CE FOREWORD

Wow, what a great summer it promises to be! After a fantastic spring of weather, we are all looking forward to a good summer, but it’s the cows that have us most excited. Demand for dairy stock is sky high and promises to remain so as there is a lack of replacements in the system and huge demand locally and internationally for dairy stock. Lets make hay while the sun shines!

The first of the IHFA events for the year give us hope for a good summer program. The showmanship classes have been really well attended. Our club conference and AGM where excellent events, thanks to those who attended and contributed. I’m expecting the summer shows, particularly the YMA shows, to get record participation this year.

I want to welcome our new President, Mary Rafferty, who took office at the AGM. Mary is a fantastic servant of the breed and the Breffni Oriel Club. She is a really deserving President. Also, our President-Elect, Leo Nulty, of the North Eastern Club will be a great follow-up.

We also are very luck to have a new Chairman in Mike Laffan. Mike has served on the board for a number of years to great effect and has been a great asset to the Limerick-Clare Club as well as a life-long breeder, along with his wife Margaret. The organization is in great hands with Mike leading an engaged and committed team on the board.

I look forward to a summer of growth: Grass, Markets, Youth, the Holstein-Friesian breed and IHFA. In that vein, this journal has a few important things: our Focus Farms, which is growing in importance and has been well received. Also new top animal lists: High EBI youngstock and high PTA Type youngstock. We continue to celebrate the diversity of the breed.

Sincerely

Males MUST be SIRE & DAM VERIFIED – for breeders participating in the National Genotyping programme (NGP) and have sent back all 2024 samples, the 2024 male animal will be genotyped and the cost of registration will be €40 once sire and dam are verified.

For breeders not participating in NGP the cost of registration will be €40 plus €24 to genotype the calf plus €24 to genotype the dam (if she is not already genotyped) .

Registration Errors and how to avoid them

What is SRM?

SRM means that a bull is on the supplementary register. He is not pedigree. Please note, some bulls, although having an FR code may in fact be crossbred.

Be Aware - Protect Your Herd’s Pedigree Status

When choosing a sire from AI, do not assume that all bulls are pedigree registered. Always check with your provider before purchasing straws.

SRM bulls may be up to 100% Holstein Friesian but are not backed by pedigree lines.

How does this affect the status of offspring?

If you use an SRM sire on a pedigree cow, the progeny do not qualify for pedigree status. How this affects future generations in the herd depends on the sex of the offspring. Female progeny will be graded ASR and generations of pedigree bred lines will be disrupted.

The same does not apply for males. An SRM sire will result in male offspring being graded SRM. The consequences of this will impact future generations as EU Breeding Rules do not allow grading up through the male line.

FRX Blue Card

There have been a number of incidences recently where pedigree registered animals are issued blue cards with FRX as the breed instead of FR.

The Department of Agriculture have indicated that it is possible to update a full Pedigree animals blue card if it has FRX as the breed in error

To do so:

• Contact your local DVO

• Produce the pedigree cert showing full animal pedigree

• Complete form ER94(b)

Timing of Pedigree Certificates IHFA Member Services

Herdbook certificates are currently issued to members for their recently registered animals on a pre-existing interval basis. In a new development, members can now select the timing that best suits their individual preference for printing certs. The options available are:

1. Default (continue with pre-existing frequency), 2. Monthly or 3. 6 monthly. Tick the box that best suits your preference.

THURSDAY 10TH JULY 2025

The Greenan Family would like to invite you to the IHFA National Open Day, following that, their Celebratory Sale with World Renowned and Home Bred Pedigrees available, there is something to offer for everyone!

THURSDAY 10TH JULY, 2025

STARTS AT 11.00AM

GREENLEA HOLSTEINS CROSSHUGH, MONAGHAN,

Thursday, 10th July

The IHFA National Open Day comes to Greenlea Holsteins

The IHFA is delighted to announce that the National Holstein Friesian Open Day 2025 will take place on Thursday, 10th July at the renowned Greenlea Holsteins, located in Crosshugh, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan. This prestigious event promises to be a highlight in the agricultural calendar, offering a chance to visit one of the most celebrated and successful pedigree Holstein herds in the country.

A Story of Resilience

Greenlea Holsteins is home to Padraic Greenan, his wife Paula, and their children Ryan, Hannah, and Zoe. A third-generation farmer, Padraic took over the reins from his father Jim and mother Mairead in 2004, continuing their legacy of dedication to dairy farming.

The Greenlea herd’s pedigree journey began in 1995, when it was graded up under Padraic’s encouragement, with the help of Bobby Franks. However, tragedy struck just two years later, when the herd was completely depopulated due to BSE. Undeterred, the Greenan’s rebuilt their herd with cattle bought from two local herds. Disaster struck again in 2000, requiring yet another complete depopulation. True to form, the family rebuilt once more. This time importing stock from France, s by David Clarke (cows.ie), 38 cows that laid the foundation of today’s successful herd. Remarkably, some of these original cow families remain.

A Family Affair

Family is central to operations at Greenlea. While Padraic is one of five siblings—with three brothers living in Ireland and a sister in the UK— his entire family plays an active role in the farm’s daily life. Despite their off-farm jobs, Padraic’s brothers are closely involved in farm operations.

Padraic himself worked full-time off-farm until 2011, employed by CombiLift, a forklift manufacturing company. Since then, his focus

Nutrition and Land

The herd is fed a TMR blend year-round, buffer-fed during summer months, consisting of maize and grass silage. While Padraic prefers to keep the diet simple, he now consults with Morgan Sheehy of Devenish Nutrition for guidance.

