DINING DINING

Malone’s: A Maple Grove Staple

It’s the place we all go when we want to see someone we know - Malone’s Situated right off Main St and Elm Creek Blvd this neighborhood spot that boasts delicious food, a vibrant, bustling atmosphere and more community spirit than a high school pep rally. Malone’s has been an integral part of the Maple Grove community since opening its doors in 2010

Mastering the “Small-Town” Vibe

One of the Malone’s owners is AJ Stevens, whose passion for hospitality and community engagement runs deep.

In a recent conversation, AJ shared that his love for the restaurant world was ignited at a young age when he helped his family open Maynards in Rogers Watching the sense of community that bloomed around Maynards AJ dreamed of creating something similar something that felt like h That dream became a reality with the opening of Malone’s. “I always I wanted a place that resembled the strong community atmosp that I grew up with,” AJ said. “Maple Grove needed a place like that

The Story Behind Malone’s

AJ and his partners opened Malone’s with the belief that a great resta does more than just serve good food, it becomes part of the fabric o town Inspired by the success of Maynard’s, Malone’s set out to not deliver outstanding meals and exceptional service but also to give Their motto? “The more you give, the more you get.” Whethe supporting youth sports teams, hosting community fundraiser donating gift cards and event space to local causes, Malone’s has

Malone’s has consistently gone above and beyond. AJ himself has even donated his Minnesota Wild tickets for chamber raffles! Their generosity hasn’t gone unnoticed Malone’s is a longtime supporter of the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce, consistently saying "yes" to community needs. It’s this kind of dedication that makes small businesses like Malone’s the heartbeat of our neighborhoods.

Weathering the Storm

DINING DINING

Like many restaurants, Malone’s faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic But their resilience was nothing short of remarkable With indoor dining shut down, they quickly adapted by launching a makeshift drive-thru a first in their history. With no dedicated window or outdoor system, Malone’s staff took orders in the parking lot and hand-delivered meals from the kitchen to each car “It wasn’t easy,” AJ recalls. “But we did what we had to do to keep serving our community.” This adaptability and commitment to service has always been part of Malone’s DNA and continues to fuel their ongoing success

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter

AJ Stevens is bringing the spirit of Malone’s to a new community but not just any location In 2025, he plans to open what he affectionately calls a “divey Malone’s” in the nearby city of Hanover, reviving the beloved Hilltop Bar. For those who know, the Hilltop is more than just a bar it’s a local legend. Known for its unbeatable burgers and no-frills charm, the Hilltop also holds a special place in Minnesota music history Rumor has it that Bob Dylan himself hosted private concerts there, adding a layer of mystique to a place already rich with community stories and character The idea came to life at the 2025 State of the Cities Luncheon, hosted by the I-94 West Chamber at Rockwoods in Otsego. There, AJ learned of the Hilltop vacancy and immediately connected with city officials to bring his vision to life. The upcoming restaurant promises to blend the nostalgic charm of the Hilltop with Malone’s signature community-first spirit. It’s a revival of a local icon, led by someone who understands the power of food, friendship, and showing up for your community

From Maple Grove to Hanover, AJ Stevens and Malone’s continue to prove that food tastes better when it’s served with heart- making Malone’s a true Chamber legend. Minnesota ranked #5 as the best state to live in the U.S.

Minnesota produces the 6 most patents per capita making it one of the most innovative states in the nation. th

Minnesota ranks 33 for starting a business. rd

Minnesota ranks 45 for overall business tax climate. th

Minnesota ranks 35 for small business. th

Minnesota is known for its educated workforce and strong quality of life, yet recent data suggests that these strengths aren’t always translating into meaningful economic growth. A new report from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce reveals a paradox: while Minnesota ranks among the top states for innovation and livability, it’s also seeing slower job growth in key sectors and a decline in domestic migration. As the state’s workforce ages and shrinks, business leaders and policymakers must focus on boosting productivity, innovation, and workforce development to maintain our competitive edge

