It would be great to say that it’s been a better year than recent ones - and in one way it has. At least we have some freedom, and can spend precious time with our loved ones.

But with crisis in our NHS, strikes for workers to be paid a decent wagewithout having to claim Universal Credit top-ups and the cost-of-living crisis, and spiralling inflation has however hit many people very hard. There are not many people that are not being affected by the cost of fuel, energy and food. In fact, only the very well-off seem to be managing to cope, while most are having to cut back, and some even struggling to eat properly, or pay their bills.

There was an opportunity for most of us to take a break, relax and unwind. I spent most of this so-called break catching up on jobs in the house that hadn’t been done - but they say a change is as good as a rest - though I have to say I am not convinced!

Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is internationally important as its Main Mill is the world’s first iron-framed building (built 17961797) and is the forerunner to the modern-day skyscraper. The site will open from 10 September 2022 for the public to visit and learn more about its incredible role in the Industrial Revolution and the great contribution Shrewsbury and the Midlands have made to the world as manufacturers and innovators.

Following redevelopment under Historic England’s ownership four of the listed buildings – the Smithy, Stables, Main Mill and Kiln - are now fully restored, and the Main Mill and Kiln are opening for the first time as a visitor destination and workspace –where people can come to celebrate and explore the site’s

Wellington Town Council hosted a series of family fun days in the Bowring Park over the 6-week summer holidays. Ranging from PJ the showman, Wrekin Forest School, Climate Hub nature festival, and dance performances from local group Tori Arts. Over 700 parents and children enjoyed the free family fun including the Mayor of Wellington Cllr Dorothy LikewiseRoberts!theMarket Square was full of entertainment over the summer. Saturdays in Wellington saw performances from the Wellington Brass band, The Telfordaires, The Shropshire Boatmen, Three in a Bar Jazz band, and the Telford Steel Band. New for this year was a skateboarding skills demonstration from the Chill Out Skate Shop on Market street.

On Sunday 18 September, Wellington will host a unique 'Italian scooter day'. New Street will be packed with scooters of all types and vintage, with riders coming from as far as Cheshire and Staffordshire. David Morris, Director of the 'Italian Auto Moto Club' said, ''As far as we know, this event is the first time in the UK that a town has hosted an event purely for scooters on its central streets. It’s great to get enthusiasts to come to meet up in a town setting and help to regenerate the local economy”

Wellington Market welcomes three new traders thanks to council funding!

“We wish them every success in Wellington as they aim to attract new customers and encourage people to shop local for their services.”

The Telford & Wrekin Council grants help small businesses to set up pop up stalls in markets or empty retail units across the borough in Wellington, Newport, Oakengates, Madeley, Dawley and Ironbridge.

“We’re delighted that we’ve been able to support three separate businesses with their launch at Wellington Market – helping to ease some of the initial start-up costs that they all face.

Meanwhile, The Little TV Co will offer a range of second hand TVs and other TV accessories for people on low incomes from its new market stall home.

His business venture will support the drive to be more sustainable and encourage people to upcycle and make the best use of used products.

Owner Matt Taverner has been awarded £2,120 to help cover the initial rent of the stall and also to fund stock, signage, fixtures and fittings and business cards and leaflets.

Fabulous Feet, Creative Kate Crafts and The Little TV Co are all aiming to test the waters with their business ventures on the market and have ambitions to become permanent additions in the town.

Councillor Lee Carter (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Regeneration and the High Street, said: “The trial start-up grants give businesses the opportunity to set up physical shops and for many it’s a perfect opportunity to see what running a business on the high street is all about.

7 When ready, prepare the buttercream: add the softened butter to a bowl or freestanding mixer and beat till smooth. Gradually beat in the vanilla essence, almond essence, icing sugar and plant-based milk till fully incorporated then beat for a further 1-2 minutes till ﬂuﬀy. Place in a piping bag with a star-shaped nozzle.

1 Preheat the oven to 160Fan/180*C and line a muﬃn/cupcake tray with 10 cases.

10 Whole Picota cherries

1 tbsp maple syrup

140g caster sugar

170g self-raising flour

1 tbsp lemon juice

120g vegan butter, softened

9 Enjoy straight away or keep in the fridge for 2-3 days. Best eaten at room temperature and you can freeze the unfrosted and unﬁlled cupcakes for 1 month. The compote will keep for 1 week in a sealed container in the fridge.

3 Now sift in the flour, cocoa powder, coffee, and bicarbonate of soda. Whisk to a smooth batter with no specks of flour.

6 Meanwhile, make the ﬁlling: add the Picota Cherries to a saucepan with the rest of the ingredients and bring to a bubble. Allow to bubble away over a high heat for 8 minutes, until sticky and there’s a thick syrup. Pour into a bowl and cool fully (you can place them in the fridge, too).

4 Scoop the batter into the cases, ﬁlling 2/3 full. Bake in the centre of the oven for 18-20 minutes, until risen and springy and an inserted skewer comes out clean.

8 Core the centre of the cupcakes and ﬁll with the Picota cherry compote ﬁlling. Pipe on the buttercream and top each cupcake with some extra compote and the juice, a whole Picota cherry, some chocolate and toasted almonds/coconut.

5. Top with remaining cherries and set aside to firm up in the freezer overnight. Let thaw for 20 mins before slicing and eating.

4. Spoon heaped tablespoons of cashew vanilla and cherry filling on to the base and swirl with a chopstick to combine.

1. Line a loaf tin with parchment paper. Add all base ingredients to a food processor or high-speed blender and blend until it forms a dough. Press evenly into loaf tin and set aside to chill in the fridge.

As we say goodbye to August, we start to realise that Summer is now past its prime, and many of us begin to turn our thoughts to the arrival of Autumn and all the refreshing changes it brings, from crisp, cool air and crunchy leaves in beautiful colours. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons when it comes to fashion. The rich colours, from autumnal reds, oranges and browns, to bold pinks, or dark greens and the rich textures and warm knits and sumptuous leather all combine together wonderfully.

A legacy of the pandemic is comfortable footwear. We have got used to slippers, trainers and sliders and the thought of putting on a pair of heels fills most of us with dread. Eileen Callear (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Visitor Economy, Employment and Skills presented achievers with their certificates at the awards ceremony.

The group have all completed one year Learn Telford Access programmes during the 2021-22 academic year, helping them to land a place at universities up and down the UK. They came together for the graduation ceremony organised by the Learn Telford team at University Centre Telford, Southwater One where they received certificates of achievement.

So far two sets of successful local residents have opened the doors to degrees in nursing, midwifery, special educational needs, pharmacy, education and more with a third cohort being recruited for this academic year.

Access programmes starting in September include education and health professionals courses.

Whilst we may require the same number of seats around the table on an everyday basis, there are often times when friends and family descend and additional places are needed. This is where being able to extend your table comes into its own. In a smaller or narrower space, where the extra width of a round or oval table may be a problem, stick to a rectangular table, it's the most space efficient way of seating a given number of guests".
