Dear Friends,

It has been a gratifying experience to serve as the Institute’s Acting Director this year while Mark Katz was away on research leave. My office has been in Hyde Hall ever since I left South Building in 2008, but this year I have been more than an observer of the daily and weekly activity in Hyde Hall. I have been in the middle of it.

I am writing as my tenure as chair of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities Advisory Board comes to an end. It has been an amazing two years of learning, collaborating, and doing. I have been on the board since 2006, but assumed the role of chair in 2015 from the esteemed Julia Sprunt Grumbles and followed in the footsteps of several other university leaders. I began my term just as our new director, Mark Katz, was finishing his first year, and we were creating our bylaws that formalized term limits, succession planning, and future board participation for the chair.

I am particularly grateful to the Institute Advisory Board and its chair, Caroline Williamson, whose idea it was for me to assume the acting directorship. This board is a pillar of strong support for the Institute, and their advice and counsel is critical to our success.

Our organization is very well served by a talented and dedicated staff. I have enjoyed getting to know them on an individual basis and seeing up close not only their professionalism, but also the wonderful way they support each other and work collaboratively. Tommie Watson, Director of Operations, built this team and continues to develop and lead the staff. They played a crucial role in helping the Institute refine its mission and vision for the future.

As important as the staff, the faculty remains the main source of leadership at the Institute. We have great faculty directing our core programs: Faculty Fellows and Academic Leadership programs, our two highly competitive fellowships, as well as our programs for new faculty, recently tenured associate professors, the Chairs Leadership Program, and our newest program for retired faculty. New fellows are chosen each year by the Faculty Advisory Board, which also advises the director in other matters as needed.

In this year-end report, you will read about all the highlights, but I would like to focus on just a few that have been particularly meaningful to me. One of the things I did not anticipate was the increasingly important role that the Institute plays in faculty retention and commitment in the College of Arts and Sciences. As a top public university, our faculty are often approached with offers from other competitive schools. In the last three years, the Institute has seen a 91% success rate in retention cases in which we have participated. Most of that work happens behind the scenes, and when we are successful, that faculty member stays at Carolina, and continues to be a highly productive scholar and a great professor. Among our fellows, we enjoy a commitment to Carolina of 98% in the past three years. Our fellowships are truly helping to keep our best faculty.

My happiest moment this year was when I had the opportunity to write to 20 faculty members informing them they had been awarded a $3,000 Schwab Academic Excellence Award. The Schwab Academic Excellence Award, endowed by advisory board member and former trustee Nelson Schwab III, allows 20 department chairs in the arts, humanities and qualitative social sciences to designate a faculty member to receive this $3,000 award to support that person’s scholarship and creative pursuits. The award is intended to support outstanding faculty work and function as an early intervening retention tool for departments to use at their discretion. You can read the names of this year’s recipients and some statements of their appreciation (page 15).

We have also updated the look and feel of the IAH brand to align with the University’s. You will notice these changes in this edition of the Annual Highlights and the new website we launched in April. I am pleased by how well organized the new website is across all digital platforms.

For me, this year is ending all too fast. I have loved being the Acting Director for the Institute. Thanks to everyone who has made this year so enjoyable. This fall, we welcome Mark Katz back as director, after a year of intensive research and travel related to his grants and work on two books. I look forward to participating in the Retired Faculty Program and to the publication of my major addresses as UNC Chancellor through UNC Press. Next year promises to be an exciting year for the University and for the Institute. I can’t wait to see it unfold.

Mark Katz and I began our time together with a strategic planning session provided by board member Sandy Cockrell, and his team at Deloitte. We reviewed all the Institute has been able to accomplish over its 30-year history, we evaluated how we could make an impact as individuals, we decided where we could highlight the Institute’s work on campus, and what we wanted to improve within the organization. It has been an invaluable tool for us to use as both a roadmap and a personal report card.

One of my goals has been to further the reach of the Institute and its programs in supporting the College of Arts and Science and, by extension, the university. I met with several deans throughout campus about possible partnerships. As a result, the Institute has supported a Faculty Fellow from the Law School and and will soon host a fellow from the Kenan-Flagler School of Business. We also combined with the Honors Carolina Board to meet with honors students, learn the mission of each other’s boards and, of course, socialize. One outcome of our discussions is that we are using our Friday Fund as a joint board collaboration to pair honors students with our Fellows to serve as their research associates.

