LETTER FROM THE GOVERNOR
Hi, I-I! As mentioned in our April Edition, my name is Ella Mastin, and I am honored and excited to serve as your Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Governor for the 2022-2023 service year. After completing my SAT, AP Tests, and final exams, I started by summer with our first Board meeting of the service year. From June three to five, our full I-I District Board met in Oakbrook, IL to receive training from the I-I Executive Board regarding their positions as a Lieutenant Governor. We had an amazing weekend of fun, education, Robert’s Rules of Order, and Key Club moments. Although I have been thoroughly enjoying my summer with my family, friends, and I-I District Board, the school year is closer than we realize. To prepare, I have been creating recruitment resources that will be released on the I-I website (iikeyclub.org) July 15. You and your club will be able to access these resources by visiting iikeyclub.org, then selecting “Resources”, then “Member Resources”, and finally “MeetYourMark”.
But, you may be asking, “What’s ‘MeetYourMark’?”. Great question!! MeetYourMark is I-I’s membership growth initiative, focused on Lt. Governor and club created, District Executive Board reviewed, membership goals. This campaign, continuing from the 21-22 service year, encourages clubs to grow their membership meaningfully and thoughtfully, keeping their reasonable goals in mind. Prior to the start of the school year, Lt. Governors will reach out to their Executive Boards to review goals created by themselves and reviewed by the I-I District Board. Finally, International Convention is only a few days away. If you will be there in person, I can’t wait to see you! If you will be attending online, I can’t wait to see how you apply what you learn to your clubs. No matter if you are attending in-person or virtually, make sure to take lots of pictures and notes, make lots of friends and memories, and have fun!! Yours in service and always in friendship, Illinois-Eatsern Iowa Key Club District Governor Eleanor Mastin

JUNE BOARD MEETING RECAP From June 3rd-5th, the Illinois Eastern Iowa District Board held our June Board Meeting. On the board, this annual meeting serves to help district officers map out the upcoming service year, collaborate on ideas and initiatives, and reflect on the past service year. At this year’s June Board, membership and growth were particularly emphasized and discussed. As we continue to recover from the inactivity caused by the pandemic, we aim to rebuild and rejuvenate clubs across the district. To do so, we plan to use our returning “#MeetYourMark” initiative. #MeetYourMark allows Lieutenant Governors to work with clubs to set a personalized membership to encourage clubs to not only maintain their current membership, but to grow as well. Also, we discussed ways that our New Club Building and Reactivation committee can aid clubs in the process. For instance, this committee, along with our Marketing and Resources committee, discussed plans to create new training binders for new clubs, advisors, and officers. In addition, we planned many fun and exciting events for Key Club members across I-I for the year! In just a few months, one of these events, the “Fall Leadership Rallies” will be upon us! These events are service and leadership forums that will be held in September and October at a variety of locations across Illinois-Eastern Iowa; at Junie Board, the I-I Board brainstormed ways to revamp these rallies. We decided to make them more accessible for clubs by hosting them at multiple schools on different days, giving members and advisors a variety of locations and dates to choose from. We plan to make these rallies not only a fun experience but also a great opportunity for members to sharpen their leadership skills as the school year begins!
As a whole, the District Board used the June Board meeting to make the new service year as fun, easy, and fruitful as possible for club members! With even more resources, initiatives, and events planned for the 2022-2023 service year, the meeting provided us with a great starting point for our terms ahead. We cannot wait to share all of our ideas and plans with you soon!
Your 2022-2023 I-I District Board members at June Board!
KIWANIS NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH FOUNDATION
Greetings I-I District Key Club members! “If you had $1, would you spend it on FINDING A CURE or IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE of a child afflicted with a disease of the nervous system?” Your Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation (KNRF) funds doctors to do both, which is why we ask for twice as much support from our Kiwanis KFamily. Did you know that KNRF is funded only by the K-Family of the I-I District? Founded in 1952 as the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation, your I-I District Foundation has provided more than $7.5 million in grants to doctors to search for cures or find improvements in the quality of life for children and adults afflicted with nervous system diseases. It’s effective! We’ve met Mila, now four years old, who had surgery to repair her spina bifida before she was born BECAUSE OF YOUR DONATIONS, which gave her the chance to develop without many of the issues associated with spina bifida. And Mila is just one of many children who benefit from your donations.
