La GardenLibrary del CIHEAM-Bari

non a caso il motto della Garden Library del CIHEAM di Bari è: Garden Library - Garden City - Garden World. Con questo progetto si vuole contribuire a rafforzare il dialogo interculturale tra i diversi Paesi del Mediterraneo, alimentando la costruzione di una immagine positiva di quest'area e del suo futuro basata sulla necessità di protezione e condivisione delle risorse disponibili, e proprio in quest'ottica si stanno avviando alcune iniziative.

A Better Deal for Libraries and their Users: IFLA Addresses World Intellectual Property Meeting La GardenLibrary del Centro Documentale dell'Istituto Agronomico Mediterraneo di Bari è una biblioteca specializzata con un patrimonio di oltre 5000 volumi sui temi della Biodiversità, Agricoltura Biologica, Dieta Mediterranea, Gestione Sostenibile del Suolo e delle Risorse Idriche, Protezione Integrata delle Colture Orto-frutticole Mediterranee, Aree Protette, Orti e Giardini. In una visione olistica, la mission della Garden Library è quella di promuovere nel Mediterraneo la cultura della conservazione, protezione e contemplazione della vita, con un'attenzione particolare alla biodiversità del nostro pianeta: il Giardino della Terra. IFLA took the floor three times during the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva, calling on ministers, heads of intellectual property offices and diplomats to agree on copyright reforms that will allow libraries to do the best by their users.

The General Assembly is the high point of the WIPO

year, offering an opportunity to celebrate successes, overcome challenges, and set the general direction of the organisation. IFLA attended alongside EIFL, and a number of other groups supporting access to knowledge.

Among the successes, the historic first meeting of the Marrakesh Assembly saw the 22 countries which have already ratified the Treaty of Marrakesh to celebrate the steps they have taken, and to call on others to join them. In the course of the meeting, Botswana and Sri Lanka did indeed do so, as has Liberia subsequently, taking the total to 25.

Many IFLA representatives played a major role in getting the Treaty agreed, and many more members have long been working on the ground to achieve its objectives. IFLA's statement recognised this work, and called on Member States to ensure they provide maximum access to knowledge when putting Marrakesh to work.

progress on work on libraries, archives and museums at WIPO's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR).

While there remains disagreement about the form of a final deal, all recognised the value of the work libraries do. With the European Union – so far among the reluctant to make progress – itself proposing mandatory cross-border exceptions to copyright, there are signs that even Brussels accepts the value of such measures in a globalised, digital age.

IFLA and EIFL also took the opportunity to meet with a dozen member states, in order to talk about the work of libraries in their countries, and how to support them through change at WIPO.

Call for abstracts is now open for DIGITAL HUMANITIES – O P P O RT U N I T I E S A N D R I S K S : CONNECTING LIBRARIES AND RESEARCH. This three-day international conference will bring together notable cultural heritage, research and infrastructure organizations, as well as acclaimed keynote speakers in the field. The event will explore and discuss the above themes with the aim of enriching and cementing the links between research, the public and memory institutions, further defining the critical role of libraries in the process, supporting open data in the humanities and understanding better how to create new and sophisticated interactions with the digital public.

Therefore we also invite submissions for papers of 20minutes duration on – but not limited to - the following and related topics: · Enrichment of digital documents ·Research impact through cultural heritage institutions · Building networks between GLAMs and universities · Citizen Science and the social meaning of collections · Assessing the cultural and economic value of GLAMs · Digitizing for the Digital Arts and Humanities · Community archive building and the researcher ·The independent scholar and library special collections · New forms of academic digital publishing · NGOs and GLAMs · Improving the citability of humanities data · Taking academe to the people: GLAMs as bridges to social research Initial abstracts of no more than 500 words must be made electronically and sent by the 31st of December 2016 to: info@dariah.eu The reviewing process will be completed in the end of January

2017. Abstracts selected must be as presentations submitted until May 1. The camera ready manuscripts should be available by July 1 to publish in an openaccess collection. The final versions of presentations should have arrived no later than August 1.

Access to knowledge at the heart of the profession and a key to sustainable development

by Steven W. Witt Open access to scholarly literature, the role of knowledge production in development, and the continued inequality in information access among the world's populations are key areas of focus within the international community. The Paris Agreement of 2015 emphasizes the need for public access to information and the important role of knowledge creation and technology transfer in addressing successfully the astounding economic, social, and political challenges embedded in solutions to global issues such as sustainable development (United Nations, 2016). The Lyon Declaration (2014) and IFLA's key strategic initiatives make clear that the library and information community is keenly aware of these challenges and is working to partner with the academic community, civil society, private sector, governments, and the public as a whole to broaden access to knowledge through more equitable dissemination and broader participation in research.

As this issue of IFLA journal makes clear, there is much progress in the field, but we still face many challenges.

The Directory of Open Access Journals (2016) exemplifies in many ways the growth of openaccess as a means to both disseminate and access knowledge with articles in over 100 languages and representing 136 countries. As research highlighted in this journal suggests, representation among journals and authors from developing nations is increasing within the open access community. Questions abound, however, concerning the rate of open access growth as it relates to perceptions of quality and value within the academic community. Whether scholars and the academic systems that nurture their development can and will accept this mode of publication is unknown. Systems geared toward evaluating scholarly impact are still bound to traditional modes of dissemination and production. The scholarly production system is built upon a vast infrastructure that enjoys support through entrenched public and private partnerships. The future of open access is also challenged by the advent of predatory publishers who take advantage of increases in scholarly output, the drive to disseminate research globally, and economic imperative to develop research strengths. As reported by Beall (2016), the number of so-called predatory journals has increased in the past three years from 126 to 882. This is a phenomenon that

negatively impacts both the independent open access community and traditional publishers through hijacked publications, misleading metrics, and general confusion regarding promising new modes of knowledge creation and dissemination. This uncertainty no doubt reinforces the conservative approach of the scholarly community to moving further towards open-access.

For the library and information community, the creation of new academic systems, such as seen in Kuwait, uncertainty about Open Access in developing countries, and the need to better provide access to communities such as some of those found in rural Africa present opportunities and challenges. This is an opportunity for the profession to contribute its knowledge and expertise toward navigating the growing thicket of the information environment. The challenge, however, is continuing to develop knowledge and practices that contribute to resolving the problems facing the world's populations. These problems include issues around access, which are highlighted in this issue. At the same time, they include questions about preserving our cultural heritage, ensuring freeaccess to information while advocating for privacy, promoting literacy and education, and partnering with the scientific community to support data-intensive research. At the heart of all of these issues, however, is ensuring the broadest possible access to information and means of knowledge production.