Chancellor Carol Folt is gathering leaders at Hyde Hall, bringing more awareness about our work. A mentoring reception for Morehead-Cain Scholars with our current Fellows, started by Robert Hackney and Shauna Holiman, creates interactions between students and faculty outside the traditional classroom. We also piloted the IAH Honors Carolina Collaboration Grant with the generous support of the William C. Friday Leadership Fund.

At the leadership level, I participated in a panel discussion with other institutes within the college on a range of topics, from board development and engagement to fundraising. At this meeting, we distributed our board packet dashboard to several participants, who were impressed and wanted to use them as a template for their boards. A special thanks to Tommie Watson for updating our metrics so we can track our progress and learn from our initiatives.

I have given my time and resources to the Institute, and will continue to do so after I rotate off my position as chair, because I love that the collaborative spirit that began around the table at West House 30 years ago during those first Fellows’ Friday bag lunches continues in new ways today at Hyde Hall. Our organization stays true to its original mission by providing a semester-long leave to faculty to work on their scholarship, opening up new ways to mentor, host, and collaborate to make the Institute great and ultimately commit the best faculty to Carolina. Our work has an impact on the future.

Chancellor Folt often calls the Institute a jewel in the University’s crown, and as I pass the leadership torch to Nelson Schwab III, I can’t wait to see what we do to set the stage for the next 30 years.

FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS Faculty Fellowships offer Carolina faculty members a unique opportunity: a semester-long, on-campus fellowship to work on projects for publication, exhibition, composition, or performance.

IAH Fellowships are a key part of the College of Arts and Sciences’ efforts to retain the best faculty at Carolina. The fellowship centers on a weekly three-hour seminar and meal at Hyde Hall, where Fellows exchange ideas with seven to 10 peers from various disciplines. The fellowship allows the Fellow a full semester to pursue a project that ultimately enriches his or her research and teaching.

Once appointed, Fellows join an expanding community of artists and scholars who receive ongoing support from their

new network of colleagues. The Institute provides proposal assistance to help Fellows attract outside funding and summer fellowships, and we support conferences, lectures, workshops, exhibits, and performances.

Through IAH Fellowships, faculty at all ranks pursue projects vitally related to the arts, humanities, or qualitative social sciences. In each group of Fellows, we support a blend of ranks and disciplines.

In a climate of diminished resources, increased teaching loads, and high expectations for publications, the Faculty Fellowship provides the invaluable gift of time for faculty to reinvigorate their scholarship.

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FELLOWSHIPS

The Institute for the Arts and Humanities helps prepare and support current and emerging academic leaders through our Academic Leadership Program (ALP). Eight Fellows are selected annually to engage in a series of activities to help them develop leadership skills, clarify their career commitments, build a leadership network within the campus, and extend their contacts to other leaders beyond the University. Because the ALP requires a significant time commitment, a flexible use stipend of $5,000 is provided for each participant.

Fellowship Year:

• A week of leadership training with the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C., one of the world’s most respected leadership development organizations. Fellows participate in CCL programs with senior executives from the military, government, business and the not-for-profit sector.

• Semester-long weekly seminars in the spring in which faculty discuss critical issues facing the University and formulate possible responses • Opportunities to meet with senior leaders inside and outside the University • One overnight retreat and one full-day retreat focused on career development, leadership skill assessment and the creation of a personal vision

Post Fellowship:

After the Fellowship year, Fellows receive opportunities to: • Participate with their colleagues in a continuing monthly Leadership Forum • Attend additional workshops, short courses and seminars on advanced topics in academic leadership • Attend conferences and workshops on topics of concern to faculty and the University • Meet with University and state leaders to discuss important issues facing the University

Eligibility:

Academic Leadership Fellows must be tenured faculty or fixed term faculty members. Fixed term faculty must have at least seven years of service at UNC in a primarily instructional role. Applicants must submit applications during the fall semester.

All applicants are required to submit both an application and receive two recommendations.

