THE HYPE REVIEW

Simply First Class... Carriages Cocktail Bar – Classic and Sophisticated...

It was a warm summer Saturday evening, my husband and I decided to venture out into Wellington. We had heard about a fantastic Cocktail Bar – Carriages, and thought it would be really nice to go to find out what all the hype was about. Carriages is Telford’s ONLY Cocktail bar aimed towards a more mature and sophisticated customer. There is a 50 seat cocktail bar and lounge, which operates a full table service, on offer are some of the most gorgeous cocktails, mixed and produced freshly in house by expert mixologists. We were warmly welcomed by the Manager, Rachel, who showed us to our table. The Cocktail Bar is stunning, with a lovely seating plan which is cosy and intimate, there is a lovely bar area and a very impressive glass display cabinet, showcasing some of the finest Champagnes from around the world.

We took a look at the extensive Cocktail menu, which was brimming with options, from the classic Mojito to some more unusual ones, such as ‘The Zombie’.

We were offered some nibbles, fresh plump olives, peanuts and tortilla chips, which were very tasty and got our juices flowing in preparation for the meal that was about to follow.

We were given the menu to browse through while we sat and enjoyed our drinks. There are plenty of options to choose from but my eye was drawn to Pan Fried Chilli Tiger Prawns, which Rachel said were simply stunning, and Stef went for Rosette of Canteloope Melon. We sat and chatted, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. In no time at all Rachel came to show us through to our table.

The cocktails were amazing, my Mojito was sweet, full of zest and the fresh mint finished it off impeccably and Stef’s ‘Singapore Sling’ was a really winner with its cherry and apricot brandy. Whilst we sampled the cocktails, we took in the relaxed, yet buzzing vibe.

For our my main course I had chosen Pan Fried Seabass, set on sautéed baby potatoes with minted pea puree and Stef opted for Oven Roasted Lamb, served on crushed rosemary potatoes, with buttered veg and a red wine sauce and he

I really love ‘Mojito’s’, with fresh lime, brown sugar and fresh mint, so thought I would put one to the test and Stef had spotted a ‘Singapore Sling’ which had dark rum, which looked amazing.

We eagerly followed her through to the dining area, and took our seats. When the Starters arrived, they looked so mouth wateringly tasty, I could barely wait to begin. Stef's melon was almost like a work of art and as we took our first tastes and instantly both made little noises of delight! The prawns were so plump and juicy, oozing with flavour, the avocado with lime fraiche accompanied them perfectly. Stef let me try some of his melon, with a little of the black cherry sorbet, it was divine!

Carriages_Double Page Editorial 17/07/2014 16:54 Page 2

also ordered a glass of red wine to wash it down, which was the perfect excuse for me to have another Mojito! The seabass was absolutely delicious and cooked beautifully, the combination of this with the sautéed potatoes and minted pea puree was a real winner and I enjoyed savouring every mouthful. Stef tucked into his main course and was extremely impressed with the succulent, tender lamb and the crushed rosemary potatoes, which were very tasty and the buttered veg was cooked to perfection! My favourite part of any meal was still to come, dessert, and if the other courses were anything to go by, this would be amazing!

My favourite dessert of all time is crème brule and I was delighted to see ‘Crème Brule with Chocolate & Orange’ on the menu and for Stef it was a no-brainer when he saw ‘Baileys and Butterscotch cheesecake’. The desserts arrived and looked every bit as yummy as they sounded, my crème brule was like no other crème brule I have ever tasted and it came with the most scrumptious freshly cooked shortbread, simply stunning! The cheesecake was equally as scrumptious, with its crumbly base and the creamy

baileys and butterscotch, a marriage made in heaven.

We finished the meal off with a latte, which was definitely the cherry on the top, finishing off the meal perfectly.

Carriages is contemporary, sophisticated and classy. The food is absolutely exquisite and the cocktails are fabulous! Simply First Class…

DIXI CHICKEN 13 Market Square, Wellington Telford, TF1 1BU 01952 252585

Summer Sizzler...

I had been waiting a long time for a quality restaurant/takeaway to open in Wellington, and the wait was finally over. I had heard that Dixi Chicken was opening, and was looking forward to see what all the Hype was about. My first impressions were that I was very impressed with the décor – bright, contemporary and clean cut with American styling throughout. You can see your food being created in front of your eyes, and the staff a very professional and offer ‘service with a smile’.

