Typically, IBV is titrated in embryonated chicken eggs, and the infectivity of the virus dilutions is determined by assessing clinical signs in the embryos as evidence of viral propagation. In this study, we used a dotimmunoblotting assay (DIA) to measure the titers of IBV vaccines that originated from different pathogenic strains or attenuation methods in embryonated eggs, and we compared this assay to the currently used method, clinical sign evaluation. Heat shock proteins (Hsps) can be used as modulators to enhance both innate and adaptive immune responses. In the present study, recombinant baculoviruses expressing the PCV2 Cap protein and the N-terminal 22–370 amino acids of porcine Gp96 (Gp96N), Hsp90, and Hsp70 (rBaccap/Gp96N, rBac-cap/Hsp90 and rBac-cap/Hsp70, respectively) were constructed and the immune responses were examined in mice and piglets. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) is an isothermal amplification technology that can rapidly amplify proviral DNA from multiple subtypes of HIV‐1 in under twenty minutes without complex equipment. In this study we added reverse transcription (RT) to RPA to allow detection of both HIV‐1 RNA and DNA. Kim Sodsai Tovanabutra, Agnes-Laurence Chenine The prevailing method to assess HIV-1 replication and infectivity is to measure the production of p24 Gag protein by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Since fluorescent bead-based technologies offer a broader dynamic range and higher sensitivity, this study describes a p24 capture Luminex assay capable of detecting HIV-1 subtypes A, B, C, D, circulating recombinant forms (CRF) CRF01_AE and CRF02_AG, which together are responsible for over 90% of HIV-1 infections worldwide. The success of the assay lies in the identification and selection of a cross-reactive capture antibody (clone 183-H12-5C). Fifty-six isolates that belonged to six HIV-1 subtypes and CRFs were successfully detected with p-values below 0.021; limits of detection ranging from 3.7 to 3x104 pg/ml. A novel high-throughput method was developed for simultaneous detection and differentiation of seven porcine pathogens by multiplex PCR based on a GenomeLab Gene Expression Profiler (GeXP) analyser. The pathogens included in this study were pseudorabies virus (PRV), classical swine fever virus (CSFV), African swine fever virus (ASFV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine parvovirus (PPV), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Seven pairs of chimeric primers, consisting of a pathogenspecific sequence fused to a universal sequence at the 5'end, were used to initiate the PCR, after which a set of universal primers was used for the subsequent cycles of the PCR. Amplification products were separated by capillary electrophoresis and identified using fluorescence spectrophotometry. The specificity of the GeXP assay was examined with single and mixed pathogen cDNA/ DNA templates. The specific DNA product amplification peaks of seven pathogens were observed on the GeXP analyser. Negative controls did not produce DNA products. The sensitivity was evaluated by performing the assay on serial 10-fold dilutions of the plasmids containing the target sequence. Under optimised conditions this assay achieved a sensitivity of 100–1000 copies/µL for a single virus and 1000 copies/µL when all of the seven pre-mixed viral targets were present. Furthermore, the GeXP-PCR assay was 100% specific when 58 clinical samples were tested in comparison with the conventional PCR method. Edina Dervovic, Mirsada Hukic Hantaviruses are the causative agents of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Euroasia and of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the North, Central and South America. HFRS is endemic in the Balkan Peninsula, where sporadic cases or outbreaks have been reported. Puumala virus (PUUV) is the causative agent of nephropathia epidemica (NE), a mild form of HFRS. PUUV is carried by the bank voles (Myodes glareolus). In this study, we investigated viral RNA from 76 tissues samples ( lung n = 30, heart n = 6, liver n = 18 and kidney n = 22) of infected naturall rodent hosts in the area of Central Dinarides caught in live traps.

Puumala virus was extracted from 34,7 % (16/46) rodents by nested reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and realtime RT-PCR. F protein is expressed on the surface of infected cells, and induces cell fusion. In the present report, expression plasmids of the F, G and SH proteins were constructed and cell fusion activity was investigated under T7 RNA polymerase.

F protein alone induced cell fusion at a lower concentration than previously reported, and co-expression of F and SH proteins induced cell fusion more efficiently than F protein alone. Palivizumab is the only prophylactic agent against RSV infection. Palivizumabresistant strains having mutations of the F protein of K272E and S275F were reported. Bibliotecari al tempo di google: profili, competenze, formazione Milano, 17-18 marzo 2016 Fondazione Stelline

Si rinnova l'appuntamento dei bibliotecari italiani alle Stelline Procede celermente la preparazione del Convegno Bibliotecari al tempo di Google, che si terrà alla Fondazione Stelline di Milano i giorni 17 e 18 marzo 2016. Siamo giunti alla ventunesima edizione e "Biblioteche oggi", che di questa manifestazione ha rappresentato da sempre il perno, è particolarmente orgogliosa del percorso compiuto.

Nei numeri dell'ultima edizione possiamo leggere la conferma del successo di questo evento, divenuto l'appuntamento più frequentato e irrinunciabile dei bibliotecari italiani: 2.000 partecipanti registrati, più di 40 relatori italiani e stranieri, oltre 80 aziende presenti all'esposizione Bibliostar. Il filo rosso, costante di questo meeting di fine inverno, era rappresentato ancora una volta dall'impatto che l'innovazione, favorita dall'evoluzione tecnologica, sta determinando sui servizi bibliotecari e sugli utenti.

Se nel 2015 al centro dei lavori del convegno è stata la biblioteca digitale e la conseguente trasformazione del tradizionale modello di servizio, nel 2016 il focus si sposta sul bibliotecario, per approfondire quali siano le competenze, i profili professionali e i percorsi formativi di chi è chiamato a confrontarsi con un ambiente sempre più orientato al digitale. Quali le nuove skill richieste? Quali i nuovi strumenti interpretativi del servizio e del proprio ruolo?

Come riposizionarsi al tempo di Google? Quali le strategie per rispondere adeguatamente alle sfide del mondo digitale e dei motori di ricerca? Come trasformare una sfida in un'opportunità?

