VO: Next you need to ensure that the fixings – the rivets, rungs, screws and bolts – aren’t missing, loose or corroded. If they are then don’t use it. See it, sort it and report it.

VO: If the front stiles and legs are in bad condition, then this could also cause an issue with holding your weight and giving your shoes a stable grip. Ensure that they are not bent, bowed, twisted, dented, cracked, corroded or rotten and are in good condition.

VO: If you are working around ladders then you should have heard of the 1 in 4 rule. Ladders should only be placed where it can be angled at 75˚, and the 1 in 4 rule is a way of calculating this without the use of a ruler.

VO: The difference between ladders and stepladders is that stepladders can support themselves. They are useful for jobs such as fixing a light or wiring in the middle of a room.

VO: Because they don’t need to be leant against a wall they are of great use when you need to reach something in an open area or where there is little surrounding support.

VO: Also check the condition of the stepladder platform and decide if you’re willing to place your life on it.

VO: The most important part for holding the ladder in place is the lock-spreader, so make sure this clicks securely and holds your weight – otherwise it’s no more useful than balancing a leaning ladder in the air.

VO: And that refers to anything – mountain climbing, wall climbing and climbing to the top of your career will all be difficult unless in sensible shoes and they’re far more comfortable to work in.

VO: To play it safe, you should only use a ladder for a maximum of 30 minutes and for light work. If we haven’t mentioned it before, ladders are not suitable for heavy work.

VO: You should also only use stepladders where a handhold is available to minimise risk of falling – unless you are using a platform (top step) specifically designed for your tools.

VO: As with all equipment, when a ladder is no longer safe it needs to be disposed of. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as simply throwing it in the dump.

VO: It must not only be destroyed but actually idiot-proofed, so anyone who comes across the ladder won’t assume it is still safe to use.

VO: If the ladder is kept in its full form or cut in half across the stiles then this could be misconstrued as a safe ladder or two, safe, shorter ladders. Action:

VO: Unfortunately, this naïve assumption on the onlooker’s part could still incriminate you for not disposing of the ladder properly.

VO: To avoid a hefty fine, cut the ladder in half directly down the centre of the rungs instead, then bin it, chop it, recycle it or use its parts to create a decorative new wall display.