Chairs Leadership Program Director

Department of Communication Professor Bill Balthrop joined the IAH team at the genesis of the initiative in 2008. As of June 30, he steps down from his position as Chairs Leadership Program Director.

FACULTY PROGRAMS In addition to our fellowships, the Institute supports programs for faculty at every stage of their career. We begin from the moment new faculty arrive for their first semester, through the tenure process, networking, research, leadership opportunities, and retirement. IAH programs support Carolina scholars and artists because we believe that our faculty are crucial to the university’s success.

New Faculty Program

Program Director: Associate Professor Mai Nguyen, City and Regional Planning The New Faculty Program is designed to introduce newly-arrived arts and humanities faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences to interdisciplinary and mentoring networks at the university.

The program engages a cohort of faculty through professional and social events throughout the academic year. It is open to full-time faculty at all ranks who are within their first three years of appointment at Carolina. The majority of participants are Assistant Professors.

Associate Professor Program

Program Director: Morehead-Cain Alumni Distinguished Professor Geoff Sayre-McCord, Philosophy When faculty earn tenure, they are promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor. Across disciplines, newly tenured professors face unique professional and personal challenges. This program is designed to support them as they enter this period of their career. The Associate Professor Program is co-sponsored by the Institute and the College of Arts and Sciences. All College faculty are invited to participate in the program in the first year following their promotion to associate professor.

The program events provide time and space for participants to forge connections beyond their departments and to discuss professional and academic issues of common interest. Discussions focus on topics such as: sustaining work-life balance at mid-career, managing increased expectations and opportunities for university service, developing leadership and negotiating skills, preparing for promotion to full professor, and positioning oneself in the academy as an established scholar.

Chairs Leadership Program

Program Director: Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor Peter Mucha, Mathematics Modeled on the Academic Leadership Program (ALP), the Chairs Leadership Program (CLP) offers newly appointed and re-appointed chairs a year of monthly confidential conversations in which they can identify best practices, and explore issues related to the important roles they play within the university. Topics for discussion may include the chair’s role in mentoring and evaluating new faculty, developing incentives, and rewards for faculty productivity, strategic leadership, and departmental goal setting, dealing with difficult interactions, developing new departmental resources, and encouraging a collegial climate.

The CLP incorporates a mentoring component by including in each class a mix of returning and newly appointed chairs. All newly appointed or reappointed chairs in the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible to participate in the year of their appointment or reappointment. IAH Senior Leadership Consultant Rob Kramer helps facilitate the program.

Retired Faculty Program

“The departmental chair’s position is one of the most critical academic leadership positions in the College,” says Balthrop. “It’s a critical, and very stressful, position” agrees Mark Katz, IAH Director and former chair of the Department of Music. “That’s why the CLP is so important—it is both a place of refuge and a great source of wisdom and best practices. Bill deserves so much credit for helping to create this lifeline for Carolina’s chairs. We owe him a great deal.”

Balthrop also served as interim Director of the Institute in 2010 and hosted the ambitious and important “A Symposium on Faculty Innovation” at Hyde Hall that year.

This summer Balthrop is in Europe conducting research into memorials.

“I am currently working broadly at the intersection of rhetorical and cultural practices. I am working on an analysis of the rhetorical functions performed by the American memorials and monuments constructed in Europe following World War I and World War II.” Balthrop’s legacy in starting and maintaining the Chairs Leadership Program continues as Peter Mucha assumes the role this year.

“An ongoing, professional network, in which knowledge and experience can be shared with candor, is an important additional support system for new and continuing chairs,” explains Balthrop. “That place of safety to address issues they can’t talk about anywhere else is what makes the program most useful for them.”

Chairs Leadership Program Director

Beginning July 1, Peter Mucha begins his work as the Chairs Leadership Program (CLP) Director.

He succeeds Bill Balthrop, who was the founding chair of the program.

Mucha, the Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor in Mathematics, came to UNC in 2005.

“When Mark Katz asked me if I would be willing to be CLP Director, it was immediately an exciting opportunity for me,” said Mucha.

He has varied experience in leadership roles. He served as chair of the Mathematics Department in 2010. He joined CLP as a new chair when Balthrop was the director. In 2012, he was appointed founding chair of the Applied Physical Sciences Department in 2015.

