The inclusion of libraries and access to information in national and regional development plans will contribute to meeting the global United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In support of this goal, IFLA has published a booklet of examples and recommendations for policymakers demonstrating the contribution of libraries to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There is also a supporting two-page handout.

The booklet includes stories from all types of libraries in many countries around the world. IFLA thanks all IFLA members and partners that contributed their stories for the booklet. Additional stories will be made available online, and you can re-print the booklet and handout at any time. Many Library and Information Science institutions, associations, and professionals have long established privacy as a pillar of the profession's ethical codes, but as the nature of the creation and dissemination of information, as well as its content, has changed in recent decades, so too have the questions institutions, associations, and professionals face about how to define and uphold privacy.

IFLA Journal invites papers for a special issue focused on privacy, libraries, and information professions across all continents. The issue will be published in the summer of 2018 as Volume 44:2. IFLA Seeks Global Vision for Libraries Two-day workshop kicks off worldwide effort

By Larra Clark | April 13, 2017 Librarians from around the world gathered in Athens, Greece, April 4–5 to kickstart a global vision for libraries. The meeting was part of a series convened by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) that continues with regional workshops in May and June. The twoday Global Vision Workshop followed the IFLA President's Meeting, which featured diverse speakers who outlined societal, global, and technological trends.

“Today we begin a very important journey,” said IFLA President Donna Scheeder, stating that the issues facing libraries today require “individual commitment to a collective and joint response to achieve a common

IFLA President Donna Scheeder (Photo: Evgeni Hristov) The opening speaker for the President's Meeting, Dave Snowden, founder and chief scientific officer at Cognitive Edge, set the tone for the meeting by asserting that “until you change the way people think about past and present, there is no future.” He offered examples of how to create this change via citizen ethnography and research about the making of meaning. He also cautioned attendees about the limits of pattern recognition, the dangers of overspecialization, and deterministic goal-setting. “If you have specific targets, you miss opportunities along the way. We have become more focused on measurement than what is measured,” he said.

Snowden advocated small-scale and energy-efficient experiments to best prepare for change. “Evolution is about luck, not the fittest. Cultivating the ability to see the inconsequential is key to innovation, and librarians are the custodians of the inconsequential,” he said in advocating for managed serendipity and the ability to cultivate skills to recombine and repurpose in novel ways.

While Snowden argued that we've never lived in a factbased society, “fake news” and its internet-based proliferation was a topic throughout the sessions.

Futurist and science fiction author Karl Schroeder framed this theme as the “antilibrary.” The antilibrary i s c h a r a c t e r i z e d b y s p e e d , e f f i c i e n c y, dematerialization, and equality—meaning all information is treated the same, and there is no way to establish authenticity or authority. “The cancer of information is that it contains no knowledge,” Schroeder said. Another, perhaps predictable, thread throughout the conversations was the importance of materiality—including physical collections, buildings, and people—in an increasingly digital world. Schroeder also discussed how libraries might localize global concerns and serve as portals for contextualizing and sharing global knowledge within a local context.

They have commercially valuable properties and biological characteristics (resi-stance to powdery mildew, large-fruited, the ability of transmitting the trait of red leaves with constant result to progeny seed, etc.). The aim of our researches was to study the main indicators of photoactivity of leaf apparatus of nectarine with green and anthocyanin leaves coloration. Investigations have been carried out in 2010-2015 on intact leaf plates for three cultivars and forms of nectarine with green leaves – Rubinoviy-8 (control), Chemus, Krymtsuht 53-85 and 2 forms with anthocyanin coloration of leaf plate (NektadianaKrasnolistnaya 996-88, Krasnola 495-86). In experiment birdsfoot trefoil cultivars Zora, K-37 and Rocco, and two strains of Mesorhizobium loti were used. A trial was carried out in spring 2012 on a private estate in the village of Ivanovci near Ljig (Serbia) and were set up on brown forest soil type, using a randomized block design with three replications and plot size of 5 m2 (5x1m). For the expansion of ideas about the chaenomeles content nutritional value of 7 essential macro- and microelements in the flowers and fruit of 8 cultivars from the Nikita Botanical Gardens collection have been studied. Actually, no policies, laws, strategies and action plans have been implemented to reduce FLW in Algeria. This exploratory study aims to evaluate household FW in Algeria. An online survey with 323 Algerian households was conducted in February-April 2015 to assess the knowledge and relative importance of FW; attitudes towards FW; impacts of behaviors regarding food and food management; FW quantity and value; as well as barriers and willingness to behavioral change.

