The problematic of the identity was central to the theoretical thinking and to the artistic practice of the last 20 years.

The 90’s were dominated by a strong attention towards the identity in relationship with the body and the genetical and digital transformation, the last decade was characterized by the antitheses between the recovery of the national identity and it’s absorption due to multi-cultures and globalization.

It is in the name of the modernity that artists have sacrificed the artistic language and have started a process of annulling the characteristics of each country, in order to protect their identity, they sacrificed the group values and those of the society as dialog and confrontation.

Between individualistic tensions and melting-pot type restlessness, we are invaded by exhibitions that speak about hybridization and transculturalism, where the pretended dialog plays on opposite side with art work originated from the four corners of the world or from far away generations, like the stupefied fish in a tank without oxygen.

We speak about rapidity and about eliminating spatio-temporal-identity borders, cultural frontiers and we rise behind the trenches of individualism and exclusivity.

Now the urgency of the identity search wishes to find a new point of reflection and a stimulus in another artist of the IAGA Gallery: Charles J. de Bisthoven, which, with a different approach tries to reflect on the problematic of his own present existence (physical/ temporal) and with his own words:

Sky Valley is a display of images evolving from sober content towards narration and allegory: the paintings evolve in the rooms of the exposition as a journey towards deeper stories.

For this series I chose to paint sincere and bold images on canvas in a manner that would be a development of sensible drawing. It is an endeavor to extend its freshness and frankness to painting as a medium.

The Sky Valley is a space where the reality of the present blurs with a stream of fascination, recollection, desire.

Looking up the wire crossings , leading light, words, information, communication, the initial surprise then eyes adjust transforming the environment in normal daily life.

But the sound emitted during night hours, whisper that takes shape and fills the city , and that is intertwined with people, crossing , in order and disorder of the shares , order and disorder of unknown relationships.

An aerial geography, which runs through and permeates the visual space. Besides the fixity and Research of the sign.

Just as every plot can bring communication and disorder , urban routes in broken segments , variable geometry air, where the items are lost.

The space reconstructed magnetic drifts to more voices , is shaped by pushing the look at the research of fixed points, where the Charles J. de Bisthoven’s stylistic research could be perfectly intertwined with the geometry, at first random view, of urban communication, of every human being .

Prin alegere? Din necesitate? By choice? By necessity?

Sky Valley actualizing the search of the contemporaneous message wishes to be an awareness of the body’s creases, of the uncomfortable colors, of the collision and contraction moment, between the wreckage and the collective anesthesia, realizing the hiding and the necessary historical knowledge.

But in fact, it is not the laceration and the contradiction that worries me, but the shapes that pretend to heal the first (laceration) or solve the lather (contradiction).

For ending, we use the artist’s words: Combining a robust formation in Graphic Novel and Illustration from Liège (BE) with the rigorous academic techniques of the Painting faculty in Cluj-Napoca (RO), I connect the different visual languages that I practice:

- painting as an endurance battle between the support, colors, light, composition and myself as the bearer of the work. The product of indepth study and practice, painting consists for me in a broad and consistent attempt at reaching a comprehensive and detailed level of interpretation of the outside world flowing throughout my eyes and hands.

Like drawings with gravity, they are single, outlined images gaining narrative quality even outside of themselves when juxtaposed.

- the fast, expressive, spontaneous drawing in its simplest form: sensible drawing in its essence: “Esquisses, je vous adore, car vous n’êtes pas le début du dessin, vous en êtes l’essentiel” as well as its graphical1 and technical aspects through synthetical forms, instinctive catch of outlines and lines themselves. In some cases, l’esquisse vaut le tableau2 (the sketch is worth the painting), as it may contain most of a representation’s meaning..

- the narrative quality inside single or between juxtaposed images or graphic novel as a sequential art in its simplest form and not especially as printed or published medium: the earliest traces of art in the Chauvet Cave, for example, had narrative quality and sequentially in this sense3. This may also be perceived as writing with images; from Cuneiform to a diversified assortment of the Bayeux Tapestry, Giotto’s frescoes, the works of Rodophe Töpffer.

These three elements form the base of my approach, they are the core of it.

Purposely of not, each work is part of a series is a brick in my wall; marks rehearsing the flow of moments, life events, fascinations, discoveries, readings of which I am the product. I arrange these works in series that I show in separate expositions - these series themselves being part of the longer thread of my works.

I am a boat swayed by the waves, my storm is inside - Je suis un bateau battu par les vagues, ma tempête est inté-rieure.

GESTURE DRAWINGS

An exploration of the mystery of the inner and outside world in drawing and painting. My research is gestural, graphic and painterly, spiritual. A central theme, the distance in time and space between people and places. From this it starts, down to a tornado of images it comes; comet where all the works are part of an ensemble with narrative quality.

Gesture and the motion are as important as the drawing itself. The techniques vary according to the situation: the paper and materials used are those I came across at some point. I work fast, instinctively, spontaneously. Once a drawing is made, it does not belong to me anymore. I only retain my own vision of it.

Each viewer may adapt it to his own experience, desire, opinion and takes part in the process of creation as he sees the image and makes his own vision of it. It is a profound intimate experience, a trip inside one’s self. Thus, the viewer becomes the author. An image seen by a hundred viewers results in a hundred versions of it.

The tools and materials used are authentic, organic. Charcoal, paper, bread. Hands, fingers, palms. Gesture drawing as instinctive movement and direct contact with the support and the image, saving the traces of the action.

The works exposed communicate within themselves as well as one with the other: as they are juxtaposed, more sense and even narrative quality emerge through the space between the images. This effect is similar to the gutter or space between the panels of a graphic novel as our imagination takes the two images boarding the gutter and transforms them into a single idea.
