Cluj Calling Project di Walter Bonomi

Cluj Calling Project by Walter Bonomi

Lei mi chiede “Come saranno i tuoi bambini?” “Grassi, finchè avranno sangue mi dimenticheranno”.

She asked me, “How will your children be?” “Fat, as long as they will have blood, they will forget me”

Consider this, I tell her, naked burning frantically of osseous love. So, between a drift and unwanted (wanted) oasis, there was no greeting handkerchief, just her cold wrists to remember the farewell.

Take curare and calm down, she tells me.

Interzona.

Interzone (between zones). Our entire desire of correcting errors, it’s untrue, no correction. Return home Lazarus, pay the Man and go back to your home. Why should we still want to see your flesh to borrow?

Lei ancora si prova a dire:

She still tries to say:

You’ve put me in my bare hands, that are seeking an acid green space, you have seen my naked body breaking out of impracticable cages, you saw it trying to escape from rabid dogs before you could react, you saw that I was just pretending for your attention. Now talk to me, tell me where with tears and flesh wounds will you reveal yourself? You promised me dizziness, I wanted the vertigo.

Interzone (between zones) two: Woman. Will you find that your actions can protect me? I count one by one the white tiles that surround me, they call it cure. I disinfect, I care, I clean, I lean to the presence and I do not ask questions. I’m looking for you, I’m denying you, and I’m finding you, awoken (unveiled) where you would never have thought possible. The veils envelop me, I do not seek your smile, heartbreak motel for brief wet moments, uncomfortable shoes. Where water cannot hide (conceal), the desire that I always yearned for. My body, voluptuousness that you seek, didn’t find your face, your hands do not reach me, but soon I will be in the other eyes.

The Algebra of Lust. I welcome you in fragility, there are my hands that are working long time to reconstruct the moments of disappointment. Each portrait is the vision of somewhere else, authentic when I tried to remember. I do so to not compromise myself, I thought I could have, lightness tired of gravity, ask me again what I think, the dryness of the words in meetings so possible and never realized. I hold my lips and I return them to the color that you knew, I caught your women, and now they are staring at you motionless, I am in them. Everything is left suspended, nothing is calm here, I have anchored you to my breath, I know that your respite is the desire to bleed.

Here is Elsewhere. A geographical area that crosses and penetrates the visual space. Besides fixity, research of the sign. As every plot can bring communication and disorder, urban routes in broken segments, variable aerial geometry, where the voices are lost.

The space reconstructed in magnetic drifts to more voices, finds form by pushing the look towards the research of fixed points, where my hand is perfectly intertwined with the geometry at first glance random urban communication, of every human being.

The dirty rejection reduces the weight grows trash denial. There are narrow air gaps in which you have to do with, what is the weight to be supported on the shoulders, if we only stop to watch the intimate spaces? The place in which our steps are resting, to protect or to remember, to trace the daily spaces that need to be in their essence the border of restauration of the fire of your moment. There are burning scraps, that crash the space non the place, I’m still walking and searching for the limit where the air is increasingly rare to breathe. Looking down, sharp pouring rain, there are Venuses of skinned solitary beauty, and you elsewhere. I look forward to getting lost in your brightness.

Damnatio materiae di Ilaria Bignotti

Damnatio materiae by Ilaria Bignotti

1. If the form vanishes its root is eternal-Mario Merz Every work of painting and sculpture of Cluj Calling Project, reveals, and protects, the courage of being an artist today. The courage to suggest, at all costs, the worldview, of still believe in the work as message given to the world, in the world generated and therein returning, as a strong echo, invasive, punctual. In a close, visceral relationship with life, in life.

To do so, otherwise, each of the selected artists has played flesh and blood of his work: he put a strain on the materials of which his works are made. It invoked the damnation, to claim its saving power. Daily and universal. When we were thinking about the title for this exhibition, it had emerged, strong, that of Damnatio materiae. But in front of the widening of the exhibition project, and of its becoming travelling – the exhibition will move to Italy – it is wanted rightly insist on the specificity of this researches, of their belonging to a space-time with specific characteristics, traditions and languages.

firm handshake: how life. The answer cannot be indifferent, nor acquiescence tepid. But emotional reaction: between materials and memory.

All’anima.

