Hard times reveal priorities and character. Faced with budget cuts, every unit at the University of North Carolina has had to reassess its activities in relation to its mission. The Institute for the Arts and Humanities is no exception.

We exist to serve faculty, especially faculty in the arts and humanities, in support of Carolina’s mission to provide a world-class education to our students.

Helping faculty become better teachers and scholars and strengthening their commitment to Carolina is our primary job. Our wider goal is to create a vibrant intellectual community on campus that brings the insights of the humanities and the creativity of the arts to the largest audience possible.

Our two core programs, the Faculty Fellows Program and the Academic Leadership Program, are in fine shape. We have also completed our second successful year of the program for new department chairs. We will continue to sponsor lecture series like the Memory Studies sessions of the past year and to contribute to the strategic collaboration between UNC and King’s College London. The Weil and Reckford lectures remain our primary public events, bringing distinguished speakers to Chapel Hill.

I’m proud to share that the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Karen Gil of the department of psychology, is a Fellow (Class of 2006) in our Academic Leadership Program, and we very much look forward to working with her as our dean. The challenges the University currently faces put an even greater premium on strong, thoughtful and caring faculty leadership.

So what has changed because of financial exigencies? We have reorganized and reduced our staff (luckily, without any layoffs) for significant savings. We will showcase the work of our own faculty more than bringing in visitors from around the world. A focus on local community building and on the tremendous talent right here on campus reminds us all of Carolina’s enduring strengths.

Our faculty and our friends will probably not notice the various ways in which we have cut back. The wonderful generosity of our faithful donors means that we have protected our core programs while retaining our ability to support various faculty initiatives.

The upcoming year will see plenty of IAH sponsored events in Hyde Hall and around campus, which we’ll preview here in these pages while we review our past year. So please visit our Web site, find a lecture or a workshop or a colloquium that interests you, and come

The mission of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities (IAH) is to foster intellectual community and faculty development at Carolina by supporting innovative teaching and research, especially in the arts and humanities. pages 2–3 The IAH’s two signature programs, the Faculty page 4

Chapman Family Faculty Fellowships provide semester-long, on-campus fellowships for faculty who have distinguished teaching records at UNC and regularly teach undergraduate students. Generously funded by Max Chapman Jr. since 1994, this program is one of the premier elements of our IAH Fellowship program. Patricia Parker / profiled fellow Patricia Parker has spent fellowship semesters at the Institute as an IAH Fellow (spring 2002) and a Kauffman Fellow (spring 2007). Both experiences laid the groundwork for the communications studies professor to conceive and create an organization dedicated to promoting leadership development and community activism, particularly among young women of color.

Through her work with The Ella Baker Women’s Center for Leadership and Community Activism and its flagship program, Striving Sisters Speak!!! (S3), Parker brought several young women to Washington D.C. for the Inauguration. S3 has undertaken numerous projects, including a community fair and a conference on youth/ adult collaboration.

Marianne Gingher / profiled fellow Marianne Gingher used her spring 2008 semester as a Chapman Family Faculty Fellow to complete the manuscript for Adventures in Pen Land: One Writer’s Journey from Inklings to Ink. Adventures contains a whimsical series of vignettes that portray Gingher’s own ascent from 6-year-old amateur author/illustrator to bona fide author and professor of creative writing at UNC.

Gingher also worked on a collection of “flash fiction” short stories by N.C. writers during her fellowship semester. Long Story Short is available September 2009.

The Ruel W. Tyson Jr. Academic Leadership Program

the institute

helps prepare and support current and emerging academic leaders through our semester-long Tyson Academic Leadership Program (ALP). Since 2001, our Leadership Fellows have engaged in a series of activities to help them develop leadership skills, clarify their career commitments, build a leadership network within the campus and extend their contacts to other leaders beyond the University. In so doing, they build lasting relationships, continuing to meet with their cohorts as a “forum” years after their semester ends. Kim StromGottfried, Smith P. Theimann Jr. Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Professional Practice in the School of Social Work, serves as the faculty director of the ALP.

Chairs Leadership Program The IAH created the Chairs Leadership Program (CLP) through the endowment of the Academic Leadership Program by alumni Barbara and Pitt Hyde in 2006. The CLP offers first-time and reappointed chairs a year of monthly conversations in which they can share ideas, identify best practices and explore important issues related to the key roles they play within the University. This year, for the first time, the CLP included chairs from both the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Public Health. Bill Balthrop, communication studies professor, leads the CLP.

helping unc recruit, develop and retain the best possible faculty is the core mission of the IAH. Our programs provide faculty with what they need to be successful — and successful faculty want to stay at the university that affords them that vital support.

The Kenan Faculty Retention Fund is a $1 million endowment created by IAH donors in conjunction with a matching grant from the William R. Kenan Charitable Trust. To date, the Kenan Fund has provided research accounts for 13 faculty who are IAH Fellows and who have been approached by other universities. The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the IAH director work together to administer the fund, which provides crucial flexibility in the College’s ability to respond to attempts to hire away our best faculty.