As it says on the tin, Dixis specialise in quality chicken from fillet burgers and buckets to strips and panninis. They also offer pizzas and kebabs, vegetarian and healthy options as well as desserts. The food here really is of high quality (I should know, I’ve been in many times) and sampled most things on the menu - My personal favourite is the Sizzler Paninni. In the daytime, Dixis is the perfect

option for shoppers and workers who fancy a light (or heavy) meal, at a reasonable price without compromising quality.

They are also open till 3pm (ThursSat) for those on a night out and fancy a quick bite to eat. It has a very family friendly atmosphere also, on my many visits I saw families who were comfortably

seated and kids enjoying their meals. Dixis is in a prime location, conveniently located in the square opposite the Beacon pub next to the HSBC bank. In the evening a delivery service is available too – bonus! You can give them a call or order from the JUST EAT website/app. I would highly recommend that you try Dixis, you won’t be disappointed!

BENGAL SPICE

REFURBISHMENT NEARS COMPLETION AT BENGAL SPICE

A very friendly welcome to a relaxed and comfortable restaurant. Although at time of review still undergoing refurbishment this gem shines through with both locals and people from further afield, travelling to experience a true taste of India. In business for 14 years, Anwar and Ash have enjoyed success in this conveniently situated Dawley High Street venue. On escaping the cold March evening into Bengal Spice, we were greeted with the warmth of both smiles and spices. Instantly feeling at ease and welcome we were shown to one of the few remaining tables.

On viewing the menu we were both spoilt for choice with so many delicious sounding options. We tucked into the poppadoms and the four dips - mint yoghurt, lime pickle, onion salad and Mango Chutney, whilst we made our minds up. Being partial to Indian food we stuck to our favourite usual options of Onion Bhaji and Tandoori Chicken both with fresh salad and a homemade mint sauce. Both did not disappoint- the bhaji was crunchy and flavoursome and the tandoori chicken was both generously portioned and cooked to perfection full of lovely flavour. After nearly filling up on the starter we had a small break while we enjoyed the wine we had brought with us as the premises is unlicensed. After a half time break we were served

our piping hot delicious mains. Rachel had opted for a chicken korma - although not spicy she always finds that if this is done well the hotter curries follow suit. The korma was both creamy, buttery and completely moreish. The chicken was cooked to perfection. I opted for a garlic lamb balti with extra corriander, again a tasty option with the lamb succulently cooked in a beautifully spiced balti sauce. For sides we ordered the keema pilau rice that was both

plentiful and full of taste and texture and a garlic keema nan - a leavened bread filled with spicy mince lamb and garlic, all baked in a clay oven.

This meal was extremely satisfying and the menu is both extensive and very reasonably priced. For the more adventurous curry connoisseur, the menu boasts a choice of balti, curry, biriani, sagwalla and vegetarian option with a section dedicated to chefs’ recommendations for something different. We were also impressed to note

that if there is a dish not on the menu, if possible they are happy to prepare it for you.

As well as the standard menu options there are six set menu options - a perfect option for 2-4 people, allowing all to try an array of delights from the restaurant’s various dishes. Our meal at Bengal Spice was a delight, a haven from the hustle and bustle of Telford. The already popular restaurant can only gain more prestige and custom from the nearly completed refurbishment. The good already stands up on it's own, with a regular customer base both ordering for take out and eating in. They also provide outside catering for events and can take bookings for parties and special occasions. On leaving the restaurant we were both warm, full and content, with Anwar and Ash's friendly personalities making us feel relaxed and welcome - ensuring a repeat trip in the near future!

Open Sunday-Thursday 5.30pm- 11.30pm and Friday- Saturday 5.30pm - Midnight and closed on Mondays ( except bank holidays) - we are both looking in our diaries to book our next free day in. Come and taste the delights for yourself. If you don't have time for a sit down meal then take advantage of the take away service, with free home delivery within a 3 mile radius.

Postman Pat interviews_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 15:29 Page 1

Postman Pat: The Movie opened at cinemas nationwide on Friday 23rd May

A MOMENT WITH RONAN

n a n Ro g n i t Kea w e

i v r e t In

You wouldn’t necessarily put the image of Ronan Keating, the suave Irish singersongwriter, together with that of our cheery Postman Pat. But the vocalist has lent his talent to the much loved cartoon character when he tries to hold a tune in Postman Pat: The Movie.