The grazing platform spans approximately 65 hectares, comprising of both owned and rented land.

Building a World-Class Herd

Greenlea currently milks 100 cows. Milking is done through a 20-unit Dairymaster swingover parlour with sequential bailing, with the herd monitored round-the-clock using CowManager technology.

The Greenlea herd includes prominent cow families such as Rhapsody, Apple, Katrina, Pledge, Roxy, and Aiko. In recent years, Padraic has further enhanced herd genetics, investing in lines from internationally renowned cows including:

Jeffrey-Way Spunky Red P

Floydholm MC Emoji

Lovhill Goldwyn Katrysha

Duckett G Chip Tokyo

Richardo Dundee Dawnette

Fraeland Goldwyn Bonnie

The breeding programme is focused on imported US and Canadian genetics, with 90% of inseminations using sexed semen, and the remainder from beef AI sires (primarily Angus and Belgian Blue). Calving season runs from late October through May.

Sales and Club Involvement

Greenlea sells around 50 fresh heifers annually through Carnaross and Ballybay marts, as well as through private sales. The family are longstanding members of the Breffni Oriel Holstein Friesian Breeders Club, actively competing in the herds competition since its establishment. Starting in the Intermediate section, they’ve progressed to the Premier section—winning the inspection title twice. Padraic has also made valuable contributions to the wider Holstein Friesian community, serving as Chairman and Treasurer of the club and representing the region on the IHFA board.

Award-Winning Show Success

Greenlea Holsteins has recently enjoyed tremendous success in the show ring. In their first attempt, they won the Over 80 Cow Section of the IHFA National Herds Competition in 2024, along with the Judges’ Choice Prize —an achievement the family holds with great pride.

Their crowning glory came when Greenlea MG Rhapsody, was named Diageo Baileys Champion Cow 2024. At nine years old, she was the oldest cow in the ring and earned the Diageo Baileys Protein Award and Exhibitor-Bred Champion titles as well—a remarkable local win for the Breffni Oriel club and a very proud day for the whole Greenan Family. Other show successes include:

Champion of the Breffni Oriel Calf Show two years running (2022 and 2023) with Cedarmore Handsome Pocahontas and Greenlea Doc Tokyo

Honourable Mention at the National Calf Show 2023 with Greenlea Kalo Oceane

A New Chapter Begins 22nd October 2025

The Irish Pure Friesian Club is delighted to announce a landmark event taking place on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025 at Kilkenny Mart – the inaugural Seminar and Showcase Sale.

Responding to growing enthusiasm and logistical constraints around the traditional Open Day, this new event format offers a fresh way to gather breeders, customers, and enthusiasts under one roof. Designed as both a platform for learning and a celebration of our breed, the day features four expert panel discussions covering topics central to the British Friesian community: our history, on-farm financial insights, emerging breeder talent, and breeding programme progress. Each panel is supported by an industry sponsor, ensuring real-world relevance and lively discussion. Afternoon panels will be followed by refreshments, trade stands, and networking opportunities. The day will culminate in an evening parade and showcase sale, open to all club members to sell any age stock meeting the 87.5%+ Friesian requirement. This is an exciting opportunity to highlight quality animals to a targeted and engaged audience.

Dinner will be served at Langtons, Cillin Hill, offering a relaxed setting to reflect, connect, and plan for the future. Whether you're a breeder, buyer, or simply passionate about British Friesians, this is a must-attend event. Mark your calendars for October 22nd – and join us in shaping the next chapter of the Irish Pure Friesian story.

Jim & Brenda Murray - Derrinsallow Herd - Co Tipperary

On the Tipperary/Offaly border near Birr, Jim Murray and his wife Brenda manage the Derrinsallow Herd. The farm has been in the family since the 1950s, and Jim, a second-generation farmer, currently milks 72 cows through a 12-unit herringbone parlour. With the help of their two daughters when home from Cork, the family completed calving by April 22nd this year. Jim predominantly uses AI, with dairy stockbulls cleaning up the final three weeks. Surplus heifers are sold through his spring sale in Birr Mart or privately off-farm. Jim is very proud to have bred 5 bulls in AI. A highlight was breeding popular AI sire, Derrinsallow 812 Arthur (DSU), who has over 3,000 pedigree-registered offspring in Ireland. The herd has been 100% homebred since grading up in 2005 and includes strong cow families like the Alices and Agneses. Breeding decisions are made with a sharp focus on improving fat and protein percentages, alongside herd health and EBI targets. Jim is looking to improve herd production, moving towards €100 Milk Sub Index. Jim uses eight AI bulls annually from both Progressive Genetics and Dovea. An IHFA Master Breeder in 2023 and 2024, and the 2009 Teagasc National Heifer Rearing Champion, Jim continues to build on a strong pedigree foundation with a careful eye for production, longevity, and health traits.

Father-son duo Henry and Sam Dudley run the Dekeana Herd of 82 pure Friesians, named after the river that flows near their farm. Sam, now in his final year studying Ag Science at UCC, represents the next generation at Dekeana. Influenced by Henry’s cousin Trevor (Kilsunny Herd) to embrace the Pure Friesian Breed, the herd includes strong families like the Blossoms (from Michael Spillane, Mountain Herd), the Lil’s (from Bill O’Connells Rossline Herd) and the Savory’s (from Bill Trousdell, Ardhu Herd). Using nearly all sexed semen for first services, followed by limited conventional and beef AI, the Dudleys also utilise an Angus stockbull. With a strict culling policy for bad feet, poor fertility, and milking speed, their goal is to maintain a herd that can be fully classified. The cows are fed 1.1 tonnes of ration annually via the parlour, plus approx. 60-ton of a beet-maize blend in the Spring.

