saying to myself was real, or if it was just that negative voice trying to hold me back from growing.

relationship building in a less formal way. Recently my journey led me to making a 90-minute feature-length documentary that is currently being broadcast in Canada. In this film, I was able to follow six different storylines and go into some incredible places. One of the most common questions I get from people who have watched the movie is, how did you get access to go into the locations? It all comes down to relationship building. We were able to go into a helicopter and rappel up and down with the Canadian military, we added unprecedented access to air traffic control students training to get their licence, etc. My advice here for you is, as you go along in life, talk to people, connect, and build a relationship, even if it’s just bringing a smile to someone else.

You never know where you may be able to go back to that person to help you along in your career – or to make a movie!

t wasn't the setting one would expect for a pivotal business deal. This opportunity was unlike any I had encountered in my small staffing and training business before, thrusting me into the automotive sector where established competitors loomed large – competitors that commanded attention in prestigious boardrooms.

Meanwhile, I found myself clutching a single piece of paper amidst the hustle and bustle of hotel guests. No flashy presentations. No detailed financial breakdowns. Just a list of questions. From my shaking fingers, the paper fell onto the floor, mere moments before my prospective client walked over to meet me.

But those five minutes were all I needed. I engaged in a genuine conversation, asking questions and listening to the answers with intent. My compatriot leaned back in his chair and uttered words that would stay with me throughout my career: “Not one other staffing service asked me the questions you did.”

That simple act of connection secured us the contract – and many more would follow. It was the birth of a heart connection.

But what, exactly, is a heart connection?

It’s more than just a fleeting interaction or a transactional exchange. A heart connection runs deep, built on authenticity, trust, and a common purpose.

It's about feeling comfortable and understood while offering the same sense of comfort and understanding in return.

I built my staffing and training business on this breed of connection. Though we had very different personalities, the client I earned in that hotel lobby would later return and consult with me.

He spoke about me in rooms with automotive manufacturers that would eventually become clients, too. I consider him a friend – and a connection for life.

The same is true at WXN (Women’s Executive Network), where I’ve led as Owner and

Come prepared. Do your research and formulate questions before showing up to a meeting. When you come prepared you also send a message of respect and demonstrate that you value their time and expertise.

Match their energy. If you’re meeting with a nononsense individual, like the client in my hotel lobby meeting, take that into account. Respect their time and mirror their approach in order to reach your common goal.

Be resilient. Not every connection will blossom.

Some people simply won’t click with you, and that’s okay. Every encounter is an opportunity for growth regardless.

Finally, it’s about nurturing them.

on, I joined my local Chamber of Commerce and professional human resources industry groups. When I launched my business in new communities, I got involved at every opportunity, even sponsoring sporting events.

Step out of your comfort zone. Heart connections form when you take risks, step out of your comfort zone, and put yourself out into the world. You never know who you’ll meet and what opportunities you’ll discover when you meet them.

Then, it’s about forming them.

Find common ground. A shared interest or similar goal can launch a meaningful conversation that forms the base of a strong connection, trust, and future potential.

Follow up and follow through. Deliver on your promises and maintain transparency if obstacles arise. When faced with professional challenges, communicate your current status, proposed solutions, and anticipated timeline for resolution.

Reach out. Thoughtful personal touches go a long way. Let people know you’re thinking of them. Bring a round of coffee to your next meeting. Remember important events and dates like work anniversaries and commemorate them.

Show your gratitude. Even a simple thank-you can show appreciation. It boils down to being present and sharing gratitude.

Set boundaries. As your heart connections blossom, be mindful of boundaries between your personal and professional life. Heart connections are ultimately built on trust – and respecting boundaries is essential to maintaining that trust over time.

A

s a natural peopleperson, building lasting relationships has been something I’ve done since an early age, but the one relationship that has taken me years to build is the one with my body.

Growing up in Brazil, a country that places great value on physical beauty, then moving to Canada in my early 20s and having my standards of beauty change overnight, my relationship with my body was painful at times.

Add to the mix over 2 decades of health struggles, including a spinal surgery in 2012, weight struggles that followed and over 15 years of migraines and chronic pain, I speak from experience when I say that becoming my body’s best friend did not happen overnight.

I am a believer that life happens through us, and not to us, and after taking my health for granted, even when unwell, as I prioritized my career, when 70-hour weeks were the norm, my body eventually hit a tipping point, which landed me in a medical leave, followed by an intense 4-month healing journey.

Stepping away from a career I worked so hard to build was both terrifying and freeing, and for the first time in my life, I stopped to ask myself what I actually wanted. My achievements started to become less about external markers of success and more about the person I was becoming in the process.

My purpose started to shift and as a result of my own healing journey, the topic of women’s health took center stage in my studies and it is now the sole focus of my private practice.

