Governor’s Update Hello everyone! With the school year now in full swing I want to give you all an update on what the district is working on! Now that the busy times Fall Leadership Rallies have come and gone we are focusing on a few major things: Dues, the January board meeting, and District Convention. If your clubs has not yet paid dues make sure to do that soon! The deadline for paying dues is December 1st which means if your club has not already paid for the upcoming year you have about two weeks to get those in. While we are on the topic of dues, I would like to remind you all about the new I-I give me 5 campaign! The purpose of this campaign is to encourage all clubs to increase their paid membership by five members over the previous year. Clubs who do so will receive a special reward at District Convention in March! January Board Meeting In January, the District board will be having our annual winter board meeting. While at the meeting, our Leadership Development Committee will train the next group of Lieutenant Governors and the District board will begin final preparations for District Convention! I will begin planning the agenda in the coming weeks and I plan to make this meeting as productive as possible. District Convention District Convention is only four months away! This years convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Schaumburg and I would love to see you all there! Prices for the convention are not out yet but I encourage you all to begin thinking about fundraising for the event now. Our District Convention Committee is working very hard to make this years convention special and so far they are doing a great job! Be sure to stay tuned for more information on District Convention in the coming months.

Statistical Secretary’s Update Hello I-I District! I hope you are all doing well and had a very spooky Halloween! I am so impressed with all the work that you guys have been able to accomplish! Even though some of us seniors were in complete college application mode, I hope we're all keeping in mind that MRFs are due November 10th for the reporting period of October. It is very crucial that you guys get these in on time to help us help you! If you guys have not reported for the months prior to October (March-Sep), no worries! Secretary’s Update Hey everyone! I hope the beginning of your school year has been great! Since August, I’ve collected and finalized ontime as well as late rosters into the master directory, which I sent out to Key Club International by the first of November. I’m planning on making addendums to the master directory, and taking lots of minutes at August Board! Just as a reminder—if you have not submitted your club’s roster, you can still do so! Treasurer’s Update Hey Key Clubbers, Hope you were falling in love with Key Club even more since the last Iolian!! For the last few months, I have been brain storming some cool fundraisers to have in the upcoming months that will benefit our district as a whole. I have been contacting restaurants, businesses, and adults in our communities to see if they would like to help. In the next upcoming months I plan to look/review the I-I District clubs' dues status and see what clubs have and haven't paid and see what clubs have qualified for the Early Bird Award for our District. Editor’s Update Hi I-I Key Clubbers, It has been a busy few months for me & the rest of the Executive Board! Since the last Iolian I have traveled to all 4 of our district’s Fall Leadership Rallies, celebrated Key Club Week, and continued working on our district’s social media.