Numerosi gli interventi in programma di qualificati esperti italiani e stranieri. Di particolare rilevo e prestigio la presenza di Sari

Vito Roberto Gassi è nato a Bari il 9 ottobre 1975. Attualmente lavora come impiegato per una multinazionale nel settore trasporti e logistica. Presso la facoltà di Economia di Bari ha conseguito una laurea in Economia Aziendale e un D.p.u. in Economia e Amministrazione delle Imprese. A luglio 2011 il suo primo romanzo La mosca bianca è opera vincitrice della terza edizione del concorso nazionale Narrando. Il 2012 segna l'esordio in campo letterario con la Albusedizioni.

Recensione: Un romanzo inedito, in cui il protagonista non ricorda perché si trova tra la panchina e il lampione e per quanti tentativi faccia non riesce ad allontanarsi. Ognuno dei personaggi che gli fanno visita porta con sé un pezzo di storia propria e condivisa che tassello dopo tassello gli permette di colmare il vuoto nella sua testa.

Ogni personaggio rappresenta una fase fisica e mentale della vita che ognuno di noi percorre, incarnandone dubbi, timori, gioie, sensazioni e situazioni fortemente attuali. Un finale imprevedibile che conferma quanto l'amore sia ancora l'unico rimedio a uno dei peggiori mali del nostro attuale tempo.

C o s a a m a n o sottolineare i lettori italiani? A quanto pare, romanzi e saggi motivazionali (o almeno per quel che riguarda la lettura in digitale sul Kindle). Ma l'altra domanda da porsi è: quali sono i motivi per cui è giusto sottolineare le pagine di un libro?Abbiamo provato a elencarne 5, sicuramente non con la pretesa di essere esaurienti, né di convincere coloro che non sottolineano i libri a iniziare a farlo. [leggi di più] 1) Perché il libro è mio: sembrerebbe un motivo infantile, ma se si considera il libro come un acquisto è giusto che il proprietario ne faccia ciò che crede giusto; ben venga, legittimamente, sottolineare; 2) Per ricordare: la sottolineatura aiuta a ricordare passaggi particolarmente affascinanti, frasi importanti per la vita, nomi dei personaggi… è un sostegno alla memoria; 3) Per criticare: ricordare potrebbe anche includere concetti negativi o su cui si è in disaccordo; sottolineare aiuta a preparare il terreno per dissentire sulle posizioni dell'autore; 4) Per riassumere: sottolineando parti di frasi è più facile riassumere; “comporre”, attraverso la sottolineatura, il fulcro concettuale della pagina letta; 5) Per correggere: c'è chi “si diverte” a scovare (eventuali) refusi presente nei libri che legge, e lo fa, però, augurandosi di usare il meno possibile lo strumento di sottolineatura.

Mediterranean Agronomic Institue of Bari In Olanda un architetto ha progettato una biblioteca per bambini mobile ed espandibile, che gira per la regione per promuovere la lettura tra i più piccoli e stimolare la fantasia - Le immagini e la storia In Olanda le strade sono strette e ci sono tanti piccoli villaggi che non possono permettersi una biblioteca propria: come fare a portare la lettura anche tra i bambini di questi piccoli paesi? La soluzione è il Biebbus.

Come racconta Domus.it, nella regione di Zaan, una parte dell'area metropolitana di Amsterdam, l'architetto Jord den Hollander ha progettato una soluzione: la 'Uitschuif Biebbus' ovvero una biblioteca per bambini mobile espandibile.

Per risolvere i problemi di spazio e rendere la visita della biblioteca un'esperienza unica, l'architetto ha creato due stanze che slittano una sull'altra. La stanza più piccola e più interna, fissata al rimorchio, ha il soffitto trasparente e contiene 7.000 libri per bambini. Quando il camion si stacca e parte, un container da navi scivola verso l'alto come una navicella spaziale: al suo interno uno spazio arredato con cuscini, dove i bambini possono leggere, andare su internet e godersi la vista del vicinato dall'alto. Dal settembre 2010 la biblioteca è operativa e serve 30-40 bambini.

The thirty-ninth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), including the sixth session of the Committee on Administration and Finance (CAF) and the ninth session of the Compliance Committee (CoC), was attended by representatives from 23 Contracting Parties, 3 non-Members as well as 7 intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations. In the context of the amendment process of the GFCM legal framework, the Commission esamine and adopted by consensus its new rules of procedure and financial regulations, in line with the new GFCM Agreement entered into force on 20 May 2014. During the session, the cooperating non-contracting party status was granted to Georgia and Ukraine in light of their increasing involvement in GFCM activities in the Black Sea. Moreover, in order to enhance cooperation with partner organizations, the Commission, based on a proposed set of objectives and activities, requested the GFCM Secretariat to finalize and sign, on behalf of GFCM/FAO, four new memoranda of understanding with MedPAN, ATLAFCO, OceanCare and EATIP. A set of important measures for the management and conservation of fisheries resources in both the Mediterranean and the Black Sea were discussed and agreed upon. In particular, the Commission adopted four recommendations, namely: Recommendation GFCM/39/2015/1 establishing further precautionary and emergency measures in 2016 for small pelagic stocks in the Adriatic Sea (GSA 17 and GSA 18); Recommendation GFCM/39/2015/2 on the establishment of a set of minimum standards for bottom trawling fisheries of demersal stocks in the Strait of Sicily, pending the development and adoption of a multiannual management plan; Recommendation GFCM/39/2015/3 on the establishment of a set of measures to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in turbot fisheries in the Black Sea and Recommendation GFCM/39/2015/4 on management measures for piked dogfish in the Black Sea. The session also provided an opportunity for GFCM Members to reaffirm their willingness to adopt measures to deter illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and to review the progress made in the implementation of the related roadmaps. In this respect, the Commission welcomed the initiative to proclaim, on 24 April, an international day for the fight against IUU fishing. Necessary actions in this respect should be explored. In light of the growing importance of the aquaculture sector in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, and building upon the outcomes of the Regional Aquaculture Conference held in December 2014, the Commission established a task force in charge of developing a “strategy for the sustainable development of Mediterranean and Black Sea aquaculture”.i Finally, the Commission adopted its programme of work for the next intersession and approved, for the first time, its triennial budget (firm for the first two years) amounting to US dollars 2 359 564 for 2015 and US dollars 2 479 727 for 2016. The current mandate of the GFCM Bureau as well as those of CoC, CAF and the Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) were exceptionnally extended for a two-year term.