The herd currently follows a 20% autumn and 80% spring calving pattern, with plans to move fully to spring for better labour efficiency. They milk in a 12-unit Delaval parlour with individual feeders. This years bull team consists of Bradash Patriot Red (FR8199), Laharn Bruno (FR9816) and Bradash Trailblazer (FR1512) all sexed semen. Then Lismulligan Excalibur (FR4424) and Firoda Centurion (FR2030) conventionally. With careful breeding and commitment, the Dudleys continue to refine a robust, fertile Friesian herd.

PJ Brennan - Monataggart Herd - Co Waterford

PJ Brennan, along with wife Tracey and children Éile and Seán represents the fourth generation farming the Monataggart Herd in Co. Waterford. With 76 spring-calving cows, PJ took over the reins in 2011. Inspired by the IHFA stand at the National Ploughing Championships, he graded up the herd in 2022, backed by years of reliable milk recording and data. The Monataggart herd is 100% Spring calving, starting around 25th Jan with 85/90% calving within the first 6 weeks. Cows went out by day on February 25th and by night from March 12th. The herd is milked through a 12-unit Fullwood parlour with ACRs. About 1.2 tonnes of concentrates are fed annually, along with 30–40 tons of beet in spring. PJ uses a mix of sexed, conventional, and Angus/Belgian Blue AI, rearing the Belgian Blue calves on an outside block. AI sires are selected predominantly for Milk Solids, a minimum of 33kgs combined. Then looking at percentages of fat & protein with a Milk figure of +€100

Fifteen replacement heifers are kept annually. Tail paint is used for heat detection. PJ farms with help from his mother Helen and neighbour Seamus, who supported the farm since PJ’s father John’s time. Since 2016, PJ has modernised the infrastructure significantly, adding cubicles, a slatted tank, PV panels, and increased feed space, all while championing cow families like the prolific Jameys.

Michael McNamara - Barna Herd - Co Cork

Michael McNamara, alongside his daughters Rachel and Emma, manages the 200-cow Barna Herd in Newtownshandrum. Supplying Kerry Agribusiness, the family operates a 120-acre grazing platform with 260 calvings annually and 100 replacement heifers reared. Originally starting with 36 cows in 2004, Michael and wife Liz previously managed separate herds before relocating. Michael’s mother still supports operations, as Michael’s home farm in Caherconlish, Co. Limerick acts as the heifer-rearing block.

The Barna herd is fully spring-calving. Breeding strategies focus on fertility, milk solids, and overall production. Tail paint is used for heat detection, and a feed-to-yield system guides feeding in the parlour. Sexed semen is used extensively—100% for heifers and 80% of cows during the first three weeks, with a move to conventional thereafter.

Beef bulls clean up. The Jills, Angels, Ingrids, and Cleanas form the core cow families. Influential sires like Cogent Twist, Co-op Bosside Massey, Peak Mr Grey and Westcoast Perseus have shaped the herd.

2019 was a very memorable year for the McNamara family. Years previous Michael and his brother John took a trip over to the Woodmarsh herd in the UK where they purchased 3 calves. Fast forward to 2019, one of those calves, now a 5 year old, Woodmarsh Cancun Lyme 2 was reserve champion at Charleville, Champion at Limerick and Reserve Champion at Millstreet. She was also crowned Best Cow in the Limerick Clare herds competition. Lyme is pictured on the top right photo, dry, ahead of her 7th calf. The Barna Herd won 1st place in the Elite Spring section of the 2024 National Herds Competition—a testament to years of family dedication.

TJ & Ryan Meegan - Munta Herd - Co Louth

Just outside Dundalk, TJ and Ryan Meegan run the Munta Herd—a 300-cow spring-calving operation with a strong focus on fertility, simplicity, and profitability. The herd moved from a split-calving system to 100% spring in 2022, reducing labour demands and improving fertility. Last years’ empty rate was just 8%, with 90% AI’d within three weeks. Cows calve from early February through April and typically turn out by February thanks to dry ground conditions. The herd is milked through a 20-unit swing-over Delaval parlour, with cows monitored via Sensehub collars. All Dairy AI is Conventional with no sexed semen used on farm, they are also moving away from using beef semen due to increased gestation length. Six home bred high-EBI bulls (all over €300) are retained each year for maiden heifers. Genomic testing has played a central role in selecting replacement heifers for the past three years. TJ established the Munta prefix, having taken over the farm originally purchased in the 1950s. The family now keeps around 100 calves annually to service age. They’ve also bred successful AI bulls, including Munta Mystic, who boasts 1,300+ daughters across 400 herds. With a diet feeder used from September to April, and a focus on balance between solids and milk yield, the Munta Herd stands as a model of modern, efficient dairying.

Maurice Harty - Ballylongane Herd - Co Kerry

With outstanding coastal views of Ballyheigue Strand, Maurice Harty and his family operate the Ballylongane Herd, established in 1968 by Maurice’s father Martin. Today, Maurice, along with his wife Geraldine and their three children, manage a herd of 100 milking cows with 170–180 calvings per year. The split-calving system allows for a winter calving break from early November to mid-December, with spring calving resuming in mid-January. Their land supports grass, spring barley, and beet, with 80% of cereals and beet retained for feed. Cows are diet-fed for much of the year using beet, straw, silage, homegrown barley, and a protein balancer. Bulls are chosen based on Maurice’s ideal cow: highyielding, fertile, powerful, and plenty of protein. He places emphasis on positive Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and linear traits. Sexed semen is used in two-thirds of inseminations, complemented by Angus and Hereford bulls for calf sales at six months. Notable cow families include the Peitje’s, Martha’s, Mary’s, Ravens, Lulus and Princesses, with recent additions like the Fames and Papooses. Maurice says that the most influential sire used in recent times is SSI PR Renegade, he has used a lot of Renegade himself but also his sons Parfect and Trooper and Grandson Cirrus P. The herd is milked through a 16-unit DairyMaster parlour and benefited from early turnout this April thanks to fine weather.

