SABINA ELENA DRAGOMIR

And the woman was suffused with the mysterious power of dreams

If I like a work, if it disturbs me, I try to look at it beyond its simple understanding.

Life is always right.

I try to split hairs, to exaggerate, to a certain extent to slow down, to arrive at the time of Knowledge.

Future invades us, in order to metamorphose into us, long before it happens.

Viaţa are întotdeauna dreptate.

The seeking of Sabina Elena Dragomir is reflected in her works, becoming the matter and the essence of the opening dedicated to her, Lightning Body_Quiet Noise, reaching those strings which disturb and subvert the understanding.

Personal, artistic, professional.

Visiting IAGA gallery during the opening comprising her 20 works, created by the Artist precisely for this event, in late 2015 and in early 2016, the impression of a suspended and reversed time is created.

The opening is divided into three main sections which we may define as follows:

1) The intimate body closed in the muffled and sensual space of the artist’s body, in the stance of care of the intimate moment, maybe shared, maybe solitary;

The artistic experience is incredibly similar to the sexual one, with its pains and pleasures, phenomena which in reality are nothing more than different forms of one and the same desire and ecstasy.

2) The body in abandonment, the hugging that does not hug, the bodies that are exhausted when they meet, the colours that become acidic;

Love consists in this, two solitary entities that protect each other at random, touch each other, greet each other.

3) The regret, a poetic farewell in which only the blank spaces remain to recount a story that may never existed, and the hands of work 92, the old hand and the Artist’s hand share a crumbled space, an abandoned room, a future whitish space contaminating the meeting between the two hands.

This latter framework, with a particular significance for the Artist’s searches reflected in the Works exhibited in the Gallery’s space, shows the undoubted Ripening, the effort, the stubbornness, the vision of a woman Artist in the world.

The topic of this phase is very dear to me. Women Artists’ searches out of the desire to capture the Female body and what that body transmits to the world. Of an immense depth, of a living solitude.

Sabina Dragomir performs, therefore a foray of cohesion, a personal language that has the force to remain entrenched and that will create a future.

True Works of Arts are touched by an infinite solitude and nothing can equal their perception and meaning, not even the curators and art critics whom remain the last in understanding them.

Walter Bonomi

The first solo exhibition of the artist Sabina Dragomir Lightning Body, Quiet Noise” captures a constant amplification of the metaphoric possibilities typical to a classical subject: the feminine nude. The capacity of selecting ovel hypostasis for a classical subject has led the artistic creation to arrive at a unitary series from 2014-2015.

By veiling the human body in transparent pellicles, like water, or translucent pellicles, like garment materials, and the blurring of the image itself together with the movement of the body, represented ways by which Sabina Dragomir created coherent series such as Different Identity and Retrieval. In these paintings the succession of images was quasi-narrative and with a more accentuated explanatory note. The Issue of the feminine identity was already discovered and was soon to become the recurring theme for her subsequent creation.

Probably the most important change that has been produced in her creative dynamic between 2015 and 2016 was switching from images that were capturing simple hypostasis particular to some nudes, to images that suggest real visual scenarios. Another notable change is transitioning from a worm or neutral predominant chromatic spectrum, without particularly intense colors, to a chromatic spectrum of deeper shades, especially darkest ones.

These visual dynamic changes claim a tendency for the accentuation of the metaphoric qualities of the image and ads dramatism to some images mainly to the non-violent ones, designed following the logic of compliments brought both to the genuine beauty of the nude and the authentic contemplative look of the public.

Toward the end of the year 2015, Sabina Dragomir was still painting the feminine hypostases specific in Chimera, Cocoon, Disillusion Utterly or Only Mine, which conjured up the typical hypostases of some feminine characters, strongly attached to their own body’s intimacy or caught on the self, like in the work Rejection. This typology of paintings continued into the beginning of the year 2016 with Solitude, after which followed a few transition works toward the new 8

Prima expoziție personală a artistei Sabina Dragomir, Corp fulgerător, zgomot silențios surprinde o continuă amplificare a posibilităților metaforice caracteristice unui subiect clasic: nudul feminin.

metaphoric status of the image, suggesting a much bigger variety of visual and explicative scenarios in regards to the approached subject. Deserted, Embrace, Luxury Touch and an earlier work A.N.A. (2015) are representative in this sense.

