Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation What is it? This is a symptom of various diseases or medical conditions of the central nervous system that cause stiff or rigid muscles that interfere with walking, movement, or speech, known as spasticity. Research has included diseases such as brain tumors, spina bifida, Alzheimer, Fragile x syndrome, stroke rehabilitation, etc. Let’s learn more about Spina Bifida: Spina Bifida is a birth defect in which a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly. This often results in damage to the spinal cord and nerves and often can lead to physical and mental disabilities. There is currently no cure, although there are ways to reduce risks. Researchers to know: Dr. David G. McLone is a Professor and the Head of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children's Memorial Hospital affiliated with Northwestern University in Chicago. His research focuses on the cause and improved methods of treatment for spina bifida, hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele. Why is this important? Spastics raises money for not just one, but for many causes. With everyone’s help, we can raise money to help researches such as Dr. David G. McLone expand our knowledge and treatment for these diseases to help find cures and limit the effects of the diseases. How can you help? Local fundraisers are a great way to help raise money for this cause. Spreading awareness and knowledge of the disease through organizing service projects and attending key club events for Spastics are great ways to get involved. Governor’s Update Hello Illinois- Eastern Iowa Key Clubbers, I hope all of you have been staying warm this winter! As some of you may know, my term as Governor will be ending rather soon, and I wanted to say thank you. This past year serving along side of you guys has been rewarding, life changing, and outrageously fun. Thank you for all that you do for your communities and for the District. I am so proud to say that I am an I-I Key Clubber, and I am honored that you all gave me the opportunity to serve as your Governor. I hope that this past year of service and leadership has been as fun for you as it was for me. I can't wait to see you all at District Convention & Leadership Conference March tenth through the twelfth! If you are not already registered, please head on over to iikeyclub.org to do so! It is going to be a wonderful weekend, where we are able gather to discuss service and leadership. It is a great way to meet other Key Clubbers in the District, and also it is where the next District Board is installed. There will be dances, and interactive workshops, and a few too many puns about boats and the ocean. With the theme as Just Keep Serving, how can I not? Please reach out to myself or your Lieutenant Governor if you have any questions about District Convention and Leadership Conference. Something else very exciting for our district is the reinstallment of Key Leader, a Kiwanis sponsored outdoor leadership camp. It is March 31-April 2 and is very different from District Convention And Leadership Conference. This is a weekend that you spend learning about yourself and your leadership style, and less about Key Club. As a former Key Leader 'Graduate', it is a fantastic experience. It really focuses on personal development and leadership skills. Students that are not Key Club members are encouraged to come, so bring a friend not in Key Club. Secretary’s Update Hello, I-I Key Clubbers! It's Oviya, your District Secretary. I just want to give you guys an update for how rosters are going: As of February 4th, we only have 38% of rosters submitted, which means only 81/204 clubs have turned in their club board information. Only 81! Key Clubbers, rosters are very, very important. It is what allows us to stay in contact with YOU. You can find the form at iikeyclub.org, under the Forms tab. Please consider taking 5-10 minutes out of a club board meeting to fill it out together, you only have to do it once! If we can get enough rosters submitted in the next few weeks, we can get in contact with more club boards before the new District Board takes over. I believe we can reach atleast 90 clubs by DCLC, but I can also bet if everyone takes 5-10 minutes out of one day, we can reach 100. I believe in you guys! Keep up the good work! Treasurer’s Update Hello Illinois-Eastern Iowa Key Clubbers! For this last Iolian submission, I would like to thank you all for an amazing year. A lot of dues have been turned in and almost all the divisions have at least 50%of dues turned in. With this submission, I will be sending out the dues report so clubs know for sure if they have paid or not. (view here) Along with this, I will be sending out some fundraising ideas that could be fun for your club to do. 1.Valentine’s Day Carnations/Crushes – go out and buy either carnations or boxes of Crush soda. Have days for people to sign up and send the carnations or sodas to specific people. Then on a certain day, have designated people give the specified persons their soda or flower. 2. St. Patrick’s Day chocolate Doubloons – go out and buy an assortment of chocolate coins. Have days for people to sign up for and address bags of chocolate coins to a person of their choosing. Then have a certain day for a Key Clubber to go and distribute those bags of coins to the specified people. 3. Dodgeball – have a designated date to have the dodgeball tournament. Then get teams together of about 8-10 people. Have teams set against each other and then they can have fun playing against each other. 4. Car Wash – come up with a date to hold the car wash. Make and sell tickets in advance so you have a certain number of people to come. Advertise at school and around your neighborhood to support the event. 5. Kiss the Seniors Goodbye – go out and buy an assortment of Hershey Kisses. Have a designated day for people to sell the bags, and have a designated Key Clubber to distribute the bags to the designated Senior. Thank you all for an amazing Key Club year. Statistical Secretary’s Update Hey, I-I Key Clubs! District Convention & Leadership Conference is coming up real soon, so I hope many of you are pumped for a great weekend! I just want to thank everyone for doing such an extravagant job and I am beyond proud to have served as your district statistical secretary this past year. At this time of the year, you should have your Club Monthly Report Forms from April 2016 to maybe January 2017 submitted. If you haven’t submitted any of them yet, please do so as soon as possible! You can always go back and fill out missing report forms. Remember that the next Club Monthly Report Form is due on March 10th, which should cover your club’s events from February. Your monthly reports are important for the district board, as it allows us to assist you and improve our district