Sample is gender-balanced (54% female and 46% male) and rather young (93% are less than 44 years old) while most of respondents have high education level. The aim of the research was to identify new methods to increase milk production in sheep. An evaluation of milk production at Ţigaie local breed, in comparison with half-breed females from crossbreeding of local breed sheep with Awassi rams (Aw x Ti) and with Lacaune (La x Ti) was conducted. Estimation of milk production was done according to given by International Committee for Animal Recording (AT method) and statistical analysis was performed using the Restricted Maximum Likelihood method. Mean milk production in Aw x Tiewes was 29,28% higher than in local breed Ţigaie, and 32.20% higher than in La x Ti ewes. Differences of milk yield found in three groups of animals were very significant (p<0.001).

Prima di scrivere “Come lacrime nella pioggia” ho raccolto numerose testimonianze e ho svolto altrettante ricerche, sia per lo stile di vita in India incluso Kailashpur - sia per le leggi che vigono nel Paese. La storia di Asha non è un frutto della mia immaginazione, è arricchita dalla mia immaginazione, ma Asha è la voce di tutte quelle ragazze e donne che, ancora oggi, lottano per la loro indipendenza, per la felicità, per i sogni. Per la libertà. Nonostante alcune donne in India stiano conquistando nuovi spazi nella vita economica, sociale e culturale del Paese, ci sono ancora troppe donne nascoste che non hanno una voce.

Una donna in India vale meno di niente, e ho letto testimonianze di ragazze che, ascoltando promesse che non saranno mai mantenute, lasciano i loro villaggi alla ricerca di una vita migliore, per poi ritrovarsi tra le mani di uomini che si definiscono i loro padroni, che le rapiscono, le comprano, le picchiano, le violentano. Se loro provano a fuggire, il più delle volte vengono uccise. Numerose associazioni in tutto il mondo cercano di aiutare queste donne, di dare una voce alle vittime dell'India, ed è quello che voglio fare anch'io con il mio romanzo. In molti conosciamo gli ultimi casi di stupro in India, che coinvolgono donne, ragazze, e addirittura bambine che vedono perdere la loro innocenza per colpa di troppi uomini. In molti, inoltre, ricordiamo le immagini di tutte quelle ragazze indiane, con i cartelli ben alzati, che durante numerose manifestazioni gridano per le strade la loro voglia di giustizia, di dire basta. Se una donna indiana si avvicina alla polizia per chiedere aiuto, non riceve nessun sostegno. Perché una donna in India non vale niente e le sue parole non hanno importanza. La polizia indiana è corrotta, e spesso anche persone come Sarah, che lottano continuamente per la giustizia in India, andando contro il governo, sono in pericolo: vengono incarcerate, uccise, oppure spariscono nel nulla. Siamo nel 2017 ed è inaccettabile pensare che queste ingiustizie siano all'ordine del giorno. Ragazze rapite, violentate, drogate, uccise, costrette a sposarsi con uomini che non amano, costrette ad abbandonare gli studi, a vivere come schiave… Penso che, nel nostro piccolo, ognuno possa fare qualcosa. Parliamo di questa verità, raccontiamola, affinché presto in India tutte le donne non debbano più temere di uscire dalle loro case, di ridere, di seguire la moda, di sognare. Di vivere.

Nel 2014 ho fondato l'Associazione di volontariato Un ponte per Anne Frank, e proprio partendo dagli errori del passato lavoriamo sui diritti umani oggi, sull'importanza di essere cittadini e responsabili e ci dedichiamo a quei bambini che - in Italia e all'estero, incluso in India - vivono situazioni di disagio.

Evolvo Libri nasce dalla mia passione per la lettura ed è la realizzazione di un sogno cresciuto col tempo nella mia mente. In termini di spazio è una piccola libreria, non a caso ho volutamente creato un ambiente accogliente allo scopo di mettere a proprio agio chi entra, in modo che possa prendersi il tempo che vuole nella scelta del libro, confrontandosi con me. È una piccola libreria alla quale però non manca nulla.