When looking back at the time that I was unable to get through the day without a migraine to now, what has changed is how I lead myself and I now allow my IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

body to be part of the decision making process.

I went from managing my time, to managing my energy. I plan with pencil and allow myself to change my mind. I get quiet for a second and ask for my intuition to lead the way, and if something does not feel right, my body will surely tell me! It is subtle, but if you make time to hear, it will speak to you!

In my book, Release - A Woman’s Guide To Releasing Weight In Midlife Through Becoming Your Body’s Best Friend, I share the roadmap I used to rebuild my relationship with my body and in the process, release weight and regain my health.

Of all the lessons my body has taught me, the one I treasure the

most, has to do with personal power. Now I can say that I am grateful for all my struggles, because they made me the person I am today.

My body, through all its ups and downs, has instilled in me the traits of someone who can overcome adversity and come out stronger on the side, of someone that is able to self-source her power, when the outside world is challenging and of someone that can heal, despite all the discouragement I received from the authority voices I listened to in the past.

I know my body is doing all it can to support me, to return me to authenticity and to keep me safe, and it is this deep trust that has allowed me to make room to get the help and support I needed, so real change could take place.

I now have an unwavering belief in the inner intelligence of my body, and when times get tough, I stay strong in my personal power, ask my body for what it needs and follow its lead.

ost people think about relationships in terms of romantic partners. For entrepreneurs, some of the most important relationships will be our business connections. If we’re too afraid to reach out to someone, creating powerful business relationships will be difficult.

When I first started Atomic Mommy, I knew I was going to have to do the thing I was never good at. Petrified of rejection, my first year was spent hiding in a proverbial hole with my laptop.

In my little corner, I toiled away writing, blogging, and building a small business. I launched my infant media company with zero business connections. It should’ve been a more successful launch, hindsight being 20/20, networking was the thing missing.

and it’s in those charged seconds that the real connection can happen. If you’re too afraid to go past the introductions, you’ll never get anywhere. Instead, you’ll end up like I did in my first year of business, with tons of contacts, but no real memorable connection.

My first year of business was the hardest and scariest because I didn’t have a mentor to get me through tough spots. What I did have was my thirst for knowledge, my tenacity for research, and my ability to adapt when cornered.

Considering I was the one who cornered myself, I had to battle the villain within, whose main goal was self-sabotage.

When the responses did come in, I didn’t know what to do with them. So, like a newbie networker, I gave their messages a ‘like’ and occasionally, wrote back a few words. No surprise there when zero growth happened.

In my second year of business, I hunkered down for the long haul of networking. I made it a point to secure real connections.

In terms of business relationships, I couldn’t seem to get my head wrapped around the idea that I needed connections to grow. And then I met someone who networked as easily as swans navigate their migration.

He shared with me one of the most beneficial yet vague tips I’ve ever learned, “People are just as nervous as you are, so go in there, introduce yourself, and watch how the ice melts between you and them. The rest will flow.”

He was right of course, just not the part where the rest will flow, and that’s really what you need. You need the flow of conversation to get to know one another, yet so many of us stop short once we’ve introduced ourselves. We never really make it beyond “Hey, I’m so and so, I do this and that, what do you do?” Sure, we’ll respond, but then the air feels thin in the moments after the small talk,

every DM I sent. Of course, people didn’t resonate with my message.

I don’t blame them. I sent the same message to everyone, so nothing was truly personal to each individual. By the end of that second year, I felt rejected, even though I did it to myself. But I didn’t quit.

In my third year of business, I decided to leave my house and go to physical events. I chose to observe networking in action. I wanted to know everything, and like a student, I watched, listened, and learned. I walked away with key points that year, like: •

Be specific with your aim when choosing who to connect with, otherwise, you can run into building a huge contact list with zero benefits.

Practice your connection “pitch” before you attempt to connect. You want to be able to pivot from introduction to learning about each other’s business to gaining some personal perspective on your new connection.

Have a call to action that you want to market to your new connections. Make sure it’s worth true value for your new connection. Don’t just offer it to someone who doesn’t need it. You’ll know who will benefit from your offer by getting to know them.

Have something that you’re willing to give in return for your new connection’s support. For example, I offer new connections that I meet the ability to advertise their businesses on my podcast. It’s how I show them I care about their businesses.

Finally, leave room to plan future chats and meet-ups with one another. These can be beneficial in many ways beyond friendship, such as sharing growth tool knowledge, software

experiences, and so much more.

You see, owning a business is fantastic but you’re not the only one out there. There are millions just like you and I, running our own businesses in our corners of the world. To build real relationships in that realm, you need to get to know both them and their business, offer them something of value, and in return, be bold enough to ask for value in return. Businesses grow because we help each other. After all, we’re willing to show up for one another, not just because of our customers, which leads me to my next learned experience.