IAH Director Mark Katz says that Mucha’s experience in the role of chair at both an established department and an emerging interdisciplinary department have served him well.

This program is a collaboration between the UNC Retired Faculty Association and the Institute. Both organizations are committed to the vitality and well-being of the UNC faculty.

Mucha said he was inspired by Bill Balthrop when he participated in the program back in 2010.

Recognizing retirement as a life-shaping event, the purpose of this program is to contribute to the process of deliberation of faculty members entering retirement as a new stage of life. This includes service, research, leadership, and mentorship.

Preparation for retirement is particularly challenging for members of the academy who have spent many years in a position of research, teaching and leadership in the university and larger community. Preserving and advancing the knowledge gathered during an academic career in the post-retirement lifetime requires not only a thoughtful examination of personal retirement issues, but also consideration of how this knowledge might have impact.

“He has served as a leader and has broad experience to share,” said Katz.

“Bill Balthrop talked about how the department chair is one of the most essential position in the College of Arts and Sciences,” said Mucha.

According to Mucha, since the faculty see the chair as an administrator and the administration views chairs as more aligned with the faculty, the Institute’s CLP is crucial. At Hyde Hall, the program is creating community among chairs. Bringing in more senior chairs to the program is part of that effort.

“Who else on campus is dealing with that? It is potentially a very lonely position. For most it’s their first academic leadership role.”

Mucha will facilitate the program alongside Rob Kramer, who has served as Senior Leadership Consultant for the Institute. Kramer also facilitates the Academic Leadership Program with ALP Director Suzanne Gulledge.

“I am so thrilled to be part of the IAH team,” said Mucha.

2017 Reckford Lecture:

“Music emancipates you from the tyranny of time.”

American Symphony Orchestra Conductor and Bard College President Leon Botstein delivered the 23rd Annual Mary Stevens Reckford Memorial Lecture in European Studies entitled, “Sounding Forms: What Music and Its Practice Reveals About Modern European History.” The lecture examined the aesthetics of music from the 19th century through 1945.

Acting Director James Moeser welcomed the audience. Executive Director for the Arts Emil Kang introduced Botstein by discussing his work as a conductor, referring to him as “maestro.”

Botstein began by noting, “I don’t normally do this sort of thing, but I was attracted to the lecture’s mission of pleasure in an academic talk,” a request from the endowment that the lecture provide “pleasure, instruction, an interdisciplinary approach and a sense of shared humanity.”

He discussed, “in the 1830s after the fall of Napoleon, modernizing the piano changed music literacy.”

Reckford 2018 Lecture:

About Mary Stevens Reckford The Institute hosts the annual Mary Stevens Reckford Memorial Lecture in European Studies, established in 1990 by UNC Classics Professor Kenneth J. Reckford to honor his wife, Mary Stevens Reckford (February 25, 1934 – November 12, 1987).

The lecture is designed to appeal to the public, rather than specialists. Speakers are asked to provide “pleasure, instruction, an interdisciplinary approach and a sense of shared humanity.” Because Mary Reckford’s birthday is Feb. 25, the Institute hosts the lecture within the month of February.

A graduate of Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Mary Reckford took graduate courses at UNC through the Evening College (now known as The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education) for five years, studying such topics as Renaissance intellectual history, St. Augustine, sixteenth-century English literature, Arthurian literature, the Mediterranean world in the sixteenth century, and the history of science from the late-medieval period through the eighteenth century. She was mother to the Reckford’s five children, Rachel, Joseph, Jonathan, Sam and Sarah.

North Carolina’s Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II will deliver the 2017 Weil Lecture The Institute for the Arts and Humanities announces that Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II will deliver the 2017 Weil Lecture on American Citizenship, Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at Moeser Auditorium in Hill Hall.

Barber is the pastor at Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro. He has served as president of the North Carolina National Association of Advancement for Colored People (NC NAACP) and sits on the national board of the organization. Barber is most recently well known as the architect of the Moral Mondays Movement, a weekly protest of the state legislature in Raleigh. He announced in May that he would step down from his role at the NC NAACP to begin the national Poor People’s Campaign.