With years of experience performing to adoring fans, Ronan Keating has certainly developed himself a stage presence. Having filled huge arenas as part of Boyzone and as a solo artist, Ronan’s latest performance sees him as Pat’s singing voice in Postman Pat: The Movie. With the 3D animation trying his luck auditioning for TV talent show ‘You’re the One’, the pop star found himself crooning in a different sort of recording studio. “I loved it.” Ronan imparts with his characteristic soft spoken charm. “I really enjoyed the whole process. I had to match the way my voice works and my mouth moves and match the words so that was quite an interesting thing. It’s a new world for me and I really enjoyed it.”

It’s clear that Keating was taken in by the filming process, and he got on so well with the directors that they even gave him a cameo. “Originally I wasn’t even in it!” he explains. “I was just the singing voice and then the director worked on putting me in it after we met and spent some time together. So that actually changed halfway

through the whole thing, they added an extra part which is nice.”

With this his third film, the singer is becoming familiar with the acting trade. “It’s been something I’ve been trying to do for what, sixteen years and it has been a slog with a lot of rejection and that’s ok, Because, you know, I’m a singer and it’d be hard for directors to put their faith in me – being a well known singer it’s hard to then be an actor and I understand that. So finding those directors with a belief in me was a breath of fresh air.”

That's not to say the singer hasn't kept himself busy over the past sixteen years. Juggling a successful career as a solo artist and working earnestly with the breast cancer charity he founded, the Marie Keating foundation, it's surprising Ronan's found the time to champion Postman Pat's journey to the big screen from the get go. “To be honest I’m actually surprised it’s taken this long for it to be turned into a feature length film because it was such a legendary, iconic cartoon when we were kids. 30 years later to only now hit our big screens is kind of sad but exciting because my kids don’t really know Postman Pat. Hopefully the film will introduce him to them properly.” That said, getting to the studio has been a journey in itself for Keating. The per-

former is currently based in Australia where he’s a judge on the Australian version of The X Factor. “We’ve seen a lot (of talent competitions) in the UK with the last 15 years with Pop Idol, The X Factor, and you kind of feel that the talent has been exhausted. But in Australia it’s still very fresh.”

Strong words from a man with clear talent spotting skills. As despite spending his days sieving through a plethora of Australian talent, Ronan has picked himself a worthy contender with his Aussie girlfriend. What’s it like dating a girl who grew up halfway across the world? “I guess when you meet someone from another country and have a close relationship you see life differently through them. Which is incredible - the food, the drink, the society, just the way they’ve grown up and stuff they are used to which is so different from the way you’ve been brought up. It’s good to learn about that and blend.”

Postman Pat interviews_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 15:29 Page 2

Postman Pat is one of the most iconic television characters and it’s time he is given a chance to show what he can do on the big screen. You’ve got James Bond, you’ve got Jason Bourne: now it’s Pat’s turn!

Steph ” en Mang an In tervi

ew

You may know Stephen Mangan for his role as anaesthesiologist Guy Secretan in Green Wing, or perhaps as the exasperated Sean Lincoln in sitcom Episodes. Now, you’ll have to get used to him in a whole new framework, as the actor is appearing on the big screen as family favourite Postman Pat.

It’s the much loved cartoon character’s first ever feature film, and Mangan is proud to be capturing the thoroughly English postie. “Postman Pat is one of the most iconic television characters and it’s time he is given a chance to show what he can do on the big screen. You’ve got James Bond, you’ve got Jason Bourne: now it’s Pat’s turn.”

Postman Pat: The Movie sees Mangan as Pat, but Ronan Keating captures the postie’s singing voice. Wasn’t Mangan up to the crooning task himself? After all, he was in a band in the nineties… “The main problem is – my voice is actually too good.” He quips. “I mean, Pat’s supposed to have a beautiful singing voice but mine sounds otherworldly, just disturbingly beautiful….”

And whilst Ronan has spent years as a member of Boyzone, Steve prefers a rather different musical style; “I’m more of a folk artist.” He quips. “Give me an aran jumper and some wellies and a stool

and I’m away.”