The Chairs Say Yes Fund provides departmental chairs with a small, unrestricted fund they can use to support their faculty.

For 2008–2009, the departments of communication studies and of religious studies each received $10,000. Because the College was forced to cut funding for travel to conferences, this money was particularly helpful this year and allowed junior faculty to present their work to professional colleagues across the nation and around the world.

Carolina

In the March 2009 UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees report, “Carolina: Best Place to Teach, Learn and Discover Report,” Trustees John Ellison and J.J. Raynor, then-UNC student body president, recognize the Institute for the Arts and Humanities for its role in supporting faculty retention and recruitment.

“The IAH programs play an important development opportunity for our promising faculty,” the authors write. “Acceptance in these programs is highly regarded, and those who have attended feel a renewed sense of pride in the University.”

The Institute, one of the two University institutions lauded for supporting faculty retention and recruitment efforts, garnered praise for its focus on personal development, leadership development and faculty renewal through our signature programs: the Academic Leadership program (ALP), the Faculty Fellows program and the Chairs Leadership program (CLP).

Friends Events On October 9, 2008, the IAH thanked the friends who donated so generously to the Ruel Tyson Legacy Fund during the Carolina First campaign with a dinner in the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center State Dining Room. The Legacy Fund exceeded its goal of $3.5 million and provides an endowment for the ongoing support of the IAH. In addition to honoring Ruel with their gifts, donors designated a special Carolina person they wished to honor and joined that former teacher or inspirational mentor at the dinner. We celebrate our Legacy Fund donors on page 11.

Caroline and Robert Williamson hosted a post-election discussion November 10 in their New York City home.

Led by Carolina Professor of History Richard Kohn, the group of Carolina alumni, including both Republicans and Democrats, had a friendly and far-reaching conversation about where the country is headed and how we might best face up to its challenges.

At the Greensboro home of Vicky and Bob Borden in May, John Ellison of the UNC Board of Trustees and creative writer Marianne Gingher of the English department (both Greensboro natives) talked about the impact of enrollment growth at UNC. How can we accommodate growth without losing what makes Carolina special — particularly its liberal arts tradition of undergraduate education? Ellison discussed the March 2009 “Carolina: Best Place to Teach, Learn and Discover” report (see page 5 for details), while Gingher shared her perspective on today’s undergraduates and their growing sense of what it means to live in our increasingly globalized world.

This year, John and Cyndy O’Hara hosted two memorable dinners with NPR radio’s Dick Gordon, the producer and voice of “The Story,” and a visiting artist/teacher from Iraq, Ahmed Fadaam. Fadaam served as Gordon’s translator when Gordon covered Iraq for the Canadian Broadcasting System in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion; he left Iraq when he received death threats because he was working with foreigners. With 14 around the table each evening, the chaos of Iraq and the uncertainty of its future were brought home vividly — as was the shared humanity of our guest from Iraq, who hoped he could someday welcome us into his home for dinner in a peaceful Baghdad.

On a December evening at Bob and Tracy Winston’s home in Raleigh, Fellows and alumni in business, media and the arts met to discuss how new digital technologies have transformed their work worlds and their everyday existence. The IAH will continue this discussion this year as we lead into our digital arts and humanities festival in February 2010 (page 9).

Weil Lecture on American Citizenship

in 2009, the Weil Lecture on American Citizenship featured U.S. Senator John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the 2004 Democratic Party candidate for president.

“There are some that try to argue that you can’t deal with climate change in an economic crisis,” Kerry said.

“But I can’t think of a mindset that is more off-base than that. Dealing with climate change is part of the solution to the economic crisis.”

The Weil lecture dates back to 1914, when William Howard Taft came to Chapel Hill to inaugurate the series. Other speakers over the years have been Jimmy Carter, Nancy Kassebaum, Eleanor Roosevelt and J. William Fulbright. The IAH has hosted the Weil lecture since 1999.

UNC system President Erskine Bowles introduced Kerry, who spoke on climate change and urged the audience of 500 to get involved. The senator insisted that American ingenuity could provide a solution to global warming and expressed optimism that investment and innovations in “green technology” would foster much needed economic growth.

In addition to the lecture, the Institute hosted a small private luncheon for the Weil family and the senator, inviting Friends of the Institute and UNC administrators and faculty to hear Kerry’s lunch remarks. Guests addressed a table topic on the responsibilities of citizenship, which spurred discussion about the strong service ethos among today’s college students, UNC’s interest in encouraging “engaged scholarship,” and economic inequality in the United States.

incubator projects

in the spirit of the Incubator that IAH Founding Director Ruel Tyson installed in Hyde Hall to memorialize UNC Chancellor Michael Hooker, the IAH is dedicated to encouraging and supporting innovative work among Carolina’s faculty.

Faculty Working Groups The IAH supports a number of collaborative, interdisciplinary faculty working groups that explore new fields of research, new pedagogical techniques and new media for the production and dissemination of knowledge.

This year, the IAH worked with the faculty group on Cultures of Memory to produce a series of events that highlighted the emerging field of memory studies. The series was supported, in part, with funding from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust.

