fashion DIY

the distressed denim look We’ve all got those old pair of jeans that we’re too embarrassed to wear shoved in the back of our closet. Well, it’s time to dig them out and create a cute pair of denim shorts - that will complete your Spring/Summer staple look.

We show you how to turn a fashion faux pas into a fashion voilà…

Re-worked clothing is really in style this season- so take advantage of it. Customising your old, worn-out clothes is a great way to keep up with the trends, save money and make a state ment - what more could you want?

Make it: 1. Try on your old jeans and decide how short you want them , and make a little mark so you don’t forget! Remember to leave around an inch of extra length for fraying.

The crop knot tee

Raw cut tee’s are everywhere this season and there is nothing more DIY-able than a simple cut and tie top. The crop top is also back in fashion this S/S so we’ve combined the two trends to create an ultra-stylish ensemble that will save you a fortune!

2. Starting from the outside in - cut both of the legs off (this is the scary part!) at a slight angle. 3. Start distressing the shorts with scissors by dragging the blade along the leg-hole – this will add a nice frayed effect.

You will need: A plain top (Any style or colour you want!) and scissors.

Make it: 1.Start by cutting both sides of the shirt to your desired length 2.Flip the top over, fold the material upwards and cut it off, then give the ends a good stretch to achieve a worn-in look 3.Turn the shirt back over to its front and cut both corners off (it’s okay if they’re not perfect – but try to make them equal), then you should be left with a triangle shape 4.Cut through the middle of the triangle until it meets the length of the back – and once again, stretch the edges out 5.Finally, take the two ends and tie into a double knot – and there you have it, a cute crop knot tee!

On a budget and can’t find anything to wear? We’ve all been there, although it may seem like you’re having a fashion disaster - you don’t have to be rich to look hip. Whether you’re a student, or working part-time there are many ways that you can vamp up your wardrobe without having to break the bank - or your parents!

You will need: an old pair of jeans, ~scissors and sand-paper.

4. Make a couple of slice cuts with scissors near the base of the pockets to look like worn holes. 5. Rub sand-paper over the denim in all of the places you want a little extra wear – we did it on the waist band, pockets and flies. 6. For the perfect finish wash and dry your new shorts in the machine – and voilá, you’ve got yourself a perfect pair of shorts for pennies!

Summer’s nearly here, and you know what that means – sun, sand and music festivals! So why not complete your festival threads with a DIY floral crown – a perfect addition to that Boho beach look you’ll be donning at all summer long. Teamed with a cute fishtail braid, or even soft, romantic waves, your locks will be the talk of the town! After all let’s face it – flower crowns are pretty, versatile and not to mention fun to make. You will need: Fake flowers, 3 long pieces of suede lace, a marker pen, scissors and super glue. Make it: 1.Start by measuring the lace around your head and cut off any excess for the perfect fit. 2.Tie the three bits of lace

into a knot and one end and begin braiding – just like you would your locks! When you’re done tie it at the end . 3.Cut the stems off of your flowers – we chose pink and white flowers but you can choose any colour you like! 4.Decide where you would like

the flowers to sit on the headband and make a little mark. 5.Once you’re happy with the

position of your flowers, stick them on using super glue – and you now have a unique floral crown, how easy was that!

breaking Bands In desperate need of a playlist update? We’ve uncovered three bands that are taking over the festival scene this summer – and are set to become the bands to beat in 2014…

HAIM Nu-folk meets 90’s R&B with The Powerpuff Girls of the American rock scene

BASTILLE The lowdown: The indie-rock four piece are named after Bastille Day (a celebration of French culture - which falls on frontman Dan’s birthday) and influenced by the likes of Bat for Lashes, Regina Spektor and The Fugees. Born in London the band began as a solo project by singer-songwriter Dan Smith, which quickly escalated into a four-man experimental band consisting of lead vocalist Dan Smith, William Farquarson, Chris Wood and Kyle Simmons. They’ve been on the music scene for a while – but in just over a year Bastille have become increasingly popular with their release of several EP’s and mix-tapes (containing some awesome covers of 90s club classics!) - And their number one charting album ‘Bad Blood.’ The sound: A mix between Arcade Fire’s classically influenced melodies and The Killers panoramic, borderline-cinematic tunes. Their experimental rhythmic melodies consist of percussions and keyboards, coupled with Dan Smith’s emotive vocals and enchanting lyrics – creating an atmospheric soundscape that no other indie band can beat. The tracks to download: Pompeii, Of The Night and Oblivion.

British indie band with an abundance of feelings, synth and falsetto injections

The lowdown: A trio of LA born sisters made up of lead vocalist Danielle Haim, Este Haim, Alan Haim and one mister – Dash Hutton on the drums have created a genre clash fusing R&B and folk for a unique twist on modern rock music (talk about girl power!) Influenced by the likes of 90’s girl groups TLC and Destiny’s Child Haim are also comparable to ‘70s soft-rock legends Fleetwood Mac (not a bad comparison to say the least!) With the recent release of their three song EP titled ‘Forever’ and their debut album ‘Days Are Gone’, these girls on a mission have a full summer of festival gigs lined up – including Coachella (jel!) The sound: Irresistible folk-rock tunes with a hint of R&B/hip-hop vocals thrown into to the mix. With a serious amount of hooks and percussion – it’s impossible not to sing along to Haim’s undeniably unique tracks. The tracks to download: Falling, Don’t Save Me and Send Me Down.

Three-piece electro-pop band that will dominate your summer soundtrack The lowdown: This electronic trio are becoming increasingly more popular after getting an insane amount of online buzz. Born in Scotland – CHVRCHES consists of lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Doherty, together they combine their synthesizing skills and vocals to create super-fun pop beats which has hit the music scene by storm. Influenced by the likes of Prince, Robyn and the Cocteau Twins – they’re reinventing dance tracks for the modern era (not bad, considering they came out of no-where!) With the release of their EP ‘Recover’ and debut album ‘The Bones of What You Believe – CHVRCHES have been named one of Britain’s most promising new music talents. The sound: Warm electro-pop beats combining 80’s style synths with Lauren Mayberry’s high-pitched organic vocals. With touching lyrics and The XX style scientific backing tracks – this boy/ boy/girl electro-trio are sure to get your feet tapping at a festival.