Stock Judging and Reason Giving Workshop

We kicked off our 2025 season with a Stock Judging and Reason Giving workshop on the 12th of April on the Cleary Family Farm in Co.Tipperary. The day began with a demonstration from Pauric Coleman and Kane Boal on selecting your handling calf/show calf for the year ahead. We then got stuck into the main part of the day, Damien Storan gave everyone an intuitive talk on Stock Judging and Reason Giving, we then split the crowd into three separate smaller groups, where they were taken by our National Committee Members to each judge different groups of cows. Every Young Member got the opportunity to judge and give their reasons throughout the day, where they all received feedback from the team leaders. to help them learn and improve on their skills. We would like to thank Liffey Mills and Arrabawn for their generous sponsorship of this event, without them it would not be possible to run these events. We would also like to extend our thanks again to the Cleary Family for hosting us on the day and to Damien Storan, Pauric Coleman and Kane Boal for their professional demonstrations.

Stock Judging and Reason Giving Competition at Emerald Expo

The practice and training from our workshop day was put to the test at our Stock Judging and Reason Giving competition at Emerald Expo. In Memoriam - TommyFinlayR.I.P

Tarabella Herd, Ballydaly, Tullamore, Co. Offaly

23rd February 1940 – 28th October 2024

Tommy Finlay passed on to his eternal reward on Monday October 28th 2024.

A pioneering farmer all his life he is fondly remembered and is held in the highest regard by all in the Holstein Friesian community, many of whom were his life-long friends sharing a strong, deep bond borne out of a special love for the Holstein Friesian cow.

A stalwart in the true sense of the word, Tommy was one of the founding committee members of the Laois Offaly club when it was established on March 30th1987. He remained a steadfast, enthusiastic and energetic club member throughout his life. He was passionate about the development of the Young Members Association and was pro-active in ensuring a vibrant club outlet and network for Young Members in Laois Offaly and nationally. When the Tullamore Show was established in 1991 Tommy was appointed Chairperson of the Dairy section. This appointment reflected the high esteem that he was held in as a pioneering dairy breeder, and it was also in recognition of his organisational skills and networking abilities. He accomplished the role of Dairy Chairman with the utmost professionalism and integrity until his retirement in 2022, encompassing over three decades of dedication and selfless service.

His contribution and his legacy as Dairy Chairman includes:

• The expansion and growth in the show classes and increased growth in the number of breeds and exhibitors taking part from all corners of the country.

• Helping to attain National Livestock Show title and accreditation in 1995.

• The success and importance of the Confined classes as part of the show programme ensuring a national platform and promotional opportunity for breeders from counties Laois, Offaly and Westmeath to showcase their stock. The loyal backing received from local breeders who strongly supported the show throughout its early years was forever appreciated by Tommy. He appreciated that without this strong local support the show would not have had the opportunity to grow.

• The huge popularity and success of the YMA Showmanship League classes, dedicated to handlers. Thanks to Tommy’s foresight the Tullamore National Livestock Show was one of the very first shows to embrace and adopt qualifying classes for this newly introduced national YMA competition.

• Increased commercial partnerships and the growth in sponsorship revenue.

A member of the Show organising committee since its inception in 1991, Tommy was one of a small number of voluntary personnel everpresent since the foundation of the show.

Tommy commenced his farming career aged 11 years upon the death of his father. The family farm at Ballydaly, Tullamore, Co. Offaly consisted of a mixed farming enterprise including livestock and tillage. Working alongside his mother and his five siblings, the family worked hard to ensure the success of the farm. Tommy and his wife Ber were married in 1969. To describe the married couple as a formidable team is an understatement! They were blessed with five daughters, Martina, Paula, Carmel, Marie and Bernadette. Tommy and the family worked hard to continually progress & develop the farm. He always encouraged the family to work hard and to do their best, setting a good example by his own actions. All staff including apprentices and students who worked on the farm over the years were like part of the family.

Modernisation was embraced at every opportunity. The farming of sugar beet and tillage was discontinued, paving the way for a concerted farming enterprise of dairying and pigs. The large-scale pig enterprise consisted of 180 sows plus all piglets carried through to fatteners. He was one of the first dairy farmers to implement a paddock system for optimal dairy herd performance and grassland management. An encounter with Bill Walsh from Cork who was on the farm taking measurements for the installation of yard scrapers gave Tommy the impetus to get involved with the Irish Friesian Breeders Association. Tommy and Ber joined the Irish Friesian Breeders Association registering the Tarabella herd prefix. The choice of Tarabella was very considered, it being an amalgam of names of all family members. Grading Up the herd was a hugely instrumental catalyst in the overall development of the farm. Milk recording commenced at this time, it was also a highly significant milestone. Classification was also adopted as an invaluable data-based tool to achieve improved quality and enhanced breeding performance. His breeding philosophy could be described as “He loved a functional, solid cow who could hold her own in the herd, a cow who would Classify well and have that bit of style”. He thoroughly relished the spectacle of the glass jars in the milking parlour filling up with milk, it gave him immense satisfaction of achievement that these good cows were producing the goods.

