Friends of the Princess Royal Hospital Telford Ltd

Friends of the Princess Royal Hospital is a group of volunteers of all ages who work together to raise funds for the hospital.

Together we run a very busy Coffee Shop within the hospital, open weekdays 8.30am-6pm and weekends/bank holidays 10.30-4.30pm.

We rely on volunteers to help a small team of paid staff enabling us to maximise profits. All profits are used to buy equipment for the hospital trust and this amounted to £156,000 last year.

e Ugly Duckling has hatched...

With a waddle and a quack, The Ugly Duckling launched itself into the elite pool of top class eateries in Shropshire on 11th August, and we were lucky enough to be invited along for the opening night to witness the hatching of a beautiful new restaurant.

The Ugly Duckling, formerly The Bucks Head is situated just a few minutes away from Telford in Long Lane, has been completely renovated to the very highest standard. Partner in the restaurant, Sam McNulty, explained to us that they have been working tirelessly over the past 6 months to bring the project together, not only just with the renovation but by putting together a team of Chefs and staff that will make The Ugly Duckling a firm favourite for foodies from near and far.

I went along with my colleague, Andy for the grand opening and was immediately impressed with the finished result. The friendly and professional team, made us feel welcome straight away, showing us to our table and offering us a first glimpse at the exciting new menus. We ordered some drinks studied the options available. I decided that I just had to try the Roast Fig, Goats Cheese, Pinenuts and Shropshire Honey and for Andy, Braised Beef & Horseradish Cigars with Capers and Tarragon Mayonnaise (starters ranged between £5.50-£7.95) and we were provided with a

selection of nibbles, Apple Sauce, Smokey Bacon Popcorn, Wasabi Peas and Pork Crackling, which were great.

The starters arrived quickly and were even better than I had imagined, I hadn’t had the pleasure of Roast Fig previously and I now realise that I have been missing out big time. They were amazing, the goat’s cheese was just fabulous and the pine nuts added that extra dimension to the texture, bringing it together like a well-orchestrated musical for your taste buds. Andy said his Braised Beef & Horseradish Cigars were magnificent, the rolls of succulent meat, seasoned to perfection went brilliantly with the capers and tasty tarragon mayonnaise, and were polished off in no time!

For the main courses we chose from the A La Carte menu; South Coast Plaice with Steamed Potatoes and a Crab Cesar Salad and for Andy the Braised Shank of Lamb with Red Lentil Stew and Ravigote Sauce. (Mains ranged from £12.95-£19.95). Even though it was opening night and it was getting pretty busy, we didn’t have to wait long for this to arrive, the staff seemed to have this nailed and even though they may have been paddling hard beneath the surface, it didn’t show.

My Plaice was sublime, the crab salad and potatoes all exceeded expectations; the seasoning again was spot on. Andy went to cut into the Lamb Shank and it just fell off the bone, it was delectably juicy but the real surprise was in the red lentil stew, which Andy insisted I sample, the flavours were simply fabulous.

We were offered the dessert menu, which is something I always look forward to but after the first two courses my excitement was heightened even further than usual! I opted for White & Dark Chocolate Mousse with Cool Spearmint Custard and for Andy, Lemon Verbenia Panacotta with Fennel Biscotti (desserts ranged from £5.95-£7.95). These were the proverbial cherry on top of an evening of culinary brilliance, the chocolate mousse was literally the best dessert I have ever tasted, and I have tasted a lot; the subtle mint and glorious chocolate mousse were something everyone should try themselves, to comprehend just how good it is. Andy was in a dessert heaven of his own with his Lemon Panacotta, it was exquisite.

There is no doubt that the huge amount of hard work and dedication that the team have ploughed into The Ugly Duckling has paid off, resulting in an opening night of the very highest standard. The décor and ambience is great, the food is of the highest quality, using local produce, there is an array of wines to choose from as well as beers, lagers, spirits and soft drink and the service is excellent. The Ugly Duckling has hatched and a majestic swan has emerged, wings spread, ready to fly high.

e Edgmond Lion...

After hearing that the Edgmond Lion had come under new ownership, my colleague Becky and I made the short journey from Telford on a lovely summer evening.

As we entered the traditional lounge area we were both welcomed in, ordered a couple of drinks from the very well stocked bar and were shown to our tables in the separate dining area. We were both pleased to find that there was a varied and wide choice of mostly seasonal dishes on the menu.

We chose our starters and they arrived after a very short wait. Becky opted for soup of the day which was courgette and rocket on this occasion, and was served piping hot with a nice chunk of homemade, wholemeal bread. She commented on how tasty it was and also how filling it was too. I chose charred asparagus that was served with shavings of parmesan cheese, lemon and dill and topped with a free range egg. The fresh, tangy flavours complimented each other really well and certainly set a very high standard for the next course.