One of the biggest questions I get is, “Why bother with business relationships when we have consumers bringing in revenue?”

That’s a good question and the answer is simple. Consumers trust us because they believe in our mission, our product, and our values. But when the economy tanks, consumers don’t care about our business, they care about their bottom line, and rightfully so. In those economic downturns, it’s our business relationships that

will help us find new consumers, new ways to reign in expenses, new ideas to move forward, and introductions to others that can help our businesses stay afloat. Without these powerful relationships, running a business successfully can be hampered down, even to the point of closing.

So whenever someone asks me what my biggest and most helpful tip to new entrepreneurs is, the response I give is always the same… Build a strong support system, at home AND in the business world.

The relationships I have built over the last four years, however painstaking it was, have helped me create a global presence.

All the rejection I feared was a hindering mindset. I still struggle from time to time, letting my shyness get in the way, yet I never allow myself the opportunity to quit. I tell myself it’s OKAY to be nervous, so long as I keep going.

Now, thanks to rebuilding and refining skills I thought I didn’t need, I’ve cultivated amazing business relationships, and you can, too!

I

knew one day when it was time for me to have children and be a mom, I’d wish to be blessed with a daughter. My dream came true. Twenty-one years ago, I gave birth to my daughter, Isabella Rose. Did I know the extent of the happiness I’d feel when I became a mother? I had no clue. All I knew was that I was a young, new mom who had fallen in love with her child the moment I discovered I was pregnant.

I did everything I could while I was expecting to ensure her health and wellbeing. An instinct that has never left me. To this day, my commitment to my children (I was later blessed with a son named Luca) has been to love, care for and protect them.

However, my role in their life has expanded beyond that to where I wear many different hats. Not only are we mothers, but we are also doctors, teachers, confidants, chefs, housekeepers, coaches, councillors, cheerleaders, police officers, spiritual guides, and many more. If we take our responsibility as mothers conscientiously, we’re always on duty, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, never missing a beat.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have a mom who was an incredible role model for what a selfless mother is like. She was a stay-at-home mother of four daughters who tirelessly took care of us and our home while my father worked most of the time. My mom was the person I went to for support, advice and

understanding. There was a good balance between guidance and the freedom to choose.

This helped to instill a sense of independence, self-confidence, and self-reliance that I would carry with me through my life. I knew I would want to provide this same balance to my own children someday.

Stepping into the role of being a mother was a miracle that happened to me. Statistically, you only have a 20% chance of becoming pregnant every month when everything is going right for you, such as age, health, fertility, and timing. So, I’d say being pregnant and carrying your baby to term is a miracle. The day she arrived remains one of the happiest moments of my life, with the addition of my son’s birth and my wedding day. I will never forget the day I set eyes on her after impatiently waiting for her arrival (she was five days overdue).

My husband announced we had a girl, which was a surprise because we thought we were having a boy based on the superstitious games you play while pregnant. In that instant, I knew that I had my best friend for life.

From the moment she entered this world, Isabella has been attached to me. I couldn’t put her down or leave her in the care of others without her crying for me. We were inseparable, and we have been ever since. Although this posed a challenge at times, it allowed us to bond in a way I couldn’t conceive of until I became a mother myself. As a daughter and an educator, I thought I understood how much a parent loves their child. I did not fully grasp this love until I became a parent myself. The love you feel for your child is only comprehensible until you have your own child to love (in whatever way you are a parent). The unconditional love I have for my children and what they have for me is a miracle I experience and give thanks for daily. It is an authentic love

without expectations; its potency is beyond measure and in an infinite amount.

As my daughter finds her way through the world, I am here to help her become the person she is meant to be, not who I want her to be. As parents, I believe we are here to support our children in becoming who they were meant to be in this lifetime and to be by them in their process of discovering who that is. Are they going to make mistakes?

Absolutely! Did we? Yes! But those mistakes taught us the lessons we needed to know to become the people we are today. If I can share the things I have learned along the way with her, I do, although she doesn’t always want to listen to it; and that’s okay. We all must find our way through the world.

We are all here to have our own experiences to grow, learn and expand.

When you know that each of us is here on Earth at this time to have our own soul experience and that we are here to help one another on our personal journey, then our role as co-creators becomes apparent. My daughter

is one of my greatest teachers, just as I am hers. I learn from her just as she learns from me. I am a much better person because of what she has allowed me to see in myself. Because of her cherished presence in my life, I am a more generous, grateful, playful, kind, resilient, happier, and loving person, to name but a few. I have come to know that she was given to me to share my life with just as I was given to her. Most times, we are two peas in a pod, but we have those moments of disagreement and debate. It is in those times that I reflect on what that moment is trying to teach me; in many cases, it is patience, the ability to see someone else’s point of view, updating myself to presentday trends, understanding, altruism, empathy, compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, and what unconditional love really means.