Piccole e povere, ecco lo stato delle biblioteche scolastiche oggi in Italia Hanno meno libri di cinque anni fa, spazi che rasentano lo zero e meno di 4 libri in media a studente. E' quanto emerge dall'indagine a cura dell'Associazione Italiana Editori …

Piccole e povere. Potrebbe riassumersi così il quadro che emerge dall'indagine a cura dell'Associazione Italiana Editori (AIE) e dell'Associazione Italiana Biblioteche (AIB) per #ioleggoperché e realizzata dall'Ufficio studi AIE sulla situazione delle biblioteche scolastiche italiane, così come evidenziato dalle risposte di 1.222 scuole aderenti al progetto che hanno accettato di partecipare all'indagine per fotografare la situazione. Il 97,4% delle scuole italiane ha oggi una biblioteca scolastica, certo, ma con una dotazione di libri notevolmente inferiore rispetto a solo 5 anni fa: in

media 2.501 volumi per scuola, nel 2.011 erano 3017.

Pochi? Pochissimi se consideriamo che in media questo significa 3,9 libri per studente, mentre nel 2011 erano 4,7.

I DATI – La situazione è peggiorata, non solo come offerta ma anche in termini di spazi: esiste quasi un 10% di scuole tra le intervistate che rispondono di avere sì una biblioteca ma con posti a sedere zero.

Emerge una situazione non certo rosea: la spesa complessiva per il funzionamento della biblioteca nel 2016 è di 441 euro, in pratica si è più che dimezzata rispetto ai 1.189 euro investiti nel 2011. Questo si traduce in una spesa media complessiva di 1,18 euro per studente nel 2016 (era di 1,56 euro nel 2011).

NUMERI IN CALO – Non va meglio neppure se si osserva la spesa media per l'acquisto di libri per studente. La biblioteca di ogni istituto ha investito 0,37 euro nel 2016, in calo rispetto al 2011 quando era di 0,57 euro. Calano anche i libri entrati nel patrimonio delle biblioteche: nel 2016 sono 113 in media, erano 130 nel 2011.

CHI SI PRENDE CURA DELLE BIBLIOTECHE? – A rimanere costanti sono le ore giornaliere di apertura della biblioteca: nel 2016 sono 3 ore e 34 minuti in media mentre nel 2011 erano 3 ore e 44 minuti. Una conferma arriva dalle persone addette alle biblioteche che nel 2016 come nel 2011 sono 1,5. Ma quali sono le tipologie professionali che fanno funzionare le biblioteche scolastiche? La maggioranza è rappresentata dagli insegnanti (57,9% nel 2016, erano il 63,5% nel 2011) seguiti dai volontari (nel 2016 sono il 37,1%, erano il 34% nel 2011) mentre solo il 5% è rappresentato da bibliotecari (nel 2011 erano il 2,5%).

Nessun dubbio almeno sullo scopo della biblioteca che è la promozione della lettura tra gli studenti (per il 94,7%), il prestito e la consultazione individuale (per il 70,2%) e il supporto alla programmazione didattica (per il 22,8%). #IOLEGGOPERCHE' – Del tutto mancante invece l'inserimento delle biblioteche nel sistema bibliotecario territoriale. Ne fanno parte solo l'11,3%, mentre nel 2011 erano il 10,4%. L'iniziativa di #ioleggoperché per le biblioteche scolastiche è dunque necessaria e secondo le scuole che hanno partecipato al sondaggio “per avere effetti concreti dovrà replicarsi per più anni”: “Il quadro che ne emerge è davvero desolante – ha sottolineato Federico Motta, Presidente dell'AIE -. Contiamo davvero che #ioleggoperché possa essere una prima risposta. Per questo, lo ribadiamo, la partecipazione di tutti i cittadini che vorranno donare un libro fino al 30 ottobre alle biblioteche scolastiche può fare la differenza. In gioco non c'è una posta piccola, di qualche decina di migliaia di libri, ma il nervo scoperto del nostro Paese, la nostra crescita”.

Mediterranean Agronomic Institue of Bari non ci sorprendono particolarmente; purtroppo la fotografia che se ne ricava è sconfortante, anche se conosciamo bene diversi casi che si collocano in controtendenza – ha commentato Enrica Manenti, Presidente dell'AIB -. I punti di massima debolezza sono la mancanza di obiettivi chiari e la conseguente scarsità di risorse finanziarie e umane. Sottolineiamo come le biblioteche scolastiche spesso non colgano l'occasione della presenza nei territori delle biblioteche civiche e dei sistemi bibliotecari , spesso lavorando da sole, il che è sempre sbagliato. Altra criticità è che la mancanza di personale professionale o 'professionalizzabile', sommando debolezza a debolezza, impedisce il governo e lo sviluppo di queste strutture, che invece sono fondamentali in un Paese civile”.

I RACCONTI – Sono tante le storie che si raccontano ancora oggi sulla vita dei custodi che vivevano all'interno della New York Public Library. In particolare, Bustle.com racconta che la figlia di uno di loro crebbe tra gli scaffali della biblioteca, organizzando lì le sue feste di compleanno e leggendo ogni giorno tutti i libri che desiderava.

GLI APPARTAMENTI SEGRETI – Visitare adesso le vecchie abitazioni dei custodi della libreria mette quasi i brividi, ma gli appartamenti della New York Public Library nel corso degli anni non hanno mai perso il loro fascino ed il loro mistero. Al momento sono rimaste soltanto 13 abitazioni, completamente vittime della polvere e dei segni del tempo, che presto spariranno portando via il sogno di poter alloggiare, anche solo per una notte, all'interno di una delle biblioteche più belle di New York.

New York public Library, la storia di chi ha vissuto nella biblioteca

Terremoto centro Italia: recuperato l'archivio storico del Comune di Amatrice

Avete mai sognato di vivere all'interno di una biblioteca a New York? Fino a qualche anno fa era possibile soggiornare nella famosissima biblioteca pubblica della città…

Ogni lettore, almeno una volta nella vita, ha fantasticato di passare un'intera notte tra gli scaffali colmi di libri di una biblioteca? E se vi dicessimo che era addirittura possibile vivere all'interno della New York Public Library? Proprio così. E, avendo a completa disposizione tutti i volumi di questa grandissima biblioteca, molti amanti dei libri non troverebbero molto tempo per uscire ed esplorare la città. All'interno della biblioteca pubblica di New York si trovavano degli appartamenti in cui vivevano i custodi insieme alle loro famiglie e, ora che verranno definitivamente sostituiti da stanze di lettura e sale di incontro, è interessante rivivere insieme la loro storia.

