IAGA Contemporary Art Gallery has the great pleasure to present an important high-class art exhibit centering on the artistic work of internationally renowned artist Herman Nitsch, one of the co-initiators of the controversial movement called Vienna Actionism. Occurring for a rather short period between 1960 and 1970, the main “actionists” were Hermann Nitsch, Günter Brus, Otto Mühl and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. This event essentially equated on a European level with the beginnings of “performance art”, a form of art that implies direct action as a medium for trans-figuring the object in question, through manifestations of violence, vandalism, destruction and other means of action which deviate from traditional artistic practice and the enforced social ethics. The confrontation between artist and material, entailing the live presence of the human figure, scarified animals, verdant elements (expressive apparitions in the illustration of dead nature) represent in the case of Hermann Nitsch the apparatus of an art form perfected over time in the context of an inexhaustible researched topic, the practice and theory of art. Celebration of life is a reoccurring motif combining in a versatile manner painting, happening, stage art, and musical in an au courant endeavor to conceive an “total art” (Gesamtkunstwerk). The Austrian artist envisioned these artistic means of exteriorization beginning in 1960, in the form of a dynamic opus magnum carried out under the name “Orgien Mysterien Theater” (OMT). The showing created by IAGA Contemporary Art Gallery is based on a curatorial work focusing on a video/photographic retrospective of the Gesamtkunstwerk and a joined presentation of Herman Nitsch’s most emblematic work, documented by the artist as a testimony of the period in which these actions took place. Works of art, mixed media, collages, assemblages of numerous “artifacts” evaluated through unmediated sensory experiences by the performances also gain an expressionist content, scouring on the sacrosanct; this dimension is earned through the indestructible ties between man and nature and its appeal to the idea of supreme sacrifice as a fount of existence – a mystical representative phenomenon inspired from the religions and myths of other civilizations. The present showing at Cluj is the result of a strong work of IAGA Contemporary Art Gallery with the precious help of Beatrice Benedetti from BoxArt Gallery, Verona. Currently, the art work and life of the artist Hermann Nitsch is recognized by way of his shows that take place throughout the globe, the two museum’s collections (Nitsch Museum, Mistelbach, Museo Nitsch, Napoli) and a foundation which bears his name ( Nitsch Foundation, Vienna) as well as exhibitions held in several other museums and galleries, such as: MOMA, Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Metropolitan Museum in New York, Tate Gallery London, Albertina and Leopold Museum in Vienna, Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, Kunstahalle in Hamburg, Nationalgalerie in Berlin and many other prestigious artistic centers. The exhibition HERMANN NITSCH.CELEBRATING LIFE, is therefore an important event for international art critics and collectors, confirming IAGA Gallery’s desire to be a living cultural platform whose objectives are those of developing and promoting dialogs between Eastern and Western European contemporary art, thanks to the participation on art fairs, international contemporary art festivals and events, looking for a possible future where international cultural exchange and dialogue is really the foundation upon which we can build long-term artistic projects.

The retrospect showing dedicated to the life’s work of Hermann Nitsch renders the ascent of a prestigious international career with a considerable impact on the art of the 20th century, upheld to this day by its strong connections to various artistic media and wellestablished philosophical and aesthetical systems of thought. Hermann Nitsch revolutionized the artistic world, being one of the advocators of the movement called Viennese Actionism established in 1960, which along with the American movement Fluxus marked the emergence of “performance art” as a subversive form of artistic expression addressing the political and social movements of the time, as well as challenging traditional artistic media. At the same time, the assimilation of other recognized art forms into this exploratory game of Actionism constituted a key moment in the subsequent development of visual language into organized multimedia representation. The outstanding work of Hermann Nitsch is currently presented through an impressive biography, attentively documented and conserved within a foundation and the two museums that bear his name, as well as various other collections worldwide. This is supplemented by the active presence of the artist as a painter, sculptor, graphic designer, performer, writer and composer, or as an author of theater pieces and scenography ‒ integrating elements of his often referenced art work “Orgien Mysterien Theater” (OMT). In terms of the generation and successive transformation of that which we consider to be a transfiguration of the object, starting from the nature of crude material and on towards the conceptual system of Hermann Nitsch’s art, it is intriguing to see the manner in which neonaturalism in painting (painting as action and action as a spectacle) represents a source for the development of this “total work of art” (Gesamtkunstwerk), a reference point for future artistic practices, but also an self-reference for the artist. This “all-embracing art” relates to wide range of concepts and theories derived from ancient, medieval and modern poetry and philosophy (Aristotle, St. Augustine, I. Kant, M. Heidegger, F.Nietzsche and many others) as well as components of psychoanalysis and the work modern composers (e.g. the influence of R. Wagner and A. Schoenberg). His work first emerged in a theoreticized phase (starting with year 1957) and continues with the elaboration of the actual artwork, concentrated in its ensemble, on the discussion of the symbolism of myth as the foundation of understanding of man, from the perspective of the indissolubility between existence and the phenomenon of creation.

