holistic and reflects current trends in higher education, it is critical to evaluate the role of information literacy in social change. One of the key purposes of a university is not only to help students gain critical thinking and applied skills for the workplace but also to instill a sense of responsibility and desire to make a difference in the world around them. More than just focusing on data collection, it is important for academic libraries to, “shift our thinking to include affective (emotional) learning outcomes that address self-efficacy, student confidence, attitudes, motivation, and valuing what is being learned.”

These key areas are all embodied within the learning outcomes of a service learning curriculum. The thesaurus was developed for a library catalogue in a legal aid clinic in Toronto (Canada). This organization assists low-income injured workers with worker's compensation claims appeals. A small nonprofit with limited resources, it has been actively engaged for nearly fifty years in advocacy and law reform. Its commitment to social justice is also advanced through its work in public legal education, participatory research and community organization, including support of self-help groups. The library serves as an archive of the social history of injured workers' movement in Ontario, as well as a working law library. The library collection has been developed since the clinic's establishment in 1969. It includes not only commercially published literature, but also a substantial proportion of grey literature covering a unique range of materials on workers' compensation in Ontario, the struggles, historical and current, to improve the system and its impact on injured workers' lives and well-being. The library catalogue is online and made available to the public through a link on a website for injured workers. It is intended to be easily maintained by a community organization that may not have a full-time librarian and/or professional cataloguer. All cataloguing is original and full-level, and the bibliographic records also include tables of contents and annotations to improve access to materials through keyword search. All records are also indexed with subject terms drawn from a customized thesaurus, at present linked to the library catalogue as a static pdf file. The thesaurus, built on freeware, aims to make accessible a specialized terminology and examine its complex meanings and many underlying biases. Our presentation focuses on the stories behind many subject terms in the thesaurus. While many existing sources were used in constructing the thesaurus, it has become clear that much of this vocabulary, such as the term “entitlement”, has specific biases and social sensitivities. The library users include lawyers, researchers, and injured workers from a multicultural population with many non-native English speakers. We discuss the

Spopola nelle librerie la catena del libro sospeso

Partita dalla libreria Libreria Ex Libris Cafè, l'iniziativa virale sta contagiando sempre più lettori MILANO - Ogni cliente che entra in libreria trova un libro già pagato che lo aspetta, scelto dalla persona entrata prima di lui. E' questa la “catena del libro sospeso”, la nuova moda virale che sta contagiando le librerie d'Italia e che, dopo il caso di Polla, adesso ha “contagiato” la libreria “Il mio libro” di Milano.

LIBRO SOSPESO - Cristina Di Canio, proprietaria della libreria, ammette che l'idea non è venuta a lei, ma ad un cliente che, ispirandosi al “caffè sospeso napoletano” (pratica che consisteva nel lasciava un caffè già pagato al bar a vantaggio di chi entrava nel bar e non poteva permettersi di pagarlo da sé), aveva comprato il libro "David Golder" di Irene Némirovsky lasciandolo volutamente in cassa.

Trovando l'idea geniale, la responsabile ha rilanciato l'iniziativa su Facebook e su Twitter creando l'hashtag #librosospeso. Il risultato è stato stupefacente: oltre 50 libri passati di mano in mano in appena 6 giorni.

IL CASO DI POLLA - Qualche giorno fa abbiamo dato notizia dell'iniziativa molti simile lanciata dalla Libreria Ex Libris Cafè di Polla (Salerno).

L'iniziativa, dal nome “Un libro in sospeso” è indirizzata principalmente ai ragazzi dai 10 ai 18 anni. Chi partecipa acquista due libri: uno per sé, l'altro per un ragazzo "sconosciuto" dai 10 ai 18 anni. Il libro acquistato viene preso in consegna dal libraio e consegnato a un ragazzo che si recherà in libreria nei successivi sette giorni. Per sapere a chi è andato il tuo "libro sospeso" potrai chiedere in libreria oppure il nome ti sarà inviato alla tua e-mail. challenges in developing a socially responsive thesaurus to meet the needs of this diverse range of users: lHow can both the literary warrant vs. user preferences and sensitivities be best incorporated into a thesaurus entry? l How should one define the primary user group? l What are feasible means for evaluating alternative terms? lHow can the thesaurus reflect historical contexts and meanings?