Being a mother has allowed me the opportunity to make the most significant difference I could ever make in another person’s life; a blessing I realize every time I see love and happiness when I look

into their eyes and feel when we’re in a warm and tender embrace.

I have discovered that being a mother is my greatest happiness and accomplishment. I have had the privilege of participating in many wonderful experiences, but nothing matters more to me than being the best person I can be for my children and myself.

I

've been an entrepreneur for most of my life. I've organized events for voluptuous women and their admirers, owned two plus-size clothing stores, and even had my own clothing line. At one point, I jetted off to Jamaica with an Ice Cappuccino Machine under one arm and a dream in my heart. In 2009, I found myself on the Dragon’s Den and was offered a deal for $250K, but I turned it down and continued on my journey.

When I connected with my now business partner, Dan Shaikh, I knew I’d found my calling. We started Speaker Slam in 2016 with a shared desire to create something truly remarkable. We wanted to make an impact in this world, to provide a platform for people to be seen and heard, and perhaps most importantly, to give individuals a chance to use their voices to heal—something we both desperately needed.

We met at a local Toastmasters group and quickly became fast friends. We both shared a love for laughter, conversation, and being the center of attention.

Initially, we competed for that role until we realized we were more powerful together. It was the strength of our relationship that became the cornerstone of our success. Together, we went on to create North America's largest inspirational speaking competition and subsequently a Speaker Development Agency.

When you're an entrepreneur at heart, you're driven to create! You want to be responsible for putting something out into the world that is undeniably fabulous! I believe we achieved that with Speaker Slam. As I stand here today, reflecting on our journey, there are a few lessons I’d like to share.

Firstly, the notion of waiting

for our big break. Like most new businesses, we learned as we went along. We were certainly inexperienced and made our fair share of mistakes.

We were finding our way, often hoping that someone would come along and offer us our big break. We met numerous successful entrepreneurs whom we respected and admired.

There were several promising conversations about potential collaborations, each time sparking excitement that this might be it— our BIG BREAK. Yet, time and time again, we faced disappointment.

As painful as those moments were, they fueled a determination within us to persevere and succeed. We became self-reliant and independent. Today, I can confidently say that we are guided by self-trust and a fierce conviction that everything we need to succeed is already within us.

Secondly, the ability to adapt.

The pandemic was a shock to the system for the entire world, and for us, it was terrifying. We ran live events and training programs, so adapting and innovating was absolutely necessary. We weren’t sure if people would follow us online, but we forged ahead and created our virtual speaking competition and training programs despite the resistance. In the end, I can now see the silver lining. Taking our services online allowed us to expand our reach beyond our hometown of Toronto and attract a much broader audience. Today, we have participants competing and training with us from Europe, Africa, and the US. It's been truly awe-inspiring to witness.

Lastly, the power of strengthening your inner circle versus amassing hundreds of thousands of

followers. Initially, we dedicated much of our time to promoting our events and growing our online presence. At one point, our brand garnered significant attention from some of the world’s largest online media companies—Goalcast, Innerlight Media, Power of Positivity, and A+ Media—brands with tens of millions of followers began sharing our content. In fact, our speakers' videos amassed over 500 million views in just 1-2 years. However, despite the vast reach and viewership, it didn’t translate into a substantial impact on our business or the lives of our speakers. It felt fleeting and superficial.

At a certain point, we made a deliberate shift in our business focus, prioritizing the cultivation of deeper relationships. We connected with incredibly successful professionals and created genuine connections.

organizers, TEDx coaches, and book publishers became integral parts of our community—they served as judges, ran workshops, and shared our brand with their networks. We made it a priority

to align with individuals who shared our values—leaders who were heart-centered, missiondriven, and focused on making a meaningful impact. What became evident was that, as a byproduct of nurturing these relationships, our community grew organically with like-minded individuals.

Our journey with Speaker Slam has been a real adventure. As I look back I can recognize the growth, resilience, and the power of meaningful connections. While the road hasn't always been easy, every challenge has served as an opportunity to evolve and be better. As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship, one thing remains clear: the strength of our relationships and the depth of our connections will always be our greatest assets. Together, we are truly unstoppable.

he journey of self-discovery and personal growth is critical to our conscious evolution. And the most important relationship we will ever have is with ourselves. We often search for something or someone outside of ourselves to feel complete. The principle of relationship with self is deeply entrenched in psychology, mindfulness, and personal development circles and underscores the foundational truths about human well-being, growth, and our interactions with the world.

Despite its significance, many of us shy away from cultivating a deeper connection with ourselves.

