George Town Doctor has international impact A local Doctor is spear-heading efforts to see a toilet block constructed at Ibeku High School located in Umuahia, Nigeria.

With over 4000 students and staff, the school has been without a functioning toilet for over 30 years, after the original toilet built in 1960 ceased working.

“It is not uncommon to see desperate ones urinating around the school” says Dr Gbenimacho.

“Students, boys and girls, ease themselves around the bushes close to the school, with some students being hospitalised for diarrhoea diseases, snake bites, physical and sexual abuse occasioned by poor hygiene and undue exposure to harm due to absence of a toilet facility.”

As the schools population continues to grow, so does the risk of outbreak of an epidemic in not only the school, but the surround-

ing community. A resource taken mostly for granted here, a 10 unit toilet facility is estimated to cost approximately $10,200 AUD, which equates to $2.8million Naira. Dr Gbenimacho and his high school graduating class of 1994/95 have pledged to raise the money, and between them have currently raised about $3000.

Dr Gbenimacho says that they aim to have the funds raised and handed to the school ready for use by December this year, but preferably sooner.

“Lives will be saved, health burden will be reduced and teaching and learning especially among girls will be improved if this project is realised.”

Mayor Holmdahl nominates for LGAT Presidency West Tamar Mayor Christina Holmdahl will be nominating for President of the Local Govenrment Association of Tasmania (LGAT).

George Town is set to receive 6.86 million in funding for the George Town Mountain bike Trail and Regent Square Redevelopment.

The 4.4 million dollar George Town Mountain Bike Trail will comprise a trail network approximately 105 kilometres in length located at Mount George.

Aimed at capturing the growing market of mountain bike trail enthusiasts, the project involves multiple trails that have been designed to accommodate users of various experience levels.

The 2.45 million dollar Regent Square redevelopment project aims to further activate the centrally location open space in the heart of George Town through the provision of purpose designed play equipment for various age groups, concrete pathways, park furniture, landscaping, plaza areas, signage celebrating the heritage of the square and a showpiece entrance feature.

The George Town Council have been advocating for both projects as a key strategic priority with Mayor Archer welcoming the funding saying “there has been strong community support for both projects to occur, this is why Council resolved to pursue funding for both projects as its number on priority”.

Economic benefits are estimated to be upwards of $12 million to the region stemming from the mountain bike trail alone, with Mayor Archer adding “the real value in these projects is in the physical and mental health benefits gained through providing spaces for social interaction and opportunities for low cost activity”.

In addition to planned projects in George Town the West Tamar municipality is also set to receive it’s fair share.

3 Million dollars has been delivered for the implementation of the Beauty Point Foreshore Master Plan which has been developed in conjunction with TasPorts and Tourism Northern Tasmania. The aim of the plan is to provide future direction to the community by providing better access to the foreshore and connection to the town, upgrade amenities, enhancing the natural and cultural assets of the area making it attractive to both locals

and visitors.

During community consultation it was identified the local Beauty Point community are most concerned about having an upgraded foreshore trail, improved access to the water, an upgraded innovative play ground, more picnic and BBQ shelters, more car parking, interpret the history, greater and better signage and maps to inform visitors, public amenities at Inspection Head and fitness nodes.

Ross Hart & Labor, plan to fix mobile coverage Labor’s regional communications

spokesperson, Stephen Jones, and Labor Member for Bass, Ross Hart have annouched that Labor will provide funding to help fix mobile blackspots in the Tamar Valley.

“There are a number of locationsthat should be been funded but were not and there are a number of black spots throughout the Tamar Valley like Grindelwald, Greens Beach, York Town and even Trevallyn in Launceston that are examples of this” said Jones.

Ross Hart MP said that the annoucement would make a huge difference to local communities.

“Residents in Grindelwald, Greens Beach, York Town and parts of the upper Travellyn around Reatta and Rowsphorn Roads are totally frustrated with Scott Morrison’s failed mobile phone rollout, which means they experience poor mobile coverage at home and at work” said Mr Hart.

In February, Tamar Rural Youth held a Dog High Jump Competition and a Ute Show and Shine Competition at the Exeter Show.

Fixing Youth Unemployment in George Town Leaders from the Bell Bay business community have met with local students and young members of the George Town community to promote and discuss the many opportunities that are available in the advanced manufacturing sector.

The event is the result of an ongoing partnership between the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone and the Collective ed initiative, which is working to support more students more students to attain year twelve and find a meaningful pathway after the completion of education.