International Trustee’s Update Happy Fall Key Clubbers! I’m in awe that its about 4 months into the Key Club year! These past months have been some of the best months of my life! I can thank my governors, my districts, and my fellow trustees for making it so much fun! As an International Board, we’ve been up to a lot. Here’s a glimpse into what I’ve been working on! So far, we’ve been heavily focusing on committee work, district visits, a new international campaign called Truly International, and our personal projects. This year, I have the honor to chair the Kiwanis Family Relations committee alongside the Pennilliana Trustee Independent Committee. I also get the opportunity to serve on the Growth committee and now, the temporary Hurricane Florence Relief Effort Committee. In the Kiwanis Family Relations Committee, we have been working on creating an International Key Club locator. We are looking to launching it in November! In the Growth Committee, we are hand writing ICON invitations to our undistricted clubs! We’re hoping that more undistricted clubs feel more welcomed to join us at International Convention in Baltimore. The International Board is implementing a new campaign called Truly International to promote Key Club. It’s a campaign focusing on what makes Key Club truly an international organization. Make sure to follow Key Club International to participate in giveaways and shoutouts throughout the next few months! As of personal projects, I have been focusing on starting up a K-Family mentorship program. I have been collecting advice from past experiences and other programs whose sole purpose is mentorships. I’m hoping to jump starting my first one by the start of DCON season! See you soon, I-I! Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation Hello I-I Key Clubbers! This is your KNRF committee giving you an overview of KNRF and what we do. (By the way KNRF is short for Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation). First off meet our committee members. First is Haleigh Flaherty. She is the Lieutenant Governor for division 22 South and is a sophomore at Heyworth High School. Next, Autumn Reed. She is the Lieutenant Governor for division 33-36 and is a senior at Murphysboro High School. Also, David Binkley. He is Lieutenant Governor for division 3-4 and is a senior at Dixon High School. Finally, your KNRF Chairwoman, Vidhula Srinivasan. She is Lieutenant Governor for division 28-29 and is a junior at Glenwood High School. Now what is KNRF? KNRF is the Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation and we fund doctors and organizations to help with the research towards diseases that deal with the central nervous system. Diseases like spine bifida, stroke, Alzheimerâ€™s, etc. If you want to help with our efforts please contact one of us bellow on how to donate or ideas for a fundraiser. Meet March of Dimes! The Major Emphasis Committee would like to introduce you to several service projects you can hold in November that benefit the March of Dimes, as well as some background information on this amazing charity! The March of Dimes, founded in 1938 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to help find a vaccine for polio, has been partnered with Key Club since 1978. Now, the organization works to advocate for policies and improvements for pregnant women and their babies. March of Dimes also works to reduce the number of premature births, as they can often have devastating affects on both the mother and baby. In order to help this amazing charity and work together as a District, your Key Club can hold a variety of service projects and fundraisers throughout the month of November, World Prematurity Month. The March of Dimes website, www.marchofdimes.org, is currently promoting #blanketchange, a campaign that is encouraging Americans to push their political candidates to provide better resources to pregnant women. Encourage fellow club members to speak up and contact your local candidates and start a discussion. Your club can hold a Purple Day on November 17, World Prematurity Day; encourage your whole school to wear purple, or sell purple bracelets or allow students to wear hats for $1 each! Another idea is to fill baby bottles with change during a club meeting or event. Donâ€™t forget to fill out the District Project Service Participation form, https:// iikiwanis.formstack.com/forms/district_service_participation so your donations so your participation can be documented! Leadership Development Update Hi! Guess who? It’s your Leadership Committee Co-chair coming at you with an update about all things leadership. Hannah, Natalie, Brianna, and I have been hard at work planning a fun and engaging session for all the incoming Lieutenant Governors. The bulk of our work is aimed at improving the binder and slideshow used to train last year’s LTGs. Although the these resources are already great, both the binder and slideshow had to be updated with current information. We have also established an agenda for the full day of training! Below is a loose outline of the training day events.

1. Begin slideshow: share a little about ourselves i. Icebreaker - Electric Pulse 2. Scavenger hunt in the room. Deciphered message is “caring - our way of life.” 3. Show recap video: highlight favorite parts about being an LTG through pictures 4. Review Quizlet, have LTGs compete with each other! 5. Newsletter designing practice activity 6. Brief forum on how to use/navigate Outlook (video demonstration) 7. Offer Service Project Ideas for DCMs → brainstorm out loud as a group a. Each Leadership Committee member shares an example of one we did! 8. Activity: LTGs write a note to their future selves and respond to prompts 9. Overview of Binder (Natalie and Brianna) 10. Closing: each LTG will receive an individual envelope with a small key inside and a note + LTG pencils 11. Address any questions or concerns by having them write questions anonymously on a piece of paper and placing it in a bag. End of training.

The committee has been brainstorming creative and engaging activities for the new LTG recruits. If you have any ideas of activities you have participated in the past and might work for us, please email ltg7@iikeyclub.org or ltg21@iikeyclub.org. We also plan to set up a social media place for all the LTGs to communicate with us if they ever have questions or concerns. This is still being discussed, but that’s all for now! Governor Tylerâ€™s Travels My travels started on September 23rd with the Southern Fall Leadership Rally in Edwardsville, Illinois! I had a wonderful time road tripping with the executive board and an even better time at the rally. I gave a presentation on training for club Presidents and Vice Presidents and helped lead the Key Leader forum! All in all, this was a fantastic event with great attendance and I am proud of the work that our southern LTGs did in preparation for the rally!

My second trip was down to Peoria for the Central Fall Leadership Rally! Here, I gave training for Presidents/Vice Presidents and led forums on running for District Office and Key Leader. Once again, this was an absolutely fantastic event!

My third trip was to my home club of Pecatonica High School for the Northwest Fall Leadership Rally! Here, I led the same forums I had in the previous two events as well as helping to sell root beer floats for my club. We had a great time with various fun activities and games and a whole lot of great information on Key Club!

