At My First DCLC My first DCLC really put Key Club in perspective for me. Like many others, DCLC was my first time seeing a large number of Key Clubbers working together. As a freshman, I was incredibly eager (and slightly nervous) to meet Key Clubbers from all over the district. As I walked into the hotel and saw Key Clubbers from northern Illinois talking and meeting with Key Clubbers from southern and central Illinois, it showed me how Key Club unites us. I quickly learned how to just walk up to someone and say hello, and I met some of the most interesting people of my life, many of whom I later went on to serve and build friendships with. With informative workshops and time allotted to just talk to other Key Clubbers, it solidified my love for Key Club and confirmed my hypothesis that I would be in it for all four years of high school. DCLC changed my life, and I am looking forward to my third convention this year! Yours in Service, Charles Schneider Peoria Heights HS Key Club

Tips from your Treasurer Hello everyone! Here is some info I recently put out in my latest newsletter. Read and enjoy! –Anthony Palazzolo, District Treasurer 2016-2017 Fundraising and Service Project Ideas Here are some fundraising ideas with a holiday twist! 1. Salvation Army – your club goes to a local Salvation Army and volunteers to ring bells outside of various stores to help the people who are usually out in the cold. 2. Red Stocking – Your club asks for various present donations from people in the community and then delivers them to children who wouldn’t normally receive Christmas presents. 3. Special Gifts – your club could create a fundraiser where they make special customized presents to the person’s desire. It can range anywhere from ornaments to care packages with an assortment of gifts inside. All your club needs to do is buy materials and you can charge as much as you see fit. Dues At this point, a good majority of the clubs have turned in their dues. If you just so happen to be one of the clubs who has not yet turned them in, still send them in. It is very important that your dues are turned in. Dues are important if you want to be recognized by International for any awards you could receive, or if you want to vote in any elections at either International Convention or this upcoming DCLC. Your club has until September 30th, 2017 until they must send in their dues from the previous year along with a $100 reactivation fee. Kiwanis Outreach Kiwanis Outreach is very important to our Key Club District. It helps us raise money that we would otherwise be without. To receive these donations, it requires us all to go to Kiwanis clubs that are sponsoring your Key Club and Kiwanis clubs who don’t sponsor a Key Club and asking for donations. Relationships with our local Kiwanis clubs are very important to the future of Key Club and to the future of Kiwanis as well.

Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation What is it? This is a symptom of various diseases or medical conditions of the central nervous system that cause stiff or rigid muscles that interfere with walking, movement, or speech, known as spasticity. Research has included diseases such as brain tumors, spina bifida, Alzheimer, Fragile x syndrome, stroke rehabilitation, etc.
Let’s learn more about Spina Bifida: Spina Bifida is a birth defect in which a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly. This often results in damage to the spinal cord and nerves and often can lead to physical and mental disabilities. There is currently no cure, although there are ways to reduce risks.
Researchers to know: Dr. David G. McLone is a Professor and the Head of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children's Memorial Hospital affiliated with Northwestern University in Chicago. His research focuses on the cause and improved methods of treatment for spina bifida, hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele.
Why is this important? Spastics raises money for not just one, but for many causes. With everyone’s help, we can raise money to help researches such as Dr. David G. McLone expand our knowledge and treatment for these diseases to help find cures and limit the effects of the diseases.
How can you help? Local fundraisers are a great way to help raise money for this cause. Spreading awareness and knowledge of the disease through organizing service projects and attending key club events for Spastics are great ways to get involved. Check out our websites for events and ways to help donate for the cau

Club Spotlight - November Time to honor clubs in our District that have been doing tremendous work in their homes, schools, and communities! Want to know how to get your club in the spotlight? Email an article and pictures of a service project that club has done to editor@iikeyclub.org or use the template in www.iikeyclub.org! We’d love to see! Covers of Comfort Since the start of the school year the Dubuque Senior High School Key Club has been working on a project creating tie blankets to give to the organization Covers of Comfort. Covers of Comfort is a local group to the city of Dubuque with the purpose of donating tie blankets to cancer patients. The blankets are given to area hospitals and distributed to patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. These blankets help provide a sense of comfort and support to individuals being treated for cancer. In the past, members of Dubuque Senior’s club have run bake sales to fundraise for the organization and have recently started making the blankets themselves. With donated materials by generous club members and a few Saturday mornings, 10 blankets were made with the goal of making more as funds become available. Many dedicated members even took time out of their busy Homecoming weekend to help create these blankets. Consider donating blankets to hospitals and local animal shelters this winter. Creating tie blankets is a simple craft and great way to show your community you care.

Club Spotlight - December 300 YUDA bracelets will send Dulce Duarte Diaz to high school for a whole year Our Key Club is selling hand-crafted YUDA bracelets to raise funds to send a 13-year-old Guatemalan girl to high school next year. Dulce Duarte Diaz is an 8th grader in San Martin Julotepeque, Guatemala. She has 3 sisters and a mother. The money she makes goes to help pay for school. Dulce’s mother supports the family selling snacks at the private school in their town. Every morning, Dulce, her mother and sister The Rochelle Township High School Key prepare the snacks before school, which she Club sold YUDA bracelets during the lunch hours for a week at $7 each. The says she enjoys. She likes school, too and adjustable bracelets come in a variety of studies hard to be a good student. She has said “It makes my mother feel proud.