A trip to Canada visiting top Holstein herds piqued further interest and breeding knowledge. Embryo transfer and flushing were adopted and utilised as new technologies to strengthen and improve herd quality and merit. Lactomont Paula Blackstar ET EX and Tarabella Edel 3 GP were among the favourite cows in the herd. The family enjoyed exhibiting at the local summer shows. Tommy’s enterprising ethos and farm development achievements led to him being chosen as an ACOT demonstration farm during the 1970’s. His leadership capabilities and credentials were always apparent.

In recognition of his stellar positive work and life-time endeavors promoting the Holstein Friesian breed Tommy was presented with a multitude of National awards including:

• Young Members Association Hall of Fame award (2013)

• IHFA Golden Jubilee recognition award (2015)

• National Dairy Show Lifetime recognition award (2017)

The level of enjoyment from friendships developed by Tommy and Ber & the family from attending club and IHFA social outings, functions, events and gatherings over the years is immeasurable. The family are very grateful to all IHFA staff members past and present for the assistance, professionalism and encouragement imparted over the years.

Following retirement from farming Tommy had time for his hobbies, following GAA and playing golf. Golf courses that he played were Castle Barna golf club and Moate golf club.

On May 5th last year just six months prior to his passing, Tommy was presented with the FBD National Hall of Fame award 2024 nominated by the IHFA. We are all most thankful that he was in great health to attend & enjoy the celebratory function in person, beaming with pride when presented with his Hall of Fame award. It was most fitting that he received such strong support from life-long friends who were also in attendance at the function from both Laois Offaly club founding members and Tullamore Show officers & committee members. Huge crowds of mourners attended his wake at the family home over two days and the funeral mass in Tullamore to sympathise with the family and to pay their final respects to Tommy. Mourners travelled from far and near. The size of the attendance gives testament to his high level of popularity and the esteem that he is held in. Memorabilia from his lifetime’s involvement with the Holstein Friesian breed were close by his side throughout. His IHFA tie was one of the symbolic gifts brought to the altar during his requiem mass.

Tommy and Ber were best friends. Ber described him as “The best husband and friend I could ever have”. They received countless blessings throughout their happy married life of fifty-five years including sixteen grandchildren. To Ber and all his family we offer our sincerest condolences and our deepest sympathies.

He is remembered fondly now and forever by all in the Holstein Friesian community.

BORN TO SHINE Abbott Ann’s Path to Showring Glory

Paul Murphy and Emma Behan enjoyed fabulous success on April 26th last when Coolroehouse Abbott Ann won 1st 4 Year Old & Supreme Champion Emerald Expo 2025. Bred by John & Ursula Forrest, Coolroebeg, Banteer, Co. Cork, Abbott Ann was acquired when Paul & Emma purchased a batch of eleven yearlings from the Forrest family in early March 2022. At the time a total of 40 head were purchased in, required for grazing a farm that Paul was managing on behalf of his uncle. Her style and qualities soon stood out among her comrades, Paul and Emma quickly realised that she possessed something special. Just three years later and Coolroehouse Abbott Ann wins National show Champion honours at Emerald Expo in Virginia, Co. Cavan bringing home the silverware to Lombardstown, Mallow, Co. Cork.

Fate may have played a part in this chapter of success. In 2007 aged 11 Paul was introduced to showing for the very first time, coincidentally thanks to the Forrest family. The family had a number of very promising show calves in their herd that year however there was a deficit of handlers. For Paul who is from a non-dairy farming household, the showing of dairy stock was not at all on his radar at that stage. He is eternally grateful to the Forrest family who approached him with the opportunity to lead a show calf. It could be referred to as a “sliding doors moment”. Having enjoyed success, achievements and happiness in his profession ever since, it was always in Paul’s mind that he would make a purchase of stock from the Forrest family at some stage in appreciation if the opportunity ever arose. When they advertised a batch of surplus heifers for sale Paul seized the initiative.

Their overriding priority at the time of the purchase was to source the required total number as quickly as possible in order to graze the available acres. Throughout the summer of 2022 while doing the herding, Emma and Paul were both struck by the style and quality of Abbott Ann.

Paul recalls how they both separately were moved to noting her tag number in order to later check out her ancestry details. At the end of that year the heifers were advertised for sale as in-calf heifers, due to calve the following Spring.

A deal was struck with one buyer to purchase the entire bunch except for Abbott Ann, Paul & Emma both adamant that she was not for sale. Thanks to the goodwill, assistance and friendship from others Paul & Emma had solutions to overcome the absence of milking facilities of their own.

Being very pleased with her steady progress after calving it was decided that Abbott Ann would be exhibited at the National Dairy Show. It was a time of high excitement for Paul & Emma, exhibiting their own in-milk animal at a show together for the first time.

They were both pleased with her performance at her very first show, placing 2nd in the Senior 3-Year-Old class. Paul notes “She did everything we could have asked of her as a heifer, while placing second in a competitive class she won a lot of admirers. That gave us a boost of confidence to keep going. Her temperament is exceptionally quiet and placid. She held to a serve very soon after the show and her yield throughout the lactation was steady”.

Calved in since late September on her second lactation Abbott Ann was entered for Emerald Expo in the 4-Year-Old in-milk class. The journey north to Virginia in Cavan was completed three days prior to the show in order to give sufficient rest and acclimatisation. When in the show ring Paul recalls a comment made to him by judge Andy Cope “This cow must be doing a lot of winning”. When she was tapped out as Senior Champion Paul describes the moment and his feelings “It was an unbelievable feeling of joy and unbridled happiness. Emma and I were thrilled, over the moon. Winning the Champion sash, the red rosette and taking home the Seamus Kelly perpetual trophy gave us as big of a boost as good as any fancy holiday would. The hours of hard work and effort involved in getting show ready really pays off when success is achieved. It gives you a strong boost of encouragement”.