LA STORIA – Circa un secolo fa, la biblioteca di New York veniva riscaldata da una caldaia che non poteva mai essere spenta per impedire che il grande ambiente si raffreddasse. Per questo i guardiani della New York Public Library vivevano, insieme alle loro famiglie all'interno della biblioteca e si turnavano durante la notte per mantenerla sempre in funzione. Quando la caldaia a carbone smise di essere utilizzata, tutte le famiglie lasciarono pian piano l'edificio che rimase tuttavia parzialmente abitato fino all'inizio degli anni 2000.

È stato recuperato l'archivio storico del Comune di Amatrice, sono stati salvati 774 faldoni e 318 registri per un totale di 7.871 fascicoli. Lo riferisce il Mibact, specificando che l'operazione è stata effettuata dai tecnici delle squadre di rilevamento danni del ministero, assistiti dai restauratori dell'Istituto Centrale per il Restauro e la Conservazione del Patrimonio Archivistico e Librario e coadiuvati dai Vigili del Fuoco, dai Carabinieri del Comando Tutela Patrimonio Culturale e da uomini e mezzi del Corpo Forestale dello Stato.

"Il tempestivo intervento del Mibact -ha affermato il ministro dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo, Dario Franceschini- ha permesso di salvare per intero un importante patrimonio documentario, evitando che Amatrice, oltre alla devastazione di un sisma, subisca anche la cancellazione della propria memoria storica, come purtroppo avvenuto in passato.

Prosegue così il prezioso lavoro che i tecnici del ministero stanno compiendo insieme ai carabinieri per la tutela del patrimonio culturale, i vigili del fuoco e la protezione civile per recuperare e mettere in sicurezza opere e beni di valore storico e artistico di grande

La ricca documentazione che conserva la memoria storica di Amatrice è stata già trasferita presso l'Archivio di Stato di Rieti dove verrà ricondizionata e, dove necessario, restaurata. Tra i documenti più importanti vi sono i preziosi registri dello stato civile napoleonico e il catasto murattiano, parte dei quali erano già in restauro presso l'Archivio di Stato di Rieti.

Tra i tanti è stato recuperato un faldone che contiene le carte riguardanti i progetti di miglioramento del corso Umberto I che oggi offre una delle immagini più emblematiche della devastazione di Amatrice. I primi documenti risalgono al XVIII secolo, dal momento che i terremoti del 1639 e del 1703 avevano a suo tempo provocato la dispersione della documentazione precedente.

1. Caffè Gambrinus, Napoli, via Chiaia (angolo tra piazza Trieste e Trento e piazza del Plebiscito). Se hai sempre sognato di gustare un caffè al tavolo attorno cui si sedevano D'Annunzio e Hemingway, questo è il posto che fa per te. Il locale deve il suo nome a Gambrinus, mitologico re delle Fiandre, inventore della birra.

2. Antico Caffè Greco, Roma, via dei Condotti. Un tempo meta di Goethe e Gogol', oggi è un vero e proprio museo che ospita centinaia di opere d'arte.

3. Caffè Rosati, Roma, piazza del Popolo. Personaggi come Pier Paolo Pasolini e Italo Calvino si ritrovavano qui con gli sceneggiatori di Cinecittà per trarvi

ispirazione.

4. Caffe dell'Ussero, Pisa, Palazzo Agostini, Lungarno Pacinotti. A Pisa, il Caffè dell'Ussero saprà trasmetterti un po' del clima risorgimentale che si respirava in città. Alle pareti si leggono pensieri di nomi importanti della letteratura, primo fra tutti Giosuè Carducci, di casa al caffè pisano.

5. Caffè delle Giubbe Rosse, Firenze, piazza della Repubblica. Il famoso Caffè delle Giubbe Rosse apre i battenti nel 1897. Il locale è stato il cuore pulsante della vita intellettuale cittadina sino agli anni Quaranta del secolo scorso. Deve il suo nome alla divisa dei camerieri, rossa come quella in uso nei locali viennesi.

Vale la pena accomodarsi nelle sale interne per respirare l'atmosfera e ammirare le foto dei grandi nomi che in passato hanno popolato il caffè.

6. Caffè Florian, Venezia, piazza San Marco.

Impossibile rimanere indifferenti al fascino del Caffè Florian di Venezia, il più antico caffè d'Italia. Fondato nel 1720, le sue sale sfarzose hanno accolto personaggi del calibro di Carlo Goldoni, Giacomo Casanova, Giuseppe Parini, Lord Byron, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Ugo Foscolo, Charles Dickens e Marcel Proust. In origine chiamato “Alla Venezia trionfante”, il caffè viene subito rinominato dai veneziani con il nome del fondatore Floriano Francesconi.

7. Grancaffè Quadri, Venezia, piazza San Marco.

L'elegantissimo Grancaffe Quadri è un locale del Settecento con stucchi e dipinti alle pareti che meritano di essere visti.

8. Caffè Pedrocchi, Padova, via VIII febbraio. Molto piu di un semplice bar, il Caffè Pedrocchi è ritenuto a ragion veduta uno dei monumenti architettonici di Padova. Nato come torrefazione, nel 1826 viene trasformato secondo lo stile neoclassico. Spesso protagonista di convegni letterari, gode di grandissima fama per tutto l'Ottocento, tanto da essere definito da Stendhal il caffè «le meilleur d'Italie».

9. Caffè Tommaseo, Trieste, piazza Tommaseo. Al Caffè Tommaseo erano di casa accese discussioni politiche e letterarie a cui anche James Joyce ha preso parte. Dagli anni Cinquanta è tutelato come monumento storico, da visitare assieme agli altri locali storici come il Caffe degli Specchi in Piazza dell'Unità, il Caffè San Marco di via Battisti, e il Pirona in Largo della Barriera Vecchia.

10. Caffè Al Bicerin, Torino, piazza della Consolata.

Luogo imperdibile in cui gustare l'originale bicerin, la gustosa combinazione di caffè, cioccolato e latte, che da Torino ha conquistato le caffetterie di mezzo mondo.

