Whatever your plans for the next 12 months, maybe you want to be healthier, slimmer, fitter, kinder, or just happier - I hope you succeed, and I wish you the very best for 2022!”

T

he new year is a great time for making a new start. Maybe you want to start a new fitness regime or go on a diet - or join the gym? It could be that you are looking at making bigger changes, like moving home or starting a new job or even starting your own business. You may just want to re-focus your attention on what you already do, and look at it with a fresh set of eyes. I think personally I am just happy to be doing what I love, and that I have my wonderful family around me, and hoping that I can get a holiday this year! There are lots of things to look forward to this year like the Queen’s 70th Jubilee celebrations, which will hopefully see the whole nation celebrating with street parties and events up and down the country. The Commonwealth Games

Lighting Up Wellington

Christmas preparations in Wellington couldn’t have gone better, with the successful return of the light switch on event in November which attracted hundreds of people to a lantern making workshop, Santa’s grotto and parade led by the Wellington Brass Band as well as BBC Radio Shropshire’s Paul Shuttleworth broadcasting from the Market Square on the day. The event, which was organised by Wellington Town Council, saw the lights switched on by the Mayor of Wellington Cllr Paul Davis.

Special Award for Remembrance...

The Mayor of Wellington, Cllr Paul Davis, presented a special plaque to Parade Marshal Eddie Fanneran for his long term outstanding contribution to Wellington. Pictured with Deputy Lieutenant of Shropshire Sir Edward Tate Bt DL are Cllr Paul Davis Mayor of Wellington, Police Capt Teresa Spanton and Sqn Ldr Garf Parker as Eddie receives his award.

The event was complimented by another well attended late night opening event in Wellington Market which saw traders dressed up on a Christmas theme and many of the stalls and shops throughout the town staying open.

Elms donated to nature reserve

Wellington resident Colin Evans, whose walks around a nature reserve proved a ‘lifesaver’ during the pandemic, donated four mature trees during National Tree Week to enhance the area even further. Colin Evans said he was very happy to be ‘giving something back’ to the Dothill Local Nature Reserve which has become a haven for wildlife. The elms are an iconic tree that the UK almost lost - and these specimens are resistant to Dutch elm disease. “With the horrendous 20 months we have endured it is nice to see the reintroduction of the species into the nature reserve as a memorial to all those who are no longer with us,” said Colin. Jerry Williams, chair of the Friends of Dothill Local Nature Reserve, said it had become a place of respite particularly during the pandemic and they were very grateful for the donation. The group consulted with Telford and Wrekin Council’s specialists to determine the best place for the trees, which have been named as ‘Colin’s elms’ and have been planted along the path east of Dothill School and will in time form a beautiful avenue of specimen trees, enhancing the biodiversity of the area. The Friends of Dothill meet every Tuesday to carry out voluntary work in the area are always keen to welcome volunteers. Please contact membership secretary Fiona Dean on 07966 283911.

Wellington Market

in running for top award...

Wellington Market has been nominated for a place in the Great British Market Awards 2021 – a national competition organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities – and as this Magazine goes to print voting is taking place by the residents and visitors who value Wellington Market and the strides it has made over the last year or so to improve the offer and bring it bang up to date. Initiatives have included a complete re-wiring of the market, investment in and creation of the highly popular food court and of course, the late night openings which see an emergence of Wellington as a ‘foodie destination’ as visitors flock to the many ‘street food’ stalls whilst enjoying live music and entertainment. Telford & Wrekin have played their part with grants for new businesses as part of the ‘Pride in Our High Streets’ initiative and overall Wellington Market has a real buzz about it and is attracting more and more visitors.

Next year in Wellington will be just as busy with many great events planned…

Wellington Festival

will take place from 6th to 8th May.

Wellington in Bloom

a gardening competition that will take place in June.

Sounds in the Square

will be held throughout the summer – and of course the Platinum Jubilee celebrations plans are in the pipeline for Saturday 4th June.

‘Wellington Open Gardens’

New First Homes Scheme set to help people onto the

. r e d d a l y t r Prope

The council already have an excellent record of delivering affordable housing in the borough with around a third of all homes available for affordable rent, social rent or shared ownership. Government will now require Local authorities to set aside a quarter of the affordable homes that they would secure though planning obligations and make these available as First Homes. This is anticipated to lead to a fall in the number of more affordable shared ownership homes coming forward as they are displaced by First Homes.