Ben Bowring of Collective ed said that the event is part of the community effort to tackle high youth unemployment in the area, as well as to help fill imminet skills shortages in the Bell Bay precinct. “Around 30 per cent of young peopl in George Town are

unemployed, compared to 15 per cent statewide. At the same time, many Bell Bay manufacturers are crying out for more workers, with new businesses such as the proposed Patriarch and Sons timber mill set to further increase demand.

Vice President of Operations at South32 TEMCO, Anna-May Fauconnier, said that it was important for businesses to engage in events like this. “By talking with young people, we will be able to better understand their passioms and interests, and to help connect them to the huge range of local careers available in manufacturing.

6 The Soroptimist International of George Town celebrated International Women’s Day with their inaugural International Women’s Day breakfast on Tuesday 5 th March. At the Memorial Hall 120 people including George Town Mayor Bridget Archer and Ross Hart Member for Bass, gathered to enjoy a hearty breakfast. After a warm welcome by President Nora Wood, and some background to International Women’s Day from Soroptimist International Region President Carol Thomas, keynote speaker Jo Palmer was welcomed to the stage. Jo, a previous recipient of Tasmanian of the Year for her Charity and Community work, held the audience spellbound as she shared her very personal story with the audience.

Lions Youth of the Year competition success LIONS CLUB OF RIVERSIDE On Monday March 18th, the Riverside Lions Club hosted it’s heat of the 2019 Lions “Youth of the Year” at the Riverside Golf Club.

The “Youth of the Year” is held every year throughout Australia and is an opportunity for senior students to demonstrate their leadership capabilities and their knowledge of current events together with their public speaking skills.

This year Riverside Lions Club had four contestants; Rebecca

Hyatt and Joshua Abeling from Launceston College, Peta Antypas from Scotch Oakburn College and Gabrielle Dewsbury from St Patricks College.

The most important component of the whole event is the interview which was held during the afternoon. The contestants, their parents and teachers then attended a dinner at the Golf Club during which each of them answered two impromptu questions and then gave a 5 minute prepared speech. The judging panel consisted of Carol

Fuller and Amanda Claridge, both retired teachers along with Chris Sayer, a recently retired scientist and CityPark Radio host.

The final result was very close, but the Public Speaking winner and overall winner was Peta Antypas from Scotch Oakburn College.

Peta’s speech was entitled “Boys Don’t Cry” and looked at the stereotyping of boys and men in our society.

Peta goes on to the Regional Final and if she is successful, to the State Final at Forth in April.

What can I claim for my Car? Have you had any workrelated travel over the past financial year? You will need a record of all work-related kilometres that you have driven over this period.

For a kilometre to be tax deductible, it needs to relate to travel between two locations of work-related activity.

For example, if you work in Launceston and drive to a work-related training session in Hobart, the kilometres that you have travelled on that trip are tax deductible.

However, if you live in Riverside and work in Launceston, your daily commute to work is not tax deductible.

When can I claim home-towork travel The only time that travel from home to work can be counted toward work-related kilometres, is if you have an occupation that required tools that you must transport to and from work each day.

For example, if you are a music teacher with a drum kit or a handy man with a toolkit.

However, this loophole is not available to individuals that have a secure lockup at work in which tools can be stored.

It is also helpful to know that the maximum distance that you can claim for a vehicle under the cents per kilometre method is capped at 5,000 kilometres.

To all those tradies out there that have vehicles with more grunt: if you have a rig capable of carrying a load of two tonnes or more, you cannot use the simple kilometrebased method to make your claim.

All this being said, tax legislation can be notoriously tricky and the amount claimable often changes with individual circumstances. It is strongly recommended that you seek the advice of a tax professional if you wish to get situation specific advice that you can rely on.

LYN BURT George Town Football Club President It’s an exciting time for the George Town Football Club. There are many new faces around the club

to support this year who have shown ongoing commitment and dedication over many years. On the field we have recruited and focussed on bringing home grown talent back to the club. The focus has been to build a football community based on strong culture, family connections and building respect for the town. We have embraced the inclusion of women into the NTFAW and have a committed hardworking group, led by Captain Tyeisha Hinds and Vice-Captain Jasmine Digney.

The Senior Men’s leadership group instils the leadership and passion that we hope will lift our young player group. Luke Crane, Zach Burt, Jack Hulse, Shane Baker along with Allan O’sign bring significant knowledge and skill to the team. The encouraging aspect is the numbers of supporters and community members coming back to be part of the club. Player’s teas and training nights are a hive of activity and provide a social environment that many people are enjoying.

The focus of the committee over the off season was to develop a strong structure that can demonstrate professionalism both on and off the field and prioritized on building a strong, positive football community that the wider community supports and sees as benefit to the community.

We are the only winter sport played locally and invite all of George Town to get behind us all the way through the season. Win or lose we will be doing the best we can.