“As one of the great figures in American public life today, Rev. Barber is an ideal person to deliver the lecture,” said Mark Katz, IAH Director. “We are honored and delighted that he will be in our midst come October.”

Barber graduated from North Carolina Central University (NCCU), receiving a B.A. in Political Science. He received a Master of

Divinity degree from Duke University, and he was a Benjamin Mays Fellow and a Dean scholar. Barber has a Doctoral degree from Drew University in Madison, N.J., with a concentration in Public Policy and Pastoral Care, and he has received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from NCCU. The Honorable Governor Beverly Purdue presented Dr. Barber with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest citizenship award presented to outstanding North Carolinians who have a proven record of service to the state.

Activist and author Dr. Cornel West, the 1993 Weil Lecturer, has said of Barber that he is “the closest person we have to Martin Luther King in our midst.”

The lecture will be held Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 5:30 p.m., followed immediately by a Q&A session.

The Weil Lecture is a biennial series sponsored by the Weil Family since 1915.

The first lecture was by former president William H. Taft after he finished his term but before he served on the U.S. Supreme Court. Other notable lecturers include Jon Huntsman, Jimmy Carter and Eleanor Roosevelt. The 2015 lecturer was U.S. Congressman Barney Frank.

The Institute is thrilled to announce Zia Haider Rahman, author of the highly acclaimed 2014 novel In Light of What We Know, will deliver the 2018 Mary Stevens Reckford Memorial Lecture in European Studies.

Rahman is Bangladesh-born but raised and educated in Great Britain. He currently holds the Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University and the Director’s Visitorship at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

He graduated from Oxford and also studied at Cambridge and Yale. He worked as an investment banker for Goldman Sachs before practicing as a corporate lawyer and then as an international human rights lawyer. He has also worked as an anti-corruption activist.

The lecture will be held February 22, 2018 at Hyde Hall.

In his 24 years at Carolina, McGowan authored and edited dozens of works on philosophy, political theory, and literary studies. He is a founding and active member of UNC’s Program in Cultural Studies, was the first Director of the Graduate School’s Royster Society of Fellows, and in 2015 he received the Graduate Mentoring Award. His involvement with the IAH has included the genesis of the organization.”

“I got involved in the IAH almost the day I arrived on campus, said McGowan. “I got pulled into West House within two weeks. [IAH Founder and professor] Ruel Tyson had gathered this intellectual community and created the organization.

“I know John McGowan—a renowned scholar of literary and political theory—best through his role as the second Director of the IAH, and my predecessor,” said IAH Director Mark Katz, who is on research leave. “In his eight years at the IAH he worked tirelessly to promote the scholarship and welfare of Carolina’s faculty, whether through funding research and collaboration, creating programs to attend to the needs of professors at different stages of their careers, or simply engaging in enthusiastic intellectual conversation with whomever came through Hyde Hall. With this award we recognize how deeply the IAH, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University are in his debt.”

The IAH began granting the biennial award in 2008. George Johnson is one of the Institute’s greatest ambassadors, and the IAH created this award to honor George while at the same time recognizing exemplary contributions by faculty in the arts, humanities and qualitative social sciences. McGowan says his latest class last semester — on the Iliad, Sophocles, Oedipus Rex, among others — is an example of the joy of teaching UNC students. Students of different disciplines contributed greatly to the class. “We have these astounding students and there’s moments every day when you see the light bulb go on, and a student gets excited about something.”

Food and the Humanities Series “When we think about trying to address food insecurity and hunger, we often think about donations...but actually only about five percent of the food assistance comes from those... programs, and over 95% comes from federal nutrition assistance programs,” said PhD student Jessica Soldavini, speaking at “Food Insecurity in the Triangle,” a panel hosted by the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at Hyde Hall on Dec. 8.

“Linguistics shapes language, which shapes message,” said Georgia State Rep. Park Cannon (’14), the youngest legislator in Georgia history and the first queer woman of color to hold office in that state.

The Institute continues efforts on a national issue, the lack of diversity among faculty ranks, particularly in the full professorship.

Cannon, a Carolina alum with a double major in Gender and Women’s Studies and Linguistics, spoke as part of a two-part series on the humanities and public life in 2016. At the Nov. 17 event, Cannon fielded questions from her former professors, Faculty Fellows Michele Berger (Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies) and Misha Becker (Professor, Linguistics). The event then opened to questions from an audience comprised mostly of students.