Asian aquaculture has achieved outstanding growth in the past three decades with an average annual rate of nearly 10 percent. As a result, Asia is now contributing about 90 percent of the globalaquaculture production. Fish now supply over 20 percent of animal protein in the diet of the Asian population and 60 percent of this is from aquaculture. In addition, Asia is the most important supplier to the global seafood trade and Asian aquaculture accounts for the majority of the traded seafood commodities. It is expected that increased population growth and further economic development will lead to increased fish consumption and as a consequence the global demand for food fish is expected to increase by 30 to 40 million tonnes by 2030 from the current level. If the increasing demand for fish is to be met, the continued growth of aquaculture in Asia is absolutely necessary. There are two main reasons for this: the stagnant capture fish production and the dominance of Asia in the global aquaculture industry. Achieving 60 percent growth in the next 15 years will not only be required for the Asian aquaculture sector to meet the increasing fish demand but will also have enormous implications for the livelihoods of the vast rural population in many Asian countries. Intensification of aquaculture has been the most important factor contributing to the rapid development of aquaculture in Asia. However, although contributing to increased fish production and improved economic efficiency, some intensive aquaculture systems and practices have raised issues of increasing public concern, such as negative

environmental impacts, pressure on certain resources e.g. water, land, fish meal etc. and increased vulnerability of small farmers. With the scarcity of such resources, it is impossible to support the desired growth of fish production from the expansion of aquaculture. So, the key is how to achieve sustainable aquaculture intensification. In order to support the sustainable growth of aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific region, FAO is currently implementing a regional initiative on sustainable intensification of aquaculture (SIA) for blue growth. Recognizing the efforts that have been made in many Asian countries to address the issues related to the sustainability of intensive aquaculture in recent years, and the progress that has been achieved so far, FAO considers documentation and dissemination of existing innovative systems and practices for sustainiable aquaculture production an effective approach to promote SIA in the region.

Thus, FAO in collaboration with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA), has initiated a programme to document and disseminate successful SIA practices in the region. The programme, jointly implemented

by FAO and NACA, successfully identified and documented, with the contribution of technical experts in the respective countries, 12 SIA practices that were deemed to have contributed to the sustainability of intensive aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific region. The programme also supported a regional workshop for sharing and validating the documented success stories and for developing an appropriate strategy to scale up these successful practices. This publication includes the 12 documented successful SIA practices, an introduction to the process of selection and documentation, and a synthesis report on the documented success stories.

Disasters and food insecurity are directly interconnected. Droughts, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis and other hazards can spoil food; destroy agriculture, livestock, fishing, food processing infrastructure, assets, inputs and production capacity. They interrupt market access, trade and food supply, reduce income, deplete savings and erode livelihoods.

Drought, plant pests and diseases such as locusts and armyworms, animal diseases like African swine fever, and food contamination or adulteration have a direct economic impact by reducing or eliminating farm production, by adversely affecting prices, trade, and market access and by decreasing farm income and employment. Economic crises such soaring food prices reduce real income, force the poor to sell their assets, decrease food consumption, reduce their dietary diversity and access to safe and quality food.

Disasters create poverty traps that increase the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition. FAO, through its several specialized units, monitors the evolution of hazards and provides early indications and warnings on possible impacts on agriculture and food security. One such phenomenon is the periodic occurrence of El Niño. During El Niño episodes the normal patterns of tropical precipitation and atmospheric circulation are disrupted, hence triggering extreme climate events around the globe: droughts, floods and affecting the intensity and frequency of hurricanes. Agriculture is one of the main sectors of the economy that could be severely affected by El Niño phenomenon. FAO monitors the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, among other weather related hazards, with a special focus on the potential impacts on the agricultural sector. FAOGIEWS communicates developments during the gestation period and issues alerts and warnings if and when necessary. The objective of this study is to enhance our under standing of the El Niño phenomenon using FAO's Agricultural Stress Index System (ASIS). FAO-ASIS, developed with the support of EU/FAO Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction Programme, is based on remote sensing data that highlights anomalous vegetation growth and potential drought in arable land during a given cropping season. This study is carried out under the auspices of the new FAO Strategic Framework, for the Strategic Objective 5 “Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises”, Major Area of Work on Natural Hazards.

Tackling climate change is central to achieving a sustainable future for the world's growing population and food security must lie at the heart of these efforts. Climate change is one of the key drivers of biodiversity loss. The stressors and risks posed by climate change to the various sectors of genetic resources for food and agriculture (plants, animals, forests, aquatic resources, invertebrates and micro-organisms) are manifold. However, genetic resources for food and agriculture are also expected to play a signiďŹ cant role in mitigation of and adaptation to the consequences of climate change in support of efforts to achieve food security and nutrition objectives. Genetic resources could contribute greatly to our efforts to cope with climate change, but in many cases the magnitude and speed of climate change will surpass our ability to identify, select, reproduce and - eventually - use these resources in the ďŹ eld. Climate change is already affecting natural ecosystems and food production systems. In its Fifth Assessment Report, Climate Change 2014, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) considers, among other things, the vulnerability of human and natural systems, the observed impacts of climate change and the potential for adaptation. The IPCC Synthesis Report recognizes that agriculture offers unique synergies that can contribute to efforts to meet the climate change adaptation and mitigation needs of the coming decades, in support of food security goals. Decisions and actions related to the management of genetic resources for food and agriculture need to be taken in a timely manner if we want to adapt agriculture to the effects of a changing climate. Future use of genetic resources for food and agriculture in climate change adaptation and mitigation depends upon ensuring that the relevant resources remain available. The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides an intergovernmental forum for the discussion and development of knowledge and policies relevant to biodiversity for food and agriculture. Its work on climate change is of tremendous importance in supporting food global security and sustainable development, for present and future generations. In June 2015, the Conference, the highest governing body of the FAO, approved the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Integration of Genetic Diversity into National Climate Change Adaptation Planning. The Guidelines, developed under the aegis of FAO's Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, aim to assist countries in managing genetic resources as a pivotal reservoir and tool at their disposal to adapt agriculture and build resilience into agricultural and food production systems.