In questi anni sono cresciuta sia a livello professionale sia personale. All'inizio ero intimidita da questo ruolo, in quanto proveniente da tutt'altra realtà (lavoravo in Bialetti, l'azienda produttrice della Moka, ero segretaria di direzione), ma col tempo ho imparato a destreggiarmi, comprendendo come rapportarmi con le persone, cercando di soddisfare le loro esigenze, ricercando anche i libri fuori catalogo o quelli che chiamo 'missioni impossibili'.E oggi mi sento finalmente una libraia, un termine che prima ho sempre avuto pudore a usare, perché nasco e sono prima di tutto lettrice. Il senso più grande di questo mestiere lo trovo quando mi metto in ascolto dei miei clienti e cerco di capire ciò che desiderano e le soddisfazioni più grandi arrivano quando tornano e mi dicono che il romanzo consigliato era giusto per loro.

Un approccio relazionale che lambisce la confidenza e a volte diventa una relazione di ricerca insieme. Anche per questo un anno fa ho sentito l'esigenza di tornare a studiare e ho preso un Master in Book-Coaching (o Libro Terapia) alla Scuola Accademia della Felicità di Milano: credo nella lettura come cura per la mente, il corpo e soprattutto per la nostra anima. Nella piccola Evolvo Libri trovo posto per tante cose: faccio incontri con gli autori, edito piccoli progetti locali e promuovo meravigliose letture animate per bambini, anche con progetti scolastici, come quello che partirà in aprile con la scuola primaria. Si chiama “Passione Libro”, si svolgerà qui in libreria, dove leggerò albi illustrati per avvicinare i bimbi alla lettura.Credo molto nei libri con le illustrazioni, che accendono l'immaginazione insieme alla scrittura e che, essendo non lunghi, i bambini hanno l'obiettivo breve di finire. Sono presente anche sui temi del benessere con una serie di eventi che chiamo “Evolvo Libri alla ricerca della felicità”, ovvero incontri con professionisti di varie discipline: dalla formatrice di pensiero positivo, alla nutrizionista, alla psicologa, all'astrologa e altri ancora. Sono convinta che l'essere umano non smette mai di apprendere e credo che la creatività sia alla base della nostra vita. Per questo vedo la libreria indipendente come un punto di incontro tra persone che condividono la passione per il libro, la curiosità per i vari argomenti, la gioia di apprendere e di evolvere, quella che forse si chiama fame di conoscenza.

Abstract: Twenty years after the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, and at a time when the global community is defining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the post-2015 era, the international consensus on the need to achieve gender equality seems stronger than ever before.1 Empowering women and girls is among the goals aspired to by all, from grassroots organizations, trade unions and corporations to Member States and intergovernmental bodies. But how far has this consensus been translated into tangible progress on the ground, and what more is needed to bridge the gaps between rhetoric and reality? Drawing on promising experiences from around the world, this Report proposes a comprehensive agenda for key policy actors-including gender equality advocates, national governments and international agenzie-to make human rights a lived reality for all women and girls. Governments in every region have made legally binding commitments to respect, protect and fulfil women's human rights, recognizing their intrinsic value as well as the synergies between women's rights and wider prosperity.

Women's access to decent employment is not only likely to improve their agency and the distributional dynamics within the household but can also lift whole households out of poverty. Improvements in their health and education are key contributors to women's own well-being and life chances and are also linked to better outcomes for their children. In the long term, societies and economies can only thrive if they make full use of women's skills and capacities. There have been significant achievements since Beijing: more girls are enrolling in school; and more women are working, getting elected and assuming leadership positions. Where once it was regarded as a private matter, preventing and redressing violence against women and girls is at last on the public policy agenda. Women have gained greater legal rights to access employment, own and inherit property and get married and divorced on the same terms as men. These areas of progress show that gender inequalities can be reduced through public action. However, while hugely important, these changes have not yet resulted in equal outcomes for women and men. Globally, three quarters of working age men are in the labour force compared to half of working age women. Among those who are employed, women constitute nearly two thirds of 'contributing family workers', who work in family businesses without any direct pay. Everywhere, women continue to be denied equal pay for work of equal value and are less likely than men to receive a pension, which translates into large income inequalities throughout their lives. Globally, women's earnings are 24 per cent less than men's, and even in countries such as Germany-where policies are increasingly supportive of female employment- women on average earn just half as much income as men over their lifetimes. Yet, in all regions women work more than men: they do almost two and a half times as much unpaid care and domestic work as men, and if paid and unpaid work are combined, women in almost all countries work longer hours than men each day. This Report focuses on the economic and social dimensions of gender equality, including the right of all women to a good job, with fair pay and safe working conditions, to an adequate pension in older age, to health care and to safe water, without discrimination based on factors such as socioeconomic status, geographic location and race or ethnicity.