Technologies for thesaurus construction and display carry their own challenges as well. An earlier initiative to build and evaluate a thesaurus for the clinic's library catalogue used the techniques of Vicente's and Mai's Cognitive Work Analysis to analyze organization work domains and the selected terms. We present case studies of selected thesaurus terms, addressing socially responsive structure of an entry and technological issues of dynamic implementation and sustainability.

We discuss how a thesaurus as a form of controlled vocabulary can also become an educational tool for diverse user groups. This paper is the second update of FAO's original report on this topic. It presents information about the contribution of the forestry sector to national economies at the global, regional and country levels. The study presents the status and trends of the forestry sector's contribution (total employment, value-added and export earnings) in the sector and analyses the driving forces behind these trends. It updates the data and analysis to the year 2011. The study gives a reasonable estimation of the general trends in the sector at the regional and global level.

However, at the level of individual countries, the use of imputed values for some figures (i.e.

FAO estimates rather than published statistics) should be noted and these estimates should be treated with caution.

The Mozambique land law provides statutory recognition of customary land rights and is considered one of the most progressive legislations in Africa. However, the law continues to face implementation challenges, including the realization of equal rights for women and institutional reform. Simply having a progressive law 'is not enough' to bring about transformative change in a country. Recognizing these challenges, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) developed a programme to support the legislation through the capacity development of both direct beneficiaries and those responsible for implementing it. This publication, presents an overview of how this programme developed and what it has achieved to date. It highlights the lessons learned from this core element of FAO's long history of support to the land programme in Mozambique. In particular, the study discusses the challenges facing land and natural resources paralegals in Mozambique today and helps to define the parameters for programme assessment by looking at paralegals in different country contexts. It describes how the programme has included training and capacity-development, not just for NGO-sponsored paralegals, but also for district and local government level officials, justice system officers and staff from public sectors working with land and natural resources.

During El Niño episodes the normal patterns of tropical precipitation and atmospheric circulation become disrupted triggering extreme climate events around the globe: droughts, floods and affecting the intensity and frequency of hurricanes. Disasters create poverty traps that increase the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition. Agriculture is one of the main sectors of the economy that could be severely affected by El Niño event. FAO monitors the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, among other weather related hazards, with a special focus on the potential impacts on the agricultural sector. The objective of this study is to enhance our understanding the El Niño phenomenon using FAO's Agricultural Stress Index System (ASIS). This study is carried out under the auspices of the new FAO Strategic Framework, for the Strategic Objective 5 “Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises”. The study outcomes are expected to enhance further discussions on our understanding of the El Niño Phenomenon and add to the growing literature. This would in turn improve effective early warning capabilities of FAO and partners to issue and trigger timely disaster risk reduction measures.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Success factors in aquaculture enterprises in the Pacific farm : assets and farm performance of private aquaculture enterprises : a case study / Pedro B. Bueno, Pongthanapanich Tipparat. Rome : FAO, 2014. - vi, 88 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.

Four enterprises in four different Pacific Island Countries provide the information for this case study.