DENIS BROOMBY Bridgenorth Football Club President The Bridgenorth Football Club is looking forward to an exciting 2019 season with good numbers at the club pre season in all four grades, the club is thrilled to annouce that we will be fielding a women’s side this season and will be coached by Robert Beams, numbers have been fantastic at

training with a very young side that is full of enthusiasm and are looking forward to being very competitive in there first year.

The Seniors will be once again be coached by Brady Demiejer with Phil Lethborh as his assistant coach, the club has welcomed back several past players in Jake Nunn, Nathan Vanoord, Rogan Seargeant, Logan Wright, Jake Rice and we also have Garry Shipton coming on board as another assistant coach so the Parrots will be looking to improve on last season and play finals footy once again.

The Reserves will be once again be coached by Chris walker and with plenty of numbers to pick from on the training track we will once again look to improve on

The seniors cluubs first game will be up against reigning premiers South Launceston on Saturday the 13th of April, it will be a big day for the club as all four sides will be playing and we have one of our biggest functions for the year in the “Silent Disco” so get along and make it a big day for the Parrots.

Is George Town Australia’s oldest Town?

LORRAINE WOOTTON The claim that ‘George Town is Australia’s Oldest Town’ is based on the theory that Sydney and Hobart are now cities, and Sydney has ‘swallowed up’ smaller towns around it, but let’s look at the facts.

The First Fleet with almost 1,500 people arrived in Sydney Cove in January 1788, but settlement was not confined to Sydney for the next 23 years!

By March 1788 there was another settlement at Kingston on Norfold Island; it’s still part of Australia.

Govr Lachlan Macquarie Parramatta was settled in 1788 and, like Liverpool &1798) and other ‘satellite’ towns, is now a city in its own right.

Windsor on the Hawkesbury River is strongly promoted today as “Australia’s Oldest Town”. It was orginally called Green Hills, but was renamed by Govr Lachlan Macquarie soon after his arrival in NSW in 1810. The first land grants were made in 1794 and Windsor, Richmond, Pitt Town, Wilberforce and Castlereagh,

were all planned by Macquarie as a grid of streets surrounding a central square - just like George Town and New Norfolk by Macquarie as a grind of streets surrounding a central square - just like George Town and New Norfolk. Windsor is part of the larger Hawesbusy City Council, but is still a separate town.

After coal was discovered at Newcaste on the Hunter River in 1797, convict camp was established in 1801 and in March 1804 it became a convict station for secondary offenders.

In September 1803 the first 49 Europeans arrived at Risdon Cove under command of Lt John Bowen RN, intending to prevent French Claims to Van Diemen’s Land/Tasmania.

The first European settlement in Victoria was at present day Sorrento on the Mornington peninsula and named Sullivan’s Bay. Around 400 people under Capt David Collins RN arrived at Port Phillip on 9 Oct 1803, but four months later moved to the Derwent. David Collins took charge at Risdon and moved the settlement of Hobart across the river to Sullivan’s Cove where it is today.

In November 1804, Lt Col William paterson and over 200 people landed at Outer Cove (renamed York Cove in 1811). They camped in tents and makeshift shelters for a few weeks and one of three prefabricated houses became the first Government House.

Paterson immediately explored

the whole river and by mid December, had decided to move the settlement across to Western Arm, where York Town was built with a second pre-fabricated Government House.

After a shipment of 600+ Bengal cattle arrived in March 1805, it became obvious the area was unsuited to agrictulture and soon the settlement moved to Launceston where it was easier to clear land for farming.

Govr Macquarie visited VDL in 1811. While admiring Launceston’s picturesque location, he felt the Cheif Settlement should be closer to the sea. He selected the site of the first settlement, named it George Town, after King George III and planned the grid of streets around the Square that we know today.

The first plans were drawn by convict surveyor, James Meehan in 1812, but it was 1816 before work began to build the town, and 1819 before the administration moved from Launceston to George Town.

In 1812 Governor Macquarie returned to find George Town built. He named Regent Square and the streets, but as a consequence of the Bigge Report, the Headquarters returned to Launceston in 1825.

The Female Factor remained until 1834.

George Town may not be the Oldest Town in Australia, but it is built on the site of one of the oldest settlements - the first in Northern VDL/Tasmania. It is true Macquarie Town and Regent Square, bordered by Macquarie, Elizabeth, Anne and Cimitere Sts, is the Oldest Public Park in Tasmania.

GEORGE TOWN & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC - MONTHLY MEETINGS are held on the 3rd Monday of each month, starting a 7.30pm usually a The Grove, 2 Cimitiere St, George Town.

Meetings are open to the public. there is no charge, but a gold coin donation towards supper is apprecited.