In doing so, it aims to unravel some of the challenges and contradictions facing the world today: at a time when women and girls have almost equal opportunities when it comes to education, why are only half of women of working age in the labour force globally, and why do women still earn much less than men? In an era of unprecedented global wealth, why are large numbers of women not able to exercise their right to even basic levels of health care, water and sanitation? As the Report shows, these inequalities are not inevitable. Economic and social policies can contribute to the creation of stronger economies, and to more sustainable and more gender-equal societies, if they are designed and implemented with women's rights at their centre.

Title: Shaping the international agenda: Raising women's voices in intergovernmental forums Abstract: This publication aims to build knowledge on women's participation in national delegations to meetings of international organizations' governing bodies and their leadership roles in these meetings. It is based on responses to a questionnaire addressed to members of the United Nations Governing Bodies Secretariat and of the International Gender Champions–Geneva.

Although the results of the survey may not be representative of all United Nations organizations, they have yielded important information on the current policies and practices in the 23 entities that took part. Based on the responses, six types of actions to improve women's participation in governing body meetings have been identified: (a) explicit policies and mandated targets; (b) tracking and reporting; (c) training and capacity-building; (d) financial support; (e) advocacy and networking; and (f) communications strategies. The survey results are complemented by an overview of intergovernmental and inter-agency frameworks and trends in women's participation in national Governments and intergovernmental forums. Best practices in promoting women's participation at different levels – national and multilateral – are also presented with the aim of informing concrete recommendations on the way forward to realize gender balance in international organizations' governing bodies. As the first publication of its kind, it is intended to be a handy source of information and advocacy tool that can empower a wide range of gender-equality advocates to champion gender equality, women's empowerment and gender balance in their work and across their networks.

Abstract: In 2019, the ILO will celebrate its Centenary. Specialized in the world of work, the ILO's primary goals are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen social dialogue on work-related issues. Gender equality in the world of work is at the heart of this mandate. And women's full and effective participation in the workforce – and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life – is key. Against the backdrop of the significant progress women have made in the world of work, there is much yet to accomplish.

While women account for half of the world population, they remain underrepresented. Barely half of women worldwide are working in paid jobs, compared with about four in five men.

Globally, a gap of 26 percentage points separates women and men in labour force participation, but the divides are much wider in certain parts of the world. Further, women continue to carry the lion's share of family and caregiving responsibilities. While these duties prevent some from joining the labour force, they also leave many women in the labour force struggling to find a balance between unpaid care and paid work. Going forward, the ILO aims to bring new perspectives that can guide actions to make the world of work a more gender-equitable place. To inform this initiative, the ILO selected Gallup as its partner to obtain sound data on global attitudes and perceptions regarding women and work from both women and men. Having a complete picture requires balancing both objective data and subjective perceptions and attitudes. This is especially true in regard to gender equality and women's empowerment in the world of work. Over the decades, the benefits that women's economic empowerment brings to individuals, families and societies as a whole have become clear, and yet gender equality has not been achieved anywhere. While most of the research focus so far has been on the tangible factors influencing gender equality at work, probing the intangible factors also has value. The ILO added questions to the Gallup World Poll to foster a better understanding of how women and men feel and think about women and work. For governments and employers' and workers' organizations, a deeper appreciation of people's insights can lead to improved formulating or revisiting regulations and policies that, in turn, could contribute to charting a better future for women at work. This report, “Towards a better future for women and work: Voices of women and men,” details the results of this global research project based on data collected through the Gallup World Poll. It provides a first-ever account of how women and men worldwide think and feel about women and work.2 The findings in this report are based on interviews conducted in 2016 with nearly 149,000 adults in 142 countries and territories3 regarding their attitudes about women and the world of work.