Material: in its etymology, contains the concepts of measurement and mother; of doing with your hands, of building, of shaping the thought and the soul. Memory: in its etymology, it contains the actions of thinking, remembering, and also of desiring, of caring. If you care about something, you want that this thing become to remember, a monument of your own time and space. In the damnation of materials, the breath of memory, meets the eternal aspiration.

2. Vedere oltre l’apparenza-Sabina Dragomir La bellezza è pericolosa.

2. See beyond appearance-Sabina Dragomir Beauty is dangerous. The body betrays the thoughts. The identity is hidden behind the skin of appearance. All the works by Sabina Dragomir has developed around the process of liberation of the work - and of herself - from appearance misleading. It is a slow work, careful, able to not give in to the lure of the beautiful painting. It is a painting of knowledge, a constant experimentation, in search of the soul caught in the clutches of corporeality. For this, the artist has been able to break free from the refuges of robes and veils, able to seduce the limit of the body; she wanted to climb the smooth top of the

conventions, till breaking up, with a liquid paint, bodies immersed in placentas blue and green; today, she arrives at the black and white, at the gray shaded and suspended. It is the last refusal of the seduction of mimesis, the brave abandonment of the possible uncertainty of the image in tension. And they are shadows made by the subjects painted, shadows made by us that we enter in the works, shadows of shadows to say our blindness, our losing ourselves in the vain things, our having to find ourselves right there: where painting of Sabina Dragomir apparently dissolves, giving us the task to show us. Narciso at the mirror falls in love not with himself, but with his own reflection. In it he seeks refuge, and finds death.

3. The rebirth into a new quality of consciousness-Bianca Brisan Try Out. Try again. Press. Push. The problem is still that of the threshold. Of the membrane, thick or thin, that the artist knows she must overcome, tear, rip. Gently. The research by Bianca Brisan is fought on the edge of a womb that does not want to to leave us. Small obsessions surround the boundaries of his challenge to the conventions of painting: the chiaroscuro, the tension towards the perfect reproduction of the forces in play, the accurate, and never satisfied, rendering anatomical details, in an attempt to overcome the liminal space of vision. In front of the works by Bianca the desire is to reach out,

intromette tra me e l’altro. Ora siamo noi a tentare. Tentare ancora. Premere. Spingere.

to tear the border, to overcome the veil that intrudes between me and the other. Who is painted, who’s real? Who are forced, who is free? The party game gives us the responsibility. Now we have to try. Try yet. Press. Push. From the threshold of the work, the other looks at us without saying anything, and shouts from the silence of the colors wisely diluted, in a great lesson of a painting that is growing. With the grace of a strong young woman artist.

4. And everything becomes possible-Alexandra Muresan The exhibition offers glimpses of dialogue unexpected yet ancient, as ancient languages and traditions from which the selected artists are aware of starting to forget them by heart. To forget means being aware of what was before: and to wish that there is something else, again, to remember again. Tradition is the message of the story to which we must be able to answer: the present as continuous, tiring, amazed redemption of the past. Thus, the dissolving of the faces and bodies skillfully painted by Dragomir and Brisan crash on sculpture by Alexandra Muresan. Landing place of the viewer, her works ask us a long pause that, from visual, become cognitive. The philosophical roots of the formation of Muresan are revealed in the fluid weaves and frozen movements of her plastics processing: the spectacular creation and dissolution of thoughts is realized in the mellow and diaphanous matter of the glass, in a back and forth of questions and answers, certainties and hopes that

Totul datorită harului puternic a unei tinere artiste. 4.

we are chasing with our gaze. Which is the material of time passing? Where dissolve the nodes of saying, of everyday working, flowing and unstoppable as the minutes, the hours, the days in which they operate? In a land where tradition is the foundation of a constant meditation on the contemporary, in an open and glowing osmosis, the works by glass by Muresan tell of this crucial assumption of Romanian culture, in an uninterrupted dialogue between the physical and complete realization of the object, and the vibrant transformation, in constant action, of thought.