He may jest about competing with the Irish singer, but Mangan didn’t actually meet the pop sensation until after his shoot – or any of the cast for that matter. Apparently, animation is more of a solo effort. “I did the entire thing on my own in a booth over two days and I actually met the women who played my wife at the premiere.” “That’s the way animation works. Quite often you do your thing in isolation, you perfect your performance, they get what they want from you. It’s a great credit to the director who really is responsible for the whole thing because he’s got all these conversations in his head, the way it’s going to look, they do the animation after you’ve recorded the voice.”

It may afford him less banter with his cast mates, but Mangan divulges that he loves working as a voiceover artist. “I think the voice is fascinating, the fact that you can pick up a phone and hear a voice, and out of all the millions of people on the planet, the thousands and thousands of voices you’ve heard, you know instantly who is talking. That’s incredible. The fact that you can get so much subtlety and nuance is remarkable. The voice is an amazing instrument and I don’t think it’s been bettered by any manmade instrument.”

Mangan isn’t new to stretching his vocal chords for a part. Primarily a stage actor – and a TONY nominated one at that – he refused film and TV roles for five years after finishing drama school, preferring to remain upon the stage. Now, twenty years on, he remains resolute that despite encroaching technology, the human aspect of performance can never be replaced. “With all the animated films we have around, and we have some great, artistic stuff that’s been done – Toy Story, Frozen - what makes them so good is the human performance. You don’t get many silent movies or cartoons anymore, because nuance needs to be provided by human beings … you’ll never get rid of actors however hard you try!”

After graduating from RADA in 1994, the actor’s career trajectory has now leapt from stage to screen to animation, and for that Mangan credits his “itchy brain”. “I get very bored easily, doing the same thing over and over again doesn’t interest me. We’ve got Episodes filming in August so I’m looking forward to series four of that. In the meantime I’ve got radio and a bit of presenting: you mix it up.”

“I’d play Pat again in a heartbeat.”

That’s said …

Ken Hom_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 14:36 Page 1

THE HYPE

KEN HOM

BRING YOU AN INTERVIEW WITH

WORDS WITH THE CHEF

As the American-Chinese chef, author, TV presenter and humanitarian that has been the face of Asian cuisine for over 30 years, Ken Hom knows what it is like to be healthy, wealthy and successful. But he also knows what it is like to be poverty-stricken and struggling to find enough money to put food on the table, which is why he is fronting a campaign for Laila rice, which aims to give away one million servings of rice to the hungry via UK foodbanks and NGOs in India and Africa.

Born in Tucson, Arizona to Taishanese parents, Ken Hom was raised by his mother who would “earn not much more than $75 a month, if that”. It

meant food had to go far, and as such the celebrity chef has first-hand experience of the pain that a lack of sustenance can cause.

“I am an ambassador for Action against Hunger - not just an ambassador for it but I give a substantial amount of money and gifts and contribution to the legacy of hunger.

It fits right into what I do. And of course, rice is an important part of my life. I love basmati rice and the fact that it can feed so many people. In today’s world it is scandalous that we even have hunger. We waste so much food - over 40% is wasted. That’s ridiculous, don’t you think? That’s another passion: so anything that can

“I do like fish and chips!”

contribute to combating those things I’m against, I am for.”

Another reason Hom is lending his support to the campaign is his disbelief at the current increase in use of food banks in the UK.

“The fact there is hunger in the UK is shocking. It has come to this for a lot of mismanagement on the government side as well as the social side. We live in world where people are worried about buying their next iPhone. We are not aware that not everybody can inspire to those kinds of things. What is important is that people can afford a good meal.” The chef is of the opinion that sustenance should be a main priority. “People talk about diets, yet some

Ken Hom_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 14:36 Page 2

people don’t have enough to eat. We have become unconscious of what is going on around us. So if this campaign can bring to attention that over one million people in the UK have been to the food bank in the last 12 months, it will be a very good thing.”

INDONESIAN FRIED RICE

FROM KEN HOM'S SIMPLE ASIAN COOKERY

Displaying a keen interest in British food and culture since 1982, when he started to front the BBC show Ken Hom's Chinese Cookery, Hom has witnessed great change in Britain’s culinary landscape both culturally and socially.

“If you take the UK as an example, being a legacy of the empire it has different cuisines. That is one of the positive aspects of colonialism from what I can see. It has made Britain in many ways a multicultural and a very interesting country. But it is the same for many western countries, like France, where I live. When many people come to a country, with it comes their food. I have seen these changes over 40 years, and it means the quality and the things that you can get are really, really amazing.” Given his expertise and extensive travel, what would he class as his favourite type of food?