Title: Gender mainstreaming activities at the Council of Europe

Abstract: Born from the need for a new approach to policy-making that takes into account both women's and men's interests and concerns, in order to design better policies, the concept of gender mainstreaming was first introduced at the 1985 United Nations World Conference on Women in Nairobi. It was consequently introduced as a strategy in international gender equality policy through the Beijing Platform for Action adopted at the 1995 Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing. The Council of Europe was instrumental in developing the concept of gender mainstreaming from the 1990's onwards, including through the establishment of a Group of Specialists on Mainstreaming in 1995, which prepared a conceptual framework and a methodology for mainstreaming the gender equality perspective in an effective and visible way (1998). This work led to the adoption of the definition of gender mainstreaming used within the Council of Europe and by many other organisations and countries: “Gender mainstreaming is the (re)organisation, improvement, development and evaluation of policy processes, so that a gender equality perspective is incorporated in all policies at all levels at all stages, by the actors involved in policy making.” In 1998, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe also adopted a Recommendation on Gender mainstreaming. Since then, the gender mainstreaming strategy has been an integral part of the work and activities of the Council of Europe to promote the full realisation of gender equality. This is part of the “dual approach” generally used in both national gender equality policies and in International organisations, which combines a) specific policies and actions for the advancement of women, including positive action, and b) gender mainstreaming.

During the sixth meeting of the GEC (19-21 November 2014), the Secretariat presented a Concept Note (GEC (2014)7) including an overview of existing glossaries. In the discussion that followed, GEC members instructed the Secretariat to prepare a more detailed document including relevant definitions from Council of Europe instruments and standards, providing sources and explanations for discussion at the GEC meeting in November 2015. Title: Poverty, gender and intersecting inequalities in the EU. Review of the implementation of Area A: Women and Poverty of the Beijing Platform for Action Abstract: Poverty in Europe today is more than just a lack of resources for survival. It also involves a loss of opportunities for meaningful participation in all areas of life, which can cause detachment and exclusion of such people from society. Despite increasing access to basic resources for majority of people, poverty and social exclusion in Europe has been on the rise.

It affects both women and men, and in particular groups of people, such as lone parents, young people, older women, people with disabilities, migrants and Roma. In an inclusive society, people's well-being and life chances should not be pre-determined by their background, such as gender, age or ethnicity. Nor should having children become a poverty risk. Ensuring equal opportunities is vital for people facing extra challenges, such as poor health or disability, so that they can achieve their full potential in life. The importance of equal economic independence for every single person cannot be underestimated. Our report shows that routes into and out of poverty or social exclusion differ for women and men. Due to existing gender inequalities in public and private life, women are continually at a higher risk of poverty across the EU. Gender roles, stereotypes and structural inequalities weaken women's opportunities in the labour market and devalue their work.

These obstacles mean that women, especially lone mothers, struggle between work and private life much more than men.

Almost every second lone mother across the EU is at risk of poverty or social exclusion. In general, women's economic independence shrinks with the arrival of each child. This is not only harming societies, families or mothers, but there is also a high risk that children will grow up in poverty and have poorer chances for education and success in their own future life.

Abstract: While the impact of new information technologies on all aspects of modern societies and human life has been very positive, new vulnerabilities of our societies have emerged through the growth of the Internet and social media. The No Hate Speech Movement campaign was set up to mobilise young people for human rights online and countering hate speech. In a survey carried out in 2015, women were one of the top three target groups of online hate speech encountered by the respondents. One thematic focus of the campaign is therefore sexist hate speech. Sexist hate speech is still too often seen as “acceptable”, while in fact it is one of the most widespread and systemic forms of hate. Women and girls receive threats and insults of a sexual character on a daily basis via emails, websites or social media, including threats of publishing personal photos and information. The aims are to humiliate and objectify women, to destroy their reputation and to make them vulnerable and fearful. Sexist hate speech has devastating effects, especially on young women, and affects society's quest to achieve gender equality. The Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy has the overall goal of achieving the advancement and empowering of women and the realisation of gender equality in member states. One of its five objectives is “combating gender stereotypes and sexism”, including “combating sexism as a form of hate speech and integrating this dimension into Council of Europe action aiming at combating hate speech and discrimination (...)”. This report provides information about the extension of the problem, examples of action and priorities for educational and political action to seriously address and stop sexist hate speech.