It's paradoxical how we can project immense self-confidence and achieve outward success yet grapple with a genuine sense of self-worth. Without engaging in this more profound work, we are in a perpetual chase for external validation, a void no amount of success can fill.

My own life has been a testament to this truth.

Reflecting on my past and the daily work I put into fostering greater self-love and self-worth, I've come to recognize the importance of this internal alliance. It's a journey filled with challenges and immense gratitude as I continue learning the value of acknowledging my wholeness and worth.

When you can look into the mirror and truly love who you see – with all your imperfections – you achieve a sense of completeness that paves the way for deeper connections. For me, meditation has been a cornerstone practice for nurturing this mindfulness.

e are in a society primarily driven by goals, results and tasks. We often hear that it is not about the finish line, but the journey we took to get there.

There are individuals who believe they can get there alone – then eventually often realize that we are always stronger together.

We need to build relationships, for the concept of ‘togetherness’ to materialize into anything meaningful.

You probably don’t even realize how many interactions you have in one day with different individuals. Did you know that every single interaction you have with someone, you are building a relationship with them? Think about it.

How do you greet your cashier at the grocery store, do you smile or scoff at them? Have you ever found yourself quick to judge a co-worker, without truly knowing what they are going through personally or professionally?

A lot of things in life are outside of our control, but our actions and reactions are things that we can control. How do you ‘show up’… are you consistent….or does it vary based on the situation or day? Are you the person who walks in with a smile and seems approachable, or the complete contrary?

Naturally, we gravitate to individuals who are projecting positive energy when we first see or meet them. Body language is the first impression and form of communication we have with others before we even say a word.

Which could also influence the trajectory of a relationship or the way others are influenced to perceive you. Be aware of how you present yourself.

I have been an award-winning keynote speaker and professional coach for over a decade – and I love it! Do you know what my favorite part of it is? The PEOPLE. When I present a keynote speech, I try to make a point to say hello to everyone in the room before I go on stage. I want them to meet me, and have a chance to get to know me before they hear me speak.

It also gives me a chance to get to know them, and have a better sense of my audience, and I may

adjust my speech accordingly.

Incredible the powerful impact this small and simple gesture has at my events.

It is important in any relationship for individuals to feel seen, heard and respected. We want to feel like we matter. I found that meeting everyone before I speak, sets the tone that I am not just there for money or fame, but that the people there MATTER. My purpose is to touch lives and inspire others to dream big and find their greatness. Which makes FOR THE FELLAS

Social media has also created a platform for individuals to ‘connect’. The connections we build on social media can range from superficial to deep and meaningful, it really is up to you.

As you follow someone you may start to feel a connection, perhaps a relatable situation or topic you agree with. You can comment on their posts, send private messages, and essentially develop as strong or as simple a relationship as you choose to with that individual.

It does take some effort to maintain any form of relationship, but it is not as much of an effort as we often think. A simple text, phone call, or even a comment on someone’s post. Relationships are built on trust, and trust comes with actions and words that are shared with genuine intent.

I truly believe what Maya Angelou once said: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

recognizing and encouraging them on social media or through a quick phone call. Expressing sincere interest, followed by supporting actions, helps to build trust within any relationship.

People always come first for me, including on my teams as an entrepreneur. I take the time to get to know my team members, and recognize their contributions to show my appreciation in different ways. We all have different skills and strengths, so it is important to empower and encourage them as they flourish

I have been fortunate and I am forever grateful for all of the incredible referrals and clients I have received as a result of the relationships that I have built over time. Often they came from someone who saw me speak at an event, or follow me on social media. There have been partnerships and collaborations that I would have never even dreamed of, from large corporations such as Toyota and Axis Communications, to nonprofit organizations. They all came from the relationships I developed over time.

It is so important to treat every interaction you have with someone as if you are building a relationship with them because you never know where an opportunity may arise. Decide who you want to be with others, and how you want to ‘show up’ – then live it every day and truly find your greatness!

A Half Century Dance: Rediscovering Life's True Wealth in Relationships G A RY

recently turned 50. Like many, it prompted a lot of reflection on my life thus far. The highs and lows. The successes and failures. But most importantly, I reflected on the critical role of the relationships I built over time.

And to be honest, it was those relationships that kept me going in the darkest of times.

Over 10 years ago, I left my career to start a company focused on holistic wellness. Looking back now, despite the hard life lessons, it was what I needed at that time in my career and my life.

At that point in my life, I was blind to what I had created. Fuelled by some tricky childhood challenges - stuttering, for example - I didn't notice the influence my fearful ego had on my relationships.

While I did have fantastic relationships with my family and dear friends, I spent most of my time in transactional relationships.

Relationships based on social proof and validation. Relationships that reaffirmed my ego.