“As it was my childhood cuisine, it definitely has to be Chinese food because I grew up eating it. I always end up going back to it because it is comforting and reassuring. It reminds me of being young and it makes me feel happy”.

So if Chinese cuisine will always cast Hom back down memory lane, what does he make of what England has to offer?

“It is not really to my taste, but there are some good aspects. Old fashioned things like steak and kidney pie are nice and hearty, with not much meat. But I think there is too much bread and potato, which I can’t eat too much of.”

“But…” he chuckles, “I do like fish and chips!”

At Your Wedding

After the best man speech, before the crazy DJ comes on, why not let your guests take part in a fun activity that they might never have tried before! Fill a few hours with a fun activity that most ages can take part in. A lot of weddings now have entertainment like magicians, photo booths etc but why not have something different at your wedding!! We can bring our Archery and Laser Shooting activities to your wedding, providing there’s a space big enough for us to use at the venue, indoors or outdoors. Archery is an ancient activity, it was used for combat and hunting back in the day but nowadays it’s all about having fun! Our instructor will show you how the techniques of Archery, how to properly stand, aim and fire!! You shoot at targets which we can use to keep score if you’d like a winner at the end of the day! Down to 8 year olds can usually take part.

Laser Shooting is a great wedding activity as its gives your guests a chance to have a go at a shooting activity without having bruises from powerful kick backs! We have 5 shotguns that have been modified to fire a totally harmless laser beam now rather than cartridges. The guns are still a bit heavy but there is no kick back from them. We have an outdoor system for dry days, where you shoot at clays flying through the air but we also have an indoor system for those typical wet Welsh days where its random targets that light up around a room for you to shoot at.

We play various games and there’s a scoreboard that keeps a running score for each person, so again, a winner at the end of the day if you want! There is no age restriction but children need to be able to hold the gun, but we do have stands available to help them too. Why not run a competition between the bridesmaids and best men! Family vs family, best man vs maid of honour, bride vs groom even!!! Or just simply have the activity there and guests can just pop over for a few goes if they want.

You can hire either activity for any length of time, half day, full day, just an hour. We’ll come up with a schedule to suit your day and number of guests and price it accordingly for you. We just need a decent amount of outdoor or indoor space for the activities and we’ll take care of the rest. We can contact your venue and go through it with them to make sure they are comfortable with it, and we’ll probably visit the venue beforehand.

Have a look at our website: www.adventurewales.co.uk - to see images and videos of Archery and Laser Shooting. If you’d like a price for having Archery or Laser Shooting at your wedding please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’ll ask the date, location, number of guests, time/length you want. Call us on 02920 831658

RETRO-STYLING

The comb over comeback The Comb over The comb over haircut was big in the 50's and 60's, but lost flavor as men's hair got longer. But this classic hairstyle has made a huge comeback. The comb over haircut is a trendy style for men, and it can be worn for any occasion. The slick comb over hairstyle is professional, gives the look of luxury on any man and can be worn by anyone with any face shape.

The Undercut What may very well be the trendiest hairstyle in men's hair in recent years, the undercut is the perfect summer cut for someone looking to add a little edge to their look this season. With its shaved sides and back and a long top, the undercut is easily recognizable from miles away. "What do I do with the top?" you ask. Well, that's all up to you. Many men prefer to style it with pomade and comb it over like in this picture, but you can also spike it, leave it flat, or anything else your mind can create! You'll appreciate the shaved sides and back when the summer.

Quiff Popularised in the '50s and making a radiant comeback in the past couple of years, the quiff is the perfect summer cut for guys who want something a little longer but still want that suave look. To get the perfect quiff, you normally have to start by applying styling gel after wash, then blow-dry your hair into position, and then finish with some wax to get the shape to hold. The quiff is awesome for the summertime, as it gets your hair up and out of your face and leaves you something to run your hands through.

“Visitors will find that there’s a real sense of space in the Canterbury. The open plan kitchen and dining room has French doors that lead out to the garden and the main bedroom includes an en suite and built-in wardrobes.

Get that extra quality from Bovis Homes at Telford

Buyers in Telford will find out that not all house builders consider features like integrated kitchen appliances and built-in bedroom wardrobes to be ‘extras’ if they visit a new development taking shape now in the town. In Bovis Homes properties those items are very much standard and included in the price, part of their excellent all-inclusive specification, which is available now at Oakford Grange. With a brand new show home recently opening its doors at the popular development off Sommerfeld Road, home seekers can come and have a look for themselves at the quality finish you get from the national home builder, who have been helping to create new communities across England and Wales for more than 125 years.