Il libro ha lo scopo di illustrare come le comunità professionali interpretino il concetto di apprendimento in rete a favore dei processi di creazione, gestione e condivisione della conoscenza. In questo senso, dopo aver posizionato l'apprendimento "in rete" (e "a rete") nel quadro più ampio dei modelli di e-learning, e discussa la sua strategicità per le dinamiche di crescita endogena interne alle organizzazioni, il testo si propone di delineare quale tipo di sviluppo organizzativo sia necessario per aumentare l'efficacia delle comunità professionali, salvaguardandone al contempo identità e autonomia. Un'attenzione particolare è rivolta a quelle comunità che fanno della rete il loro principale ambiente d'interazione (le cosiddette comunità online), mettendo in evidenza come lo spazio virtuale che le ospita debba essere minuziosamente progettato così come minuziosa è bene che sia la scelta delle tecnologie di rete necessarie alla sua implementazione. Se però da un lato tali tecnologie possono di fatto migliorare e rendere più efficace l'azione delle comunità a vantaggio dei programmi di knowledge management, dall'altro è essenziale comprenderne appieno le peculiarità, soprattutto riguardo i diversi tipi di comunicazione che sono in grado di attuare. È per questo che, nella sezione conclusiva del libro, si è ritenuto importante dedicare ampi spazi di approfondimento alle tecnologie per l'interazione di gruppo, la produzione collaborativa, la rappresentazione concettuale delle conoscenze nonché la gestione e la condivisone dei repositori info-conoscitivi. Guglielmo Trentin svolge la sua attività di ricerca presso l'Istituto Tecnologie Didattiche del CNR di Genova, dove dal 1985 si occupa dell'uso formativo delle risorse telematiche. Nel corso della sua attività professionale ha curato la progettazione e lo sviluppo di sistemi per l'apprendimento in rete, sperimentato il "collaborative learning" nei diversi contesti della formazione (scuola, impresa e Università), assunto incarichi di responsabilità scientifica in progetti e commissioni ministeriali, universitarie e del CNR. È autore di numerose pubblicazioni su riviste internazionali e di alcuni volumi sui temi del "networked learning". Attualmente è docente di Sistemi per l'apprendimento in rete e di Sistemi per la gestione di comunità professionali in rete nell'ambito della laurea specialistica Reti telematiche per applicazioni socio-economiche, presso l'Università degli Studi di Torino.

Una metamorfosi dovuta al dilagante affermarsi del web 2.0 e dei network sociali, che obbliga il sistema educativo a ridisegnare il proprio "territorio" epistemologico in termini sia di obiettivi formativi e programmi di studio che in termini metodologici e didattici; ridefinizione, questa, che si rende necessaria per cogliere le opportunità offerte dai nuovi media e, soprattutto, per adeguare le strategie educative agli stili cognitivi della generazione digitale. I nostri giovani, infatti, nati nella società informazionale, sviluppano sin dalla prima infanzia una forma mentis diversa dalla generazione precedente nel modo di appropriarsi del sapere, di rappresentarsi il mondo, di costruire ed esercitare le proprie abilità, che si rifà inevitabilmente all'uso quotidiano e costante delle tecnologie di cui si circondano: smartphone, iPod, tablet. La realtà di oggi evidenzia quasi una "compulsiva" esigenza da parte di molti, soprattutto delle nuove generazioni, di far uso dei nuovi artefatti tecnologici; un dato di fatto che impegna tutti a esplorare le implicazioni sull'uomo dell'uso del nuovo network, in termini cognitivi, relazionali, educativi e socio-culturali. Il testo, pertanto, si propone di analizzare la proliferazione delle tecnologie dell'informazione e della comunicazione e il suo effetto sulle pratiche educative con una precisa prospettiva d'indagine: quella che mette a fuoco l'intersezione tra neuroscienze-educazione-tecnologie, definendo tale reciproca contaminazione una delle chiavi di volta possibili per comprendere le dinamiche intellettive, affettivo-emotive e motivazionali dei nativi digitali, e di conseguenza un passaggio scientifico-culturale obbligato con il quale iniziare a rileggere e ridefinire il sistema didattico-pedagogico, che dovrà sempre più essere rivolto alla digitalità e ai suoi effetti sui processi di apprendimento e insegnamento.

In didattica, superato l'approccio prodotto-processo, ovvero l'ottica per cui l'apprendimento determina l'insegnamento, da un lato è stato rivalutato l'insegnamento e il ruolo dell'insegnante, dall'altro si è aperta una ricerca sulla centralità dell'azione, come spazio tempo dell'interazione didattica, e sul ruolo delle tecnologie nel contesto attuale dell'educazione. Tutto ciò esige una riflessione sul senso e sui modelli della progettazione didattica. Diana Laurillard sviluppa tale riflessione partendo da quattro domande: cosa è oggi l'apprendimento formale, con quale bagaglio gli studenti lo affrontano, cosa serve per l'apprendimento, cosa per l'insegnamento. In base alle risposte, frutto di una ricerca a tutto campo sulla produzione scientifica internazionale, Laurillard propone il Conversational Framework con cui analizza le interazioni educative e i principali processi di apprendimento. Ne individua cinque, che passano attraverso l'acquisizione, la ricerca, la discussione, la pratica e la collaborazione. Per ogni processo indica dei pattern didattici ovvero delle modalità operative che, pur evitando la semplificazione e la prescrittività, forniscono utili indicazioni e orientano i docenti. Nella parte finale indica anche un modello per progettare per attività e fornisce utili suggerimenti su come predisporre e descrivere un progetto. Propone le TLA (Teaching learning activities) come colonne portanti dell'impianto didattico. Le TLA sono gli "oggetti" che il docente predispone per supportare i processi di apprendimento e sono organizzate in differenti categorie. Postula anche un parametro di qualità dato da un'equilibrata presenza delle tipologie di apprendimento. Il testo definisce la professionalità docente. Per l'autrice possiamo definire l'insegnamento come scienza della progettazione in quanto si occupa di come migliorare l'esistente, a differenza delle scienze esatte che descrivono le cose per come sono. La progettazione è oggi ancor di più al centro del fare del docente in quanto il contesto attuale, sempre più complesso e provvisorio, richiede a scuole e università di avviare le future generazioni alle competenze e alla capacità di affrontare situazioni problematiche sempre diverse e in divenire. Per rendere sostenibili i processi di insegnamento, sempre più complessi, e la progettazione didattica due sono i principali strumenti in mano ai docenti: la collaborazione tra professionisti (il modello proposto e la raccolta dei pattern vanno in questa direzione) e il supporto delle tecnologie, "l'eroe" della storia, come afferma Laurillard. Ma non tanto l'introduzione nella scuola della tecnologia creata e realizzata per altri scopi, ma una tecnologia alla cui progettazione collaborano i docenti, una tecnologia che potrebbe modificare profondamente la relazione con la conoscenza e con i processi di conoscenza. Ma questo solo se la didattica, come scienza della progettazione, è il riferimento per la realizzazione degli artefatti e se i docenti prendono consapevolezza della loro professionalità e collaborano attivamente alla predisposizione di tecnologie per la formazione.