An important component of the implementation of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is the induction of dominant lethal mutations to achieve sterility in released flies and the subsequent identification of the different flies captured in traps. The accurate identification of wild and sterile flies is central to insect pest management programmes that integrate the SIT as well as to the application of other appropriate pest control strategies. In the specific case of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wied.), due to its major quarantine and economic importance, misidentification of flies may have serious consequences. Identifying sterile flies as wild flies in areas where sterile flies are released to suppress or eliminate wild populations may lead to implementation of unnecessary mitigation measures that can be time-consuming and costly. Identifying wild flies as sterile flies may cause premature suspension of control actions in areas with small residual populations which can put at risk the progress of suppression and eradication programmes. This manual is a product of recent studies on the effect of gamma radiation on testes and ovaries of the VIENNA Mediterranean fruit fly temperature sensitive lethal (TSL) genetic sexing strains, which are being used in most Mediterranean fruit fly mass-rearing facilities in the world. It includes standardised and updated procedures to determine the fertility or sterility of adults of these strains. Consequently, this is a very useful document to support SIT based area-wide integrated pest management programmes that release VIENNA Mediterranean fruit fly TSL strains. These studies were partially funded by research project No. 15403 sponsored by the Insect Pest Control Section of the Joint FAO/IAEA Programme of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture. The Programa MOSCAMED (SAGARPASENASICA) played an important role in these studies by providing funds and access to the Mediterranean fruit fly mass rearing facility, identification laboratories and to the International Fruit Fly Training Centre, both placed in Metapa de Domínguez, Chiapas, Mexico.

Due to its great variety in geomorphology, topography, and climate, Turkey has a large diversity of habitats so it is very rich in plant species and endemism. One plant, perhaps the most important one, is wheat. Wheat is one of the most important agricultural commodities in Turkey, and the country ranks among the top ten wheat producers in the world. Wheat is a staple and strategic crop and an essential food in the Turkish diet, consumed mostly as bread, but also as bulgur, yufka (flat bread), and cookies. Total annual wheat production is estimated at 19.6 million metric tons, valued at approximately US$6.9 billion in 2010. Total production area is approximately 8 million ha (FAO, 2012). Value addition via processing makes the wheat industry one of the major sectors in the economy.

Turkey, both in terms of environmental conditions and in terms of culture, is very suitable for wheat cultivation. At the same time Turkey is the mother land of wheat. Wheat is generally produced in Thrace and Mediterranean, Aegean, and Marmara seaside places as a spring type and in other places it is produced as a winter type. The average yield of wheat is 2,441 kg/ha in Turkey (FAO, 2012). The cultivation of wheat in Turkey for over 8,000 years has resulted in a large number of named wheat varieties (landraces) in addition to the existing wild and semi-domesticated wheat relatives.

Modern (improved) varieties have been available in Turkey since the early part of the 20th century and semi-dwarf varieties were introduced from Mexico in 1966; however, the level of their adoption varies greatly from region to region. After the introduction of new varieties there was a big increase in wheat yield. At the same time these results were an indication of an increase in the use of inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides as well as in the use of modern wheat varieties. Now Turkey has achieved self-sufficiency in many products such as wheat and it is also one of the wheat exporting countries. In this case, improved new varieties and production techniques have made a great

While on the one hand increasing wheat production as a result of high yield potential can be seen as a positive development, on the other hand, incorporating new wheat varieties into the production process has led to the reduction of genetic resources (local wheat varieties/landraces). Some research reports from Turkey showed that the share of modern wheat varieties in Turkish agriculture was very high and the share of local landraces was under 1% percent of the total wheat production area in the country (Mazid et al., 2009). Thus there has been a decline in genetic diversity in the Turkish wheat crop. Turkey is one of the centers of origin of wheat and wheat has been grown on about 8.5 million ha with production of around 20 million metric tons annually. Though modern varieties are widely grown in most areas, some landraces (LRs) are still being planted in some niches, especially in remote and mountainous areas, mainly for home consumption with little marketing. Studies have shown the average elevation of currently grown wheat landrace populations is 1,133 m and it was determined that 93% of the landrace production is for houshold uses.

This practical guide to sustainable cereals production reviews progress in the adoption of Save and Grow practices by smallholder farmers in the developing world. It shows how Save and Grow practices helped restore production in wheat-growing regions of India and Kazakhstan, where Green Revolution technologies had faltered, and raised the productivity of low-input maize systems practised by farmers in Central America and East Africa. The examples here highlight the rewards of integrating cereals with animal production and forestry. In Asia, farming families that raise fish in their rice fields harvest more rice and have more nourishing diets. In Brazil, a maize/livestock system is replacing unsustainable soybean monoculture. In Zambia, keeping nitrogen-rich trees in maize fields is more cost-effective than mineral fertilizer. Save and Grow has proven itself in farmers' fields. The challenge now is to upscale the approach in national programmes. That will require a revitalized global partnership for development and major increases in investment in agriculture. It will increase cereal production, keep ecosystems healthy, strengthen resilience to climate change, and progressively improve land and soil quality. By raising the productivity and incomes of smallholders, it will promote the inclusive economic growth needed to free millions of rural people from abject poverty. Linking smallholder production to well-designed social protection programmes will ensure food security and nutrition for the most vulnerable and help eradicate hunger and malnutrition forever.