You can visit the four bedroom Canterbury between 10.00am and 5.00pm, Thursday to Monday, and while there talk to the sales team and find out how much more you

can get for your money with a Bovis Home.

“This lovely house type has a number of exciting features to interest prospective buyers and shows the quality of family home that will be available at Oakford Grange,” said Regional Marketing Manager Carina Wilde. “There is also so much included in the price that many other house builders would call extras, like a lovely fitted kitchen with integrated appliances like hob, cooker, dishwasher and fridge freezer.

“This showcases the high quality of homes that will be available at Oakford Grange, with prices currently starting at £99,995 for a two bedroom apartment, £156,996 for a three bedroom home and £219,995 for the four beds, although these are obviously subject to change.”

To help buyers in securing their new home at Oakford Grange, there are a variety of purchase assistance schemes available. For instance, there’s Help to Buy, which has been seen thousands of buyers get on or move up the ladder as a Government equity loan of 20% of the price means the buyer needs just a 5% deposit and 75% mortgage. Then there’s Home Exchange, where Bovis Homes could buy your old house and help take some of the stress, cost and time out of moving. For more information about Oakford Grange and all Bovis Homes purchase assistance schemes, call the sales team on 0845 260 1830 or visit www.bovishomes.co.uk.

for her very first one, but after a thorough examination he was happy with the result. Last but not least was Lily, who is 13, she was eager to see how her examination would go. Again she had a very thorough eye test and it turned out that she was a little short sighted and would also need a prescription. They happily picked out the frames that they wanted, there were lots to choose from. Jenna opted for a turquoise colour frame and Lily had seen a pair that she loved before she even went in for the test. They were measured up to get the frames to fit them properly and we had to wait a week for the glasses to arrive. We got the call to say that they had arrived and we popped in to get Jenna and Lily to try them on. They were very pleased with them and I am sure that they will make all the difference at school! I am very pleased that I took the children to get their eyes examined and was a little bit upset with myself that I hadn’t taken them sooner, especially as Jenna must have been struggling with her school work but at least she is all sorted now, I will make sure that I take them for regular check-ups from now on, just like the dentists, eye tests for under 16’s are free too! Eileen Callear

HOW IMPORTANT ARE CHILDREN’S EYE TESTS? Being a parent of 5 children, I am always running here and there, be it the doctors, dentist or school clubs etc but when my youngest daughter Jenna, who is 9 years old, recently came home from school and mentioned that she had struggled at school that day because she couldn’t see what the teacher had written on the board, it dawned on me that I had never taken any of my younger children for an eye test! I called John Biddle Opticians in Madeley, as they were the most local to me and the friendly lady on reception took our details and booked them in for eye tests. We arrived for our appointments and the kids were all quite excited and were busy trying on different frames, to see which suited them best. Jared, who is 11, was first, he sat in the chair a little nervously at first but soon settled in. He had numerous tests carried out from reading the ‘well known’ opticians chart to retina checks. He was made to feel very comfortable whilst having the tests done and it turned out that his vision was excellent. The next to take hot-seat was Jenna, who was very excited, her test took a little longer and it was clear that she was in need of a prescription for glasses. It can be quite a long process to get the exact prescription needed and the optician patiently went through the different lenses to ensure he got it absolutely perfect for her. He was a little bit hesitant, as her vision was really quite bad and the prescription she needed was strong

MADELEY 01952 586267

WELLINGTON 01952 246121

My granddaughter had her first eye test pre-school and was found to be virtually blind in one eye although her eyes looked normal. In her case it couldn`t be improved so spectacles wouldn`t help, but if she had not been taken to the Optician`s this may never have been discovered. She is now 15 years old and it has had an adverse impact on her quality of life and academic achievement. I have never heard of anyone not taking their children to the dentist regularly, even though their teeth seem fine. Is the case for eyes any different? Uncorrected, or poor vision can be a serious impediment to the development and quality of life for children. Unlike the 6 months dental checks, regular eye checks are recommended every 12 months for children even if they require no correction. It doesn`t hurt, and it`s free! So, if a child does not require visual correction why take them every year? Well, for the same health reasons they go to the dentist. Also things can change as children grow, so get them seen annually. Sometimes there is a misconception that children have eye tests at school, so it`s sort of taken care of. To my knowledge this has not been the case for many years and even when it was, it never qualified as an eye exam.

