Welcome to the Iolian! Hello I-I Key Clubbers! My name is Hanna Paton and I was elected to be your new Iolian editor at DCLC 2016 (I’m the one on the right)! I am so thankful for this opportunity and I am so excited for the year to come! I am currently a sophomore at Streator Township High School and am involved in several sports and clubs including cross country, softball, Operation Snowball, Spanish club, and Key Club, of course! This past year I served as my home club editor and am excited to be in charge of such a large and important publication! I wish you all well and encourage you all to send in submissions for future Iolians! Feel free to send submissions directly to the email below or to your lieutenant governor. Your LTG should inform you of deadlines for future submissions so please keep an eye out for those and try your hardest to abide by those deadlines! Sending in submissions before the deadline is VERY IMPORTANT if you want that submission to be featured in the Iolian. I also request that all submissions be sent in Microsoft word format or that they are typed directly into an email so that I can keep submissions uniform and can format the submission into the publication more smoothly. You may also use the template provided on the district website (pg. 22). Thanks for reading the Iolian and I hope to see and meet some of you at ICON in Atlanta! Yours in Service, Hanna Paton 2016-2017 Iolian Editor Email me at: editor@iikeyclub.org

Intro to the District Board Governor Abby Mast Hello I-I Key Clubbers!

My name is Abby Mast and I am your newly elected 2016-2017 District Governor! I am so excited for this upcoming year; it is going to be awesome! I am from one of the most southern divisions of the Illinois- Eastern Iowa District, division 31/34. I go to Belleville West High School where I am currently a junior. If you went to District Convention and Leadership Conference, you probably heard all about my goals and ideas for this year. You also heard my very clever (in my opinion) analogy of Key Club to a ship. The way I see it, the members are the sails of a ship. You guys are why the District is able to achieve its goals of service and student leadership. The clubs and the members are why this district is so great! My job as governor is to support you all and help you when the waves get a little rough. The governor is kind of like the Mast of a ship. (Get it? It’s funny because my last name is Mast) As governor, I want to always be accessible to you guys. If you ever have any issues or just want to get to know me better, I urge you to email me anytime at governor@iikeyclub.org or friend me on Facebook. Another goal I have as Governor is to make the I-I District a real presence on social media, so make sure you are following us! We have a Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook! I also would like to create a better balance between building new clubs, and also retaining members in the already existing clubs. The way I see it is that there could be millions of Key Clubs around the world, but that does not matter unless there is actual service being done. I would also like to make sure Key Clubbers know all the ways they can serve and help their communities and the world If you have any questions about Key Club or concerns, please feel more than welcome to reach out to the District Board. My job is to help you guys, and support you in any way I can, so please, let me be your Mast. Thank you all for all the hard work and dedication you all put into this District. Yours in Service and Always in Friendship,

Abby Mast

Secretary Oviya Sougaumarane Hello I-I District! I am Oviya Sougoumarane, your District Secretary of 2016-2017! I am a junior at Normal Community High School. This year my focus is to overcome communication issues with clubs and get more rosters turned in on time. I would like to be organized in all my responsibilities and make sure all Key Clubbers have an easier time contacting each other. Outside of Key Club, I enjoy being in Best Buddies, Model UN, Normal Peace and Justice and more clubs at my school! I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and reading non-fiction books! Please feel free to contact me at: secretary@iikeyclub.org

Yours in Service, Oviya Sougaumarane

Statistical Secretary Yates McLaughlin Hi! My name is Yates McLaughlin and I am currently a sophomore at Normal Community High School in Normal, Il. My dreams and aspirations as a young teenager have made an impact on many of my decisions throughout my high school career. One of them was joining Key Club along with MANY other important clubs that have made me more developed as a person. These include speech team, marching band, concert band, class board, and Future Christian Athletes. Now although this takes a lot of time, I always find time to hang out with friends, walk my dogs, and do homework, of course. All of these activities have kept me very busy and have helped make me the person I am today. Yours in Service and Friendship, Yates McLaughlin