First time buyers in Telford and Wrekin are set to benefit from discounted house prices on new build properties.

Councillor Richard Overton, Cabinet Member for Enforcement, Community Safety and Customer Services commented: “We understand the challenges involved when it comes to buying your first home with one of the biggest obstacles being saving for the initial deposit. By increasing the First Homes scheme discount to 40% here in the borough we are making our housing as affordable as possible for residents most in need. This includes single income households and key workers including police, teachers, and nurses to ensure they have a fair chance at buying their own home.”

Nationally, the Government’s new First Homes scheme will see a minimum price discount of 30%, for first time buyers eligible properties. But in a move to make homes as affordable as possible at today’s cabinet meeting the decision was made to increase the discount on these properties to 40% of their market value. This aims to make first time buying for new build homes more affordable to residents and key workers in the borough. The Council is also ensuring that properties go to local people by setting a number of local connection criteria.

New park bins help drive

recycling rates in Telford and Wrekin...

Following a successful trial in Telford Town Park, Telford & Wrekin Council is now installing 10 more recycling bins into district parks across the borough.

Recycle it!

The eye-catching recycling bins are part of a campaign run by the council in partnership with environmental charity, Hubbub. The campaign aims to make on-the-go recycling as easy as possible, to save plastic bottles, glass and cans from going to waste. It focuses on outdoor spaces, with residents encouraged to recycle in the borough's parks. Cllr Lee Carter, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood, Commercial and Regeneration, said: “Our residents have really embraced recycling at home – we saw 47% of household waste being recycled in the borough in 2019/20, up 2.2% on the previous year. “Building on that success, we’re keen to drive recycling rates in other areas of daily life, including when people are on the go, out and about visiting our parks. “Back in October, we installed 25 of the new bins in Telford Town Park and immediately saw an uplift in the volume of waste being diverted to recycling, with early figures showing the amount of plastic bottles, glass and cans collected increased by 123%. “Following that successful launch, we’re excited to roll out phase two now, installing these bins across Telford and Wrekin, beginning with our district parks.” Cllr Gilly Reynolds, Oakengates, said:

“We’re here in Hartshill Park today – one of our borough’s wonderful ‘green flag’ parks – where we have recently installed two of the new recycling bins. Bins have also been installed in Dawley Park and Bowring Park. “We would like to thank everyone who recycles responsibly at home. With these new bins appearing across the borough, we hope people will find it easier to recycle when they’re out and about too.” Cllr Carolyn Healy, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Green Spaces, Natural and Historic Environment, said: “I’m delighted at the results of our initial audit from the trial in Telford Town Park, which suggests these bins are going to make a significant difference to the amount of waste we’re able to divert to recycling in Telford and Wrekin. “As a council, we are focused on integrating sustainability across our services. We have committed to taking a leading role on climate change, and every initiative like this takes us one step closer to achieving our goal of carbon neutrality.” For more information visit telfordandwrekin-intheloop.co.uk

Residents back new pool plans following consultation...

eL isure News!

Councillor Eileen Callear, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Visitor Economy commented: “The feedback we have received shows that there is strong support for a new pool with 95% of people taking part in the consultation saying that they, or their family would like to swim more often and 84% of people strongly agreeing that a new pool would benefit the local community. “Interestingly, 89% of those who took part also said that they travel by car to the pool they currently visit. A new pool could change that, giving more people the opportunity to travel on foot or on a bike – which is better for their health and better for the environment too.”

Results from the first round of public consultation on plans to build a new swimming pool in the Dawley area have been published.

The investment from Telford & Wrekin Council for a new pool facility is in addition to the wider investment of £1million into leisure and activities announced in early October to support the borough to recover from the COVID pandemic. With residents being supportive of plans to build a new pool in principle, work will now begin on a detailed feasibility study.

The first step of the consultation, which looked to gauge the appetite of residents for a new facility in the area, has been completed with over 1,100 residents sharing their views, the full report can be viewed here: https://www.telford.gov.uk/info/20240/consult ations/327/current_consultations/3 Local residents were invited to submit their views in a survey between 1 October – 8 November 2021 either online or by filling out a form. Responses were received from all 30 wards in the borough.