Families with a migrant background face additional challenges. Across the EU, migrants confront a higher risk of poverty and social exclusion than native populations. Migrants' involvement in society, the labour market, their experiences of discrimination and economic independence are not the same between women and men. With the migratory flows seen in Europe today, these matters require immediate attention. Europe must find smart ways to address these challenges and ensure that a gender perspective is maintained throughout the integration process. EIGE has a clear vision to make gender equality a reality for all women and men in the European Union and beyond. Gender equality benefits everyone in society, girls and boys, women and men, and is an important policy goal for the EU. As the European knowledge centre on gender equality, EIGE provides comparable data, robust evidence and sound expertise to support policymakers improve all our lives by bringing about a more gender equal Europe for everyone. This report is part of EIGE's mandate to monitor EU progress towards gender equality, specifically in relation to the objectives of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). I would like to thank all the institutions and experts who contributed to this publication and particularly acknowledge the Slovak Government, the European Commission Directorate-General for Justice, the High Level Group on Gender Mainstreaming, Eurostat, European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and EIGE's staff. In this series, we seek to uncover the structural foundations of sexism in the food system and highlight the ways people, communities, organizations, and social movements are dismantling the attitudes, institutions, and structures that hold patriarchy in place. To end hunger and malnutrition, we must end injustices in the food and agriculture system. Thus, dismantling sexism in the food system, in the food movement, in our organizations, and among ourselves is fundamental to transforming the food system and our society as a whole.

Food First invites contributions on this topic from authors engaged in research and community action to dismantle racism in the food system.

Abstract: Gender, Development, and Globalization is the leading primer on global feminist economics and development. Lourdes Benería, a pioneer in the field of feminist economics, is joined in this second edition by Gunseli Berik and Maria Floro to update the text to reflect the major theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions and global developments in the last decade. Title: Women, Gender, Remittances and Development in the Global South Abstract: This book endeavours to take the conceptualisation of the relationship between transnational remittance exchanges and gender to a new level. Title: Gender and Climate Change: Impacts, Science, Policy Abstract Does gender matter in global climate change? This timely and provocative book takes readers on a guided tour of basic climate science, then holds up a gender lens to find out what has been overlooked in popular discussion, research, and policy debates. We see that, around the world, more women than men die in climate-related natural disasters; the history of science and war are intimately interwoven masculine occupations and preoccupations; and conservative men and their interests drive the climate change denial machine. A study from the European Institute for Gender Equality on the 'economic benefits of gender equality' puts forth robust new evidence, showing the positive impacts of reducing gender inequalities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, labour market activity and wages. It also shows that addressing different aspects of gender inequality together as a whole is likely to have more positive impacts, rather than tackling each aspect of gender inequality one by one as gender equality in one domain has spill-over effects in other domains.

Title: WeWorld Index 2017 Abstract: Il WeWorld Index è un INDICE SINTETICO composto da 34 INDICATORI raggruppabili in 17 DIMENSIONI (2 indicatori per dimensione). Ogni dimensione fa riferimento ad un aspetto della vita considerato determinante per l'inclusione di bambine/i, adolescenti e donne.

Poiché, come spiegato in precedenza, l'inclusione è un concetto multidimensionale che non riguarda solo la sfera economica, le dimensioni considerate sono varie e sono state raggruppate in 3 CATEGORIE: 1. CONTESTO, riguardante l'ambito più generale in cui sia donne che bambine/i e adolescenti vivono: 7 dimensioni, 14 indicatori 2. BAMBINE/I e ADOLESCENTI, 5 dimensioni, 10 indicatori 3.

DONNE, 5 dimensioni, 10 indicatori Gli indicatori presenti nelle 17 dimensioni derivano da fonti accreditate a livello internazionale, come l'Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (WHO), l'Unesco, la World Bank, UNICEF, UNDP etc. Altri sono a loro volta indici sintetici largamente conosciuti e utilizzati, come il Gender Gap Index o il Global Peace Index. Gli indicatori sono stati scelti sulla base di alcune considerazioni: la rilevanza dell'indicatore rispetto al tema dell'inclusione di donne, bambine/i e adolescenti, cioè la sua capacità di riferirsi in modo coerente e pertinente; la possibilità di avere dati il più possibile completi, disponibili per la maggior parte dei paesi del mondo e che tali dati siano aggiornati e raccolti con cadenza regolare, in modo da poterli confrontare nel tempo; l'accuratezza delle fonti, cioè la loro credibilità nel rilevare i dati; infine la loro accessibilità, cioè la facilità di accesso ad essi3. L'Index non ha la pretesa di essere un prodotto accademico, ma si rivolge sia al lettore curioso di informarsi sia a chi cerca spunti per orientarsi ed agire. Il rapporto si propone in un delicato equilibrio di teoria e pratica, analisi critica e rassegna, parziale, di buone pratiche, sguardo lontano e ampio, attenzione ai particolari, ai problemi di casa nostra. Il WeWorld Index è stato costruito attraverso il metodo della standardizzazione con lo z-score. Questa procedura permette di liberare gli indicatori della loro unità di misura e di renderli omogenei, quindi “raggruppabili” in un indice sintetico. Inoltre ha il vantaggio, rispetto ad altri metodi, di mostrare quanto i paesi sono distanti tra loro per un determinato indicatore e nell'indice sintetico.

