LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hello, Illinois-Eastern Iowa! Welcome to the 2022-2023 Key Club year! As we begin this new chapter, I look forward to the opportunities that this year will bring for us: from growing membership to reactivated clubs, the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District has great potential to become the most successful it has ever been. As the past two years have shown us, every division, every club, and every member has the power to make a change in their communities- even when we feel isolated from one another. Key Club members came together through Zoom service projects, virtual fundraising events, and even simple “Thank You” emails to those who needed it most. Now, as we continue to recover from the pandemic, it is more important than ever that we draw on the strong Key Club community that we have created. We can use the skills we have acquired in the past years and gain new ones as we come together for a year better than ever. Indeed, this can be a difficult time of the year for many; We as students spend most of their time studying for AP exams and finals, getting ready for summer internships and jobs, or even preparing for college. As a junior myself, I can attest to the fact that it is not easy to balance schoolwork with other parts of our lives. However, this is exactly why Key Club is important: while the organization serves our communities, it also provides us with peers who with similar experiences and those who give us a sense of family. So, as we all finish out our school years, I encourage you to continue serving with your club- and if you are a graduating senior, consider joining a Circle K club this fall. Not only will you better your home, school, and community, but you will grow as a person as well. Whichever stage of your high school experience you are in, we hope that you will continue to serve and stay a member of the Kiwanis family. On behalf of the I-I District Board, welcome to the new Key Club year; we cannot wait to see the amazing service that our clubs accomplish!

MEET THE 2022-2023 I-I BOARD GOVERNOR: Ella Mastin Works closely with the District Administrator to lead the I-I Board and clubs through all aspects of Key Club.
Hi I-I!! My name is Eleanor Mastin. It is my pleasure to serve as the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Governor for the 2022-2023 service year. Previously, I have served as a Lt. Governor, Major Emphasis Co-Chair, Club Treasurer, and Club President. Currently, I am a Junior at Joliet West High School. Our service year needs to focus on growth. The plan I created to achieve, surpass, and conquer our goals this year is SHARE. First, "service": the foundation of our club and the reason we exist can not be ignored. We must continue to perform service that is impactful in our homes, schools, and communities. Next, “harmony”: It is easy to forget that as Key Clubs, we are supported by our founding branch, Kiwanis, and that in turn we must support them in addition to Circle K, Builders, K-Kids, and Aktion clubs. Third, “accessibility”: In order to give clubs the most resources possible, I will make myself the most accessible to each Key Clubber by promoting my email and Governor’s Guide Instagram as easy modes of communication in addition to installing a new “Ask the Gov” portion of the I-I website. The most important part, “recruitment”: Each member is valuable, and the more members we can recruit, the larger scale service we can perform. Finally, “empowerment” for each and every I-I Key Club member through our member-benefit service partner, Erika’s Lighthouse. Hello! My name is Emma Debaene, and I am your new District Secretary! My goal for the district this service year is to facilitate clear, concise communication by aiding the redistribution of reliable contacts after the pandemic. Works with the I-I Adult Board to oversee the district budget, keeps track of membership and dues, and serves as the fundraising and financial student lead of the board.

Hi, I-I! My name is Avi Gogineni, and I am the District Treasurer for the 2022-2023 service year. This year, I aim to increase paid member numbers, spread awareness about dues with social media, and establish several connections with clubs around Illinois and Eastern Iowa. Keeps track of club activity, reviews monthly report forms, and helps distribute resources to clubs.
Hey, I-I! I'm Sage Reagan, and I am serving as Statistical Secretary for 2022-2023! I am incredibly excited to work with this board and know they and Key Clubbers from across the District will do amazing things! I hope to provide all clubs with resources they request in the MRF. "I'M NEW TO KEY CLUB. WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?" First of all, welcome! We are so excited for you to join the world’s largest service organization- from over 251,000 members spreading to 40 countries, you are sure to make an amazing impact and grow as a leader by being a member.
What is Key Club About? This is best expressed by our motto: “Caring- Our Way of Life” and our values: Leadership, Caring, Character Building, Inclusiveness What does the “Key” in Key Club mean? Key Club works under its parent organization, Kiwanis. Thus, the “Key” is for "Kiwanis Educates Youth." What organizations function under Kiwanis? The branches of Kiwanis are: K-Kids: a service organization for elementary school-aged children. Builders Club: a service organization for middle school and junior high school aged children. Key Club: a service organization for high school aged students. This is the largest branch of Kiwanis! Circle-K: a service organization for college and university students. Aktion Club: a service organization for adults with disabilities. Kiwanis: a service organization of adults. This branch oversees all of the other branches.
"WHAT DO ALL OF THESE ACRONYMS MEAN?" In Key Club, we tend to use a lot of shortened words and phrases. So, here are some of our most common ones to help you get started! I-I: This is our Key Club District, Illinois-Eastern Iowa, composed of over 7,500 members! K-Fam/K-family: The group made up of Kiwanis and its sub-organizations. DCLC: The District Convention and Leadership Conference; this is held every year in March in Springfield, IL. ICON: International Convention; this is held every summer, and the location changes every year. MRF: The monthly report form; clubs submit this form every month to share what they have accomplished and what they need from the district. COR: The club officer roster; clubs submit this form, consisting of a list of their officers and advisors’ contact information, once a year to help the board stay in contact with them. FLR: Fall Leadership Rally; this is a leadership training and activity session held every fall in our district KNRF: The Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation; this organization helps provide grants to top researchers specializing in diseases of the nervous system.
DCLC RECAP Last month, we held our 71st annual District Convention and Leadership Conference! From training sessions and leadership forums to dances and a hypnotist, DCLC was a great time to improve service skills and make friendships across the district. Here's what our members thought of the weekend!

"As a senior, this was my first and last DCLC, which made every moment of the experience more rich. The most significant moment to me was realizing how much work my club has done over the service year as well as everything we have accomplished. After serving as president, the experience really put into perspective how much of a difference one individual can make on a club, how much of a difference one club can make on a community, and how much of a difference an entire district can make on the world. DCLC RECAP HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DCLC EXPERIENCE? "I loved the atmosphere! Everyone was so nice and provided a great experience to come back to next year. My favorite parts were the dances and the lunches and dinners I got to spend with everyone."- Victoria Towle, Club Vice President, Limestone High School "There was an amazing atmosphere at DCLC, that was filled with happiness. I expected everything that DCLC was, amazing and a great opportunity.