Treasurer Anthony Palazzolo Hello, Illinois-Eastern Iowa District! My name is Anthony Palazzolo, and I am your 2016-2017 District Treasurer. I am a freshman at Sacred Heart-Griffin in Springfield, Illinois. I am really excited to serve you all this upcoming year! My job is to help you with the dues process and to make sure that our district keeps up with Key Club International standards. I am here to help you and your clubs grow and become the best they can be. When I ran at District Convention/Leadership Conference, I had four main goals:    

Increase the participation in the Youth Opportunities Fund. Increase the income of Trick or Treat for UNICEF. Increase the amount of people who turn in their Early Bird dues. Bring your club new fundraising ideas that you will be successful at and want to do again.

My goal throughout the year is to educate you on these points and to make them a reality because they will make our district and your club much more successful. Feel free to contact me anytime (especially if you have questions concerning the dues process) at treasurer.iikc@gmail.com. Yours in service, Anthony Palazzolo

Lieutenant Governor of Division 1 – Kathy Mai Hi, Fellow District Key Clubbers! I am Kathy Mai, the new elected Lieutenant Governor for District 1! I have been a Key Clubber for three years now and I can’t deny how much Key Club has shaped me as a person. Not only did Key Club develop me into a passionate individual, but also a leader. From being a member to a Club President to LTG, I can only say the best parts of high school stem from Key Club. As a new elect, I am excited to be working with the district board as well as my home clubs. I wish to stay motivated and organized through this year so that I won’t miss deadlines. Sometimes this is trouble for me because I have problems trying to get familiar with Microsoft email; however, I am excited to develop life changing bonds with the district board. (continues on next page)

In the upcoming year, I wish to improve club activities by giving my home clubs more engaging activities that they can participate in. Yours in Service, Kathy Mai

Lieutenant Governor of Division 7 – Ben Lennartz

My name is Ben Lennartz and I am the Lieutenant Governor for Division 7 of the I-I district. I have always been active in serving, even since I was young. My first experience with serving was when I was 9. During the summer, my grandfather took me to the food pantry he volunteers at on Thursdays. I worked at the “Miscellaneous Table,” which is best known for the toys there. The look on kids’ faces when they received new toys changed me; it made me want to help people. I worked there for years with my grandfather and my siblings and helped out however I could. I like to think working there led me to Key Club.

Besides Key Club, I am still always doing something- whether it be acting on stage, playing various drums in band, or playing attack on the lacrosse field. I enjoy being active, especially with my friends who inspired me to do all these extracurriculars. I strive to lead in everything I do and always give 100%. When I’m not with Key Club or other various school-oriented activities, I am with my brothers Alex and Sam, my sister Mia, and Bailey, the world’s best bulldog. I will be the best Lieutenant Governor I can be, and do anything and everything in my power to help serve. Yours in service, Ben Lennartz

Lieutenant Governor of Division 8 – Jack Bedtke Hi everyone my name is Jack Bedtke and I am super excited to be the new Lieutenant Governor for Division 8 of the I-I District! I am a junior at Lake Park High School located in the neighboring town to this upcoming year's District Convention and Leadership Conference in Bloomingdale. I was one of the founders to my home club just two years ago and already I have been captured in the Key Club experience. I love helping others in every way possible and giving back to the people that are around me each and every day. Apart from Key Club I am a two-time State qualifying Bowler and looking forwards to an all-state season next year. I’m also a caddie and dishwasher at the elite Medinah Country Club. The rest of the time in my day I play with my giant Great Dane, Tank. My hopes for this upcoming year are to get multiple clubs from this division to attend DCLC since it is near home. I am looking forward to my year as Lieutenant Governor and can’t wait for what’s to come! Yours in Service, Jack Bedtke