HRelaxation With Purpose:

How Cristina Nolte is Redefining SelfCare in Maple Grove

Cristina Nolte has long been a proud Maple Grove resident, but it wasn’t until 2019 that she made the leap from corporate life to entrepreneurship, opening Spavia Day Spa –Maple Grove Only after years of traveling for work, hopping between cities, staying in hotel rooms, and finding the occasional moment of calm in a spa, did Cristina realize how essential it was to intentionally carve out time to relax and recharge Those fleeting moments of peace became the inspiration for a bigger vision: bringing accessible, affordable luxury spa experiences to her own community.

Just one year after opening, the COVID-19 pandemic hit; a test no new business owner could have anticipated. As a spa rooted in close-contact services, Spavia had to pivot quickly to maintain safety, rebuild trust, and meet clients’ changing needs Cristina leaned into the challenge, implementing health protocols while still preserving the calming, rejuvenating atmosphere that had already made Spavia a local favorite But she also noticed something else happening: people were craving human connection, touch, and a peaceful space to unwind more than ever before. And Spavia was ready to offer just that

From day one

Cristina knew that success wouldn’t come from just offering great services, it would come from creating community. That’s why she joined the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce early in her business journey “Being a part of the Chamber made me more in tune with what’s happening locally than I ever was in the corporate world,”

Cristina shared “It’s about finding your people and other business owners who collaborate, support one another, and make the entire community stronger.”

Through her Chamber involvement, Cristina has not only built brand recognition for Spavia but also forged meaningful relationships with local leaders and organizations. It’s even opened the door to advocacy connecting her with elected officials like Representative Kristin Robbins to discuss important industry topics, such as the lack of state-required licensing and background checks for massage therapists (Minnesota is one of the few states without a statewide massage license requirement)

Cristina has cultivated a team-centered, growth-oriented culture. Her estheticians, massage therapists, and guest advisors aren’t just there to provide services, they also provide exceptional, personalized care Spavia is nationally recognized for continuous innovation, and Maple Grove is one of the brand’s topperforming locations. In fact, Cristina’s spa is part of Spavia’s national task force that is granted the ability to test out new treatments like salt therapy, cupping, lash lifts, and seasonal facials before they’re rolled out to other locations “Our team loves having new services to offer It keeps things exciting for them and creates an environment of continuous learning,” Cristina said. “That translates into better service and deeper satisfaction for our guests”

Spavia’s membership model makes it easy and affordable for guests to make wellness a regular part of their lifestyle. With flexible options and rotating seasonal services, the spa encourages self-care not just for special occasions, but for everyday well-being Cristina often reminds guests, “You wouldn’t expect perfect results from just one trip to the gym, so why would you expect one facial or massage to solve it all?”

She’s also passionate about breaking the stereotype that spas are just for women “Men love facials too,” she laughed “They have skin, they get stressed it’s for everyone” That inclusive approach has helped grow a loyal client base of all genders and ages.

Spa’s aren’t just for women, men love facials too. - Cristina Nolte

Beyond the Spa Walls

Cristina stays committed to giving back Through the Spavia Cares program, she’s partnered with nonprofits like Hope Chest for Breast Cancer, dedicating full spa days where a portion of proceeds supports their mission These partnerships reinforce Cristina’s belief that wellness can be so much more impactful when the community gets behind you It’s not just an individual journey.

Looking forward, Cristina’s long-term goal is for Spavia to become the first place people think of when they want a spa day in the northwest metro And she wants her amazing team many of whom have been with her since the beginning, like her right-hand Peggy to grow alongside her.

“There are tough days when you question everything,” Cristina admitted “But then there are the days when you realize the impact you're making on your team, your clients, your community and it’s all worth it”

With deep local roots, a heart for service, and a vision that keeps evolving, Cristina Nolte isn’t just running a successful spa, she’s leading a movement of sustainable, community-focused wellness right here in Maple Grove