New Year - New gym gear... It is well known that January is the time of year when gym memberships soar, and of course you want to look good, and feel comfortable when working out. January is the time for new beginnings, or setting goals for the year ahead. With the pandemic still lingering in the air, like the unwelcomed smell of sweaty trainers - it’s been hard to plan anything. Top Tips From Frenchic The Proper Way To...

m o o R a t n i Pa Any professional will tell you that it's essential to have a well-considered plan of action when renovating a room. Thankfully, painting in the correct order makes the whole process easier by eliminating messy mistakes, and giving you the best chance of a perfect result. What Is The Correct Order To Paint A Room?

As a rule, you should start at the top and work your way down when painting a room, meaning walls come before skirting boards. This clever top-down approach stops drip marks and overspray from ruining newly painted surfaces below.

Frenchic suggests painting in the following order: 1. Ceilings

You should always start with ceilings because rollers often splatter excess paint onto surrounding walls. First, liberally lay down dust sheets before cutting in the edges using a suitable sized brush – around 50mm, flat or oval. Then, roll paint in square sections across the ceiling for even coverage. 2. Walls

Once the ceiling is dry, walls can be cut and rolled with your chosen colour (you only need one or two coats when using high-quality Frenchic chalk wall paint). You don't need to stress about small amounts of paint getting on surrounding woodwork link door frames or skirting boards. But any large blobs are best wiped away. 3. Skirting Boards And Frames

Make sure walls are dry before using low-tack masking tape to cover the immediate area above and around the skirting and frames. This will help you achieve a sharp border when painting. It's crucial to choose the right paint for the best result (more on this next). 4. Doors

Lastly, complete the look by painting doors. Brushes are the best tool for panelled doors but you might prefer a small roller for flat doors

Home Trends

How Do You Prepare Skirting Boards For Painting?

First and foremost, you should prepare the whole room at one time, from the ceiling down, before painting anywhere. When using beginner-friendly Frenchic skirting board paint for your skirting boards, surface prep is simple and no primer is required: Use the Frenchic sugar soap solution and sponge to clean your skirting boards. Sand the woodwork, whether painted or not. Fill holes with a high-quality filler. What's The Best Way To Paint Skirting Boards?

You should only paint skirting boards when all preparation has been completed. Once your masking tape is in place, start with the top edge of the skirting board. Paint along the line of the boards, horizontally from the top edge to the base, working in small sections for a seamless finish. Use The Right Tools

A decorator is only as good as their tools, which is why you need expertly crafted brushes to hand.Oval brushes are ideal, especially if you are not a regular painter, as they are specially designed for chalk paint pick-up. Apply Less Paint

Remember, skirting boards are a small area, so you don't need bucket loads of colour for full coverage. When applying paint to your brush, dip the first third of the bristles and tap off any excess. This prevents drips from gathering along the

bottom of the skirting as you paint. Wipe Away Drips

Of course, using less paint means fewer drips. However, you should frequently check as you go to avoid unsightly bumps. If you notice paint congealing, simply use a brush or cloth to smooth the area.

Frenchic paint is available from £6.95 at: www.frenchicpaint.co.uk

Toilet Training Puppy_Full Page Bleed New 03/12/2021 10:41 Page 1

Top Tips...

FOR TOILET TRAINING

Your Puppy.

A puppy is always a welcome addition to the family, but there is a lot to learn for both you and your puppy. One of things people find difficult when introducing a puppy to their home is toilet training. It can be hard and frustrating. But it is important to ensure you are patient and kind when training, as this will result in your puppy feeling confident about how to ‘go’...

Toilet training, like most other forms of training, is best done by rewarding good behaviours and ignoring bad behaviours. You are also in training, so learn to look out for the signs that your puppy needs to go which could include sniffing around, circling or lifting their tail. Start by taking them out every half an hour, as their bladders are tiny - and also after they eat or sleep. If they go to the toilet whilst they are outside, reward them and give them lots of praise.

Remember puppies are babies; they have tiny bladders and cannot simply hold it in until you are ready. Up to about 10 weeks old, puppies will struggle to go even an hour between wees. Then as they get slightly older they tend to be able to do about an hour for each month (so a three month old puppy may be able to go for 3 hours etc...) and once they hit six months, they should be at their full capacity. Use Puppy Pads...

Use puppy pads at first, to give them somewhere to go rather than the floor. These are scented, so they encourage the puppy to go to the loo on them, so put them in the rooms your puppy is spending time in. Don’t React Badly...