We need your help: our progress is paced only by your donations. I-I District Key Club has committed to giving $30,000 this Key Club year to KNRF. Plan your fundraisers now to help these children! The need is urgent… A tri-fold brochure which describes the mission and passion of KNRF, as well as our need, is attached. Speaking for the researchers and the patients, children and adults, who benefit from their work, THANK YOU in advance for supporting KNRF. Ken Whitmore Executive Director I-I District Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation 2006-2007 Past Governor Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis International (ps: Search Facebook for “Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation” then watch the videos describing what the doctors are doing and “LIKE” us!)

HOW TO BUILD OR REACTIVATE A CLUB 1.Find a Kiwanis Sponsor There are many ways to find a local Kiwanis Club including personal connections, social media, through a local Lieutenant Governor, and the Kiwanis Club Finder. The Kiwanis Clubs love to sponsor Key Clubs! Personal Connections- If the potential advisor or a potential club member knows a member of the local Kiwanis club, this is a great way to get into contact with the club and ask about sponsoring. Social Media- Many Kiwanis Clubs have presence on different social medias, especially Facebook. Many clubs also have their own websites. One easy way to find local clubs is by searching “*School Town* IL Kiwanis Club” . Kiwanis Club Finder- Kiwanis International has a Kiwanis Club locator in which you simply enter the name of the town in which you wish to start a Key Club and can see local Kiwanis Clubs. This locator includes when and where the clubs meet. You may attend a meeting to speak to a member about creating a Key Club or ask for the information of the club executive board to get in contact with them at a later date. Many clubs’ social media and websites are also linked under their meeting location on the locator 2. Find a School Advisor On to step 2! After finding a Kiwanis Sponsor, it is incredibly important to find a school advisor. You may know of a teacher interested in sponsoring, which makes this step much easier. If you do not know of a teacher interested, it is best to ask students of the school to ask around and see if any teachers are interested. If this does not lead to anything, you can reach out to teachers listed on the school directory with information about Key Club and its benefits to the students and sponsors.
3. Recruit Members Next up is recruiting members. A Key Club must have a minimum of 4 dues paying members. There are many different ways to recruit members, but the most effective way is by “word of mouth”, meaning club members encourage others to join. 4. Set Funds Aside In order to be an official Key Club, you must register with Key Club International. When registering, the club must pay either $400 or $600 and will receive many official Key Club items (i.e. $400- wood gavel, wood bell, training materials for officer positions, $600- all listed prior and a club banner). There are many ways to fundraise for this with resources below for fundraising ideas! 5. Complete Chartering Form The Chartering Form is located below and allows for a club to be included in Key Club International, without filling out this form a service club is not considered a Key Club. The form is fairly comprehensible, however if you have any questions at all feel free to reach out to a local Lieutenant Governor, statsec@iikeyclub.org, ltg3-4@iikeyclub, ltg14@iikeyclub, or governor@iikeyclub. All of these people are dedicated to helping make Key Club better and would love to help you. 6. Start Service! Now your club is ready to start serving the community around us. The I-I District is happy to have you and would love to help you in any way possible! Visit iikeyclub.org for service ideas to get you started!
SERVICE SPOTLIGHT GLENWOOD KEY CLUB Yellow Tulip Project: Hope Garden Glenwood High School now has a Hope Garden, planted by the school’s Key Club on November 13, 2021 for the Yellow Tulip Project. Yellow tulips are significant as they represent happiness and hope for the future. YTP is a non-profit organization led by youth with a mission to “help smash the stigma around mental illness and to build community to remind people that there is help and hope for those living with mental illness”, as stated on their website. The organization has 406 active youth ambassadors from five countries and 36 U.S. states, and have planted half a million tulip bulbs. Furthermore, more than one million people have seen YTP’s “I Am More: Facing Stigma” photo exhibit. The GHS Key Club members do their part to maintain their tulips with a weekly watering committee and trash cleanup. Their Hope Garden is a way to raise awareness and support mental health. Students are free to stop by, and the benches also provide a place for student support groups to meet.
SERVICE SPOTLIGHT BELLEVILLE WEST KEY CLUB Bridges Spring Fling On April 29th, 2022 the Belleville West Key Club had their annual Bridges spring fling. This is the first time since COVID-19 that the club was able to hold this event. Bridges is a program for students who have completed high school, but they have special needs that are addressed up through age 22 to help them become independent adults. The spring fling was held at Crehan's Irish Pub & Banquet Hall located in Belleville. With their Kiwanis sponsors behind them, the Key Club stepped up to the plate and delivered when the day came. The Key Club members split themselves into two groups to get things done. One group went straight to Crehan’s to begin decorating, while the other went over to Bridges for hair and makeup. Overall the club just went above and beyond to make the moment special for the students in the Bridges program.
Stay tuned for more service spotlights in upcoming Iolian issues!