In starting my company, Zero dB, it all changed. My identity vanished overnight. I was no longer a young alcohol executive; I was bare. An uncertain forty-yearold about to embark on a 10-year lesson in humility and struggle.

Struggling not in the financial sense, per se, but the mental struggle born of the incongruence of who I was and who I truly wanted to be.

Maybe you can relate, but when you lose your identity, the rudderless relationships in your life don't survive. Perhaps not instantly, but eventually they always dissolve.

This quote by Matshona Dhliwayo, a Canadian-based philosopher, aptly sums it up, "One friend in a storm is worth more than a thousand in the sunshine."

See, starting my business was that storm for me. A storm born from the deafening echoes of my self-judgement. I was mentally, emotionally, and I guess spiritually broken down. This was when I needed the ‘real’ relationships in my life the most.

I've created what's called the Emergency Crisis Kit. It's a cardsized reminder of what to do when things fall apart. The most important part of the list is 'phone a friend'. It's the most important because in trying times what we need from our relationships the most is a trusted perspective.

Perspective from people who know and love us.

When we're surrounded by truth and love, we start to get a sense of our bearings again. We begin to trust in who we are. We start to develop a sense of true self-

worth. And this is critical because our soul runs on gratitude, and without the belief that you are somebody, there is no gratitude.

We attract what we are in life.

Since I turned 50, I haven't stopped reflecting on my life and the people I’ve attracted into it.

I think about my sister and her two kids. The kids born when I started my business. The only light in my life at the time.

I think about my wife and dog and our blessed baby on board.

How incredible a shift did I have to make in my life to manifest this rare beauty.

I think about my most powerful group of souls I call friends. Their love provided the canvas for my soul to evolve.

On my 50th birthday, I invited thirty dear friends and family to dinner. I began and ended my speech with a realization of awe.

Awe of the love I had around me.

The friends around me represented different aspects of my personality, because they were the ones who shaped it. I looked around the table and at who I now was, and I was grateful.

What I was most grateful for was the integrity of my relationships. I no longer needed to validate who I was. With these relationships, I could weather countless storms.

I've seen firsthand that relationships with integrity, built on love and trust, help mitigate the noise of doubt and fear, especially when times are tough.

I've seen that they are the bedrock when all is shaky.

Sadly, I'm not sure if the general sentiment of society values relationships. Our world is becoming increasingly more isolated and self-absorbed. We seem to be losing the most important aspect of our biology.

Connection. Connection to the

environment. Connection to ourselves. And connection with those important to us.

We are, conversely, becoming a disconnected society. The focus is ourselves. How great and virtuous we are. Justifying this individualism with Maslow’s pyramid, heralding selfactualization as the ultimate goal.

Yet, this interpretation misses a critical piece of Maslow's ultimate vision: Transcendence.

Contrary to the notion of 'it's all about me'. Transcendence is about surpassing the ego and

contributing to the broader societal good. Transcending the ego and connecting.

Relationships.

I'm at a critical time in my life.

The business is at an inflection point, and my wife and I are due in June. But for the first time, I can look forward and trust that everything will be ok. Not because it is ordained, but because I can see clearly.

I can see that I can count on those around me. I can see that I am where I'm supposed to be. And finally, I can see that I'm not alone.

any people today look at me in awe.

As the Founder and CEO of a notable public relations and digital media firm, I have it all, really.

trip back to Jasper when a light went off inside of me. I asked myself one morning on my way to work at the Lodge’s Golf Pro Shop: “Isn’t there more to life than just working a plain old job, making money for ‘the man.’”

I have a nice condo overlooking the water; decorated with guitars, books, art, and souvenirs that I have collected from many trips around the world. I even have locations to work remotely from in the Costa del Sol (Spain), Canmore (Canadian Rockies – Alberta), and The Strip (Las Vegas), to name a few.

I had that entrepreneurial spirit but just didn’t know it at the time. However, I knew I had to follow my passions in writing and creativity. Being a musician, I always appreciated the power of the media and knew it could be a field I would excel in.

I even have a talented team of writers, graphic designers, web developers, social media experts, and videographers helping scale Salt & Pepper Media Inc. to new heights. And, if you can believe it, I just completed a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences/ Journalism, and I am now in the process of raising over $1 million with private investors to write, direct and produce a timeless masterpiece in the realm of psychological horror cinema.

I returned home from out west to attend Mohawk College of Applied Arts & Technology. I was no bookworm, so it took extra effort to stay on top of assignments and presentations, but I somehow excelled. After a shaky first year with grades, my second year showed lots of promise: I was hired as the News Editor for the student newspaper, The Satellite, hosted TV & Radio talk shows, and produced a compelling radio documentary on Canadian Vietnam Veterans.

Yes, my story of success is a sure “winner” in the eyes of many.