La dimensione problematica della rivoluzione digitale - il suo lato oscuro - è oramai un tema ineludibile che va compreso all'interno delle più generali dinamiche dell'evoluzione tecnologica. Questo libro vuole innanzitutto contribuire a leggere il fenomeno nella sua articolazione e complessità per restituirne la ricchezza, l'applicabilità diffusa e anche la sua fascinosità, persino nelle dimensioni più critiche e criticabili. Ma il vero obbiettivo è contribuire a contrastare - non semplicemente riducendolo o esorcizzandolo - il crescente sospetto nei confronti della Rete e delle sue potenti tecnologie e il timore che le sue promesse non possano essere mantenute. Il tema non è recente ma, nell'ultimo periodo, la sua rilevanza è cresciuta con vigore. Le inesattezze e falsificazioni di Wikipedia, il potere sotterraneo e avvolgente di Google, la fragilità psicologica indotta dagli universi digitali, il finto attivismo politico digitale svelato dall'espressione clicktivism, il diluvio incontenibile della posta elettronica, il pauroso conto energetico dei data centre, i comportamenti scorretti dei nuovi capitani dell'impresa digitale sono solo alcuni dei problemi che stanno emergendo, con sempre maggiore intensità e frequenza. Che fare allora? Innanzitutto comprendere il fenomeno andando in profondità; non fermandosi alla superficie, spesso luccicante ma ingannevole. E poi (ri)costruire una cultura e una sensibilità al digitale, che ci diano indicazioni su come maneggiarlo e cosa non chiedergli. Questo saggio di Granelli non vuole dunque offrire una banale alfabetizzazione, ma si pone come vera e propria guida che ci aiuta a cogliere le peculiarità di questo straordinario ecosistema e a guidarne le logiche progettuali e i processi di adozione, tenendo a bada le sue dimensioni problematiche, che vanno comprese e reindirizzate, e non semplicemente rimosse.

Poco più di due milioni di anni fa l'uomo ha iniziato un viaggio che, a partire dalla lavorazione di poche pietre scheggiate, lo ha portato a incidere significativamente nella storia del pianeta e a creare menti artificiali con le quali entrare in relazione.

Ripercorrendo le tappe principali dello sviluppo della mente, il volume evidenzia il fondamentale contributo delle tecnologie che essa stessa ha prodotto: le realizzazioni della mente sono riconosciute come strumenti in grado di intervenire sul modo in cui elaboriamo la conoscenza e come controparti artificiali di un sistema mentale che evolve grazie a loro - e tramite loro concretizza il suo destino. Il nuovo libro di Milton Bennett Principi di Comunicazione Interculturale. Paradigmi e pratiche non è solo una nuova edizione di Principi di comunicazione interculturale, tradotto e pubblicato in Italia nel 2002 da FrancoAngeli. Seppure mantenga la struttura di testo con sezione antologica, è completamente rinnovato nei contenuti. Nelle prima parte l'autore si concentra sull'accuratezza del lessico e dei livelli di analisi appropriati per potere parlare di comunicazione interculturale. Focalizza poi la propria prospettiva entro la dimensione epistemologica costruttivista, alla base del noto Modello Dinamico di Sensibilità Interculturale (MDSI). Lo stesso modello è qui presentato nella sua ultima versione in cui rivede alcune posizioni e soprattutto suggerisce un diverso linguaggio per riferirsi al continuum di esperienza della differenza all'interno del paradigma quantistico. In questa nuova edizione amplia i contenuti relativi all'analisi dell'interazione tra persone di culture diverse, pubblicando finalmente anche la sua teoria di stili percettivi sottostanti il modo in cui individui con diverso retroterra culturale preferiscono, collettivamente, pensare e imparare.

Infine inserisce un capitolo su come la prospettiva interculturale costruttivista si declina in diverse applicazioni pratiche. Nella seconda parte offre una selezione di letture antologiche "classiche" su alcuni concetti fondamentali della comunicazione interculturale.

Negli ultimi 50 anni è cambiata la composizione della forza lavoro. È cambiato il motore dell'economia. Sono cambiate le tecnologie per il trattamento del sapere. È cambiata la velocità con cui si accresce la conoscenza. La popolazione mondiale è aumentata di 5,5 miliardi di individui. Per i fenomeni migratori, è cambiata la composizione della popolazione italiana. È cambiata la percezione della limitatezza delle risorse del pianeta. Todo cambia. Certo, in questo lasso di tempo, qualche modifica c'è stata per tentare di colmare il baratro che la separa dalla società. Ma le finalità, la struttura, l'organizzazione, l'idea di apprendimento, la cultura cartacea su cui è basata, gli edifici, le aule, le apparecchiature, sono rimaste praticamente le stesse. Questa non può essere la scuola della società digitale. Come potrebbe essere la nuova scuola? Questo libro, realizzato da 17 autori impegnati su diversi fronti dell'innovazione scolastica, cerca di dare una risposta, sia con contributi che delineano l'idea di una scuola nuova, precisando che non è un problema di macchine, sia con proposte che affrontano temi cruciali, emersi dalla diffusione capillare delle tecnologie digitali.

Come sfruttare per l'apprendimento la commistione tra gli spazi fisici e gli spazi virtuali, in cui siamo permanentemente immersi? In che cosa consiste l'educazione al pensiero computazionale? Che ruolo possono avere i giochi in una didattica centrata sullo studente? Chi sono i maker? E perché la scuola deve occuparsene e come si possono realizzare spazi in cui possano lavorare? Quali sono gli strumenti che aiutano gli insegnanti nella progettazione di ambienti di apprendimento? E quali ostacoli si frappongono all'uso delle tecnologie? Come ripensare la conoscenza? Il problema che abbiamo di fronte non è introdurre le tecnologie digitali in questa scuola, ma creare una scuola diversa, capace di mettere in grado gli individui, che vivono nell'era digitale, di scegliere un modello di vita per loro adeguato, rispondendo così alle esigenze di uno sviluppo giusto e sostenibile.