An Abyss of Countless Colours Text: Beatrice Benedetti “The world expects to be entertained, but really it needs to be disturbed, disturbed, disturbed. Everything needs to be plunged into the catastrophe of art, my lady!”1 Bernhard Minetti in Minetti (1977) by Thomas Bernhard, Act 1, Scene 2

How is it possible to condense the Gesamtkunstwerk - the universal artwork - of the playwright, composer, philosopher and also visual artist Hermann Nitsch, and make it comestible for those not used to it? The father of Viennese Actionism - together with Brus, Mühl, Schwarzkogler and Rainer - has a truly vast bibliography to which almost a thousand pages on his complete works have recently been added by Walther König. Just three letters are, however, sufficient to take one on an exciting but complex journey: OMT. Which is to say, Das Orgien Mysterien Theater, the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries. This opens up an abyss that is hard to condense. It is one made of light, as well as of darkness – light broken up into an infinite iris of hues and nuances. The dominant tonality of Hermann Nitsch is the chromatic scale of life or, to paraphrase Rudi Fuchs, the “colour of energy”2. What is more, it is a synaesthetic colour, with countless variegations - evolutions of the sanguineous monochrome of the first wrecks - to be savoured not just with the eyes, but also with the temples and nose and lips. So, to sum up, Nitsch’s work is quite simply what is declared by those three letters - in other words, a new form of theatre that represents life without the use of the word. It could be added that, by abandoning the medium of art, this im-mediate form of dramatic art involves the audience by contemporaneously stimulating all their five senses. It condenses human energy and returns it in its every aspect, from the most carnal, atavistic and Dionysian through to the most spiritual, mysterious, Apollonian and, one might say, infinite form. But we should not be deceived by its dual nature: it mimics the all more than its polarity, uninterruptedly absorbing the two registers into its unity. Nitsch’s theatre has neither plot nor lead characters, and everything follows a precise orchestration. In particular, the event really happens, in the more or less conscious sensations of the actors and audience. This means that even the duality between the world and its representation is dissolved in the all, in the mystical mystery, thanks to the excess and intoxication of the senses brought about by Nitsch’s Actions. In them, Eros and Thanatos meet, true to the prototype of classical theatre – which is viewed as a form of religious ceremony with powerful social overtones – in a scenic succession of events, which are themselves grafted onto sturdy philosophical and existential bases. “the primary excess is death and birth at the same time. the PRIMARY EXCESS is the MARRIAGE BETWEEN NOTHINGNESS and ETERNITY”, we read in Nitsch’s note for the 6-Day Action.3 We shall return, however, to the philosophical concepts at the heart of Nitsch’s theatre in the second part of this essay. On the other hand, if we wish to provide an example of Nitsch’s use of duality dissolved in the all in his dramatic art, we need only think of the guttural scream, of mating or fighting, which is as common to primitive man as it is to his contemporary peer. As we have seen, the scream replaces the meaningful word – a scream that is, after all, that of a generation. One need only think of Allen Ginsberg’s poem Howl of 1955, or the shout of the head of the household in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film Teorema of 1968.4 Nitsch alternates the scream or, on the contrary, he has it coexist with the music of the OMT, of which he himself is the composer. It forms part of symphonic scores that reflect the dramatic moments of Greek tragedy as well as the laws of cosmogony. Ultimately, he inserts secret cosmic forces into his own complex theatrical liturgy. What is more, each element aims to bring in the opposites of human conduct: from Homo homini lupus, whose primary instincts put humans on a par with divinities in classical tragedy – the artist concentrates on the incestuous and parricidal, though unaware Oedipus – all the way through to Christ, God made man and crucified for the salvation of humanity in Christian theology. The two “heroes” coexist, thanks to the religious and philosophical syncretism staged by Nitsch in a hypnotising whirlwind of the senses. 1 Minetti, by the Austrian writer and playwright Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989), is one of the classics of twentieth-century theatre. Minetti, who is actually Bernhard Minetti (1905-1998), after whom the play is named, is considered by theatre historians to have been the greatest post-war actor in Germany. The subtitle of the play is A Portrait of the Artist As an Old Man. Performed for the first time in Stuttgart in 1977, directed by Claus Peymann, with Minetti playing himself, Minetti is a play built up around a question: what is the role of art, and of theatre in particular, in modern society? How can the stage still be reflected in the world today? Hermann Nitsch asks himself the same question in his theoretical essays, and even before that he wonders what options are open to philosophy in this age of ours. 2 The exact quotation appears in the essay by Rudi Fuchs entitled Nitsch Chants in the complete works, Nitsch, edited by Michael Karrer and published by Walther König, Cologne, 2015, p. 11. “Nothing is as important to Nitsch as the warm energy of creation (the energy of colour, like blood flowing in the veins), so that he never allowed it to be disturbed or muted by figurative elements. For that reason, we don’t hear any melodic figures in his music either, since they would distract from the flowing, as unceasing as the ocean.” 3 Hermann Nitsch. Das Sechstagespiel, Otmar Rychlik ed., Ostfildern/Ruit, 2003, pp. 24-27 4 For a comparison between Nitsch’s work and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film Teorema, see the essay by Hubert Klocker in Hermann Nitsch e il Teatro, Manfredi Edizioni, 2015, pp. 10-29.