Since returning from Expo Abbott Ann continues to perform really well. Depending on a couple of important variables Paul & Emma will consider exhibiting her at other shows later in the year. Scanned in calf to Progenesis Aneesh (FR1762) she is due to calve-in on her third lactation later this year. Her 2024 born heifer calf by Conway looks very promising.

Paul & Emma conclude “We are very grateful to everyone who has helped us on our journey especially those who have and who continue to help us develop our animals. We are excited to now have our own herd prefix HILLHOLM and we are excited for the future and the opportunities ahead”.

Top 50 IHFA Milk Solids Production Herds

Milk recording figures were used to compile a list of the top producing (average actual milk solids production) herds in the IHFA membership. Criteria for animals and herds to be included is as follows; animals must be alive at the time of the list compilation and in the herd for the lactation, must have calved between 01/09/23 and 31/08/24. Minimum 3 recordings in the herd. Herds must have a minimum of 25 cows and 85% of the animal with pedigree status.

Overcoming Milk Fat Depression with Devenish Milk Solids Booster

Producing higher milk solids economically is a means of increasing net farm income. In a research paper, outlining the prevalence of Milk Fat Depression (MFD), one of the authors, Dr. Morgan Sheehy outlined that 1 in every 10 dairy farmers experience the problem. MFD occurs when milk fat % drops significantly at grass and often these farmers have milk protein % higher than their butterfat %. MFD normally occurs from April to September and always results in significant drops in milk price (cents/litre).

Devenish Nutrition have developed a product which focuses on increasing milk solid output (milk butterfat and milk protein percentages and yields). This is a 7th generation product and the concept is well accepted and used widely.

This product combines four specialist ingredients with specific known mode of actions and has delivered significant improvements in milk solids output. Jack Hogan, a nutritionist with Devenish emphasises the importance of proper concentrate composition in maximising the return from Devenish Milk Solids Booster.

Irish Farm Results have shown significant return on investment (ROI). Typical farm results are giving a ROI of 2–3:1 i.e. a net return after paying for the product of €2 to €3 for every €1 spent.

Maximising Milk Value

Patrick Coffey MVB, who farms in Co. Cork, has been using Devenish Milk Solids Booster supplied by Lisavaird Co-Op since April 2024. Over the last 12 months, he has increased butterfat levels on average by 0.28%, as well as seeing an average 0.18% increase in milk protein.

To put these improvements into financials, in a 7,500L herd, the results equate to an increased net margin of €253/cow on milk performance alone.

Patrick commented, “Devenish Milk Solids Booster made a real difference on my farm in two key areas:

1. Improved Milk Price: The noticeable lift in butterfat and protein levels directly boosted the price I received per litre – a real financial win. My milk price was 0.8 cent/litre under the Co-Op average milk price in 2023. I saw an improvement in my milk price since using Devenish Milk Solids Booster and was 4.4 cent/ litre above Co-Op average milk price in 2024.

2. As a winter milk producer, I saw a significant increase in milk solids while cows were indoors. You can see these figures in the graphs below. I was particularly happy with the cow’s performance in Autumn 2024 and Spring 2025.”

He continues “Overall, the return on investment was substantial. This is a product that should be considered by all farmers and particularly by those who find it challenging to reach the Co-Op average milk price.”

A Key Tool in the Toolbox

Robert Shannon and family farm the Ballydehob herd in Ballinascarty, Co. Cork and have been using Devenish Milk Solids Booster in their concentrates supplied by Lisavaird Co-Op since April 2024.

A Proven MFD Solution

John and Nora Walsh farm the Counguilla Holstein herd in Co. Kerry and introduced Devenish Milk Solids Booster in April 2024 and have seen consistent progress since.

John said, “Like so many farmers, we have seen Milk Fat Depression over the years, and we were eager to find something that could increase our milk price economically.

It made an instant impact on my milk solids, with the advantage being maintained throughout the last 12 months.

I would definitely recommend it to other farmers to help them maximise the value from their milk.”

Robert commented, “We have been breeding to increase milk solids, and we have made significant progress.

Since commencing feeding Devenish Milk Solids Booster, we have increased our butterfat by 0.37% and our milk protein by 0.06%.

Obviously, every year is different, and every farmer should do their own evaluation.

In my opinion, increasing milk solids economically is key to increasing profitability.

Key farm areas to improve this include breeding, high intakes of quality grass and winter forage balanced with concentrates fed at the correct economic level.

Devenish Milk Solids Booster is helping me along this journey.”

Over the past 12 months, John and Nora Walsh have seen a 0.32% average increase in butterfat and 0.22% in protein.

Changing of the Guard

IHFA Club Conference and AGM Celebrated New National President and Milestones

The IHFA held its annual Club Conference and AGM on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025 at 7:30pm in the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan. This year’s event proved to be a particularly memorable occasion as members from across the country gathered to witness the appointment of Mary Rafferty as the incoming IHFA National President.

Mary Rafferty, a stalwart of the Breffni/Oriel Club, had been a cornerstone of the Association for over 35 years. Serving as club secretary from 1989 to 2019, Mary’s tireless dedication, exceptional organisational skills, and passion for the breed had earned her widespread respect and admiration. From launching the Expo Show in Cavan during the 1990s, to establishing cross-border links and supporting countless club and national events, Mary played a central role in the life of the IHFA community.