I digital media hanno invaso ogni esperienza della vita collettiva, ridefinendo spazi e tempi della comunicazione e, più in generale, della quotidianità. Hanno comportato la nascita di nuovi luoghi d'incontro, divenendo spazi privilegiati per molti individui, e hanno dato vita a un nuovo modo non solo di interagire, ma anche di guardare la tv, ascoltare la musica, leggere un giornale, fare formazione. Il testo tratta, parallelamente, i mutamenti tecnologici e quelli della struttura sociale. L'intento è quello di offrire a studenti e studiosi di scienze sociali e della comunicazione uno strumento che permetta loro di approfondire, soprattutto in chiave didattica, tematiche di grande attualità, senza eccessivi tecnicismi e con forti agganci a quelle teorie che sono ormai da considerarsi "classiche" nell'ambito dell'analisi sui nuovi scenari sociali. A una prima parte dedicata allo sviluppo delle prime teorie formulate fino a oggi segue l'analisi di alcune questioni fondamentali, come l'identità in rete, il digital divide, la comunicazione politica e la nascita delle nuove industrie culturali nell'epoca del web 2.0.

Technology & Education: adaptation of TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) model in the LMS (Learning Management System) adopted

Abstract: The LMS seems the most favourable solution for the application of different but complementary types of knowledge useful for technology-based instruction. To test this assumption, the TPACK model (http://www.tpack.org) was applied to the LMS adopted by CIHEAM – Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB) after a tenyear experience of E-Learning focused on the “collaborative” approach. Based on the experience carried out by MAIB, it results that the selected LMS (Claroline) is compatible with the philosophy expressed in the TPACK model, as it is equipped with appropriate tools to meet the teacher's needs in the application of the pedagogical knowledge (PK), content knowledge (CK) and technological knowledge (TK).

Moreover, in this article, the above knowledge is identified and localized in the selected platform to understand whether and how is the TPACK model suitable for this particular environment. keywords: Collaborative approach; eLearning environment; Learning Management System; Technology-based instruction; TPACK model.

Nel contributo si illustrano i vantaggi dell'impiego della piattaforma Claroline – un LMS specificamente progettato per agevolare la collaborazione online delle comunità di apprendimento – come ideale strumento di applicazione del modello TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) al sistema e-learning dell'Istituto Agronomico Mediterraneo di Bari (IAMB-CIHEAM). Infatti, dagli studi e dalle verifiche sperimentali effettuate presso l'Istituto – che vanta una decennale esperienza nel campo dell'e-learning ispirato ad un approccio costruttivistico e collaborativo – risulta che tale ambiente di apprendimento soddisfa appieno tutte le principali esigenze metodologiche, multilinguistiche e di sostenibilità; e consente non soltanto di salvaguardare le caratteristiche del modello TPACK, ma pure di sfruttare al meglio l'intera gamma delle sue potenzialità. La cornice teorica di riferimento TPACK, valorizzando l'eterogeneità e la miscela di saperi, competenze e abilità, è contraddistinta dalla simmetria fra le sue tre maggiori componenti, che s'intersecano scambievolmente in un equilibrio dinamico, frutto di continue negoziazioni e della ridefinizione incessante delle relazioni reciproche: l'area delle conoscenze relative ai contenuti (CK), l'area delle conoscenze pedagogiche (PK) e quella delle conoscenze tecnologiche (TK). Per conoscenze relative ai contenuti s'intende la conoscenza dello specifico argomento, che deve essere trasmessa con la mediazione didattica, vale a dire insegnata e appresa. Le conoscenze pedagogiche indicano invece la profonda conoscenza delle pratiche e dei metodi d'insegnamento, che permette di pianificare programmi basati su obiettivi prefissati (il vero e proprio insegnamento).

Le conoscenze tecnologiche rendono inoltre possibile l'utilizzo efficace di tutte le tecnologie comunicative, le quali, eliminando i vincoli spaziali e temporali, garantiscono la perfetta armonizzazione fra la dimensione tecnologica e quella dell'istruzione/formazione. In questa prospettiva, è proprio l'intrecciarsi delle conoscenze a generare ulteriori, differenti conoscenze. La piattaforma Claroline ha dimostrato – attraverso i test cui è stata sottoposta allo IAMB – di sostenere validamente la creazione di comunità di lavoro virtuali (gruppi o corsi), pur mantenendo il singolo discente al centro del progetto educativo, come protagonista attivo ed indiscusso della costruzione del suo personale apprendimento. Nella sua flessibilità, è in grado di facilitare e promuovere il lifelong learning e consente di identificare e implementare le soluzioni più favorevoli per quel che riguarda la facilità d'uso, il rapporto costi-benefici e l'apertura alle lingue e ai linguaggi. È infine caratterizzata da un basso “digital divide”, in modo da scongiurare il rischio che la tecnologia, anziché costituire un fattore abilitante, si trasformi in un'insuperabile barriera cognitiva.

Peer learning (PL) and Adult Education (AE) in a distance course for e-tutors: the experience of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (MAIB) / Luigi Sisto and Onofrio Lorusso.

This article describes a spontaneous Peer learning process in the context of an e-learning follow-up course for e-tutors, addressed to former trainees of the MAIB Master of Science program, members of the institutional Alumni Network. The collaborativeconstructivist method applied in a context of adult participants creates favorable conditions for setting up a community of practice that shares common interests and stimulates the members concerned to interact in a constructive and open-minded approach, while still recognizing the essential role of the teacher and/or tutor in the learning process. The process came up within Discussion Fora of the course delivered on MAIB e-learning platform where significant contributions have introduced additional information to the course contents. The careful examination of all contributions and the analysis based on appropriate criteria has enabled recognizing the so-called Episode or value-added posts. It may be deduced that the occurrence of complete cycles of different types of Episode posts in different modules of the course can prove the actual implementation of Peer Learning. Social awareness is a key-component of e-learning, inducing participants to an increasingly important interaction in collaborative learning. Actually, the above awareness, developed in a welldisposed learning group, often produces very interesting exchanges of knowledge and personal experiences between the members of a peer-to-peer study group. This social dimension conveys information more effectively, by strengthening both individual and collective learning. Then it will be necessary to complete the knowledge management process using techniques and tools to support peer assessment.