If they get it wrong - don’t tell them off, or be angry. Just clean it up and keep calm. If you tell them off you are likely to scare them and they may hide from you to do it next time - under the bed or behind the couch. Use Enzymatic Cleaners...

When cleaning up an accident, use tissue paper to soak up the wee, and use a special cleaner with enzymes which will remove any odour. If you don’t, the puppy (or any other dogs in the house) may return to the same spot and repeat the mistake. You could use a puppy pad to mop up the wee and then place it down for the pup to smell next time they are looking to go. Take a Poo Bag on EVERY Walk...

When taking your puppy out on a walk, make sure you have poo bags with you, as no matter the size your dog, you can get an on-the-spot fine for letting them poo and you not picking it up. Lot’s of council’s have different rules - so check what your local council has in place. Many Town and Parish Council’s offer free dog poo bags, which you can pick up from their offices, or community centres. Remember, it is important be patient, reward good behaviour and ignore bad. Your puppy will soon be doing the business outside

Take on

r e d r o s i D e v i t c e Seasonal Aff This Winter...

Dr Juliet Anton, Chartered Psychologist and founder of new self-help app, AskDoc, offers insights and techniques to help manage Seasonal Affective Disorder Winter inevitably means that dark, gloomy nights are upon us. With early nights limiting the amount of sunlight we get; this could have a negative impact on our mood – potentially leading to a mental health problem such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a type of depression that is most commonly known as the ‘Winter Blues’. Symptoms of SAD include symptoms of depression (i.e., persistent low mood, a lack of interest in daily activities and feelings of despair, guilt, and worthlessness), however, it is specifically caused by the cold season, where we experience reduced sunlight and engage in limited activities in order to get through the winter months. Dr Juliet Anton, Chartered Psychologist and founder of new self-help app, AskDoc, shares her insights on how to understand S.A.D and manage the symptoms.

1. Take in the sunlight.

Whilst sunny weather is a rare sight across the UK in winter, it is still important to head outdoors and take in the fresh air. Winter weather means that people are less inclined to do any activity let alone go out for a walk but, getting enough vitamin D is important in helping you lift your mood. If the weather is dark, rain is downpouring and you can’t bring yourself to head outdoors - – sit near a window whilst working, get it done and out the way earlier on in the day and get it out the way, or go with a friend or family member which might make the activity that bit more fun!

2. Engage in regular exercise. Encouraging hormones such as dopamine and endorphins are a fantastic way to lift your mood, especially in the winter. A workout at the gym or yoga class at your local leisure centre are things you can incorporate into your week to ensure that you get your body moving. If cardio isn’t your thing, try a relaxing yoga class or pick up some weights to ease yourself in. Travelling to and from your gym or leisure centre will expose you to the necessary sunlight – even if it’s a lunchtime stroll to your local starbuck for a coffee or meal. Getting your blood pumping is an incredibly effective way to ease a low mood and will leave you feeling more positive as you tackle the remaining day.

3. Eat the rainbow.

When sunshine is in short supply, infusing your diet with some healthy choices is a great way to give your mood a boost. Citrus fruits can help us to feel refreshed while green vegetables give us an influx of iron and energy – perfect for when you feel lethargic. Whilst you may struggle to feel motivated to cook after a long day at work, cooking is a great distraction and a way to destress, so have fun creating new recipes and treat cooking dinner as a form of self-care. Don’t forget the Vitamin D that we would otherwise get from sunlight – be it foods or supplements, make sure to include Vitamin D in your diet during winter months.

4. Use cognitive behavioural therapy.

Free specialist courses... The AskDoc app is available to download for free through the Apple Store (for iPhone) and Google Play (for Android), with access to free specialist courses from an expert psychologist. Users can also benefit from an optional £5 subscription to the Depression Forum once the course has been completed. For more information, please visit www.askdoc.com

It’s not uncommon for people to keep calm and carry on, often ignoring our mental health problems and leaving them to stack up. That said, it is important to get help when you need it and when you feel most comfortable. Much like the rest of our body, when our brain is in pain, its helpful to get some help from a mental health professional such as a psychologist. The AskDoc app aims to normalise seeking help even when you haven’t considered it in the past and would like to talk to psychologist but don’t feel ready. The depression course on this app uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help you on your journey. CBT encourages you to understand your difficulties in terms of thoughts, emotions and behaviours; and it gives you skills and techniques to help you manage your difficulties in your own way.