The tableau vivant of the OMT follow on in this antithetical union: the cross, a symbol of sacrifice, appears not unconnected from the riotous orgy, while the soundtrack of the liturgical rite alternates with and superimposes a deafening sound-music onto ethereal or imperceptible melodic movements, exactly as we find in the great theatre of life. There are therefore several dramatic and emotional tones, as well as musical matrices from the epic works of Hermann Nitsch, which all help create his empirical and cathartic interpretation: one need only remember Wagner’s heroic naturalism, Mahler’s pantheist spirituality, the obsessiveness of orthodox litanies and the cheerful marches of popular processions. It is no coincidence that Nitsch’s universe creates subterranean settings for representations that waver between the sacred and the profane. It is therefore a multi-coloured, polyphonic abyss where it seems we can never touch the bottom. Here vitalism and spirituality mix together as one, as indeed they do in the life of the artist, who is himself a high priest and “martyr” of art, and a witness through his own existence of an indistinguishable overlapping of personal life and artistic career. This can be seen in the astonishing punctiliousness with which Nitsch organised and timed his own performances right from the outset. The OMT began to be theorised in the late 1950s and obstructed in his home country throughout the following decade, which drove the artist to move first to Munich, in Germany, and then to cross the Atlantic. In the United States, Nitsch found a fairly warm welcome, thanks to the gestural and performative liveliness of the art and music scene, ranging from Pollock to New Dada, through to John Cage. In 1971, his wife Beate König gave him his microcosm - the castle in Prinzendorf, in the Viennese countryside - a place he had been fascinated by ever since his teenage years. A few years later, Beate perished in a road accident, a tragedy that Nitsch sublimated in a Requiem to accompany some of his theatre Actions. In 1975, the first 24-hour Action was held in Prinzendorf. This was number 50 (50.aktion) and some black-and-white photos have come down to us, and are currently on display at the exhibition in Cluj, which has given rise to this essay. Only years later, in 1998, would Nitsch achieve the economic conditions and a level of fame that would allow him to put on a six-day and six-night Action, number 100 (6 Tagespiel). The background is once again his microcosm - his home and temple to a natural cult that, in its symbolism and duration, took from the biblical Creation of the world. In a more general historical context, the origin of Nitsch’s art is complex, but it essentially derived from his experience of the Second World War at a very young age. It also took from an act of rebellion against the devastating silence that became such a feature of Austria immediately after the conflict. The climate became a sort of stimulus for Nitsch’s overwhelming creative surge and led to an explosive and apparently brutal epic form, which actually captured all the intensity of life, compressing the emotional extremes at its edges, from ecstatic exaltation to savage suffering.

A Way for the Being Text: Beatrice Benedetti “the dilemma of contemporary humans can be seen clearly and vividly. they are unable to cope fully with themselves, to live to the full.”