as a whole. You can fill out the form at this link: https://iikiwanis.formstack.com/forms/club_monthly_report_form. Please note that missing 2 or more consecutive monthly report forms will put your club in a position of “not in good-standing” with the district. This will keep your club out of the House of Delegates at District Convention, which means you will not be able to vote on amendments and your next district leaders. So please, keep in mind the importance of these MRF’s, and let’s get all these missing ones in before the next I-I District Board gets installed. Our goal for the district is to get around 60% of monthly report form submissions. To reach this goal, please submit any missing report forms and the upcoming one. Editor’s Update Hey I-I Key Clubbers! I hope you all have had a wonderful year of service and able to fulfill all of the goals that you set for yourselves, your clubs, and your divisions. I hope that you all enjoy what is in store for you at convention as well. Meet new people, make new friends, and learn as much as you possibly can. Don’t be afraid to talk to board members either! It’s always great to ask questions and learn more about our organization and how it works, and no one knows that better than the district board. I have sincerely enjoyed serving I-I on the district board over the past year and I loved reading every single article that was submitted to me, even if it was not included in the final draft of the publication. Submissions are very much appreciated, so please be sure to continue or start sending them in to the editor next year, whoever that may be. And remember- you don’t have to be an editor to send in submissions! If you want to write about something awesome and impactful that your club has done, go for it! Get the word out! You have a voice, so don’t be afraid to use it. All in all, I just want to thank the wonderful members, clubs, lieutenant governors, and advisors of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District for making my term as District Editor something that I will remember and will impact me for the rest of my life. Senior Spotlight Emily Brooks is a senior that attends Plainfield North High School. She has been volunteering for the past four years and has volunteered more than two hundred hours this year already. Club Spotlight Covers of Comfort

Since the start of the school year the Dubuque Senior High School Key Club has been working on a project creating tie blankets to give to the organization Covers of Comfort. Covers of Comfort is a local group to the city of Dubuque with the purpose of donating tie blankets to cancer patients. The blankets are given to area hospitals and distributed to patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. These blankets help provide a sense of comfort and support to individuals being treated for cancer. In the past, members of Dubuque Senior’s club have run bake sales to fundraise for the organization and have recently started making the blankets themselves. With donated materials by generous club members and a few Saturday mornings, 10 blankets were made with the goal of making more as funds become available. Many dedicated members even took time out of their busy Homecoming weekend to help create these blankets. Consider donating blankets to hospitals and local animal shelters this winter. Breakthrough 2017 This January I was fortunate enough to be one of nineteen students in the inaugural class for Key Club's newest program, a service immersion experience called Breakthrough. Breakthrough took place January 2-8 in Miami, Florida. Myself and eighteen other Key Club members from all over the United States and Canada were able to experience a trip that quite honestly changed each of our lives. When first selected for the program, I was excited for a free trip to Miami, who wouldn't be? But now, as I look back on my trip, I see that we could have been right here in Illinois and it wouldn't have impacted me any less. I now see that the location of the program was irrelevant. However, what was relevant was the experience that I had while serving the community of Miami. We started our week with a project at the Miami Children's Museum where I was able to build a connection with the children in a day camp that the museum provides. Volunteering at a museum doesn't sound like much of service project, well it didn't to me at first, but it was the perfect start to the week and I truly feel that we impacted the kids we worked with. Our next project was at Chapman Partnership, a center for homelessness relief. Chapman was a very unique experience, one that I would never expect from volunteering at a homeless shelter. We were able to work with children age 2 all the way to age 18, planning and executing a field day for them. After spending four hours at the center with these kids, I had built a strong connection with a 6 year old named Adrian (name changed for privacy reasons). Adrian told me all about how he wants to be a doctor in the future, how much he hates math, and how he and his family had moved to Chapman from a hotel. Leaving him and the other children at the center behind was heartbreaking, it's insane how strong of connections we built in just a few hours. Our next Miami service excursion was to Centro Campensino, a migrant farm worker community, where we learned about farm worker social issues including low pay, unsafe working conditions, and a lack of basic human rights. After sitting through a very eye opening presentation, we went to a retirement community onsite to play bingo. Despite what you might think, playing Bingo with twenty women who speak only Spanish was a complete blast. My Bingo partner, Ada, was so loving and kind, and the extent of our conversation was Spanish letters and numbers and "hola" & "gracias". I've never built such a strong relationship with someone who I can't really communicate with-- it was a truly unique experience. Our final service experience was at the Wow Center Miami, a center for adults with developmental disabilities. For many of us participants, this was a very unique opportunity because the Wow Center has an Aktion Club that we worked with to complete an onsite service project. Many of the participants, including myself, had never worked with an Aktion Club. I was able to work one on one with my Aktion Club buddy, Amie, to paint the parking blocks in the Wow Center. Spending my day with Amie was one of the highlights of my trip, and everyday I think about the lessons she taught me about love and kindness. After each project we had very in depth discussions about the service we were doing and whether it was beneficial to those we were serving or not. Overall, Key Club Breakthrough changed my life and taught me so much about service, leadership, and even myself. If you get the chance to attend next years program, go.