Mary’s presidency marked a proud milestone not only for herself but also for the Breffni/Oriel Club, who looked forward to welcoming the prestigious National IHFA Open Day at the Greenan Family’s Greenlea Herd, Crosshugh, Co. Monaghan on July 10th, 2025.

The AGM also marked the conclusion of John O’Sullivan’s presidency. The IHFA extended sincere thanks to John for his leadership and continued commitment to the Holstein Friesian breed.

In addition, Leo Nulty of the North Eastern Club was announced as the incoming President Elect for the coming year, a development warmly welcomed by members in attendance.

IHFA MASTER BREEDER AWARDS 2024

The IHFA are celebrated their annual awards night on Friday 4 April 2025, after the awards were postponed due to Storm Eowyn in January. The Master Breeder Awards were kindly sponsored by Munster Bovine and Progressive Genetics. Munster Bovine’s Tom Baker addressed the room on the evening, commenting that ‘It is great to see an award that encompasses so much and how proud recipients are to receive their Master Breeder Awards’.

The Master Breeder award was a new initiative last year, that recognises herds performing outstandingly on a number of key metrics related to production, sustainability and longevity. Some herds perform better in different aspects, but the top herds all have outstanding performance in a number of areas with few weaknesses.

Kathleen Watson

The IHFA is delighted to announce , Sanfield herd, Killurin, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford as a most worthy recipient of the National Hall of Fame Award, presented at the prestigious awards night, on Sunday 4th May. Kathleen has served as Secretary & Assistant Secretary of the Slaney Friesian Breeders club for thirtytwo years. This remarkable stellar service in a voluntary capacity is the epitome of Kathleen’s selfless dedication to her local Slaney club. Thanks to Kathleen’s multitude of talents including executive planning & organisation, attention to detail, and tireless sheer hard work, fellow members of the Slaney club continue to enjoy a vibrant and energetic club outlet now on the cusp of its 50 anniversary year.

In 2017 Kathleen was elected IHFA President – the highest elected office of the Association. This elevation bears testament to the high esteem in which Kathleen is held in by all IHFA members throughout Ireland. th

A native of Rosslare, Kathleen and her husband John, a native of Bridgetown, joined the Slaney Friesian Breeders club in 1983. The catchment area of the club is Holstein Friesian breeders in Wexford and south Wicklow. A recently married couple with ambitions for their farming future ahead, Kathleen & John were immediately at ease amongst club members, kindred spirits with an inexhaustible appetite for knowledge learning, always open to embracing new ideas to achieve higher standards of herd performance. Their involvement in the club ratcheted up in 1988 when Kathleen was nominated and seconded as a Club officer taking on the mantle of Assistant Secretary. She was then elected Secretary in 1994. As a club member for forty-two years & counting and with a track record of serving as a club officer over three decades, the contribution made by Kathleen towards the vibrancy of her club, for the prosperity of all club members is of the highest order commendable.

Kathleen & John, on the pathway to an exciting lifetime voyage as progressive dairy farmers registered the Sanfield herd prefix with the Irish Friesian Breeders Association in 1978. Home bred cows were graded up and select pedigree females were purchased to compliment the herd. Their three children Mark, Philip and Jennifer were born in these early years. All the family thoroughly enjoyed farming life; everyone was hands-on especially when exhibiting their stock at local shows. By the late 1980’s the family was exhibiting at nine shows per year: Gorey, Adamstown, Enniscorthy, Bannow Rathangan, Dungarvan, Waterford, Athy, Tullow, Tinahely. Milk recording and IHFA Classification service were utilised to aid herd development and improvement, providing objective data to help make informed breeding strategy decisions for the herd. Successes achieved at National level reached a pinnacle when winning 1 prize in the IHFA National Herds competition in 1992. Sanfield Aero Pine 77 exhibited by the Jones family won Supreme Champion of the National Spring Fair in 2006. Kathleen and John were members of the successful Slaney club team who won 1 prize in the IHFA National Inter club stock judging competition 1998 with Kathleen winning the accolade of the highest individual stock judging score. st st

The IHFA National open day has been hosted by Slaney club members on four occasions. Kathleen has been to the forefront in assisting the major logistical undertaking of hosting this prestigious on-farm event on every occasion. Her reputation as a top caliber judge precedes her with a judging CV brimful of past guest master judging assignments completed in almost all club areas. On the occasion of the 40 anniversary year of the Slaney club the IHFA presented Kathleen with a National recognition award.

New Member Profile KILLEENDUFF HERD

The Kilcullen family, Killeenduff, Easkey, Co. Sligo

Martin & Christine Kilcullen and their family Andrew, Niall, Hannah and Peter are new IHFA members having recently Graded Up their herd. Situated in a coastal location, the Kilcullen family farm is 5kms east of Easkey village and 10 kms from Sligo’s renowned Ox mountains. A relic with a claim to fame situated in the townland of Killeenduff known as the “Split Rock” or “Giant’s Rock” which according to folklore was put in place by Fionn MacCumhaill. The multi-generational farm has similar to every family farm its own unique story and background as Martin recalls the influence of his parents. His mother Margaret insisted on Pedigree Registered Friesian stock as the backbone to the family’s dairy herd of that earlier era. She registered the Killeenduff prefix and fully took on responsibility for sketching the calves at birth. The annual volumes of registrations published by the herdbook during the 1950’s & onwards record numerous Killeenduff registered animals. In subsequent decades the emphasis on the dairy herd relented to other enterprises. Fast forward to today where Martin & Christine and the next generation in the family of eager & educated farmers are ambitious for dairy farming into the future.