The most important step toward the new status of the image, understood as an active scenario, rich in suggestions originated from within the ambiguity of the narrative overtone, was accomplished starting with the painting Cinema, which represents the first creation of this kind in 2016. With this, starts a new artistic stage, defined through the concept lightning body, quiet noise. From now on the polysemous of the image becomes a specific characteristic for the created works. The painting Cinema captures the multitude of visual scenario elements that act as a semantic amplifier. The subject in this work includes two hands that touch each other like in a cinema foreground that we see within the lighted rectangle of a TV monitor located in a darkened room, which is suggested through a chiaroscuro almost visible in the general obscurity of the work. Transparent Fusion represents yet another emblematic work, one with which the artist discovers the peculiar fascination that she can exercise over the public, the fluid ambiguity of the feminine body in a mysterious association with the hand motif.

Most often, the images are flashing instants of some bodily fragments, corresponding to time sequences. Even though in the majority of the cases we are talking about images that have the power of existential proof, the tone of the visual story is that of some compensatory reveries. And because we are situated in a fictional realm of the image, the film of the sequences of representations does not ever explain the story that stood behind bringing them on canvas. It’s a film from which some movie frames are missing, however, is a coherent one from which the following works are part of: Achieved, Devoured, 92, Overflowing or Wild Flowers. These last three creations are exemplary for the accentuation of a solemn vision, obtained especially through the use of darker shades of color, found also in the abstract works such as Black Baroque or Diamonds. A significant section of the exhibition stands out through images that suggest subtle sonorities of the feminine body, within an art with synesthetic qualities.

A significant section of the exhibition stands out through images that suggest subtle sonorities of the feminine body, within an art with synesthetic qualities. In Luxury Touch, our visual perception records at the same time the luxuriant sound of the fur and also of the draping of the textiles which surround the body in a sensual vibration. Embrace is another painting in which the image of the moved linens by the uncovered leg also recalls the subtle sonority of the gesture. In this kind of visual scenarios, the sound suggestion completes the signification of the feminine body through eroticism – see Solitude, Rejection and Luxury Touch, Devoured, Achieved, …otherwise love or Transparent Fusion – but also through lyricism. Because part of the lyricism of the images is being given by the amplitude of gestures, measured by something so ineffable as the intimate space sonorities, in which the materiality of the draping is often the receptacle of a bodily movement that gathers together all the props typical for such a space.

As in the photographical frames, Sabina Dragomir emphasizes pictorially the multiple, pulsatile and self-generating feminine identity, in its dramatic becoming. The unusual of the images retains the fragility of this becoming, which is struggling between the decay and the revealing of the self.

Before pulverizing in the light or dissolving in the night, the bodily images of the becoming are telling us with liveliness an unrepeatable story. There will never be another identical painted canvas. The motifs of the hands, legs and torsos are exposing the idea of an unsettling sublime which captures the feminine body not how it is, but what it may become if it could remodel according to the soul that inhabits it.

Lightning Body, Quiet Noise it is one of the artistically boldest embodiments of a transformation idea. In the context of the reviving hyperrealism of painting in the Romania of the years 2000, the approach of the artist Sabina Dragomir reveals a dramatic poetry, through budding and self-affirmation of fragmented bodies.

The artist talks about her relationship with the universe, she illustrates and tells her world, the viable tension which can be transmitted, felt, focusing her entire creative efforts on her personal perceptions. Her creation is based on taking, observing, and passing on to someone else.

The flashing vision of a glowing body, its metamorphosis and fragments, create an unusual artistic world that is presented to us by Sabina Dragomir. This world seems to talk about a process of burning with a quiet noise. Before disappearing, the body images tell us, with exhilaration, their last story. We don’t know if it is the low noise of memory or the roaring noise of burning. Lightning Body, Quiet Noise is one of the most daring artistic embodiment of the idea of transformation. In the artistic context after the 2000’s, in which the new figurative was looking to impose a pragmatic realism, the approach of the artist is capable to discover in the tracks left by the fragment-bodies a poetry for which the becoming and self affirmation is dramatic.

the Child Artist

For the art lover in me, the exhibition was a way of loosing myself in a world created by paintings, a world that urges the most subtle feelings of the human being. I stepped in a world filed with color wishing to meet the child Sabina, that I was really missing, the child Sabina that featured a chameleonic personality, agile and intelligent, a resourceful, skilful child who put so much soul into everything she was doing.

