Kaktovik Interim School completed by ACHC
In mid-September, through its family of companies, ASRC Construction (ACHC) began the final work on the interim Harold Kaveolook School in Kaktovik, Alaska. A fire destroyed the school in early February of this year, leaving more than 70 students in the community with nowhere to attend classes. Through coordination between ACHC, the North Slope Borough and the community of Kaktovik, the interim school was completed and school resumed in the village on September 17.
“They’re happy, they’re excited – they’ve been wanting to come into the new school to start learning,” said Brandi Going, a teacher aide at the Harold Kaveolook School. “They want to see their friends more often.”

Logistics and weather were the biggest challenges for crews. Through months of the construction, tons of freight and supplies needed to be shipped to Barter Island.
“We had several DC-6s come in and some smaller planes,” said ASKW Project Manager Chris Elken. “We were averaging a DC-6 every week. We had a good crew and we made it happen. Hopefully they enjoy it.”