Other current faculty working groups explore medical humanities, the contemporary arts, critical theory, medical ethics, the local food movement, and 18th and 19th century travel.

King’s College London Collaboration The IAH is deeply involved in fostering the strategic collaboration between UNC and King’s College London (KCL). Faculty and undergraduate and graduate students all have been traveling across the pond, some for semester-long exchanges, others for shorter visits.

This May, the UNC department of English and comparative literature co-hosted in London with King’s College colleagues a conference featuring 60 speakers from four continents on “The Work of LifeWriting.” “Life-Writing” covers memoirs, autobiographies, case histories, biographies, medical narratives, blogs and other forms of creative non-fiction. This conference and last year’s, which featured the American studies department, will lead to publication of works to be edited by UNC and KCL faculty.

Entrepreneurial Workshop The first Faculty Workshop on Entrepreneurship in May 2009 was a joint venture of the IAH and the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative (CEI). The CEI has developed undergraduate minors in entrepreneurship for students in arts, science and social sciences. The workshop brought the spirit of entrepreneurship to faculty in a four-day blitz affectionately called “entrepreneurial boot camp.”

Led by CEI faculty Lowry Caudill, Buck Goldstein, Kimberly Jenkins and John Stewart, 16 faculty—doctors, scientists, artists, anthropologists and one brand-new dean—got a semester’s worth of training in four days (faculty are reputed to be fast learners) and also had the chance to put their new skills to the test.

The training was intended to provide faculty the skills needed to move from a good idea to a sustainable enterprise, whether that idea is a business to develop a new drug or a program to enhance after-school programs in public schools.

On the last afternoon, four faculty groups presented a start-up project to a panel of venture capitalists, who then awarded a prize of UNC shirts designed by Alexander Julian. The winning team proposed developing scholarly network software. Viral contagion is fully expected. Add a few more workshops, and Carolina will boast the most entrepreneurial faculty in the world.

chat: a digital arts and humanities festival

Today, the country’s leading research universities are focusing substantial resources on research into the emerging role of digital technologies in the arts and humanities. Major granting institutions are likewise investing heavily in arts and humanities research that explores the educational and cultural possibilities afforded by digital technologies.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a unique opportunity to establish itself as a leader in this most forwardlooking field of arts and humanities scholarship.

February 16–20, 2010, the Institute for the Arts and Humanities will present a large-scale digital arts and humanities festival on the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus. With three leading research universities, a supercomputing center and a cluster of cutting-edge technology companies all closely located here in the Triangle, UNC sits at an intersection of opportunity.

CHAT, an acronym for Collaborations: Humanities, Arts & Technology, is an occasion to bring to light existing collaborations between researchers in the corporate and academic sectors of our region, recruit new talent to our state’s universities and businesses, and inspire entrepreneurial activity.

Doing so will help the University retain both its reputation as a cutting-edge research institution and its ability to attract the best arts and humanities scholars and students as we move into an increasingly digital future.

State Universities to the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) and the dozens of information technology firms in the Research Triangle Park. While collaboration among these resources is underway, the potential synergies among them are vast and largely untapped.

The Institute already has created exciting micro-level partnerships through faculty working groups that comprise faculty and technologists from UNC, Duke, N.C. State and RENCI. These faculty working groups will present their projects during the festival — an exciting array that demonstrates the opportunities for innovative, collaborative arts and humanities work enabled by technology.

To promote discussion during the festival, the Institute is partnering at UNC with the School of Law, KenanFlagler Business School, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the School of Information and Library Science to select and bring in keynote speakers on current issues in digital arts and humanities.

Technology in the classroom is an issue that extends beyond the University. For that reason, the Institute has also partnered with the School of Education and N.C. Learn to create a series of continuing education workshops for K–12 teachers.

Teachers will have the opportunity to attend workshops while fully participating in the festival.

Multimedia performances and panel discussions that include visiting artists, faculty, technology professionals, students and audience members will round out the festival.

UNC brings its own substantial resources to this endeavor— from our top-rated School of Information and Library Science to our department of computer science, a recognized leader in game technology, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Exciting new research projects emerge when these programs collaborate with faculty and students in our highly ranked arts and humanities departments.

This first CHAT festival will, we hope, be part of a continuing effort on the part of the entire University community to establish the Triangle region as a national leader in the exploration, integration and interrogation of digital technologies by the arts and humanities.

UNC is also situated in the midst of an unparalleled collection of technological resources, from Duke and N.C.

above: On October 10, the IAH celebrated the presentation of the inaugural George H. Johnson Prize for Distinguished Achievement by an IAH Fellow to Trudier Harris, J. Carlyle Sitterson Professor of English, with a formal award ceremony and reception.

above: Martha Marks, program coordinator for the Faculty Fellows Program at the IAH, won the 2008 Robert R. Cornwell Unsung Hero Award in recognition of her long-term contributions to the University. Martha has served the University community for 20 years, 15 of which have been at the IAH. A panel of faculty and staff chooses one winner each year from a University-wide group of staff nominated by their peers and supervisors.