Hermann Nitsch, Das Orgien Mysterien Theater 2. Theoretische Schriftern, Partitur des 6 Tagespiel, Naples/Reggio Emilia/Munich, 1976

Reflecting on the approach of the general public to Hermann Nitsch’s Gesamtkunstwerk, what sometimes remains in the shadows, or even invisible, is the philosophical foundations of his Actions, and of his paintings and music. This foray into the realm of thoughts can be condensed into the definition of the Mysticism of Being, which he himself coined. “from the very beginning”, theorises Nitch in Das Sein, volume I, “my work, my orgien mysterien theater would not have been possible without your philosophy, religious feeling, or mysticism of being. my artistic efforts were always determined by the form and sensual comprehension of a new kind of theater, a gesamtkunstwerk, and were always interlinked with my philosophical reflections. the latter were to continually find expression in my theater. my use of depth psychology too became a part of this philosophy (thought) or of dramaturgy, playing a role in the ontology of my theater project to a degree.”5 A few pages further on, Nitsch states quite humbly, yet with self-perception, that he is more of a poet (in other words, an artist) than a philosopher: “so please have patience with me and maybe see in me a poet rather than a philosopher who, using an enhanced style of speech, constructs enhanced descriptions of the world, theories of world and being that he considers as true and that are based on his subjective thinking.”6 Despite the partial dissimulation by Nitsch – who prefers to highlight, in writing, his admiration for his predecessors – his philosophical and spiritual foundations are solid and constitute the essential substrate of his artistic creativity. This aspect, which has been less investigated by critics, who have focused more on the formal outcome of these thoughts, is actually the most pressing reason why it is important to sound out the depths of Nitsch and, by means of this model, to redefine the anthropological role of art in the world. An art that aspires to be universal and timeless should indeed include, among its existential themes, what man has always sought: an understanding of the world and the meaning of life, if indeed there is one, and thus also of love and death. It should also include acceptance of tragedy in existence and of the means for overcoming it, as well as the possible ways of entering into contact with transcendence and eternity. Aware of the fact that the search for metaphysical truths in human life has always been through philosophy, as well as through religion, Nitsch decided to start his own artistic journey from his own personal path towards Being. Starting from the concept of Being – Das Sein (or Dasein, literally “being there”, as it relates to “being in the world”), used by Heidegger in the sense of Being individuals bound to our own environment – in Nitsch the term is often used in the broader sense of “existence”. After drafting a list of the many definitions of Being that have come up over the centuries in various philosophical and religious systems, from the Pre-Socratics to Nietzsche, by way of Saint John the Evangelist, Buddha and Lao-tse, it can be said that, by choosing the formula of the father of Existentialism, Nitsch also examines the reason for his own speculation on existence after Heidegger. It should be noted, however, that the German philosopher – who admired Vincent van Gogh in his essay on The Origin of the Work of Art – influenced Hermann Nitsch not only as a maître à penser but also, and especially, in his ethical conception of philosophy. “Heidegger”, reaffirms the philosopher and philosophy historian Franco Volpi, “views and practices philosophy not as just another theoretical activity, as a system of theories and doctrines that are indifferent to life, but rather as an understanding of life that involves a form of life and that gives form to life. Philosophy is not just knowledge, but also a choice of life: it is salvation and redemption.”7

Nitsch thus sees an expansion of knowledge of Being, and constant use of the full potential of Being, as a way towards fully living the moment, as well as an antidote to superficiality and to the temporal political and journalistic superstructures of civilisation. But the artist focuses on the real obstacle to its full implementation: the uncertainty of understanding the world invalidates the optimism of the contemporary individual, and thus also his vitalistic élan. “After the Christian myth faded and many philosophical systems linked to Christian ethics”, we read in some theoretical writings drafted between 1960 and 1976, “and since Christian belief became obsolete, people were wrenched from the security that this understanding of the world had so far given them.”8 And here we find another crucial point: this detachment of contemporary man from religious sentiment has come about because people have “left ethical laws behind that were too elevated and were unfounded, outdated and unusable.”9 The loss of trust in God and in philosophical systems has meant that even scientific language has become merely “a logical, formal experiment” and that philosophy too has degenerated into socio-political considerations.10 This has brought about at least two negative consequences for the psychological hygiene of those who live in what Nitsch refers to as “difficult times”. A predatory, blood thirsty nature is inevitable in contemporary humans, just as it was in prehistoric times. It is just that NOW it is suppressed by social and moral influences. Contemporary humans increasingly rarely manage to channel their excess energy along the path of religion and limit their own being by allowing themselves to be defined by the dictates of what the artist calls “mass repression”. By dissolving moral principles of good and evil only to reconstruct them, the experience of excess frees man from the instinct to subject and dominate his peers with violence. On the other hand, what can bring the contemporary individual back to the optimistic idea of a world within his reach, bridging the gap between the tangible phenomenon and the unknowable noumenon, is a revolutionary philosophy from the roots of which the new cult is born.11 “I am flailing with my hands and feet”, he writes in Das Sein, vol. I, “to not be overwhelmed and to make philosophical