Shrewsbury 6th Form Edit_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 15:57 Page 1

Shrewsbury Sixth Form College is dedicated to ensuring that its students are involved in a broad range of educational experiences above and beyond their academic studies, in order to fully prepare them for successful progression to both higher education and employment. This year students have been provided with opportunities to work with individuals and organisations from the private and public sectors, the professions and many thriving and enterprising small businesses.

Wellmeadow Consulting recently selected Stephanie Antrobus for their first university sponsorship package following an assessment centre day with nine students testing their team working skills, mathematical abilities and performance during an interview. Stephanie will receive a £500 grant and a paid internship during holidays from university. Students interested in teaching have had the opportunity to teach and lead classes at Radbrook Primary School. They were also involved in supporting students from Meole Brace, Martin Wilson and Mount Pleasant Primary Schools in SSFC's annual primary school day where Year 5 pupils participated in a range of activities across the curriculum spectrum from Sciences to Product Design, ICT to Psychology and Food Technology and PE. Physics, Electronics and Product Design students

have been working with local firms GKN Land Systems, Ingimex and GKN Aluminium Structures through the Engineering Education Scheme, innovating and seeking solutions to real life engineering problems. Additionally six students, having deferred their university entry for a years paid employment, thereby receiving an invaluable insight to their chosen careers before university, have participated in the 'The Year in Industry' scheme.

Martin Ward, Principal, commented: “As a college in the heart of Shrewsbury, we believe it is vitally important for us to contribute to, and enhance, the life of the local community. This philosophy has been put into practice in a huge variety of ways, and our students have had many opportunities to gain valuable real work and life experiences. “The majority of our students go onto higher education, but the current economic climate means that employability skills are essential whatever route to employment might be taken.’ ‘This is also why we are continually examining our curriculum offer’ adds Paul Morgan, Assistant Principal Curriculum ‘there is something in the news almost

daily about changes in subjects and what is being studied at all levels and as a college we need to respond both to what universities and employers look for in potential students and employees'. 'We're expanding our BTEC offer, redesigning the programme for students who need to resit their Maths and/or English Language GCSE'. The expansion this year of the college onto two campuses named English Bridge Campus and Welsh Bridge Campus has been well received the students, teachers and town centre businesses alike. Subject areas have been able to grow both in student number and facilities; business owners have commented on the increased vitality and footfall around the whole town that has resulted from students moving between the campuses.

We are already looking forward to another successful pre-enrolment course, A Level results day, and then enrolling and supporting an increasing number of new students at the end of August. Many students continue to come from across Shropshire and surrounding areas, because of our extensive range of courses, enrichment activities, and specialist post-16 advisory services. Our travel scheme in association with Arriva trains and buses is an additional bonus for those attending the College and one that we’re delighted to be able to be involved with. We are pleased also that Shropshire Council has responded so positively to the feelings of students and parents alike about the changes in the councils transport provision.”

Kumon DPS_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 18:15 Page 1

Get the new school year off to a smart start with Kumon As the summer holidays roll on, attention will soon inevitably turn towards the start of the new school year.

Whereas thoughts may be focused on ensuring children have a new, crisp, school uniform and a restocked pencil case, it is just as important to ensure your child is equipped with the most vital tools needed for a successful year ahead; a good grip on the core subjects of maths and English and the learning skills required for academic progression.

At your local Randlay Study Centre, Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes tailored to all ages and abilities. Established for over 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills

and confidently tackle advanced work. Having long breaks from study means children can sometimes require extra support to get back into the routine of daily study. Kumon can help your child to start their new school year motivated and confidence, and ensure they gain maximum benefit from the year of learning ahead. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Through daily study of the Kumon programmes, your child will develop the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. Kumon Educational is the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, with over 68,000 students studying at more than 640 study centres.

The Kumon Randlay Study Centre is located at Randlay Community Centre, Randlay Centre TF3 2LH, with classes running on Saturdays – 10 am –noon, and Tuesdays 4.15-6pm throughout the year.

The new school year is an ideal time to enrol your child at your local Kumon centre, to ensure they gain maximum benefit from the year of learning ahead.