This publication provides a resource for countries to enhance their early warning capabilities and capacities. It emphasizes the need to build and connect links between existing food safety infrastructure (e.g. surveillance and food control) and to improve collaborative relationships among all of the different food chain stakeholders in order to protect public health and the food supply.

Indigenous food systems, agroecology and the voluntary guidelines on tenure: a meeting between indigenous peoples and FAO : 2-3 February 2015, FAO Headquarters, Rome. - Rome : FAO, 2015. - 40 p. : ill.

On the 2nd and 3rd February 2015, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a technical meeting between indigenous peoples' representatives and FAO staff. The meeting was attended by twenty indigenous peoples from the different socio-cultural regions, including members of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), political leaders, technical experts, indigenous food producers and traditional knowledge-holders. In addition, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the International Land Coalition (ILC), civil society and academia also attended the discussions. The last time indigenous peoples' representatives and experts met in FAO headquarters was in 2010 for the approval of the FAO Policy on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples. In those five years, FAO has changed significantly, opening its doors to key stakeholders including academia, civil society, cooperatives, and the private sector.

It was therefore important to do the same with indigenous peoples. This event has also served the purpose of complying with the 2014 recommendation from the UNPFII for FAO to organize with Indigenous Peoples a meeting on the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT). The timing of the meeting provided the opportunity to add new elements to the debate initiated in two important events hosted by FAO in 2014, namely the FAO Symposium on Agroecology and the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2), coorganized with the World Health Organization (WHO). these meetings, the relevance and importance of traditional knowledge, indigenous food systems and local environmental management rose up during the course of the discussions. The meeting Indigenous Food Systems, Agroecology and the Voluntary Guidelines on tenure: A meeting between Indigenous Peoples and FAO was organized by a facilitation committee composed of five indigenous experts and the Advocacy Unit of the Office for Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development (OPCA), which is the focal point for indigenous peoples' issues within FAO. Together, OPCA and the facilitation committee defined the criteria to select indigenous representatives. The criteria took into account regional representation, youth representation and gender balance, with one indigenous representative per each of the seven regions identified by the UNPFII and seven technical experts in areas of common interest to Indigenous Peoples and FAO. This report includes the work plan, identifying concrete steps that can be followed in relation to voluntary guidelines (the VGGT and the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication, known as SSF Guidelines), indigenous food systems and fisheries among others. Section II contains the key outcomes generated by the meeting, while Section III descrive in a narrative manner the steps to follow for collaborative actions between FAO and indigenous peoples (summarized in Table 1 in Annex A, which also identifies focal points both from FAO and indigenous organizations for each action).

The aim of this paper is to provide policy-makers with a helpful overview of the technical and economic aspects of water use in agriculture, with particolar emphasis on crop and livestock production. Through 2050, in many countries, agriculture will remain an important determinant of economic growth, poverty reduction, and food security, even as, over time, the proportion of agricultural revenue in national gross income declines. Water use in agriculture will remain substantial, irrigated areas will expand and competition for water will increase in all sectors. Most likely, overall supplies of land and water will be sufďŹ cient to achieve global food production goals in 2050; although poverty and food insecurity will remain pressing challenges in several regions and countries. Thus, the focus of this report is on the regional and national aspects of food security.

With one-third of humanity totally dependent on groundwater for their daily needs and 99% of the Planet Earth's accessible freshwater found in aquifers, there is a need to understand what would deliver sound governance of this natural resource in the face of its over exploitation and degradation over the past half century. Groundwater is also crucial for irrigated agriculture where surface water of suitable quality is not available.

However, most - if not all - of our exploited aquifers are not being managed to conserve and protect these vital freshwater resources, according to experts. Given the current state of aquifers and the degree of human dependency upon groundwater, in 2011 our respective organizations launched the initiative “Groundwater Governance: A Global Framework for Action”, in collaboration with many regional partners and agencies responsible for managing groundwater use and aquifer protection. In the context of this project, groundwater governance “comprises the enabling framework and guiding principles for responsible collective action to ensure control, protection and sociallysustainable utilisation of groundwater resources for the benefit of humankind and dependent ecosystems”. The project has benefited immensely from the contributions of over seven hundred water experts and stakeholder groups throughout the world. It has produced 12 thematic analyses and organized five Regional Consultations resulting in five Regional Diagnostics, and a global expert consultation. It synthesised the findings into a Global Diagnostic and shaped a Shared Global Vision and a Framework of Action, to serve as valuable tools for countries seeking to improve the management of their groundwater resources and aquifers. We believe that these products provide means to face the looming threats to groundwater resources and to close the gap in groundwater and aquifer governance. The main findings of the project confirm that the world's groundwater resources are falling victim to a lack of effective governance. To a significant extent, the over abstraction of ground water reflects the incentives that users face resulting from both market and policy failures. The available enabling frameworks and guiding principles are in insufficient use and there is a paucity of responsible collective action. This is one of the root causes of groundwater depletion and degradation of aquifers, and urgent call to action is needed if trends in the state of this resource are to be reversed. The present document provides a synthetic overview of the consultative process and the main achievements. It conveys key messages from the results of the project's analyses, including the finding that governance of the world's groundwater resources is still in infancy. The decision-making processes concerning groundwater use and aquifer management are often poorly informed, leading to patterns of use that cannot be sustained and resulting in entrenched poverty and the loss of environmental and social 'goods' upon which cities and rural communities have come to depend. Conscious of the need to raise political awareness at global level and to act with urgency to improve groundwater governance, our respective institutions are committed to integrating the recommendations of this project into their work programmes.

Our sincere hope is that the initiative will be acted upon by the decision makers who can make a difference in reversing the current trend of groundwater depletion and aquifer pollution and sustaining the goods and services accrued from our valuable groundwater resources.