The relevance of the case enterprises is set into the Pacific Region context by crosschecking their attributes and the lessons that they provide against the regional issues in and aspirations for aquaculture development. One regional as well as global issue is the compatibility of the goal of food security and profitability; the study shows evidence they are not incompatible and that they can in fact strengthen each other. The cases also demonstrate business models and government interventions that provide economic incentives to farmers to stay in farming without dependence on gratuities and market-distorting subsidies that also tend to reduce self-reliance of farmers. The study provides indications of the significance and impact of the availability, status and application of the farm assets on overall farm performance and on each of the nine indicators of farm performance, namely, the capability of the farm to: 1. achieve profitability, 2. reduce operational cost/ raise technical efficiency, 3. manage financial/economic risk, 4. manage natural risk, 5. manage biological risk, 6. manage social risk, 7. compete in the market, 8. make innovations in business strategy, production and marketing, farm processes, and on technology, and (9) expand. Information was collected through two questionnaires accomplished by the respondents who are owners, managers or advisors of the case farms. An adaptation of the sustainable livelihoods approach, in particular the asset pentagon, was used as the analytical framework; the five livelihood capitals, financial, physical, social, natural/biological, and human, were adapted as “farm assets”. From the result, strategic and practical lessons were drawn on the acquisition, maintenance and application of farm assets to improve farm performance and perhaps achieve farm sustainability, and best practices were gleaned that farmers or farm managers could observe to improve the economic, environmental and social objectives of their aquaculture enterprises. A set of follow up actions is recommended to disseminate and promote the practical application of the findings of this study to the entire region.

FAO has always played a leading role in the publication of practice-oriented technical papers and training materials on fisheries and fish culture. One of the objectives of producing this huge wealth of ready-to-use technical information is to support the sustainable development of fish culture all over the world. Following these principles, two very successful, richly illustrated practical technical guides were produced in the mid-1980s on the mass production of eggs, early fry,1 advanced fry and fingerlings of common carp. Owing to profound political, social and economic changes, the production of fish ponds and small water reservoirs in many countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and in the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) has declined considerably in recent decades. In order to restart and increase carp production in these regions, hands-on training courses supported with handouts has proved useful in the practical training and self-education of concerned and interested fish farmers. The present handout builds on an earlier FAO publication.2 The original watercolour illustrations used in this publication are the work of László Horváth, father of the senior author. Although the set of these pictures is practically complete, in order to prepare an even more understandable technical reference, additional black and white illustrations from other publications, as well as tables and text, have been inserted where sources were correctly indexed and listed under References.

The regional workshop “Identification of Deep-sea Cartilaginous Fishes of the Indian Ocean” was held in Albion, Mauritius, from 10 to 13 June 2014. It was attended by 19 participants from a wide range of countries and fields of expertise, including taxonomy and bioecology of cartilaginous fishes. The general objective of the workshop was to improve the capabilities of scientists from countries bordering the Indian Ocean to identify a range of deep-sea cartilaginous fish species caught in the region. The participants were introduced to the anatomical features and taxonomy of the orders of deep-sea sharks occurring in the Indian Ocean, to the use of the taxonomic keys included in the reference text material (e.g. FAO catalogues and identification guides) and to the methodologies of processing and identifying a selection of specimens. In addition, a biological data collection protocol was illustrated, thus allowing for improved reporting of shark specimens.

Draught animals have played a key role over many centuries in providing farm power for agricultural operations. Since the 1990s, the use of draught animals has declined appreciably in Asia and the Pacific region. In India, the number of draught animals in use is projected to decline from over 85 million in 1975 to 18 million by 2030. Similarly, it is projected that in China draught animals will be completely replaced by a combination of 2-wheel and 4-wheel tractors by 2025.

This is indeed a great achievement. However, beginning in the late 1990s, the environmental impact of mechanization – especially that of tillage implements and practices – has become an issue of major concern. This book outlines an agricultural mechanization strategy that contributes to agricultural sustainability and is environmentally sound, while generating economic development and inclusive growth.