The milking herd is 100% AI bred. Sire selection is based on a balance of production traits, fertility, health and components. Bulls utilised to very positive effect in the past includes Jerudo (JUX), Pimorin (PIM) and Castleblagh Ruthless (FZC). A stock bull runs with the replacement heifers who graze on an outside block.15-20 heifers are calved in annually.

A number of heifers in-milk purchased in the past at the Donegal club sale of calved heifers have performed to a high level of satisfaction in the herd, helping to achieve improved output and were the foundation of good breeding lines.

A sample of high performing cows in the herd includes:

Killeenduff Annie 1152

2 lactation yield 7,471 kgs, 651 kgs milk solids, nd 4.87 % Fat, 3.84 % Protein. SCC 34 (318 d).

Killeenduff FZC Eryca

5 lactation yield 7,081 kgs, 624 kgs milk solids, th 5.07 % Fat, 3.74 % Protein (305 d)

Killeenduff OYK Lauren 1018

Niall who is the second eldest has in recent weeks completed a four-year course studying for a degree in Agriculture in NUI Galway. Andrew who is the eldest is currently based in Australia, he keeps in regular contact. Hannah is a student in N.U.I. Galway, studying for a degree in Commerce & Irish. Peter is the youngest in the family, he is in second year in secondary school. All the family are very accomplished at sports, both Andrew and Niall have played inter county hurling for Sligo with Niall playing on the senior county team the past five consecutive seasons.

“Grading Up seems the logical and obvious next step to help achieve herd development and quality” comments Niall. “The fact that we have been selectively using top AI bulls for a number of years and also now milk recording means that we are already producing and accumulating the necessary records. I also want to lock in herd quality in the long term, Grading Up having the full lineage recorded and Pedigree status really compliments this overall goal. There was a very good reason why my grandparents valued the Killeenduff prefix and herdbook status so taking inspiration from them is the correct thing to do and to put in place our own legacy. Besides, I have a keen interest in breeding and genetics and the IHFA network is a valuable unique resource of further knowledge.”

Farming a total area of 150 acres with an 90-acre milking platform, the 120-cow pedigree registered herd is managed on an all-Spring calving system. Calving begins around February 1 every year. The management of the herd is such that the target milk yield average per mature cow is 9,000 kgs, with a milk solids yield of 580 – 600 kgs per cow. The herd currently consists of seventeen first lactation heifers. The number of mature cows in their 6 lactation or older totals 28, equating to 25% of the herd overall. This indicates robust good health and positive longevity. st th

5 lactation yield 8,323 kgs, 675 kgs milk solids, th 4.45 % Fat, 3.67 % Protein. SCC 37(291 d)

Killeenduff FZC Bridget

5 lactation yield 8,481 kgs, 706 kgs milk solids, th 4.72 % Fat, 3.60 % Protein (299 d).

Killeenduff PIM Regan 954

6 lactation yield 8,422 kgs, 770 kgs milk solids, th 5.65 % Fat, 3.49 % Protein (305 d).

To take the next step in pursuing his interest in breeding performance and herd merit Niall plans to Classify the herd in the near future.

Throughout the summer months there is optimum use of highquality grazed grass. “The stocking rate on the milking platform is such that we are always very conscious of grass quantities and quality. If silage is required as a buffer we wont hesitate to go in with feed. Since starting to measure grass as a management tool it has paid dividends”. Reseeding is practised regularly, Niall comments that the reseeding method of stitching-in has been very satisfactory especially on silage ground. “Once cows go to grass full time, typically late March depending on the weather and the ground conditions we aim to make the best possible use of grazed grass while always being careful as to ground conditions. The furthest paddock is 2kms from the milking parlour. The use of astro turf as an aid to improve both cow comfort and the durability of roadways is a new initiative. Zero grazing is relied upon to a limited extent during the shoulders of the grass growing season”.

Mid to late October typically heralds the end of the grazing year and the beginning of the indoor period for the herd. A quality, balanced TMR of grass silage, straw and a three-way mix of barley, maize and soya is fed throughout the winter months. The winter accommodation facilities include150 cubicles, more than adequate for the herd size, indicative as to the priority of cow comfort, care and performance ultimately.

He even has two Gold Awards for his cows this year. His extremely affable nature and his kindness; his knowledge of people, cows and support industries; his intelligence & modesty; and his tremendous energy make Leo Nulty a desirable choice for President in 2026-2027. It couldn’t have happened at a better time as we are celebrating 50 years of our Club in 2026. Roll on Pope Leo; Sorry, President Elect Leo

This spring our YMA committee held a washing, drying, clipping & leading day on John Halton’s farm in Rathmolyon, Co Meath. 15 young people attended and got stuck in; most had never help clippers before; many had not lead a calf before.

Three days later we got this message from the family of a 4 yearold & a 6 yearold.

“I just wanted to send a quick message to say a big thank you for such a wonderful day on Saturday. Katie and Emma had an amazing experiencethey haven’t stopped talking about it!

A special mention to Ella, Hollie, and Alexandra, who were absolutely incredible with them. The girls found them so kind and helpful, and they really made a lasting impression. Katie and Emma spent all of Sunday walking and grooming a calf—they’re so excited to keep it going. Thank you again for including us and for the brilliant hospitality. Best wishes, Donald and Anne.”

We received 11 Diamond Awards for 11 herd owners & 14 Golden Awards for 12 herd owners: Leo Nulty & Pat Murray recieved 2 each for their Bryanstown & Cluainailbhe herds, respectively.