Africa is one of the regions in the world most affected by food price volatilities and production variability. Spiking and volatile food prices have created uncertainty and risks for producers, traders and processors, resulting in increased food insecurity for consumers. At the root of the food price and production variability are hydrometeorological disasters which comprise cyclones, floods, landslides, wild fires and dry spells. Droughts affect the largest number of people on the continent, followed by floods and storms. Geological disasters, such as earthquakes and volcanoes, are relatively less frequent and impact fewer countries. A review of best practices and country experiences has demonstrated that there is no agricultural transformation without risk management. Mapping the various risks faced by farmers, value chain operators, and the households' access to food is fundamental. Governments need to support appropriate risk-hedging instruments and engage in capacity development to increase the effectiveness of the different measures applied. It should, however, be noted that risk management strategies are context specific and vary from one region to another.

The FAO international symposium on “The role of agricultural biotechnologies in sustainable food systems and nutrition” took place from 15 to 17 February 2016 at FAO headquarters, Rome. Over 400 people attended, including 230 delegates from 75 member countries and the European Union, as well as representatives of intergovernmental organizations, private sector entities, civil society organizations, academia/research organizations and producer organizations/cooperatives. The symposium encompassed the crop, livestock, forestry and fishery sectors and was organized around three main themes: i) climate change; ii) sustainable food systems and nutrition; and iii) people, policies, institutions and communities. The proceedings provide the main highlights of the symposium which covered a broad range of biotechnologies, from low-tech approaches such as those involving use of microbial fermentation processes, biofertilizers, biopesticides and artificial insemination, to high-tech approaches such as those involving advanced DNA-based methodologies and genetically modified organisms.

One of the challenges to data collection to inform food safety decision making and montor the implementation and efficacy of control measures to manage specifc food safety is the availability of the appropriate methodology. The development of methods for the isolation and identific of pathogenic Vibrio spp. in seafoods is evlolving quickly.

This often means that methods become more sensitive and efficient but the cost may also increase. However the pace of development also means that there is not always adequate time to to comprehensively validate a method for a particular purpose. Agriculture and social protection are fundamentally linked in the context of rural livelihoods in Africa. Poor and food-insecure families depend primarily on agriculture and partly on non-farm income and private transfers for their livelihoods, and are the main target of social protection interventions (FAO, 2015). When embedded within a broader rural development framework, stronger coherence between agriculture and social protection interventions can assist in improving the welfare of poor small family farms by facilitating productive inclusion, improving risk-management capacities, and increasing agricultural productivity - all of which enable rural-based families to gradually move out of poverty and hunger (Tirivayi et al., 2013). An important step in strengthening coherence is to assess the existing state of coherence within a given country and identify potential entry points for strengthening it. In relation to this, this Diagnostic Tool can assist you in: identifying and mapping the scope and nature of linkages between agriculture and social protection interventions in their countries, including supportive and constraining factors; and understanding people's experiences and perceptions of linkages between agricultural and social protection programmes and how these linkages (or lack of them) affect their livelihoods. This will provide a basis for identifying options for strengthening coherence, which will inevitably depending on specific country contexts.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its Investment Centre (IC) Division, is assisting the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in its goal to improve the impact of future EBRD agribusiness investments regarding water efficiency. To this end, in 2013, a joint FAO/EBRD project entitled “Water along the food chain” was initiated in four pilot countries - Ukraine, Turkey, Jordan and Kyrgyz Republic. The specific objectives of this project are fourfold: (i) conduct selected analyses of water efficiency along the food chain to inform EBRD's agribusiness investment decisions; (ii) identify potential agribusiness clients for the bank and areas for further policy dialogue to improve water efficiency; (iii) improve agricultural water-use policy-making processes at the country level in the four abovementioned pilot countries through the involvement of private sector players; and (iv) coordinate the bank's future interventions regarding water efficiency along the food value chain with those of other international financial institutions (IFIs) operating in the transition region. The main objective of this report is to indicate ways for Ukraine to move towards more water efficient and productive solutions.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains the world's most food-insecure region characterized by high levels of child mortality and poverty and low levels of human and physical capital (FAO, 2009). Countries in SSA, including Tanzania, heavily depend on a smallholder-based agricultural sector, which makes their welfare and food security particularly vulnerable to climate change (Barrios et al., 2008). The goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of weather risk on rural households' welfare in Tanzania using nationally representative household panel data together with a set of novel weather variation indicators based on interpolated gridded and re-analysis weather data that capture the peculiar features of short term and long term variations in rainfall and temperature. In particular, we estimate the impact of weather shocks on a rich set of welfare indicators (including total income, total expenditure, food expenditure and its share in total expenditure and calorie intake) and investigate whether and how they vary by different definitions of shocks - capturing changes in levels and variations over different time periods. We find that both rainfall and maximum temperature variability exert a negative impact on welfare (i.e. no consumption smoothing) and that households that have adopted SLM practices are able to achieve income-smoothing. We also find that the most vulnerable rural households are much more affected by a rainfall deficit compared to the households in the top income quantile. Results underline the key role extension services play in enhancing adaptive capacity to reduce vulnerability to adverse weather conditions, as well as the importance of targeting the most vulnerable households in policy interventions to improve food security in the face of weather shocks.

The El Niño phenomenon poses a global threat to the agricultural livelihoods of millions of people. In Southern Africa, over 39 million people are now food insecure due to the impacts of El Niño, which have been felt across all sectors - food and nutrition security, agriculture (both crops and livestock), water and sanitation, energy, health and education. The poor 2015/16 agricultural season, compounded by last year's poor harvest that left only two countries with surplus food to export, has greatly affected the food and nutrition security of millions of people. The lean season is expected to continue through April 2017, which will have a cumulative eroding effect on the production capacities of farmers in the 2016/17 agricultural season. With 70 percent of the population in the region depending on agriculture for their livelihood, these same people not only produce food for themselves, but for the entire subregion. Supporting these farmers will be crucial to avoiding protracted relief operations and increased vulnerability, which can lead to migration as income and labour opportunities cease to exist.

