A new study has shown silica is not the only component found in engineered stone products which can pose serious concerns for lung health.

Silicosis is an incurable lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust over many years.

Professor Graeme Zosky from the University of Tasmania joined peers from the University of Adelaide to investigate the link between the chemical characteristics of engineered stone dust and lung cell responses to understand components of the dust that pose the greatest risk.

“Silicosis due to engineered stone dusts is a far more severe form of disease, developing over shorter time frames and rapidly progressing,” Professor Zosky said.

The research team used 50 engineered stones including natural stones and other building products and cut them under real-world conditions to collect the dust.

“This is important given the emergence of low or no silica products on the market.”

Alarming Reality: Under 5s at risk as swim education falls short and allow more disadvantaged Australian families to enrol in swimming lessons during SWIMSAFER Week.

SWIM Australia CEO Brendon Ward said: “The reality is cost of living pressures have been a concern for many families this year and unfortunately some parents have taken their children out of swimming lessons to manage financial constraints,” he said.

“The flip side is close to half of the parents surveyed kept their children in lessons by sacrificing spending on weekly takeaway, coffees, streaming services, and beauty treatments.”

While swimming might be part of Australia’s national identity and ranks as one of the most popular physical activities undertaken by Australians, the annual SWIMSAFER Report has revealed some alarming figures.

The report indicates that a substantial two in five (43%) families opt not to enrol their children in swimming lessons, attributing this decision to the perception that their children are deemed too young to commence

swimming education.

Furthermore, astoundingly over half (54%) of Aussie parents are not confident their child has the skills to help themselves if they get into trouble in the water. In addition, sadly, 16 children aged between 0-4 years old drowned last year, with a quarter (25%) of incidents happening in either backyard pools or the bath.

Many swim schools around the state offer programs for children as young as 6

months old, with a focus on supporting them to develop confidence and necessary skills from an early age.

This approach provides a solid foundation for a lifelong love of swimming.

Pushing further towards the goal of zero drownings, industry leader AUSTSWIM joined this year’s campaign, with AUSTSWIM CEO Bradley Low saying the partnership enabled another 700 swim schools and 31,000 teachers to share the

message.

“We are very proud to be aligned with SWIMSAFER Week and work together to make an even bigger impact on water safety awareness.”

“It’s very concerning that over half of parents are not confident their child has the skills to help themselves in a water emergency,” he said.

“By the age of six months, children can start infant learn to swim programs, where the child explores

and enjoys the water with their parents. Kids are exposed to water of all forms right from birth, so it’s important they get comfortable in and around water as early as possible.”

While the cost-of-living crisis has also impacted parent’s ability to get their kids to learn to swim with over a third (38%) of parents believing swimming lessons are too expensive, the SWIM It Forward initiative is aiming to raise funds to remove the financial barrier

“We know that the 0-5 years age group is particularly vulnerable to drownings, which is why it is imperative that we change the belief held by some parents that their child is too young to start water familiarisation lessons.”

While Swimsafer Week makes a splash from November 20-26th, emphasizing the importance of swim safety during this dedicated time, the safety and wellbeing of others around water should never ebb away.

City Mission Christmas Appeal Launceston City Mission and major sponsor Tones Electrical, will launch its annual Christmas Appeal on Friday, November 17, 2023.

“It’s hard to avoid the festive season with decorations and carols everywhere. It’s not a joyous time for everyone’” said City Mission CEO, Stephen Brown.

“In my 11 years as CEO of City Mission, this is the highest demand we have

ever seen, families and individuals in our local community are facing considerable financial challenges this holiday season,” Mr Brown said.

According to the Foodbank’s Hunger Report 365 percent of Australian households are now experiencing food insecurity due to the cost-of-living crisis.

“Prior to Christmas we usually expect an increase in the demand for our services, but this year will be different. We are concerned that the upcoming weeks will bring unprecedented demand for help.”

This year City Mission will be asking the community to 'give the gift of hope' to the many families experiencing

financial hardship, who may not have a Christmas meal or gift for their child.

“We’re asking the community to support local families and individuals in need - good people, who could live just down the road from you,” said Stephen.

It’s not just those experiencing homelessness or unemployment, there are many working families withing the community that

are struggling.