If the matter is metamorphosis, the memory changes with it and the artist must take responsibility. The work of Elena Ilash, sculptress, in this sense, is exemplary of a research brave and irreverent. In the myth, to the figure of Janus is ascribed the ability to have two faces, four eyes: two theses to the future, two fixed on the past. He greeted the passing of the seasons, the boundary between the cold and the heat, between the time of sowing and those of the collecting. The sculpture of Ilas is Janus-faced: she has excavated with deep awareness in the origins of language, with a particular focus on the female portrait. He dug in the fairy tale, excavated in the tradition. And she dared to damn them, with a burning desire to escape the

conventions. Thus, the faces of his heroines have the malice of the molten metal, the looks of the unwary challenge of matter; an overwhelming challenge that comes down from her face up to the pedestal, in a scathing remise en question of separation between the work and the base, between the start and end of the vision. We are able to hold their gaze?

6. The painting as personal database-Andrei Ciurdarescu Collect, identify, store, save through the practice of painting: to put back to the world the world, said Alighiero Boetti. Put it back to the world through the painting in an attempt impossible to do it. A gesture of love that for Andrei Ciurdarescu is a painting hectic, fast, full of gestures, actions, surveys, discoveries, activities. Made of the wonder of life. So the artist runs after travel, meetings and abandons in the Atocha station in the Spanish capital; he follows the tracks of history that have stalled on the streets of Lecce, recreating maps and grids of sense, in a bustle of opaque blacks, faded whites, shades of earth and smoke; he paints with the earth, with coal, with the materials of whom is made of life, climbing with painting the Sibillini Mountains. Today peeks Roman gardens, plants laden with leaves, the torpor of the ancient statues that become moss, the modern iconoclastie, the wounds of the great sculpture. He violates the matter of the past, the matter of the present day. Greedy of the things of the world, he puts them back in the world, saving them from oblivion of the frivolous run of men.

7. Forming form-Florin Marin If Ciurdarescu stores images of the real world, tangible, lived and live, Florin builds its own mythology: he digs into colossal forge of human history, where the facts give way to the traditions, and where the forms resists wear of the days, as ancient legends handed down from mouth to mouth. The sculptures of Marin are handed down from material to material, strong in their shared origin, visual archive of away, persistent knowledge. The artist asks the materials, he reads their ability to be storytellers in power, and he translates in forms the hidden messages. Now it is the turn of a tree laden with gifts, elsewhere of objects that belonged to our fathers: forged in bronze and iron, they tell the story of a becoming cautious, entangled in the branches of a tradition that looks out on today, in the company of the mother memory.

8. The beginning of the end, to the beginning-Vlad Capusan Piles of infected materials, toxic, threatening; a scraped ambient; musty smell, the ticking of the water that drips from the old sink. A cry, a gash in the sky: the disaster of modern man whistles and writhes like a plane off course. Animals and men appear in the rubble. The memory is destroyed, we have forgotten the last our truth. The appearance torn in a vision without history. From here begins the climb in the painting of Vlad Capusan; art and life together in the courageous act of the man who

wants to get to the top; and to do it enters deep into the bowels of own volcano of thoughts and visions. More he rises and reaches heights, climber known in his country, more he knows down in the depths of his own fear. And we with him, fascinated and careless in front of the fiery visions, at high temperature, of the last artist who Cluj Calling Project proposes. In a path where history seems on the point of be rewritten, with the vehemence of a brush, the anger of a scalpel, the sudden denial, the exhausted appearance. The materials are damned, in their arduous transcription of the memory of things oblivious of the world. The artist has the task of teaching us to want to see, to want to be, to want to resist.

Born in 1992 in Cluj-Napoca, where she lives and works, is achieving the Diploma in Painting at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca. The research for Bianca Brisan is developed around the concept of tension and trauma, defined as forces that force the man into behaviors imposed from the outside, of whom is necessary, through the practice of painting, being free. The cycles of works punctually analyze this tension, in the first instance by choosing a livid painting, by the dark colors, where the faces seem to stretch and deform oneself, through the matter. In the last phase of research the artist is still working on the concept of the womb, studying her positions in wet and enveloping tissues, and let emerging the shapes of hands, feet, body parts that seek a way out, changing the original image. A painful birth but possible, that becomes a metaphor of the soul and of the body liberated from the conventions, in the trauma of a new oneself reveal.