Title: Marine litter assessment in the Adriatic & Ionian seas : 2017 Abstract: Marine litter -any persistent, manufactured or processed solid material discarded, disposed of or abandoned in the marine and coastal environment- is globally acknowledged as a major societal challenge of our times due to its significant environmental, economic, social, political and cultural implications. Marine litter related information in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas and furthermore in the Mediterranean, remains limited, inconsistent and fragmented, although it is widely accepted that the Mediterranean is one of the most affected seas by marine litter, worldwide. Effective measures to tackle marine litter in the region are seriously ampere by the lack of reliable scientific data. Within this context the need for accurate, coherent and comparable scientific data on marine litter in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas is evident, in order to set priorities for action and address marine litter effectively, thus ensuring the sustainable management and use of the marine and coastal environment of the AdriaticIonian macroregion. The IPA-Adriatic funded DeFishGear project undertook the challenge to address the need for accurate, coherent and comparable scientific data on marine litter in the Adriatic-Ionian macroregion. The DeFishGear project was a 3-year long project piloting coordinated and harmonized actions on the science-policy-society interface for litter-free Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The DeFishGear marine litter assessment report presents the results of the one-year long marine litter surveys aiming to assess the amounts, sources and impacts of marine macro-litter in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. This is the first effort to-date aiming to assess in a coordinated, consistent, comprehensive and harmonized way the amounts, composition and to the extent possible, the sources of marine litter in all marine matrices (beaches, sea surface, seafloor, biota) of seven countries sharing the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. This is, in fact, the first of its kind marine litter assessment - at European and European Regional Seas level - which is based on comparable field data obtained for all marine compartments within the same timeframe, through the application of harmonized monitoring protocols, developed within the framework of the project, thus providing also strategic input with regards to coordinating, harmonizing and even standardizing marine litter monitoring.

Abstract: Quanta plastica può tollerare il nostro organismo? Quanto mercurio c'è nel pesce che mangiamo? L'Adriatico è una discarica di tritolo? Perché meduse e alghe aliene invadono i nostri mari? A queste domande pochi sanno rispondere, non vi è coscienza di quanto oggi accade nel mare, come e perché il Mediterraneo e gli oceani stiano mutando rapidamente sotto i nostri occhi inconsapevoli. Da qui nascono tre reportage che Carnimeo ha scritto navigando oltre le rotte convenzionali nel mare di plastica, nel mare di mercurio e nel mare di tritolo: un'immensa discarica, fotografia e conseguenza del modo in cui abbiamo scelto di vivere. C'è però chi non ci sta a lasciare questa pesante eredità alle generazioni future. Un libro che è denuncia e racconto insieme.

Title: Global food policy report 2017 Abstract: IFPRI's flagship report reviews the major food policy issues, developments, and decisions of 2016, and highlights challenges and opportunities for 2017 at the global and regional levels.

This year's report looks at the impact of rapid urban growth on food security and nutrition, and considers how food systems can be reshaped to benefit both urban and rural populations.

Drawing on recent research, IFPRI researchers and other distinguished food policy experts consider a range of timely questions: What do we know about the impacts of urbanization on hunger and nutrition? What are our greatest research and data needs for better policy making that will ensure food security and improve diets for growing urban populations? How can we better connect rural smallholders to urban food consumers to ensure that smallholders benefit from expanding urban food markets? Why do city environments drive a nutrition transition toward poorer diets, and what policies can improve the nutrition environment? How are urban areas reshaping agricultural value chains for staple crops and benefiting small farmers? What role do informal markets play in feeding cities, and how can they be better governed to increase urban food security? The 2017 Global Food Policy Report also presents data tables and visualizations for several key food policy indicators, including country- level data on hunger, agricultural spending and research investment, and projections for future agricultural production and consumption. In addition to illustrative figures, tables, and a timeline of food policy events in 2016, the report includes the results of a global opinion poll on urbanization and the current state of food policy.