But I always remind other aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs of one thing: “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”

The rest is history.

outside of Toronto, in a great neighbourhood with supportive and loving parents and family. I had it all as a kid, teen, and young adult: I played ice hockey, played guitar in scores of rock bands, and travelled the world as a lead trumpet player with a worldrenowned marching band and a few concert orchestras. I even had a massive group of friends and always a girl in my arms.

However, there’s more to this story as the struggle has been real.

But first a story.

I am a two-time high school dropout. Yes, I got bored of the books and the teacher's rules. In Grade 13, I packed school in and ventured off to Jasper, Alberta to work at the Jasper Park Lodge.

After I arrived home to take one more stab at completing my Grade 13, I instead jetted off to Benalmádena, Spain in the Costa del Sol to soak up the rays.

After months under the hot sun, I returned home to pull off a miracle: I completed my Grade 13 at night school while working full-time. And then I returned to Jasper to work and make money.

But I wanted more.

I overcame challenges in college but wanted a university degree to have that extra edge in life and to expand my mind and nurture new relationships.

With this, I moved to Halifax to attend Saint Mary’s University (SMU). My first year was a tough struggle with exams and bigger papers, but I kept working hard to rise above the rest. I even struggled writing huge features during my first year for the student newspaper, but I prevailed. It turned out, by my second year at SMU, I was voted by the students to be the Editor of The Journal, one of Canada’s oldest student newspapers with a weekly circulation of 20,000

both sides of the border. These were the true glory days: I was working hard and promoting athletes in the NFL, CFL, NHL, MLB, and the NBA. It was a dream come true. I was a jet setter with scores of new clients; I was on top of the world.

Then I got hit hard.

My business nearly folded due to the last economic recession.

In 2010, I returned home to Burlington from Halifax. Broke and in debt, I took a part-time job unloading trucks at Sears and worked to climb my way back out of a dark economic and emotional hole. readers. I held the Editor’s position for the remaining three years at SMU and completed my Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree.

After graduating, the University even hired me as a publicist and reporter to promote new innovations among leading researchers in a number of disciplines: arts, sciences and business. They even sent me on assignments across Canada, the USA, Europe, and West Africa. I even completed a Master of Arts (MA) Degree while holding a busy and demanding job. I learned more about myself and the power of new relationships.

But I wanted more.

Interestingly, on my 10-year anniversary of working at the university, a dentist out of nowhere approached me. He admired my talents as a reporter, writer, and publicist. He invented a mouthguard for athletes – amateur and professionals – that would take the world by storm. I then made the leap to quit my day job and became an entrepreneur, promoting the mouthguard through Salt & Pepper, and the long list of dentists offering it on IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

I was confused, and depressed, but never gave up. During this shaky period, I met all kinds of people from all walks of life who were in the same boat as me: struggling to make ends meet, struggling to pay bills, and struggling to smile. These new relationships were powerful and taught me a lesson: Everyone has a story.

Then I got busy fulfilling a dream: to grow my company and remain my own boss. By 2014, my client

list started to grow in a big way. I was finally back on top.

However, it hasn’t been all rosy and it never will be. I learned how cruel people can be. Dealing with narcissists and not getting paid became realities, but I have always forged ahead, never looking in the rearview mirror. We all build relationships; some are right, and some are not. We all learn.

My company, Salt & Pepper Media Inc., now has almost 40 clients in the start-up space, and my firm has helped nearly 300 start-ups launch on the market. The power of the right relationships and networking has given me that extra skip in my step and a bigger smile.

I have even worked with and promoted some of the greats: Olivia Newton-John, Lennox Lewis, Donny Osmond, Jose Yenque, Leeza Gibbons, and the list could go on. Myself, and my team, now work with major news agencies on a daily basis promoting our clients’ innovations. They include CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, The New York Times, The LA Times, CTV, and Global, to name just a handful. I have even had my work published in scores of big media outlets, like USA Today, The Toronto Sun, The Toronto Tribune, The New York City Herald, and I am now penning Thought Leadership columns with Entrepreneur and Rolling Stone Culture Council.

But I still want more.

I know however that things may never last. Life as an entrepreneur is full of ups and downs.

Reinvention is key, and so are building the right relationships.

The struggle will always be there, and it will always be real. But I am ready for change and take on the challenges that lie ahead.

I

grew up in Bucks County, PA, in a town called Morrisville. I pretty much stayed there most of my life until my 40s when I got married.

I did not graduate from high school but received my GED in the Military. Yes, I was a troubled and wild teen due to an abusive and alcoholic father. I could’ve turned to hard drugs, but I didn’t.

I smoked weed a bit, drank, but it never got hold of me.

