Governor’s Update Hello Illinois-Eastern Iowa Key Clubbers! I am Kortny Marsh and I am your District Governor for the 2019-2020 service year. In the past couple months that I have been in office, I have been very busy training and attending conferences in order to best serve you! I went to San Francisco to attend the Governor and Advisor Training Conference (GATC), International Convention in Baltimore, and I will be going to Indianapolis in a few weeks to meet and work with our new International Trustee. International convention was a blast and Illinois-Eastern Iowa was tied for the second largest number of people there at 60 attendees. I hope to see even more friendly faces next year in San Francisco! I was just there for GATC, and the city and its tourist attractions are gorgeous! Start fundraising now, and let’s bring a record number of I-I key clubbers to convention next year! In my governor’s greeting, I outlined a few goals that I had going into the year. I have been working on these goals and would love to share my progress. In order to make sure the Lieutenant Governors are fully prepared to serve their clubs, I hosted a training session for new lieutenant governors before August Board Meeting, structured the August Board Meeting to help them grow, and updated their resources folder. Another thing I wanted to work on this year is the effectiveness of committees. As a way to combat confusion on what their expectations were, I created detailed committee directives that laid out their responsibilities. I believe this will alleviate the ongoing issue of committees not knowing exactly what they need to do. Lastly, the Kiwanis Family Relationships committee has been working with Illinois-Eastern Iowa Circle K to promote the Kiwanis Family Picnic at Starved Rock on July 12th from 12pm-4pm! Your lieutenant governors have more information, and I would love to see you all there! The school year is around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about recruitment! Set up a table at back to school night, convince the incoming freshman to come to a meeting, and make your Key Club pride known! The louder, more excited, and more persistent we are, the more recognition we will get. Just remember, the larger the membership: the more service that can be done, the more future leaders, and the more lives touched. Until next time! Kortny Marsh 3
Hello I-I, I am Alec Kridner and I have the pleasure of serving as your new IllinoisEastern Iowa District Secretary! This fall I will be a Junior attending Pontiac Township High School. Surprisingly, Key Club is not the only extracurricular I invest my time into. I am also highly involved in Student Council, Scholastic Bowl, and I also intend on forming a Model United Nations club this year! Outside the long hours of school; I work at a Nursing home, I study domestic and international politics, and I force my friends to pander to my desires of traveling. This year, I have 4 overarching goals: to fill in the gaps where Kiwanis Advisors/Faculty Advisors are missing, to build one-on-one connections with LTG’s to boost roster retention, have 10% more rosters turned in than the following board, and to coordinate with the New Club & Reactivation Committee to have struggling clubs begin to turn in rosters once again. Statistical Secretary’s Update I hope everyone is enjoying summer so far. So many clubs have been turning in their MRF’s so far, and I’m excited to have been able to read all about your activities. So far we are sitting around an average of about 50% of MRF’s being turned in a month. Let’s get this number up! I want to know how your club is doing, so we an spread ideas or give your club needed help. I’m very open to suggestions on how to encourage clubs across the district to submit MRF’s. You can add suggestions in the “Additional Comments” section of the MRF, or you can contact me in whatever way you choose. MRF’s are here for clubs to use to their benefit. This is the main way for the District Board know how clubs are doing. They are a great way to ask for help and pass on ideas. Your club can even win an award for having all your MRF’s turned in, and another for turning them all in on time. If your club has missed a month, don’t worry. You can still turn them in even if they are late. You can go back to February 2019, but please do not try to turn them in way ahead of time. If you are going to turn in an MRF late, I ask that you confirm that the MRF is for that proper month in the “Additional Comments” section. If you need help filling out an MRF, you can reach out to your LTG or myself. Important MRF points: 1. You can turn in MRF’s back to February 2019. 2. MRF’s are always due on the 10th of every month for the month before. 3. Put as much information as you like in your MRF’s. 4. Ask for as much help as you need. 5. Treasurer’s Update Dear Key Clubbers, I hope you all are having a great summer so far! My name is Alison Deng and I am your 2019-2020 Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Treasurer. At June Board, I provided an updated Treasurer’s Report on the 2018-2019 year (we have over 90% of dues turned in, which is a huge success) and presented on next year’s district budget, and it was approved! If you have any specific questions about the budget, please direct them to the form created (https://forms.gle/9Tppy98qygtFqhfZA) to address your questions about anything related to my role as treasurer, and some of these could be featured in future versions of The Iolian. I will also be answering your questions on an individual basis, so please do not hesitate to ask anything. As a heads up, there are three important dates that you might want to know. September 1st, 2019 is the first day that clubs may start submitting their dues for the 2019-2020 year. November 1st is the early bird dues deadline. As a reminder, if clubs turn in their dues early, they will receive a patch, and this year, I plan on also sending out hand-written thank-you notes. I hope that all of you will choose this option to turn in your dues early! However, December 1st is the final deadline for all clubs to turn in their dues. I cannot stress enough the importance of dues. Not only does it help lower the cost of DCLC for members, but it is also important for the district budget to operate properly. Next week, I will be going to the International Convention in Baltimore, Maryland and hopefully learn a few more skills to help the district. During the summer, I will also be compiling resources for all the clubs regarding their personalized budgeting plan, fundraisers, and tips for collecting dues. If there is anything else that you guys will be looking forward to in the resources or need help with, please let me know. Furthermore, I began a remind group to easily send out text reminders and for you guys to reach out to me. If you are interested in joining, please text @iikey to 81010. Editor’s Update Hello I-I! I hope you have been having an amazing summer! I sure know that for me summer has been flying by! I just got back from ICON-an amazing experience to say the least! If you were not able to make it to ICON, I highly encourage you to check out our ICON section (pgs #-#)! One thing that I am so excited to start working on after this summer is an online survey to see how we can advance the distribution process for the Iolian. I love getting to create the Iolian but I realize the problem not everyone being aware of it or having easy access to it. So by August Board my goal is to have a prototype of a survey that we can send out at the beginning of the school year. My hope is that this survey will point us in the right direction to make the Iolian easily accessible and well known. I also can not wait to start figuring out what key clubs have and not has club editors. I-I desperately needs more club editors (we have the talent to do so!) Even with the business of life, I am still so honored to be your District Editor and can’t wait strive after and beyond the goals that I made at DCLC. Summer is the best time to do so and I encourage y’all to keep up your passion for Key Club-even if it may be summer. International Trustee’s Final Update What’s up I-I! I cannot believe it is already this far into the summer! This year has been absolutely wonderful. The Pennilliana District absolutely thrived and it was all because of YOU! I want to give a big shout out to each and every one of you for dedicating your time and effort towards making this organization better. It was truly an honor and privilege to serve such an amazing district. I remember the first time I visited the district board and I most definitely remember meeting y’all at DCLC. There was never a moment where I wasn’t proud to serve this district. From having the best governors, Tyler Swanson and Kortny Marsh, to being the home of the 2019 Key of Honor recipient, how could I not be proud? I hope you had the chance to attend ICON in Baltimore because it was a blast! Key Clubbers from around the world got to discuss important issues, share hilarious stories, and buy exclusive Key Club International merch. It was so much fun seeing so many attendees from the I-I district! For those of you who didn’t get to attend the 2019 Key Club International Convention in Baltimore, you can’t miss next year’s convention in San Francisco!! Now is the time to start fundraising because you won’t want to miss the amazing things the new International Board is planning. Just because the end of the International Service year is coming to an end doesn’t mean your service can stop! This is the perfect time to prepare for the crazy school year ahead. This fall I will be a sophomore at Batavia High School. As well as being in Key Club, I play baseball and am in student council. I am eager to start meeting with clubs and making them the best they can be!

Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Kylie Green and I am so excited to be serving as your Division 16 LTG! I'm currently a sophomore at Muscatine High School and am involved in tennis, orchestra and Student Council. I've been in Key Club since freshman year and have always loved volunteering and helping my community. In my free time I like to hang out with my dogs, Lucy and Trixie and going shopping. I cannot wait to see what the 2019-2020 year has in store!
Division 22N Hello! I am Ali Barton, and I will be a sophomore attending Pontiac Township High School for the upcoming school year. Recently, I was inducted as the 22N Lieutenant Governor during the June District Board Meeting along with several other LTG Elects. As a fresh face to the I-I District Board, I am excited to work with the clubs in my division and to build new as well. The outcome of serving others is rewarding knowing that together, we are making a difference in society. Aside from Key Club, I am also involved in Peers in Action, Student Council, Youth Group, and work on the side. In my free time I enjoy traveling, playing in the band, drawing, and spending time with my friends and family. How Impactful Can ICON Be? “What is Key Club?” On the surface one might say that Key Club is the largest student-lead high school service organization, but it’s more than that. Key Club is a way to meet the potential leaders of the world. It’s an orangization that not only spreads across the US, but is also making strides to become “truly international.” This past week I was given the opportunity to attend the Key Club International Convention in Baltimore, MA. Let me tell you this was an experience I will never forget. Between realizing the true value of Key Club and getting poured on in D.C. I will never forget the journey. I met some amazing people and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for my Key Club path. -David