This document presents the first major global assessment ever on soils and related issues. Why was such an assessment not carried out before? We have taken soils for granted for a long time. Nevertheless, soils are the foundation of food production and food security, supplying plants with nutrients, water, and support for their roots. Soils function as Earth's largest water filter and storage tank; they contain more carbon than all above-ground vegetation, hence regulating emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases; and they host a tremendous diversity of organisms of key importance to ecosystem processes. However, we have been witnessing a reversal in attitudes, especially in light of serious concerns expressed by soil practitioners in all regions about the severe threats to this natural resource. In this more auspicious context, when the international community is fully recognizing the need for concerted action , the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS), the main scientific advisory body to the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), took the initiative to prepare this

much needed assessment. The issuance of this first “Status of the World's Soil Resources” report was most appropriately timed with the occasion of the International Year of Soils (2015) declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations. It was made possible by the commitment and contributions of hosts of reputed soil scientists and their institutions. Our gratitude goes to the Lead Authors, Contributing Authors, Editors and Reviewers who have participated in this effort, and in particular to the Chairperson of the ITPS, for his dedicated guidance and close follow up. Many governments have supported the participation of their resident scientists in the process and contributed resources, thus also assuring the participation of experts from developing countries and countries with economies in transition. In addition, a Technical Summary was acknowledged by representatives of governments assembled in the Plenary Assembly of the GSP, signaling their appreciation of the many potential uses of the underlying report. Even more comprehensive and inclusive arrangements will be sought in the preparations of further, updated versions. The report is aimed at scientists, laymen and policy makers alike. It provides in particular an essential benchmark against periodical assessment and reporting of soil functions and overall soil health at global and regional levels. This is of particular relevance to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the international community pledged to achieve. Indeed, these goals can only be achieved if the crucial natural resources - of which soils is one - are sustainably managed.

In a crowded world with populations still rising and consumption patterns changing, humankind has not done enough to plan and manage the future development of land and water resources. After decades of underinvestment, poor management and lack of governance, the evidence is widely apparent. From dramatic mudslides on slopes too steep to bear human settlement, to unprecedented inundation of whole river basins, the impact on human lives from extreme meteorological events makes the news. What does not, though, is the creeping degradation of the land and water systems that provide for global food security and rural livelihoods. In some regions, whole systems are now at risk. Urgent steps need to be taken to reverse trends in their degradation while maintaining their integrity and productivity.

There is no doubt that access to and management of land and water resources need to improve markedly. Projected demands for food and agriculture production have to be met, malnutrition and rural poverty still have to be addressed, and competing demands for land and water must be reconciled with concerns over rapid degradation of natural systems. This calls for improved governance of land and water resources and a closer integration of policies, combined with increased and more strategic investment targeting food security and poverty alleviation. This book presents the state of land and water resources for food production, and analyses threats to food security and sustainable development. The threats result not just from the relative physical scarcity of land and water.

Trends in population growth, and changes in diets and climate present a complex set of challenges to which agricultural practices must adapt. The potential of the world's land and water systems to meet these challenges is examined in this context. Options for managing some of the 'systems at risk' to achieve sustainable levels of output are explored together with the attendant risks and trade-offs.

The book discusses required institutional and policy changes, and technical approaches needed in the specific environments. The main findings and recommendations are presented below.

Land and water resources and the way they are used are central to the challenge of improving food security across the world. Demographic pressures, climate change, and the increased competition for land and water are likely to increase vulnerability to food insecurity, particularly in Africa and Asia. The challenge of providing sufficient food for everyone worldwide has never been greater. The world's population continues to rise. Today's population of around 7 billion is expected to increase to about 9 billion by 2050. By this time, another one billion tonnes of cereals and 200 million extra tonnes of livestock products will need to be produced every year. The imperative for such agricultural growth is strongest in developing countries, where the challenge is not just to produce food but to ensure that families have access that will bring them food security. For nutrition to improve and for food insecurity and undernourishment to recede, future agricultural production will have to rise faster than population growth. This will have to occur largely on existing agricultural land. Improvements will thus have to come from sustainable intensification that makes effective use of land and water resources as well as not causing them harm. The policies, practices and technologies needed to boost production and strengthen food security have long been discussed. Institutional mechanisms, the development of trade and markets and the financial facilities needed to raise productivity in a sustainable way have been negotiated at the international level. At national level, measures to raise output and strengthen food security are being put in place, including investment in pro-poor, market-friendly policies, institutions and incentives, as well as the infrastructure and services needed to improve productivity. Yet the challenge still remains.

The authors thank the many individuals and organizations who contributed to the development and update of this research guide. First, we wish to thank the research teams in Zambia and Malawi, led by Gelson Tembo and Maxton Tsoka, respectively.

Their expertise and commitment to conduct high quality fieldwork was essential to turn the research guide intoactual fieldwork. Second, we are grateful to the community committees (CWACs), community leaders, and the households who generously gave their time to participate in the interviews. Third, we would like to recognize the logistical and technical support from Zambia's Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health (MCDMCH) and Malawi's Ministry of Gender, Community Services, Social Welfare and the Elderly, both at national and district levels. Moreover, we acknowledge as well the support from FAO and UNICEF in both countries. Agricultural policy and european integration in southeastern Europe 2014 / edited