I then went on to go to EMT school, drove an ambulance for seven years in Philadelphia, rose through the ranks to Director of Training, and became an Advanced First Aid Instructor.

During that time, I enlisted in the Army National Guard to become a Combat Medic. I was an expert Marksman, graduating in the top 30 out of over 500 cadets in my medical school at Fort Sam, Houston. After my stint as an EMT, I went to Pensacola, Florida, with my girlfriend at the time while she was in ultrasound school.

MY MEETING WITH AN ANGEL: NEW DIRECTIONS AND VISIONS However, I couldn’t find any work in Pensacola as it was a very depressed economic area at the time. One day, in the midst of multiple arguments over money with my girlfriend, we went to church across the street. The rest is history.

Then the next day, I took a walk along the bay, which was pretty much an abandoned area. The only way to it was over a dune, and the only way out was back up over the dune.

There was nobody around.

Then out of nowhere, a man walks up behind me, wearing a black suit, holding a Bible, and he wanted to talk to me about Jesus. Then knowing he had sent IAMUNBREAKABLE.COM

a “message,” I watched him walk up over the dune. I ran up to look for him and he was gone. That was my first encounter with an Angel.

God’s word says we entertain Angels, unaware.

When I walked home that day, I met a guy named Scott working on a bicycle, and after 3 1/2 months of looking for work, he told me he’d give me a job the next day doing screen printing.

He went on to tell me, “You need to go home. You need to go back to school.” He went on to tell me how to get free money for college, what to do, where to go, and get it.

I was deeply perplexed about who

Well, a few more months passed, and I went home and met up with my friend Sammy who traveled the country in a converted school bus, and we decided that we were going to go around the country and sell our items at flea markets. At the screenprinting company, they always had defects, and they would just throw them out. So, I asked if I could have them: everything from T-shirts, sunglasses to clothing; you name it. So, we ended up back in Pensacola, Florida, coincidentally, the same place I discovered Jesus – a newfound relationship that would flourish.

Despite friction with Sammy while living with him, we took on work at Eglin Air Force Base for $5 an hour, breaking concrete in 95° weather. I was miserable.

One day, I had my lunch in a shady spot.

There was a young man who called out my name. He asked, “Ken, can you come over here?” I looked around, and I saw this

he was, but I decided to listen to him. Then the next day, I drove home in my step-van, with little money, selling items along the way. I somehow managed to sell a windbreaker to a toll attendant for $5.75 to finally make it home.

Once home, I made some phone calls, and within a couple of weeks, I was in ultrasound school, pretty much paid for it by Pell Grants, just as the Angel told me on that hot summer day. I graduated with a 96.7 GPA, then was hired immediately by a mobile ultrasound company. I went on to get five Registries in Ultrasound.

I am one of 25-30 Ultrasound Techs in the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

I even have 1.4 million miles of driving, and I am now a Certified Animal Ultrasound Tech and a Certified Nerve Conduction Tech.

My biggest struggle was growing up with an abusive and alcoholic father who used to beat us and my mom. We used to have to run 2-3 times a week to my aunt or my grandma’s. He was a talented man, an artist who had many skillsets, but this relationship was short-lived as he died at 41 from alcohol and tobacco abuse.

childhood when I would walk by myself in the woods or up on my roof just to get away from the trouble at home. I have literally hundreds of melodies recorded.

At the age of 63, I finally got my opportunity to start recording my own music with my nephew, Matthew, who is 33. The rest is history “churning out my hit songs” at 65.

MAKING THE LEAP INTO THE ENTREPRENEURIAL WORLD: MOVEMENT FORWARD Over the years I have discovered so much about my family, my father, my career, my relationships, and my music. Somehow, thanks to the Angels along the way, I found myself, and new chapters began emerging.

While I spent time as an entrepreneur selling items at flea markets years ago, my real entrepreneurial journey kicked into full gear after one bad fart my brother Jeff let out one day.

With this, I launched The Fart Pad. At that time, Dr.

Scholls foot pads came out, and I knew there needed to be something similar to the bum as the feet. I took my design idea to an invention company, and they loved it. I got it patented, but they dropped the ball and completely screwed me over. While I thought the power of this relationship was solid with the invention company, I had to sue them and lost my patent through that process, and I just couldn’t afford to renew it.

Having a new family and the costs being massive, I decided to put the Fart Pad behind me; however, my entrepreneurial journey continues as I just launched ProSledge – an innovative modular weighted vest. ProSledge is an idea I have had for years, and it’s incredible to see it all come to fruition while learning from past experiences of the “wows” that come with running a business and getting a concept off the ground.

Lord Jesus Christ is the one I credit for my journey for the people I have and will continue to meet along the way, and he’s helped me with ProSledge launching. It’s hailed as one of the most versatile and one of the heaviest and the best vests on the market.