The rising costs of living, rent and utility bills have caused many residents in our community to lose their homes or experience food insecurity for the first time.

Donations to the City Mission Christmas appeal will help put food on the table and toys under the tree so kids can wake up to a present on Christmas Day.

Prostate Cancer ‘hot spots’ revealed after new medicine subsidy announced

It is projected that this year alone, 25,487 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 3,743 will lose their lives to the disease – a 25% increase in the number of deaths from prostate cancer since 2007.

Recent findings from the PCFA’s STARGATE Analysis of Prostate Cancer Diagnosis in 2023 have revealed high rates of advanced prostate cancer diagnoses in Launceston and North-East Tasmania, just as the Federal Government announces a new medicine subsidy.

This subsidy will allow thousands of Australian men battling an advanced form of prostate cancer to launch a three-pronged attack against their disease.

Medical experts are welcoming Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) access to the first and only medicine specifically registered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in triple therapy to fight cancer in a number of different and complementary ways as soon as it has escaped the prostate.

From 1 December, men

with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC), a cancer that has spread beyond the prostate to organs such as the lymph nodes, bone, lung and liver, will receive subsidised access to NUBEQA® (darolutamide) for the first time.

It will form part of a threepronged treatment, used alongside chemotherapy and hormone therapy (androgen deprivation therapy or ADT).

Developed jointly by Bayer and Orion Corporation, a globally operating Finnish pharmaceutical company, NUBEQA is an oral treatment option for metastatic hormone sensitive prostate cancer that is registered by the TGA for use in conjunction with androgen deprivation therapy and chemotherapy (docetaxel).

Genesis Care Medical Oncologist Dr Laurence Krieger explained that NUBEQA works to starve cancer cells of the hormones they need to grow and divide, while androgen deprivation therapy blocks production of the cancer-stimulating hormones, and chemotherapy works to destroy cancer cells.

Without the PBS subsidy, these tablets could cost more than $42,000 each year in addition to the cost of other anti-cancer medicines.

“Sadly, prostate cancer remains the second greatest cancer killer of Australian men. New treatment options are desperately needed,” he said.

The analysis shines a light on 20 regional and suburban ‘hot spots’ – including Launceston & North-East Tasmania – where prostate cancer is diagnosed late, and men are detected with advanced disease (Stage 4) at rates significantly higher than the national average.

Through the PBS, eligible men will pay just $7.30 (on concession) or $30.00 (general patients) each month for NUBEQA.

The major funding announcement comes as Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) releases a snapshot of advanced prostate cancer diagnosis across Australia.

“Every year nearly 4,000

Australian men will be diagnosed with incurable Stage 3 or 4 prostate cancers,” said PCFA CEO Anne Savage.

“The listing of medicines such as NUBEQA for more men is an important development for thousands of Australian fathers and sons,” she said.

“However, we need to continue raising awareness so that all Australian men get a fair chance of detecting prostate cancer early, so that we can beat it.”

“We are tremendously grateful to Health Minister Mark Butler for supporting men and families in our community with this new listing,” Ms Savage added.

PAC Unveils the Community Guide for 2024, Connecting West Tamar's Community Keen to make a difference in the lives of the elderly, acknowledging the challenges many face with the feeling of solitude, the West Tamar Positive Ageing Committee (WT PAC) has announced the launch of its first-ever comprehensive Activity Guide for the year 2024.

Goal 3: Environment, Safety and Wellbeing

Focused on providing meaningful connections, the committee aims to combat loneliness through social gatherings.

The guide showcases a range of available options, including classes, bus trips, educational workshops, and recreational events; ensuring there's something for everyone.

Packed with an array of events and programs, this guide is designed to cater to the diverse interests and preferences of our vibrant community of over 50s.

The PAC-tivity Guide was developed and supported by the committees three goals outlined in the Council’s Positive Ageing Strategy: Goal 1: Inclusion, Engagement and Participation Goal 2: Information, Facilitation and Support

From January through to December 2024, residents can look forward to a calendar brimming with exciting activities that promote social connection, health, and well-being.

This initiative aligns with the Council’s broader mission to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all residents.

The pump track will be located in the 900 square metre area of land between

the Charles St Bridge and the Boathouse Centre.

