Hi and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this performance of Cured.

Doug helps us to see the light and Kate’s sound design had us showering her with songs of praise.

This might sound odd as it is 1,013 miles from the Royal Court, but Lourdes is a Liverpool institution.

We owe a big thank you to our Director, Robert Softley Gale who has led with soft heart and a firm hand. It takes great skill to knit together so many talented people and he has done an amazing job.

Generations of scouse Catholics have been going over there by coach, ferry and aeroplane to get in touch with Our Lady and receive succour and comfort in the holy surroundings. When you go as a teenager though, it feels a bit more like Colomendy but with more nuns.

Laurence Clarke came to us with an initial script a few years ago now and we knew that it was a great idea. We’ve been through workshops and script in hand readings, plans and new plans.

The pandemic got in the way, as did all sorts of scheduling and funding blocks but Laurence’s brilliance and drive, and our belief in the script, didn’t waver. We are delighted with the final outcome, which you will be seeing shortly.

The casting process was a lot of fun and you will know Pauline and Ollie from their past work here, but there are Royal Court debuts for Sophia, Maisy, Naomi, JulieMac, Reece and Stephen.

We’ve loved having so many new faces around the place and you will definitely be seeing them again.

We are also very proud that this is the most accessible show that we have ever produced, with British Sign Language and Audio Description integrated into the show. That was only possible because of our co-producers Birds Of Paradise Theatre Company.

Working with them has been seamless, which you don’t often get to say in this business.

More thanks should be given to Arts Council England for providing extra funding where needed. The show was also developed with the support of Unlimited and the National Theatre’s Generate programme.

I think that I’ve given enough thanks to those on earth. Now it’s time to raise our hands to the sky and look to those above.

Doing The Lourdes Work Catherine Jones chats pilgrimage, miracles, and first loves with Cured playwright Laurence Clark

Laurence Clark was 13 when he was taken to Lourdes.

“It was like another world,” he recalls. “I did genuinely think it was going to be a holiday; I knew nothing about it. It was quite a culture shock.

“And it always stayed with me, this bizarre place that no one seems to talk about and yet hundreds of thousands of disabled people are taken every year. It almost seems like a rite of passage as a disabled person.”

Perhaps it’s unsurprising then that when he embarked on writing his first play it was that teenage experience which formed his initial inspiration.

The result is Cured, being premiered at the Royal Court before being staged in Coventry and Hull.

It’s 1,000 miles from Liverpool to Lourdes, and it’s been a long road too for Cured, a journey which has taken the best part of a decade since the comedian-turned-playwright penned his first draft while on the Everyman and Playhouse playwrights’ programme.

In the interim the play has been through three research and development phases, supported by Unlimited – which commissions work from disabled artists, the Arts Council and National Theatre, has weathered Covid lockdowns and has met the challenge of the additional funding needed to stage what is a fully-accessible production with audio description written (and rewritten) by Laurence and an integrated BSL signer as a character.

“With hindsight, I should have started with a two-hander or something a lot less complex, without all the captioning and audio description,” he admits. “But I was ambitious.”

Still, while waiting for Cured to reach the stage, and having decided to quit stand-up for writing, he’s certainly not been idle, undertaking screenwriting courses which have led to a pilot on Dave and scripts for children’s TV shows, and enjoying placements as a ‘storyliner’ on Hollyoaks and Corrie.

“I’ve actually managed to start a career as a writer,” the 52-yearold says. “But it really annoyed me that what I thought was one of the best things I’ve written was still just a file on my hard drive.

“So I have to pinch myself that it’s actually happening.”

Cured centres on Connor, a young disabled Scouser who embarks on a pilgrimage to Lourdes with the hope of losing his virginity.

But while his own visit to the French shrine was the starting point, the plot owes more to Laurence’s imagination, along with the stories of disabled people he spoke to as part of his research,

many of whom remembered fondly the excitement of being away from home together for the first time.

Then there was his wife’s experience while visiting the spring where St Bernadette witnessed her visions.