assertions in these difficult times.”12 Nitsch thus continues along a path traced out by his great predecessors – from Aristotle to Schopenhauer, through to the psychoanalysis of Freud and Jung – with the “courage, ignorance or naivety to criticise this path”, in order to reformulate a new natural philosophy, based in a circular manner on Pre-Socratic ideas.13 “This world order, the same for all, no god or man made, but it always was, is, and will be”, we read in the Fragments by Heraclitus.14 Nitsch thus grafts his own theories onto the philosophical and theological systems that came before him, but also onto their fading. Through his own existence, he points to the moral support of dissatisfaction as a great stimulus to live for his equals. The existential optimism championed by Nitsch thus derives from these key concepts. 1. It is possible to gain greater knowledge of the world because the Being coincides with the world, which simply exists. 2. Metaphysics belongs to human nature and transcendence is in immanence, unlike in the Roman Catholic view, which maintains a gap between the two worlds. 3. When fully lived, the Being overcomes space-time limitations in a continuous regeneration of the moment of joy. Nitsch’s natural philosophy, which ultimately deals with existential issues other than morality, overcomes 2000 years of ethics that he today considers obsolete and repressive. And this is where theatre, painting and music come in: in his treatise on the origins of the work of art, Heidegger saw in it an instrument for revealing the Truth, since, due to its essence as a “useless” object, it acts as a link between the object-medium and the Being. Nitsch’s philosophy amplifies this idea, putting forward art as a unique, revolutionary form of worship that can achieve mystical contact in the contemporary world.

Kunsthaus, Zurich, 1983, p. 440. ib. note 8, pp. 165-167. ib. note 8.

An art always viewed as total, to which life itself strives: “the composition, sensitization, intensification and aesthetic ritualization of the course of our lives leads to a gesamtkunstwerk, life itself becomes an artwork, because aesthetically heightened, the form advances life into a celebration.”15 As we have seen, the OMT, a liturgical ceremony that represents life, comes about through the sentiment of sensual intoxication, which automatically destroys the superstructures of the Self, transforming it and it augmenting it in real terms – in an age of virtuality – by means of the psychoanalytical process of abreaction, on the cathartic model of classical theatre. The cult of art mimics ecstasy, by way of tragic pain, in order to give eternity to the moment of joy. Nitsch warns us that practising this existential worship requires a great deal of energy, but it leads to self-realisation and the expansion of one’s own life in the face of rampant superficiality. This belief “calls us to the all-embracing reality of being, which replaced the concept of the god that created the world or incorporates it. form can substitute for the traditional means of cult, liturgy, ritual, prayer, and religious contemplation, and can improve in the sense of heightened consciousness, doing this in parallel and in the context of properly understood demythologization.”16 To conclude, if art is not to be divorced from reality but is to become the religion of life, Nitsch incessantly repeats that the cult of art is interconnected with the Being. This occurs in a celebration in which the symbols, rites and melodies of litany eternally prolong the mystical encounter that takes place in the daily event in which the Being is fully accomplished. Nitsch provides concrete examples of this: the event takes place in a night of passion, in a fleeting state of love, during a walk in the countryside under a starry sky, studying the galaxies… this is the moment when we can grasp the ultimate truths. The form of art is therefore a meditative concentration on existence. But Nitsch makes it clear that understanding the eternal transformation of the world, and of the nature of which we are a part, does not imply that the meaning of life is revealed to man. The development of the world might reveal an eschatological end or, on the contrary, be totally nonsensical. Nevertheless, even if the world were to be totally absurd, Nitsch believes that the only way to live is to be in mystical contact with eternity, in a state of profound union with the metaphysical in our everyday lives. This means that, through the cult of art, or mysticism of the Being, “humanity should move from living outside its possibilities, from a tepid, almost animalistic state of vegetation to an innerness, reaching a state of being that is within its possibilities, and so propel itself into the intensely mystical registration of being by exhausting all its possibilities of understanding being.”17 This is the first great step to be undertaken in order to venture onto the path traced by Hermann Nitsch.