I felt like I was in a dialog with the paintings which offered me an avalanche of revelations and which were spinning around me like a carousel. I was looking at the works of the artist Sabina, trying to be objective and I saw the positive and cheerful child, lover of all things human, I saw a victorious child but also a confused child barricaded in its own universe.

The paintings told their own story, the artist’s relationships with people and her way of seeing the world, they recounted happenings, they told of her happiness when she paints.

In a world abound of vulgarity and shrill, redundancies of all kinds my artist child remained as innocent.

The Mother, Ştefania Dragomir

The intimate space, that “protection bubble”, is built and well anchored by every human being. This project wishes to create an atmosphere in which people can retrieve, discover themselves. The art works that are part of this series manage to express a corner of forgetfulness, a moment of carelessness, of self rediscovery, the search and the unraveling of the soul’s wish of escaping from shape, a corner of meditation and self-knowledge.

This unraveling of the true identity leads to a strong treatment of this concept. The tension between being and appearance is rendered with a fine poetic feel, with abstract insertions, with a strong gestural way that make the viewer feel the tension and the force of the feelings, through scratches and fingerprints of my own fingers.

As an artist I choose to express myself in this manner because I believe in the fact that my feelings can be found in each individual, certainly in different shapes. As inhabitants of this “world” we are made from the same primordial elements, with the help of which we create wishes, secrets, and dreams. I wish to offer to the public that screen of mirror that gives them courage to find themselves, to be free to express their own thoughts, wishes, or on the contrary, their own rejections, denials or even rebellions.

It is a complex challenge finding and acquiring my own style of expressing the feelings, through a personal artistic approach with the help of which to successfully get to a unique method of showing the specificity of my own personality, as a reply to the approached subject or theme.

An attempt appears, that of confronting, through plastic language, the relationship between body and soul appears. I would like to expose a clear idea, the fact that we don’t have to try to be unique, but to discover and to keep our own world in which we develop, where we are honest, free, unveiled of the outside world’s constraints. Each and every one of us will discover the fact that our soul carries transparences that leave open ways of continuous absorption and dedication, the placenta that covers a traveler soul.

Born in 1992 in Brasov (Romania), she lives and works in Cluj-Napoca. She graduated in Painting, she is attending the Master in Painting at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca. Sabina Dragomir faces through the pictorial language the relationship between soul and body, frequently choosing herself as the subject of investigation. Water is the central element in this direction of research, intended it as the original and originating liquid in which the body bends moves and turns, resisting and abandoning its contractions and so revealing its true intention. Starting point are the self-photographs, from which the artist draws portraits that are the source of the canvases on which she paints herself in the tension between being and appearance, with refined pictorial poetry. The last phase of the research sees the attenuation of the palette painting in whites and blacks, which make even more suffused the bodily presence than the spiritual emergence. Another recent path is directed to the study of the shadow of the body, not only as the alterity of the subject painted, but also as the alterity of the viewer that goes in the work and confronts with its identity.

See beyond appearance

Beauty is dangerous. The body betrays the thoughts. The identity is hidden behind the skin of appearance. All the works by Sabina Dragomir has developed around the process of liberation of the work - and of herselffrom appearance misleading.

It is a slow work, careful, able to not give in to the lure of the beautiful painting.

It is a painting of knowledge, a constant experimentation, in search of the soul caught in the clutches of corporeality.

For this, the artist has been able to break free from the refuges of robes and veils, able to seduce the limit of the body; she wanted to climb the smooth top of the conventions, till breaking up, with a liquid paint, bodies immersed in placentas blue and green; today, she arrives at the black and white, at the gray shaded and suspended. It is the last refusal of the seduction of mimesis, the brave abandonment of the possible uncertainty of the image in tension. And they are shadows made by the subjects painted, shadows made by us that we enter in the works, shadows of shadows to say our blindness, our losing ourselves in the vain things, our having to find ourselves right there: where painting of Sabina Dragomir apparently dissolves, giving us the task to show us. Narciso at the mirror falls in love not with himself, but with his own reflection. In it he seeks refuge, and finds death.