My fourth trip was to Mchenry for the fourth and final Northeast Fall Leadership Rally! The LTGs all put a lot of hard work into the event and it showed. I had a fun time socializing with all of the members who attended, and I participated in my favorite fundraiser of all four Fall Rallies... Throwing water balloons at my fellow board members! Now, I wasn’t just throwing the balloons, I had a bunch of them thrown at me as well. All in all, it was a great time and we raised a great deal of money! My fifth trip of the month was out to Lacon, Illinois for Key Leader! For those of you who don’t know, Key Leader is a Kiwanis sponsored weekend leadership camp that anyone can attend! Students who attend learn about the major traits of a Key Leader and participate in various leadership activities with students from all over the district. This was my third time attending a Key Leader event and I loved it just as much as the first! I was joined by over 40 members from around the district as well as our International Trustee K’lena Schnack! I made memories that will last a lifetime and I encourage everyone reading this to look into attending next years’ Key Leader!

My sixth and final trip of this two-month period was to Auburn High School to speak at their club meeting and participate in a fun service project! I spoke about DCLC and encouraged the club members to begin fundraising for the event and then we all came together to make Christmas decorations! I thoroughly enjoyed my ti me with the Auburn Key Clubbers and I look forward to visiting them again soon!

March 9th-11th, 2019 Where? The Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg, IL Why? To meet new people, elect a new Executive Board, hear inspiring speakers, & learn more about Key Club. What fun events do we have planned? Dances, Trivia night, a Talent Show & so much more!! How do I register? Your Lieutenant Governor will email you registration information as it becomes available.

Have you applied for Awards? Hello all! Applying for awards is an excellent opportunity to receive recognition for all the hard-work and dedication that you guys have put into the Key Club Year! I definitely urge EVERYBODY to apply for awards as there is no harm in putting yourself out there for all the time and effort you guys would've committed into this organization. There are numerous categories in which awards are grouped into: Individual Club Non-Application International Miscellaneous Within these categories, there are numerous awards which span from being recognized as the "most-deserving" from your class to awards for donations to the Kiwanis Neuroscience Foundation. However, it is extremely essential that each club fill out the Annual Achievement Report. IT IS NOT MANDATORY! But other than that, be sure to take a look at all the awards that are open for application and work from there!

Club Spotlight : Pecatonic HS Written by: Kailee Hutenlocher, Pecatonica High School Ava Beck is an energetic eight-year-old. This last summer she was diagnosed with bone cancer. She has had to go through the loss of a leg, rigorous chemotherapy and so much more. Our community and many others have been fundraising for her in many different ways. So Pecatonica Key Club wanted to get involved. Late Septemeber, Key Club members decided to cut out feathers and shape them to look like wings to make a mural. The student body was also included to sign an encouraging message on the yellow feathers. This was placed outside one of our home games. Attendees, from either side of the team, posed in front of the mural with handmade encouraging signs. This was all formed into a video and sent to Ava Beck and her family. Everyone wore Ava shirts or the color yellow. We also did a Dash For Cash for Ava Beck. People dressed up in funny costumes and ran through the stands for a minute. This raised over $1,400 for Ava in only a minute! Key Club has also participated in running games for an all day and all night fundraiser in Pecatonica for Ava. This raised over $20,000 in only the silent auction! It has been very encouraging and an honor to Pecatonica Key Club to be apart of a massive rise of wanting to raise money and support for Ava Beck. We are Pecatonica Key Club and we are part of "Ava's Tribe."

At My First DCLC Written by: Jenna Lasky, Division 7 Lieutenant Governor It wasn’t until I became the Division 7 Lieutenant Governor of the I-I District that I recognized the enormity of Key Club. By attending District events, I increased my knowledge of our service partners, service opportunities, and learned new skills for becoming an effective leader. DCLC was a chance for me to meet amazing people from the middle-of-nowhere Illinois who I never would have encountered otherwise. I met our International Trustee at the time, Emily Rice, who is now our International President! I got to serve as a delegate and place my vote to elect the new 2018-2019 I-I Executive board. These people are now some of my greatest friends! Whether I was walking around in a too-tight pantsuit or enthusiastically greeting members, it proved to be a highschool career changing event. It was the launchpoint to my participation at the International Convention and so much more! I can’t wait for next year’s DCLC and I hope to see you there.