The countries of the Southeastern European (SEE) region pronounced their intention to move towards integration with the European Union (EU) in order to create a stable, united, and more prosperous region. The EU integration process should foster political stability and socio-economic and sustainable development in the region. The SEE candidate and potential candidate countries, see the integration an oppartunity to enhance a peaceful development through economic, political and cultural co-operation within the region itself and with the EU member states. However, the EU integration process is a highly complex procedure, which involves the creation cf new institutions and the implementation of a range of policy reforms. Given the importance of the agricultural sector in the SEE countries in the economic development at national and regional level, it is essential that the reform process contribute to increasing ccmpetitiveness, enhancing regional trade and boosting the rehabilitation of focd chains. To successfully accomplish the reform process and ensure a smooth integration, it is important to develop solid networks and mechanisms for dialogue among policy makers and the research community across crucial policy areas.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) decided, in close cooperation with the Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group (SWG), to implement the project “Streamlining cf agriculture and rural development policées of SEE countries for EU accession” to facilitate the establishment of such networks and mechanisms. The purpose of the project is to strengthen cooperation among policy makers and the research community in order to create an effective policy making environment and to assist the integration process. This book constitutes one of the main results of the project; it is devoted to the analysis of agricultural and rural development policy of the SEE countries in view of their chosen future EU accession. It is a unique work in the region, which has been elabcrated in clcse cooperaticn between policy makers and the research institutions in the SEE countries. t s anticipated that it wilI prcvide a valuable input for policymaking as weIl as a sclid basis for future cooperation and continued dynamic dialogue between policymakers and the research institutions. It is the hope of the FAO and the SWG that efforts wilI be made ta maintain and enhance the constructive relatianships created among the policy makers and research institutions in arder ta develop a culture of well-informed and consistent policymaking in the future.

Domesticated animals contribute directly to the livelihoods of millions of people, including an estimated 70 percent of the world's rural poor. In 2007, through the adoption of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, the international community recognized the vital importance of the world's livestock biodiversità for agriculture, rural development and food and nutrition security. Eight years later, the conservation and sustainable management of animal genetic resources remains a vital and challenging task. The global livestock sector is continuously evolving, with new centres of growth emerging and rapid technological developments.

The challenges posed by population growth and climate change are ever more present.

The Second Report on the State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - another milestone in the work of FAO's Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - provides a comprehensive and updated assessment of current livestock biodiversity. It draws on information provided by 129 countries, 15 international organizations, 4 networks and regional focal points and inputs from 150 authors and reviewers. The preparation of The Second Report on the State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture offered an opportunity to review progress made in the implementation of the Global Plan of Action. It was a chance to re-evaluate the opportunities and challenges facing national authorities, livestock keepers, breeders and scientists and to identify future priorities for action. Many countries have made progress in the establishment of the policies, programmes and institutional frameworks needed to promote the sustainable management of livestock diversity. Many weaknesses still need to be addressed, particularly in developing countries. Smallholder and pastoralist production systems that are home to much of the world's livestock diversity continue to be under a range of pressures. A substantial proportion of the world's livestock breeds remain at risk of extinction. The characteristics of many of them have not been adequately studied, and this genetic wealth could be lost before it can be used for helping farmers, pastoralists and animal breeders to meet current and future production challenges. Knowledge gaps are still a major concern. Monitoring of trends in the size and structure of breed populations is often inadequate, which impedes the estimation of risk status. Threats have been broadly identified, but the detailed information that could be used to prioritize and plan action at the national level is often lacking. The priorities set out in the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources remain broadly relevant today. Many countries have prepared national strategies and action plans for animal genetic resources, or are in the process of doing so, as a means to translate the provisions of the Global Plan of Action into targeted activities at country level.

Nevertheless, constraints to implementation remain. The Global Plan of Action emphasizes the importance of international collaboration as a means of strengthening capacity in developing countries, and recognizes the need for substantial additional financial resources for animal genetic resource management. While there have been positive developments, both collaboration and the provision of funding still need to be strengthened.

In the past decade, significant progress has been made in the development of Rift Valley fever (RVF) vaccines, and several next-generation vaccines are currently being evaluated for registration. To assess the status of vaccination and diagnostic options available for animal and public health, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held an Ad hoc Workshop on the Current State of Rift Valley fever Vaccine and Diagnostics Development at FAO headquarters in Rome on 5-7 March 2014. Global experts in RVF vaccine development, world leading veterinary vaccine manufacturers, the chief veterinary officers from Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Senegal and Sudan, and representatives of key regional and global animal and human health agencies attended the meeting. Issues related to the application of classical vaccines in RVF-endemic areas were discussed, as well as safe and effective new combination and novel vaccines that may soon become available. The challenge now is to have these vaccines available at the right time and place. Participating subject matter experts made nine recommendations based on new research findings and recent disesase control experience in RVF-endemic countries and regions. These recommendations are meant to guide vaccine research and development, quality assessment and production, and to strengthen laboratory diagnostic capacity. The Technical Workshop presentations and recommendations represent another step forward in strengthening RVF control strategies worldwide.

The census of agriculture is one of the key pillars of a national statistical system, and in many developing countries it is often the only means of producing statistical information on the structure and other relevant aspects of the agriculture sector.

Moreover, it is the only data collection instrument that produces statistical information on farms at the lowest geographical level and therefore it is an essential source of information for governments and decision-makers in member countries. One of the most important elements of FAO's statistical work is the development and promotion of the decennial World Programme for the Census of Agriculture. Since the founding of FAO in 1945, it has supported countries to carry out their national agricultural censuses using standard international concepts, definitions and methodologies. The World Programme for the Census of Agriculture 2020 (WCA 2020) is the tenth decennial programme, and is expected to provide the basis for implementation of agricultural censuses in FAO member countries between 2016 and 2025. The use of these guidelines by member countries ensures that the census results are harmonized and internationally comparable, and allows countries to benchmark their performance against others. These guidelines are unique because they not only build on past experiences and lessons learned, but they also look forward and take the emerging data needs of users into consideration. They address requirements of both developed and developing countries, and provide the foundation for countries to develop an integrated census and survey programme, to use innovative and cost-effective methodologies, and ultimately to make better informed strategic decisions. In this publication, close linkages have been established with the “Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics”, in terms of contribution to the minimum set of core data and the establishment of master sampling frames. The increased importance of integrating agricultural statistics in national statistical systems is also underlined. In addition, the guidelines examine alternative census methodological approaches, and the growing use of innovative methods and information technologies for data collection, processing and dissemination. The WCA 2020 has been carefully reviewed by countries and key stakeholders, including internal users at FAO, external users in the regions and national and international experts on agricultural statistics. These reviews and consultations have provided critical feedback for development of the guidelines in terms of methodology and content. Consultation with member countries has been particularly important, and has helped to ensure that the guidelines are tailored to country needs. The WCA 2020 has been prepared by the Statistics Division of FAO, in collaboration with many other divisions and census experts from all over the world. The hope is that member countries will find that these guidelines provide a strong foundation for conducting their national censuses of agriculture, and that this harmonized approach will ultimately lead to improved understanding of the agricultural sector in the future.