Becky chose a main course of braised pork belly, fondant potatoes, spring veg and a cider sauce. Becky said how succulent the belly pork was and that the crackling that topped it was possibly the best crackling that she has ever tasted. It looked so good that I just couldn’t resist having a bite for myself and I can verify that she was absolutely right about the crackling. I decided to try beetroot gnocchi with goat’s cheese, crispy sage and rocket. This dish was quite simply divine. I was torn between this and another dish on the menu but I’m so glad that I chose the gnocchi as the chef executed it to absolute perfection!

Even though we were rather full from the plentiful portions that we had just enjoyed, we had to have a dessert each and I’m so glad that we did. Becky decided to try the chocolate torte that was served with an orange sorbet. Becky was in chocolate paradise and said that the orange sorbet packed a real punch of fresh flavours! I opted for the chocolate and cherry cheesecake. It was the perfect end to an excellent dining experience; flavoursome, homemade dishes made to an extremely high standard with service to match.

As it was such a lovely evening we decided to sit in the beer garden to finish our drinks and the countryside views were stunning and really added to the occasion.

The Edgmond Lion is a warm and inviting pub where everyone is welcome, serving a wide range of real ales, refreshing beers, ciders and wines, with something to suit everyone's taste. The food menu offers traditional and freshly prepared dishes, serving real treats from homemade pie, fish and chips and not forgetting the very popular Sunday Roast served with all the trimmings. They have even introduced a barista style coffee machine, the perfect excuse to pop in and enjoy a slice of cake!

• A World Premiere of ‘Wherever You Are’, a short film made in Shrewsbury, by two leading short film directors, Gabriel Virata and Joan Montesinos, who have collaborated after meeting at last year’s Festival.

• Joe Stevens, a folk-roots American singer/songwriter from the USA, will speak after ‘Real Boy’, the real-life story of Ben, a transgender young man. Joe appears in the film as Ben’s mentor and friend.

• Rosalind Pearson, the Director of ‘Women Like Us’ (1998) & ‘Women Like That’ (1991). First screened as part of Channel 4’s groundbreaking TV series ‘Out on Tuesday’, these documentaries explore the lives of older lesbians in the UK from R different cultures, classes and backgrounds from the 1920s to 1989. Their stories incorporate ideas about lesbianism, the

Do they find it hard to remember and carry out two or more instructions at a time? Is it difficult for them to concentrate on writing or reading without being distracted by what’s going on around them?

And are these challenges starting to have an impact on your child’s confidence and on their progress at school? If they are, have you wondered whether you child may be experiencing specific language and learning difficulties?

The speed of children’s learning and development may vary, but if your child experiences any of these challenges and they are persisting then it would be worthwhile investigating further. It may be that they have a dyslexic profile or there may be other reasons.

A child with a dyslexic profile is just as bright and capable as their peers – sometimes brighter! Often they are highly imaginative and creative, and they may have exceptional technical skills. They can be quick ‘thinkers’ and ‘doers’.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia can be described as a specific difference in the way that some individuals learn and process information. This can present difficulties in one or more of the following areas: • Spelling and written language • Reading • Motor skills • Short-term memory • Sequencing • Auditory or visual memory According to the British Dyslexia Association, 10 per cent of the population experience dyslexia to a greater or lesser extent. While children and adults with dyslexia share features in common, each individual’s profile is unique.

Dyslexia as an advantage

The same dyslexic features that create academic challenges bring exceptional talents, which should be recognised and nurtured.

Entrepreneurs are five times more likely to experience dyslexia and many architects, engineers, surgeons, sportspeople, actors, explorers and craftspeople have a dyslexic style.

There are clear advantages to early recognition of a dyslexic profile. This means that your child can start to learn and practise essential literacy skills using approaches that recognise their own individual strengths and style.

Recognition gives children an earlier opportunity to learn simple techniques for managing concentration and stress anxiety, allowing their confidence, learning and potential to develop.

Does my child need an assessment for dyslexia?

An assessment is useful but not essential in every case. It can help to identify the way in which your child processes information as well as their strengths and weaknesses in literacy learning. Tutoring can be more carefully tailored to your child’s individual needs and style.

Students and staff are celebrating A level results at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College, with 47% A*-B grades and over 74% A*-C grades and an overall pass rate of 98.5%.

For the first time in the college’s history over 750 students were sitting Advanced level examinations this year including 2070 entries in 44 different A level subjects making the college the biggest A level centre in the county.

Commenting on the achievements in his final year at the college Principal Martin Ward, said ‘A level results are so important for students in terms of their progression to university or employment. The pass rate is an impressive 98.5% with significantly high proportions of higher grades with A*-B grades at 47% and A*-C grades at 74.2%. Results at A level show a pleasing improvement on last year. Achieving such an improvement, whilst providing a range of choice to a large number of students is a credit to the college.’