Laurence explains: “At the time she used crutches, but her mum took her in a wheelchair. So, she went into the water from her wheelchair but then, because she could walk, she walked out and saw all these faces of people misinterpreting what they’d seen.

“That gave me an idea that this is a place where people are expecting a miracle, and they’re going to be looking out for it, which is very much central to this.”

“And something else,” he adds. “When I was doing the R&D I did meet one person who lost their virginity on the train to Lourdes.

So again, I thought, well it’s not that far-fetched!”

Lourdes is also a rite of passage for Liverpudlian Catholics, and for many of them it’s a very spiritual experience.

“I think it reflects a wide range of experiences,” he says of Cured.

“It can’t just be ‘no one gets cured, this is a load of b*llocks’.

Because those are easy laughs and hopefully this doesn’t…there

is some of that in there, but there’s a whole lot more, and the pilgrims in the play are all going for very different reasons.

“There are some disabled people I know that go and get a lot out of it, and I wanted to reflect that.”

I have to pinch myself that it’s actually happening Laurence Clark Salford-born Laurence may not have gone to Lourdes in pursuit of love, but it turns out that’s exactly how he ended up in Liverpool, following a girl he fancied to university.

“Yes, that’s absolutely true,” he laughs. “And you know what? It was someone called Rose. She had the same name (as Connor’s love interest in Cured). It’s funny how you write subconscious bits of your experiences.”

While he always planned to move on, 34 years later he’s still here - with wife, family and career, and now his debut play. So, what does he hope audiences will take away from it?

“I hope they’ll say it’s the funniest play they’ve seen, at least in the last 12 months!” he grins. “Yes, it’s a play with some disabled characters in it, yes there are issues discussed, but primarily it’s a piece of comedy theatre and it never loses sight of that.”

Cast Biographies Sophia Adzoa-Moore Helen

Sophia Adzoa-Moore is a disabled performer who graduated from Performance Preparation Academy in Guildford with a degree in Musical Theatre in 2024.

She made her stage debut at the Cliffs Pavilion Southend aged 7, then performed in numerous amateur and professional shows, before making her West End debut aged 10 in Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

Sophia became disabled at the age of 13 which, like her character Helen, she found very difficult at first. However she taught herself how to dance and perform on crutches, culminating in successfully auditioning for musical theatre college, PPA, where her credits during training include Mr Mistoffelees in Cats, Dance Captain in Little Shop of Horrors and Kiki in Flashdance.

Since graduating, some of Sophia’s credits include: Jo Tibbs in The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde (Film, directed by Kenneth Branagh, 2024), Dancer for Caity Baser (Paralympics Homecoming Ceremony, Birmingham Arena, 2024) and Ensemble in Little Piece Of You: an atypical musical (Theatre Royal Drury Lane, 2024).

Throughout 2025, Sophia used her social media platforms to show her journey as a disabled performer. She now has many videos with over 2 million views and more than 85,000 followers.

You can find her on both Instagram and TikTok: @sophia.adzoa.moore Sophia is looking forward to be platforming disabled stories, and feels particularly connected to Helen’s story as it bears many similarities to her own. She is also looking forward to putting her 15 years at church schools to good use!

Pauline Daniels Sister Mary

Pauline is celebrating her 46th year in the business this year and has never been so busy. She started her career as a singer and then became Merseyside’s Queen of Comedy, before starting a legitimate career in the theatre as Mama Morton in Chicago at the Liverpool Playhouse, which led to many roles in all of Liverpool theatres and many others around the country, including playing Faye Bogle in the West End, a parody of Mae West with “her” W C Fields played by Barry Cryer, in a musical called A Saint She Aint, many other musicals followed including Gypsy, as Mama Rose, Mrs Kay in Our Day Out, Fiddler on the Roof, as part of the Everyman rebirth of the rep company and in 2018, Calendar Girls in an 18th month tour, which obviously had a cast of women of a certain age with three hormones between them.

In 2021, whilst contemplating maybe retiring, she had the chance to return to the Royal Court in a musical based on a local bakery called Homebaked and it fired up her passion once again.