Given increasing recognition of the role of forests in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security and poverty alleviation, sustainable forest management is more important than ever. But financing it remains a major challenge. Financing is about more than raising money. Broadening and diversifying the financial base for sustainable forest management involves, among other things, demonstrating the multiple benefits of forest investment; creating new revenue streams; establishing viable and lasting partnerships with other economic sectors; and strengthening the financial management capacity of forestry institutions. National forest funds (NFFs) have gained International attention in recent years for their potential role in financing sustainable forest management. Despite the presence of NFFs in more than 50 countries, however, limited information is available on how NFFs work, the experiences gained from their operation, and the lessons learned. Towards effective national forest funds addresses the need for more information on the way NFFs work and how best to establish and manage them. It shares the lessons that have emerged from the establishment and management of NFFs with the aim of supportino countries in designing and operating NFFs effectively according to their specific needs and circumstances. Based on a review of practical experiences, this publication outlines the general architecture and design elements of NFFs, as well as potential approaches and actions that could improve their performance.

Innovation is a driver for change and a way to turn challenges into opportunities and concrete improvements on the ground. This is also the case in the agricultural sector which is faced with a number of growing challenges – not only economic, but also environmental and social. We need to boost innovation throughout European agriculture and this is the reason why we launched a European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-AGRI) last year. The EIP-AGRI is fundamentally about bringing expertise from the worlds of farming and science together to learn from each other and develop ideas, knowledge and innovative actions together. It aims to build bridges between science and practice, in particular through practical innovation projects, bottom-up approaches, partnerships and networking activities. It is about growing an innovation culture in European farming that embraces the sector in all its diversity and which is not blind to the prospects that lie in traditional and practical knowledge. By integrating a wide range of competencies from farmers, researchers, advisors, NGOs and other innovation actors, this new kind of partnership can help generate new insights and co-ownership. It mobilises scientific and practical knowledge to foster innovation, improves speed of uptake of solutions by practitioners and helps to better target the research agenda towards practice needs. The organic sector is in many ways an agricultural frontrunner. Organic farming is a sector from which all farmers can learn, but it is certainly also in need of innovation and development. I am very pleased with the strong support we have received for the development of the EIP-AGRI, including from IFOAM EU, ARC 2020 and TP Organics. We are pleased with the strong commitment taken by the representatives of IFOAM EU and ARC 2020 in the High Level Steering Board, as well as their involvement in the Focus Groups of the EIP-AGRI. I also welcome the recent recognition of TP Organics as one of the European Technology Platforms. The platform has an important role to play in bringing practitioners and researchers together and identifying innovation goals for organic. With funding coming on tap in 2014 for operational groups under Rural Development and for multi-actor projects and thematic networks under Horizon 2020, I hope that the organic sector will continue its strong involvement in the EIP-AGRI and help make it a success.

Organic farming is based on the idea of an environmentally-friendly food production system with high animal welfare standards. Nevertheless, reality shows many problems in reaching these goals. There are many problems in animal health and welfare that remain unresolved and present a challenge for individual producers and the industry as a whole. These include: achieving balanced, 100%-organic, feed rations that produce adequate growth rates and high product quality, animalfriendly transport and slaughtering, sustainable use of local resources and, last but not least, profitability and efficient use of resources. Beside these internal issues organic farming is increasingly being asked to give answers to the main challenges facing humanity: food security and safety for an ever-increasing world population, climate change, increasing pressure on non-renewable resources (energy and crude fertilizer like rock phosphate), losses in agricultural and natural biodiversity and last but not least development of rural areas.

The first (1AOC) and second (2AOC) editions of the African Organic Conference were successfully hosted by Uganda and Zambia in 2009 and 2012, respectively. The third edition of the continental conference (3AOC) is holding in Nigeria October 5 - 9, 2015 with the theme “Achieving Social and Economic Development Through Ecological and Organic Agricultural Alternatives”. This conference is coming up in the continent when the call for need to improve rural livelihoods of Africans is becoming louder by the day.

A veritable tool through which the livelihood of an average African can be improved is Organic Agriculture because it has an inherent potential to reduce production costs regularly incurred by small-medium scale farmers (principal actors in African agriculture), reduce debts, increase income, mitigate the vagaries of climate change, cope with market fluctuations, sustain soil fertility, minimize health hazards etc. Little wonder, ecological organic agriculture (EOA) has been recognized as a catalyst to redress food crisis in the continent by mainstreaming ecological organic agriculture into the agricultural production systems of member states of the African Union Commission by year 2020 as directed by their Heads of States in January, 2011 on organic farming (EX.CL/Dec.621 XVI). Africa is the world's second largest continent after Asia and the world's second most populous with about 1.1b people corresponding to 15% of the world's total population.

According to the organic agriculture data on 170 countries worldwide, there were 43.1 million hectares of land under organic in 2013 in the world with Africa accounting for just 1.2 million hectares (3 %) and 29% of the entire producers in the world. Furthermore, the global market reached 72 billion US$ in 2013 with the United States of America and the European Union (EU) accounting for 43 and 40%, respectively. The question that readily comes to mind is where is Africa in the global picture of organic agriculture?. In deed Africa is gradually emerging as a potential continent that will soon embrace organic farming as a tool to tackle food insecurity. To this effect, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) is collaborating with relevant stakeholders in the African Organic sector, African Union Commission (AUC) and others in its framework of “Organic Alternative for Africa Initiative” aimed at facilitating the integration of organic agriculture into the core of African policies and the agricultural development agenda.