Underlying the headline rate there are many individual success stories. 5 students who were offered places at Oxford or Cambridge this year have achieved the grades required. 4 students who were offered places to study Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary courses have been successful in achieving the required grades. Approximately 70% of the students will go straight to university in a wide range of courses.

For the third year the college has entered students for advanced BTEC courses. At Subsidiary Diploma level 91 entries were made in BTEC Applied Science, Business, ICT and Sport and there was a pass rate of 100% and a fantastic 76% of all entries were at Distinction level. These qualifications have a high academic content and also prepare students for the world of employment.

It’s not just results day that has added excitement to this summer as the merger with Shrewsbury College to create the Shrewsbury Colleges Group has now taken place. This merger allows the two colleges to focus wholly on what they do best: offer an exceptionally high performing Advanced Level centre for

academically motivated students at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and a leading vocational centre of excellence at Shrewsbury College. It will also allow increased focus on the development of much needed Apprenticeships.

Chair of Governors, Alison Jackson comments. 'Rather than coexisting - and in some areas competing - we are now able to positively work together, ensuring we deliver a broader, stronger and more co-ordinated offering to our students, local employers and the community. '

The new Head of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College Paul Morgan adds 'the exciting and newly merged Shrewsbury Colleges Group will give students even greater flexibility with their programme and access to dedicated subject resources at different campus locations. We are proud to offer the largest and most flexible curriculum offer within Shropshire, comprising A Levels and vocational diplomas, with Apprenticeships and Higher Education qualifications as progression routes. Students still apply to each college and will 'belong' to each college community, as each college will retain their individual identities and characteristics.'

One Principal/CEO will be appointed to oversee the merged group and in the meantime the post has been taken by Lyn Surgeon, who is an experienced Principal and Chief Executive previously of the ‘outstanding’ Nelson and Colne College and South Downs College. Prior to this Lyn was Deputy Principal of Pendleton College, an ‘outstanding’ Sixth Form College which was part of the merger of the three colleges which formed Salford City College in 2009.

Classic

lasagne Warm & Hearty

Ingredients

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 250g beef mince • 1 onion, diced • 3 carrots, grated • 75g butter • 75g plain flour

Method

• 1 tsp English mustard • 750ml milk • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 x 400g tin tomatoes • 250g lasagne sheets • salt and pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6 2. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.

Add the mince along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Brown the mince for 5-6 minutes until coloured all over and beginning to crisp, then remove from the pan and put to one side.

3. Cook the onion and carrot in the frying pan, gently for 10 minutes, or until everything is softened.

4. Melt the butter in a saucepan over a medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and mustard and mix well. Cook on a medium heat until the mixture forms a paste.

5. Add the milk in batches into the saucepan, whisking as you go to create a smooth white sauce. Once all the milk is added, pop in a pinch of salt and black pepper, turn the heat down and simmer gently for 6-7 minutes.

6. Once the onions and carrots are softened, add the garlic to the frying pan and cook for 2 minutes, then add the meat and any juices, to the pan and the tomatoes. Mix everything together, cover and simmer for 10 minutes until thickened slightly.

7. To make the lasagne, place a quarter of the tomato sauce into the bottom of a small/medium baking dish. Top with a layer of lasagne sheets. Spoon over another quarter of the tomato sauce and top with a third of the white sauce. Repeat twice more, finishing at the top with the last layer of white sauce.

8. Place into the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until bubbling and the top is golden-brown. Serve the lasagne in slices while hot.

Layered pumpkin and cranberry dessert with cream

Ingredients

• 1 can Pumpkin Puree or make your own from a fresh pumpkin • 1 tsp Pumpkin Pie Seasoning • 60g Light Cream Cheese • 60g Cranberry Relish • 1 Tbsp Chopped Pecans, divided • 45g0 Fresh Cranberries • Whipped Cream

Method

1. In a bowl, mix the pumpkin puree, seasoning and cream cheese.

2. Transfer the mixture into a piping bag or sandwich bag with corner snipped, if a piping bag is not available. In a shot glass or any small glass layer pumpkin mix, cranberry relish and whipped cream. Then top with whipped cream, chopped pecans and fresh cranberries.

Roasted Potato Wedges

Ingredients

• 4 or 5 large baking potatoes, sliced into wedges • 4 or 5 tablespoons olive oil • Salt and black pepper, 2-3 tablespoons of paprika • Handful of fresh chopped parsley

Method

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6. Drizzle some of the oil into a deep baking tray and place in oven to heat up.

2. Remove the tray from the oven and lay the wedges in the oil. Drizzle with the remaining oil. Season with salt & pepper and sprinkle with paprika and some of the parsley; carefully toss the wedges into the hot baking tray.

3. Bake in the preheated oven until the potato is cooked through and crisp, about 30 to 40 minutes. Allow to cool slightly, then toss with remaining parsley.