TV credits are far too many to mention and sadly rather than bore you readers to death she’s also leaving out many of her theatre credits too. 46 years is a long time but in all of that time it would be remiss of her to miss out her favourite role of all time, which she played at The Everyman, The Playhouse and the Royal Court, Willy Russell’s wonderful Shirley Valentine. Amongst her telly credits which do include Brookside, Blue Murder and many variety performances including Wogan, she played a nosy neighbour in an episode of Emmerdale last year. She was never in the Bill! Pauline was really proud to have been part of the Everyman’s Twelfth Night playing Maria to Matthew Kelly’s Sir Toby, when the theatre reopened.

She now spends many happy days sailing the seven seas in her more familiar role as one of the hardest working stand-up comics in the country and is enjoying every minute, but she is so pleased to be back home and being a part of this wonderful cast in a brand new play at the Royal Court, and who would ever believe she was a nun, although she did do an episode of Songs of Praise…yes she did, when she was a presenter at Radio Merseyside in 1996.

She wrote her autobiography in 2010 and you can probably get it for a pound in a bargain bucket somewhere in the world.

Maisy Gordon Rose

Maisy Gordon is a disabled artist from Liverpool whose work centres on disability activism in theatre. She got her start at Rare Studio Liverpool. While she was there she gained a place at Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse’s Young Playwrights Programme.

It was there that she wrote her first play, Space Invaders X LIAR, performed at the Unity Theatre, Liverpool.

In 2021 Maisy co-founded Knowsley based Tip Tray Theatre, a disabled led arts organisation dedicated to working with emerging and disabled artists to make space, make theatre and make change. With Tip Tray, she has lead on projects such as 24,000 Hours, To Be Confirmed and I Am Steven Gerrard, which was performed at The Hope Street Theatre, Liverpool’s Royal Court Studio and The Epstein Theatre. She also produced and hosted a local writing festival from 2023-2025 called What Happens Next?

Maisy made her professional acting debut in 20 Stories High and Graeae Theatre Company’s award winning show High Times and Dirty Monsters, and later co-created The Access Manifesto, a guide to creating a more accessible arts industry for young disabled people.

Maisy is thrilled to be a part of Cured at Liverpool’s Royal Court, and is excited to share a brilliant disabled story on one of Liverpool’s most famous stages.

Naomi Gray

Saint Bernadette Naomi’s first professional acting job was aged 16 after a childhood of singing, dancing and acting in any club or show she could get involved in!

In 2007 she enrolled on the BSL Interpreting degree at the University of Wolverhampton; immersing herself in deaf culture, history and language. Once fully qualified as an interpreter, in her 30s she decided to also get some formal acting training under her belt, achieving a 1st class degree on the Acting BA Hons at Fourth Monkey drama school, London, in 2022.

Naomi is thrilled to be part of the cast of Cured, playing Saint Bernadette, bringing deaf access to the entire run of the show.

JulieMac God

Born in Birkenhead and a regular artist at DaDa Festival in Liverpool, JulieMac is a familiar face in Disability Arts UK. She has worked as an actor and theatre maker since 1990 Banner Theatre (Little Red Mole…); the Bluecoat (The Knitting Circle, Let Me Stay); Unity Theatre (Pig Tales, Crossings, The Butch Monologues); and many more. Recent acting credits include Red Ellen, Rising in Our Power (Little Cog; IN/Visible Women 2024); Jacqui, Pride and Protest (BBC Radio 4, 2022) and Quiet Rebels (Dervish/ Vital Xposure, co-written with Hassan Mahamdallie, UK tour 2022).

JulieMac is an award winning playwright, documentary and theatre maker. Her work has been produced on international stages, earning a South Bank Show Award, ITV 2010; Writers Award, DaDaFest/ ITV 2009; Picture This...International Disability Film Fest, Performance Award, 2017; Picture This...Best Documentary, and Best of the Festival, 2018.

She is co-founder and former Artistic Director of Vital Xposure, one of UK’s leading disability-led touring theatre companies in Arts Council England’s national portfolio.

This is her first time working with Liverpool’s Royal Court and Birds of Paradise Theatre Company.