Kiwanis Kiwanis Family: Family: Circle Circle K! K! Hello graduated Key Clubbers,
My name is Christina Sanderson and I am the Governor of Circle K International's Illinois-Eastern Iowa District. I heard that a lot of amazing Key Clubbers just graduated and I would like to welcome you to the Circle K International family. CKI is known for its familial bonds as well as its amazing service projects and leadership opportunities. In CKI, the possible projects are endless and depend on your imagination, but if you're not the creative type there are plenty of other places where you could strive. On top of that, if you want to get even more involved past the club level, the district chairs often create committees to aid in all aspects of event planning.
You may be familiar with our Kiwanis Family Picnic where members from all branches of Kiwanis come together for a potluck, fun games, and a small service project. Great news you have the opportunity to experience one of these picnics. July 20th from noon to 4 pm at Starved Rock in Oglesby all of Kiwanis will be gathering for our Hungry Hungry K-Fam Picnic and you are welcome to join! It is a Hungry Hungry K-Fam Picnic because this year's district theme is board games so be prepared for plenty of fun! f you are interested or just want to see what CKI is all about feel free to either email me at governor@iicirclek.org or go to our Facebook page “Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of Circle K International” and click that you are going to the picnic.
If any of this interests you then currently, there are fourteen CKI clubs across Illinois and Eastern Iowa but if your college does not have a CKI then don't worry it is super easy to create a club. The first step is to gather 14 other friends who want to serve with you then contact me. My administrator and I will find you a Kiwanis club and then all that is left is paperwork. If you don’t know if your college has a CKI feel free to contact me at governor@iicirclek.org and I can get you in touch with the president or help you charter your own club!

Question And Answer How do you propose we grow our community outreach? I would suggest hosting events that are open to the community. Your club should work together to get the word out far enough in advance to give potential participants time to work it in schedule. Also, do not aim for just one age group. Try to plan an event that is welcome to all age groups.
What volunteer work should we start partaking in that we aren't already? Consider getting involved with fundraisers of Key Club International’s Service Partners. My personal favorite is Eliminate Week, part of the International Eliminate Project which is pledged to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. The whole week is dedicated to fundraisers and
ends with the E-lemon-ate Challenge where people on social media are challenged to eat a wedge of lemon and donate $5. Furthermore, you could consider basing your events off of the awards that our district hands out each DCLC. We have district-specific projects such as KNRF
which raises awareness for central nervous system diseases. The schools that raise the most money for KNRF gets a special award. If you need more specific fundraiser ideas, you can contact me (treasurer@iikeyclub.org)

Question And Answer Part Two How do you propose we keep our participation up as the year continues? The best way to keep up participation is by making personable relationships. Find out what works for your members,find out what they enjoy and also find out what they don't exactly like. If you can make Key Club more personable for each member, they will be impacted greater and in turn, love Key Club even more.

It also motivates your members to serve more (it worked for our club) when you post service project pictures. It also lets you connect with the other clubs in your area.” “Reach out to other service-based organizations.” “Our theme for next year is A Million Dreams for the World We’re Gonna Make! How can we make the world a better place? Brainstorm ideas and pick your focus.” 20

These events are easy to sign up for as a group and do not require much time or external experience. They are a good choice for a large group of volunteers and usually offer different volunteer stations depending on how you would like to contribute.” “To get more volunteers, try collaborating with other clubs present within the school and organizing service opportunities that pertain to both clubs. For example, our school has an Environmental Club, so it would be a good idea to pair up with members from Environmental and help clean up the parks in order to gather more people.” 21
