In the shadow of George Floyd’s murder at the hands of police, well-meaning White people have come out of their comfortable slumbers to find themselves unsure of what exactly allyship requires. They’re marching alongside Black people in ways and numbers never before seen in America’s long-standing fight for civil rights; showing up and declaring support for the Movement for Black Lives in outwardly public ways. And while much of the momentum has already translated into policy reform, Black folks are generally pleased, if not skeptical.
Based on opposite ends of the West Coast, automotive creatives Uche and Joshy Robots have been working out the ways car culture and race intersect. Uche recently got a call from Josh while out on a taco run. They unpacked a few experiences behind the wheel, sussed out the state of Driving While Black in 2020, and explored what can be done to push for positive social change.