The recollection of the body and the interaction of substances coexist in a synergy of shapes and frames, both types of representations being introduced and induced in the dramatic manner of performance art (throughout the over 140 actions documented, for example: Action n°122, Burgteather, Viena, 2005). Their meanings derive from rituals inspired by Greek and Celtic mythology, Christian and pagan liturgical processions, accentuated by the poignancy of the bios as a preeminent scheme, uninterrupted flow of nature governed entities; in the world of gods and goddesses these rituals takes place in a continuous circuit which commemorates the souls and glorifies the dead, in hope of potential rebirth. This renascence, basically a reactivation of the myth as the foundation of civilization, is in itself a solution which the art of Hermann Nitsch proposes as a means of recovery of life and of the meaning of existence. Within the realm of visual-artistic practices an action is considered to be a metaphor which in its underlying layers indicates the role of human contribution and his (conscious) engagement in the identification of the unconscious (similar to the theory of archetypes of C. G. Jung). Every individual is a potential hero: participating as an actor and spectator at a procession in which the idea of the supreme sacrifice, birth, death and resurrection are reintroduced as crucial moments in the spectacle of life ‒ a matter which coincides with the stage of illumination and great revelations. Drama, essentially of a Baroque nature in its visual-acoustic composition and complexity, recreates scenes of all the founding myths and pagan legends, in which the heroic destiny of the demigods of the ancient tragedies is redeemed with offerings presented to superior authority. The aesthetic of the offering has one particular feature: it becomes the object of worship through the action of sacrifice, crucified to a devouring crowd seeking the atonement of the original sin. In this regard, the artistic vision comes to bear prophetic implications, detached from sacrificial gestures combined with the scenic mounting of still life (a detail reminiscent of the opulent “vanities” painted by the great masters of the 17th century). The repetitive and directed theatrical movement engages entire masses of people sacrificed animals fruits, flowers, etc., all this in a combination of quantities and proportions which in the end are offered to the spectator as a provocation which combines substances, odours, incantations, noise, and atonal rhythms. The action gradually induces a state of excess, overwhelming the senses with throughout the events that go on for three or six days in a row (e.g.: the work in six

zile, domeniul Prinzendorf, Austria, 1998).

days, the Prinzendorf domain, Austria, 1998). There is in this orgiastic theatre an alchemy bearing in itself the seeds of asceticism, together with the total assumption of excess material, by way of the “metabolization” of the body through sacrifice, by way of appealing to mechanisms of recurring victimization; castration, blinding (self) mutilation, crucifixion - all these are occurrences that transfigure the body, stigmatize it and bring it closer to death whilst exerting an ecstatic effect upon one’s vital impulses. At the same time, this “mortification” of the body equates with the transposition of the human soul beyond all possible boundaries considered in a general reality, namely in the status of a martyr. This iconic character of sacrifice is illustrated in the almost symbiotic relationship between the inert body of the victimized animal and human anatomy, enlivened by passion and hunger. The palpitations of the soul, the ancestral desire for penetration and other primary instincts, are simultaneously experienced in the spectacle of the artistic work. Structured communication between body masses, the merger of human and animal generates a gigantic anthropomorphic body, which through its mystical charge, turns the whole depiction into an ideal situation making symbolic redemption of life possible again. This situation addresses among others, the scapegoat motif and its role as a peacemaker within the communities. Love and death are key features in the exploitation of true feelings and the expression of fulfilled destiny. The simulation of death occurs by forcing the limits which the love of the other recognizes, in its conceptual approaching to the myths of Dionysus, Attis or Orpheus, the passions of Christ, Abraham’s sacrifice, or by sharing rituals inspired by the birth and resurrection celebrated in the rituals dedicated to Mother Goddess Cybele. The artist bestowed with a shamanic power is interposed between the real and the supernatural word. The significance of this interposition is similar to the incursion of Orpheus into the world of Hades, or that of Dante into the Inferno, engaging in a superhuman battle for the recovery of the living. The Creator assumes, in a symbolical manner ‒ the task of unleashing the abeyant forces that lie in the subconscious, sacrificing and being left overwhelmed, in the cycle of endless birth and death, in an arduous and lengthy process of ritual, of exerted gestures, all induced by a trance upon all surfaces, garments and bodies. He upholds thus through successive and laborious procedures the different faces of a human drama unfolding in numerous acts.

