Governorâ€™s Update Hello I-I District Key Clubbers! It is that time again, a time that we at the same time dread and anticipate. Welcome back to school! Here on the district board, back to school is an incredibly exciting time. Key Clubs begin to flourish once again, and it opens a season full of service, fundraising, and hard work. For Key Clubbers, this is an incredibly important time. I implore you all, whether you are an incoming freshman or an incoming senior, to go out and make this the Key Club year that you can look back on as your best. Find your Key Club story, create new service projects, consider running for district office, and make new friends! For those that have not heard, we have a new International Trustee! Emily Rice, coming from the Minnesota-Dakotas district, will be representing our district on the International level! You can find more information on Emily later on in the Iolian (page 8).

Here on the district board, we will be working hard to ensure you have everything you could possibly need to succeed, and if there is ever something more we could help you with, never hesitate to contact us. As we have said from the beginning, we are a family here in the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District, and we want every member off that family to reach their top potential. Secretaryâ€™s Update Hey Key Clubbers,

I hope you are enjoying your summer! A quick update on rosters: There are 25% of rosters turned in so far. While that does not seem like much, it is a fantastic start considering the following school year has not started. I hope to see lots of rosters turned in by September 17th to complete my goal of 65% turned in by the RIOT deadline, and 80% by the end of 2017. I know we can do this, and if your club has not yet submitted a roster at iikeyclub.org, be sure to do so ASAP! Confused? Questions? Statistical Secretaryâ€™s Update Hello Clubs! I have been hard at work finishing all the reports that have been turned in. I am proud to say we have lots of schools with 100% on time reporting and 100% reporting awards! This number can be improved though due to the fact many schools are just missing one or two reports to qualify for the 100% reports turned in. I would like to remind clubs that even the report is due the 10th of every month, you can still turn it in past this date, you can still receive the 100% reports turned in. The monthly report form should receive some minor changes this coming year, but do not fear it will only make the report easier to fill out. I would like to remind clubs about the impact of this form. This is one of the only ways the District and your LTG know what your school needs help with. If you do not fill this report out then we do not know what is troubling your club, prohibiting us from improving it. REMINDER #1: The monthly report form covers the previous month REMINDER #2: the next monthly report form is due September 10th, which will cover the months of summer (June, July, August) Thank you to all the schools that have been keeping up with these reports! Treasurer’s Update Hi Key Clubbers! I’m Aimee Hepperlen, your 2017-2018 district treasurer. As the school year approaches, there's a couple things to remember: 1. Dues! These must be turned in by December 1st, or November 1st for early bird. I would recommend having them in by November first to receive special recognition! Dues can be turned in as early as October 1st, so begin spreading the word to your club at your first meeting. Dues are $12 and are vital to the I-I district and key club international. If your 2016-2017 dues are not paid, this must be done by September 30th, 2017 or else your club will become inactive. Full information on how to turn dues in is posted on the I-I website. Please contact me with any further questions regarding the dues process! 2. Fundraising! There are so many great ways to fundraise for your school, community, and different organizations. It is a great idea to plan your fundraising activities now for the entire year! Some ideas include: ● Trick or Treat for Unicef (Halloween) ● Candy Cane Grams (Christmas) ● Carnation Sales (Valentine’s Day) ● “Crush” Soda Sales (Valentine’s Day) ● Kiss a Senior Goodbye (End of the Year) ● 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament (Anytime) ● Baggo Tournament (Anytime) ● Bake Sale (Anytime) ● Serving for a part of the proceeds at Culver's (Anytime) And so many more! Editor’s Update Hey I-I Key Clubbers! I hope you have had a wonderful summer and are as ready for this service year to get into gear as I am! This summer, I had the privilege of attending international convention for the second time in San Antonio, Texas and witnessed two members of our immediate past district board be elected to serve on the Key Club International Board! I also had the amazing opportunity to be a campaign manager and present a forum for other district editors and officers at the convention. It was an experience I won’t soon forget! If you attended international convention or district convention, you have the opportunity to be featured in the Iolian! Criteria can be found on page 20. Also feel free to notify your club editor about submitting articles about service projects your club has done for a chance to be featured in the Club Spotlight and also have a chance to win the Iolian award and/or public relations award If your club doesn’t have an editor, any other member can submit. If your club doesn’t have an editor, as promised in my campaign, I am willing to help train and implement the position into your club so you can utilize their services. Feel free to contact me at editor@iikeyclub.org for more information. You should also look forward to newsletter templates and a Key Club FAQ sheet being posted on the website once access is granted to our current technology chairperson. This is the same reason why the most recent Iolian and this one are not posted on the website as well. The next Iolian will be released on the 15th of September and submissions for the October Iolian will be due on the same day. Also feel free to contact me with any questions about submissions. Meet Your International Trustee Hello, I-I! I’m Emily Rice, your International Trustee for the 2017-18 year. I’m so stoked to work with you all this year! I want to take this time to share a bit about me, my platform, and your sister districts. I’m a rising junior at Fridley High School in Fridley, Minnesota, which makes me a mighty mighty Minn-Dak duck. This year, I’m also starting college at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities as a PSEO student. When I’m not studying or involving myself with Key Club, I work as a sound designer and music producer for various clients. My main line of work, though, is serving you. Throughout this year, I plan to serve by focusing on our branding techniques, building clubs and starting the chartering process of new districts, and working on our bonding with each other and the Kiwanis Family. I call this the Triple B Plan. You can read more about it on my campaign flyer and my social media accounts (by looking up emilyhrice.) Every International Trustee is assigned three districts to serve. I call these districts our “sistricts.” Our sistricts for this service year are Nebraska-Iowa, California-Nevada-Hawaii KIWIN’S, and you! This year will truly be a year to remember. A Message from the Awards Committee Hello Illinois-Eastern Iowa Key Club members! This coming school year, you should consider applying for an award. Every Iolian from now until the end of December, the Awards Committee will highlight some awards we think you should consider applying for. First off, is the Individual Awards. These are Distinguished Officer and Member awards that truly highlight how great you have been during your time in Key Club. Whether it's Distinguished President or Distinguished Freshman Member, there is an award for every dedicated Key Club member to apply for. There is also an award for members who have received 100 service hours or more! So start volunteering and check out the requirements for the distinguished positions! The 2017-18 Awards Booklet will be released on www.iikeyclub.org by the end of August. Thank you!