Reese Pantry Connor

Reece Pantry is an actor from North West London. He was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of 4. After making his acting debut at the age of 15 in CBBC drama Desperados, he pursued other interests, before returning to the craft a decade later.

Reece has first-hand experience of Lourdes, having gone with a charity on two occasions. Reece trained at Drama Studio London.

His credits include: Television: Billy in Then Barbara Met Alan (BBC/Netflix), and Sam in Testament (Angel Studios).

Stephen Smith-Taylor Callum

Stephen Smith-Taylor is appearing in Cured. Previous credits include Sunshine Spa (A Play, a Pie and a Pint at Òran Mór, Glasgow). Known for sharp humour and a proudly queer perspective, he is delighted to be part of this production and to portray Callum.

Company Biographies Laurence Clark Writer Laurence Clark is a screenwriter, playwright and award‑winning comedian whose work spans television, theatre and radio.

He won the UKTV Triforce Writerslam, leading to his comedy pilot Perfect being broadcast on Dave in 2022. His CBBC screenwriting credits include Odd Squad, Andy and the Band and the sci‑fi series Gifted, for which he adapted Episode 3 and wrote Episode 8. His new play Cured tours nationally in May June 2026 following support from Unlimited and the National Theatre’s Generate programme.

Laurence is also in demand as a Disability Editorial Advisor, contributing to Half Man (BBC/HBO), Mandy S4 (BBC), Pushers (Merman/Channel 4) and The Responder S2 (BBC).

He chaired the BAFTA‑winning organisation TripleC DANC and nowadays works for them. He is a core group member and the Access Roles project co-lead for the TV Access Project, a coalition driving improved access and inclusion across the UK screen industries.

Robert Softley Gale Director Robert Softley Gale is Artistic Director and CEO of Birds of Paradise Theatre Company (BOP), Scotland’s leading professional theatre company making work by and for disabled artists. He has been at the helm of BOP since 2012, directing productions that have toured nationally and internationally, including My Left/Right Foot – The Musical (Edinburgh Fringe First and Herald Angel, subsequently touring to Japan), Wendy Hoose and Purposeless Movements, for which he received a CATS Best Director nomination.

As a performer, his solo show If These Spasms Could Speak toured to Brazil, Estonia, Ireland and India, and his BBC monologue Hamish received BAFTA and Royal Television Society nominations.

His freelance directing credits include Traverse Theatre, Macrobert Arts Centre, where he’ll direct their 2026 pantomine.

In 2025, Robert received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Glasgow in recognition of his contribution to theatre.

Olivia du Monceau | Collective Set and Costume Designer Olivia du Monceau | Collective is a North West-based scenography collective creating design for performance, installation and live events.

Cured is led by Olivia du Monceau, whose design career has spanned collaborations with theatres and producing organisations across the UK, including Salisbury Playhouse, HOME, Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, New Vic Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse, Southwark Playhouse, Bolton Octagon and multiple productions with the Liverpool Royal Court.

Alongside theatre, Olivia’s work extends across live events, exhibitions and public art installations, collaborating with organisations including dreamthinkspeak, Wild in Art, Homotopia, B3 Media, Culture Liverpool and the Liverpool Biennial.

Doug Kuhrt Lighting Designer Doug is delighted to return to Liverpool’s Royal Court, having previously lit Come Together, Making It, Bingo Star and Netherley Hillbillies.

He has been lighting shows for over 30 years. Jamie Jenkin Video Designer Jamie is the in-house graphic and video designer at Liverpool’s Royal Court. Starting as marketing assistant at the theatre in 2005, he has been part of the Royal Court since it’s rebirth as a theatre in 2006. He now designs artwork for all Royal Court productions alongside working on video content for the Royal Court stage and beyond.

Eden Easterbrook Costume Supervisor Eden is a recent LIPA Theatre and Performance Design graduate, specialising in costume. Based in the North West, her work covers supervising, design, and wardrobe. Eden frequently works with the Liverpool Everyman and Liverpool’s Royal Court, where her credits include costume supervising The Anfield Apocalypse and Cured, and assistant costume supervising last year’s productions of The Legend of Rooney’s Ring and Red or Dead.