Tea is the most used beverage second to water in the world. Presently, the climate change triggered by global warming is posing a major threat to the resilience of agricultural systems including tea cultivation. Increasing temperatures, changes to rainfall amount and distribution, coupled with major shifts in other meteorological parameters in comparison with long term observations have further complicated the production process. This compilation of adaptation strategies for tea cultivation developed and practiced by major tea growing countries of the world, is the first step taken by the working group on climate change of the FAO-IGG on tea to minimize climate change impacts on tea plantations. It is a joint effort by the scientists of Tea Research Institute of India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and China supported by the FAO-IGG on tea in Rome. It describes mathematical tools that can be used at different stages of suppression/eradication programmes. It provides simple methods for calculating the various quantities of sterile insects required so that more realistic sterile: fertile rates to suppress pest populations can be achieved. On the other hand, most SIT programmes have information systems based on GIS that produces reliable profiles of historic information. Based on the results of past activities they describe what has happened in the last weeks but barely explain what is expected in the following weeks. With the help of this guideline current AW-IPM progammes can use that historic information to develop predictive models for their particular conditions to better plan control measures.

Rural Advisory Services (RAS) are increasingly recognised as critical to agricultural and rural development. This article presents findings on the local economy impacts of seven African country SCT programmes evaluated as part of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) “From Protection to Production” (PtoP) project. The countries are Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The PtoP project has facilitated expansion of the evaluations of SCT programmes to include productive and local-economy impacts. Local economy-wide impact evaluation (or LEWIE) employs simulation methods to reveal the full impact of cash transfers on local economies, including spillovers they create to nonbeneficiaries. It does this by linking agricultural household models together into a general-equilibrium model of the local economy, in most cases a treated village or village cluster. Our LEWIE analysis finds evidence of significant spillovers, resulting in SCT income multipliers that are considerably greater than one in most cases. Most spillovers accrue to non-beneficiary households. Integration with outside markets shifts impacts out of local economies, reducing local income multipliers. Local supply constraints may result in price inflation which creates a divergence of real from nominal income multipliers for beneficiaries as well as non-beneficiaries. The existence of income spillovers reveals that SCT programmes have local economy impacts beyond the treated households, which could yield large benefits for rural developments.

This report uses data from a two-year impact evaluation to analyse the impact of the Ethiopia Social Cash Transfer Pilot Programme (SCTPP) on household behaviour and decision-making, including agricultural production and other income-generating activities, labour supply, the accumulation of productive assets, access to credit and food security. The general framework for empirical analysis is based on a comparison of programme beneficiaries with a group of controls interviewed in 2012 and again two years later, using difference-in-difference (or double difference) estimators combined with propensity score matching methods. The findings show that the programme significantly increased household food security and decreased the number of hours children spend on household chores and activities. The programme is also associated with increases in social capital, and subjective well-being. However, the effects of the SCTPP on the accumulation of productive assets and on agricultural production are mixed. The analysis reveals important heterogeneity in programme impacts, with estimated magnitudes varying over geographical area and over gender of the household head.

This study provides an initial indicator-based framework for understanding the economic, social and nutritional contributions of inland capture fisheries and aquaculture and their links to available water resources. Fourteen indicators covering environmental, economic, social and nutritional dimensions of inland fisheries and aquaculture are identified and tested in eighteen African and Asian countries with significant inland fish production.

Complexities in defining and estimating the indicators are discussed, and initial results based on currently available data are presented to identify gaps and future steps to improve knowledge. The study discusses the potential use of these indicators as a baseline for national sectoral planning and management as a means to inform intersectoral water management and, in the face of climate change and changing water availability, as inputs into modelling the potential economic, social and nutritional losses and opportunities to society stemming through impacts in the inland fisheries sector.

This report identifies and analyses gaps and inconsistencies in the current fish traceability standards and regulations. As a first step in reaching this goal, the key terms in understanding the concept of traceability were explained and this concept was described in connection with related notion. The second step consisted in performing a comprehensive literature review on which the gap analysis of the traceability standards and regulations was built on. The last step in this study was performing a content analysis of selected international standards and guidelines, regulatory standards, and industry and NGO non-regulatory standards. By employing this multi-method analysis several awareness, commitment, implementation, technology and standards gaps were identified and described. In addition, specific interand intra-institutions inconsistencies were highlighted. Finally, recommendations for governments and stakeholders along the value chain were discussed.

The Panel was convened in response to the agreement by the twenty-fifth session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) on the terms of reference for an expert advisory panel for assessment of proposals to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and to the endorsement of the twenty-sixth session of COFI to convene the Panel for relevant proposals to future CITES Conference of the Parties.

This first issue of The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries is a comprehensive review of the status and trends of fisheries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. It includes eight chapters, separated in two parts: a first part on the status and trends of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries under different aspects such as fleet, catches, socio-economic variables, bycatch, small-scale fisheries and stock status, and a second part describing management measures adopted by the GFCM towards the sustainability of fisheries in its area of application. The report is based to a large extent on the most up-to-date data available submitted by GFCM contracting and cooperating non-contracting parties, including information on stock status, national catches, fleet and socio-economic information up to 2014. It is also complemented with information from other sources, including literature review and, for small-scale fisheries, the outcomes of the First Regional Symposium on Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, organized in 2013 in Malta.

The National Gender Profile of Agricultural and Rural Livelihoods is part of the project GCP/SEC/008/TUR, which contributes to the Regional Initiative 1 for the REU Region and to the SO3 by improving knowledge for evidence-based policies. The purpose of the National Gender Profile of Agricultural and Rural Livelihoods for the Kyrgyz Republic is to contribute to the production of knowledge for better informed, targeted and gender sensitive actions in agriculture and rural development. It is meant to inform FAO professionals, other UN agencies, staff from the government of Kyrgyzstan, NGOs and professionals who work in agriculture and rural development in Kyrgyzstan. It is also meant to be an awareness-raising tool for the wider public. This national profile points out some of the major gender inequalities that need to be considered by policy makers and project managers according to available data, and identifies further research needs.

The book includes information on 270 species of vascular plants observed during our surveys conducted in more than 50 islands in Maldives. It deals with the common native as well as all alien plants which are currently occuring in the Islands. Information provided includes the current valid name of the plant, most popular synonyms, names in Dhivehi and a few common English names. Plant descriptions given include data on vegetative characters avoiding confusing scientific terms, as far as possible. Data collected from the field are the source of information on the occurrence and pattern of distribution in different islands. Threats and damages caused by invasive alien species are also included.

Ethnobotanical information collected during the study is given under uses. However, use of any plant/plant parts for medicinal purposes, based on the information provided in this book, cannot be recommended for want of evidence on the non-toxicity of the plant/ plant parts. So, the readers of the book are advised to refrain from use of the plant/ plant parts for medicinal purposes. It is hoped that this book will be used as a field guide for identification of native, nonnative and invasive plants of Maldives by specialists and non-specialists alike.
