Governor’s Update Hey Key Clubbers, I hope you all are enjoying your summers! It has been quite a busy summer here on the district board and I would love to share some of the really cool things we have been up to in this update. As you read in our June issue of the Iolian, the I-I district has unveiled our new 5 year strategic plan to help us grow our district membership to 11,000 for the first time in history! Since then, the executive board and I have been developing strategies for us to reach the goals we have set in the strategic plan. I cannot list all the strategies in this update because they are still being refined, but you will see them in action this fall! Fall Leadership Rallies are coming up! These are great one day events where club officers can be trained, club members can learn more about Key Club, and everyone can learn about our charities and upcoming events! This is a wonderful, free event that will elevate your perception of Key Club. For me personally, Fall Leadership Rally is what led me to becoming a Lieutenant Governor and Governor! You won’t want to miss it! Be on the lookout for information on your Local Fall Leadership Rally from your Lieutenant Governor!     

Statistical Secretary’s Update Hey Key Clubbers! You guys have been doing an amazing job this summer by devoting your time to helping others and I am so proud of you. I'd like to start off by thanking you guys because you've kept me updated through it all. I do want to remind you that reports will be due for June-August on September 10th. Remember that clubs who are missing all of their reports will be considered in bad standing with the I-I District and if you're missing all or 2 consecutive reports, you lose delegate status at DCLC. Secretary’s Update Hi everyone! Hope your summer has been going well, and I hope you’re all ready for the upcoming school year! Since June, I’ve been working on a newsletter schedule to keep everyone in the loop, updating the Master Directory, finalizing and submitting June Board minutes, attending International Convention, prepping for and taking minutes at Aug Board. I plan to email club secretaries soon and push for those rosters (remember the deadline to get the RIOT award is September 15!) Treasurer’s Update Hey I-I Key Clubers!!! Because school is right around the corner, this is a great time to brief you on some pretty cool events and fundraising opportunities coming your way. These items are a perfect way for you and your fellow key clubbers to spend some time to get to know one another and find out what Key Club is all about. Without further ado, here we go. The first items you should know about coming up is your I-I Fall Leadership Rallies, or FLR for short. In our I-I District we host four of them throughout the fall depending on where you live. At our FLRs you can learn more about how to be a great officer to your club, learn more about how Key Club operates, and raise money for some of our organization partners. Plus, if you go to your local FLR, your name gets put into a raffle to see if your DCLC can be 100% paid for by our I-I District!!! If you have any question about which and when your local FLR is, don’t be afraid to contact me! I cannot wait to see you all at one of our four FLRs!! The second item of business is Kiwanis Outreach. Kiwanis Outreach is a way for Kiwanis Clubs who don’t sponsor a Key Club to help I-I District out. The Kiwanis Clubs invest $100 to our district to help pay for communication, transportation, and make sure we have enough money to host our amazing events throughout the year. Contact Kiwanis clubs around your area to see if they will donate or sponsor a club. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a shout. The last and certainly not the least are dues!! With the school year about to start, it is a great time to start figuring out how to pay for dues. Starting September 1st, clubs can officially start to pay for their 2018 – 2019 dues. If your club turns your dues in by November 1st, your club will then receive The Early Bird Dues Award at DCLC in March. Dues are $12 per member for your club, $5 stays with our district to help pay for events and other materials for our district. The other $7 goes to the Key Club International Board to help pay for our amazing ICONs hosted every year in the summer. If you have any questions about how to pay dues or anything in regards to them, please contact me. I will gladly help!! Thanks for reading! Editor’s Update Hello Illinois– Eastern Iowa District Key Clubbers, Wow, summer went by so quickly! Back to school is the busiest time of the year for most of us and it is easy to get overwhelmed and put Key Club on the back burner. However, this is the most crucial time of year for us as an organization! It is time to get out and recruit for the 2018-2019 school year! With the relaunch of our district’s social media I have been working to provide you all with new recruitment strategies on every Tip Tuesday. Also, your Lieutenant Governor should have sent you a brochure that I worked to design. This brochure is an easy way to explain what Key Club is to prospective members. If you need anymore recruitment resources please let me know! Remember that if you increase your club’s membership by five you will get an awesome prize at DCLC! Over the summer, I had the opportunity to receive my official District Editor’s Training at International Convention. I am excited to bring this knowledge to Club Editor’s at all of your Fall Leadership Rally’s. I can’t wait to meet all of you! If your club doesn’t have an editor, now is a great time to add the office to your club’s board. Please email me if you plan to do this so that I can help train your new editor! Meet Your International Trustee Hey I-I! My name is K’lena Schnack and I’ll serving as your trustee alongside the Pennsylvania and Indiana districts for the 2018-19 year! I come from the wonderful NebraskaIowa District. I live in a small town of about 2,000 in Eastern Nebraska. Being from this small town has given me the drive to spread my horizons and be as adventurous as I can! In my town, you can catch me at the local pizzeria attending Kiwanis meetings, in the school gym supporting sport teams through pep band or in the Speech Room searching for new scripts! Something unique about myself is that I have a designated Key Club notebook that I carry everywhere. I enjoy taking notes on every subject matter! It helps me stay on track of my work and duties. A few of my goals are to create a mentorship program within my sistricts, send out weekly conversation starters in the Pennilliana Facebook group, strive to have a successful year as chair of the Kiwanis Family Relations Committees, and to collaborate with the Growth committee to create a chartering guide for international districts. I’m ecstatic to learn more about the amazing I-I District, get to know everyone, and establish connections! Trick or Treat For UNICEF Hello key clubbers! This is Lily Russell, chair of the Major Emphasis committee here to share some information about an exciting upcoming event! On Halloween every year since 1994, Key Club participated in Trickor-Treat for UNICEF. The idea is simple; instead of going door to door for candy, you go door to door for donations for UNICEF. Itâ€™s an amazing way to raise funds for programs and causes worldwide, such as Iodine deficiency, HIV/AIDS, and the Eliminate project. A visit to the Kiwanis website shows the 5 simple steps to have your own Trick-or-Treat event in your Key Club. Make sure to order the collection boxes soon, as the pre order version will be shipped out early September. I highly encourage your clubs to include Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF in your service projects to help build the bond of your club, have fun on Halloween, and raise donations for awesome charities! District Service Project Challenge During the month of September, the I-I District is asking your club to hold Coin Wars in support of the Childrenâ€™s Miracle Network. Coin Wars can be held as a competition between each grade in your school. Establish drop off points around the school with different bins for each class. At the end of the Coin Wars, total the amount each class raised and award a prize (the spirit stick at a pep rally, free donuts in the cafeteria, etc.). Remember to have bins at football games and pep rallies!