Text: Georgeta Olimpia Bera

The founding myths adjacent to the Christian processions represent a cultural aggregate to which the artist has recourse when he imagines the underground architecture of OMT, reminiscent of the ancient city of Rome, which amassed the European and Asian pagan mythologies, by virtue of creating a universal cult, centred around man and the miracle that is his life. The liberation of forces takes place through the sustained provocation of the senses, through the exacerbated drives and awakening of instincts, phenomena which reactivate the cathartic function of collective engagement. The destructive component, which is exerted on the object and on its functional aspect, equally transforms the body ‒ which entails a form of aggression on the vitality and integrity of the persona. The object and the body (as object) are part of the whole proceeding, the place of artistic expression where they represent themselves and portray themselves on the path of producing works of art. The reliquaries which capture this significant material consistency are displayed as an emblematic collection in the development of the work of Hermann Nitsch, being the single, tangible testimony attesting the ceremonial and ritual connotations (in painting, drawing, installation, ready-made, performance, etc.).

Graphic drawing, spontaneous or silk-screening, defines an underground structure, entangled, deciphering the insides of an underground Goddess. Human representations overlapping and annihilated by the presence of this architecture are inspired by biblical scenes (Das Letzte Abendmahl, 1976-79; Grablegung, 2006‒2007) and from the era of the Crusades (Die Eroberung von Jerusalem, 1971), presenting a mirror for this “impossible” theatre of the world. The graphic design for OMT is, in itself, a utopia of images and autonomous sequence of the work of Hermann Nitsch. The theatre as a spectacle of life will bring to the forefront the power – extensively discussed in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche – and also the vulnerability, a specific trait of all species. These two cases show in turn, that in various stages of a human’s presence in the world there are major aspects in the social construct of existence. “The weakness of the flesh”, a paradigm extensively debated by Christian dogma and whose cure is found in the mystery of the Eucharist, correlated with the amassing of neuroses by modern societies as a result of repression generated amid tragedies. Hermann Nitsch’s work itself sets off from the idea of division and annihilation in the context of the individual modelled by society. The inadaptability in front of the never ending string of governing regimes or the war of absurdity are phenomena issuing great impact on the psyche. The Freudian method and the theory of the libido are embraced in performance art by appealing to violence, which in the field of art is displayed by a release of repressed forces which fall on the bystander and to oneself, in an “informal” movement.

The word is a virus, that has never been recognized as such because it has reached a relatively stable state of symbiosis with its human host. I don’t think a further critical analysis of the works of the author Nitsch is needed here, an in-depth look into how action is a performative act in real time, that the audience cannot avoid, in which it is forced to feel shame, surprise, disgust, excitement, participation. We’ve seen how the artist dresses his body in an objectual relationship, how the corporeal geographies are redefined, on the vision of the body in images of flesh and blood, tribute, catharsis, wounds and scars. This sort of reappropriation of the body through the mixing of bodies, excrement, paint, objects, human and animal material. In ‘Millepiani’, Deleuze and Guattari write of the body: ‘in any case you have one or many. On it we sleep, stand vigil, fight, win and are won by, we find our place, we get to know unprecedented states of happiness, penetrate and are penetrated by, we love’. A stirring that should not be lost in different times, in a society geopolitically reconstituted around a web, where our senses are reorganized in pallid vertigo, where deadly suicide is today’s principal tendency. Where sight, taste, sense of smell and hearing have digital extensions that constitute a new body, where noises of the former are lost, a repertoire of whispers, whimpers, whining, irreproducible smells, extemporary, mnemonic, in the substitution with an aseptic white de-involvement. Now that our organisms are precipitating in a collapse by excess of protection of our own integrity, we need the artistic language, a virulent kind of artistic language. We see that the identity reaction of the organism can lead to its death or at the very least to its dysfunction by the defense of the integrity of our feeling part of this world. Therefore there’s something that we need to hear and learn: that sometimes abandonment, forgetting, dis-identity in the contact with the biological, ethnic, carnal, bionic and imaginary other, can be salvific. This is what I want to believe can be discussed in this catalogue, that art must be able to create awareness as well, and this is what I believe can be discussed in this important event organised by the IAGA gallery in Cluj Napoca, honored that the project addressed to the artist Hermann Nitsch has found here its development and its actualization.