IAH Associate Director Jennifer Ho, Communications Specialist M. Clay, and former graduate assistant Paula Mukherjee spearheaded the idea to gather Women of Color and Indigenous women.

Earlier that year, Congressman David Price (’61), who has represented the UNC community for 40 years in the house of representatives, talked about how the humanities changed his life.

The Morehead Scholar explained that even as STEM disciplines are trending lately, “there is inherent value of our own understanding of our history.”

The Oct. 6 public talk was facilitated by acting IAH Director UNC Chancellor Emeritus James Moeser.

Both Price and Cannon spoke to students about how to become involved, how to find their voice, and reminded them that they too could run for office in their communities. “Consider running for office,” said Cannon. “Use your networks to raise funding.”

“Of the full professors in the College of Arts and Sciences, I am the 13th,” according to Ho. The Institute hosted two events, an opening reception on Sept. 14, 2016 that drew over 50 women, followed by a panel discussion on mentorship and career guidance on Jan. 24.

Malinda Maynor Lowery, Associate Professor in History and director of the Center for the Study of the American South, participated in the panel. She told her story as a member of the Lumbee tribe who obtained her PhD at Carolina and then went on to become a faculty member.

One of the barriers facing faculty of color and indigenous faculty are overwhelming demands for service on committees. Because there are so few diverse voices, the faculty who represent diverse groups are called upon even more.

This interferes with scholarship and even teaching.

She was joined by Dramatic Art Professor Kathy Perkins who offered that while service commitments are daunting, “we have to do it. Our numbers are so small and we have an opportunity to make a difference.”

Associate Professor Michele Berger, who is also the Faculty Fellowship Program Director, discussed how mentoring is a vehicle to personal and professional growth. And mentorship is a two-way street.

“We need to look at mentorship across ranks,” said Berger.

This means looking at “not just post-doc and pre-tenure, but also post-tenure. We can lean on national peers for support as well.”

Soldavini spoke on behalf of No Kid Hungry North Carolina, an initiative within the larger Share Our Strength program. The organization’s efforts focus on expanding access to federal nutrition programs that already exist but are underutilized.

The discussion was the final event in the Institute’s “Food and the Humanities” series, and included three panelists from organizations in the Triangle all working to eradicate food security. Dr. Alice Ammerman, moderator and Director for the Center for Health Promotion and Disease prevention, uses the term “to describe a situation where an individual or a family [doesn’t] have reliable access to an adequate quantity of affordable, nutritious food.”

The panel also included George Barret, Associate Director at the Jackson Center; and Tiffany Turner, Bonner Leader Intern at TABLE. Each panelist presented an overview of the different ways in which their respective organizations address hunger and food insecurity. While their models differ, each are making meaningful strides toward minimizing the number of people who are food insecure within the region.

George Barret, a 2013 UNC graduate, coordinates a program called “Heavenly Groceries.”

The program is run through the Jackson Center located in Chapel Hill’s historically-black

Northside Community (an area composed of the neighborhoods between Rosemary, Carver, Columbia, and Lloyd streets).

One unique aspect of the model at Heavenly Groceries is the way it presents the donated food on shelves rather than as pre-packaged bags. Barret explained that Heavenly Groceries gives people agency and doesn’t force new or unfamiliar cuisine onto patrons. “It allows people to maintain their own cultural heritage and cultural food practices because they get the individual choice of choosing what they want as well,” he said.

TABLE feeds nearly 500 kids through its four programs, which include “Summer TABLE,” “TABLE on the Go,” “Camp TABLE,” and “SnackChef.” The organization tries to focus its efforts on providing fresh food to school-age children. Turner explained that the organization aims to provide good food to the 30% of Carrboro students who rely on school programs for meals.

Similarly, No Kid Hungry focuses on ensuring school children have access to good food.

Soldavini explained that a lot of funding already exists, however there needs to be concerted effort to access it. Access isn’t the only hurdle, however. Many eligible children don’t want to utilize these programs because of the stigma attached to free meals.