1. Oktoberfest 2016

Lager, lederhosen, pretzels and frankfurters galore!

Last years event saw a million visitors in the first weekend alone, with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. This years Oktoberfest opens its gates from Septmeber 17th to October 3rd 2016. With the 3rd October being a national holiday, the Oktoberfest 2016 is seventeen, instead of the usual 16 days, long.

2. Old Town - Marienplatz

Marienplatz is the heart of the city of Munich. In the Middle Ages, the square used to be a market place as well as the site where tournaments and festivities took place. The square is dominated by the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus).

3. Siegestor Gate

The gate was originally dedicated to the glory of the Bavarian army. Today, the Siegestor is a monument and reminder to peace. After sustaining heavy damage in World War II it was set to be demolished in 1945 however, the gate was reconstructed and restored partially. The new inscription on the back side by Wilhelm Hausenstein reads Dem Sieg geweiht, vom Krieg zerstört, zum Frieden mahnend, "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, urging peace".

4. Neuschwanstein Castle

The setting of Neuschwanstein could not be more idyllic. Neuschwanstein was opened to the public 7 weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886. The shy king built the castle in order to withdraw from public life. Vast numbers of people now come to view his private refuge. Today Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe.

Every year 1.4 million people visit "the castle of the fairy-tale king". In the summer around 6,000 visitors a day stream through rooms that were intended for a single inhabitant.

Celebrating Wellington Festival!

We are delighted to launch the 2016 Wellington Festival – a spectacular three week celebration of arts and culture. The Festival takes place in the vibrant market town of Wellington and aims to showcase artists of local, national and international renown. After the great success of last year’s Festival, we have been working throughout the winter to put together an amazing programme of events and activities, for the whole family.

In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, the Festival promises a fantastic line up of comedy, photography, dance, culture and all aspects of literature including travel writing workshops, poetry and performance writing. We hope that you are inspired to have a go at some of the workshops on offer: try something new, visit more places on your doorstep, bring family and friends and encourage tourists and visitors to discover all that Wellington has to offer.

Opening the Festival will be the Olympian (and national treasure) – Eddie “the eagle” Edwards - who will be talking about his escapades as he became the

first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping in 1988. This year, his story was told in the biographical film Eddie the Eagle, starring Hugh Jackman, which showed his perseverance and achievements all without funding.

The following day will see a Comedy Club night with the award winning, and nationally acclaimed, comedian Hannah Sylvester, Josh Pugh, English Comedian of the year 2016 and four further acts who have been delighting audiences across the country with their observational insight and cutting satire; this will be an evening to savour. Another major highlight of this year’s programme is our guest Tom Watt who was the Ghost Writer for David Beckham’s biography. He is also an actor, broadcaster and film maker and he returns to the Festival following a successful appearance in 2015.

Tips to stay healthy in autumn...

The transition from summer to fall can be a challenge. To help ease the change, we have put together some Autumn Health Tips to get you ready for the colder months and keep your mental and physical health in check.

• Start taking a Vitamin D supplement. We get most of our Vitamin D from the sun, so our intake decreases since we spend most of our time inside during the fall/winter seasons. If you find you are not getting outside much, a Vitamin D supplement can boost your mood and immune system!

• Get your flu shot and yearly check-up. Self explanatory!

No one likes sniffling, aching, sneezing and coughing getting in the way of life.

• Boost your immune system. You can do this by drinking plenty of water, washing your hands often to prevent spreading illness, and eating plenty of nutritious foods.

• Get yourself ready for Daylight Savings Time. Go to bed earlier when you can, especially the week before the clocks change. Longer periods of darkness = longer periods of sleep!

• Moisturize your skin. Harsh temperatures can make your skin dry which leads to more wrinkles, irritated skin and aggravated acne. Not a good look!

• Buy in-season food. Beets, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, kale, pumpkin, broths, roasted squash, roots and dark leafy greens are all great choices.

“It's a free online tool that's pre-loaded with information about our warranty cover and after-sales service, as well as lots of useful guidance about moving into a new home, including contact details, floor plans and manuals for appliances,” she explained.

“We can enhance HUG by adding information about specific developments and individual plots and customers can upload information to it, such as guarantees for equipment.

“Regular reminders can be programmed into the system so that it sends out periodic reminders for things like servicing the boiler or watering-in new turf and buyers can also input their own key dates such as when their building and contents policies are up for renewal.”

Vicky Fletcher said that they had found the whole experience of buying from Galliers to be extremely smooth.

“We chose Barnfields as we liked the village setting and the surrounding countryside but also the fact that we are near to a market town.

“The Galliers team was fantastic – very helpful – and as soon as we reserved the house we signed up for our on-line HUG and started using it to plan our move and it meant that we were kept fully up to date with everything and made the whole process very straightforward.