Celebrating Life is an artistic array with a retrospective character as well as an interrogation of present time from the perspective of human existence. Cultural elements, such as: European and Asian myths, Christian ideology and Buddhism ‒ already amassed in the art forms explored by Hermann Nitsch ‒ are re-assembled in an organic universe, this time also confronted with a contemporary reality based on increasingly technologized processes, which mediate the relationship between man and the universe. In a society of dramatic display, an event is a phenomenon growing increasingly isolated from actual “living”: the world becomes an abstract space, a virtual reality and a second kind of nature that separates human existence from direct experience and its active engagement. The estrangement of the individual from the world becomes permanent with the myriad of technological substitutes, through which the simulacrum undermines the cognitive-affective potential and deprives the action of the intellect, thus deepening the rift between the individual and its self-awareness. Estrangement, fused in a neurotic society in which control mechanisms with tendencies to acquire a pronounced psychological control over the individual and the masses, is set face to face with an integrating vision of life, which in the work of Hermann Nitsch is expressed by the gauge of experiences consciously lived in the mind of the individual and a collective. The Heideggerian concept of Dasein, term defining being as existence in and for itself is expanded in art by asserting a “state of excellence”, fundamental to the integrity of being and opposing a vegetative and self-sufficient condition: the experience lived at a present time (a temporal suspension) is a means to discover a mythical identity within each individual, with recognition of the inextricable links between body and soul. The controversial vision of Hermann Nitsch is sparked by the radicalized form acquired by the image and the artistic manifestation itself, through the antithesis between the Apollonian state (defined by F. Nietzsche as a contemplative, meditative state of harmony and balance) and the euphoric Dionysian state, based on impulses of passion, exaltation and disorder. The artist ponders on the effect of passions and the purifying act of violent manifestations in the controlled setting suitable for emotional outpouring.

Text: Sabina Elena Dragomir

The creative spirit speaks about his relationship with the universe, the viable tension that can be transmitted, felt, concentrating his entire effort of creation on personal senses, and the Creation represents the principle of “taking”, of “observing” and of “giving” forward.

Artist Hermann Nitsch proposed during his entire artistic creation, from the beginning until now, an issue orbiting the rediscovery of its own identity in a contemporary society viewed from a perspective of constant individual “self-resuscitation”. We obsessively meet this game between innate or acquired, exterior and interior, natural and artificial. The body disappears as entity, the “border” between the outside and inside becoming, paradoxically, a way of access, not of defense, leaving free the connection between intimacy and the outside world. The body exists in its immediate envelopment. The skin is just an interface, a communication channel and not a protective one, constantly letting in the “exterior”. The work of Hermann Nitsch brings in front of the public a monumental artistic creation, in which the audience is led, through different ways, in a maze full of strong views and philosophical loads, allowing us to understand that we, the inhabitants of this “world” are made of the same primordial elements, by which we create desires, secrets - the alchemy to which are all succeeding.

And He, the Man, has no choice: he must be the Creator of his own Life in a continuous struggle, exhausting effort and, maybe someday, we will accede to know ourselves better.

Text: Georgeta Olimpia Bera

Painting, according to the vision of Hermann Nitsch, represents a medium for the denial of object representation, in so far as the action, as a direct way of usage, or as a way of revelation of the object, confers it a privileged function in the game of surfaces and the theatrical portrayals. Harshly nonverbal, this pictorial experience, once isolated through the moment of action inside the artwork, it has evident influences related to abstract expressionism, matierism and tachisme art. The painting process, situated under the theatrical auspices and spontaneous interventions, retains conversely a certain sensuality under the pictorial influence of E. Schiele, G. Klimt or O. Kokoshka. Colour, beyond its symbolic predilection in the treatment of red, the depths of black or supersaturation of purple, has a privileged place in the delimitation of surfaces and is released in this game of languages, of the role it would have in a traditional depiction of form. Colour is form and the system of objects through its colour and build, constitute a decisive form in the structuring of the ensemble. Excluding the situations which target the clearly pictorial intentions as a constituent part of the creative approach, shades and tones present in the painting of Hermann Nitsch claim the pure state of matter and its organic nature, in various qualities and stages of aggregation of the chosen substances: tellurium, fluid, humoral. Permeating fabrics and garments with these materials attest above all the identity of the object – a relic which significance remains encrypted in the exhausted moment of the procession.
