Governor’s Update Greetings Key Clubbers! It's January, which means it is time to start registering for District Convention!! By this time you should be getting information about the convention from your Lieutenant Governors and let me tell you, it is going to be AMAZING! If you have not been to District Convention before, I strongly encourage you to attend. This is the event that most Key Clubbers regard as their best Key Club experience! I went to my first convention as a freshman and it completely opened my eyes to all of the wonderful things that Key Club does. My first convention is what put me on the path to becoming your Governor! So please, join us from March 8-10 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois for a weekend full of fun, laughs, and unforgettable memories. You won't regret attending! See you at convention! That's all for now! Thank you for reading this update and enjoy this month's Iolian. International Trustee’s Update Hello Again I-I!
This year has been flying by. I just recently hit the halfway mark through my term. As much as that saddens me, it also gets me motivated!
Here are a few things that I would love to fill you in on! The International Board has been working hard on revising the International Bylaws, reaching out to international clubs, and strengthening our relationship with the other K-Families. We are heavily focusing on an initiative called “Truly International”, series of competitions, interviews, events and more created to highlight our members and show what makes our organization Truly International. Recently, we just closed a t-shirt design contest, but you can definitely still go vote! The winning t-shirt will be featured in the Key Club store. Another thing to look forward to is the release of a google map with all the clubs in Key Club International! Time to see where you can charter! The next international board meeting will be held in Baltimore at the end of January. There, we will be finalizing preparations for International Convention, collecting resources for District Conventions, and of course....enjoying the food of Baltimore. Be sure to be looking out for your district’s District Convention registration. It’s an awesome and easy way to make new friends!! And who knows...you may catch me there! See you at DCLC! Yours in Service,

I-I Thirsty Thirty Pledge Hello I-I District! On January 28th, a great charity paired with Key Club is holding an amazing fundraising opportunity that has the potential for great things to happen-funding clean water projects! The event is called Thirsty 30, and here is how your club can easily get started according to the Thirst Project website:
1) Know how many people are helping fundraise. This will help you out in the next step to reach your goal 2) Label envelopes with numbers on them, then hand them out to everyone who is helpingthe idea is to collect the amount of money listed on the envelope. So, if your envelope says "20", your goal is to collect $20! Try changing the amounts on each envelope to make more of a challenge! 3) You have 30 days to collect the money! That's where "Thirsty 30" comes from.
Now here is some quick math to help motivate you and your club to raise money for the Thirst Project: If a club with 30 members has envelopes labelled at just $20, they would raise $600! Now make that number $50, and they'd have $1,500! If a club with 100 members has envelopes labelled at just $20, they'd already raise $2,000! Now make that number $50, and they'd have $5,000! Thirst Project's main fundraising goal is to fund a well for an in-need village; that is $12,000. With the I-I District clocking in at more than 200 clubs, this goal is very feasible. Let's make this happen! Don't forget to follow Thirst Project on Twitter @thirstproject for constant updates and other ways to help. Lily Russel Major Emphasis Committee Chair

Who’s pumped for DCLC 2019?? Hey I-I District! I hope you all have had a great break and happy New Year! 2019 means District Convention is coming in just a few months (well 8 weeks) but who’s counting. We all know how sweet service can feel so what’s a better way to celebrate all we have dedicated to our schools, homes, and communities than a candy themed convention! As always convention brings sweet new friendships, learning, leadership, and of course service but what’s new this year? We’re so excited to include our first trivia night as well as new engaging forums and speakers. Convention will begin Friday March 8th and end Sunday March 10th. Registration information should have been sent out by your Lieutenant Governor, if not please email me dclcchair@iikeyclub.org. I look forward to seeing you all in March! Sincerely, Melina Colucci DCLC Chair dclcchair@iikeyclub.org

KNRF Committee Update Hello I-I Key Clubbers! Thank you for reading this month’s Iolian! We hope that you have had a wonderful service year! The KNRF Committee has been working very hard since the start of our term in March. We have done things like planning events like the events at DCLC, have sparked some amazing fundraiser ideas, and much more. But our work is not done. Our main focus right now are our events at DCLC. We are currently working on our KNRF walk and our KNRF luncheon, both being held during DCLC. Once our January board meeting comes around we will work more on these events and finalize them. We hope that you enjoy these upcoming events and we hope that you have enjoyed this update. Thank you! Yours in service, The KNRF Committee

Club Spotlight : Rochelle Township HS Written by: Rochelle Township High School Key Club Most of them hadn’t ever baked anything and wanted to bake everything to guarantee that tomorrow’s Key Club Bake Sale during the Kiwanis Chili Days at Hicks Hall in the United Methodist Church 11 am to 6 pm will be a success. The stakes are pretty high. Kiwanis’ mission is to end MNT (maternal & neonatal tetanus) in our lifetime. It’s a sure & painful killer which has been obliterated via a $1.80 vaccine series in more than 3 dozen countries. But in 14 countries, MNT is still a mother’s greatest fear. Proceeds from the bake sale will be used to send RTHS kids to the district convention where they can pow-pow with Key Clubbers from other schools to share the most effective fundraising ideas. At tomorrow’s Chili Days, you will get a bowl of steaming hot secret-recipe Kiwanis chili, cornbread, a choice of beverage and a homemade dessert. Either as you enter or before you leave, please browse the Bake Sale table which this year features both traditional cookies like salted-caramel, oatmeal chocolate chip and frosted sugar cookies as well as decorated jumbo pretzel rods and for non-sugar patrons, there will be pumpkin spice chex mix and Jimmie Rhodes’ unbelievably good Tex Mex Chex Mix. “He started with a ranch/taco seasoning base and then he got creative with chili/lime spice & cinnamon Cheerios,” Club Advisor Danae White said. Bake Night Veteran & Key Club President Mandi Lamb and KEC Culinary Student Izzy Erickson guided the new bakers, offering tips on methods, decorating and packaging. Bakers like Alexis Dreska and Leslie Rodriguez took leftover ingredients home so they could bake tonight for tomorrow’s sale. Time was up before freshman Kiley O’Brien could bake a batch of brownies. She and friends Willow Ames & Emily Garcia made a pact to participate in bake night every year until they graduate in 2022!

Club Spotlight: Dixon HS Written by: Emma Johnson, Dixon High School Editor In 2018, America was rocked by school shootings and the lives of high schoolers changed forever; Dixon High School was personally plagued by this epidemic. On May 16, 2018 an armed 19 year-old student entered the high school and intended harm upon the student body. By some miracle Mark Dallas ,our school resource officer, was able to intervene by firing several shots that inevitably stopped the shooter which saved countless lives. After a day off, we returned to school on May 18th. Later that day a gunman entered Sante Fe High School in Sante Fe Texas and took the lives of ten innocent students. Once again we realized how close we were to a similar horrifying situation and our gratitude towards Dallas continued to grow. Dixon Officer Mark Dallas was later named “Officer of the Year by the International Association Chiefs of Police for his tremendous courage on that almost tragic day. Even though his bravery can never fully be repaid, our Key Club decided to show our appreciation by repainting his parking spot; a few club members decided to meet up to set our plan in motion. Eight quarts of paint and 6 hours later, we finished painting the parking spot fit for a hero.