BIANCA BRISAN

Born in 1990 in Cluj-Napoca, he obtained the diploma and the master’s degree in Painting from the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, where he still lives and works. Vlad Capusan expresses himself in a violent painting, charge of emotions, full of suggestions, at high temperature: the artist started in 2011 a research that provocatively he titled Fragile, dedicated to look for a unusual and provocative beauty in humanity and places outside the ordinary knowledge, thanks to emotional stimuli that come from his experience of high altitude climber, a high risk activity to which his painting, of deep intensity and sublime heights, try to answer. Often mixing natural scenery in urban visions, humanity and abandoned places to piles of materials and objects, the works by Capusan are postmodern visions, where the man is in a perpetual state of transition and challenge with their anxieties and desires.

Born in 1984 in Orastie (Romania), he obtained the diploma, master and PhD in Painting at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca. Winner of a scholarship, currently works at the Academy of Romania in Rome, and he was selected among the young artists of the Visual Arts Prize San Fedele, Milan, 2014-2015. His investigation focuses on a careful analysis and collection of traces left by humanity, choosing places where develop researches that result in cycles of works of great poetry and intensity. Among recent works, are to remember the one dedicated to the Sibillini Mountains and another one dedicated to Lecce, and one for the Atocha train station in Madrid. Depending on the specificity of the place, the actions of direct collection, on the roads, buildings, urban objects, made by Ciurdarescu, with distinct colors and mixes painting, compose each time an album of great human intensity. Currently the artist investigates the persistence of the value of the visual icon, through the investigation of the trauma and violence, or the belonging of it to the place and the time in which the icon was conceived.

Born in 1992 in Brasov (Romania), she lives and works in Cluj-Napoca. She graduated in Painting, she is attending the Master in Painting at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca. Sabina Dragomir faces through the pictorial language the relationship between soul and body, frequently choosing herself as the subject of investigation. Water is the central element in this direction of research, intended it as the original and originating liquid in which the body bends moves and turns, resisting and abandoning its contractions and so revealing its true intention. Starting point are the self-photographs, from which the artist draws portraits that are the source of the canvases on which she paints herself in the tension between being and appearance, with refined pictorial poetry. The last phase of the research sees the attenuation of the palette painting in whites and blacks, which make even more suffused the bodily presence than the spiritual emergence. Another recent path is directed to the study of the shadow of the body, not only as the alterity of the subject painted, but also as the alterity of the viewer that goes in the work and confronts with its identity.

SABINA DRAGOMIR

Born in 1977 in Galati (Romania), she graduated and obtained the master’s degree and the PhD in Sculpture at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, where she lives and works. The sculpture is for Elena Ilash a constant stimulus for reflection on the values of traditional culture iconography, on the figurative instances of their land, analyzed critically and sometimes even with contradictory will, through the exasperation of some parts of the face and body. Choosing frequently female subjects of tradition, Ilash verifies the resistance of a traditional message in the present time, through a leaking, changeable, experimental sculpture, where the depth investigation on the subject’s faces is joined to its immediate negation, designed to reveal other hidden aspects of the ego of the artist in relation to the individual and collective history. The work involves ontologically the concept of sculpture-portrait, transforming the concept of the pedestal in plastic element that interacts with the sculpted face and provokes the identity as a tradition.

ELENA ILASH

Born in 1977 in Galati (Romania), he obtained a diploma and master’s degree in Sculpture at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, where he is currently completing his PhD in Sculpture. The interest of Florin Marin is in two directions: on the one hand the study of plastic materials, with preference for wood and metals as materials originating forms. On the other hand the investigation into the relationship between tradition and innovation that goes through both the materials themselves, both in iconographic choices of the cultural system, studying and deepening the epic forms of his own land through a narrative sculpture of great majesty. The result are works that come from the tradition, yet deny it, through the often distorting and lacerating forms, destined to bring out contradictions for new messages.

FLORIN MARIN

After graduating in Philosophy, Alexandra Muresan, born in 1985 in Cluj Napoca, where she lives and works, obtained the diploma, the master and then the PhD in Glass at the University of Art and Design in Cluj Napoca. Finalist and winner of prizes, she was selected among the artists of the Biennale of Young Artists of Monza 2015, Alexandra Muresan develops a research of great charm, speaking through the ancient and precious technique of glass. The young artist works with this material and with the support of metal meshes, renewing this technique and demonstrating its modernity. The intent is to develop a personal and recognizable language through the making of the glassy forms and germinating works, where nature becomes artifice and vice versa, in a panta rei whenever of surprising beauty.

ALEXANDRA MURESAN