5. Try a light box.

Bright light therapy is considered a very effective for battling S.A.D. Sitting in front of a light box for around 20 to 30 minutes a day can help encourage a chemical change in your brain that boosts your mood which in turn, addresses symptoms of SAD. Safe to use and widely available, a bit of light therapy may help you feel braver and brighter on your chilly winter commute to work. And there you have it, five tips and techniques to help you tackle Seasonal Affective Disorder and improve your mood over the winter period. Remember it is never okay to suffer alone and getting help is crucial to help support your mental health and wellbeing.

Alexander The Great - or some such all-powerful titan - allegedly wept when told there were no more worlds to conquer. I know how he felt. I've just scaled the summit and tested probably the best car in it's class. In the great pantheon of motoring marvels one car now supersedes the competition in its radiant affirmation of sublime achievement. There are no more peaks to conquer, no more rivers to cross, no more Topless Towers in Troy to burn. The new Audi Q5 Sportback puts paid to aspiration. Own one of these and you know you have chosen the best. In my opinion, offerings from the likes of Peugeot, Citroen, Jeep and Vauxhall are mere shadows when compared to one of these. "Cor blimey guv'nor!" exclaimed the gentleman manning the gate at the Six Counties Show as he directed me to the car park. "I'd give a cartload of jellied eels for one of those." I laughed, tickled by his colourful patter and followed his directions across rough terrain and wet grass where other vehicles were struggling for traction. The 4wd with several drive modes made light work of the challenging surfaces. Everywhere eyes were glued to the Q5: eyes tinged, one fancies, with covetousness - for who wouldn't want to swap places with yours truly. I parked, shut off the 265PS 4 cylinder petrol engine and.....well, simply exhaled a long sigh of contentment. Had I succumbed to the sheer comfort of the all-embracing luxury of the irresistible interior I might have nodded off. It occured to me that only in dreams could one hope to surpass the Q5 Sportback experience. It had all kicked off early that morning at my Manor House. I'd just despatched the neighbourhood cockerell with a well-aimed week-old croissant when my manservant burst into the breakfast room.

Audi Q5 Sportback "The car's arrived." "Car?" I replied. "Car indeed Squire. In my opinion once you clap eyes on it's significant form you'll leave your fried bacon in the pan and take to the highway with adventure in your soul." "You don't say. This car I must see." And see I did. Picture if you will a dashingly styled SUV. Not a trace of vulgarity, no hint of crowd pleasing abrogation of taste - just the best design engineering wrapped in a sleek-skinned modern motor. Audi have taken the SUV concept a step further and added zest to the best, creating an SUV coupe for those who like their mustard sharp. It is sportier and more thrilling than the standard Q5 best seller, appealing to those adventurous in spirit. Remarkably the transformation is achieved at very little practical cost. Drivers of the

£55,235 Q5 Sportback hardly lose any luggage space. The coupes rear end is as accommodating as mine host at the Wheatsheaf. It serves you with a smile and an open palm. I checked the boot first to make sure I could carry all the rubbish to the tip - no problem there - dashed back inside to grab a few things and I was ready to go. But where to? "You could try The Six Counties Show" suggested my lackey.

humble brains like mine simply pay obeisance. There's a drivetrain mode for every eventuality and driving along in on-road mode the Sportback simply defies expectations. One gets blown away by the irresistible magnificence of combined performance and sophistication. Does it go like the wind? Well, when was the last time you saw the wind weep? Does it hold the road?

"Good call. Want to come with me?" "No. I've got to polish the brasses." So I took to the road like the free spirit that I am. What a drive! The Sportback comes fully loaded with all the best a modern car can provide. There's the Quattro all wheel drive system of course and the 7 speed S Tronic dual clutch auto box. You'd expect nothing less. And there's so much value-added technology that

By Syd Taylor Motoring Reviewer Are you kidding? It holds the road to ransom. It's Dick Turpin and Black Bess together. It stands, delivers and gallops away up to near 150mph yet I averaged between 37mpg and 40 mpg. And it's incomparably more comfortable than any saddle or stagecoach. Grab the Sportback by the reins and you won't want to let go: it's so addictive. So there I was at the Six Counties Show following a long drive and now relaxing in the cosseting seating, reluctant to exchange well sprung upholstery for springy turf. I climbed out and headed for the main arena. It was impossible not to think that I was leaving the main event behind.