Youth Opportunities Fund Want to make a difference with a service project but need more funds to complete it? Apply to the Youth Opportunities Fund! The Youth Opportunities fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International that is held within the Kiwanis International Foundation and uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members do service to the world by

offering grants for service opportunities.

From the Key Club International Website--- The basics you need to know:   



YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST. Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. There is one funding cycle for YOF grants per year. Applications received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST are reviewed by the Key Club International YOF committee at their November meeting. Funding notifications are mailed no later than January first each year. Applicants must use the current YOF grant application. Previous years' applications will not be accepted. Guidelines for filing the application are also listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies

International Convention

International Convention 2017 took place in July in San Antonio, Texas and the Illinois Eastern Iowa District had an extremely successful and enjoyable week! Fall Leadership Rally 2017 If you donâ€™t know, Fall Leadership Rallies are like smaller District Convention and Leadership Conferences. New officers are trained, there are service projects, members can learn all about key club, there is a session for the advisors, and the afternoon is packed full of fun workshops! Fall Leadership Rallies are completely free to attend, and take place in the afternoon. If you want more information about your Fall Leadership Rally, reach out to Governor Charles or to your Lieutenant Governor! District Convention & Leadership Conference 2017 Hey I-I Key Clubbers! We hope you enjoyed your summer, but school starting means something great returningâ€Ś Key Club of course! We hope to see you at Fall Leadership Rallies and in the spring District Convention and Leadership Conference 2018 from March 9 to the 11 at the Crowne Plaza in Springfiled Illinois! Club Spotlight McHenry Westâ€™s Key Club helps the McHenry Baseball Association concession stand run smoothly and efficiently around 3 to 4 days a week through the months of April to October. Our job as volunteers in the concessions is to accurately handle the money coming in from the customers, giving the correct change and taking the correct amount. We also run the machines, making sure they are sanitary and functioning correctly. Our club receives 5 dollars per hour worked per club member who volunteered. Working in this environment gives our volunteers essential life skills that can follow them throughout the rest of their lives as functioning members of society. Not only does our club, club members, and the McHenry Baseball Association benefit from our volunteering, but also the charity and/or organization we donate the money made from the association. Overall our Key Club is never shy to lend a hand with our local baseball association, and we are always excited to donate our money to those dependant on the support of clubs like ours. Though our involvement with the baseball concession stand isnâ€™t life changing volunteer work, donating the money we earn definitely changes more lives than one.

Divison 11 // McHenry West

At My First DCLC… Our first DCLC experience was in 2017, March 10-12 in Oak Brook, Illinois. That year’s theme was “Just Keep Serving” and the message really came across in the whole spirit of DCLC. At first glance, the convention was pretty overwhelming but we decided to give it a go and sign up. Going to DCLC opened up a whole new world to us because before going, we thought that Key Club was just a small organization, but once we got to the hotel, we were surprised to see so many other schools. DCLC really made us realize the opportunities that we could have for ourselves and others. It was refreshing to see so many kids that weren’t just participating but also running the event. The student led atmosphere helped us be more comfortable and made things even more fun. We both also hadn’t ever been part of a large-scale democratic voting process and it was really different and cooler than anything else we had done in a clubs or at school. It really felt like we were part of something even greater. There were also events where people would speak about projects that they were doing, which we could also take part in, and a motivational speaker. Another fun aspect was the dance after every night and a pool! (Grace)- My favorite part about this year’s DCLC along with seeing democracy and student leadership was meeting my roommate. Brendan and I were the only ones from our club that went to the convention so I was nervous about having to share a room and a bed with people I have never met before. Then, we found out that Brendan got a ROOM TO HIMSELF and I was so jealous. But I am so glad that I wasn’t put by myself because I was able to meet my DCLC roommate Ellen! She was so nice to me from the start and even invited me to hang out with her friends from her school’s key club. We definitely had a connection and we still talk today! At My First ICONâ€Ś Imagine being surrounded by thousands of people who have the same passion for service that you do. Imagine sitting in a room listening to speakers who were once aspiring leaders like you but have now changed the world. Imagine spending one of the best weeks of your life with the people from your District and being bonded with them forever. This is how being at Key Club International Convention feels like. I can honestly say that ICON 2017 was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only was I welcomed and accepted by my fellow District members, but I was greeted openly by people from all around North America who hadn't known me leading up to the event. I sat in forums where I gained knowledge on Key Club values and service projects, I joined the District in fun activities such as spending a day at Six Flags, and I shared endless laughs with my roommates who were once strangers but are now sisters. To anyone questioning why they should attend ICON in the future, stop questioning it. Ask anyone who has attended in the past, and you will know that the experience will change your life forever, for Key Club and for how you live your life. I know it has changed mine.