Lieutenant Governor of Division 10 – Maggie Keating

Hello! I’m Maggie Keating, a sophomore at Batavia High school, and the Lieutenant Governor of division 10. I got involved in Key Club my freshman as a class representative. After that I became the editor of my club. Being that involved in Key Club changed my life. It opened my eyes to see how much good Key Clubbers do for their community and the impact it has. That inspired me to become a Lieutenant Governor. Aside from Key Club, I am also a student council member. In my free time (or lack of) I enjoy spending time with my family, watching the Blackhawks, and drinking as much coffee as possible. I am very excited to start my term as Lieutenant Governor of division 10 and I will do everything in my power to make this a great year! Yours in Service, Maggie Keating

Lieutenant Governor of Division 11 –

Claire Chrzan My name is Claire Chrzan and I am the Lieutenant Governor for Division 11. Ever since my freshman year of high school, Key Club has changed me and helped me become who I am today. Besides Key Club, I am always consistently busy. I am involved in many clubs at my school, I play tennis, and manage boys’ basketball. I love puppies, baby goats, dancing, and laughing with my friends! Service is so important to me because when I make someone smile or laugh, I know that his or her day was brightened! Key Club lets me make this impact on people’s lives and that’s why I love it! Yours in Service, Claire Chrzan

Lieutenant Governor of Division 12 – Alex Marshall I am currently a sophomore at Rockford Guilford High School. I first joined Key Club when last year’s president at my school came to my freshman class and talked about Key Club. I was really intrigued by the idea of Key Club, so I went. A couple weeks later I was elected as a Freshman Representative of Guilford. By the time officer elections came around little ‘ole Alex Marshall ran for club president and won. The experience I have gained from being President will transfer nicely into being LTG. Yours in Service, Alex Marshall

Lieutenant Governor of Division 21 – Carmen Awin-Ongya Hello I-I District Key-clubbers, My name is Carmen Awin-Ongya and I am honored to be the Lieutenant Governor of Division 21, giving all my thanks to God. Most of you don't know me so here are some things about my life that I would like to share. I was born on December 13, 1998 in Italy as the second daughter to Ghanaian immigrants. In late 2001 I came to America, but prior to that my sister and I spent almost a year in Ghana with our grandparents. So I'd been on three continents by the time I was three. After that, I became less mobile, living in Bolingbrook until the middle of kindergarten, then moving to Romeoville where I have been ever since. I am currently a junior at Romeoville High School where I take the most vigorous courses available in preparation to attend one of the nation's top universities (so I hope). I participate in multiple extracurricular activities like Speech, Scholastics Bowl, Drama, Choir, Ecology club, DECA and I'm a National Honors Society member. Moving on from things I would put on an application, here are some other facts about me. I am a YA book nerd and currently reading the Assassin's Blade, a collection of the Throne Glass novellas. The CW is my number one TV network. I enjoy hula-hooping for some reason. I don't like mustard or pickles. I'm not really shy, I just prefer listening. K-LOVE radio is my go to radio station with for KING & COUNTRY and Tenth Avenue North as my preferred (I don't really have favorites) bands. I would rather not go on because I don't really like talking or writing about myself too much; however, if you want to know more and our paths cross feel free to ask, after all I do like enriching conversations. Sincerely, Carmen Awin-Ongya

Club Spotlight Time to honor clubs in our district that have been doing tremendous work in their homes, schools, and communities! Want to know how to get your club in the spotlight? Email an article and pictures of a service project that your club has done to editor@iikeyclub.org or use the submission template on www.iikeyclub.org. We’d love to see! Plainfield North High School – Division 21

PNHS at FMSC Plainfield North’s Key Club invited the neighboring Elementary school’s students to spend a day together over spring break, to help build ties between the two schools and raise awareness about the fact that not all children have enough food to eat. We started the afternoon at Portillo’s “feeding the starving children” and then continued on to Feed My Starving Children in Aurora. Students packaged meals for children in need in Haiti. The club raised over $300 to donate to the organization and boxed enough food to feed 201 children for a year.