Dr. Ammerman opened the room to questions, which led to a lively discussion about access to programs and how bad food influences whether or not children use the services. Efforts have been made to engage children in the menu planning process in hopes that more students in need will use the programs.

Academic Freedom Series The Academic Leadership Program (ALP) hosted a two-part series on Academic Freedom in April, beginning with a public screening and discussion of the 2016 documentary Starving the Beast on April 4 in the University Room. On April 24, discussion continued through a panel including ALP Fellows Andrew Perrin, Barbara Entwisle, Andy Reynolds, and Richard Myers about how academic freedom can be examined from all who serve a university.

Acting IAH Director James Moeser and ALP Director Suzanne Gulledge facilitated discussions about how political forces, donors, administration, faculty, and students shape the culture of academic freedom at institutions of higher education.

“Our aim in the series is to listen, thoughtfully gather information, consider diverse perspectives and then engage in discussion,” said Gulledge. “We hope these ALP-sponsored events will reflect that approach to understanding complex issues.”

Faculty made up most of the audience and shared their experiences, thoughts and ideas about the aspects of the university that contribute to fears of exercising academic freedom.

Q&A with new IAH Advisory Board Chair NELSON SCHWAB III Nelson Schwab III (’67) has worked tirelessly in service of UNC, through work on the Board of Visitors, as a Board of Trustees member, and on the board of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. For the last two years, he served as Vice Chair of the IAH Advisory Board. Beginning July 1, Schwab begins his position as Chair, succeeding Caroline Williamson. Below is an edited Q&A. You were an English major. What was your favorite class?

My favorite class ended up being a religion course. Dr. Boyd, who is no longer with us, he was a fantastic teacher.

His courses had 300-400 people in a class and yet they were hard to get into.

That was one of my favorites. You are basically studying the bible but it came to life in that classroom. He was terrific.

What are some of the ways you have been able to serve as a Carolina alum?

It really changed my life. I came here not knowing one person and left with friends 50 years later I still have to this day. And I am making new ones still. It’s really enriched my life in so many ways.

I just looked for ways to give back, to express that gratefulness in actions that would benefit the university in some way. Originally, I got involved with the Board of Visitors. And then my second area of involvement was with the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. I met IAH founder Ruel W. Tyson.

This was probably about 25 years ago. I really liked what he was trying to do. It was the very early days of the Institute.

He asked me to help and I willingly did.

I served eight years on the Board of Trustees. This was a great honor and privilege. I got to know the university so much better. I have been on the investment board and that ties into somewhat with what I do in my day job, but a great learning experience. And hopefully I have done something good for the university.

Why is it important to support the Institute for the Arts and Humanities?

Ruel’s vision was to create something that would support and foster really good professors. I mentioned Dr. Boyd as someone who stood out in my mind -- I can recall several others.

That became the soul of the university.

They are conveying the knowledge to the next generation that hopefully perpetuates itself. The better prepared, the better trained, the happier the professors are here, the better off the experience will be for the students. It creates a great learning environment.

I just thought that made sense. I love that it became about the arts and humanities. That’s something that is important for students to learn. It broadens your life. You can’t just go into business, law, or medicine and not live a life outside of that as well. This prepares you for a more whole life.

You are Co-Founder of Carousel Capital, a private equity firm. How has your time at Carolina contributed to your success?

One of my best friends here was Erskine Bowles, and he and I formed Carousel together. It was that association that started off here. As I look back on my days here, I participated in many clubs and different organizations.

It was working with people and how you form a team to try to accomplish something. That’s not too dissimilar from what I am doing today.

What advice would you give Carolina students?

Use this as a tremendous learning opportunity. Obviously, we have great resources here: great teachers and great minds. Take advantage of the time you have here to tap into as many of those as you can. I wish I had been a more serious student. I was here to learn, but I also had an awfully good time. I think if I were to do it over again, I would try to be a little bit more serious student.

What is a book that changed your life?

The book Good to Great by Jim Collins espoused a lot of principles I was trying to live and do in business but didn’t know it: More effective ways of building teams, setting goals. I can remember sharing that with my team.

It was a like a “Wow” moment for all of them, and it had a ripple throughout the whole team.

Have you ever done radio? You have a great voice.

I am going to keep my day job.