You can even partner with your Student Council to make the project as highly publicized as possible. This can even help recruit new members!

Youth Opportunities Fund Does your club need funding for a largeâ€“ scale service project? Apply for the Youth Opportunities Fund Grant! Each year Key Club International reviews applications and awards clubâ€™s grants of between $100-$2,000. You must apply through the Key Club International website by October 15th to be considered for then grant. During the first week of January all applicants are informed if they have been selected. Consider applying and contact District Treasurer David Vargas (treasurer@iikeyclub) for more information or assistance with the application!

Want to travel? Meet our partners! Squads Abroad Squads Abroad is an international service trip organization focused on the issues of health care and education in the developing world. Squads Abroad wants to help Key Clubs travel abroad and have a meaningful and affordable cross-cultural experience while serving the children of the world. Each trip combines service with cultural activities with service and provides Key Clubs with a safe place to stay and staffers to help make the trip safe and stress-free. International Convention June 3rdâ€“ 8th the I-I District attended International Convention in Chicago, IL. As the host district, we welcomed all the attendees to our district and worked to ensure that convention ran smoothly. It was a blast and we canâ€™t wait to go to ICON next year in Baltimore, MD!

Key Leader Class of 2017 Key Leader was a fantastic experience all around. Not only was it a fun and entertaining time, meeting new people and making new friends, but you also get a more in-depth look at servant leadership and what that truly means. My outlook on being a leader changed entirely after Key Leader-- my term as newly elected president consisted of me working to knit my club together so we could help people as a cohesive unit. Beyond that, I met and became close friends with the man we now call our District Governor, Tyler Swanson, as well as dozens of Key Clubbers I now call my best friends. It really is a remarkable experience I highly recommend to all Key Clubbers and non-Key Clubbers alike. 18

Key Leader Testimonies Division 3/4 Lieutenant Governor David Binkley Key Leader Class of 2017 â€œKey Leader is one of my favorite Key Club events of the year. When I went my first time, I was making friends right off the bat and those friendships that I made still last to this day. You get to spend the whole weekend with people that have the same exact passion for service as you and that experience of meeting those people is priceless. Those people also have great things to share with you such as service project ideas or solutions to leadership problems. Those experiences that people shared with me, helped shaped me to be the leader that I am today. My favorite part of the event is the Key Leader Grams. We each had paper bags that we hung on the wall during the weekend and we could drop in pieces of paper into each others bags with something good to say about the person. At the end of the weekend you take down your bag and read all of the nice things that people think about you. Those Key Leader Grams still effect me today because it reminds me that I have an organization to go back to with amazing people in it. I can not wait to go back to Key Leader in October and create more unforgettable memories!"

Governor Tyler’s Travels Hello Again Key Clubbers! This summer I have done a great deal of traveling for the district! Here is where I went. International Convention

Last month myself and 50 other I-I Key Clubbers ventured to Chicago for the 75th annual Key Club International Convention! There, we took a boat tour of the city and saw all the beautiful sights, listened to some wonderfully inspirational Keynote speakers, elected the new international board, and had a ton of fun along the way! Next year's convention will be in Baltimore, Maryland and I hope to see you there! LeadCon Just a couple of weeks after International Convention, I ventured to Indianapolis for the Key Club Leadership Conference! Here, I met our new International Trustee K’lena Schnack and found out who our sister districts would be for the year. For those of you who don’t know, each trustee serves three districts each year. These districts become sister districts (Sistricts for short) and they work together with their trustee for the year! This year our sistricts are the Indiana and Pennsylvania districts! Together, our three districts and K’lena will be working together to strengthen Kiwanis Family Relations in our Districts. It’s going to be a great year!

Kiwanis District Convention Two weeks after LeadCon, I traveled to Peoria, Illinois, with our District Treasurer David Vargas for the 101st annual Kiwanis District Convention. Here, I spoke to the attending Kiwanians about the importance of Kiwanis Family relations and connected with Kiwanians from all over the district. I had a fantastic time at the convention and I look forward to going back next year!

Club Spotlight : McHenry West Written by: Isabella Carlson The McHenry West Key Club has helped to volunteer at the McHenry Kiwanis Soap Box Derby for over ten years. This year, the Soap Box Derby occurred on June 9. The Soap Box Derby is an event that encourages children in between the ages of eight through thirteen to build their own cars with the assistance of a parent or guardian. The McHenry West Key Club volunteers love to help the children achieve their goals of being a car racer.

This year, the volunteers helped at the concession stand, the score board, and with other jobs that needed assistance. Our volunteers really enjoyed working with the Kiwanis members that were working the derby. Since the McHenry Kiwanis club was in charge of the derby, our volunteers got to interact with the Kiwanis members, which was really fun and interesting. The McHenry Key Club also assist our Kiwanis club with the Peanut Day and the Shamrock Shuffle. We look forward to helping out again next year!

At My First DCLC Written by: Chloe Hardy, Sycamore High School When I first arrived at DCON 2018 I was more than blown away. To see so many people my age share the same interest (to impact lives and help others) was a sight for sore eyes. I was expecting to be be very little involved because of how new I was to Key Club, but in every workshop, meeting, and dinner session, I started to find my place in this amazing organization. The workshop that helped me the most was the Secretary workshop lead by Alex Marshall, and Ben Lennartz. I have never met a funnier couple in my life. There tips and tricks have really helped and I will continue to engage in new, good habits of bettering myself and others. I am so excited for the DCON's to come and I hope to inspire more people from my club and division to join in on one of the most impactful weekends of their entire life.