The City of Launceston will advertise a call for design and construction tenders for the new pump track and hopes to complete the project in the current financial year.

Pump tracks are surfaces of constantly changing elevation where bike riders are able to generate speed by pumping or lifting their bikes and then applying pressure, rather than pedalling, as they move over undulating features called rollers, berms and jumps.

Burning Questions: Tackling Bushfire Preparedness in Tassie!

Mt Nelson Bushfire (PHOTO: Supplied) Do you know what to do when a bushfire threatens your area? This bushfire season, it’s important to have a plan and know your options.

Tasmania Fire Service works closely with communities, local government, service providers and other government agencies to create Community Bushfire Protection Plans and implement bushfire risk management strategies.

Community Bushfire Protection Plans are tailored to individual communities at risk of being impacted by bushfire, to help people in these areas to prepare their own Bushfire Plan.

Tasmania Fire Service Acting Director Community Fire Safety, Chris Collins, said it was important for people to be prepared for when a bushfire threatens their community, regardless of whether they choose to stay and defend their homes, or leave early.

“Understanding the risks of bushfire and taking steps to mitigate these risks is important for everyone, but especially those living in bushfire prone areas,” he said.

“We want to make sure people are informed, prepared and ready for when a bushfire threatens.”

There are currently 139

Community Bushfire Protection Plans in place across Tasmania, with five new plans recently developed for the areas of Smithton, Ridgley, Irishtown and Edith Creek, Geilston Bay – Mornington and Primrose Sands. Additionally, nine existing plans have been updated in the areas of Rosebery, Lady Barron, Derwent Bridge, Nubeena, Margate, Sandfly, Middleton, Molesworth and Cradle Valley.

City Mission responds to Government’s Housing Strategy In response to the launch of the state government’s 20-year Housing Strategy on 16 November, Launceston City Mission have congratulated the state government on the launch of its Housing Strategy.

While at the moment, the end of homelessness seems a distant hope, particularly for those experiencing the reality of not having a place to call home today, nothing can be achieved without a solid plan for change. This strategy appears to be a solid plan for change.

Supporting young Tasmanians through grief and loss

Jess Sanders, Daniel Coote, Guy Barnett, Veney Hiller (PHOTO: Supplied) Palliative Care Tasmania (PCT) is pleased to announce the statewide launch of the "Learning Through Loss" website and resources, available at learningthroughloss.org. au Funded through the Department of Health, the program is a vital step towards continuing to provide free grief literacy education for educators and professionals working with young people and equipping them with the necessary knowledge and tools to support young individuals as they navigate the challenges of grief and loss.

The Honourable Guy Barnett, Minister for Health launched the Learning Through Loss website and resources at John Calvin School, Launceston.

Principal and Health Teacher Daniel Coote was in attendance and shared his positive experience of training in the program with the Minister.

Mr Coote and his staff participated in training with Learning Through Loss Coordinator Jess Sanders, he was so inspired by the training that he adapted the youth resource to create two classes on grief literacy as a part of the school’s health education.

The “Learning Through Loss” website is one of many initiatives the program is undertaking to make grief literacy and grief resources easily accessible to Tasmanians.

The website and online resources launched today include comprehensive downloadable tools including 'Navigating Through

Grief and Loss', a beautifully designed and illustrated resource for young people that explores grief and provides tools, resources and services to support them.

“It empowers and normalises all expressions of grief and then helps guide students toward processing it” says Jess.

So far, the pilot has delivered 16 training sessions with representatives from 31 schools across the State and provided training and support to 251 teachers and staff.

Minister Barnett spoke highly of the program and congratulated Palliative Care Tasmania on outstanding results in delivery across the State.

The Minister was particularly impressed by the Learning Through Loss poster which is displayed in schools and directs young people to a digital version of resources via a QR code.

Educators who have participated in the pilot training program have said; “I am very grateful for this amazing training as a teacher, as a parent, as a friend. It also helped me understand some of the reactions I had in the past, such as unexpected anger.”

“The training provided by PCT was valuable. We were given clear and concise strategies on how to support students dealing with grief and loss, and that loss can come in many forms.”

“It also provides clear information on how to access further support and the correct pathways to be taken in a school environment when supporting students.”