Senegal is one among the poorest countries in the world, but due to its political and social stability its economy is more developed compared to its neighbouring countries. However, the country is prone to natural and economic shocks which have particular negative effects on the resilience capacity and food security of its population. Low rainfall and drought are chronic problems in several locations of the country while occurrence of food crises and food price shocks, have increased the vulnerability of the population to shocks in the last decades. Against this background, reinforcing household resilience to deal with recurrent and often complex shocks is a key element to be taken into account in poverty reduction interventions. Resilience is defined according to the RMTWG's definition (2014):1 “the capacity that ensures adverse stressors and shocks do not have long-lasting adverse development consequences”. FAO has been on the front line of resilience measurement since 2008. Together with other key partners, FAO has been pioneering resilience measurement and analysis with respect to food insecurity through the Resilience Index Measurement and Analysis (RIMA)2 model which has been used to undertake the present analysis. This RIMA index identifies and weighs the six pillars and relating factors that contribute to make household resilient to shocks affecting their food security. It also allows tracing the stability of these factors over time. The pillars that constitute the FAORIMA model are: Adaptive Capacity (AC), Access to Basic Services (ABS), Assets (AST), Income and Food Access (IFA), Sensitivity (S), and Social Safety Nets(SSN), The resilience analysis using the FAO RIMA model provides the evidence for more effectively designing, delivering, monitoring and evaluating assistance to populations in need, based on what they need most.

In 2013, the United Nations declared the International Year of Quinoa. It gave global priority to quinoa, fostering expectations and highlighting challenges. The scientific studies and articles compiled herein describe with precision the potential contribution of quinoa and its limitations with regard to its cultivation, and promote its consumption in different parts of the world. The state of the world's quinoa tracks the “footsteps” of quinoa to determine current sectorial trends in 2013 for this exceptional crop which, due to its nutritional qualities, its diversity and its resistance to drought and cold, has been identified as an important alternative to contribute to global food security, especially in areas where the population has no access to adequate sources of protein, or where there are environmental constraints to food crop production. In this context, the main aim of the State of the Art Report on Quinoa around the World is to bring together, within a single document, upto- date technical and scientific data on growing quinoa so as to encourage the dissemination of this knowledge, promote dialogue and debate amongst partners in the development of quinoa worldwide, and generate new expectations for the crop around the world, in view of its contributions to food security and the family farming economy and also considering the inherent risks of uncontrolled expansion. Special emphasis is given to the need to regulate the use of plant genetic resources, sustainability of agricultural systems and the fair and equitable distribution of benefits from using quinoa outside the Andean region.

Food security impact of agricultural technology adoption under climate change : microevidence from Niger / Leslie Lipper, Solomon Asfaw, Federica Di Battista. - Rome : FAO, 2015. - v, 36 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.

We assess farmers' incentives and the conditioning factors that hinder or promote adoption of agricultural technologies under climate risk and evaluate its impact on food security in Niger. We distinguish between (i) exposure to climatic disruptions, (ii) bio-physical sensitivity to such disruptions, (iii) household adaptive capacity in terms of farmers' ability to prepare and adjust to the resulting stress, and, finally, (iv) system-level adaptive capacity that serve as enabling factors for household-level adaptation. We employ multivariate probit and instrumental variable techniques to model the selection decisions and its impact. The results clearly indicate that while the use of modern inputs and organic fertilizers significantly improves crop productivity, results are unclear for the impact of crop residues. Moreover, factors driving modern input use are different than those of crop residues and organic fertilizer which can be characterized at low investment capital requirements, higher labour requirements and longer time for results versus modern inputs which can be characterized as higher investment capital requirements, less labour requirement and shorter time for returns. Exposure to climatic stress and bio-physical factors are identified as key factors that hinder or accelerate adoption. Results also show that greater climate variability as represented by the coefficient of variation of rainfall and temperature and recent climate shocks as represented by average rainfall shortfall increases use of risk-reducing inputs such as crop residue, but reduce the use of modern inputs.

In addition, the key role of system-level adaptive capacity in governing input use decision. Results presented have implications for understanding and overcoming barriers to selection for each practice, distinguishing structural aspects such as exposure and sensitivity from potential interventions at the household or system levels linked to adaptive capacity.

Food security and adaptation impacts of potential climate smart agricultural practices in Zambia / A. Arslan … [et al.]. - Rome : FAO, 2015. - v, 29 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.