“As the school counsellor, grief is something that I deal with quite frequently.”

“Whilst I have extensive resources and experience in this space, I definitely felt that the Learning Through Loss training gave me

another tool to use in my work.”

“In particular, the student resource has been great. So accessible, so clear and great graphics. Highly recommend.”

In light of the program's initial success, and with ongoing support from the Tasmanian Government, Palliative Care Tasmania hopes that even more young people can benefit from the "Learning Through Loss" program.

Tales of the Tamar

The Old Tamar River Fishermen by Edward ‘Jack’ Windsor (Part 3) These men slung their own nets from materials purchased from the ship’s chandlers in Launceston when they were up in town.

They used three quarter inch circumference rope for the lines, slinging twine for holding the finished net together, corks for the float line, home cast leads for the lead line and commercially made bunts. The leads were cast in a little mould like a pair of pliers with a knock out pin which formed the hole in the middle. Often a man would sit at his fire pot in the boat and cast his leads whilst waiting on his set.

The ropes or lines were stretched or straightened by towing them behind the boat in the water to remove the kinks before the bunts were slung. The slinging was accomplished by hanging the ropes between two poles over a grassy field; the centre being propped up like a clothes line about four feet off the ground. The two lines were slung together by using the slinging twine wound on special needles, one for the lead line and one for the cork line.

Beginning about six feet from the end of each line the twine was tied firmly to the line with a half hitch kind of knot. If slinging a four and a quarter graball for instance, the slinging needle was passed through two loops of the bunt, and allowing for a hands breadth of space, another double half hitch was made around the lines.

This space was called a nussel, and was kept roughly the same distance apart all along the lines until all the bunt had been taken up. A seventy five yard bunt slung to about a fifty yard net.

When all the bunt had been taken up, the slinging twine was fastened off by a more substantial knot. About another six feet of the line was allowed and then the ends were spliced together to form a loop. The holes in the leads had to be loose enough so that the lead would roll along the bottom and not twist up the lead line.

There were two kinds of nets used. One was called a graball or gillnet and had enough leads to sink the whole net to the bottom and to press down the seaweed so the fish could not swim underneath. These graballs came in several different sizes; two and three quarters of an inch for large mullet and small salmon, three and a half for school trout, four and a quarter for trevally and trumpeter, five and a quarter for flounder.

This type of net caught the fish in the gills as it tried to swim through. The sizes of these nets were regulated by law so as to allow undersized fish to escape through the meshes.

These nets would be set in places at certain states of the tide where the fisherman from past experience knew that he had a fair chance of a good catch. The net was usually set at low tide amongst seaweed and the

Seals were a constant nuisance to the poor old fisherman; a single seal could rip great holes in a net in seconds. Therefore the fisherman stayed nearby whilst fishing in this manner.

The other type of net was called a seine; it was so made that the corks would float the whole net above the bottom. This type was used for casting on beaches and off reefs near the channel at low tide. The professionals' nets had the garfish bunt one inch mesh, at one end and the mullet bunt two inch mesh, formed the

rest, and about one hundred yards long. This net was laid up on the rear deck of his boat with the garfish bunt at the top.

When he arrived at his spot he would tie the garfish end to a small stake which had been driven into the sand at the edge of the now exposed reef. He would then row his boat out and around in a semicircle and return to the shore once all the net was out.

Here he would anchor his boat, get out and retrieve his net by gently hauling it in slightly above the waters edge, any fish he encountered were placed in a bag which he had with him.

Continuing along the net he at last came to the garfish end and here most of the fish would have congregated as they tended to swim along the net as he worked it towards the shore.

Forming a small wall in the water with the net by placing a handy rock on it above the water line, he would then retrieve his boat and return and scoop up the fish with a small landing net and place them alive into the boats well.

By this time the tide would have changed and covered his patch. He most likely at this juncture reloaded the net onto the boats stern deck and set off for his

graball set nearby, which he would also retrieve and if lucky, would have a few nice fish in it as well.

These old fishermen worked in the dark, the only light was from the sky, so everything about their equipment had to be just right. Most of the fish species were nocturnal and any sort of illumination would lessen the chance of a good catch being made.

The nets were tanned by soaking them in boiled wattle bark and water to both preserve and to darken them.