This paper analyzes how a set of widely promoted agricultural practices, including reduced tillage, crop rotations, legume intercropping as well as the use of modern inputs, affect crop yields and their resilience (i.e. probability of disastrously low yields) in Zambia using panel data from the Rural Incomes and Livelihoods Surveys (RILS). The RILS data are merged with a novel set of climatic variables based on geo-referenced historical rainfall and temperature data to understand whether and how the effects of the practices analyzed here change with climatic conditions. We estimate the impacts on the level of maize yields and the probability of very low yields controlling for time-invariant unobservable household characteristics. We find no significant impact of minimum soil disturbance, positive impact of legume intercropping and a negative impact of crop rotation on maize yields, which is off-set by a significantly positive impact under highly variable rainfall conditions. We also find that the average positive impacts of modern input use are conditioned by climatic variables, whereas that of legume intercropping is robust to shocks. Timely access to fertilizer is the most robust determinant of yields and resilience. This paper provides important insights into the interplay between food security outcomes and climatic variables, and provides policy implications for targeted interventions to improve the productivity and the resilience of smallholder agriculture in Zambia in the face of climate change.

The document School feeding and possibilities for direct purchases from family farming in Latin American countries was developed in the technical cooperation framework between the government of the Federative Republic of Brazil, through the Brazilian Agency for Technical Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC) and the National Fund for the Development of Education of the Ministry of Education, FNDE/MEC, and the FAO Regional Office for LAC (RLC), in order to support the design and implementation of sustainable school feeding programmes (SFPs) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), taking into account the challenges and lessons learned through Brazil´s National School Feeding Programme (PNAE for its initials in Portuguese). This paper reviews the experiences and progress made with land consolidation and land banking following the transition in Central and Eastern Europe from centralized economies towards market-oriented democracies. It identifies and compares the approaches to address land fragmentation which arose from the land reforms of the 1990s or which had existed historically.

The paper is a thus sequel to Land Tenure Working Paper No. 24 on the experiences of land reform in the region.

As the facilitating agency of the IYFF, FAO contributed to this worldwide campaign by setting in motion a policy dialogue process, including six Regional Dialogues on Family Farming, civil society consultations at the FAO Regional Conferences - all of which focused attention on the challenges facing family farming and the actions that need to be taken to foster their role as key drivers of food production and stewards of natural resources, territories and landscapes in all regions of the world. This year-long process culminated with the Global Dialogue on Family Farming which proved to be a phenomenal representation of the energy and action that characterized the entire Year.

As many developing countries, Philippines is making vigorous efforts to attract and facilitate private investment in agriculture with the expectation that such investment will contribute to production growth, poverty reduction and food security. However, recent research has highlighted that investments do not necessarily produce positive results. Several studies have shown that certain types of investment, in particular large-scale land acquisitions, have led to negative effects such as displacing small farmers, undermining or negating existing land and labour rights, reducing food security and increasing livelihood vulnerability. Conversely, investments adopting inclusive business models and respecting rural populations' rights seem to be more beneficial for small farmers and workers. The cases analysed in this report show that the investment models and contractual arrangements implemented by Unifrutti -a major private company producer, processor and exporter of pineapple and banana in the Mindanao Region- have had positive implications for the livelihood of the rural communities involved. However, the study also demonstrates that women and men have not equally benefitted from the investment opportunities. An important lesson learned is that gender neutral practices and approaches do not necessarily lead to gender equitable results. Instead, both investment schemes and policy frameworks need to recognize and address the differentiate needs and priorities of women and men to ensure more gender equitable distribution of benefits.

Agriculture, including crop, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, depend largely on the sound use of natural resources. Sustainable agriculture must strike a balance between protecting and sustainably using natural resources while at the same time meeting society's growing needs by offering decent and resilient livelihoods. FAO and its key stakeholders need to share a common understanding of what sustainable food and agriculture means, and have appropriate strategies and approaches to support its implementation, in different contexts and at different scales. These Environment and Social Management Guidelines (ESM) are an important building block for FAO's approach to achieve sustainable development and provide guidelines for FAO headquarters and decentralized offices for the management of environmental and social (E&S) risks in its strategies, policies and field projects.
